Anyone else notice LS seems to steal defensive boons from a target first?
This I like.
Hey all, just wanted to hop in and look for a decent S/D build from some of the experts. My main focus is WvW and for a while i was using the nightblade build. No matter how I went about it I always seemed to revert to S/D in fights. I enjoy the utility and defensiveness the set can support and it reminds me fondly of my P/D bleed build in a melee aspect ((The main reason I swapped to the nightblade build to begin with))
Along with the buffs S/D will be getting i’m looking for a decent solo roamers set up.
Id prefer not focusing entirely on burst, but having relatively decent damage. I don’t want to go full buncker, but i’d love some extra D.
So if anyone has any suggestions, calculators, video’s or even basic playing tips for this set i’m quickly falling in love with, i’d be greatly appreciative.
They can have my belongings when they can stop me from punting them like the little football-heads they are.
Guess I never met the OP in the field I have never lost to a D/P thief as P/D. They could never touch me and my build FORCED them into stealth constantly, if they messed up they where toast.
A little heads up GW2 is EXTREMELY CPU intensive, BF3 on the other hand is very GPU intensive. I own a 965 BE which is in the Phenom II x4 9 Series. I used to have temps hover around 58 to 60 JUST for guild wars too due to the extra stress, I purchased a 40$ aftermarket CPU cooler for my system cause those temps drove me up the wall.
Got the little bugger to 40c while playing GW2 so that’s a really good option if you keep having thermal issues. Installing a new heatsink isn’t as scary as everyone thinks just gotta get one compatible with your socket =D
Devs have stated they’re planning to add more “Boonhate” to counter just such issues. For now i’ve fell in love with boonstripping on my sword… Just gotta wheather the storm
I am thinking about a condition trolling thief… 0/0/10/30/30
1. Believe me or not, d/d 2 without auto targeting works far better than shortbow 5 in terms of speed. With the trait “gain swiftness when dodging”, no profession can catch you except thieves and eles.
2. Stealth won’t save you from zerg or ppl that want to kill you, but good position will. There are many “scout” spots on all 4 wvw maps, you need to go into the field and find them out.
3. try d/d 2 without auto targeting when disengaging…
D/D 2 can work faster in terms of speed in certain situations. But take the ruins on the borderlands maps for an example, you can infiltrators arrow up onto the archway as long as your standing on the bridge. Or those large, holed walls leading to the supply camps on the bottem left and rights of the map? You can infiltrator arrow up to the straw roof IF you shoot at the low-joints.
Holy crap that would make us amazing, like destroy every class in the game and force them to reroll amazing.
Yes lets baseline the only defensives and utilities I use, then I can run a full signet build ALONG with it and just be god mode =D
/sarcasm
full acro full shadow 10 in trickery. SB and d/p for invis or d/d for leaping distance. shadow step. Signet of shadows. shadows refuge. hide in shadows. (no other choice) ignore the initiative signet as its garbage for this build. would u rather be invis or be running while visible? :P u cant use intiative skills and stay in stealth. best option is SS to SR to HiS to a bunch of heartseekers away. siometims its better to run thru a zerg as they wont see it coming. for instance run away a few steps while invisig then turn on them and run thru.
He’s going to need to be able to keep up with an enemy zerg if he’s looking to be a scout, in which case he will need init for infiltrator arrows so he can hug around the outside and watch them.
1: Shortbow+Init signet and init regen traits from trickery and shadow arts.
2: No such thing as long term stealth. We thieves have a cap on how much can be stacked and any attack from stealth will trigger revield, preventing stealth for a 4 second duration. Critter smacking is viable to an extent, chaining it being tricky due to the distance between them and smacking normal mobs will trigger combat speed slowing you down.
THE best you might be able to get is 18 seconds from a full shadow’s refuge stand in, letting the time tick down a bit so you don’t hit the 12 second cap on stealth. Then loading up with hide in shadows “4 seconds” and blinding powder.
3: Full acro and shadow arts line for survival. You will be uncatchable with the trickery tree’s extra ini and shortbow, along with the signet and extra ini regen in stealth, using blinding powder and hide in shadows to trigger such

Shadow trap is useful in WvW. I use it to over-extende while defending a gate.
All you have to do is have an enemy trigger it close to the side entrance, then over extended as far as possible. When things gets rough, you can activate it to instant teleport out of harm’s way.
Another trap that I like is Ambush and pulling my target into it using Scorpion Wire.
