Support has lost its meaning ; too broad

I consider Support anything that is done TO your TEAM by:

  • mitigating damage received (including vigor and reflect)
  • increasing damage given

I consider Control anything done to ENEMIES that:

  • Decreases damage done by enemies directly (weakness)
  • Decreases damage done by enemies indirectly (stun and CC)
  • Increase damage done TO enemies (vulnerability)

Most builds have some inherent support or control, but I would only consider builds focused on those specific roles as support or control builds.

I definitely like seeing more people enjoying support roles, though

Here are your options in order of best to worst (imo)

1. Wait for scavenger hunt
2. Purchase precursor off of TP
……99. Try to obtain via RNG

I like the game. I hate RNG. I would hate the game too if I tried throwing crap into the MF for a 20% chance that it’s an exotic and a 1% chance that that exotic is a precursor. Keep in mind, you could try 1000 times…and each time has the same chance.

NEVER choose RNG when you don’t need to.

From MMORPG.COM

“The dungeon is also geared towards replayability. There are a variety of different enemies that will change randomly and subtly. There are differences in the groups you’ll face, and even in the voiceover dialog within the dungeon itself to make sure it’s not exactly the same time and again. There are also, of course, lots of unique rewards to the Molten Weapons Facility dungeon. As the story itself progresses through the end of April and into May, players will notices that the entrances to the dungeon itself will change (to signify that players are storming in and destroying these facilities). When the story comes to its crescendo, the final location of the dungeon and its entrance for repeated play will be set.”

I don’t see the dungeon being temporary. Until ANet says otherwise, that’s going to be my assumption.

Vorch.2985

This is a real issue I have with owPvE: difficulty does not scale very well with population.

Personally, I would love if there were enemies that could 2-3 shot people. But when you have 3-5 people with you, it all of a sudden doesn’t matter.

  • There need to be enemies that punish autoattacking. 25 stacks of retaliation for 5 secs at 75, 50, and 25% health? Hell yes.
  • There needs to be more bosses like, sad to say, the King Frog from the SAB. Force people to engage in active combat instead of standing at 1200-1500 range and pew pewing to win. In the end, everyone enjoys it more.
  • Bring in Hard Mode open world (level scaled down by 5, 100% MF added) and fractal elements to dungeons.

However, keep this in mind: people may not enjoy a more difficult game…they may simply flock to what ever content is easiest to do.

Sometimes I wonder if I am playing the same game as some of you guys.

As much as I dislike ascended gear; you don’t need it outside of FotM 20+. I play dungeons for fun (not CoF p1), do dailies when I can, and explore/WvW in between.

OP, you say that dungeons need a lot more attention, but don’t list your specific criticisms. You do the same with WvW. Imo, dungeons need more interesting encounters a la the AC update, but WvW post-culling seems to be very lively, and I’m on a tier 5 server.

It seems like you want the game to take itself more seriously as you are enraged by the SAB and quaggan backpacks. I assume the candycorn people, grenches, rollerbeetles, candy cane weapons, and April fools day pranks of GW1 also disappointed you as well.

People used to have fun with sticks and rubber balls. I find this game to be more engaging than GW1. I think the issue for some people is that they prefer CORPGs of MMOs, which is not a bad thing.

The game is worked on month by month. They have improved A LOT since launch. I hope one day that whatever personal issues you have work out for you and you come back to community.

Also, try role-playing.

  • GW1 was not as diverse as people make it out to be
  • GW2’s diversity comes from a variety of classes, GW1 came from 1300+ skills (12 .

Please name the team set up which only used 12 skills across all 8 players with different classes and which worked both in PvE – UW/FoW/DoA/Dungeons and competitive PvP – HA and GvG.
I’ll be waiting.

Please don’t speak if you don’t know what you’re talking about.

“THE FOLLOWING 5 SKILLS (1. Shadowform, 2. Signet of Spirits, 3. Protective Spirit, 4. Discord, and 5. Unyielding Aura) make up OVER 90% of PvE in GW1. That’s not disputable. I challenge you to have an effective team without any of those skills.

I’ll be talking strictly from a PvE stand point

Please run " UW/FoW/DoA/Dungeons" without using Shadow form, Sliver Armor, UA, or Protective spirit. I’ll wait.

Read and chill dude…read and chill.

Answer me how do you make up a team consisting of 8 player who only use 12 SAME SKILLS out of all 1000 skills.

