Thanks for bringing that up. My heart broke all over again. Whatever happened to the game promised in that video? I was beyond excited for that. But that’s not what we got.

This feels just like a big breakup.

Only without make-up s**. I really, really hope a.net pulls their kitten together, nerf the crap of this gear by making it available through upgrading exotics and not make such mistakes again.

I really, really love this game, almost as much as my own girlfriend. I would really hate to stop playing it.

That won’t fix everything.

Too bad its bind on acquire. I don’t care if you don’t need it until level 99. The point is RNG is bad game design.

And how many games have you designed? How many classes have you taught on the subject? How many books have you had published on game design?

Every MMo, Rpg, A-Rpg, several popular RTS and FPS, and most kittening board games rely heavily on random number generation or random procedural occurrence.

You may want to educate yourself a bit on games, game theory, design principles, standard practices, and even historical evolution of game design.

Because something isn’t to your liking doesn’t mean it’s bad design, especially when that particular mechanic is so prevalent to core game design itself that there are workshops during programming and design conventions to discuss the best way to make random more random.

RNG based loot, that is required for future content, is bad game design. That’s why most games got rid of it. And don’t come to me with your pseudo intellectual BS.

Why was the title changed? It wasn’t offensive and its true that RNG exist for essences.

Huh most games got rid of RNG based loot? like which? dont know a single MMO that doesnt have RNG based loot! can you give some examples please?

Most games don’t have RNG based gear progression. My bad for not being clear. You know, they give you tokens instead of random based drops? Even if this wasn’t true, it would still be bad game design because it leads to wasted time. I quit AoC because I got the same Raid belt 3 time when what I need was a helm

The post I quoted from you didn’t say you hated dungeons. It said “forced to grind” for the purposes of keeping up with everyone else.

I pointed out that there are lots of activities that players can grind for an advantage over players that don’t. And I asked if you felt “forced” to do those. Because if you don’t then it’s just being hypocritical. You were deliberately ignoring all of those other factors to shine light on the one you have the latest problem with.

Also, WvW always devolves to running with a zerg or standing on a wall raining AOE. Dress it up as much as you like to feel you are doing something more unique, but that’s what the mode breaks down to.

And the devs have already told us, more than once I believe, that the items will also be available in WvW for the people that spend most of their time there. If you decide you cant get it fast enough that way and need to grind a dungeon for it, that’s your prerogative. But like other posters have mentioned, nothing is forcing you to do anything…except maybe your own feelings of pixel inadequacy in an imaginary rat-race.

When will they be available in wvwvw, and why weren’t they available in WvWvW from day one? Yes, if I am to enjoy the game, I am forced to do this nonsense. You are incorrect.

Isn’t it obvious? They are trying to funnel people into content now as well.

ANET is gambling that these people will spend money in the cash shop. They also are gambling that people won’t eventually get bored of grinding for these gear.

The people who are quitting this game over the changes likely don’t like WoW or Rift. We don’t like Gated content nor do we like gear treadmills

That said, the fractals is actually pretty good; however, it gets old quick. I’m already board with them and I’m only level 6.

Futhermore, do you really think its a good game design to make gear tied to RNG?

And why would I want to play GW2 in the future if I know that I’m going to be left behind and blocked from doing content because I don’t have the armor to complete it?

Not only should there be a cap but, it should also reset every week. At this rate the community will be so segregated that no one will be able to find people to play with.

If there is a cap and its low, it doesn’t need to reset weekly. If it reset weekly, then its not progression. Not going to happen

I love how you call anyone with a different opinion than you a “vocal minority locust”.

I never asked for this change, I was enjoying the game quite as bit as it was. I’m sure that’s the case for many of the people you refer to as “locusts”. That doesn’t mean we’re not going to enjoy the hell out of a new tier of equipment.

You need to learn to not take life so seriously. Or games for that matter. This new tier of equipment isn’t going to break the game. A game which I might add has only been out for THREE months. They never made a promise that exotic(easy as hell to get) gear was going to be the final stage. So you have to actually do some work if you want to have ascended gear. Buck up kiddo. Expecting to never have anything to progress towards at only 3 months in the game was just stupid on your(and many others) part.

