Natures Ninja and Pain Inverter – Ranger PvP movies

Classes I know that can access most Boons fairly easy
Guardian/Warrior/Engineer/Elementalist/Thieves
I’m not sure about Mesmer, I know they can get lots of Might stacks but not sure about others
Necro’s i’m not sure about either.
Maybe erros stands his big giant body in front of people trying to stomp, absorbing enemy CC impacts. But ranger sucks at teamplay, god forbid you even CONSIDER using ranger at all in a team. A guardian is at least 4.865% more effective at this.
lets see, Elementalist/Necro’s/Guardians/Engineer’s/Thieves and Warriors can pretty much completely avoid the interrupt with a short cooldown ability.
Pretending that Signet of the Wild with Beastmaster is making you useful in a
group is pretty much silliness at best.Just like pretending that a Guardian is only 4.865% more effective in a group then a Ranger.
What don’t you understand about the words “at least”? Hooked on phonics bro, pretty sure they still sell that.
So you’re implying that in the least amount of group utility a guardian has, its 4.865% better then a Ranger?
Rofl..

People complain about Confusion just like they did with TI and Mass Betrayal in Rift…People like to spam abilities….They also don’t like to pay attention.
I actually think we’re ok in the boon department, only down side is that our boons gained through traits are only applied to ourselves.
In WvW I run a boon duration build, which I consider highly effective. Close to 18s of stability from Signet of the Beastmaster, 35 s of fury and stability from RAO, 26 fury from warhorn. Not only that, but we have very nice access to protection from dodge rolls and trait. Not to mention that Vigorous Renewal trait is applied to allies in healing spring.
My ideal patch would change Evasive Purity (or equivalent) such that boons gained through traits are shared with nearby allies and boon duration from toon is applied to pet gained boons (as they now indicate in tooltip, even though thats not the case).
Signet of the Wild with Beastmaster cracks me up
Here’s 18 seconds of stability my friend..
Just one problem, You can’t stomp anyone with it up.
Assumptions are nice until wrong. Wvw is about group play… There are very nice ways to stomp people.
Ehh, Signet of the Wild won’t let you stomp anyone while its up…not sure how I can make that anymore clear.
You’re not given the option.
If you’re having trouble vs confusion builds..Lemongrass with Melandru runes. That’ll take care most of the Confusions in the game as they’re generally low duration.
I think PI I use in my videos probably has the longest duration (7 seconds with 50% duration)
Amen to this thread!
Confusion is definitely OP, mostly because whilst all of you ‘l2pers’ are sitting around waiting for confusion to fall off, you’re taking direct damage or dying from 6 other conditions. You can’t ‘cleanse’ when Confusion is hidden under 7 other or even 2 other conditions, because the last condition to ever be removed is always Confusion, everything else goes, but the most powerful one is omnipresent and impossible to get rid of.
I’ve only ever ever been beaten in 1vs1 against 3 different mesmers and 1 engineer, all of which were running, you guessed it, confusion builds! 3vs1? Easy, assuming it isn’t 3 backstab thieves. 3vs1 with one of the 3 being a confusion Mesmer/Engineer = death. Same with 2vs1 and same with 5vs1, a 10 second daze is just overpowered, and I can’t dodge because I take confusion damage, I can’t heal because I take confusion damage, half my healing gone from that, I can’t maintain pressure on the enemy because of confusion damage, and I can’t just stand there doing nothing because I die from all of the mesmer’s other skills, he won’t be sitting there on his kitten doing nothing either to be polite, of that I assure you.
Anything I do except for walk punishing me with 2k+ damage whilst the enemy can use all of his skills is just stupid, I have condition removal, 3 skills each removing one and 1 skill removing 3, but once those are all gone it’s useless, and most of them do nothing except remove the one stack of bleed I had, or stop me being blind or remove weakness, which is so important -.-
I would settle for a removal of procc on dodge and a priority removal on this, but something, at least, definitely needs to happen.
So you’ve only ever been beaten in a 1v1 vs 4 different people, all who ran confusion builds, and Confusion is overpowered?
Traited Signet of the Wild won’t work for stomping
Cause it won’t let you stomp.

Yep … let’s look at the 0/10/0/30/30 d/d elementalist …
Mobility
- Top Dog … if they have lightning flash they beat warrior, otherwise a warrior with Greatsword / Sword+X and perma-swiftness can be faster.
Stunbreaks
- 4 Cantrips that are excellent. Equip 3 and be happy.
Condition Removal =
- Swap Attunement to Water … heal, gain regen to you and allies, and remove a condition
- OH Dagger – Water – Cleansing Wave … heal and remove a condition from you and allies
- Dodge Roll – Water – Cleansing Wave … heal and remove a condition again
- Ether Renewal removes up to 8.
