And its dreadfully predictable, and several keeps are effectively “immune” to alpha golem rushing so long as you have scouts and inner cannons or door trebs

The problem really isn’t alphas, its the omega’s ranged attack and ability to hit walls. They can engage a keep from anywhere and can avoid anything made to counter them..

For example, the ability to build a ladder that small groups could use to bypass a keep wall would add great tactical options by allowing you to just sneak up behind a mindless zerg standing at the gate.

No, that would just make defending anything impossible when chained-stealth teams of mesmers and thieves jollily skip their way into every thing you own and teleport in an army, or just take it outright. It won’t even be PvDoor anymore just PvAir.

Unless we get better loots from win chest nobody will buy them. I got all the skins 100x even if i was just r30 back then.

Dyes will set the base value and people will buy them. People buy rares to salvage on RNG profit margins of ectoplasms, they’ll buy chests for the same reason and the dye market is terrifyingly stable so the addition of chests will not affect it but will fix the chest price. Naturally, scaling the drop chance of dyes (and number of them) with the tier of chest will also scale the value and prevent everyone from just flooding the market with rabbits and make gaining ranks an appealing prospect outside of /rank.

And, like I said, add in the tiny chance of Lodestones and they will sell.

The best solution would be to make the chests saleable on the TP and change the rewards in them to something people would actually want and be able to use.

Make the chests sell-able; this solves a set of problems:

  • There is no gold being added to the game, its coming from people (and being drained by the tax).
  • Make the dyes inside the chests not-account bound, this will give the chests a base value even if there’s little else inside. Better drop rate for dyes in the higher tier chests.
  • Remove the random skins with just tickets to redeem a tier of skins instead based on your rank. A rabkittenest will drop “Rabbit Reclaim Ticket” that works on up to rabbit level gear. A shark chest will drop an equivalent that works up to shark but if you’re not a shark you can’t get shark level gear.

Tada, I’ve just solved

  • Money for PvPers.
  • Glory to Gold conversion.
  • Bag clutter.

Throw in a random, small chance of dropping Lodestones and we’re good to go.

3. Change from server bases WvWvW to faction based WvWvW, with “overflow” instances added for more players.

This wouldn’t fix anything. Just look at PS2 (or for a more contemporary example within the same venue, WAR, and recall just how out of whack the factions were in terms of balance). There will be a “popular” faction, and the moment you start dividing people based on factional choices, you will definitely make this an apparent issue. Servers means that no matter where you play, you are at the very least identical and do not have to worry or pick “your favorite thing” aside from exactly where you want to play.

Moreover factions bring in the possibility of factional bonuses which just beg for even more bullkitten imbalance.

Uh, there are sandwurms that hit for 30k if you manage to survive the fall. Also the glass lasting a short period is fine: It’s more strategic this way since you have to keep track of your opponent and the platform.

You still have to wait for them to kill you, the map really should just zap you the moment you pass a threshold. Makes it far easier and a smoother transition.

I don’t mean for the glass to last decades, just longer than a general knockback “falling” animation that you cannot stun break. Its just too easy at the moment to send someone to their death without any way for the player to “make amends”. That way, landing a Banish or other launch/updraft isn’t an auto-win.

With a bit of work, I think it can make its way back but they need to change a few things with regards to the insta-kill. Making the glass last a lot longer, making the drop below the map auto-kill and not fall damage so that you don’t get stranded below, the cannon needs some reworking and tuning (it way too strong), etc…

Guess Vena never got to win a HoH. This could save the PvP in GW2. leave conquest fot the e-sport wannabys, and replace hotjoin with this.

I got to win HoH plenty, but don’t you worry about defending your ideas of what is good or bad with anything short of pointless attacks on the speaker. From the original spiritway to VIM to IWAY to Flareway to Smiteballs, I saw all the gimmicks that walked the… halls… of HoH.

What you remember is some mythical place of nostalgia.

Comically enough, the map to define the “winner” of HoH was nothing short of a conquest variant reliant on an idiotic NPC to cap a point.

RA was the most gimmicky, luck based and frustrating PvP mode in GW1.
And yet, I’d rather have team death matches than conquest in GW2.

We did a lot of TA back in the day when it was around but when they removed it, RA became the loop-holed TA with syncs.

Guild Wars 2 players are permitted to use macros as long as the macros are programmed with a 1 key for 1 function protocol.

1. This means that if you program a macro, it must require one keystroke per action. You may not program a single key to perform multiple functions.
2. For example, if you Press A and it results in the casting of a single skill, you’re ok. If you Press A and it casts multiple spells, you’re not ok.

Seems like it’s perfectly valid. You’ve just bound the “area loot” button to a macro instead of a spell or skill.

