Define dead.
If you mean does anyone play the game mode anymore, then, NO it is not dead. Just last night I seen a map queue in EBG rolling tower after tower with the occasional roamer getting splattered like a bug on a windshield.
If however you mean dead as in the BL’s then YES it is. We have told ANet time and time again we don’t want more PvE with our WvW. Instead they feel that all we really needed to become happy was dinosaurs.
I cannot offer any suggestions save maybe having ANet get some suggestions in the form of a cdi from actual WvW players. but I cannot see that happening anytime soon; sadly.
Should remove nodes altogether. If you want to mine, chop trees or pick flowers go to pve
Yep, there is nothing quite like seeing your entire defense force gathering at the synthesizers when the enemy is at the gates.
Welcome to the new wonderful world of PvE WvW.
I was running a condi reaper using onslaught, but now I may start using deadly chill when not farming. Onslaught still wins out IMO when you are surrounded with trash, but this change makes it so you can actually pack a bit of a punch against some mobs.
Good change, and it makes deadly chill much more viable.
The first year was a beauty, it had the labyrinth, dungeon and clock tower, but it also had a very fun scavenger hunt for an exclusive backpiece. The second year introduced the bloody prince but the dungeon was missing, as was the scavenger hunt. The third year saw a total rehash of the second year with nothing changed except new merchants for cobs. This year is more of the same as last year, however they did at least give us the dungeon back.
If I have forgotten anything then I apologize, but my point was that as the years go by it seems so does that “special” feeling the festivals used to grant. It may just be me seeing things through rose colored glasses, but one thing is for sure we didn’t get our scavenger hunt back this (or any of the three previous) year(s), and the last couple years have just felt like a lazy attempt to “celebrate” for the sake of it.
This year they may have run out of time to do much with the launch of HoT, but I AM REALLY HOPING next year is much more special!
P.S. Would decorating more than just a few small “islands” in L.A. really be that hard to do?
If auto loot is not suppose to work in WvW then why does it seem that the rez speed is working fine there? Although mentor is disabled It does seems to me that one of the pack mastery lines is working there and that is quite misleading. If a dev could answer this query I would be interested in knowing as I cannot turn off my pack mastery to check, thanks.
I spent a full week in SW to get the mastery that was advertised to work in WvW when first announced then why the sudden backpedal when HoT goes live?
Seems to be someone around here is confused. All I know for sure is that in this case I am a very upset customer.
I only WvW up until the new maps arrived. I absolutely miss WvW and it is horrible even trying to roam. It takes me more than 5 minutes to run around a desert just to be killed
by 7 guards in a camp along with wolf dogs (where the hell they came from). I left WvW and started to play my other online games until Anet brings back WvW. Also everyone seems to be Butt Jamming in EBG now. Thank God for one solid map
If by solid you mean constant disconnects, 2 second skill lag and huge queues then yes I’d give it a 10/10. I’m farming the labyrinth for one more day then trying to get some of the new PvE maps done and I am hoping (lol) that once I have most of them explored they will (again lol) have fixed some of the problems.
As for the new maps, nobody in my guild likes them, far to much PvE and some of the mechanics generally don’t promote skill at all, just ambush tactics; and I am not fond of those. I don’t know who did the beta testing on them but you would have been better off with just a wide open map with 3 spawn points IMO.
In closing, dear ANet, please fix the game mode I have come to enjoy for 3 years. Currently I have a choice of hoping you can hire an actual WvW guild to help you design maps or just wait until a new game is released that will “do it for me”.
How am I supposed to be leveling masteries?
in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns
Posted by: Tommyknocker.6089
I’ve found once you get the basic ones out of the way (1st level of each line and updrafts for gliding), working on HoT Mysteries isn’t that bad. I wander, do events and map completions, swap to alts and work on Hero Points for their specializations, help friends and guildies in HoT… and generally just try to have fun and not worry about the Masteries, and after a while I’ll notice my XP bar has filled up. Weee!
Agreed. The old adage of a watched pot never boiling is very on point here.
I did SW for the pack mastery and before I know it I was done. Relax and enjoy the scenery you will get there eventually.
