Zergs are a form of attrition, a basic but effective military strategy.

That said, I do believe that there should be a place to duel other people in PvE. I would recommend using the arena in the black citadel or the arena in plains of ashford.

It’s a great game.

The dev team is INFURIATING at times, but pure genious at others. It’s still going through growing pains, but it will last a LONG time.

People were calling the game dead…now we have issues with huge lag spikes cuz people are frequenting certain areas for dailies.

It’s worth the 40-60 bucks just to have on your computer.

I don’t mind the daily structure. It’s great that they are providing an incentive to go to other areas outside one’s comfort zone.

What I hate is that dailies are no longer optional if going for BiS gear. You must do your daily, your daily FotM, and weekly guild missions to stay a float. And all that is for one character.

Rewards: days played vs. time played

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Vorch.2985

OP needs to grow up realize that its his/her decision to either log in or not. Skipping a daily far from something that can be called a “punishment” in any sense. A punishment is when the game deducts something you earned, not denies you something you clearly dont deserve. You decide your goals and how and why you achieve them. If getting ascended gear is your obsession, FotM is clearly a better method.

Wow…ok.

I don’t agree with your idea of what “punishment” is, but I’ll work with it. Take player A and player B.

  • Player A plays 20 hours a week; all primarily on weekends. He completes 3 dailies total: Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.
  • Player B plays for 10 hours a week. Player B logs on for about half an hour every day to complete dailies and does FotM 3 times a week.

As far as ascended gear goes, Player A will always be behind Player B even though Player A puts forth more effort.

That is where many people are getting upset. They want to work towards something, but with the time gates on amulets, accessories, and even rings with FotM dailies, time is the greatest obstacle. It doesn’t matter if you are super fast at clearing dungeons, it doesn’t matter that you are a Master Crafter and like making your own gear, and it doesn’t matter if you prefer simply hanging out in WvW.

If you don’t do your daily, FotM, and now Guild Missions, you will be behind. Period. They are taking away our ability to play the way we prefer and still be rewarded.

That’s punishment.

ADDENDUM: I am not asking to be rewarded simply for killing a rat once every two weeks. I’m asking for the ability to put forth effort on my own time, on my own schedule, and the way that I want. It used to be like that…

GW 1 had vertical progression.

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Vorch.2985

Vorch.2985

Yes, GW1 absolutely had vertical progression.

What it did NOT have was vertical progression that made your previous gear obsolete.
What it did NOT have was vertical progression behind a time gate.

  • I could farm for a week or during a double faction weekend and earn a Kurzick/Luxon/Sunspear/Lightbringer title.
  • No matter how hard I try, I CAN NOT gain more than 40 laurels a month. No matter how hard I try, I CAN NOT gain more than a certain number of guild merits a day.
  • I now have to choose what alt will be maxed out. The rest will stay sub par. HOW IS THAT OK?
  • The worst part is, if someone is new to the game, no matter how much effort they put in, they can NEVER have the power of someone who has done dailies from the get go. THAT…IS…NOT…RIGHT.

I am not against vertical progression; I was a GWAMM in GW1. What I am against is making current gear obsolete. ESPECIALLY if it is stuck firmly behind a time gate.

Reward me for skill like with the clocktower; reward me for continuous effort like with dungeon tokens. DO NOT make my current gear worthless. DO NOT make me walk in lock-step with everyone else with time gates. DO NOT make it take years to outfit all alternate characters. DO NOT make it impossible for new people to reach the same level as someone who started eariler than them.

Yup, I think we’re on the same page. It’s not the number of currencies that really bothers me; they all serve the same purpose.

Except unlike other currencies in the game, there are two that I can not earn more by playing more.

Laurels and Merits can only be earned at a pre-set pace.

Which would be fine if there wasn’t statistically significant gear behind them.

Hmm just sounded like one those that wants every piece of gear handed to them asap and rage quit because they don’t get the top tier gear on day one.

…not taking that bait.

I will say, however, there are other forms of vertical progression outside of the geartreadmill.

Title tiers were used in GW1 and offered offensive, defensive, and skill buffs to those who pursued them. They could have been used here as well; adding new tiers or titles would have given people something to chase instead of making their entire arsenal useless.

You thought the guild mission and ascended item whiplash was bad? Wait until they decide to raise the level cap.

Bait?…O_o I am not fishing. Yeah aion seems to be like that where titles give you different stats, I did find that cool. From what I am seeing there are multiple ways of getting ascended gear so I am not seeing the problem but I am sure it’s gonna involve “it takes more than killing that frog in the beginning area to get an entire set”. All the complaints I honestly have seen involves nothing more than people wanting the gear just handed to them asap aka wow style. Especially with the guild missions.

