First, apologies if this is a duplicate thread, but I’ve noticed many people’s miniatures have an abnormally fast idle state, with actions that are 2-3x faster than normal (such as the mini Risen Hylek), and some sounds are sped up as well (eg. the mini Princess Doll).

I was wondering if Anet was aware of this and what the possible causes of it were.

Or it could be mere speculation and nothing at all. Think of the coloured tempered spinal blades about a year ago that were hinted at prior to a patch. Much speculation ensued, including the popular theory that the ability to dye them could only come from using a material (grapes) to use for the colouring of the blades. Grape farmers abounded for the next week after talk of this began, and the price of grapes hit an all-time high.

With speculation comes risk, it’s the nature of the beast. GW2 isn’t the stock market and I think a lot of people forget this.

The Price for Exclusivity

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Valandil Dragonhart.2371

Valandil Dragonhart.2371

I just wanted to keep with the thread title here. I am one of the last people to visit the gem store for items, and I guarantee you my main elementalist is about as exclusive as one can get.

Exclusivity isn’t only bound to availability of items, but also how hard someone is willing to work to earn these items outside of the gem store.

Personally, I knew the black wings were going to be overhyped when there was first mention of them. They’re one of the most bold backpieces around and I’m not really a fan of them. The looks aren’t very clean and they don’t suit a lot of characters. That being said, I’d have gems ready to spend if they brought out some nice shiny white ones.

There’s millions of permutations of how to customise a character in this game. Compared to its predecessor it is literally light years ahead. Exclusivity doesn’t have to be limited to what you can obtain in the gem store; if you want to look good and you think your toon looks good in something then get it. But please don’t be misled into getting something that everyone else has just because there was a one-day sale and everyone ‘will look heaps cooler’ with these wings.

To sum up, everyone who plays this game has their own taste and a different opinion on what they think looks good. There’s costumes/outfits to wear (some of which actually look good), others like myself will make the most of the skins they unlock through normal game progress and evolution. Everything (skins) you use and wear is account-bound, so there’s got to be something for just about everyone. Personally I leave the gem store alone unless there’s something that I think will suit the theme of one of my toons.

I don’t think you have anything to complain about, unless like most of us Oceanic players, you get the patch the next day at the VERY early hours of the morning. Usual patch times here are averaging about 4am local time. Consider the fact that most people I’ve played with in the OCX regions only play in the afternoon/evening, that puts us a good 12 hours behind the rest of the playing community. In other words, anything new that was hot for the first few hours (like an item that could be rewarded to you and then sold at a massive price) after the patch dropped, has basically gone cold already by the time the patch updates for the majority of Oceanics.

As usual the US gets the best of it, Euro’s get the next best and the rest of the world, well… I don’t think it’s worth mentioning. Anet seems to forget about them too easily anyway.

It’s no bug. Giant Eyes have been confirmed that they are not a drop.

They’re only looted (extremely rarely) from Heavy Bags.

I do see where you’re coming from though, due to the incredible rarity of these items and what they can craft, they should have a slightly higher chance to drop from mobs/kills as opposed to ridiculous RNG.

Tequatl crashes

in Bugs: Game, Forum, Website

Posted by: Valandil Dragonhart.2371

Valandil Dragonhart.2371

I’m sure there’s probably more than a few topics out there about this, but this is my experience with it.

I have ‘been blessed’ with Teq maps because up until quite recently, I never crashed randomly and for seemingly no good reason. Now however, it’s a very different story. I’ve done Teq 4 times this week and 100% of the time I’ve crashed during the event. To me this brings into question, “why now, and not before?”.

I changed my system config from an AMD machine to a kitten Intel rig which is more than capable of doing everything anyone else with a similar rig would do. Everything else, however, has stayed the same; character models, quantities, texture levels, shading, etc. nothing has changed in the setup of how I ran GW2 on my old AMD system to how I run it on this new Intel system.

I find the most common times this event crashes is when I’m in the zerg and finishing a burn phase. Actually last night the same happened with the Karka Queen event, so it’s not an isolated incident limited to one event. The point is that I never had this kind of crash rate with the old system (which I can’t go back to) that I had running on these settings with this new one.

