Sylvari look more human than the mordrem because the Pale Tree used Ventari (and humans in general) as a mold to create them.

sylvari don't look like mordrem

Tom Gore.4035

I want to understand why some of them are not under his control after all of this.

It seems the further you go from the source of the corruption, the less it has hold over you. The Pale Tree was grown far away from Mordremoth and as such, was free of his corruption. Also, there is a strong hint that Ventari’s teachings had a great part to play in nurturing the Sylvari out of their possibly murderous nature.

It’s also believed that the Dream protects the Sylvari of the Pale Tree from Mordremoth’s corruption. It could be it is not a solid shield but rather a curtain, that can be pushed aside with a force strong enough (such as the close proximity of Mordremoth).

WHy would he be looking for something he already has? Rytlock has Sohothin… And if he didnt have it (which he did) you can see him with the sword in the trailer…

He tried to use the sword in a ritual to cleanse the foefire and the ghosts of Ascalon, but something went wrong and a portal to the Mists opened. The sword fell in and Rytlock jumped after it to get it back.

So for some time at least Rytlock definitely did not have the sword in his possession. Apparently he will find it, because we can see him wielding it in the HoT trailer.

By the way, as to the question why the Sylvari do not look like other dragon minions or like Mordrem. Could it be that it’s because they grew from the Pale Tree and she grew them into another image than what Mordy himself does.

From the wiki:

“Many scholars hypothesize as to why the sylvari look human-like at all instead of having a monstrous form, such as other “vegetable” races possess. Some suggest that the Pale Tree saw mostly humans during her youth. Individuals such as Ronan, who planted the seed, and others around the Pale Tree may have been physical role models for her eventual children. A popular asura theory is that the Pale Tree was planted on the graves of Ronan’s daughter and his ruined village, and their ”discorporate mass” was absorbed into the ground. The Pale Tree took nourishment from that soil, and therefore, the sylvari are predisposed to be shaped in a humanoid manner.”

Again, just a theory, but it could explain why the Sylvari of the Pale Tree look so different from the Mordrem.

“Sylvari and the Pale Tree don’t even look like Mordrem. Yet they were intended to be dragon minions from the beginning? If this was so, wouldn’t Mordrem have looked like sylvari? Wouldn’t the Pale Tree look like a Mordrem tree? Remember: the one and only means of removing corruption does not change the physical appearance – it just gives free will.”

Considering that, these are are old GW2 concept art pieces by Kekai Kotaki:

Caithe (a sylvary) before the redesign:

Mordrem/Corrupted guys (obviously servants of Mordremoth). They look like the old version of Sylvary and you can’t say they’re just corrupted because I can’t find any other race corrupted in the same way in concept art.

Another one.

Then this one , which shows an obvious Mordrem with a Mord-sylvary that’s even listed in the wiki as Sylvary concept art.

I can’t look at these and not believe it was their plan from the beginning.

Yeah. Odds are they changed the Sylvari to be more “beautiful”, because ugly/monstrous races are generally not favored by players.

I hope that isn’t something the writers are proud of.

I don’t even really know what to say. Just wow. Lame.

Considering the game has hundreds of thousands of players, it would be practically impossible to have a secret in the game that there are hints for, and still keep it a secret so that no one would guess it.

Yeah I don’t have a strong opinion for the NPE. I think as a genuinely new player it is probably alright, and I also think most of the hate comes from the veterans who need to go through additional hoops when powerleveling alts.

Personally, I would change the trait unlocking to be account-wide, especially because unlocking the traits requires the same stuff for each race/profession anyway.

But after you do, the gaps will be bigger, as the story missions only appear every 10 levels. You’ll also notice that you won’t have your traits unlocked as you level, instead having to either buy them open with gold or accomplish the associated event to unlock it.

I would save your praise until you’ve gone a few more levels through the NPE. The majority seems to hate it.

How much for heavy ascended armor ?

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: Tom Gore.4035

Tom Gore.4035

If you are starting to craft without any crafting skills and have never done ascended before I’d expect about a 650 gold cost. Maybe as little as 550 if you are lucky, 750 if something gets lost along the way.

Stage 1: is making sure you get your crafting skill up. That’s pretty cheap to do. About 70 gold to 400 skill. If you go out and get the metals you need and dungeon you should almost have that on your own. So Stage 1 is free to 70 gold.

Stage 2: crafting from 400 skill to 500 skill . … That’s expensive. I’d expect another 70 gold lost right there. It’s going to happen.

Stage 3: this is a weird part. You’re going to want a lot of damask. Where you get it is and how is somewhat luck (good or bad). I know for awhile I was able to craft the damask using dungeon loot I’d saved up for a couple years. Even then I still ended up spending about 400 gold in costs for the damask.

You can off set the costs if you mine frequently. Iron and Platinum sell pretty well. Mithril does as well. Don’t bother farming Orichalcum. It’s a giant waste of time to farm Orr. Just buy it. This is largely true of crafting a lot of the other materials. GW 2 is not like other MMOs. Farming is not a viable option unless your account was one of the ones granted permission to have drops.
If you don’t understand what I mean about drop permissions look up a lot of the discussions about Mystic Forge precursor drop rates. Some accounts are exceedingly lucky about this and others are not. The belief is that the game prioritizes accounts in a fixed way within the random number generator. For instance, my friend can practically sneeze junk into the MF and get Pres. Everyone else in our guild, myself included, has no such luck. That’s out of about 30 people. We even sat down and tried to work this out by giving one person a load of money to test the MF against the person who seems to always be so lucky. By all evidence, it’s an account thing. So, if you are looking for ultra rare materials or whatever and never find them, just admit defeat now and get on the gold grind.

