Just a quick question: does compounding power increase damage dealt by phantasms too or only by the mesmer? Ty
Only the Mesmer.
Angry Intent [AI] | Yak’s Bend |
Oh my
Angry Intent [AI] | Yak’s Bend |
Keep in mind that with culling gone, it seems you can see farther distances now and make out the red invaders tag a lot easier. It is a lot harder for Mesmers to hide anywhere now than it was in the past.
Angry Intent [AI] | Yak’s Bend |
Like the guy below you said. It is easy to spot. The abilities are blatantly obvious when they are going off. Me thinks you guys are not doing actual mesmer/thief sweeps because you are too lazy, so you come here to complain.
You mean like the ledges and cubbies in the cliff wall of bay that are high up out of LOS and you have to jumping puzzle to? (but they can see you coming because they DO have LOS) Is it obvious there? How about spots that provide you no LOS on them but they can see you coming a mile away in Hills? Is it obvious like that? What about animation draw distance, yes it’s happening but how far away can I see it from? (See references to some of the out of the way spots without LOS from your end, but they have LOS to you)
Good teams can see you coming before you see them and then act accordingly. The spots chosen are well suited to it. Videos showing people do it in plain sight of others are videos done by folks who were either lazy or rookies. Ironically this still works a good portion of the time since even once found you have to chase them down with a multitude of people, these folks are built to run/hide/survive after all. You have to invest quite a bit more to kill them than they do to make you need to kill them.
The reason this seems like an easy counter to alot of people is usually one of two things:
1. They are a mesmer or thief trying to protect their tactic.
2. You simply don’t know about alot of these clever hiding spots that provide all of the advantages to the people hiding. Back in the day they used to be able to glitch into walls (I’m talking terrain walls not keep walls even) and stuff so you couldn’t see them period. But it was still “fine” to a great many mesmers.
I could easily list out multitudes of spots like those mentioned, spots that mesmers don’t want you to know about. But I think that should be enough to make my point.
Those hiding spots in the cliffs at south bay were fixed patches ago. Just saying.

Unless there is population balancing on maps, there will be no way to equalize match-ups.
Angry Intent [AI] | Yak’s Bend |
Do we really need a TLDR version for three sentences? What is this world coming too?
I guess we do.
TLDR: Yes
Angry Intent [AI] | Yak’s Bend |
Is that a mouse in your pocket or are you just glad to down me?
Angry Intent [AI] | Yak’s Bend |
Use a Phantasm build. 20/20/0/25/5
Works great for me.
Angry Intent [AI] | Yak’s Bend |
How about adding passive swiftness to Decoy? It is an often used utility in wvw and spvp.
Angry Intent [AI] | Yak’s Bend |
Is superior sigil of Leeching on Staff worth it? I have always preferred sup. sigil of Might on both weapon swaps for the 6 stacks of might.
How much life does it really steal and give to you?
Angry Intent [AI] | Yak’s Bend |
In my opinion, it is more of a pvp trait than pve and therefore working as it should.
For example, if you pop Decoy then dodge roll with or without a target, your clone will aggro the closest enemy which is generally what you want to happen and helps with the illusion of the clone being you.

Yak’s Bend is a pretty stable server. We haven’t had any mass influxes of server transfers either in or out and most of our wvw has been spent in T3. We are pretty much the gatekeepers of T3 and higher.
Angry Intent [AI] | Yak’s Bend |
I think you need to get to 80 and try some builds before posting what you think might be good. The build you posted isn’t very good.
And why not level both a Mesmer and a Thief?
Angry Intent [AI] | Yak’s Bend |
Who’s to say that the servers in T4, T5, T6, T7 and T8 are not having more fun than T1 or T2 servers ?
This.
Angry Intent [AI] | Yak’s Bend |
Cleric Power Bow Regeneration is one of -if not the- strongest WvW builds the class has. Just keep in mind you might get board really fast from being so OP.