I don’t think people want the gear handed to them.

As someone stated in a prior thread, there are three ways of gating content:

  • Skill/Tactics gated (i.e. Exotic at the end of the clock-tower on halloween)
This gear can be obtained in VERY short amount of time if one has the skill
  • Effort Gated(i.e. Karma, Dungeon tokens and, to a certain extent, pristine relics)
This gear requires some skill to achieve initially, but after a while, the content can be repeated at will to achieve all the gear you need
  • Time Gated (i.e. Laurels, Guild Merits, and to a certain extent, pristine relics)
No matter how skilled you are or how much effort you put forth, you are limited by the amount of currency that you can obtain over a time period.

Imo, BiS gear should be behind skill and effort gates, while unique skins and convenience items should be time gated.

Well ppl have gone out of there way to say they hate RNG of drops so currency is a counter to this but you must run the event to get the currency. You should not be able to run CoF to get AC gear. There only realty 4 true currency every thing else is just a simple place holder. Gold, and Krama are the main ones Laurel and Guild Commendation are the very off ones that are not comply true currency.

Methods of acquiring gear:

1. Gold
2. Gems
3. Karma
4. Dungeon Tokens
5. Relics
6 Badges of honor
7. Pristine Relics
8. Laurels
9. Merits

The time-gated mechanism in front of statistical advantages on the last 3 are what’s causing a problem. At least pristine relics can be mitigated with multiple characters or higher tiers in fractals.

Laurels require a daily log on to keep up. Merits require a large, active guild that does frequent guild missions.

I wouldn’t be complaining if there were aesthetic and convenience items behind those time-gates…but instead, we have advantages.

Karma was an ingenious system that has now been thrown to the waist side.

It was far too easily gamed by people and was thus highly subject to inflation. Seriously, that’s one of the big problems with it.

They could have combined karma with other currency to acquire gear.

For example: 200k karma + 40 skill points; 100k Karma + 50 ecto; 250k Karma + 5 gold; 200k Karma + 500 dungeon tokens.

They had options…but instead chose to time gate.

Just wanted you guys to know that these are also available as guild mission rewards as well. You can get them as random rewards from completing missions or from the commendation vendor.

That’s good news. Although it really makes me wonder how you guys came up with this price as a valid equivalent to a guild mission. I seriously doubt you expect 6 guild missions to be as difficult as acquiring 40 laurels and 50 ecto.

It’s partially related to the time it takes. Personal rewards for guild missions can only be claimed once per week per mission category. Therefore if your guild only has guild bounties unlocked, it will take you 6 weeks to claim one of these accessories from the commendation vendor (assuming you don’t spend your commendations on anything else).

When the developer is ok with each piece of BiS gear taking 4-6 weeks to acquire…then I’m going to have to say no.

So much fun to be had in this game…all overshadowed by gear that has to be farmed religiously to obtain. In 2012, a brand new person could take 1-2 weeks to catch up to someone at launch. Now, a new person is shafted.

Seems like a lot of the GW1 players I encounter in these forums are so DRAMATIC. I never played GW1, so I don’t know what is making you guys this way, but kitten – calm down a bit!

I’m a GW1 player.

GW2 was fine for a long time. I even bit my tongue when ascended items were initially released.

However, now we have multiple time gates to statistical advantages with the laurel and commendation currencies. Instead of building on the current currencies (gold, gems, karma, dungeon tokens, and badges of honor), we are seeing stat advantages that reward unskilled/low effort play. Instead, they are essentially saying “log in for one month, get a stat based reward; join a large guild AND log in for one month, get another stat based reward”

That is NOT ok. I’ve defended everything they’ve done, but this is not right. This was supposed to be a game you could put down for a few months and get right back in. What the hell happened.

Pooling the currencies would be nice.

But ending the time gating that these additional currencies have would be better.

The best option would be to have all statistical gear available from any currency. Save aesthetics and convenience items for exclusve currencies.

Time Gates make me want to play less....

I agree. The time gates are starting to get ridiculous. I wouldn’t mind them so much if there were alternative methods of acquiring the gear, but alas, there are not.

It’s a silly, fun-wrecking mechanism.

You have a chance at receiving ruined ore/logs if you are harvesting while in combat.

I’m not one to seek out a direct answer, but I really would like to know the thought process behind all these new currencies and the apparent abandonment of the ingenious Karma currency where you literally acquire it by playing however you want.

Add that to the abandonment of Badges of Honor, Dungeon Tokens, Crafting (jeweler is pointless atm) and the enormous gating of laurels…for the first time, I’m worried about the future of the game.

