Anything else than a controlled environment such as sPvP would not be a good base for any “serious” GvG.

What do you mean? You can currently purchase additional character slots up until you have 64 character slots.

Whether or not one will be included as bonus in the box (IF it will be sold as a box at all), we don’t know. Would be nice of course.

Maybe they will have several versions. One barebone with just the minimum and one with a lot of extra stuff, including char slot expansion etc.

Better optimization Is Needed

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Tom Gore.4035

… a lot of misinformation …

Sorry but your computer doesn’t wait for the server while it draws the frames, so the bandwidth is irrelevant when talking about FPS.

Now lag is a whole different thing (and I know a lot of people talk about lag when they get low FPS, which has nothing to do with it). Lag can cause warping (other players’ characters jumping around your screen) and delay in both your skills executing after they keypress, and them registering on the enemy (and you getting the feedback in the form of damage readings). You may have noticed that all skills that deal damage have a casting time. This is there because not just balance reasons, but the fact that in order for your computer to show the damage appearing on the enemy at the time your attack “finishes”, it must have first sent the “I’m going to attack this guy” information to the server and get feedback from the server “ok you hit the guy and did this much damage” before the attack is finished.

There is nothing much you can do to improve lag once you’ve got a decent connection. I’ve not monitored how much data your client receives in a big WvW combat, but I would believe it’s pretty manageable by any modern broadband connection. The problem comes when the server has to process all that information coming from 100 players and also outgoing to 100 players. I’ve also understood that one of the main reasons for server side lag (causing the infamous skill lag) for GW2 is that every condition stack on every creature is tracked individually, with a timer for each. That’s not a small amount of extra data to be sent across all the clients when there is a 50 vs 50 vs 50 fight happening on a small area.

Now about the FPS, there is a lot to do to improve it. Both yourself by upgrading your PC, and by Anet to optimize the client software. Server software, I say again, has zero impact on your FPS. Zero. Now, MMO clients are notoriously difficult to optimize due to the fact that practically every character model is different in both meshing and textures. This puts a tremendous load on your GPU. On top of that in WvW there also is a problem on the CPU which I guess is busy doing client-side movement prediction on all the player characters. Movement prediction is an algorithm (or a series of them) that tries to “guess” where the other player character models are going while the client is waiting for the server to send an updated position and speed vectors for that character.

Hope this clarifies some misconceptions about lag and FPS drops, and gives you and idea what you can and cannot do to improve them.

Not comically evil like Faolain but the story ended with us learning the awful things she did in her past, just before she steals the egg again and leaves us at the mercy of Mordremoth’s beast. I don’t think her betrayal is going to get a pass, at least not without some serious attempt at redemption.

Well if the final words before the confrontation with the Shadow of the Dragon was any indication, it looks like Anet has already decided for us that we must forgive her, because she says she’s on the same side as we are.

Unless Anet suddenly turns GW2 into an open PvP game I don’t think we’ll ever get any other choice than to just cope with Caithe and the rest of the Sylvari.

The Problem With Practice

in PvP

Posted by: Tom Gore.4035

Tom Gore.4035

You need to realize there is a LARGE amount of people participating in “pvp” who actually have no interest in PvP

These are the same players who go on champ trains and karma trains – They are interested in one thing and one thing only EASY REWARDS

It is a necessary evil – let them play with each other in practice mode

My idea above would in most cases restrict this “reward train” to exactly one game, without the need of team juggling to cheat yourself a “win”. Lots of frustration could be avoided for everyone if they didn’t need to win to get their daily.

Only other solution I can see to this is to go back to how it was and remove any and all PvE related rewards from PvP forever. Unfortunately that would practically kill the game mode short of the small and tenacious competitive crowd. Good or bad? Depends on who you ask, I would say.

Could work, of course, if the hackers learn that they might be monitored at any time, they might be discouraged from hacking in the first place.

