Where is promised challenging HOT content?

Scaling.

Want to make me happy, and those I play with?

Make your challenging content scale from 1-5 people.

I often have 1-2 friends / family online, and I don’t want / need to drag in strangers. I want to play with people I know, trust, and are often in the same room.

For that matter, scale fractals and existing dungeons too.

Let me play how I want with who I want.

+2!

I, too, expected a proper challenge scaling when I started playing. Sadly it turned out a minor thing that all it was about was raising mobs levels in events, or adding vets and champions. Of course I don’t expect a complex event scaling system, but in the long run it would increase the game’s quality.

Where is promised challenging HOT content?

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Valento.9852

Simply put: we haven’t announced it yet – when we’re ready to show everything about our plans for challenging content for HoT, we’ll announce it.

Though it isn’t the “challenging content” feature discussed in our announcement – I will add we want our open world content experience to be more challenging as well just in general. Though the AI was better in our CBT experience – we think we still have a lot of work to do to get our creatures and encounters even at the start of Verdant Brink up to where we want them to be. Our game has great combat, our creatures and encounters should challenge and require you to use that combat system.

More info “when it’s ready”.

Oh Colin! That THAT is the frigging thing I want to see! Your combat system is awesome but it needs to match up the challenge! Do not fail us. >.<

Also, the learning curve when mastering challenges is what weaves unforgettable experiences when contents with such challenges are beaten. I’m talking about a full raid screaming the boss is down! Old MMOs achieved this partially with gear treadmills, but it’s completely possible to re-create such huge experience with GW2 combat system.

Raids?

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: Valento.9852

Valento.9852

Yeah, open world raids are a joke, not even close in difficulty as a real raid. Zergfest flash parties aren’t raids, the sooner people realize that the better. Something being visually epic is a kittenload different from epically challenging, and Tequatl/TT aren’t challenging and just requires a blob, and enough Ice Bows (for now, it’ll be nerfed and you will waste more time smashing buttons very soon).

I just don’t get why people hate instanced raids. If they don’t like instanced coordinated content that’s actually hard, simply don’t do it. I am 100% not everybody likes open world piñata zergfests like Tequatl and Triple Trouble, and yet, nobody complains about them.

New Hylek Extremely Cartoony

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: Valento.9852

Valento.9852

Hylek are based and modeled after real life frogs. These frogs aren’t cartoony at all. The problem here is a lack of biological information, not a graphic style. One of the new races is modeled after tree frogs and the other is modeled after bull frogs. Both are well done from that perspective.

Tree frogs look more gangly than other frogs and have a bigger head.

Both, don’t you think? Maybe if they added more details on the 3D models (warts?) and maybe more detailed textures to evoke more realism.

Funny fact: currently you need 254k exp to level up, but in Heart of Maguuma you need roughly 1kk exp to level up glider I to glider II.

Tbh I don’t mind. At least it will keep me busy, and I don’t like to beat everything and quickly reach the rinse ’n repeat train. (Y)

BETA: My list of PROs and FIXes

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: Valento.9852

Valento.9852

About glider activating too soon after jumping, I think it’s because they haven’t optimized client/server sync. It should be somewhat easy for them to track the “duration” of a jump, i.e. how much time you’re “in air”, and use that average duration as a trigger for activating it, so it doesn’t constantly lock your skillbar and enable the “Deploy Glider” action.

This beta was better than the first, we had the opportunity to glimpse into what Heart of Maguuma may be about, and I wish the very first beta were like this one. The way day/night experience rolls out is sure a great framework for a map-wide mechanics/meta-event, but could use more tweaking not to feel so confusing. During the night I didn’t quite understand what was going on, there were escorts and I was overwhelmed in almost all of them, so I take all “defend” events in night time will require at least two-three people playing together.

I got extremely intrigued and interested about Vine Salvage Pit adventure, and I guess GW2 has found a sweet potential to grow them into something spectacular. It’s like Guild Puzzles and Dynamic Events had a baby, and the experiment was successful! I can’t stress enough how much potential I see there. Great job.

Opening more of Verdant Brink showed how much the map is fluid, and you feel like it’s moving. The difficulty of mordrem was a little better, but I’m afraid zergs may overrun them. Depending on how rewarding the map will be, and how much important “spreading” the zerg will be, we could see faceroll zergs re-thinking coordination and hopefully naturally create balanced encounters where going blind-zerker will reward much less, after all zerkers claim they’re the best gear reward-wise. Rewards should be earned for beating content as designed to prevent faceroll experiences.

I do wish they would come out and announce a few new dungeons for HoT, but I really don’t want them to do anything like raise the level cap or add mounts.

Also, you use too many hashtags and probably need to rethink what a “white knight” is.

There’s just one hashtag! :0

We needed another thread complaining about the perceived size of HoT and the lack of updates until HoT releases?

