Laurels concerns

If it’s any consolation the Ascended will not make you a god or open up any content you couldn’t do with Exotic.

I get it that you need to have a goal to work towards. How about working towards a legendary in the meantime while you wait for the laurels? What about WvW ranks? Achievement points?

In summary though, if all you care for progression is your stats, GW2 is probably the wrong game for you. Sorry.

Well, it’s a bit obvious it’s answer a.
A 5 second chill can impossibly reduced to 0.5s (reduction of 90%)

It’s quite easy to understand actually, I even never thought about it.

Your Condition Duration gets higher with runes, trait, sigils and food (100% + 30% from traitline + 10% rune + 20% bleed/poison/burn + 40%= 200% is your own Condition Duration)

However, your whole 200% Condition Duration stands for 100% effective amount.

If opponent has -40% food + -33% traited + -20% rune= -93%

Now ofcourse, it’s very obvious it’s not going to be 100% – 93%
It is obvious it’s going to be 200% – 93% = 107% condi duration left

Now if we’re talking about Bers Stance, it covers the whole EFFECTIVE 100%, which means the theoretical 200%

Is it so obvious?

When running on my warrior who has a total of 93% reduction on chilled/crippled and immobilized I’m practically immune to them. So either my enemies are not running +duration food/runes/traits or the system actually does work like (b).

That’s why I asked if anyone has actually tested this.

did you read the thread?

it has been tested, retested by others, and still this question constantly pops up, and the answer is always the same: it is additive. it is not multiplicative.

I did read the thread and nobody showed me real testing evidence until after I kept asking for it. Sorry for not taking the word of random forum posters

Now that the evidence is there, case is closed. I’ll still have to comment though that a baffling amount of the enemies I fight in WvW seems to be running very little if at all +Duration buffs, because I’m still pretty unstoppable (in the sense of not snared/rooted/chilled) there with my warrior. But that’s a problem for them to solve, not me.

Thanks for all who took the time to dig out the testing evidence.

I don’t really know why the match needs to kick everyone out so quickly. There is really no time to discuss about the match, etc.

Might be because Anet doesn’t want people to rage over losing or w/e, but that’s not really a valid reason, because you could always block the ragers if you wanted, or leave the match if you were done talking.

Writs of Experience and Mastery XP

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

So going along with that, do you guys think that Tomes of Knowledge that specifically increase the level by one(instead of giving a flat xp amount) will work for MP as well? I guess technically it gives you enough xp to level though.

Most likely not, since people are sitting on stacks of those tomes and they would max out their masteries in a matter of minutes after the expansion launches.

Masteries are meant to be the main character progression of Guild Wars 2 and they are also account bound. Being able to shoot through that progression with Tomes would be the most stupid business decision ever.

Higher precursor drop rates?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Tom Gore.4035

Tom Gore.4035

I think the rate is up. I mean i know the announcement helped drop prices, but the volume is definitely up too. http://www.gw2spidy.com/item/29180

That may be just from an influx of players, but the volume has been pretty high over the last couple months.

Maybe people are holding out making their legendary…

Or people who had been holding on to precursors, watching the prices rise have now noticed the prices are dropping and are panic-selling their supply.

This is the most likely scenario here. It’s the increased volume of people getting rid of their extra precursors that are driving the price down.

Writs of Experience and Mastery XP

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Related to this. Are Mastery points also earned in WvW when you’re 80? If not, what will exp be replaced with in WvW, or will it just be removed and all we earn is WXP? If the latter is the case, what happens to toons below 80 in WvW? Will they still earn exp AND WXP at the same time, or will they stop earning WXP until they are 80?

I would actually be delighted if you could not earn WXP until you’re level 80. That would considerably reduce the amount of uplevels in EotM.

I would have to agree. Getting 100 interrupts is too much of a grindfest. Tier 1: 1 interrupt. Tier 2 of achievement: 100?! April is not here yet, so no April Fool’s joke. An extra zero at the end? No, because I’ve gone above 10 interrupts. So it’s simply grind, grind, grind!

Oh boy! If this is any indication of the forecoming new systems in the super-hyped expansion, there will be trouble. Mastery system, wink-wink.

