Guild Halls, what's the point?

Tom Gore.4035

Not really interested in Guild Halls personally. We already have many places that we can go for all sorts of vendors and all crafting stations, some for free (Heart of the Mists) and others for a few silver.
I also don’t see the point of meeting in the same place and communicating in a same place. You can communicate via chat from anywhere, no need to be next to someone.

But I see many don’t share my point of view that Guild Halls are pointless. Possibly cause I don’t have a serious guild that I am into. I jump between several depending on my needs, one PvP guild, one for dungeons with people who know their stuff, my personal guild and a 4th one for the lulz, a place I can use to troll randoms cause they invite anyone

So you’re practically a loner and think anything that doesn’t offer anything to loners is pointless? Ok.

I also hope they will have as little RNG in getting the collections as possible. I’m looking at you, organ parts and coat boxes.

So now it’s case of either/or? You don’t need more GvG options, you need one solid.

Well that’s what I read from your post. Maybe I misunderstood. In game development it unfortunately is either/or, because the team’s resources are limited.

Both WvW and GvG have received updates in the past. WvW gets more updates because it has a player base far bigger than the GvG scene has. PvE gets even more updates because of the same reason.

Both GvG and WvW are also getting updates in the expansion, although it’s safe to say they pale again compared to what PvE will get.

That’s just how the wheel turns. More players playing a game mode means more money spent in relative gemstore purchases which means even more money to use to improve that particular game mode. I’m pretty sure Anet tracks the time usage of each of their players and can see demographics of how much an average person spends in each of the game modes.

I would also wager sPvP is by far the least played game mode measured in both absolute player numbers and time spent there on average. I would also wager the ratio of gems purchased versus time spent is the worst (Anet’s PoV) within the sPvP crowd. It only receives attention because the content there is quick to create and Anet wants it to be an Esport.

When I want to go solo roaming, I pick a thief. Why? Because it has by far the most potential to get in, kill someone quickly and get out before the zerg runs you over. Low risk vs. high reward. That’s thief gameplay for you.

When I go roaming in a small group I… Ok who am I kidding. We still pick thieves because of the funnies of instagibbing anything and disappearing before they even realize one of them died.

I remember asheron’s call had such an issue with players grouping up in the main trade “hub” town that it was crashing the servers. Thier solution to the problem was to blow up the city in the shadow invasion patch. The REAL funny thing was that they literally turned the town into a giant burnt out crater. What they FORGOT to do was adjust the Z axis cords for the players that had logged off in town before the patch so for about 8 hours afterwards I had a blast just sitting on the rim of the crater watching people falling out of the sky to their death. One of the most hilarious moments in gaming I’ve ever had.

Video?

AC was mainly played in the pre-video capturing era. Capturing video back then required super-powerful equipment or an external device.

I don’t really see a massive crash, but could be it’s only the beginning of the end.

Ikr. From the wiki (and there’s source):
“Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns expansion will bring a collection-based precursor scavenger hunt. Players will be able to acquire one precursor per collection per account, these collections will be unlocked by spending mastery points.”

The thing is, we have no idea how much work these collections are. By all we know, some of the current precursors could be faster to acquire by grinding gold and buying them off the TP.

This tells exactly how much “green” people give stuff any thought. So let me put this into perspective.

Your lighting, if you still use old-fashioned light bulbs (which you shouldn’t), will use 40-120W per room you have lit. If you’re sitting at your computer you could safely turn off some of the lights and go with just one bulb for 40W consumption. If you’re a bit more energy-conscious and are using fluorescent or LED bulbs the consumption drops to less than 10W.

Now then let’s go to your computer. You’re probably playing the game on a gaming desktop and playing GW2 it will be running almost at full throttle most of the time. If you have a midrange PC it will probably then be drawing somewhere between 300-400W from the wall. Add on top your monitors, which add another 30-50W depending on your setup (I’m giving you the benefit of the doubt that you’re not using a CRT monitor anymore).

The end result is, if you turn off your computer for that hour, you can burn all 20 LED bulbs in your hourse and still be spending less than half of the power you would be using with all your lights off and your computer on.

Want to be green? Turn off your PC for an hour.