Players farming Cof would crash the servers.
Seriously just NO.
I’ll agree that “elite” was a terrible choice of names,
Why? As I explained above, it fits perfectly with other uses of the word “elite” in regards to character abilities.
It’s terrible because of the expectation of superior performance it evokes for many players. Off the top of my head in 30 seconds~
Secondary Specialization.
Focus Specialization.
Dedicated Specialization.
Alternate Specialization. That language is dripping with choices that show the new options are not part of the core choices but also not inherently superior either. “Elite” was a poor choice and my eyebrows went up the very first moment I read that they were being called that.
I like “Focus Spec” myself, it allows you to see the players has focused enough on a class to unlock alternative skills. And focus suits the progression the player needs to unlock them all.
As for the OP, ANet choose poorly in the naming aspect in that elite in an MMO means many things to many different play styles. Some may think it is something that gives you more flexibility in how you play the class. Many others, as I have seen in the last week, think it is the only thing your character should strive for or you will be useless playing without those specs.
(edited by Tommyknocker.6089)
Just my 2c worth.
I got my pack mastery asap, reassigned my auto loot button to do something else, then ventured into WvW. Thinking I can finally die and still get that illusive precursor at my feet.
Was a very fun first fight trying to reassign my keys back during battle; good thing I ended up on my butt quickly.
Thanks ANet you’re the best /s.
Seriously fix this, I don’t care if it costs 2000 ranks at this point, I have plenty to spare.
Live and let live. If people want to farm for all the masteries so be it, they will be the bored ones in a week. As for myself I unlocked pact mastery so I don’t have to buy a new keyboard but I left the others alone. I don’t do many fractals and I don’t want any legendary due to the grind. If the jungle is barren by the time Halloween is over I don’t mind, I build tanky and once I get a few of the masteries I should be fine.
I am currently sitting on 21 mastery points and I’ll work on the jungle ones when Halloween is over.
Seriously people, it is the player that is or is not “elite”, this change means next to nothing to some.
I have seen some specializations get both totally owned in the jungle, and do the owning. All ANet did with this change is make it so you can get it without having to spend time waiting on someone to help you.
Of course if you are one on the very few that earned them all solo whilst naked, then good for you. However I like having fun, not waiting to have it. As time goes by the wait at a single hero point could be VERY long indeed for those of us that could use some backup; and for that I applaud the change.
edit: clarity
(edited by Tommyknocker.6089)
I think the decision to make them 250 is a nice compromise, but then again I have 9 alts so even that is going to be a bit of a chore. 300 would place it firmly back into the far to many territory, and I’m sorry to say I don’t want to have to give up one (or more) of my alts for the sake of forced game play.
I totally agree. THEY SHOULD LEAVE IT AS IT IS. just because a few people kick up a stink they change it? what about all the people that were just happily playing the game. grow some balls Aent. You’ll lose my respect doing this change.
Ah yes, but they will not lose me and I’m sure many others as customers, so IMO it becomes a good decision.
As has been said multiple times, don’t call it elite. It is not “elite”. Elite is a title given to an alpha class, as in…if you are a reaper you will slaughter every single individual in PvP that isn’t also an elite of some kind without even trying. THAT is elite. This is nothing more than another option, that frankly shouldn’t cost a single HP more than any other spec line.
It’s not elite because it makes you OP. It’s elite because of the level of what it grants you compared to core specs. It’s elite because you would be OP if you could take two of them at the same time.
It’s an “elite specialization” not a “specialization that makes you elite”
Now all you need to do is tell all the others this gem. I have been trying all day to tell players that it is not intended to make you a god of the <insert X class here> but it seems many still call it an elite thinking it is so.
I still think another term would have been better though. I just call it your specialization now.
Edit: also what Bhima said.
And I disagree that the world is round, but it don’t make it any flatter now does it.
As for the topic, I could not be happier for myself or my 9 alts!!
Can we just stop calling them "elite specs " FKS (for kittens sake)!