Those aren’t perceived, those are reality.

I was looking at your signature, too. Which has two more hashtags.

And he/she isn’t talking about you perceiving what the updates for FF are going to be, he’s talking about you thinking HoT won’t have a lot of content. =P

I replied about HoT. Is the xpac going to be 80% open world?

Then maybe I missed a HoT announcement? Can you link me to where they announced the size of the expansion and the breakdown of what and how much of what it will include? Because if you’re saying it’s a reality not a perception, but you don’t have a real source to base that on, then it’s still just perception/assumption.

Colin clearly stated, during HoT very first presentation, that what they were showing is what HoT’s about to avoid people from guessing that more stuff would be released. So yeah, that presentation covered EVERYTHING HoT will have.

But it doesn’t cover everything HoT will have in detail. Take the comment, challenging group content.

From my point of view only one thing actually determines the amount of content in an expansion…how long you play it. Everything else is crap.

And we won’t know how long people will play it for, until…I don’t know…we’ve played it.

So many things are misleading on paper. But people never learn.

I’ll give you that, but still they aren’t releasing anything to the live game…

…except for the Camera Changes, Trait changes (which will be pre-expansion, based on what I’ve heard), Stability Rebalance…

They’re QoL changes and not content, but they’re still additions to the live game.

Not to mention the story episodes that they were releasing up until the end of LW season 2 and all the other various changes/additions over the past year.

They haven’t added dungeons, though, which is all I can assume OP is really talking about while for some reason avoiding saying it. =s I really do hope they add more, though. I wouldn’t mind a new dungeon with every new map or every other new map or something.

Instead of just adding new Dungeons, I really hope the fix the “wear zerker, stack in a corner, dpsrace the mobs, rinse, repeat” Dungeon Meta that’s going on right now. There’s no strategy or play to it—it’s just another way to farm. If I wanted to complete dungeon content by blindly going through my skill rotation, I’d still be playing WoW.

I guess I want “challenging” to be the key word in the promised “Challenging Group Content” in the expansion.

Well, it seems they hired an AI Consultant some time ago, maybe they don’t fool us with “challenging”? Maybe…

People are mindlessly hypnotized by “raised level cap” and “mounts”; way to throw the focus away. I’m talking about how big it is for that playerbase, comparing to how big HoT is for OUR playerbase, while they’re not even spending resources in live game.

Still Hyped for HoT?

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: Valento.9852

Valento.9852

I was at first, now my hype has been totally smashed as they continued releasing information but at the cost of not adding nothing new to the live game. I mean events, and content that you actually play. There’s been none. It’s like “oh look, we’re doing an xpac that’s all about mechanics and laying the groundwork, etc, and because of that no new content for ya, sorry everyone is too busy”.

Sadder part is as you said “oh look, we’re doing an xpac that’s all about mechanics and laying the groundwork, etc”. This is 90% a big feature patch….it doesn’t even feel like an expansion..from what they’ve shown so far. It lacks the “meat”…it just offers you “fries” and tells you it has “meat” flavor in it. It’s like they are trying to sell a “ground-laying” feature patch as an expansion..which in reality it should have been just a regular patch that lead to a proper expansion.

They either have close to nothing when it comes to the expectations of an EXPANSION…or they have the worst marketing&communications team i’ve seen…..or both.

Right now i am not enticed to pay for it. If i do get it, i will only do that after 2-3 months pass and see what ppl say, reviewers say..watch some livestreams etc…because right now it lost not only the hype but the trust i had for it.

You know, yesterday my guildies and I had a heated debate on how ANet is developing the game. Since the feature packs and mostly the NPE, ArenaNet has been on a “rework train”. Everything major is all “we’re reworking because we felt it wasn’t OK”, “we’re re-evaluating this”, “we’re strengthening the core because of…”, “we’re laying the groundwork”, etc. I am honestly sorry, but there are too many reworks and too few actual CONTENT, the “meat” you’ve stated. We’ve even been looking for a new MMORPG because the game has been feeling too much stale content-wise, it seems they can’t offer traditional xpac, but at the same time can’t offer ongoing content like they once planned. The activity in my guild has decreased a lot due to how boring it became to repeat dungeons to death, and they haven’t even revealed a release date.

Why not?
I found the new information we got about the WvW changes rather interesting, and it was fun to see some more of the Dragonhunter in action.

They devoted the Ready Up to show upgrade times for objectives (which they could’ve done in blogpost) and to show DH combo’ing on testers who ran like headless moas. I was expecting some footage from actual WvW’s new upgrade system. Heck, this Ready Up was less interesting than DH reveal which was quite sub-par.

If it takes 18 hours to upgrade a keep, I am sure people will run dolyaks desperately. Upgrade times are on ArenaNet’s hands, and if they intend it to be an important change, they’ll make it so that it’s not a simple “speed up”, but a requirement.