- Each Cantrip removes at least one thanks to traits.
- One of them removes 3 on its own and 1 more (total 4) w/ traits.
- yes, those same utilities are both stunbreakers and condition removal in this build * they also give regen and vigor thanks to traits … and then they have their actual spell effects like teleporting, protection + stability, AOE Fire, or invulnerability
Heals
- If using Signet of Restoration, autoattacking nothing heals them
- Constant 100% up-time on regen (swapping to water and use of cantrips)
- Swapping to Water Attunement
- MH Dagger – Water – Cone of Cold
- OH Dagger – Water – Cleansing Wave
- Dodge Roll – Water – Cleansing Wave
Boons
- Give MIght to you and allies when you swap to fire
- Give Swiftness to you and allies when you swap to air
- Give Regeneration to you and allies when you swap to water
- Give Protection to you and allies when you swap to earth
- Sigil of Battle works off attunement swapping
- Gain fury when you swap attunements (to/from any attunement)
- Gain Swiftness and Fury when you use Frost or Shock Aura
- Gain Swfitness when you knock someone down with Updraft
- Gain Vigor when you crit
- Gain Vigor and Regen when you use a Cantrip
Damage Mitigation
- 100% up-time on Protection
- Frost Aura – 10% more mitigation (43% with Protection) and chill anyone that hits you (because you’re already “so easy” to catch).
- Shock Aura – stun anyone that hits you
… oh yeah … now that you have 100% up-time on 6 different boons (might, fury, swiftness, protection, regeneration, and vigor), you have +2% damage per boon on you … enjoy the extra +12% damage for being so awesome.
It’s no wonder we see so many dagger+dagger elementalists in WvW. They are great solo and they still provide lots of love to others nearby as well.
We rangers can’t even do half of that. Heck, With +90% boon duration (2 Superior Monk, 2 Superior Water, 2 Major Water, Omnomberry Cream, and 30 in Nature’s Magic) you still don’t get 100% up-time on 1 stack of Might, Fury, and Swiftness from Call of the Wild unless you also get the 20 point Wilderness Survival trait to reduce the cooldown by 20%.
Oh yeah, boons applied by your pet aren’t going to benefit from that +90% boon duration you have.
Pretty much…. Its amazing how much easier other classes have with getting boons
Just logged to game to check it out.
Swapping weapon didn’t give me any stacks of might after 3 tries (1st hit with shortbow, once it’s delivered, switching to warhorn with sigil of battle).
So it might be even worse.
What Sigils do you have on your weapons?
When someone points to Leaderboard rankings and says “Well there is a Ranger at the top on the leader boards, rangers must be good” don’t understand that’s not very much true in the real world.
I’ll give an example
When I played DAOC, I rolled a Valkyrie after coming back from WoW. When i rolled this valkyrie they were the worst class in the game by far. They were basically weaker versions of Thanes back then. Very few people played them…In fact I came back 6 month’s after they came out, took a month to level one, and still was the first RR5 Valkyrie on the US servers.. so that should tell you something (I was the first RR10 one as well)
Anyway, When I played my Valkyrie, I played in an 8man that was considered one of the best, if not the best on Merlin. We won probably 95% of our fights..and yet I played the worst class in the game in our groups.
That’s what I said many many times. Boons are one of our weakest sides.
You might say – oh ye, how about sigil of strenght and battle?
Well, sigil of battle with zerker weapons has ~45seconds cooldown due bug.
Sigil of strenght (which I’ve been using for few months) gives 3 stacks of might at it’s best with 80% critical chance.I wish they added more viable boons to our traits as they are now. Just additional effect to some traits or skills.
I’d love to have regeneration applied by my own, even if it was 130hp/sec.With 60% boon duration I can hit max stacks of might on my ele for my own.
Edit:
I’ll write one more thing before someone points that out.
‘’Yes, but you can have boons from pets!’‘.
Sure, we can. But one thing is that it’s partly waste using pet for booning yourself and second is that you lose much much more. People with BM trait lose 40% of their damage (or more?) and eg. I, lose supporter (fear and immobilize).
Ah, and pets with decent boons don’t really last too long during fights and you have to be very near when you apply them.
Sigil of Battle has 45 second cooldown with zerker weapons?
That might explain why i tried it and was un-impressed
Yea, not ranger specific, and not a reliable way to get might..
I can get 10 stacks of might on my thief just by dodging and going stealth.
one of the weakness’s i find with rangers is our inability to get boons by any substantial means
Might is a prime example of this, other then Call of the Wild (and Rampage as One) we don’t really have a solid source of getting might.