They are alternate play style, they are no more elite than any other extra trait line with a new weapon. Continuing to refer to them as elite is a misnomer and propagating the fact is just getting asinine at this point. Unlocking them should be an accomplishment yes, but no more so than unlocking your other trait lines/weapons/utilities IMO.
Had to quote myself here.. if you want to call them elites so be it, but honestly they are just an alternate way to play the class otherwise you get power creep and PvP becomes VERY unbalanced.
But when is it going to take effect is a bigger question and how does it affect those who have not spent 250 points yet?
When? That’s a great question lol.
If you spent over 250 they will refund the difference
Yes, but under 250, do they do anything? Do they reward the traits up to what you’ve spent or are those HP gone?
If I had to guess I would say they will refund all your hero points so that thee new system can recalculate them. But as I am not a dev I can only go by past experience.
According to the wiki in base Tyria:
“There are 214 points available if you have the Krait Obelisk Shard in your home instance”
This means you still have to do some of the jungle to unlock your specialization. Sorry but I see no problem with this AT ALL.
Please please please ANET. Stand your ground. Weren’t Masteries and Unlocking Elite Spec supposed to take longer than getting to level 80 in the base game? Why are you folding to the elite spec complaints and not doing anything about the mastery farming?
Sorry I cannot agree with you here, and I would comment further, but I can finally play my reaper!!!
So see ya…
I’m 10 points away from maxing a Tempest… now I feel like my effort has been trivialized.
On the other side of the coin you have me, sitting at home watching a movie because most of my guildies are strangely absent this week.
At least with this change I can finish my specialization on all my characters even if there is nobody around to help me.
I am sorry if it annoys some players, but at least it should bring back many of the forum warriors to the game.
#waitingonpatch
It’s still going to be pretty painful for alts, but I appreciate that they’re making a compromise in a timely manner.
The thing is that there are enough hero points in Tyria to get you most of the way there, and doing a few solo-able HP’s in the jungle is not that hard. I am quite happy now as even if the maps die out I can still get my max specialization.
This is all I wanted, thank you.
Now to just twiddle my thumbs till the patch goes live!
If Anet would of told us this would be Grind Wars, nobody would have bought it. Hence, a lot of people asking for a refund.
I don’t want a refund actually, I just want what I paid for. I, unlike some, am alright with the difficulty, and more or less fine with the mastery system, but the hero point grind has to go IMO.
Sometimes I wish ANet would go back to 2012 and re-watch their manifesto to bring them back down to earth.

I have so many other chars I want to play with the new specialisation and yesterday i stopped HP GRINDING! Yeah GRINDING!!! I want to experience the whole new content with the new specialisation I paid for
A lot of people seem to think that because you paid for the expansion you should get everything unlocked right away. You paid for the content, not the end result.
When you first started playing, did all the skill unlocks happen for every profession? No, you had to play that profession and unlock everything. It was not handed to you on a platter. Nor were the legendaries, nor were the dungeon armor – you had to work for all of them.
You had to GRIND – and nobody complained. Now you do.
And to point to the mantra that you “can play how you want” – that was for the CORE game – which you still can – play how you want. This is an expansion pack, not core game.
And all those that can’t solo everything – you couldn’t solo everything before. Or did I miss that YouTube video of someone soloing SB, kitten, Teq or another world boss? You solo dungeons? You solo WVW and PVP?
How about the guild part of Guild Wars? Get thee a guild and have a guild event to get the things that everyone needs.I know, I know. You get your drivers license and expect a car. Get a job and expect 3 weeks vacation and a huge salary. Well, you can’t buy Masteries with gems or gold – you have to earn it. I believe the elite professions are called ELITE for a reason. Otherwise they would be called EASIES.
All skill points were able to be soloed in the Core Game to 100%, Which is WHY its even more stupid that people who have 100% map completions from core tyria can’t get enough hero points to unlock their specializations. people with 100% core completion are actually punished even more so, because they can’t get Hero points any other way but to wait at a point in HoT for people with the right masteries to come.
So much this. I paid my dues with multiple characters getting map completion only to be set aside like so much dirty laundry come wash day. I’ll admit that getting map completion in old Tyria is not the huge chore that it becomes in HoT, but with this introduction to the Xpac I feel more like a leper than a loyal customer!