HA wasn’t always that bad, and people could still access if it if they tried hard enough in the later years. But obviously you shouldn’t have to “try” to get in to a match of pvp. The HA community killed itself. Though I don’t wtf is with the esport talk. HoH wasn’t “esports” it was a fun mode that was part of GW1’s more diverse palette.

While the last line is certainly valid, HoH was always gimmick builds, elitism, and questionably thought-out maps. I don’t know why people reference it as some bastion of fun… it hardly was and most of us who played GvG didn’t touch the place if we could help it. Even though we were forced to win to get Sigils unless we wanted to pay out of the nose for them early on.

RA was a better test of skill than HoH.

I’m not sure what you mean by “WAR spit out”… I don’t have the insane background some of you have with other MMOs/games. I played Runescape for 11 years before moving to GW2.

The maps aren’t currently “well-balance” in any aspect for WvW but we make them work as we best we can.

WAR was the last RvR game we got (it was made by the same dude who’s now taking people’s money to make Camelot Unchained) and it was utter crap. It was one of those MMOs that really was dying within a few months from all sorts of terrible decisions one of which was its terribly designed RvR. The maps were god awful as if they were thrown together, and later they released maps that were effectively empty…

The maps are well-balanced in that they are at their base carefully thought out even if people have long since taken advantage of every small nook and cranny of the maps. There is all of one spot in Cliffside/Crag/Dawns where you can siege uncontested, but then that is also the hardest to lose tower in the Borderlands. Structures are placed at carefully placed distances, there is a weird hierarchy between the keeps that is very unique and played at carefully (though this is largely a meta-evolution). Garrison > Hills/Bay with the later two borderland keeps having unique strengths and weaknesses.

Its not a map like PvE thats just thrown together, let’s put it that way. No map can be perfect when put in the hands of thousands of players but they’ll held up pretty well. :p

Pretty sure BG/SoR both have at least two to three queued maps during NA prime time any given day. Depending on which guilds sortie at least one map is queued during EU.

Reset night, if you miss reset… might as well not even bother unless its on a map where everything is lost and all morale is broken.

I do hope Anet is gonna update the maps that aren’t in the rotation (except for capricorn then). I’d like to see skyhammer and spirit watch back in the rotation.

Spirit Watch keeps getting rejected in tournie play because (a.) it favors certain builds and many top teams seem to dread this, and (b.) speed hackers. Skyhammer had a similar “this map hates bunkers and meta therefore it is bad” backlash… so I wouldn’t expect Spirit Watch to show up anytime soon.

Calm down, no need to be so defensive about this game. I’m just wondering why they need 4 months for a map, that gets thrown out after 1 day in tourament rotation. Also I’m comparing GW2 with other games, not only GW1. So take that into consideration.

What are you talking about? I am simply telling you GW1 history. They released a total of 8 maps in the initial two years, and then nothing after. HoH had some terribly designed, latency headache maps like Twin Spires and Relics. The courtyard was a mess of a map, and even the Hall itself was designed such that it was basically 15 minutes of standing around till everyone mad-rushed the middle. RA/TA never saw new maps aside from I think a couple added with the Zaishen change, iirc.

The Skyhammer map wasn’t made specifically by the PvP devs, it was an idea by one of the designers and was put together with PvP dev input. Despite its issues, I think it was a good idea but it just needs a bit more tweaking. Its certainly the best “game” map we have for Custom Arena fun nights or Hot Join casual play.

I’ve heard they are in the works, but of course that’s half rumors and other half wishful thinkin’… I’ve only played skyhammer 3-4 times and each time I’ve camped Point B because it seems to be where all the action is, not to mention I love fearing people off the cliff.

If you remember, before launch, Habib and the other original WvW dev explained that it had taken them, during development time (meaning they had full time available on testing and building the two maps), close to half a year for just a single map to be made, tested, and carefully “siege checked”. From that, WvW got two maps that were/are some of the best maps designed in this game (and many others given the kittenstain excuses for maps WAR provided).

Post development, how long do you think it would take to generate an equally sized, carefully tested map as EBG? Which is probably about 20x the size of a single PvP map which takes at least a couple of months of development and testing. And, if our .dat mining friends are at all smelling the bacon, something is very much being worked on and its EBG large. Now, the question is… do you want a kittenty map like what WAR spit out and effectively killed itself with terrible design or a well balanced map?

I look at other games and I can clearly see the difference in the pace of development. A-Net made maps on GW1 too (around 20), so I’m confused what’s going wrong here. That would be 20 × 4 = 80 months for all maps? So ye, I kinda ask myself why they need so long for 1 map.

GW1 maps were also identical in mechanics almost to a T, effectively making just about every map a palette swap of another with a few terrain changes.

Post launch they added all of eight maps to GvG, four after the year gap between release and Factions and another four for Nightfall. It launched with twelve. HoH never saw a new map and some of the maps were terribly designed. RA/TA/CA saw like no additions either.