Plus, Discord was only used in teams with 4+ Necros, and it didn;t work completely everywhere.
Healing Seed or Seed of Life were more viable options for PvE in speed runs than PS unless you’re thinkinh about meta game 2006-7.
UA was the best skill but HB was also equally good (Combined with the 2 skills named above).
SoS was certainly the best RT skill.

Ok…gonna make my list of 12 that I had when this argument popped up in guild chat in 2010. The challenge poised by another officer was to break GW1 PvE by removing <1% of the skills (1300+ skills, I picked 12). We were having almost this exact debate pre-Battle for Lion’s Arch WiK nerf.

* I repeat, The goal was the make completing ALL elite areas and hardmode vanqing/missions undoable by removing <1% of the skills in the game*

  • Shadowform
  • Protective Spirit
  • Discord
  • Signet of Spirits
  • UA
  • HB (healer’s boon, not hundred blades)
  • Sliver armor
  • Spiteful Spirit
  • Panic
  • Mistrust
  • Death Nova
  • Assassin’s Promise

I will repeat: I am not saying that every person on the team must have these skills. I am saying that if these skills were removed, PvE (I only considered Hardmode when ever talking about PvE) would not be doable. I maintain that.

In fact, I have my GW1 account still active (play about once a week). I would love to help someone make a team that proves this wrong.

Some of you keep on comparing GW2, just one game with gw1 with full expansion. I don’t think that’s fair. Come up with competetive build with only prophecies skills and talk about build diversity. I still think the dual professions was more part of the build diversity than the skills of the class itself.

http://www.guildwars.com/competitive/gwwc/

So, you think that EVIL would use only prophecies skills against people with Factions+NF+EotN and remain competitive?

Vorch.2985

Simply not true. 12 skills mattered? GL playing with 8 people only using 12 skills. Honestly, I could make a great PvE team that can clear any content apart from maybe HM elite areas, without any skill you listed. In fact I never used those skills anyway. And yes if you really wanted you could bring boring builds like assassin’s promise/finish him, but then it’s your own fault. There were other builds at least as effective that were a lot less boring. GW1 had great build diversity, and the fact that you managed to find a few skills that are the pool of overall most powerful/useful ones, doesn’t decrease that diversity.

Also you say GW2’s build diversity comes from variety of classes. By this logic, you could even say Aion had build diversity. It didn’t, but you are saying that somehow having classes is build diversity. See the point? When people say GW2 lacks build diversity, they don’t mean it lacks classes. They mean it lacks different ways to “build” each class.

And for the issue about difficulty and people just going to another area exists a very simple solution: give more difficult content a better reward. This could easily be implemented by giving harder dungeon paths (CoF p3?) more tokens as a reward. I mean arenanet probably has statistics that say something like “CoF runs path 1 – 95%, path 2 – 5%, path 3 – 0%” is there nobody that every thinks “maybe path 3 should be more rewarding” ?

When I said that 12 skills mattered, I will repeat: almost every TEAM had or required those skills.

  • In PvE, Discord, Protective Spirit, Signet of Spirits, and Shadow Form or Assassin’s Promise were almost ALWAYS present. Period. Hero builds were built around those skills (i.e. assassin’s promise + YMLAD to make discord work on called target).
  • I’d really like to hear these PvE team builds that people used that were not discord, sabway, SoS/Ghostly signet, or mesmer hero shutdown. You guys didn’t use protective spirit on your team? That’s leet. Honestly, I would like to hear them
  • Shadowform, Protective Spirit, and UA are almost ALWAYS used in elite areas (UW, FoW, Urgoz, Deep, etc). Period. I honestly can’t remember the last time I did an elite area without a shadowform tank…oh, wait I can. The Ursan Debacle.
  • As stated in the quotes, I have multiple (2 to 4) builds for every class except necromancer and ranger, which I don’t use b/c they both have serious balance problems and/or don’t fit a playstyle I enjoy.

@Vorch

I was running FoW and UW quite fine before those skills even made it into the game. So, yea, about what you said…

FoW and UW are quite different now from release, back when FoW armor cost an arm and a leg.

I see people who haven’t earned an achievement point since 3/26. I think leaderboards were added the 7th of april or something?

Remember they tracked them for a few weeks before releasing them to the public.

oh, i see. My bad.

OP didn’t say all Elite skills are not worth using…he/she said that most are not worth using.

Which is completely true, based on a class and playstyle your decision is usually obvious…at most you decide between two of them.

Yup, we need more, but he also said he really doesn’t use them :/ I frequently use mine

Just because 90% of the people lack imagination does not mean there wasn’t any build diversity. From your 5 skills I only use SoS and only if I bothered to bring my Rit. This is coming from someone else with GWAMM and 50/50.