No matter what her intentions were, she was still crazy. In D&D terms, she might be considered Chaotic Good. Her ultimate plan was to free the Sylvari from being Mordremoths minions, but the way she went about it certainly wasn’t the best. However through the machine and her visions, it’s pretty clear now that she was being influenced by Mordremoth, which led to him being awakened. While her plan probably was to disrupt the ley lines, and keep him asleep so she could take him out while he slept, attacking everyone else probably wasn’t the best idea.

Chaotic Good don’t go murdering people left and right just to further their own goal, no matter how noble that goal would be. Chaotic Neutral might be close.

Sylvari – The Only Dragonborn Race in Guild Wars 2. #bejealous

To my understanding Sylvari are neither dragonborn nor imbued with dragon energy. Sylvari originate from a Tree that sprouts from a magical seed we don’t know much about. This seed was planted by Ronan and Ventari who weren’t dragon minions either.

Since Sylvari are so closely related to the spheres of influence of Mordremoth (plant and mind), they are vulnerable to his corruption when exposed to it, but they’re not born dragon minions.

Of all the races, Sylvari are still the most resilient, only susceptible to Mordremoth under certain conditions, while completely immune to the other dragons. Which is also why I don’t understand why the other races seem to be intent on waging war on the Sylvari. I mean, nobody considered commiting genocide to Humans, Asura, Charr and Norn, because Jormag, Zhaitan and Kralkatorrik can turn their dead bodies into dragon minions. For good reason I might add.

You haven’t played the last LS episode, have you? Or are you just disputing the reveal?

I can't come back to this game..

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Tom Gore.4035

The OP as summed up GW2 problem really thou…essentially once you reach 80th lvl and unlocked everything on your character that’s a end to any character development.

After that, there is nothing you can do to make your character more powerful, no character development at all. Essentially game over, once you have all 8 classes to lvl 80 with everything unlocked.

Define “everything unlocked”? If you say “everything unlocked” means having full ascended gear you don’t understand the meaning of horizontal progression vs. vertical. GW2 is a horizontal progression game (although it seem by introducing Ascended gear they took a step into vertical direction, albeit a quite small one) where your character progression is measured by your achievements and wardrobe/miniature/title etc. unlocks.

If you mean by “everything unlocked” having all achievements done, and all wardrobe items and miniatures unlocked, then yes I agree that’s about as game over as it can be in an MMO. I don’t think anyone has done it yet, though.

What I don’t understand is why the megaserver system keeps putting people into instances with very few people and 0% progress instead of the dozen almost full instances with 20-50% progress.

I suspect that the megaserver algorithms simply have not been programmed to take the specifics of zones like Dry Top and the Silverwastes into account. In these zones with map-wide meta-events, the megaserver system should take meta-event progress into account when putting people into instances and when deciding which instances to close. It doesn’t, from what I’ve seen.

Yeah. Because when you think about it, I don’t think anyone would go “Awwww! It’s 90% done and now I don’t get to grind the same events 20 times before the breach!”

In this zone the more the merrier, so the megaserver system should always try to cram people into the almost full instances and once they’re full, start filling up the next instance, instead of throwing people into multiple almost empty instances with 0% progress.

MMOs don’t work like that. They would still need to be able to verify that you are allowed to play the game, i.e. that you have a valid and active account.

And the biggest problem is that some calculations and confirmations are done server side, so they would need to invest a lot of money to program the client to be able to do all those calculations instead.

If you have everything else but Dawn, just grind the rest and/or play the TP (200g is a nice start for that) to earn the rest and buy it. Otherwise you might lose much more than 1k into the Mystic Toilet and be really frustrated.

Tom Gore.4035

Now that I’ve played a thief in PvP a bit I’m starting to be able to beat them 1v1 with some success – that is to say I don’t lose to kittenty thieves anymore.

But Mesmers, unless they’re backpedaling special people, still crap on me without much trouble. Sure I can sometimes manage to kill one, but it always feels I just got lucky more than actually outplaying them.