I can’t fathom why I’m crashing now, though. All was good with this system up until very recently (this week), and I’ve been running these events almost daily since I built this system over 2 months ago.

It’s not impossible. You either need to move off the #3 skill launch pad, so you can manually target the #3 skill. Or you use a combination of #1 skill and #2 skill, cancelling the #2 at the right moment. (Or you can make sure you’re coming last, to maximise your chances of getting the #10 skill and then skip the bad parts.) Doing either of these does take a bit of practice, though, and having to use them pretty much destroys your chances of winning. But it is possible to finish.

I tried everything, every trick you just mentioned there… I had to get real crafty to try to make my way over to the landing zone, but ultimately it’s the lag that gets you in the end no matter what you try, and it’s not something you can pre-empt either, there’s no ‘tell’ for when a lag spike is gonna hit you.

As if the game mechanics weren’t bad enough when rapidly transporting a toon from one part of a map to the other, it seems the dev’s didn’t factor in the poor suckers with high pings.

I created a thread not so long ago (a month or a bit more) and left it in the Bug forum, and I can’t find it in my post history. Anyway I posted about how ridiculous the lag was for Sanctum Sprint for around checkpoint 5. All the aerial moves/jumps are at the mercy of such high lag that it’s unplayable.

It’s been like this for the past few months now, and while I could finish it (once upon a time), now it’s in the hands of lag as to whether or not I finish it. I know most people won’t have an issue getting from one part of the activity to the other, but for people with high pings (Oceanics in particular), it’s not a fun experience. It’s incredibly frustrating that lag should destroy what was once a fun activity that most people could enjoy.

Valandil Dragonhart.2371

I was just doing some story stuff with an alt, and I realised that I wasn’t getting any bloodlust stacks from my weapons. Is this intended, and if so why?

I never really took much notice of this before, but now the toon I’m playing on can make use of these stacks to much bigger effect than I did on my earlier toons because I know how to use them better.

It doesn’t seem right that there’s no stacks, so I wanted to know if the mechanic was either disabled or broken in story instances. As a sidenote, I thought it was bad enough that we don’t get any loot from corpses – I just mowed down fields of Orrians and no loot from any of them. I know it’s supposed to be that we get the loot at the end of the instance as part of the reward, but for Orr it doesn’t seem right.

Why is silk going up in price?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Valandil Dragonhart.2371

Valandil Dragonhart.2371

Although every time I make stacks of Bolts of Silk, I notice that it needs 3 whereas the other parts require only 2 per piece. Is their a particular reason it’s special? I dunno.

They did this with soft wood as well. At the start there were surplus quantities of this ‘useless’ material, until suddenly ascended tier rolls around and guess what, it becomes useful again. That said, there’s no reason to make the quantity of these materials higher than others to fabricate into their final state (scraps to bolts, logs to planks, etc.)

The surplus of the materials when they were considered useless wouldn’t take even a month to clear out once ascended crafting was introduced. But yet, the recipes for condensing these items still requires a heavy ‘surplus’ cost (4 logs instead of 3, 3 scraps instead of 2, etc.). I say heavy because when you take into account how many of each item you need, it really adds up.

Why they did this and never reverted the changes after the surplus had diminished I’ll never know. To me it just beggars belief.

Best looking Axe in-game

Valandil Dragonhart.2371

I’ve always been an admirer of the Chaos Axe myself, along with the Stygian Axe and the Primordus Axe (close resemblance to the Destroyer Axe of GW1).

The Chaos Axe is (unfortunately) bought, either with gems —> gold —> TP, or by getting enough BL tickets. The Stygian Axe is a freebie skin from the Hall of Monuments, provided you acquired 28 HoM points in GW1. The Primordus Axe is crafted (T6 mats, Destroyer lodes).

Basically anything that is out-of-the-ordinary in appearance and really stands out in effect is what gets my vote. I know others aren’t that particular with their tastes and prefer their’s a bit more hum-drum. Skins are very subjective, but in a game all about skins, why not go for something ‘good’?