The diversity in GW2 is false diversity though as you don’t need the other classes.

The whole point of not needing other classes was to eliminate the “lf healer, experienced Shadowform Assassin” Outside of the ranger and necro (not very familiar with them), I can come up with teams consisting of one class for any dungeon.

Also, you didn’t use protective spirit or discord when you were vanqing? That’s leet.

Only way I could think of avoiding using those in Winds of Change would to go with Ether Prodigy eles and shutdown mesmers.

This is great, but unfortunately it doesn’t track back before the leaderboards were active (this is why it doesn’t track past ~2 weeks ago). Thanks for the catch!

Most of my guild has been active within the last week, with about 30 within 2 weeks and a dozen or so greater than that.

Gonna tell my guild about this. They need to add this in-game, though

No More New Currencies for New Rewards

You don’t need any of those currencies to get what you need in this game so whats the problem?

If you do not want ascended gear, there really isn’t an issue. PvE can be done with rares and exotics. That’s indisputable.

However, if you want ascended gear, there is an obvious problem with time gating. While I have no problem earning said gear (i.e. only available through effort based currencies and not gold), time gates make it so no amount of effort will stop you from walking in lock-step with everyone else.

This is primarily meant as a way to extend the life of content. That’s fine with me. However, I do NOT want statistical advantages placed behind time-gates.

OP, I’m gonna address both 1 (Minimal Build diversity/customising ) and 4 (Depth of battle) as I keep hearing this “depth of combat” argument from GW1. This is coming from a GWAMM, mind you. I’ll be talking strictly from a PvE stand point

I submit that even with it’s 1300+ skills, GW1 did not have the “build diversity” that so many claim. It makes me cringe every time I hear this argument, because:

  • Out of the 1300+ skills, 12 mattered. That’s right, 12. Maybe less.
  • THE FOLLOWING 5 SKILLS (1. Shadowform, 2. Signet of Spirits, 3. Protective Spirit, 4. Discord, and 5. Unyielding Aura) make up OVER 90% of PvE in GW1. That’s not disputable. I challenge you to have an effective team without any of those skills.
  • Due to the ability to dual spec, the every class could use these skills. That meant that variations of Discordway with some mesmer heroes for shut down and either ritualists or monks for support made the PvE facerollable, even through Winds of Change.
  • You say you wouldn’t just blow through your skills…all you had to do was call target on the healer, use Assassin’s Promise + YMLAD>“Finish Him” @ <50% health and repeat. Forever. For anything outside of elite areas (in those, you used Shadowform…see where this is going?)

Now that that’s out of the way, I’d like to say this:

GW2 is not exempt from these issues, but they are not as dire as my GW1 brethren make it out to be.

  • I have multiple builds on my Warrior, Guardian, Engineer, Mesmer, Thief, and Ele. However, I use one build on my necro and can’t stand my ranger.
  • Build diversity in GW2 comes from unique classes rather than 1300+ skills available to all. Each class has it’s own skills as opposed to every class having access to every skill (making balance undoable).
  • Guild Wars 2 needs classes to be more balanced. I think the culprit is the decision to balance everything for PvP, which presents VERY different challenges than PvE (a single target stun in PvP can lead to a quick death and be very good; a single target stun in PvE may be quite useless with Defiant on bosses and multiple mobs during most encounters.)
  • I really wish respeccing was able to be done when out-of-combat and out of a dungeon. The fee is not the issue for me; the need to go to a specific location to experiment is.
  • Enemies need to be a bit tougher in open-world PvE areas. I understand that people hate CC on mobs, but it does force you to pay attention. I suspect that you are able to “blow through your skills” because you either play simplistic dungeon paths or stick to general PvE. Unfortunately, when ANet makes a dungeon path more difficult, people tend to just go to an easier path.

TL;DR:

  • GW1 was not as diverse as people make it out to be
  • GW2’s diversity comes from a variety of classes, GW1 came from 1300+ skills (12 mattered)
  • GW2 needs better balance; balance issues stem from PvE being balanced for PvP
  • Encounters need to be more difficult in GW2; however, then people would simply go to a different area or dungeon. Sad.

I don't feel that most Elite skills are worth using

So I guess I’m the only person who uses my elite skills regularly, huh?