Could someone please tell me at what point in the new “forum mastery” line we will unlock the “dev response” trait?
While you’re at it, can you make those things account bound instead of soul bound? Your ranks are account wide, I think their rewards should be as well…
THIS SO MUCH!
My necro well bomber in WvW has little interest in becoming a front line reaper.
Ironically though he will be the only character on my account that will be able to purchase the elite spec.

People really complaining about grinding?
You grind for loot.
You grind for crafting materials.
You grind dungeons for tokens.
Oct. 23rd and the highly anticipated HoT release – within hours people complain about grinding.
smhIt’s not a grind when players enjoy it, in HoT you are forced to get HP by either pve map completion, or through a wvw ktrain. It’s all about perception, people perceive getting hero points as playing the game in a way they do not want to, and oftentimes repeatedly as they have multiple characters.
So yes, HoT is in fact a grind to a large number of players, to say otherwise is just plain dumb.
I would be much, much happier with the xpac if they were to just introduce a way to get hero points that was not locked behind group/mastery content. So long as I could do them solo and on all my current characters I would not even mind the grinding.
And TBH if they ever want me to purchase another character slot, they may want to rethink this whole debacle.
FYI for people that are interested:
AFAIK the exploit was people using WvW tournament tickets to buy Wexp consumables (thimbles, kegs, that sort of thing) and speed leveling the hero points.
Having a bad week is seems as I was actually trying to do some of the (grindy) PvE stuff to get mine and I have over 400 tickets in my bank.
#alwaysthelasttoknow
I think there may be a bug with the megaserver system and empty maps.
yes it’s called halloween events
Well TBH EotM seems to be VERY alive and well this week for some reason rolleyes.

When you buy a Zelda game do you cry to Nintendo that you can’t go onto and complete the last dungeon, have all equipment, at the start of the game? Prerelease they marketed progression in this expansion to that of Zelda and Metroid, you knew what you were getting into.
If, without taking sides, I understand the argument – and to use DOOM as my analogy: some players are arguing that they’re being forced to play through almost the entire campaign only to get the shotgun at the end, when all they wanted was to play through the campaign with the shotgun. Especially since they were given the impression from the box cover art that the shotgun would be standard issue.
Kind of, But.
Take the shotgun and put it behind a barrier that you cannot reach unless you have 4 other players standing on a pressure plates at the same time. And this is after you have played the game to death over 3 years using the same weapon and you will begin to see the problem.
I find it very funny that a few names in this thread were, before the launch of HoT, promoting the increase in difficulty of the open world and encouraging Anet to do it. Now that they got what they wanted they cry wolf and run back home.
I’ll be frank here. I have been playing the game solo for a few months after I left my main guild. From playing HoT, it is definitely difficult playing solo. But why is it so difficult? The simple answer is that mobs are actually a threat. I could walk through 5 normal mobs in Orr and easy kill all of them. Not so in HoT. If there are pocket raptors I sure as hell better pop defensive abilities when they swarm me. Snipers? Kill them first.
The content isn’t unplayable solo. It is possible solo but more challenging and a bit slower. To be completely honest, I love this change. Because you know what it’s promoted me to do? Actually talk with people in the map and group up and form parties. It reminds me so much of Maplestory (prior Big-Bang). THAT was a game where you had to pretty much party with others late game and just grind mobs over and over. The upside to that game was that it forced you to get social with people and make connections. These maps are promoting that and anyone who is crying how “hardcore” it is has never even touched something hardcore. Difficult content is not hardcore. Hardcore in MMO’s are when you invest a large chunck of play time towards a specific goal or set of goals.
The one thing they could help is make it so that the HP are more solo-friendly but otherwise leave the rest of the open world alone please.
Anet, please for the love of god don’t nerf the open world.
I agree with you and I was one the players that wanted the mobs to be tougher. What I don’t like is that after 3 years of playing the game I am now forced to find enough players to get the HP for the elite spec that was advertised. And trying to do so in maps with an ever diminishing population.