Arguably, achievements are optional (there are 2 sides to this crowd). But, that’s no excuse for the unbalanced amount of the aforementioned achievement. Even within the newly set of achievements for the Dragon Ball activity, the “Dragon’s Gaze” achieve is out of order.

Did Anet even have someone or anyone, sit down, and play the game? A process known as testing the game. Perhaps the content wasn’t as important as to whether it works or not. Almost as if the 2 week mark to release new stuff came right around the corner, and they did a rush job to push out this tiny amount of content. But, to make it last longer, the traditional answer to mmorpg: grind.

Inb4 the ‘YOU DON’T NEED™ IT SO IT ISN’T GRIND, YOU JUST WANT IT, ITS YOUR FAULT IF YOU MAKE IT A GRIND’ harpies descend.

Putting an opposing argument in capital letters and calling people harpies doesn’t make it wrong. People have to learn that if they’re not enjoying doing something in-game, that’s a good time to stop doing that thing and do something else they enjoy better.

In this case, though, I admit I do have to wonder why anybody would want to do that achievement.

Well for me personally, I’m already a massive achievment kitten, but this one has the added allure of being temporary. It’d be one thing if this content was permanent and you could get it at your own pace, but it’s gonna go away… whenever the update ends (don’t think ANet even said how long this would last), so if you miss it now you potentially miss it for good (assuming it never comes back again)

You’re not seriously comparing that to the WvW achievements, are you?

Let’s see, with an average of 2 interrupts per game (not very hard if you go for them) it would take you 50 games. At about 10 minutes per game that would be a total of 8 hours and 20 minutes, or about 4 days of intense Dragon Ball gaming.

Now let’s compare that to the Yakslapper. At a rate of killing one Dolyak per 2 minutes, which is pretty generous given that you cannot usually keep that pace for long, it would take 33,333 hours. Let’s say you’re really hardcore and play for 8 hours per day every day, you’d be done in 4,166 days, or 11 and a half years.

No, I don’t think we’re even on the same scale of magnitude here.

First off, assuming you DO get 2 per game and… I don’t know how 50 games would ever equal 8hrs, or how 8hrs would equal 4 days, but putting math aside, I’ve had so many games where I just get no interrupts because the few times I manage to actually get the pickup and live long enough to use it, the bugger either evades or their timing isn’t matched with mine. And it’s VERY strict timing.

Second, the difference between this and Yakslapper is that Yakslapper is permanent, but this is temporary, so at least Yakslapper can be done at your own pace.

I put the math there, assuming a match per 10 minutes and was very lenient on the hours per day gameplay. Even with my quite lenient assumptions AND taking days off, you could still get the achievement in less than a week.

Did you even look at the numbers? Yes, Yakslapper is permanent, but even by killing one Dolyak per 2 minutes and playing for EIGHT hours EVERY DAY, it would still take more than ELEVEN YEARS to get it.

The difference between these two achievements is so enormous it’s like comparing the trip to the moon to interstellar travel.

Taking condition damage while "invulnerable".

in PvP

Posted by: Tom Gore.4035

Tom Gore.4035

No it doesn’t. It only reduces condition duration by 100%. If the opponent is running +Condition Duration buffs you are still affected.

Now I know we’re not all math majors and numbers are hard, but you should think really hard about what “reduce incoming condition duration by 100%” means. And if you’re still having trouble with that, go back to grade school and review percentages.

I know what you mean. What I don’t know (as I haven’t tested) is how GW2 calculates condition durations.

Is the calculation like DurationX * (DurationIncrease1+DurationIncrease2-DurationDecrease2).

Or like DurationX * (DurationIncrease1+DurationIncrease2) * DurationDecrease2.

I would actually really like to know, because it would make a BIG difference for my Warrior’s WvW build, which has a -93% duration decrease for Chilled, Cripples and Immobilize.

Let’s imagine a necro is running +40% condi duration food and +10% condi duration runes, and casts a 5 second chill, is the end result

a) 5 * (100% + 40% + 10% – 93%) = 5 * 57% = 2,85 seconds

or

b) 5 * (100% + 40% + 10%) * (100% – 93%) = 5 * 150% * 7% = 0,525 seconds.