Guardian- Renewed Focus (90s recharge)
Warrior- Signet of Rage (60s recharge)
Mesmer- Time Warp (210s recharge)
Thief- Stonetouch Vemon (36s recharge)

Classes I don’t use as often:
Engineer- Supply Crate
Elementalist- Fiery Greatsword or Glyph of Elementals
Necromancer- Flesh Golem
Ranger- Rampage as One

Time Warp is very situational, but the rest I use quite liberally in PvE, especially Stonetouch Venom, Flesh Golem, Signet of Rage, and Renewed Focus.

In WvW, I am a bit more stingy.

I do think we need more utility and elite skills, but if you choose not to use your elite, that’s on you.

The need to allow dodging in-place while immobilized. As it is right now, it is almost identical to a stun, especially if you are not facing the opponent.

Analysis of Professions

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Vorch.2985

As far as ranking, that may be a bit difficult. There are three modes: PvE, WvW, and sPvP.

Each class has it’s pros and cons, though, so I’ll try to address those below (All scores are out of 10):
TL;DR: Top 4- Warrior, Guardian, Mesmer, Elementalist

Warrior

  • PvE: 8; WvW: 7.5, PvP: 5
  • If you are primarily a PvE player, warriors are a great introduction: they deal damage and they deal it consistently. They also have great support options from shouts (my personal favorite) and banners. People tend to prefer banners for support. Get a greatsword.
  • In WvW, warriors tend to be very good in small groups. With hammer builds, they have the ability to stunlock opponents into submission and have amazing AoE control.
  • In sPvP, you really see a glaring issue with the warrior: they deal amazing damage, but only when the opponent stays still. They are lack luster in sPvP and you have many more viable options

Guardian
*PvE: 10; WvW: 6; sPvP: 9

  • In PvE, when you have a good guardian in your group, the entire group does better. Guardians have very viable damage and condition damage builds, but they TRULY shine in support. Wanna reflect projectiles? They got that. Wanna absorb damage for your group and heal them from the bring of defeat? They got that. Wanna take your hammer and make everyone in melee range take 1/3 LESS DAMAGE? Yup. Wanna say THOU SHALT NOT PASS with your bad kitten staff? Check check check.
  • In WvW, the guardian tends to be a mixed bag. While they can be difficult to kill, they are not going to be stopping anyone from running away. I will say that greatsword #5 is AMAZING against stealthed opponents as you can pull them right back into your party/zerg. But other than a bit more support than usual, you’re not going to make a huge dent.
  • In sPvP, Bunker Guardians are meta (along with bunker eles). You almost never enter competitively without one.

Mesmer
*PvE: 9; WvW: 10; sPvP; 9
*There’s something funny about the mesmer…they aren’t really the best at anything. There are classes that do better damage, classes that do better support, and classes that do better control. However, what’s amazing about mesmers is that they are good at doing all 3 AT THE SAME kitten TIME. I run a dodge clone-shatter clone build and I must say

  • Never forget this. In WvW; NEVER fight a mesmer alone. Ever. An below-average player will hold you to a stalemate; an average player will wear you down until he is victorious, and a good player will mop the floor with you. Clones have a HUGE intimidation factor in WvW, where split second decisions mean victory or defeat. I’ve personally held off 3-5 players alone simply by pooping clones every 2 seconds. That’s not an exaggeration.
  • Split second decisions rule sPvP and clones screw all that to hell. Also, mesmer portals WILL ruin your day.

Elementalist

  • PvE: 7; WvW: 8; sPvP: 10
  • Elementalists are the hard to play, but VERY rewarding to master. You can NOT beat their utility; they have an answer for almost every situation. Ice bows and Fiery Greatswords are useful conjured weapons in dungeons and eles also have some of the most fantastic control options in the game. Need a class that can cripple, freeze, bleed, and burn groups of foes? Check, check, check, check.
  • IMO, elementalists are better than thieves in WvW. Blasphemy, I know. However, here’s my analysis. With a staff, they can slow down entire groups, turn fortification walls in the hellscapes, and punish mindless zerging with efficiency. With dagger/dagger, they can hold mesmers to a stalemate, tank groups of enemies, and plow through single targets before they can say “skritt, i’m hit!”

*Bunker eles are sPvP meta. They hold points. Forever. Period.

Problems with Engineers and Legendaries

No need for legendary kits.

Add legendary backpack(s).

Problem solved forever.

somehow you managed to miss the fact that when an engineer swaps to a kit… his backpack is no longer visable.
Quagan, Adventure box, whatever… swap to a kit and you no longer see the backpack.

So how exactly would that solve anything? At all?

Add legendary helmet.

Problem solved forever.

Soz, haven’t use my engineer in a LONG time.