Although the Cantha one might be a bit problematic if you can’t get someone to taxi you into the one side of that mission (forget the name).

The name of that mission is Vizunah Square. Easily done with heroes while the other side is NPC henchmen.

The part about grind is correct. The worst part is there are fewer people to help out in that game now, and a lonely grind is a difficult one. Trust me when I say it takes a lot of perseverence (even WITH friends to help out) to get 50/50 HoM points.

As only 30 points are needed to acquire the bonus stuff for GW2, the rest being titles, I probably wouldn’t bother going beyond 30 if it were me. I’d seriously question the time investment as to being worthwhile enough to do those remaining points. Back when GW2 was in Alpha/closed Beta stages, 50/50 was a bragging rights thing. Now it carries little more relevance than being attributive to some more Achievement Points in GW2. It’s a very subjective thing as to whether completion of those 50pts is worth it.

The precedent has been set already with another miniature. IMO you can’t have certain groups of people (regardless of function or importance) get certain vanity items in a game like miniatures, while leaving others out in the cold (no one told Gaile this. ). By nature it’s undue bias, segregation to some extent and is not necessary.

I’ll just leave this here.

I got 8 wins so far… I’ve no idea how many losses, I stopped counting.

The only reason I know I got 8 wins is every time I somehow fluke a win it tells me in the achieve popup.

The one thing stopping people from pursuing more wins is there’s no per-match reward for winning, or a consolation for losing. It’s AP-based and you’re supposed to be chasing those AP’s… and that’s part of the reason people think so little of it.

Once, I used to be fully into the LS. But the more that Anet stepped away from what was being needed in the game (ie. the things people were asking for more and more and being ignored), and putting their own thing in instead, with lashings of gem store items, the more disinterested I became and separated myself from it.

The only thing I do with LS now is just follow it through and wait for the next chapter. I could not care less about the achievements they throw in with them, just to keep me playing the game, or the extra armour skins and achieves associated with them, again, just to keep me playing the game, and the new areas which fast become tedious farms which are evil necessities to progress through on certain achievements, once again, to keep me playing the game.

It’s because they want to keep people (long-timers especially) playing the game and refusal to add anything more significant into the game until the expansion comes out, that I rebel against their mode of thinking. It’s a waste of time for me being in there (Dry Top / Silverwastes) after getting the initial content achieves (find the llamas, gold coin hunt, etc.) and keeping in just for the sake of farming what they want us to farm which is incredibly boring and tedious.

This is the reason why I stay away from more involved LS stuff and do what I want to do in the game, not what they would have us do to get more of it complete. It’s all about choice and I choose not to succumb to their mode of play and sacrifice a few AP instead.

The Walk of Shame

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Valandil Dragonhart.2371

Valandil Dragonhart.2371

I’m going to preface this by putting it in the context of the Golem Mk II event.

If someone hasn’t done it before, they should have the balls to ask and not feel ashamed about not knowing the fight. I’m more than happy to explain how it goes down, but only to those who will ask first.

Within the first 30 seconds of the event, all I see on the minimap is a platform full of skulls and cross-bones. The platform is essentially a graveyard. I find a lot of these people will not resurrect themselves at the nearby waypoint. Instead they’ll expect others (I see it happen daily) to resurrect them and put their own lives at risk. It’s dangerous and selfish.

If you want to get event credit then participate in the event like all the others. You won’t get it by lying dead on a platform. You’ll get noticed more by staying where you are and making a mockery of yourself asking to be resurrected, than by quietly finding the nearest waypoint and rejoining the fight. People are more fixated on the boss than someone who just died coming back into the fight.

Regarding the possible solutions to this problem, auto-waypointing may be a way to separate the trolls and auto-attackers/afk’ers from the real participants. You’ll see a heap of them stacked at the waypoint if they’re deliberately afk. ‘Kicking’ them off the platform (ie. at the base of the stairs perhaps, outside the event area) upon death may also be a way to look at this. That way others aren’t putting their lives at risk to resurrect them. The dead might find more impetus to actually use the waypoint than blissfully ignoring the dangers others face to get them back into the fight.