What you don’t get, is that we could of gotten progression without

1) Content gating
2) New gear with better stats
3) New gear, with better stats, not tied to RNG
4) New gear, with better stats, that requires more than 60hrs to obtain

OP, guess what, you miss the point of why people are quitting. Its two fold

1) Most people who are quitting didn’t want a game to hold a candle to WoW. That would imply they liked WoW’s game design, that of being a gear treadmill, content gating, etc

2) A lot of people are coming to the forums to voice their disgust with the changes because This isn’t the game they advertised. It goes against their game philosphy. People feel lied to.

Today’s event was about discovering a new zone.

We held the enemy at bay while NPCs cleared forests, erected defenses, built new bases and waypoints before our very eyes. We saw bridges being constructed to new areas while we held off wave after wave of enemies, pushing the line of scrimmage deeper into this untamed wild land.

We had to actively help create this new zone, it was not just sitting there waiting for us.

Those whose focus is loot only will only see loot from the event.
The rest of us partook in an epic adventure and saw Tyria change in front of our very eyes.

I missed it because its 6:32 PM monday for me right now

I would go back to Guild Wars 1, but it doesn’t look like many people play it anymore. I just got Chivalry: Midieval Warfare and that is the most fun I’ve had in a game in a long time. I’ll also be checking out SC2: HoTS and CoH 2, but I won’t be going to another MMO. Can’t stand most MMOs, Guild Wars 1 was the exception.

GW1 wasn’t an MMO. It was a CoOp rpg. And you can’t stand Themepark MMOs. Try some of the sandbox MMORPGS that are coming out/are out/in-beta. It might strike your fancy.

It’s beginning to feel like a game that was supposed to have content and quality experiences driving player participation has devolved into loot driving player participation. Is it being designed that way?

Yes, because the vast amount of people who play MMOs don’t care about content, they care about shinies. ANET is trying to cater to them instead of being a niche game, which, as my friend said, is exactly what they should do since they sold over 2million copies.

This isn’t the case . RPGs are about story and character progression. In most RPG, outside the MMO space, you hit max level eventually. It wasn’t until EQ that MMORPGs became about gear and not some other character progression mechanic.

I agree it was bad reasoning on my part to assume that they would not release armor pieces that are also ascended, likewise though one should not assume that they will release ascended armor gear.

It’s not an assumption. They’ve specifically said that they plan to release “full sets” of Ascended gear.

Apologies, I probably should of read the ascended gear announcement more carefully. As for what I think you are implying agony as a gating mechanic, it is a very mild one there are definitely ones that you cannot avoid, however upon reaching level 10(and probably 20) and beating it you are rewarded with a ascended ring that will help with progression. This probably does not jibe well with your if one person completes a certain difficulty everyone should be able to join them in that higher difficulty, but I also do not agree this is a proper solution since loot is better at higher fractal difficulties and people that are willing to invest more time into FotM should be rewarded for their dedication.

Future content will use the agony system. It seems like Dungeons may be closed of to the casual community from this point forward.

Xpiher.5209

RNG grinding is one of my most hated “features” of MMOs. Especially when the grind revolves around an upgrade item. When it comes to GW2, it feels like a step backwards in design.

If it’s any consolation, there is a pretty painless way to solo grind for the essence. Get your magic find gear and go into FotM. You need the swamp fractal, the one with all the traps. Now just continuously kill the mosquitoes, fireflies and spiders there. The respawn rate is pretty fast so you’re basically constantly moving, with very little downtime. I just did it for about an hour and it dropped from a firefly for me.

Now I need 60g+ for the 250 vials of powerful blood and about 10g for the ectos. Those are the bigger grind.

You just screwed everything up by posting it on the forums. Expect that to be nerfed next week :lamo:

They’re already losing more than just GW1 fans.

Called this when the update was announced.

I’ve done the new instances now several times since yesterday and honestly see some issues. While it isn’t crazy difficult and it is “FUN” I can see plenty of people getting frustrated and bailing. Happened to me several times now with one run through the swamp a utter failure. Anger and bailing until we got tired of trying to get more people in. Swamp may be a rarity here, but the escavation one isn’t much grander, you know?

All this means is that every group will require a mesmer. But the swamp really isn’t that hard. If you group can’t get through it then there are other issues.