I did not invite 5 friends to pitch in on the cost of the game, then why should it require I need 5 friends (or more) to complete some of the hero points in order to unlock my elite? It would seem at this time that full map completion means nothing!
I am not asking for a nerf at all, and I am an older gamer with less than perfect reflexes. I like a challenge, something the core game does not give in the least. I do however want to get what I paid for and an elite spec locked behind not only masteries, but needing groups is not it. As I have said in other threads, the price is to high for the elite concidering the fact it is not so much an elite, but just a different playstyle.
Why elite spec reqs DON'T need to be changed
in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns
Posted by: Tommyknocker.6089
I agree with you, the elite specs don’t need to be changed, however I don’t need to play the game either. Even today I spend more hours on these forums than I have spend playing and it is only 4 days after launch.
It is true that I can only speak for myself, but most my guildies are strangely absent, and the ones that came online today are either farming eotm or the labyrinth.
I bought mine when candy corn was in the area of 12 copper a piece. I used it for a year and at that time you could max out 7 days of WXP boosts rather cheaply and easily. Now, however the price is almost 4 times that per candy corn and it requires APX 8 full stacks to max out a day of XP buffs.
Mine is currently sitting on one of my bank alts due to the fact that paying 8 gold for a full day of 50% buffs is just to steep; and this is during Halloween. I got my use out of it, but it is a totally useless item to me now TBH.
Post in map chat or LFG for Hero Points. I’ve done this for several of them and never had to wait that long. Honestly, usually you don’t even have to be the one to post. It’s fairly common to see parties in LFG asking for help with specific HP (the Caustic Itzel East of the Nobles is very common).
True for now, but later on when the hype dies off, people who didnt Exploited CoF to get masteries will be then able to reach the Mastery Locked Points, when no one else will be around.
Of course it is doable, but Anet should have beeen stick to the soloableness of the Map completion
I agree, once the hype dies down and those that already have what they wanted leave, it will become incredibly difficult to get those hero points. The thing that was so nice with the core maps was that it didn’t matter if your map was dead, you could still get all the hero points. With 9 alts, I fear for the future of my elite specs.

Now that I’ve spent 20 hours grinding out my first elite spec, this makes me wonder quite a bit about something: future content.
Currently, most of the hero points spawn a champion + adds, many of which are not the same pushovers they once were. This is fine, assuming that there are other players who are around to help you. But even by yourself, you’ll encounter champions with waves of adds.
Problem is, most of the HoT maps I play are already nearly a ghost town. Send out the call for help, and you’ll get 1 or 2 people in the space of 10 minutes if you’re lucky. After discovering this fact, I had to resolve to burn through all the specialization points before the maps became too dead to function.
It is also annoying how much of the map specific features are dependent on ill-timed global events. Especially when they lock away hero points behind them. Heck, the only reason why I was able to do an e-spec in 20 hours is because someone else made a guide on how to do it, and I got lucky and had a somewhat coordinated hero-point train running map at one point.
I feel bad for anyone who tries to get these points in a few months.
At the rate the jungle is bleeding players to EotM for the easier (comparative) elite, I feel bad for those trying to get them in a few days.
20 soloable HP in the jungle?
According to dulphy in her guide I cannot post here due to spoilers there are only 6 (total 60 points) with basic mastery. I trust her as she has never steered me wrong in the past therefore getting 20 of them solo seems a tad far-fetched.
The question remains though, why not reward your vets?
(edited by Tommyknocker.6089)
Heh, i play 100% solo and reached dragon’s stand or whatever the last zone is, only needed help on a few hero points, but other then that i soloed 100%, i am a berserker glass cannon warrior.
Yeah right.
Lol want me to use all the new elite skills? i can, do you want me to teleport from way point to way point, i can, do you want me to reach that vista? i can, invite me to a party watch me get there.
Might want to set aside a day for resting, just sayin.
Mastery system. Not the specialization system. That’s what ArenaNet said would be the “kind of progression after level 80 that would take longer than 1 afternoon”.
It was a massive mistake to gate the specializations behind a grind wall. It’s obvious that, after 3 years of a very stale game, people would like to explore the new content with the new skills and traits. If unlocking the specializations didn’t require such a grind, we would have significantly less complaining here.