You really just have to be creative with the traps.
Yes but creative doesn’t mean effective.
You lost in market PVP take your whooping and go.
And found the reason why. I had completed cursed shore months ago and found this in the January patch notes
“Uncontested waypoints have been added to Cursed Shore and Straits of Devastation. Players that have already achieved map completion will retain it without having to discover these new waypoints.”
Sure enough down south at cursed shore I have an undiscovered waypoint but still have 100% map completion on the map…..
Hey all topic says it all, i’m stuck at 99% world completion, but strangely enough I got the reward and 2 gifts of exploration. My map still says I am missing 1 waypoint and I cannot find it, i’ve gone through every area 2 and all the major cities. Is there a secret waypoint someplace off the world map i’m missing?
Something tells me the devs like watching us do battle, why else would we be fighting for the fifth week!
Had a 22222 thief attack my P/D once in wvw. I just CnD’d and shot him in the back as he leapt off into the distance. =D
Fighting bads never gets old.
You do mean D/P right? As P/D has no heartseeker.
It’s a nice trait for sure but definitively niche. I’d love to see less burst in the game an more sustained imho, so we can have multiple procs of things like this in one fight.
I don’t personally use it but to the people who do I would love to see a reduced cooldown for you guys =D
Wow this topic blew up… Either way I notice people having questions about condition removal.
In my build I have 30 in shadow arts for embrace which, with the four second minor allows 2 conditions to be removed if you extend your stealth. Combine this with the heal while in stealth becomes more of a survival utility then straight damage.
Withdraw can heal twice in the time it takes for one HIS has no cast time ((Which has gotten me killed many times with HiS against enemies that know how to hit you with a pull or daze when they see you casting.)) And for escape Withdraw can proc vigor allowing you to backroll away from an incoming zerg and start dodge-rolling for swiftness away.
And yes there is an issue with your placement with withdraw when I first started using it I was rolling off EVERYTHING… But after a couple days of getting used to it I have not NOT rolled myself into a bad situation yet. It’s just a matter of learning the feel of the skill.
I’ve even began mid-air turning to land and set up my Withdraws.

Shouldn’t you be using Eagle or Divinity for that build and not ruby orbs?
Hey all, hopping in to ask a quick and general opinion on a certain sigil.
Now i’m a P/D condition thief and i’m relatively pvp seasoned. So in the endless struggle to optimize my character i’ve hit a conundrum.
At the moment I’m using two Sigil of Agony in my weapon, 10% bleed duration.
as well as 2 afflicted 15% bleed duration
2 centaur 15% bleed duration
2 krait 15% bleed duration.
This gives me… If my basic math is right. =P 65% bleed duration.
Now the conundrum. I wonder if it’s worth saccing 10% on a weapon for the Sigil of Corruption
((10 condition damage on kill, stacking up to 25 times. Stacks are lost on down))
The benefit is I can pre-buff the condition damage off NPC’s and creatures, the downside is it’s lost on down.
The downside to the bleed sigil is with so much condition removal in PVP I might be OVER buffing my condition duration… The plus side is the people who lack condition removal and are stuck with my lovely, lovely bleeds.
So I come to the Thief community and ask their general opinions. Damage vs Time
He’s a cake-walk.
His eyes look left, go to right lilly,
His eyes look right, go to the left lilly.
He shakes his head be ready to dodge the tongue.
He starts humping the ground get back to one of the stones.
Just watching the video preview and me and my brother where sold. I would enjoy this popping up as like a week-long event once per month.
It’s truly epic to see you guys aren’t the cold, money-grubbing MMO company most are and that you DEFINITIVELY know how to have fun.
It reminds me of this,
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lWfyf74jMvg
from my good old days of playing WoW before they where taken over by activision and their game turned to crap….
So truly, from the bottom of my heart… Thank you for still having fun Anet =D

P/D Shortbow ((Shortbow is a utility weapon, escape mechanics and AoE))
Withdraw/Caltrops/Shadow’s Refuge/Blinding powder/Thieve’s Guild.
The trick to this build is Cloak and Dagger + Sneak Attack, which stacks 5 bleeds on the target. Caltrops destroy ANY group event
Or, F, they finally created a balanced class and the bads are simply QQing the loss of their ez-mode.
I’ve played thief as main since release and plan to continue to do so. Right now, I’m in a position where it’s 50/50 when I go into a fight that I’ll be the victor, where previously it was no contest (can I really claim to be so much better than every one else playing any other class at that point in time? no.) Our class was OP, it’s now balanced.