But if we’re going to compare every PvP format, we might as well throw in the GW2 Borderlands and EBG which are a massive map undertaking unlike a tiny PvP map (and consequently why WvW still has no new maps).

Maguuma is going to lose it’s match (ok, take 2nd) by over 100k behind; but they are still pulling ahead of SoS in the ratings because CD and SBI didn’t roll over and die.

And? Historically, post-collapse, SoS was never ranked above Maguuma aside from week 22→23 jump where SoS was marked up so high that it gained three ranks from 10 to 7 while Maguuma lost ratings due to its one-sided match up against DB (which clearly shows the distinction between the top six servers and the next set down, and then further the distinction between TC and DB/FA).

Meanwhile, you can see how servers ranked several ranks below their competitors, ended up winning in the middle to low tiers, showing that the old system had effectively stranded servers in places where they didn’t belong. The biggest problem, at the moment, is that the top servers have such hard distinctions between them and everything else below that some of them just have no place to fit. TC is a prime example of a server in limbo.

In general, if the spread was cut-tighter the top six servers should be pretty much isolated from the others, leaving T1/T2 pretty much stable (of course this becomes a problem in T1 where the match-up is already so likely that TC will almost never break into T1), much to the chagrin of the stale T1 match-up and, possibly TC, who haven’t showed much trouble in beating their rank-neighbors.

But, looking at the middle tiers, cutting the spread right now wouldn’t be right because you still have middle/low-tier servers that are showing that they don’t belong in their current rank (either up or down).

So, now, we’re stuck with a limbo-server (TC) and even if they move up by chance, whoever is displaced from T1 will simply demolish anyone they are put up-against. This pretty much means we have a guaranteed bad match-up every week in that slot because we have four servers that “fit” T1 but only three slots in T1. The T3 grouping is the only one that has been consistently mis-matched without any caveats to the match-up unlike T2 which is always going to be lopsided either because TC is stuck in limbo or because SoR/BG/JQ got found their way into T2 and did to it as a meteor does to the fine china. T3 – T7 have oscillated between good and bad match-ups as servers have moved around in the placings.

That said, look at the match-ups and you can already see how broken the old “ratings” were. You have three close matches but two of them would have never happened in the old system. TC is stuck in limbo because they are not a T2 server but there’s no room for them in T1, so someone is either going to get stomped by them or by whoever is pushed out of T1 for a week. This would be unavoidable under any system because there are four servers to three spots. In T7 19>23>17 which doesn’t fit any expectation (so this needed to happen to properly place these servers), and T8 has and will always remain a lopsided match-up.

So, in NA, the only “predictable one-sided” match-ups that aren’t the limbo-trapped TC match-up are T3 and T4.

EU is all wonks of messed up from the old system but I spy with my little eye four, maybe even five given how lenient one with their metric, of “close” matches.

No kidding, is this even fun for SoR? I know [KISS] recently transferred but I would think they would at least want some decent fights… kind of embarrassing for them, unless they came to just piggy-back SoR’s success.

KISS should have gone to JQ if anything.

BG has HB/RK three or so days out of the week.
JQ effectively has no-one.
SoR has IRON & KISS.

If KISS was on JQ you’d at least have some semblance of balance.

I’ve never seen so many omegas used to take keeps defended by less than 15 people by a zergs of 60+.

Every time I see an omega, at this point, I just assume its a duped one. When I see twenty-five of them used to take effectively undefended objects… ya.


I hope Waha just puts SoR down to 0 ppt during his time; team up with MERC/ND/WM and make it happen. This is just stupid atm.

It’s been months and nobody at Anet gives a flying kitten about pugs being mathed up against premades.

Not enough people.
PUGs with a high enough rating shouldn’t even be PUGs anymore.
Real PUGs get matched up against young premades who usually aren’t very good.
etc…

What we need is:
- Fill out a drop.
- A bit more tweaks on the MM math.

No, I just have 1 bazillion dodges on the thief. Dodge Dodge Heal (dodge heal) Dodge (adventures) change weapons to same set (energy), Dodge, Dodge

Without stealth, you have next to no condition removal outside of 20s(?) heal cooldown. You’d simply be DoA against any condition spec and dodging doesn’t prevent them from ticking, and you can’t dodge all their applications.

You have no way to disengage either, and since they nerfed main hand sword you can’t even bounce around anymore. One immob will sink you unless you’re running Withdrawl, but then you have no way of dropping the dot conditions.

Wouldn’t help them except for punishing the one server stuck with fighting the two effectively “dead zones” for WvW as has always been the case.

Vabbi and FoW have been the “dead zone” since launch (look at the mos history), you can’t fix that. They are just empty for WvW. The only fix would be to put them in a tier of their own vs. a computer… and they’d still lose. (Also why this thread is flawed, you’re using the ultimate extreme to try and make a point.)