We’re just light period on Boons
Couple thoughts, I’m guessing the reason you’re getting the Confusion on dodge Jakob is you have an ability that’s proccing on Dodge, Maybe might or caltrops (I’ll have to rewatch) those will cause you to take confusion damage as your dodge is basically a skill use at that point.
Most of the other things you said are pretty much correct, It’s more useful for Close Range Melee Fighting Rangers though, as a SB ranger avoiding close range you probably wouldn’t get as much use out of it as I do.
If you watch in the videos I generally try and get in close pop it then switch to sword/dagger for the evade chain (meaning they’re swinging and missing, but taking lots of damage)
Engineer’s right now are also incredibly powerful with their confusion stacks, if you watch I fight one and a mesmer..He gets 11 Confusion stacks on me but I avoid it by not using a skill, I then PI him, and he kills himself because he didn’t know he had confusion on himself.
By the way, my PI lasts 7 seconds with my Runeset and food ;o)

Movie I did of this morning solo pvping
PVE is ok now and again.. it just can’t be boring pve..
GW2 PVE is boring to me…
I mean i’ve been tempted to go play LOTRO some (I have a lifetime to that which is nice) and its basically just PVE
Yea the only thing that would remotely be interesting to me in playing right now would be a Minion Master Necro..I would love to make a video of doing World vs World on that.. but I absolutely cannot stand PVE in this game..
Just boring as hell after playing TSW and SWTOR
Nice video. Still makes me wish my Ranger was a Asuran. <smiles>
Are you going to be playing your Thief permanently now?
No, don’t really play the thief all that much
I’ve played like 7 hours in the past 2 weeks
Its hard for me to get interested in a game that feels like its stagnating..
Its like how DAOC was for me after playing it for close to 9 years…Realm Points didn’t mean all that much to me as anything past RR11 was kind of grindy and pointless.
I however had the Lone Enforcer title to work for..this game doesn’t really have anything like that.
Sorry to hear that. I havn’t logged in for a week myself. It has also grown stale for me too. I was hoping for a lot more with this latest patch, and quite frankly I do not feel like grinding out rank, in zerg vs zerg.
Please let me know if you move on to another PvP game, i would love to join you.
Next MMO I play will probably be ESO
Though I funded the CU kickstarter hehe
Also for rank, I ran around taking things (camps and such) while looking for fights..Its fairly slow if you’re not running in a zerg, when I can in a zerg it was so easy to get some rank cause all you have to do is tap someone.
This game over-rewards zerging though, so thats kind of to be expected
I was the thief at the end of the video. I just KNEW you would make another video and put me in it. If you recall, I dueled you a few times with both S/D and D/P about a month ago near your spawn in one of the borderlands. We discussed your experiments with technobabble and rangers in general. At the time you were trying to make a build work with it and we had some fights for your research, so to speak. =)
Good fight, btw.
Ahh, I remember you..yea was trying to make the Daze Build work..I mean it does alright.. but the lack of healing compared to BM beastmaster is noticeable.
By the way, you could of totally gotten away..You stopped for a split second to I guess do black powder/HS combo and let the bird catch ya.
You could of kept running and there would of been no way for me to catch up hehe

Nice video, PI murders lol wish rangers did have better way getting confusion.
Also you run healing spring if you ran SB entangle would almost be useless vs you, you could go as far as sitting in the entangle and not worrying about the damage.
But your different style close ranger which fits your PI and build.
I run full apothecary, and i find that Shortbow’s damage with that set just tends to be pretty god awful which is why I don’t run it.
I could also run Greatsword which would be interesting, but I’d basically be giving up Axe/Dagger in that setup (since i’d move torch over to sword)
Not sure how i’d like that though.. I’ve tried it before and i felt the damage was subpar.
Axe i find useful for the Chill/Weakness mainly (though Split is nice)
Was that you I was fighting this morning by chance?
If it was, that kitten Entangle kept screwing me over so much..I’d get caught by the very edge of it and then get boned cause I couldn’t hit the kitten thing with sword (Axe seems to work better as I think it bounces multiple times on the root)
What really annoyed me was i think you missed me on that last fight with it, and I ran into the kitten root anyway.
Yeah the Sos ranger
Entangle is really buggy sometimes and that has happened to me many times. I try and stay close to my pet when fighting other rangers so I can sick my pet onto it if I get caught like that.
imo they should change it so its not so hit and miss. Right now it will either win you a fight or do absolutely nothing.
If i’m standing in the middle of it, I can dodge out of it sometimes, or damage it..However for some reason, if I get caught on the edge of the thing, I can’t touch it (I can’t even attack it seems) with sword at least….