Explain how the recent changes affected glass backstabs? The reason the Thief was considered OP…
Cause I remember reading loads of topics saying Caltrops where cutting down entire teams of enemies.
/sarcasm
=P
Don’t forget withdraw>D/P #3 to dodge, blind and keep overall pressure up.
Does this skill still root you when firing the pistol shot? I remember something being fixed about in an earlier patch but not the specifics.
I heard the root issue was fixed.
If they fix the immobile cleansing issue and make it a stun break i’d never ever ever go back
Ah I can see where it messes with placement, but being a P/D condition build i’m never “Out of range”
I’ve found it especially amazing if you’re fighting in melee. Do a dodge roll forward then instantly hit withdraw, suddenly the hostile is like “WTF?” and it buys you 2 or 3 seconds before they’re back on you.
Fun fact it’s also almost double the range of the average dodge-roll
I never realized how truly amazing this ability was, with the recent revealed change I wanted to pull just a tiny bit of stealth off my build. After looking around for a bit someone made an interesting point about withdraw so I decided to give it a try.
For defensive mobility it’s amazing, a free dodge roll that triggers vigor from the acro trait line.
It breaks the things that kill us, being locked down.
Can be used twice in the time it takes for Hide in Shadows. meaning more overall healing.
and the best part NO CAST TIME…
Honestly I guess you really gotta get out there and play with some of the abilities you don’t often use, but after a 15 minute straight fight with me vs an ele and a thief I was sold, it saved me AT LEAST 8 times that fight.
I’ve seen this before, I say good on em, zergs ruin any amount of single play and a decently sized zerg can burn down gates before defenders can even get to them. This is a blessing imho… Gonna start explaining this in my team chat…
2 thieves
5 eles
Shadow’s Refuge>Earthquake>Teleport
Why does everyone want their Charr to look like grumpy cat?
http://www.catster.com/files/original.jpg
I find her rather cute, but then I have a thing for Charr.
Was checking out the new level bonuses and noticed the anti-guard upgrades and thought to myself I can almost BARELY solo a camp now while using cooldowns, that little boost should allow me to solo cap supply camps.
What do you guys think about this bonus?
Relaxed? Lol, well for some of you maybe but for those of us who have no hope of ever completing the snowball mayhem achievements, not so much. :/
How do you have no hope for these? I’m not trying to be condescending, but I got it done in an probably less than an hour. Is it glitched for some people?
Same was about an hour or so and was done with both.
It’s because the Asura arn’t bright enough to notice the snow already there,.. =3
I passed around my 35th try, having a crap GFX card made it difficult… But not impossible. It’s alot easier then the clocktower.
The counter to stealth, then, is to minimize the innate benefits of stealth by tracking/anticipating and attacking the stealthed player, and maximize the innate detriments of stealth by not allowing the thief to get “free” combat downtime and actually have to make the choice to remain in stealth for the benefits.
In short, if you stay aggressive and continue to attack your opponent while they’re stealthed, you’ve just turned stealth from an advantage to them to a disadvantage to them. They can’t attack you while stealthed or risk losing the benefits, but you can attack all you want. They’re essentially dazing themselves for 2-3 seconds at a time.
People believe stealth is so powerful because they often let the stealthed player simply get “free” time with no applied pressure to do whatever they want. Against an intelligent player stealth becomes a choice and potential liability where you trade the ability to attack for some benefits, a major tradeoff.
Yeah, man, just keep swinging at the air. That really turns stealth into a disadvantage for a player who’s already long gone.
Thieves in stealth cannot be attacked reliably with ranged attacks because they can’t be targeted. They also can’t be attacked reliably with melee attacks because all it takes is a single dodge roll to move out of melee range. Being unable to attack for the duration of stealth isn’t much of a disadvantage since you aren’t really getting hit during that time.
In a fight against a thief, you’re fighting on their terms, no matter what. If things aren’t looking so great for them, leaving is effortless.
Thieves should get the Revealed debuff if either they attack or are hit when in stealth.
Breaking stealth on damage, is a massive nerf. AoE and channeled abilities hit in stealth VERY easily. Shots already in the air when the thief stealth still hit. And there have been numerous times I’ve shot at air and watched a thief come out with bleeds on him.