Tom, I’m one of the players who had high hopes for GW 2 coming from Warhammer Online. WAR community was all about RvR (realm vs. realm), and still some of the most competitive gw WvW guilds were the ones joining the game from WAR (RG, VII). So question stands why most of them left? Or at least why most of the players have left? Well for me – there is nothing competitive about current WvW. And if players take their own steps creating GvG scene, that should raise some attention from devs.
There is something unique about potential of GvG, which could make this game one of the kind in the sea of PvE based MMOs.

So instead of fixing WvW to be competitive you’d rather have the devs create more GvG options so that WvW could be forgotten even more? I don’t really see the benefit of that.

There is one very simple thing Anet can do and this will fix many of the problems. No WvW before lvl 80, this will fix both PvE and WvW.
But as we all know Anet are pretty narrow-minded, greedy and have the gift not to see the problems that are right under nose noses.

That could indeed solve a lot of the problems that plague EotM and move that population back to the PvE maps. Don’t know if it would have any meaningful impact on WvW, but then again it’s not as inherently broken as EotM is.

Anyhow, I’m still anxious to hear what their solution on making objectives more lucrative to hold is.

Well Anet did say they want to make defending and holding objectives more important. I hope that they will at the same time consider how to fix the “coverage wars”, which there are several suggested fixes, most of them being detrimental to the importance of “night crews”, which might kitten off many people, but I don’t think it was Anet’s original intention that servers could only compete if they hired a lot of people from outside their own region’s timezone.

And Kulaz, the name “Guild Wars” does not derive from GvG. It’s part of the history of Tyria. In any case, there will be GvG sPvP in the expansion, with leaderboards and all. On top of that you can still GvG in larger numbers at the OS arena or wherever.

No they’re not there. You cannot ever play the quests and content on the original zones. They’re gone for good. No matter how much you pay for them, it’s gone and Blizzard isn’t going to open an “oldies goldies” server where the cataclysm never happened.

That is a “real life” issue there. The kind of things you would expect to be out of a game sincerely. Leaving players OUTSIDE your game`s story is not wise in anyway, charging them for that when you are not a sub-based and on top of that a B2P which market strategy was “pay once, play all you want” isn`t wise neither. kitten , even sub-based games you can just pay your sub after 4 years of innactivity and do 8 years old quests if you missed one, this is just lol.

I knew that after 2 years the only players would be remaining on this forums would be die hard white knight, but this is amazing LOL.

No one sees nothing wrong with this, like… for real? Guess Anet could also try charging gems for entering dungeons and on one will say a thing…

Anet is a business. They need to make money. Customers like you, who buy the box and never want to open their wallets after that for any reason are not the likes they design their business around because that would be suicide for the company.

They’re not asking you to blow 15 bucks a month whether you play a hour or 100 hours. They’re not forcing you to pay to unlock the LS episodes either. You can either log in when they’re up, or pay if you like. If you’re only interested in the story you can find someone who has them unlocked and join them in a party to play them.

I sincerely don’t know how they could be any more fair with it, and still expect to make some money with the game, to be able to make those LS episodes in the future, too. Can you propose me a business model that is more fair, yet would still give them the necessary income to keep developing the game?

They’ve also said they would like to release LS1 in purchasable/unlockable episodes some time in the future, but are not sure how to do it yet. Needless to say, it would require quite a bit of reworking the releases to convert them into playable single-player episodes and still not miss most of the related story.

To me it looks like you’re expecting the company to give everything for free, forever. Again, please let me know how do you think that would work business-wise?

A tip: The game accepts accented characters in character names, as well as multi-part names. So instead of “Eddard Stark” you could have any of these:

Eddárd Stark
Éddard Stark
Eddärd Stark
Èddard Stark

Or combine any of the accents in the name, for hundreds of combinations.

OR you could go wild and invent an actually original name for your character, instead of copying famous IPs.

Another feature patch before HoT?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Tom Gore.4035

Tom Gore.4035

I never said it would have to release features of the expansion before release. I was talking about balancing adjustments in preparation for the release later. We have at least one specialization for each class and a brand new class coming in, so the idea of gradually easing the game into a new class balance rather than completely changing current class balance all at once is what I was talking about.