What build is that? I need a cleric’s ranged build now that I have my BM Bunker build completed.
Angry Intent [AI] | Yak’s Bend |
Trebbing SM walls from afar shouldn’t make the waypoint inaccessible, imo. Only an actual attack. Like, enemy at the gates sort of thing. Seems pointless to even have a wp there most of the time, as usually someone is taking potshots from long range.
Am I wrong?
Yes.
SM should be hard to hold and manage. By holding SM, having a waypoint there is a huge advantage. You can also pretty much treb most enemy structures on the map.
However the cost is that you also become a target by the other two opponents and it is very costly and difficult to defend.
Having SM’s waypoint being contested by treb fire is balanced.
Angry Intent [AI] | Yak’s Bend |
You cannot farm Karka shells in WvW so this wouldn’t work.
Angry Intent [AI] | Yak’s Bend |
I think every Mag uses /laugh emote, even when they 20v1. Mad skills.
Angry Intent [AI] | Yak’s Bend |
I run this build in dungeons/fractals and it works very well.
Angry Intent [AI] | Yak’s Bend |
Greatsword Master mostly. The reduction in CD’s on GS plus it’s not always easy on every boss fight to keep 3 illusions up which would reduce the benefit of compounding power.
Angry Intent [AI] | Yak’s Bend |
I generally have no problem with this. Any time I’m facing more than one opponent, my clones keep the heat off of me while I focus on the target. I’ve done this while soloing the champion effigy that spawns in the event that unlocks the Citadel of Flame and I’m able to hold all the adds on my own too. In fact, my biggest worry is falling off the edge because I can’t get back fast enough to stop the event from failing.
This.
Also imagine a thief who unstealths to hit you while you are DPSing a different target. I dodge roll to create a clone on the thief. I don’t want to dodge roll and put a clone on my target in this example.
Angry Intent [AI] | Yak’s Bend |
This is what i run on Phantasm build for wvw or when bored of spamming shatter in dungeons.
10/25/0/25/10
Domination: Empowered Illusions
Dueling: Phantasmal Fury, Deceptive Evasion (to have three illusions permanently up)
Inspiration: Persisting Images (don’t like this one so run Glamour Mastery instead often), Temporal Enchanter (especially when running Glamour Mastery)
Illusions: Compounding Power in this one is a no brainer.
I think 20/20/0/25/5 is stronger for dungeons. The extra 5 in dueling seems like a waste and the extra 10 in domination is more powerful than Compounding Illusions in my opinion.
Angry Intent [AI] | Yak’s Bend |
Scepter and Torch for PvE are pretty terrible when compared to the alternatives. Scepter is actually pretty powerful until about lvl 7-10, after that, it gets much weaker.
Even with the current bug to p.berzerker, Greatsword is still viable due to the AoE that Skill #1 (which attacks almost 3x per second) puts out. Stand next to inanimate objects (e.g. last boss in CoF for example) and you can DPS the boss while the AoE slowly destroys the crystals. And as already mentioned here, target a mob in the back and any others between you and that target will take damage.
Don’t forget that GS#5 Push does damage too and helps to tag mobs.
Scepter really needs a buff to make it viable in all but a few certain builds. The only reason to take Scepter in PvE is for those few encounters where you really have to stay at range the whole time. Torch is just terrible for PvE period.
Angry Intent [AI] | Yak’s Bend |
My build is almost the same but instead 5 in illusions i put 5 more in dueling for the crit. 5 more in inspiration is also a good alternative.
Indeed, 5 in illusions to reduce illusion cd is not cumulative with 20% gs sword or focus reduction so it works only for 7 8 & 9 if you have illusion skills.
5 in Illusions > 5 more in Precision in my opinion.
And I run this build in Fractals and it works great. I do however swap out Focus for Pistol (and change a few traits) on the go for certain encounters.