I’m at level 2 and I can only imagine how much more difficult it gets and what happens to those groups. You know what this reminds me of if truth be told? It reminds me of DaOC’s Trials of Atlantis expansion and the master level grind. 10 master levels each with rewarding a new skill. It was mandatory if you wanted to be doing any form of pvp realm vs. realm you had to have master levels.

I don’t see it getting actually harder. All thats going to happen is that the runs are going to take more time. The reason I say that is because all reports say that the mechanics of the areas doesn’t change, only the amount of mobs, HP of bosses, and number of adds increases. Then throw on the Agony system and it turns into a “mitigate damage” rush. YAWN

I think the worst part of fractals is that the level available is only as high as the person who’s progressed the least…. to me this is a surefire way to get people left behind.

Thats the point, because progress isn’t about “I finally did it,” but instead “I’m better than you.” And if you can skip levels, whats the point of having a leveling system in the first place?

Dude…everything is RNG. Ecto for crafting high level stuff comes from random rare drops, T6 mats come from random mob drops, even if you buy those things it was from stuff you sold and the most profitable were still chance drops.

And from the recipes I have seen, you only need one essence to craft a Ascended item. You also get an ascended ring as a reward for beating level 10.

srsly. Just play the game and you will end up with what you need eventually. Every one I have been doing fractals with found in essence in the first 1-8 levels. But even if they didn’t find one until lvl 15, they still didn’t need it sooner than that because Agony isn’t a huge factor yet.

Too bad its bind on acquire. I don’t care if you don’t need it until level 99. The point is RNG is bad game design.

Gonna play a white knight’s role this time. You don’t have to do those dungeons. You have plenty of other content to do. They might be a little deserted but you can always bring your friends/guildies! That’s the beauty of the game without a necessary grind and whole game being the endgame.

Except none of the other content gives you Ascended gear, which will be required to do future content.

IMO, it seems like most dungeons in the future will rely on Agony and gating, while the rest of the community will be left to squander in open world.

I’ve yet to start running the new Fractals, but I’m not too concerned because I know my guild will help me out. If you don’t have access to a guild, you could always try to start your own lower difficulty group..

With the way it’s implemented now I wouldn’t count on that too much unless you’re willing to be on a lot. The ideas of levels is well designed with the exception of locking to the LOWEST member in the party. If your guild has been at it all day and you get on they will have to spend an extra 2 hours per level running content they’ve been through in order to get you up to speed.

Luckily there is a quick fix for them if this if it becomes a real issue:
“Patch note XXX: FOTM now sets the level being entered to the level highest in the group.”

Except that goes against progression

Guys ANET had to make money, even if they had to throw out their manifesto to do it. I’m a casual player with a lvl 80 character without any exotic gear. The new update is not for me.
I just play the way I want to play and not the game ANET wants me to play. I’ve no interest in grinding gear and if that’s what it takes to do the Fractals dungeon then kitten FOTM.
I haven’t paid a cent more that the box price and as far as I’m concerned I got my money’s worth. I’m not going to pay anything else cause this game is not worth it for me. Especially with the latest update. So I’m going to enjoy doing my own thing till something else comes out.

You do realize that by not grinding the fractals you will miss content in the future and be even worse in WvW right?

Might want to edit it to exotic<ascended and the stat difference really isn’t that big of a deal if you just add it up taking into account exotics can be socketed with runes/gems.

Before someone comes in raging that the accessories are better please note that there are 6 pieces of gear that are not accessories which when socketed with runes make up the difference in stats, thanks.

Execpt you don’t know that because
1) You don’t know how Ascended bonuses will be added to Armor pieces
2) You don’t know how much more defense Ascended armor will have
3) You don’t know how Ascended armor will have stats rolled into them inherently

ANET is not going to reset Fractal levels because it goes against their new progression system. The only thing you can hope for is that, eventually, Dungeons that use Agony won’t be the only place to get Ascended gear.

It would be interesting to see what would happen if a large enough block of anti-grinders collected onto 1 server.

I keep hearing from people that this grind and increased gear is optional. They are right! ANet isn’t forcing us to grind for gear to get the increased stats. That is a player decision. I would say most of the pressure is from the community on each server.

