And in the video it’s not hard to understand what happened from my perspective. I was using a valks amulet, found an opportuntiy to chain CC a ranger into a fire burst (hopefully without a forge rune proc), took it and died.

Our resident 2 gud ele says that I blew an air burst into a protection, but he seems to ignore that it was a sun spirit proc from the THREE hits he got before he got CC’d. He also points out I used ether renewal at 90%. I did, because I was crippled and about to head to sky-hammer because we were losing because of it and had no intention of fighting a ranger. It’s on such a short CD that I don’t see how that’s even considered a mistake by you, it’s rather nit-picky. I “wasted” two dodges while crippled (hoping to wear down the duration of it without looking at it) on a class that uses energy sigils and has perma vigor. Furthermore I was using a kittening valks ammy and didn’t expect to have a lynx and dead storm spirit proc kill me in an instant.’ The ONE proc of storm spirit on death would not have killed me. What killed me was his lynx and the burning applied by his THREE hits in addition to the storm spirit.

Almost all of valor’s criticism has absolutely nothing to do with the video and is just pointing out what he thinks are mistakes without taking them into context. Also, almost all of the mistakes you pointed out are not mistakes. You need to seriously need to chill and quit coming into threads rubbing your kitten without even considering the implications of the video or reasoning behind every simple action in what happens to be a 25 second clip of actual gameplay…

This is an extremely good explanation of what you were thinking in the video and why you did what you did. Thanks! I wish we had more commentary and explanation like this. Maybe then I wouldn’t suck so bad.

edit: ok, it probably wouldn’t help me. But I like hearing it.

(Arenanet should do something against this kind of market manipulation.)

/facepalm

Not this again. The dead horse has been beaten so much there’s nothing left of it!

Speculation does not equal manipulation.

IF (and this is a big IF), you see that there are 35k of an item available for sale. And if you buy 10K of them, causing the price to rise say 30%. and you come and post on the forums about the “sudden rise” in the item on the TP. That is manipulation.

Pump and dump, baby.

Ascended armour will take time and effort

Grind Wars

Sadly Anet you have seriously lost your way.

Ascended actually gives a big boost to stats. Go and use a calculator and you can see how trinkets and weapon make you about 10-20% stronger. Throw armor into the mix and its going to be worse.

The Ascended Weapon is the biggest and worst crafting grind I have ever experienced. It would take you over a month 1.5-2h a day just to gather the wood and ore. I have had a 2 week holiday and gathered 2+ hours every day and I am about half way there.

I don’t think that this sort of grinding was in the manifesto and I am over it. Its made me hate the game in a rather short period of time. I am not going through it again. It’s not Guild Wars anymore. Guild Wars was supposed to be about fun. This is about grind.

10-20% stronger is an overstatement. A sword gives you +3 per min stat and +4 to your max stat compared to an exotic of the same type. The real bonus comes from the increase of damage but even that is very small. It is also hard to determine what the full increase in bonus is do to the damage of the sword and the attributes from other things are not equal.

Think of it this way:
+4 to power is only 4 damage more per hit which by all regards isn’t much
+4 to toughness does not make a difference do to how defence is calculated
+4 to healing power does not make a difference
+4 to precision does not even give you a +1 to crit chance

Sure if you add it up from all ascended items (which by the way large amount of people have already since how easy it is to get 30 laurels) then it matters a bit.

You are forgetting weapon strength and armor increases. Ascended weapons do a minimum of 5% more than Exotics alone. We don’t know the armor stat for ascended gear yet.

damage calculations are here: http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Damage

exotic broadswords (for example) have 995-1100 weapon strength http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Pearl_Broadsword

ascended broadswords (for example) have 1,045 – 1,155 weapon strength

What they have actually said was that Asura technology isn’t there yet (meaning its a lot of codeing involved I assume) but if enough people request it it could happen, so let your voice be heard!

That’s true. I took it as a smarty pants “No” but this is what they said.

Wildstar works as a decent counter example to me because if they do what they say, the gear system will have more of what I don’t like about gw2 than gw2; however, I still prefer it and will probably play it.

Why? because I know what I’m getting into. If I play WS I will never create more than 1 character. I will pick a class / race / etc. and stick with that 1 toon for as long as I play the game.

Here, by the time VP was introduced I already had a number of different characters and was attached to each of them.

I think even the ascended grind is manageable iff I had only 1 character 1 played.

are you really sure? I mean the same reason to create an alt exist in WS as well. In WS you’ll never have BiS… so if you’re not happy with having 2nd best in Gw2, how can you be sure you will be happy in WS? I mean okey, I did say the gear system will have more stuff you dont like then gear system in Gw2 but still prefer it, thats a bit confusing can you perhaps share your thoughts on that one… You think you will be happy with it or simply perhaps find the ways to acquire gear more fun.. what makes something worst a better option?