Not to mention any sort of bleed, burning or poison would INSTANTLY break stealth. Thieves only have ONE condition remover involving stealth. ((Unless traiting))
Also in closing it seems like there are ALOT of WoW players here who want stealth to act just like Rogue’s stealth.
I’m also tired of thieves’ stealth culling issue, but this “removing stealth by damage” is completely nonsense.
Why don’t we get completely rid of stealth since this kind of adjustment would make stealth useless?
Stealth should stay, that’s what makes thieves a thief. Also, removing stealth by damage shouldn’t be an option, instead of that, there should be other solutions to this problem.
why? most other pvp games reveal stealthed when damaged, including dark age.
Because just about EVERY class has a channel skill that continues to hit after going into stealth. People would soon learn. “Hostile thief, spam the channel spell HE WILL NEVER STEALTH” Not to mention fighting a staff necro would be IMPOSSIBLE. Mark and you can’t get close.
On another note, most games have permastleath that breaks on damage, this is not the case here, stealth lasts 3 seconds, 4 if traited down shadow arts. Fix culling and you fix stealth. Adjusting stealth while culling is still in play is like placing a bandaid on an arterial bleed.
untrue. because of culling bugs, thieves can remain permanently stealthed. I encourage those of you tired of dying to permanently invisible enemies to give daily feedback to anet.
As I said.
" Fix culling and you fix stealth. Adjusting stealth while culling is still in play is like placing a bandaid on an arterial bleed."
You said it yourself, culling is bugged, fix it and you fix stealth
In reality Thief stealth never last 3-4 seconds. Add the heal, cloak and dagger plus Blinding Powder (if used). Also, Shadow Refuge pulses, you can stack your own stealth high if you stay in the field for long enough (and if people are silly enough not to AE the stealth field).
Is this more of a shot at not being able to get a kill as the thief runs? Or something else.
If the thief burns all of those he now no longer has ANY slot skills for a fight with you, no condition removal from hide in shadows. Immobile, don’t get close so you take a CnD and zerg the lowest HP pool class in the game to the floor.

Hey all, just took my buddies through Tixx’s 2nd stop Divinity’s reach and I wanted to take them through the grove two, any way to reaccess it?
Yep you can get more then one as long as the first survives till the internal cooldown on the trait is up, you’ll get another one on the next kill.
Running apothecary+ full blood magic+ marks of blood they only lose about 2 HP a tick when I get regen on them. Yes mobs still smack them like paper, but that means i’m not taking the hits. Then if they start to get low well of bloood + regen from mark of blood usually has the little buggers topped off by the end of the duration.
The max i’ve had up at one time is 5, then it got tricky managing the different and depleting HP pools. With adequet enemies I can have one up almost 99% of the time.
4) Still playing and enjoying the hell out of my bloodmage, my guild now always leaves a slot open for my heals, condition purge and signet of undeath, sometimes even kicking pugs to get me in.
With the slight change to reanimator’s minion degeneration it feels slightly less useless. Being wells/marks healing I can now keep four to five of my rabid hamsters up in dungeons and I am learning to love their creepy little faces and auto attack bleed.
Quicker minion target acusition, and better control of my hamsters and ill start feeling like a real bloodmage/necromancer again.
You guys do know petitions are against the forums rules.
Do not post petitions, “I demand an answer” threads, conspiracy threads, or comments about circumventing the rules.
Might be why the other one was ignored. =P
Insanely useful for insta breaking backstabbers. Can’t back stab me if you can’t get to me, oh your up against me again 3 bye bye
~Tinfoil hat~
Because Anet is manipulating the market, I don’t blame them, it’s good business, look how juicy it is to dump that 20$ in gems right now and sell them for insane amounts of gold, my buddy has been doing it since they prices skyrocketed.
I dislike these “Ninja” fixes to the game, not because they are being fixed but because Anet is hiding and playing sneaky sneaky with patch notes. Being dishonest and or hiding things from the player base is not good and will simply breed distrust down the line, even for something as tiny as these.
Ack, if one wasn’t bad enough… I gotta listen to two?
Plain and simple EVERYONE want’s the “Cool black sword.” Look at the price of Abyss dye, there is your price difference.
Was this within the span of a second. Since combat log doesn’t track time it may have been a backstab ((Wait for revealed)) then an instant stealth like blinding powder or such, due to culling this may have looked like one stealth. Either way it looks buggy or hacky, been seeing more and more hacks in WVW found a speed-hacking ranger the other day, still killed him but the guy zipped around in laggy jump around fashion
