By the way. PC Gamer just published an interview with Colin and Mike and they talk about the new WvW borderland, too.

http://www.pcgamer.com/guild-wars-2-heart-of-thorns-interview/#page-2

I was “ranting” a bit earlier about the objectives in the current WvW maps being located at absolutely useless locations, and that they should be placed in chokepoints and locations that allow you to guard other objectives.

Well look what they’re doing. Exactly what I asked for

“Towers are located at chokepoints in the new borderland map, and have walls around them that guard those chokepoints, so holding a tower actually helps you control movement in the map.”

This is what I’ve been hoping for. I guess I should have already guessed they’re going for this direction by the way EotM is designed, having objectives inside the outer keep walls.

I think it’s safe to say a rework to the PPT system is coming anyway, as Anet said they wanted to emphasize the importance of holding objectives over just capping and losing them. Can’t see that happening without some changes to the PPT system.

but eventually we will face the same problem and this time it will be even worse if there are 4 borderlands instead of 3.

Solutions are there, of course. Merging servers is one, reducing the pop cap of the maps is another.

It’s not an additional borderland, it’s replacing the original 3 borderlands every week or two as a rotation.

Ah! I didn’t even think about that. Yes, that could be it. So it would not replace one borderland, it would replace all three.

Ok then the next question is if it will be “balanced” like EB or will it have a clear “home” faction with an inherent advantage.

If it is balanced, will we have 3 instances of it (would be boring) or just one, which would lead into having a long queue to both it and EB.

If it favors one faction, then there will of course be 3 instances of it like the original BLs.

Darn. Now I’m looking forward to them explaining this to us even more.

And yeah if it replaces all three it has to be free for all, expansion or not.

You seriously think there will be a big relative difference between servers in the ratio of “bought/non-bought”?

In addition, if all the players of one server are on that map, what prevents you from capping all their stuff on the other maps?

If only one server has the map unlocked then 1-3 people can cap the map with no effort. Leaving the main zerg and others on the other maps. Can you not imagine the PPT loss you’d have by only being able to cap EB?

We can’t assume that everyone will pick up the expansion pack, leaving half of a game mode locked to those who don’t buy it is an impossibility.

Are you seriously saying that the other server doesn’t have even 1-3 players who have the expansion bought? If that would be the case I think the state of WvW would be our least problem.

The fact is when the expansion launches there will be a queue on all servers (at least for T5 and up) to the new map. How long, depends on how interesting the map is and how important it is in relation to the other borderlands and EB.

OK a question, will we have to buy the expansion to play on the new WvW map???

You have alienated too many players over the last 2 years, if so then less players will come back to the game…

We don’t know, but I think it is safe to assume you need the expansion to be able to enter the new WvW map. After all, Anet will want to dip into the WvW players’ pockets, too.

Lol this will ruin any balance there currently is… imagine a WvW map that you can’t even defend because there are more people who bought the expansion on another server… totally OP.

You seriously think there will be a big relative difference between servers in the ratio of “bought/non-bought”?

No, that was a joke. :P

What I do think though: existing population differences will result in extra problems for getting enough people on all maps with a new map added. In some servers it’s barely possible to man all different maps at the same time (in FoW I have literally been alone on maps, not during prime but still at regular EU times).

On that I do agree. WvW pop is spread out too thin as it is. Undoubtedly that will be fixed for a short while after the expansion launches with the surge of new and returning players, but eventually we will face the same problem and this time it will be even worse if there are 4 borderlands instead of 3.

Solutions are there, of course. Merging servers is one, reducing the pop cap of the maps is another.

I took the 6s as an example. Could use any one number instead and my point would still remain.

The point is, in a large sample size, streaks happen, and they happen a lot more frequently than people generally think they do.

That was the purpose of my exercise I posted, about listing a “random” sequence of 1s and 0s and comparing it to one generated by a random number generator. This is a classic exercise by math teachers to show how people misinterpret randomness.