This X 1000. I am more than happy having to unlock all the new masteries whilst discovering all the jungle has to offer. But even though I have 21000 AP, map completion on all of my 9 characters, I am forced to find others to get my full elite spec.
If they were to reduce the amount to 200 or so for all the trait lines it would have shown you to have actually put in some effort either in Tyria or the new maps, but when they gate it, not only behind group events, but also masteries it becomes a chore.
Why is rewarding your veterans such a bad thing?
Community: We want harder content and end-game!
Devs: Okay! Here you go!
Community: T-T Stop making us work for things, nerf now!
I like the new fights, and I don’t mind that we have to work for masteries either. What I am most upset about is that I currently have a choice between hoping I can find an instance with players in it or grinding EotM for my elite spec. And that is only on one of my characters. If I were to grind EotM for all 9 of my characters I would still not have them all unlocked by the time the next Xpac comes out.
I have spend 3 years thusfar playing this game through the good and the bad. But without another avenue of getting my elite, I may as well just play something else.
Play how you want, just make sure your party agrees with you.
The thing is you don’t HAVE to farm same events over and over, hell it’s not even faster. Just explore the jungle, you don’t have to max mastery in a week. Play the game regularly and leveling while enjoying, don’t let level be your goal.
For the masteries I could not agree more, but, I have map completion on all my characters and yet I have to find enough players to do the HP challenges in HoT for my elite.
Maybe If I could get the players currently in EotM farming there for the masteries as they are easier (and safer) to get in a zerg as opposed to the empty maps in Hot.
I bought HoT to play Hot, not to hang out in an empty map waiting for players to show up and do the challenges, or farm EotM.
How many Hero Points has everyone earned?
in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns
Posted by: Tommyknocker.6089
Only the ones I had from previous maps in Tryia.
I’ll start:
Make the first 2 tears on the glider mastery given after you do the first story mission.
Make elite specs unlocking much easier, I don’t mind a bit of grind, but I do have to work too, and 400 HP is just excessive.
All abilities/mysteries you unlock should give you a bonus only and NOT be mandatory to progress in HoT. Rewards for progressing are good, and feel good. However, if you are forced into grinding in order to “unlock” the jungle it becomes more of a job than a game.
How would you rate the HoT Fun Factor?
in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns
Posted by: Tommyknocker.6089
Well the labyrinth is still going on so there’s that.
I tried the new areas and they are just plain confusing, I tried for 2 hours to find one single hero challenge (need 10 at least) and could not find any. It took me about an hour of grinding to even get to being able to use my glider.
I don’t mind having to work for my elite spec, I would be happy if it required 100000 events in the jungle to complete, but these hero challenges are just a pain in the kitten to even find let alone do.
Thus far I wold give the xpac a solid 4, but if they make elites easier to attain, then I may bump this up to a 6. I am not a fan of vertical maps and thus have yet to even unlock 90% of dry top, nor did I enjoy SAB. The guild halls and such I cannot comment on as I have yet to get into one, however the WvW new maps are just as bloody confusing as the jungle is, but at least we still have ebg.
In the future If you are offering an elite spec in an Xpac, for Christs sake include a disclaimer to the effect that unlocking them will make you want to quit the game entirely.

My first few days of HoT, went as follows:
Tried to unlock pack mastery (with my 20k aps) only to find I had to grind my little kitten off in OLD Tyria to get auto loot. Tried the labyrinth and was informed it was bugged and thus gave no XPs for the tyria line.
Decided to try unlocking as much of my elite as I could, and then noticed I cannot unlock much more that the weapon. More would require me to do the jungle, and thus defeats the purpose of trying to get auto loot unlocked.
Went back to SW with a birthday booster on with my old build I have played for over 2 years now and spent all day farming XP’s.
Maybe in a few days I will tell you what I think of expansion, till then I’ll be
LFG SW 50% 4/4.
Look at the bright side guys, the elementalists and most warriors won’t care at all.
I’m thinking those berserker runes are custom made for a sinister reaper, not sure if we can get/equip them though.