Other events have different mechanics but the bottom line here essentially the same. If you’re downed and able to be brought back into the fight in time (ie. a few seconds) that’s all well and good. If you’re dead it’s always better to waypoint than put others at risk. You’re more than likely not going to miss out on getting event credit as long as you do your share of damage and don’t afk the event.

PvE vs PvP balancing

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Valandil Dragonhart.2371

I’m still wondering why GW2 didn’t follow GW1’s lead of specially segregating PvE skills against PvP for these very reasons. I don’t know how many skills were affected in GW1, but I can confidently guess around 50% or more. Activation times were longer in PvP, CD’s were longer, effects were watered down, etc. Aftercast delays were a big thing especially if you had a tendency to lag in PvP.

The mechanics in this game are comprehensively different and more complex with regard to skills and effects. That said, I’m confident there’s nothing that can’t be done with a little finessing and fine tuning of skills, to bring back that segregation that GW1 had.

This is for chinese client which our clients were merged with so when china gets an event we get it too.

I find it rather ironic that we celebrate some of the Asian (in this case Chinese) culture in the area once called The Great Collapse, and even prior to that, The Canthan District (obliterated prior to launch).

At one point during development, this area was originally a completed Canthan district and included a blend of Asian architectures. However, this mix of styles received negative feedback from China and Korea, since those gaming markets traditionally prefer a uniform design. Thanks for the replies.

Nick, I downloaded Latencymon and apparently all good – “Your system appears to be suitable for handling real-time audio and other tasks without dropouts”. What worried me a bit was the hard pagefault count over 5mins was up to 100. I’ve no idea what is considered normal here so I just left it alone.

Regarding the bios version, I’m on stock bios settings which is ver. 84.04.2F.00.81 so I’m not sure which version I’m supposed to be downloading from the link that you put up. Thanks much for those btw.

krixis, it’s a new system and I only got what I figured would be appropriate for the hardware, which is a Corsair HX750i PSU, which is full modular so I kinda have to connect the right power cables for it to work. I only have one of these cards so it’s not like I’m running an SLi setup, or I would have reconsidered my PSU options.

Going down the list: (I’m a PC tech so this is all basic) yes, yes/yes, old GPU drivers were ATI so yes obviously I had to uninstall them before getting these ones in, ‘max power’ check, I used to not run Vsync in GW2, and as I said in the OP I’m not having issues with the game with this twitching thing, but like I said mp4’s, avi’s, etc. Interesting point with 60fps dropping to 30, cos that’s exactly what mine does in the Heaven benchmark prog. Anything that passes close by on a pan the FPS auto dips to 30 instead of 60. Yes, Vsync enabled.

It’s an Intel i7-4790K (4GHz) on turbo mode (10% OC = 4.4GHz), being run with Corsair H80i water cooling and Noctua PWM fans throughout (except the 200mm case fans). I’ve created a positive pressure environment in the Zalman GS1200 case and there’s a lot of space to fill in there. FYI, 1 base fan (120mm), 1 side case fan (200mm), 1 top case fan (200mm), 2 x front case fans (92mm) all acting as air intakes. The exhaust fans are 2 × 120mm NF-F12 Noctua fans push-pull config’d, cooling the CPU. All put together, the system barely puts out 35dBA.

Hope that answers your questions.

DISCLAIMER: This topic isn’t strictly GW2 related.

I’ve seen this issue come up in a lot of FPS (first person shooter) games, but so far not in this game. I have a new Gigabyte G1 Gaming GTX970 and while I don’t get this jitter in-game as such (yet), I am getting it in some mp4’s, wmv’s and avi files that I’ve downloaded from TV shows like Mythbusters or something similar.

I’ve tried sorting this out at different resolutions, different screen sizes, etc. but so far no fix. The only real search for this issue on any search engine is almost 100% game-related. I can’t find much info on this asides what I’ve mentioned above, so really this is a call for your experiences with the GTX970 card. If you have one can you let us know what your frames are like and if you have the same jitter/twitch that inevitably most/all GTX970 card owners seem to face.