In most cases, people make their own “random” sequences with very little or no streaks of 5 or 6, which are almost guaranteed to happen in a truly random sequence of say, 100 numbers.

In a large sample size, streaks do happen but infrequently if your measure is one streak in a few thousand numbers. If it happens say once in every 100 numbers, wouldnt you say the RNG is not truly random?

I’m talking about a streak of 5 or 6 1’s or 0’s, in a sequence of 100 random 1’s or 0’s. That does happen frequently, almost every time. And it’s because the RNG generating those 1s and 0s is truly random. If you don’t believe me I don’t know what I can say to convince you. Maybe you should take a few courses in statistics?

Exactly what happened to OP. As you can see he was hit by shield bash just before the evis. You can do that in sPvP too. You either avoid the shield bash or you better hope you’ve got your stunbreaker ready. In a ranger’s case, that would be LR, which the OP hadn’t even slotted (lol).

No, but it would have for example a streak of 5 6s quite frequently, and a streak of 10 6s would still not be a super rare anomaly either.

The fact that we have people that have had absolutely no drops during their 1000 hours of playing, and people who have had 10 drops during the same time tells us that Anets algorithm is truly random and that they do not use any streak-breaking algorithms (but maybe they should).

If a streak of 5 6s occur frequently, wouldnt you say the algorithm is faulty? The question is what is the threshold though.

We were talking about MMOs, so “frequently” could be as few as one in a thousand and it would still stick out like a sore thumb, like this thread is.

Well it is a good question to ask statisticians: If streaks of 5 6s are frequent, whereas 1,2,3,4,5 do not have or have infrequent streaks in an equal distribution in a large sample size, would the RNG or dice roll be considered truly random?

I took the 6s as an example. Could use any one number instead and my point would still remain.

But since it seems you don’t understand randomness or standard distribution, let’s try to reason with you, then.

Could you tell me, from a business perspective, why would Anet EVER want to assign some accounts with extremely bad luck and some accounts with extremely good luck? Tell me ONE way that would make any sense.

Because that would be a surefire way to lose BOTH players. One would quit because he already got everything in the game quickly and has nothing to look forward to. Other would quit because he didn’t get anything and felt betrayed.

If anything, PREVENTING that from happening would be the only smart business decision, but as it happens, we know that they are not fudging with the RNG. It’s just RNG at its best (and worst).

You guys are a perfect example of how people perceive “randomness”. You think randomness means everything is distributed equally. It’s doesn’t, so stop thinking like that.

True randomness means there needs to be some extremely “unlucky” streaks, and some extremely “lucky” streaks. If there weren’t, it would not be truly random.

I’ll give you a good exercise that might or might not open your eyes.

Write down a series of 0s and 1s in what you think is a truly random sequence. Make it long enough, say for example 100 numbers.

Then, start up excel and enter this formula:

=ROUND ( RAND ( ) ; 0)

And copy it through 100 cells.

Let me know your observations when you compare your own “random” sequence and the computer generated random sequence.

Finally, I would like to say true randomness in an MMO probably isn’t the best way of handling progression and loot. A good system would be random, but would also include a so-called “streak-killer” algorithm, that would cut (at least) bad streaks eventually, guaranteeing a “hit” after enough “misses”.

Well if the chances of each possibility is equal, then you should have an equal distribution in a large sample.

The issue is that every participant in the lottery is aggregated so who are the winning and losing outliers will cancel each other out.

A truly random RNG wont have frequent long streaks like rolling 10 6s consecutively, 10 5s, 10 4s, etc in 60 rolls as an extreme example.

No, but it would have for example a streak of 5 6s quite frequently, and a streak of 10 6s would still not be a super rare anomaly either.

  1. The warrior had might stacked, probably 15+ stacks.
  2. You had vuln stacks from axe #2 and possibly other sources
  3. The warrior was specced for burst damage, most likely having the Burst Mastery trait and the Axe crit damage trait
  4. The warrior had bloodlust stacks and applied strength stacks

And you were probably running all berserker gear with absolutely no defensive stats.