Angry Intent [AI] | Yak’s Bend |
The OP was in the Mesmer forums today asking to have Phantasm builds nerfed. Now he is here asking for Thief bunker builds to be nerfed. What class will he QQ next?
Angry Intent [AI] | Yak’s Bend |
I have also noticed the 1 sec lag in activating this skill but I thought it was just server lag or something.
Angry Intent [AI] | Yak’s Bend |
Its only happen a few times. The time I was referring to the guy had about 4 clones/phantasms going. I was pinned between the environment and the enemy siege fire line. The Mesmer was a few feet away so I switched to melee weapons, and took a step towards him. He disappears the clones all explode, my hp goes from full to about dead I use my heal to try and recover the confusion kills me.
So he shattered his illusions and you took a lot of damage. Working as intended just like any other class. I’ve had warriors down me in less than 3 seconds with their hard hitting abilities. You also should have noticed confusion on you and removed it before healing or waiting it out.
Xavi your two posts have been reported. You honestly sound like the guy who tells everyone what a UFC fighter should be doing during his match. You sound like the guy who says yeah if this guy would have just done this he would have won.
Xavi I have already given the stats of my main WvW character above.
So just because you don’t like the answers you are hearing on the Mesmer forums, you start reporting? Get real. Your posts are so full in misinformation about the Mesmer class and some of your other experiences are so dated (December?) that the class has been nerfed multiple times since then.
Any class can beat any other class on any given day. Like I said, rather than creating a QQ thread (which you did), you could have come here asking for help on how to beat a Mesmer. You could also post in your own class forums on how to beat a Mesmer. Even better, roll one to find out how they work and the strengths and weaknesses.
Thanks for the report.
Angry Intent [AI] | Yak’s Bend |
Mesmers seem to consistently be on the receiving end of nerfs, along with thieves. I think its because any class that functions by making their opponent unsure of what is going on seems OP to the confused.
One minute they are like “huh?” and the next they are dead. However, like any magic trick, once you understand how the trick works it’s not so special anymore.
Except the last ‘nerf to thieves’ actually made them stronger. Go figure.
Angry Intent [AI] | Yak’s Bend |
To Xavi
Mesmers sure can portal: through walls, up mountains, underwater you name it. All they need to do is get behind enemies lines to move the whole team past two zergs facing off against one another, at a hole in some base.
My key point is we have to get on the other side to do the portal. If we cannot get on the other side of the wall, we cannot port there.
I would suggest you roll a Mesmer and learn how they play. This is good advice for any class that you have trouble with. You can also ask on your own professions forums on how to beat a class.
Are you underleveled? Are you a glass cannon?
Angry Intent [AI] | Yak’s Bend |

Clones and the Mesmer are no longer distinguishable from one another. Anet worked real hard to make sure those clones would be mistaken for the real deal and they now are constantly.
You can tell the difference.
Every couple of seconds here is another clone with 2K+ hp that has the potential to take an unreasonable amount of HP from your/my character’s hp pool with a swinging sword attack, or by just exploding once they are close to you/me.
Clones really do no damage other than Shatter or Bleeds (if traited).
He can veil (stealth) himself and all team members for several seconds.
So what. Every class has unique abilities that others wish they had.
When you do find the Mesmer he can just stealth, and shatter all of his clones at the same time. Your full hp pool (even if its at: 19,000, with 3,354 Armor, and a -10% to damage signet) will be gone in 1 second. And if you want to use a single skill to save yourself, guess what you have 5+ stacks of confusion. Any skill you use will deal an unreasonable amount of damage to yourself. This is damage that the Mesmer does not have to produce himself, his opponent literary will produce the damage for the Mesmer to himself.
A Mesmer isn’t going to do 19k damage just with a Shatter. Confusion was nerfed and now it tickles. If you die to confusion now, you’re bad.
He can mass haste himself and all of his clones, and all party members. As if the clone damage wasn’t enough. With this spell he doubles the speed at which he can produce clones doubling his damage. Not only that but the clones get haste also essentially doubling their damage as well.