No its not. Its the fact that Ascended buffs are going to be required FOR FUTURE CONTENT.

Ahhh, so the solution would be to make it possible for Infusion based gear to be buyable from other players. I mean it would still require you to grind in some way (which we do anyways, for money or for fun) but would still allow people who do not want to run dungeons to remain viable.

Thanks for the insight guys.

I find it surprising so many people are opposed to having more stuff to do in a game though lol. I think i get the picture tho.

Yes, thats one way to help fix the issue. The other thing that needs to be done is to make ascend gear drop EVERYWHERE. That way, content isn’t gated in an unreasonable manner.

I am not all for the accended gear and all either. However, I try to work within the system ankittenrying to give it a try like it or not.

I like the concept of the new dungeon. Kind of neat and all, however, and this is a big however, is that I am having a tough time trying to get a group together. I am still level 1. Have not had much time to play this weekend. The issue is people asking for higher levels so they do not have to go back down again. To me this is the biggest issue with that dungeon.

I spent an hour trying to get a group yesterday and was not able to. I am a level 80 with full exotics and am an engineer( which already hurts against me). With not being able to play from the get go, people now are in the upper levels and they do not want to go back and help anyone out. Some say join a guild. I am in a guild, however, 80% of the guild as quit because of some of these issues which pretty much leaves me alone again.

I though well I can wait it out a week until they reset. Well I guess I found out they they will not reset which means anyone trying to do this dungeon later is pretty much out of luck.

I am trying to work with what they gave us and unfortuntely with this type of dungeon system, it will pretty much leave me out of it because that is the nature of the beast with this type of set up. Get behind, fall behind and left out.

Which is even worse than wow because you just got left behind a lot faster. The intention of only releasing a few items at a time was to make the treadmill slower. Too bad they added levels, with increasing loot, to the dungeon as well. Doesn’t help that doing anything lower than level 10 is useless once you get there because the daily at level 10 gives you an ascended ring LOL

BY THE TIME AGONY IS EVEN RELEVENT YOU HAVE RAN FRACTALS ENOUGH TO BE ABLE TO CRAFT INFUSIONS with the exception of Karka Shells (which ANet) expects players to play in the new lands.

By the time Agony is relevant, you’ll NEVER have the mats to craft an ascended back piece unless you were rich to begin with. Infusions need a piege of gear to be socketed into you know?

On that note, everyone reading the forums make sure you buy your karka shells when you get home while they are cheap.

and back pieces actually drop in the dungeon, I had one drop today.

Ascended ones? I’ve gotten yellow

Fractals are simply raids reinvented. You don’t just have hard mode but various levels, endless if needed. The fractals gives variation because you will have 3 random ones each session, but in not too much time people will know them. The variety will be of limited time again.

I’m only level 6 and I’m pretty sure I’ve done every mini-dungeon

I’d agree with you regarding the optional part before this patch. The fractals (the living statue one in particular) requires some ability to do these puzzles (admittedly it isn’t that hard but it is still there). This is coming from someone who likes these puzzles. But I can see how some people would be annoyed by this.

Umm, no…? There isn’t any aspect of jumping puzzle in the fractals. Walking small planks and avoiding air blast =/= jump puzzle.

A loyal fanbase created by trust from the developers who understand what their aimed audience would like to see in the gem shop.

This. And the game isn’t FTP its B2P with a cash shop. Cash shop games that aren’t P2W rely heavily on casuals. This new system is anti-casual since the new gear requires a huge time investment: skill doens’t make you get through the dungeons any faster, essences are random drops (RNG FTL), and to get rings you need to be level 10+ (community segregation).

It will be FTP if I don’t spend any more money into it.

And shut down if no one spends money on it. The servers don’t work the same way they did in GW1.

I said sigh because the rumor is persisting even though the devs directly said there won’t be a reset. If you aren’t level 10-20 by next week good luck finding a group.