We / I know what RNG means, but if always suck for me, and always not for him, thats not truly RNG, RNG affects him too, then why RNG is his side always?
;)

You still don’t understand. In order for random to be random, some of the players in a particular MMO’s population must have “rotten luck” and some of them must have “amazing luck”. Otherwise it’s not random.

Sucks to be the one getting the short stick, but hey you can at least take some pride in that you’re keeping the Cups of the Random Scale balanced.

Of those, I would think Pistol and Torch are the top contenders. Maybe a melee staff if the Revenant gets one, too. Hopefully they’ll add a bunch of more melee-like skins for the staffs.

Eve Online lol. If I want to “play” by watching small dots on the screen swarming around the screen and a table on the right side I’ll play excel, thanks.

Eve might have the most open world and the best framework, but the gameplay itself is way too detached for the wider audience.

GvG seems relatively easy to implement and it would be a nice move towards mass pvp community. WvW overall changes are far more complex.

Now the numbers game. It’s bit like the carriage driver saying in the beggining of 20th century saying: why’d you invest in them useless cars. Carriage is far more superior. lolz Or even a better comparison with MOBA becoming so popular in short period of time.

I can think of at least few hundred (few hardcore guilds 30+ members) players who have left the game due to the lack of changes in WvW area. Also these are the players who devote themselves to gaming. All the strategic/build/class theorycrafting can improve the game in general.

Tbh my best time playing GW2 where the betas, staying up all night excited that we are enetering something new with guildies. And here we are. I’m aware I’m not the best example since i hate the PvE (thank you Anet for gear balance, a no gear grind).

I agree the move to MOBA like mechanics might bring a lot more players to sPvP. Still, the few hundred you mentioned is a grain of sand compared to the hundreds of thousands of PvE players Anet is trying to keep playing by offering them enough content.

Don’t get me wrong. I would absolutely LOVE for Anet to give us PvPers (and WvWers if you want to separate them) loads and loads more content, especially when PvP content has generally a lot more longevity due to the unpredictability of the battlefield. I’m however also a realist, and understand that in order to run a successful business, Anet needs to cater to their core audience first and foremost.

You could think about it also in a positive way. Because of those hundreds of thousands of PvE players we have this game in the first place and they can give us crumbs of updates every now and then.

Actually, I’d say it’s safe to say you won’t need the expansion for the WvW map. Could you imagine that? Sorry, you can’t play during this rotation, when it was totally free before. That’s bad business.

I’ll eat my hat if I’m wrong, but I’d imagine this is going to be like how WoW handles expansions. Most of it comes in an expansion patch that upgrades the game for everyone, and only the new progression stuff is gated by the box (level cap, new areas, etc. for WoW). Revenant and Specializations might be locked out, along with Maguuma, but I’d be very surprised if they required you to buy it for quality of life upgrades. That would be horrible business.

We don’t know if the new WvW map will replace any of the existing maps. It could very well be an additional map on top of the four we have currently. In that scenario, I could totally see blocking people out of that particular map.

Actually I don’t see a way it actually could replace any of the current BL maps, because from what I understand the new map will not favor any one faction, so it is not a “home” borderland for anyone.

I could be totally wrong, of course. I agree that if it is indeed a “home borderland” and will replace one of the BL maps it needs to be free for all. Kind of hope it will be like that, because otherwise we will see WvW poulation splitting over yet another map, which we really do not need, even if it is certain that in the beginning there will be an absolute flood of players coming (back) to WvW.

I would also love to be able to play GW2 with a controller, but as there are no console versions planned, I don’t think it’s coming either.

No they did not, the current mod is called ICM, immersive combat mod. It breaks none of ANets usage rules, and is used by tens of thousands of players, and none of which have ever been banned, including Woodenpotatoes the streamer they invited to host pax with them last weekend who uses it on air and publicly recommends it.