Maybe merge a single server to give even numbers, and then let Vabbi and FoW have their special “empty” tier.

I don’t see anything wrong with them, they are options that (at least the siege efficiency) could be very useful.

Efficiency is a nice thing to have and flash siege is a staple option in the book of WvW field tactics. The fact that you can have a specific group be very specifically built for flash siege that is truly flash built is not a bad thing. If this is a decently cheap to invest in line it can easily be incorporated into further allowing for the development of a “siege crew” group (20 supply capacity + flash siege + a specific open field siege mastery = pretty potent, or flash built cannons/oil).

Its excellent for ninja groups because it turns a “build this ram quick” to “build this ram instantly”. Its also excellent for counter siege or counter-counter siege that will have the ability to be very “sneaky” and sudden if it can be built truly on a flash.

The repair one is a bit lackluster and I can only really see it having use in the rather limited scenarios of flash built walls or doors to split teams.

I don’t know where you get your info from, but on Blu’s channel stream was avaliable in both 720p+ and 360p for those with worse connections.

The 720 was choppy as hell for a lot of people, myself included.
The 360 was like wearing wrong prescription glasses.

It was a trial to show that there is interest in pvp to see if it was worth ESL’s time to pick up. That is something you would want a lot of people to watch to show that there is interest, no?

Almost no one promoted this thing outside of an almost last minute reddit post, a post in the events forum, and the two weeks or so ago post about ESL showing interest (again). I’ve seen MistLeague have better promotions. Guru had a constant “keeping you aware of it” promotion. Moreover, the stream was terrible and many viewers as they themselves stated in posts or in the chat just couldn’t watch it because of the stream quality (which may be a sad catch 22).

Maybe the dev’s think (as they probably should) thakittens not really time to pick the game up in ESL? Custom Arenas (the very heart of these tournaments) is still clunky. The game is quasi-stable… maybe, for once, their waiting for their eggs to hatch before offering to sell chickens. Maybe it was nice to see how many people would show up for something like this… who knows.

And, ya, we should expect the dev’s to advertise and they did. But how much clout do you think a dev is going to have to have this posted on the loading screne when so you don’t even have a tenth of the same community-built promotion as the Guru tournie?

Again, no one is asking necros to lose their condition power. People are talking about double necros or necro+engi teaming and destroying 3-4 people on point due to the massive area of effect conditions flying around.

Why the hell are 3-4 people all standing on the point eating AoEs like that?

That sub-forum needs to go away. Re-routing events with such a small playerbase is counter productive.

I don’t think there’s anything wrong with having it, makes it very easy to track down events when this general forum is otherwise swarmed with crap threads about “nerf this”, “buff that”, “daed game”, and so on. I don’t want to sift through the garbage here just to find events.

If anything, just post it in here as well when its something as big as ESL. Or make a cross-over bulletin at the top of this forum that updates with “hot topics” from the events subforum.

And what exactly did people expect? The maximum we’ve had was 4k during a long advertised, Guru (very well known GW2 forum under Curse) tournament with actual winnings at stake. ESL had a couple hundred over 2k for a trial, and, I’m sorry to say, but its hard for an audience to invest when there’s bugger-all being fought over.

If you want to know the biggest problem, its simple: way to many events that are fracturing attention. I can’t spend all day, every week watching events, I want to play too sometime. This is why I’ve slowly started just following blu, grouch, and MistLeague, and ESL because it was a special occasion, and even then I’m still limited on how much time I can throw around.

Survivability? Hmmm.. I actually think my mesmer is more surviveable even though he’s not running a tough brawler setup like necro.

Being alive is the most important thing… and necros have no such capability.

A single necro is not a problem, its two terror necros chaining you with fear and epidemic. The counter point to this is that the team using said comp will crumble under even the slightest bit of pressure as they have two targets that cannot do anything but cry when focused.

Also you forgot Moa.

Blind VS Aegis - "Apparent" Balance

Blind works fine as a condition but the rate at which it can be applied doesn’t promote intelligent gameplay.

Its applied at the same rate as it was in GW1, go go BS spam, in this scenario you can actually remove the kitten thing by swinging with an auto-attack. The problem is the field that allows it to spammed more than anything else. Get rid of or greatly increase the initiative cost on the powder.

Even with 1200 Healing Power, it’s only a 7k HP heal in total.

And a thief with full healing power build? What?

Maybe he had -50hp Grim Cesta which, scaled to GW2, would be -833 health? Am I close yet? He was also equipped with all superior runes…

It’s ridiculous indeed. The strongest thief heals him for 5760 HP including the regen boon for the whole duration.

Thieves have at least 10k HP

Maybe he was running full healing power with no vit?