ANET gated this content to force people to take more time to get ascended pieces. Since, unless you are lucky, you have to be at least level 10 before getting an essence thats another 10hrs+ added to time investment. Then, since all the items require at least 24 skill points, 50 ecto, and 250 t6 matts thats more time spent getting everything. You can buy skill points for tokens from the dungeon, so that helps. But gift of ascension is 500 tokens, so thats even more time (need it to infuse the back pieces and rings after you get them)

Confirmed: level 10 daily gives you

http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Adelbern%27s_Royal_Signet_Ring The only reason to do lower level than you are at is for the daily dungeon to get the ring (the jade sea one)

I feel there is "RNG" for essence and I disagree with it

Starting yesterday I’ve probably spent 10+ hours doing these, and finally got my first essence today. Word is better drops the higher you go, but honestly I don’t buy that. Add in the fact you need 250 of the tier 6 crafting mats for an item and I’m seriously not going to waste my time.

How do you know that’s the only way to get Ascended back items? I’m pretty sure there will be a dungeon-only way of getting them, considering how hard it gets at higher levels. If I were to guess, you can probably dump some vials/globs + gift + exotic token item for one.

I don’t know that’s the ‘only’ way to acquire the item but I also know that the recipe is posted on the wiki for several new pieces and I know what those recipes require. They may also drop from the higher tiers of FoM but I haven’t run across anyone that can confirm this, so for now it appears based on what’s been confirmed that some of the items that are new require a kitten ton of materials in the same fashion that Legendary items do, and are not worth the effort. (to me)

Here’s a link for those who are curious what the mats are: http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Vial_of_Condensed_Mists_Essence

Some of those recipies require 5 essences. WOW!!!

Hi guys, please correct me if i’m wrong, however:

The difficulty level switches weekly?
Agony resistance only kicks in after level 10
(I’m currently on level 4 and have just over 100 tokens)

Now i’m not going into the whole ‘casual player’ debate, but i’m a casual player and i guess i may get to level 10 by the end of the week, but most probably i will just repeat the lower level dungeons.

So my question is, does agony really matter for those only doing the first 9 difficulty levels? – (IMO this is good.)

Please reply.

No it doesn’t.

If ANET doesn’t require you to have ascended gear and upgrades to even have a shot at completing the new content, then its not progression. If ANET does that, then its content gating. ANET was supposedly against content gating.

Sounds like you need to take another look at the bit ArenaNet gave out on the Ascended gear (from Linsey, if I recall correctly). They’ve added “optional progression”. Get it, optional. If you want harder, you progress. If you want the same, you don’t progress. So yes, you’re gated off from “hard mode” because you choose to not progress.

I don’t get how anyone could be against being “gated” against going to higher difficulty places.

exactly

its unlikely that Sory mod Dungeons and Explorables will ever require things like the acended gear sloted items

how ever i can see them adding more fractals Directly to the Fractal zone in LA. makeing it its own sub game within the world of Guild wars 2

Then it won’t be character progression. They said that future content will require agony. Expect future dungeons to require agony resistance and offer Infusion rewards.

They could easily fix this by making the last part of the event take the span of two days. Problem solved as this allows people on the other side of the world to not have to worry about missing the last part of the event because it ends when they are just signing on.

You don’t get it. Future content is going to require you to have this arbitrary buff to combat agony. For it to be “progression” it has to be required for you to have a chance to even complete the new content. That’s the problem with content gating. Its not about difficulty, its about saying “you didn’t grind, too bad you can’t experience the new content we just built.”

And its not even hard. After the second run FOTM is easy mode. When you get to level 10+, it doesn’t become harder. More mobs and higher HP bosses doesn’t make them any harder. It just makes them take more time to kill.

Why WvW != PvP

You have it wrong. Its not that ANET doesn’t care about WvW and doesn’t think its not sPvP, it that it doesn’t require the same type of balancing as sPvP does because its more about stragey and larger group play

Wait, they drop only from level 10 up? Is that someone’s idea of a sick joke?

No, you can get the essence from level 1. But its RNG which means that chances of getting them increases as you go up in levels. People are saying level 10 because it appears thats when you bump up to the next “tier” and start getting exotics and other yellow crafting matts as well.

Unless normal dungeons have this mechanic as well, don’t expect people to do them often.

…you could just make your own group with no level restriction instead of trying to change someone else.

Except the majority of the player base doesn’t want to do level under them. Not only do the rewards get better in quality, finally getting a decent amount of yellows per run after hitting level 6, but so does your chance of getting Essence which is required to make the ascended back pieces. RNG FTL