Of course I’m not sure. It’s speculation. But as a min max kind of guy, I tend to look at systems and decide how to get the most out of it.

For WS, they are up front saying BIS gear is not going to be available, you can’t maximize, the best you can do is come close. Cool, I can work with that. 1 toon only.

That’s not what GW2 did. They said, BIS gear is easy. Cool, I enjoy a variety of game play I’ll create multiple toons to get the most out of the game. Hit 80 and try something else. But then comes VP. Now, I have a new system, where, as a min maxer, the “right” thing to do is focus on 1 toon. But I can’t. I’m already invested in all of them. Also in GW2 BIS is obtainable, it’s just really really grindy.

Sometimes, I think the smartest thing for me to do is to salvage all the gear off my alts and delete them. Pull off the band-aid quick.

Of course, I could be entirely wrong. We won’t know until the game launches and I try it out.

Also, on a related note: talking about the grind, GW2 is designed around the TP. The idea is that you don’t have to do stuff you don’t like, you do the stuff you do like and get what you need from the TP. This is fine in theory, however, ANet rewards boring things.

When I look at champ farming, it’s 4-6g / hour. Really good rewards vs the rest of the game (which is why everyone farms it). But to me, it’s $2 an hour for doing something I don’t enjoy. So I decide I’m not farming for $2. But then, let’s say, I want to build an ascended item.

I’ve been running around WvW, PvP, map completion, or whatever doing what I like, but making < 1g / hour (especially since I now salvage greens / blues / rares). So I have no gold. That’s ok. I made a decision that I wouldn’t farm for $2 / hour. I’d rather buy gems. Support ANet and what not. But then I go to buy games and realize that what I want isn’t worth the cash I’d have to spend. (Note: I’ve spend well over the amount I’d pay for a normal subscription fee, so this isn’t just being cheap.)

So there are weird opportunity cost things going on for me. It’s not worth my time to farm for gold, but it’s not worth the money to buy gold with cash. Maybe I should take a break. I dunno.

Cause Carbine are being upfront about their intentions. Cause BiS equipment in Wowish games is actually easier to obtain than ascended items in GW2. Cause the game design is driven by endgame content.

Anet is big fat poopy heads for failing to be different enough, yet Carbine can outright say they’re re-making vanilla WoW and that makes them better.

That’s ‘government out of my medicare’ levels of cognitive dissonance there, but then again this thread pretty much went full of it as soon as Lanfear and Indigo left.

Just for the record. I think Wildstar is a bad example and not because I don’t like what I see there (WoW plus aliens and the the humor.. I like humor but don’t think it works very well in an MMO.. It does work in the trailers!) but because it’s not released yet. Back in the day people would use Anet to show as a good example and if it was to point towards GW1 that was fair but it was also to point towards the then not yet existing GW2.

You have no idea what Carbine will do even if you like what you are seeing now so I would suggest taking another example

That all is definitely ArenaNet’s fault.

If players are running a champ train twelve hours a day, it’s ArenaNet’s fault. If they’re farming Orr, ArenaNet’s fault. Players go where the game tells them to go, that’s simply the nature of any game. If having fun in the game requires playing against the game, that is definitely ArenaNet’s fault.

Yup, i really love how it eventually turns “but its player’s fault”

No it isnt, unless your premise is that somehow ANet doesnt have control over their game.

But its all water under the bridge now, they implemented gear treadmill, very bad gear treadmill which most other games do much much better, and decided to follow WoW and its clones with game that want even designed for it. It certanly isnt what they advertised back at launch.

Yes, if you give freedom to players you loose control of it yourself. The game was designed so that anyone can play the game anyway they wish. At launch absolutely everything in game (except for the dungeon skins) could be acquired playing anywhere in the game. Free to play anywhere in the game also means you’re free to farm orr non stop 24/7.

A lot of the issues people have with Gw2 come because of too much freedom. Seems player have trouble enjoying themselves without being forced in a particular play style they are just incapable of choosing it for themselves.

Except that the reward system is hopelessly screwed up. It’s not any more or less challenging to kill a trash mob alone than it is to kill champions in a champion farm, but champion farming gives a much higher reward. It’s like ANet is paying us to do stuff we don’t otherwise want to do.

I think that champion rewards need to be balanced with the rest of the content. Sure there should be an upside to doing it, but there shouldn’t be such an upside that every feels like they have to champion farm.