Yeah if you’re in a hurry, by all means blow hundreds of gold to level a crafting skill you’ll probably use a few times before you realize everything except maybe the chestpiece are not worth it.

Or you can follow my advice above, take your time, and earn some gold while leveling the craft.

Your choice.

[Spoilers] Where do RPers stand in this?

in Living World

Posted by: Tom Gore.4035

Tom Gore.4035

While I haven’t finished the LS yet, nor expect to any time soon, I watched friends completing it.

Here’s what I’ve gotten out of the experience:
- Anet isn’t exactly a creative bunch. If it can be solved poorly and inadequately then that will be the path taken.
- What I take from the above reality is that we’ll be dealing with the Sylvari issues as an instanced situation:
- i.e. Canach is going to get cornered somewhere and we’ll have to go help him out.
-Canach means Anise somehow.
- Rytlock is back by whatever time this all unfolds, so either he will magically birth himself out of the ground or the like is probable given how Anet is.
- If anything doesn’t make sense don’t talk about it and let the players make up reasons.
- We saw Eir completely unconcerned with the airship crashing, at one point falling toward sharp spikey stuff, the airship behind her, then a few seconds later standing on the airship shooting away with her bow. We can take from this that Eir has learned to teleport and is completely protected by ascended plot armor. Logain and Zojja are similarly in this way. First we see Logain and Zojja falling into open air, then we see them hanging from the bow of the ship.
- We can be fairly certain the next Anet-plothole… I mean patch… will be about rescuing people from the non-sense.
- We can also ask the question, if the vines can shoot that fast out of the earth, that large, what chance anyone has once they actually touch the earth. Unless they can crawl into a bag of holding for a week the plot has gotten pretty absurd.
- Nevertheless, we should expect to be on a rescue and preservation path for the next little while.
- Anything that happens will take place in instanced situations as evidence by the complete lack of signs of devastation in the base camp at the Silverwastes.
- Oh, but good news. Trehearne may finally be dead. We didn’t see him in any of the cutscenes post falling from the ship. More likely though, Trehearne is going to be the bait and hook for towing us back out into the wider plot arch following this rescue and preserve story arch.
- Sylvari characters are unaffected for “reasons”. Anet hasn’t decided that yet. We should all know by now Anet doesn’t think ahead or behind. This is a schizophrenic entity. It invents continuity in the course of the immediate delusion.

What if you take that cutscene as a recollection of the events, told by one of the survivors? I mean, it’s not like your character was there when it happened, so it’s all hearsay to him/her.

  2. A new profession.
  3. A new race.
  4. A new weapon for each profession.
  5. New utilities and/or weapon skills.
  6. New stuff to do in WvW, maybe even the promised unique borderlands.

For #4, if you allowed class swapping it would just end up in a class swapping war until time runs out. Let’s start the PvP only after the game starts, ok?

As someone in another thread suggested, don’t show the enemy team until the final 10s countdown – this way the only reason to class swap is to counter class stacking in your own team.

That would solve this problem, but would introduce another problem that the team would not have a chance to plan their strategy according to the enemy team composition. This could be alleviated by allowing class swapping for the first 30 seconds, then locking it and showing the enemy team.

It may simply be a renaming of the game, much like other games do when they release substantial updates (IE, RIFT: Nightmare Tide/Storm Legion, AION: Ascension/Steel Cavalry, etc)

A substantial update is pretty much what an expansion is, by definition.

Have the naysayers really reached a point where they are now arguing semantics? “Yeah we’re getting five new zones, new race, new class and new skills for each profession, but it’s just an update. It’s not an expansion!”

I consider an “expansion” something paid for to access extra parts of the game on top of the base game(akin to GW1 expansions/WoW expansions), but an update something part of the base game, that will change the game as a whole potentially for free/an optional cost

Ok. You can do that. But that doesn’t make it a universal definition.

currently 100gems is around 14-17 gold (depending on the hour) i can hardly believe making 100 gems be around 30 gold a win for everyone.

Again, im well aware of the conviniences that having such item in the gem store can be, but it wont be without a massive influence on gold->gem conversion rates which will never go back to “normal”, and can only go higher

Would be a win for those who don’t want to farm gold, but just buy some gems and swap them for gold. I would love to get ~200-250 gold for ten bucks.

An expansion would not be called a new framework.

It would if it was distributed and/or launched in an unconventional way, such as being purchased with Gems (or Gold-to-Gems if you prefer) or even released free of charge and monetized through other Gem paid unlocks, such as new class/race (and the character slot unlocks they undoubtedly generate).

Sure it could be just an iPad card game like Hearthstone, but by reserving 90 minutes on the main stage for just that would cause a kittenstorm of epic proportions. Hopefully Anet is smarter than that.