Guarantee you 1000% that it will be worlds easier to just farm the gold and buy them, and you can be darn sure that the collections will include items that only come from doing things like “solo each champion in Orr” or some dumb gimmick like that.

Knowing ANet by now, you’re right about it. Yeah, I’m 101% sure they will come up with some crazy grindy kitten, because, you know…they NEED to make it a grind. So in the end, it will be easier to just farm for gold and buy it from the TP. I’m actually curious about those people who asked for the precursor scavanger hunt : how many of them (I’m pretty sure about 90% of them) will rage on the forums about the scavanger hunt after it will be ingame?

Well if the Luminescent set is any indication, completing the collection will require both some RNG luck and some grinding. I would still assume it will be varied enough not to feel like a grind, even if it would take a long time. Varied because for the pre hunt they don’t have to concentrate the collection on (mostly) one zone, like they did with the Luminescent collections.

Probably not. There were a couple of mods that turned GW2 combat closer to what you see in TERA, for example, but Anet ruled that any such mods would be grounds for account suspension if anyone was found using them.

I would also love to be able to play GW2 with a controller, but as there are no console versions planned, I don’t think it’s coming either.

Question about pets with Rangers!

Chat commands to talk to people are:

/s for “say”, which shows your text to the players in the immediate vicinity. They will also see your text in a speech bubble over your head.

/m for “map”, which shows the text on the zone you’re currently in.

/g is for guild chat once you’ve joined, and /p is for party chat.

Pressing G will open your guild panel. You will need to get an invite from a guild and it will appear there on the lower left corner. You can join up to 5 guilds and they are all common across all your characters. Each character can “represent” a different guild, though.

Ranger in WvW after balance patch

A warrior has, at most, 5.25 seconds, and it requires an additional trait (missile deflection), and the usage of both offhand sword and offhand shield. If just running OH shield, they have 3 seconds… and they still have to sacrifice a trait in a line that would usually be better spent elsewhere.

Mace mainhand has a 1,5 second block too, so you can in theory have 6,75 seconds of blocking. Would be a pretty weird build though.

When I want to go solo roaming, I pick a thief. Why? Because it has by far the most potential to get in, kill someone quickly and get out before the zerg runs you over. Low risk vs. high reward. That’s thief gameplay for you.

When I go roaming in a small group I… Ok who am I kidding. We still pick thieves because of the funnies of instagibbing anything and disappearing before they even realize one of them died.

That’s the reason I play ranger. I get to bathe in the tears of all the thieves qqing about rapid fire tracking through stealth.

I believe you kill lots of bad thieves intrigued by the low risk high reward gameplay I mentioned. A good thief will still eat a LB ranger for breakfast. They don’t even have to spec for it. Just slot a couple more teleport gap closers and you’re done. Most bad rangers at that point panic and try to run. Good ones might still have a chance, but they’re up for an uphill battle for sure.

My guess is we won’t get to kill Mordremoth within the first patch of HoT. Instead, there will be another Living Story updates that lead into the final fight.

Just my guess based on how WoW expansions are handled. The final raid is not released right away.

Unranked: massive increase in noobs

hotjoin/practice is not the place where you learn to play. The only thing you do learn there is how to maipulate spectator mode and win/lose 4vs5.

This.

You will get absolutely NO practice whatsoever in 90% of the “Practice” game mode matches. It’s a place where people go to abuse team joining/spectator/autobalance mechanics to quickly get their daily achievements done. It’s also the place where dragon ranks go to team stack and take a dump on noobs for just the fun of it.

Unranked is the lowest tier where you can actually practice getting better in sPvP. Play ranked or improve your MMR if you can’t stand people who are trying to get better. Or better yet, whisper them with helpful tips to improve their gameplay. You might even help your team win by making them understand basic Conquest mechanics and tactics.

However, to get enough gold to even get 100 gems… that’s going to take a lot of farming.

Yeah that’s like… 10 dungeon speedruns. If you do only the quick paths, you can do it in ~3 hours over 2 days.