As you can see there is a HUGE difference.

Anyone done or willing to do the testing?

Anyone?

Why the hints of Cantha?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Tom Gore.4035

Tom Gore.4035

I am just going to say this: This fascination for Cantha is inching closer towards schizophrenia.

There is nothing presented within the last 2-3 months that so much as hints towards Cantha coming out anytime soon. And ill explain…

When Rytlock opened those doors, all I heard was air and creaks. Not even a syllable of the word “Cantha” was uttered. Its like staring at a Rorschach except with sound and hearing. You can imagine what the ink stain is all you like but the reality is it is an inkstain.

This Celebration of the Ram is an official celebration. It is currently the year of the Ram meaning that celebrating it is a legitimate medium to create events within the game. But just because its all “asiany”, it is in no way hinting towards a release of Cantha at any point within the next year at minimum. HoT is about Mordremoth and Maguuma, not Cantha. And expect a LS that ends with the defeat of Mordremoth since it will most likely keep us occupied until the next expansion. Speculation can run wild at that point.

But kitten , use a little common sense instead of screaming “CANTHA?!” at the slightest and most indirect hint of Asian culture.

What about the serpent encased in Jade in the Durman Priory archive?

It’s both a gold sink and a deterrent for “enterprising” GW2 players to game the exchange rate and make a profit. Think about it. If the difference would be, say only 5%, it would be profitable to buy gems today, wait for a couple of months and sell the gems.

Anet does not want people to make profit on selling and buying gems/gold. Plain and simple. That’s why there is a staggering 20% cut both ways.

in WvW

Posted by: Tom Gore.4035

Tom Gore.4035

That is actually a great idea and would definetly be an improvement for WvW. A short, maybe 3-4 min event for reviving the yak. It would help defending them and it would mean attackers have to risk them getting back up if they just snipe and move on.

I cannot see any real cons to it.

3-4 minutes is way too long. That would actually slow down most Dolyak routes compared to sending a new Dolly to replace the dead one.

1 minute should be plenty if there is anyone there defending the dolly train.

Anet has also said the areas are partially closed off by walls (that are connected to towers). If the walls are long enough the roamers could plausibly blast through them at a remote point quickly enough.

I think it’s a good change, assuming there will be some kind of chance for the roamers to hide and escape within those walls, enabling nice cat&mouse chases “behind enemy lines”.

At the moment, there is not really any reason to go hunt for roamers, because even if you catch them they can be back at the same location in a few minutes tops.

Solo roamers are probably in a bit less useful position in the new maps, but I don’t think solo roaming is something they should build the WvW experience upon anyway.

Anyone going to purchase the expansion

in WvW

Posted by: Tom Gore.4035

Tom Gore.4035

Yea, they probably will not resolve the issue prior to the expansion, although that would be the best time to resolve it permanently, so that when new players coming in get to play good wvw matches instead of getting stuck in a broken tier. Showing players the best wvw experience when they come in is more likely to keep them playing rather than getting them stuck in a broken tier and telling them " if you don;t like it pay to transfer to a non broken one" that just isn’t good customer service. The best time to resolve the issues with wvw is BEFORE they bring in more people to see it.

I’m pretty the resulting massive queues would be even worse experience than low populated maps. And about your solution…

Ideally they would greatly reduce the number of NA servers to about 6 or so, then add more active maps that can be populated at the same time per server, thus increasing the number of players allowed in each match to reduce the ques without causing a crash. Creating a system that allows for more maps during peak hours and reducing the number of active maps during slow hours would make for much more balanced and enjoyable wvw experience since 1) Less ques but allows for more players playing at once. 2) More active maps to choose from. 3) No dead servers reduces the imbalance issues since they actually have 24/7 coverage for 6 servers thus allowing players to always have other people to play with on their server and not leaving them in a ghost town.

How would you propose to handle PPT with dynamically created and deleted maps? If a server is holding most of the map when it’s deleted, wouldn’t they feel cheated out of their hard earned points?