I find mining nodes of ANY sort will pop up briefly on the minimap and then just as quickly disappear.

I see these phantom nodes all over the place while taking some alts through the game and in many different areas.

This is something that should have been fixed not long after it was reported, but it’s still here now.

Tarrek, you probably fall into the vast majority of unluckiness that’s experienced throughout this game.

My personal stats:

The Legend (forge) — 14th of April 2014 (approx 4.5k hrs clocked)
Leaf of Kudzu (champ bag) — 4th of December 2014.

Playing since headstart, and all Beta events before that.

In-game time: 7,210 hours.

I farmed them all in Silverwastes in 6 weeks.
I created a blog where I posted all the data:

Enjoy!

Thanks for reinforcing my decision to not farm the Silverwastes.

Hey Gaile, How can we get some ANET representation at PAX Australia in October! Would love to see the team down here!

I’m on board!!!

Now to convince my boss that I need to go.

Won’t happen.

They couldn’t even organise a stall or basically ANY kind of representation for GW2 back pre-launch in 2012 at local games festivals like Supanova, but guess which other long-standing MMO was there representing all it’s wares?

We’re not good enough for representation from Anet. I don’t say this lightly, but every bit of support I threw in for my appreciation of Anet for the great work they did with GW1 has been cast asunder by the disturbing lack of interest with GW2. The 8:30am PST official unveiling of Heart of Thorns just reaffirms that belief, as locally it’s 3:30am, the next day. Again, only the local die-hards and insomniacs will be in livestream attendance.

I can’t change where I live, and there’s no way I can afford a ticket and a 14 hour flight from here to there. Have some consideration.

And if they unveiled at a time convenient for you, other people would be likewise inconvenienced. It wasn’t a slight. Seriously.

Let’s take a more serious (as you put it) look at conventions then. Anet won’t show up in Australia. It’s too far away, we don’t have a big enough fan base, etc. etc. the excuses go on. I’d be delighted if they did and I’ll be proven wrong, but they just won’t. Refer to my first post about why, lest I reiterate.

The problem with playing this game and living in Australia is Anet NEVER do stuff that is agreeable to OCX players in their time zones, period. You wanna see it happen? Watch it on a YT feed, but it won’t be live. Anyone else in the world would shout out the same way if they were hardly-done-by like we are. I don’t think anyone can fully appreciate the gravity of it unless you live here.

GW2 is not GW1.

You want only 20 levels, play GW1 instead. For my experiences in this game, good and bad taken into account, I think I’d rather have GW1 but with GW2’s graphics.

Why don't you like SPvP

I learned early on in the original Guild Wars that if you’re going to succeed in PvP you need to not only have superior co-ordination and knowing who you’re fighting against and what they’re doing, but you also need the proper connection and lag cannot be a factor.

I found this out the hard way while trying to battle ~400ms ping. Subsequently if you’re not from the US (or Europe near a Euro server) then if you’re trying to succeed in PvP it’s more luck than skill if the lag doesn’t get you. Even switching weapon sets took way longer than I’d imagined it would, and people with better pings would get the better of you before you knew it.

What was worse was the constant elitism and toxicity within the PvP, and how self-destructive and discouraging the game mode was to anyone who was new at it and wanted to learn. Sure there were guilds out there who would teach, but even if you somehow get good, you can’t overcome the lag if you’re living in an area prone to it.

Now come GW2 and it’s sPvP – I’ve played this game since launch and this is one mode I flatly refuse to enter. Once bitten, twice shy. I find it would be counter-productive to even entertain the idea of playing in a mode that I had no hope of winning in. Not only do I not know the mechanics of the game mode, but I’m still battling the lag. In a game where reflexes and knowing who you’re up against are just as important, it’s a no-win situation for someone like me to even begin.

I occasionally play WvW, and even outside of the blobs I still get horrendous amounts of lag. I have to consider, that if I get such lag in one mode (as I do in PvE, but other players aren’t trying to kill me), another PvP mode will be just as bad. Best not to swim against the tide.