@draco

exploration, jumping puzzles and vistas might be inconsequential nonsense to you, its definitely not content that doesnt exist. Like I said, if you decided to skip content you’re entirely free to do so but if you’re accusing Anet of not creating not much content because you skipped most of it then you’re not being honest.

Normally I agree with almost everything you say. However, (there’s always a however in these posts isn’t there?). In this case I want to point out that whenever I complain about ascended gear and the grind someone invariably posts that it’s not necessary to play the game, I don’t have to do it, and I can ignore it.

If ignoring content you don’t like is fine for grindy stuff, it should also be acceptable for ridiculously repetitive stuff. I’m not a game designer and I know building games is difficult but so many of the dynamic events / hearts are substantially carbon copies of one another.

I know that for most games this is true. The same game loop repeats over and over gain, but a) most games ask for <40 hours of my time, not thousands, and b) they hide the repetition a little better.

Hmm hardened leather section spiked a lot more than I anticipated from this speculation… 3x to be precise. Even though it is not used much in armor crafting compared to cloth. Wish I would have invested more in those, although I suspect when the patch actually hits it won’t increase as much as the others. Wool and linen scraps and thin leather sections are getting a nice increase, so I’m glad I packed all my mules full of those. I’m thinking those will have the largest percent increase come patch day.

Also, ectos/crystalline dust will probably spike a lot (at least 1.5x imo) with patch, making gossamer bolt promotion less worthwhile.

Assuming, of course, that armor follows the same model as weapons. They may not be crafted at all. Then we’ll see a crash.

“If we chose fun as our main metric for tracking success, can we flip the core paradigm and make design decisions based on what we’d like to play as game players? Can we focus our time on making meaningful and impactful content, rather than filler content meant to draw out the experience? Can we make something so much fun you might want to play it multiple times because it’s fun, rather than making you do it because the game says you have to? It’s how we played games while growing up. I can’t tell you how many times I played Quest for Glory; the game didn’t give me 25 daily quests I needed to log in and do—I played it multiple times because it was fun!”

the problem is the players, not the developers.
the players left the game because there was not enough grind.

Constructive Discussion about Conditions

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Conditions are in the interesting place of being OP in PvP and WvW while being underpowered in PvE due to stacking limits. As anyone who use to run a warrior knows this is a very difficult problem to solve.

There are also technical limitations (I believe the maximum number of stacks is a bandwidth issue). Anyway, increasing the stack limit wouldn’t matter much, as Teq will always have max stacks even if you double the cap.

As for the “bleeding weapon rack” that can be rationalized pretty easily. Bleeding is just a bad name. Call it 1000 cuts and you can see how an insect swarm could cause DOT to a weapon rack. Poison could be corrosive, burning should obviously affect a weapon rack, confusion shouldn’t do anything (unless you have a sentient weapon rack that fights back)

However, rumor has it that the sigil will be fixed in the October 15th path. So i would not design a build around it.

To me, this is the problem inherent in PvE content. That’s why whenever people ask for a challenge I direct them to check out PvP.

I think Teq was perfect content to add to the game. I have never completed it, I’ve only tried twice. But I know it can be done.

Yeah, I think he also said that you would apply the skins using transmutation stones. Let’s just say I’m not optimistic about this becoming a viable end game strategy. They always introduce some microtransaction to make what I enjoy less acceptable.

Maybe, maybe not. He did say “pay transmutation stones” to get another copy… but we paid gold in GW1 to obtain additional copies of a hat or costume as well.

I guess it would depend on how many stones/crystals it would cost. Just 1 like a normal transmute? I’m fine with that, I have bunches of the things from normal everyday playing (probably because I save most of my transmuting til the tail end of my leveling). Beyond that, you can still shift gold to gems to get them from the store, for no out of pocket cost.

I mean we’re one year in, can we say there is any content that requires exotic gear?

I had sometime tell me that in WvW I should increase my armor above X because of ascended weapons. This X would require 100% defensive setup. Now I don’t think it’s necessary, but perceptions are already out there that ascended weapons is changing things.

The big problem in WvW is “rallybotting”

Because of the rally on defeat mechanism, if you are undergeared or leveled, you are actually a big negative to your team. When you die you will allow a bunch of the enemy players to rally.

Already on the high tier servers guild groups are incredibly hostile to PUGs following them. Once gear becomes undeniably an advantage (close to that now), the full WoW “gearscore” mentality will come to WvW.

This supports my point to some degree (the perception is that stronger weapons change the game in WvW). However, I also agree with Galen.