EDIT: And now it’s been moved to suggestions; where threads go to die.

Guild Missions [merged]

I still think that having content catered to larger guilds is fine.

What I’m miffed about is that there are now statistical advantages that can only be acquired by having a larger guild. They should have NEVER offered ascended accessories with guild commendations without multiple means of acquiring them.

And no, 40 laurels (1 monthly and 30 dailies) + 50 ecto is not an acceptable alternative.

  • Gold/Gems
  • Karma
  • Dungeon Tokens
  • Badges of Honor
  • Laurels
  • Relics/Pristine Relics

Everytime you release new accessories…YOU MUST MAKE SURE THAT THEY ARE AVAILABLE TO ALL PLAYSTYLES AND PREVIOUS CURRENCIES. That’s the difference between introducing a new optional playstyle with guild missions and introducing a new checklist grind with guild missions.

I forgave the lack of this feature for the first few months.

It’s now 2013. Give us the means to manage our guilds. This isn’t some crazy feature we’re asking for…this is the bare minimum of what should be expected for guild management.

In my opinion, Dailies are a shallow gameplay mechanic

They have that wonderful currency called Karma that allows you to play however you want. It was genious

Yet they continue to add currencies to give artificial time gates. Now there are certain things you can only get with laurels, certain things you can only get with relics, and certain things you can only get with guild commendations.

Such a huge game with an ingenious ubiquitous currency in Karma, yet they choose to add these kitten gates everywhere.

NO MORE NEW CURRENCIES. ..Build on what you already have!!! Yes, I’m going to keep repeating this over and over until they finally listen.

No, what I’m asking is what’s the point of them if you’re not doing the high level fractals?

WvW. And the fact that BiS gear is not supposed to take 2-3 months of continuous play to achieve…on one character.

Especially in this game.

“Full ascended set?”

Backpiece (Fractals + Mystic Forge)
Earrings (Guild Missions + 5g each OR 40 laurels + 50 ecto each)
Rings (Fractals or laurels)
Amulet (Laurels)

If you try going for a full set right now, it will make you quit. And I’m serious…as much as I love the game, these new currencies are putting me off in a big way.

It matters in WvW. The rings did not matter that much at first, but with each addition, the gap between a full set of exotics vs a full set of ascended gets wider.

PROS:

  • TP items are finally viewable. I can see how something looks before investing all the effort.
  • AC revamp. I largely enjoyed it. It’s much more challenging for experienced players. This is also a con, listed below
  • Additional backpiece customization, additional hair and eye options, all welcome
  • New dailies offer more options and still change from day to day. Did keg brawl for the first time in months…I still got it
  • New method for acquiring Ascended gear AND precursors. This is very welcome and I hope precursor prices drop because of this.
  • Orange swords for WvW. Offers a little more cover for small groups. Appreciate that.
  • sPvP: thanks for match making and removing paids
  • Thanks for showing guardians and necros some love

CONS

  • AC Revamp. This is no longer an introductory dungeon…not at ALL. Even though I enjoyed it, it took a skilled group of level 80s to get through it. Some of the level 80s I had actually ragequit. I love a challenge, but the BEGINNER dungeon is not the place for it. That said, this would be a PERFECT HARDMODE beginner dungeon. Doable with skilled pug, but harder than the normal version.
  • sPvP…too much to write. Read the forums there
  • Guild Mission Bug. This is inexcusable. You are becoming the Bethesda of the MMO world, people are now expecting a huge, avoidable bug on the day of release with later fixes that have smaller bugs and a final fix that makes it the way it was supposed to be in the first place. Get your skritt together.
  • Rangers…need…help. Seriously. They need some life support. Now.
  • Orr. After the EXCELLENT job you did last month fixing Orr, you decided to add champions everywhere. Why? I seriously want to know. You took what you did right less than a month ago, and now you do this…
  • 72 hours until guild bounties…the most talked about portion of the patch…why???
  • Most importantly…you’ve added another currency and linked exclusive statistical advances to them. This…needs…to…STOP. We have karma, gold, gems, dungeon tokens, laurels, commendations, badges of honor…USE WHAT WE HAVE. Stop making artificial gates. Karma is one of the most ingenious things EVER. Do whatever you want, earn karma while doing it. USE KARMA.

Tell him that if he is ok with full exotics, this game is one of the best MMOs on the market.

However, if he wants a full ascended set…don’t even start trying. It’s absolutely ridiculous atm. They say that they’ll add more methods of attaining them, but as of right now STAY AWAY.

The rest of the game is good. The ascended gear acquisition is asinine.