Can anyone point me to a video or a guide that would help me learn how to fight mesmers? The build I’m currently using is this:

http://gw2skills.net/editor/?fJMQNAR3ejMdU2ZZIehwJaAmgCZnPBHT7AQ9T85LBA-TVSEABIcQAA4IAolSwlU+VwFAIiHAAb6GYU9HY2fgMALLA-w

The two biggest problems I seem to have against them is the stupidly high damage from a shatter burst, taking as much as 12k out of my health within a second or two, and the problem figuring out where the Mesmer is after it ports/stealths.

Now for the first problem, are there any tells when the burst is coming and how often can the mesmer do it? I have plenty of evades, blocks and invulns in the build, so it’s not a problem of having one up, but more like it happening so fast I can’t react.

Second problem, how far do they teleport and are there any restrictions on the direction they can go to? How often can they stealth/teleport?

I think it might also be beneficial to watch some mesmer videos beating warriors to get the other PoV of my problem. Tips?

I know the best solution would be to play a mesmer myself, but the problem is I’m out of character slots and the class doesn’t interest me one bit (apart from killing it over and over again in revenge).

The new expansion will change WvW, so I heard. At this point, we’ll just have to wait.

Interesting. Beside
https://www.guildwars2.com/en/news/preview-of-upcoming-balance-changes/
that says nothing about WvW, I just found
http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Upcoming_changes_and_features
but it only says about World versus World:

  • Improving the commander functionality: Being discussed, but not being worked on yet
  • Matchup information made available ahead of time is looked into, but complicated.

I think he was referring to the Heart of Thorns expansion, which they will talk about this Saturday at PAX. Next week’s patch is indeed just a small balance pass.

Now I know there has been absolutely no information about if the expansion will bring anything significant to WvW, but we can of course hope. God knows WvW hasn’t been a priority for Anet since launch, but I believe they will have to give us something in the expansion. What that something is, I have no idea.

Still, I’m expecting breadcrumbs instead of a whole loaf, but anything is better than nothing.

There is of course also the question of paid/unpaid for the expansion. If we have to pay for the expansion, it simply cannot include anything in the paid package for WvW.

Low level cloth: where to get and wtf

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Tom Gore.4035

Tom Gore.4035

There’s one way of getting low level cloth that hasn’t been mentioned yet: opening bags of gear / champ bags with a character that is around the level that gives the cloth you want. The bags will drop gear up to 5 levels below your level, and the level ranges for each cloth is as follows (from wiki):
Jute: 0-20
Wool: 16-33
Cotton: 31-48
Linen: 44-63
Silk: 58-80

So let’s say you want lots of linen. With a character level of 53-57 all light armor you get from the bags should salvage into linen scraps.
Now, opening champ bags on low level characters may not be that smart, but the bags of gear that mostly drop blue gear anyway and are rewarded in SW in good quantities are good for this purpose.

This is what I do…I tried to give this suggestion earlier today but apparently the forums won’t let me post.

The exotic champ bags DO still give the champ weapons and T6 mats regardless of the character opening them. So I send my silverwastes champ bags to my low level characters to open. I get the added bonus of not having gobs of bloodstone dust. When I run out of bloodstone dust I open the champ bags on an 80 to get enough to feed Mawdrey for a few days. I’ve never had to buy any low level mats since I started this and as an added bonus I’m overflowing with iron now too.

This sounds like a much better solution than farming events. And I just happen to have a character of appropriate level. Thanks for the suggestion!

Sorry, brain fart. Iron Marches and this chain is what I meant:

http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Capture_Firewatch_Encampment_from_the_Flame_Legion

Assuming you failed it repeatedly?

Spawns?
Scaling?

No I finished the chain, but I took my time killing the spawns in the first event, since they seem to respawn until the encampment is taken back. The follow-up events also have pretty good spawns of Flame Legion, although they don’t scale very high up.

As said, probably could be much more efficient than that, but I managed to get ~15-20 scraps per run, then leaving and letting the chain reset and coming back to do it again.

I didn’t check how often the defense event of the camp would trigger if you chose to just run that repeatedly and if that one scales better.