I understand this argument and if I were a rally bot I’d agree that I need more toughness. However, with a significant lower toughness score, I am still usually one of the last people alive. I usually only die when we’re getting wiped anyway. (That is, when the command goes up to rally at the waypoint, I’m still alive and running around)

This is not because of any skill on my part, but because I am a coward. And perhaps a slightly better than average understand of how long I can stay in a firezone.

[feature] unlock skins & stats, swap at will

I think this would work great, but only if you had a wardrobe, like the PvP one. That way people could spend ages earning all of the different skins, some easy to get some hard.

It doesn’t work if you’re getting a one time use dohicky.

I think part of the reason that we had to go VP so fast, is that the game launched without the infrastructure to support HP.

90% of everything. Specifically, without duplicating

1. Active combat
2. WvW
3. World Building
4. Guilds, I like that I can be part of multiple guilds, even if some of them are mainly contact lists.

Or they could add in friendly fire. Still have a trolling issue, but it would sure stop the zerg ball.

I’m not sure what you think isn’t changing. They’re doing exactly what I thought they’d do.

First they come out with ascended rings and stuff that only fractal runners could get. Then they made them so you could get them with dailies and such. Anyone who cared about that stuff, should have had it by now, surely. Rings and amulets are pretty easy to get.

Which brings us now to weapons. Sure they’re hard to get. They’re like rings when they first came out. It’s like some people spent a couple of grand on a VCR and a few years later everyone could afford them.

So Anet comes out with these weapons and makes them hard to get. Only the people who REALLY want them really care. But eventually, if they do come out with something else, they’ll make these much easier to get. It’s always going to be the older tier that’s easier to get.

The only trick is to make it so you can always do the content with the older tier (which you can).

As long as that remains, I think they’re handling it okay.

To be sure, I’d personally prefer a game with only cosmetic progression, but that ship has sailed. To be precise it sailed last November.

I have enough ascended rings at the moment for my next three or four 80s. I get earrings from doing guild missions. This stuff really isn’t that hard to get.

But the weapons are. As long as I don’t need them…I don’t care…and why should I? So I can have a BIS weapon? So I can save two minutes or a 12 minute dungeon run?

It’s very much like people who have to buy the absolutely top of the line computer. They pay a lot more and six months later it’s 30% cheaper.

I can wait the six months.

OK. I thought they’d make old ascended gear as easy to get as the old exotics. That hasn’t happened and I don’t think it ever will. They will keep BIS gear as a means to get players to do things they would not have otherwise done.

See I don’t think so. I think it’s still on a moderate progression path…and they intend to stay that way..that is the gear progression is going to be relatively minor stat-wise compared to other games. You won’t need the gear to run dungeons.

That’s my prediction anyway.

Really? Its still the same thing though. If they add another gear after Ascended, say, with another ‘minor’ stat boost of 10%, then another tier after that…..its still vertical and will still divide players as the stat difference from exotic to whatever the current tier may be gets larger and larger. Just because they’re doing it in smaller increments doesn’t mean it’s not there or gets to be called something else.
Its like your power company throwing a power rate increases at you – suddenly hike the bill by $200 in one shot or by increasing the bill by $10 over time so they can claim its better than the other company who does it in one shot.

Unless the older stuff becomes so easy to get that everyone has it…which is doable.

Everyone sees vertical progression and they think full on gear treadmill…cause that’s how everyone else has done it.

If you guys can’t see the difference between this and other MMOs, I’m not really sure what else I can say about it.

This is what I originally thought ANet was going to do. Let grinders get the gear early and then open up more paths for the rest of us. But this isn’t what they’ve done.

Instead, they’ve used Ascended gear as a carrot to get people to do stuff they don’t otherwise want to do. You can see all ascended gear since rings as an effort to spread people throughout the world (when they obviously don’t want to).

First dailies were suppose to spread people around the world, but people just completed them other ways or hung out in the appropriate 1-15 zones for a quick fix. The mid level zones were desolate. Now with the ore and wood requirements you have to go into the mid level zones (or someone does).

I don’t think this is going to change. If anything armor will reinforce this.

Nice opinion piece…which is pretty much just that. A very long opinion piece, but you blow it at the end.

You say this could be avoided,. but you don’t really know that. It’s pure conjecture. I’m not sure you’d said anything here that hasn’t been said in countless threads.

I agree. ProxyDamage, you should never mix opinions with conjecture. How could you?

Ridiculous.

Why does RNG even exist?

TooBz.3065

Your WoW example is flawed since it just adjusts the drop table by a very small amount each kill for whatever loot that monster is supposed to drop. It doesn’t “fix” RNG, it just adjusts the probability a tiny bit each kill.

It may not fix RNG, but it fixes the game.