That could happen, yes. But it would still be pretty dumb to “balance” stuff in anticipation of something that is not in the game yet.

My guess is they will do big beta testing before the launch, probably on a (public) test server. Nevertheless, even a public beta test would not be enough to weed out all balance kinks so the balancing will inevitably continue after the launch, too.

New Race

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: Tom Gore.4035

Tom Gore.4035

They’ve said that they have revealed every major feature in HoT, so yeah it’s pretty safe to say we’re not getting a new race. Maybe next expansion now that they have “balanced” the armor categories of classes to 3-3-3.

Keep in mind even WoW alternated between race/class releases. First they released a new race for each faction (blood elves and draenei), then a new class (death knight), then a new race again (goblins and worgen). In Mists of Pandaria they broke the chain by introducing a new race (Pandaren) and a new class (Monk), but they “cheated” by not creating a new race for each faction, but instead making Pandaren available for both.

Warlords of Draenor, which was just released, also broke the chain by introducing no new races or classes.

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Tom Gore.4035

Tom Gore.4035

I personally feel like a feature patch may be a good thing to help prepare the existing game for the upcoming changes presented by the expansion. When people are able to test out the expansion, I’m sure they’ll find various ways in which the current game and HoT need to be balanced before its release. With this in mind, I assume we will see another feature patch or at least a good number of smaller patches between now and the release of HoT.

Edit: This is also under my personal assumption that HoT will be released in the second half of the year which gives plenty of time for balance patches.

It would not make sense to release features of a paid expansion gradually and ahead of time.

We don’t know, but it looks like we’re only getting to the Heart of Maguuma in the expansion, at least when it begins.

Now this is something to consider: It would be bad design to let players kill Mordremoth right with the first patch when the expansion launches. Therefore I predict the expansion will only be the beginning of Season 3 of the living story, and that season will later culminate in killing Mordremoth, some time in the 2016.

Let’s hope we can tackle the next dragons faster or we will never have them all dead before the game.

Keep in mind those earnings also include new game purchase and gemstore purchases, of which they have 25-30 million worth every quarter and they probably expect to get even more of those with the launch of the expansion. You’ll also have to consider the PvP balancing nightmare that comes with just one specialization/weapon per existing profession AND a whole new profession. The amount of work to ensure everything stays in (relative) balance is HUGE. And it grows exponentially every time you add something more.

I really don’t envy the task of those responsible for balance for the classes and all the new toys they’ll get in the x-pac.

They’ll have to do something, either introduced WvW improvements gradually or 1 new pvp map and some new skins to farm for, perhaps hardcore mode for dungeons, or something that could make the PvE harder and more rewarding.

The expansion will be paid and distributed in boxed and gemstore. That pretty much rules out any gradual release of the content within.

Now stuff not included in the expansion is another thing. I also hope we’ll get something substantial before the x-pac.

Doing a simple arithmetic rule:

8 classes —-————- $50
1 class —-—————— X

X=6.25, if they want to round it up, ok, lest go to $10.

Even if we can take other things into consideration (like pve maps, guild halls, legendaries, the new WvW map, the new PvP map, and mode, the specializations, the masteries…) all of that compared to what Gw2 bringed for $50, reassure that the price should be veeeeery much low (cause the content is veeeeery much low).

So over $10 i will consider it an scam.
Other thing is that we’ll buy it as a caprice or fancy stuff, even if it is overpriced. But just to let you know: even if it is and it is called an “expansion”, it is not too much content and it shouldnt be prized like that.

How would it be a scam if they tell you what’s inside and what the price is. It’s only a scam if they would say it contains 3 zones and it would only contain 1.

Products are not priced based on what they contain. They’re priced on the guesstimate of what the customer is willing to pay for it.

Do you really think 16GB of flash memory costs 100 USD?

Plus it makes the game seem really cheap if they release expansions etc for free.

We want something quality don’t we?

Also come on. $60 is Fook all. You’d probably spend that on fast food or some crap anyway.

It’s already confirmed in the FAQ that it will be paid, and will be distributed both via gemstore and boxed in retail stores.