Really…? Time Warp was already nerfed and it gets less and less use all the time.
He can portal himself and party members through walls. I understand that every class was designed or perhaps forced to have their own unique flare, but this one combined with all the other abilities I mentioned just seems to much.
Mesmer’s cannot portal through walls.
Angry Intent [AI] | Yak’s Bend |
Phantasm builds are powerful 1v1 but not as good when facing multiple opponents, where Shatter is better. You can also negate the mesmer from spawning phantasms.
Angry Intent [AI] | Yak’s Bend |
It’s a shame focus sucks for roaming, solo and small groups unless you’re using a shatter build. The phantasm just doesn’t do enough damage otherwise due to it being stationary.
I end up feeling naked without the reflect temporal curtain in big fights, and naked without a better offhand when I run into a group of 2-3 I might otherwise be able to handle if I had my staff+sw/sw setup.
There is a youtube video on how to immobolize with warden but I can’t find it at the moment. Maybe someone else can link it.
But basically it is:
Cast Temporal Curtain
Cast Warden and quickly cast Into the Void before Warden spawns
Use Sword 3 then Sword 3 again to Leap
(Bonus) Be standing where your Temporal Curtain was before using Sword 3 twice for double retaliation
Your opponent will be knocked down, pulled and immobilized while warden spawns on him and you do major damage.
It does take practice. Try it on PvE mobs.
Angry Intent [AI] | Yak’s Bend |
Is there a specific Phant build are we talking about in general?
Angry Intent [AI] | Yak’s Bend |
I portalled a player’s 6 characters up to the EBJ jumping puzzle one day and he gave my 5g.
Angry Intent [AI] | Yak’s Bend |
This goes for any runes where you want to maintain the 6th rune ability/damage/etc.
Angry Intent [AI] | Yak’s Bend |
WoW Anet.
No fix to P. Berzerker?
No fix to Scepter skill #1 confusion?
No Winds of Chaos fix for clones?
Good job.
Angry Intent [AI] | Yak’s Bend |
I no like shield. I like MH Pistol. We are duelists after all.
Angry Intent [AI] | Yak’s Bend |
Very nice. Only criticism is to keybind your skills!
Angry Intent [AI] | Yak’s Bend |
Bow would suck. We need another 1 handed ranged weapon as scepter is all we have. Give me MH pistol.
Angry Intent [AI] | Yak’s Bend |
Maybe. This might weaken my Staff + Sword/Torch (0/20/30/0/20) build though as my clones will cause my opponent to bleed while I go invisible.
Angry Intent [AI] | Yak’s Bend |
…and then there was nothing and another fine thread faded away into obscurity.
Angry Intent [AI] | Yak’s Bend |
I agree with this suggestion. Remove PvDoors. Also, buff Flame Ram HP slightly.
Angry Intent [AI] | Yak’s Bend |
Your entry and exit portals are too far apart.
Angry Intent [AI] | Yak’s Bend |
It’s not broken. The mechanics rule for Blink is that you may teleport only to the location to which your character can run to without jumping and there is no obstacle between you and the target spot.
TLDR: you can only blink to the spot to which you can run to in a straight line without jumping.
It’s not a bug. It’s a feature.
That’s not exactly true as I often blink up cliffs that you cannot run up in a straight line. For example, the ones just outside the east gate at Bay in any borderland.
General rule of thumb that I use, if you can run there within 10 sec or less, you can usually blink there. There are exceptions though.

I use www.bandicam.com which is a fraps alternative. The free version (which I use) allows you to record up to 10 minute videos but it does leave a watermark at the top of the screen. The paid version removes the watermark and allows infinite length recordings.
It works very well.
Angry Intent [AI] | Yak’s Bend |
It almost always glitches if your opponent is at a higher elevation than you, even just slightly.