The article said it would take 20-40 minutes to upgrade. That tells us that if no dolyaks make it at all, it will upgrade after 40 minutes. If every dolyak makes it then it will upgrade in 20 minutes.

That was for towers. Also, they’re giving a rough idea, not that such duration is final.

2. We had a guy in our keep once who was angry because he was “left to die” by the zerg, started spending all the supply in the keep to build rams. Nothing we could do to stop him. Now, he can’t ruin our day like he did before.

At first I thought they were removing supply entirely, and I got confused as to why there would still be a Supply Master line. But they’re just taking away the need for supply to upgrade fortifications. So as I understand it the supply will still be needed to build siege. Thus someone could still waste it on building siege in ridiculously useless locations. Right?

Correct, but it shouldn’t be as harmful as it currently is.

Here’s the “special” announcement:
https://www.guildwars2.com/en/news/upgrading-world-vs-world-upgrades/

In summary:
removed a bunch of WvW abilities
Simplified WvW so you no longer need to really participate or organize, everything is now automatic.

For a majority of the Zerg blog they won’t notice the difference, outside of maybe the max supply being less. For the defenders and the people that have spend tons of gold and time upgrading, it’ll be a wonderful QoL save. Not to mention having it stop being a gold sink for the same players (outside of the cost of siege). So I like the idea of things auto upgrading. It also helps to “fix” the problem of someone starting an upgrade while under attack, wasting valuable supply, but at the same time makes it harder for attackers to drain a keeps supply by taking the camps/killing the yaks. Plus the sentry changes will give roamers/defenders more to worry about and for us to get used to for the new borderland.

A little sad about the loss of Applied Fortitude and Applied Strength, and angry about the changes to Supply Capacity just because I just hit ~830 and was finally able to dump the 300 points to get my +5. At least I’ll get to put the points into other lines.

There are a few good things, like the no gold cost, but it takes away important strategy and cooperation. It is also the final nail in the coffin of smaller servers. Any server who can’t fill all 4 maps overnight will be completely destroyed. They will now wake up to fully upgraded maxed out enemy defenses, with no hope of ever recapturing them.

I share your worry. What do you think about having objectives deplete upgrades over time, but at a more sinoidal rate? To go away with “why” we could suppose the walls are “deteriorating”.

In summary:

You’ll still need to really participate and organize, they’re simply shifting the focus on supply usage not to be mandatory upgrade-wise, and allow for actual player strategy siege-wise. This also solves the problem of spies from other servers spending supplies on purpose to mess up upgrading objectives, while they still can steal from objectives it shouldn’t have such an effect it currently has.

By improving caravans/sentries mechanics it makes up for more interesting and undoubtedly REWARDING gameplay for those who enjoy escorting and defending small objectives (i.e. the dolyaks). When the game first launched people used to run dolyaks and it felt rewarding as it helped maintaining objectives resources, now you don’t feel equally useful for running them because blobs traverse the map and effectively scare away anyone trying to run gank them, specially thieves. On the other hand, thieves and other gankers will have a hard time because it was said that escorting dolyaks will increase its resistance, therefore opening up more interesting mechanics for those who like to defend.

As long as blobs no longer become the only way to effectively win matches, I’m looking forward for all changes related to WvW to give it a fresh air and more focus on holding objectives. Holding a point should really mean “I’ve claimed this ground and you will have to work strategically to beat us down!”.

It’s fun to see things being built, and the speculations all around, but it’s not worth of “special thing”. Still, I’m thrilled to see the new LA’s concept arts! It will look outstanding!

Looks like “Nothing, but will roll some content to the live game” was the most correct answer (although new map changes isn’t content at all). ~whee

The week is far from over.

I hear you, and I hope today isn’t the “big surprise” they mentioned. :P

You got nothing on my login screen.

I got this ages ago when I was attempting to run GW2 on a 32-bits SO, after some time I would then run into this same issue.

Conditions in HoT , is the cap fixed?

Check attachment. “Inner Fire” effect depends on number of burning stacks, so I guess burning is changing aswell.

It does sound like that’s what they’ve settled on. Now it’s just a matter of balancing numbers. However, it is still possible that they completely scrap the fire stacking between now and implementation.

That would be a shame… making burning stack intensity could allow for great condi builds, specially for elementalists.

[Suggestion] Joined msg and birthday date

Two QoL suggestions:

  • Add a way to see when it’s your character birthday! It would harm no one to have this information somewhere in Hero’s Panel so we can track who has closest birthday.
  • Send a “Guy joined the guild” message whenever someone joins a guild. This is pretty basic. #kthxbai

Vulnerability power creep with HoTs?

Rock, paper, scissors logic plays a role, and it’s just as fine as it can be. I mean, some professions will suffer from conditions, others will just laugh at condition-heavy opponents. As for PvE, let’s just wait and see what this “challenging group content” is all about.