But yea..Its hit and miss.. some classes of course can escape it easily (Thieves) ..however my Ranger has a kitten of a time with it.
I had a Guardian Res an Engineer who I got down to 25% health while in down state…before I could stomp the Engineer…
I wasn’t interrupted, he simply ressed him faster then I could stomp..
That is moronic..
Thanks for the vid Xsorus! I have enjoyed watching your ranger vids over the past few months so I’m a bit sad this is the final one. I was happy I finally got a chance to duel you and now with firsthand experience I gotta say you are a beast!

Probably my final GW2 movie, at least i’m pretty sure its my last Ranger one
Ok
Decided, to do a final movie because I hate odd numbers (and the last one was a thief)
You can break 10k on Maul..I’ve done it before..Its a very Niche spec though, cause Maul is a huge pain the kitten to land.
I think a few people should remember that every winning server is called the zerg server- when SBI was winning their tier, they were called a zerg server, when CD was winning, they were called a zerg server, now that we’re winning, we are called the zerg server.
That’s cause if you’re Green, you outnumber everyone else…
It’s not magical that each tier’s Green server just has more people then everyone else..
Its how WvW point system works.
I would also replace sigil of earth since you barely have any condition damage or crit chance.
Well i got great access to fury,i swap a lot,i dont afraid to enter meele.i can escape easily with lightning reflexes and Swoop.I swap pets and weapons a lot, almost whenever is on cd so crit chance is a little more that it looks. In the other hand yes i dont have any cond dmg but i feel that Shortbow even as a power weapon needs this sigil. It helps me a lot with some tough toughness builds prof (Guardians). Its about balance imo..Why not put some cond in there and help a little your dps, even if its not big numbers i believe if you see the total results you will see more dmg at the end
Use that sigil that gives you lightning damage (or the fire one) it’ll end up being more damage over time with a crit build like yours.
Why are you running Signet of the Hunt and Agility Training?
I use SoH as a dmg skill for my pet and a mobility skill for me..I really like that has short cd and after entering a combat i use it for a nice maul from my Jaguar..Just imagine this.Go close to enemy—Shortbow#5—Swap to Jaguar—F2-hit SoH—swap to Greatsword—#5 Greatsword—#2 Greatsword for the lolz..Its not a instant kill but its a great dmg unload.ill try to make a number(not accurate).its about 8k dmg in 5 secs, not bad for a tankish build right?
Still not sure its worth it…I mean you can double pop SoH (preload it)
I’d think since you’re using Shortbow the Reduction in cooldown on its ability would give you more bang for your buck.
I do get your reasoning though..I tried switching over to it at one point when I wasn’t running Signet of the Hunt in my build.
Why are you running Signet of the Hunt and Agility Training?
High Power Based Burst Damage is overpowered
Why must I spec for Toughness
Down system in general should be disabled in World vs World…
It rewards zerging far more then then anything else in this game.
Engineer’s can actually be real nasty to fight in WvW..Though i’ve not fought any since patch so i don’t know if their might stacking was nerfed.
Guardians are easy with a Condition Build, same with Mesmer’s
Thieves are hit or miss, Some you simply cannot kill.. and then some you’ll explode..
Elementalist actually aren’t that hard for me, But remember I use Pain Inverter, and Confusion will hurt an Elementalist fairly badly.
Without a doubt, DAoC is superior to GW2. But then again it took 5 years to polish DAOC.
I know some of you dont agree, but GW2 is a 10 year project. But the time it hits 5 years, it will be far more fun than what daoc was after 5 years.
Unless they plan on changing the down system in this game in the next 10 years..unlikely
DAoC was fun, and that statement comes from a former RR10 Thane.
(LAGHAMMAHZ)In all honesty though, with how much this community kittenes about the asymmetric nature of the classes in this game, imagine how they’d react to, what was it, 25 unique classes split unevenly into 3 distinct realms.
DAoC today = Developer Nightmare.
GW2 = Good enough for gov’ment work.Besides, thinking about Bolt-ranged 60s Mess from a lifetapping, pet-charming, POM-chanting class with Single-charge BT, Ablatives AND AF buffs is making me sick.
NEED MOAR BOMB GROUPS PLZ.
Sorcs always cracked me up on My Valkyrie and my Savage..Get on them, and watch them pop MoC and start life tapping..Run in the opposite direction…. wait 10 seconds…Come back and kill them.
words
DAOC was better by far than this game, but it died. End of story.
ps: Darkness Falls came way after Trials of Atlantis. Did you not play the game?Do you even lift bro? :P
Just playing, lol. But:
He wasn’t talking about the expansion, was talking about the PvP dungeon near PK Bridge in Alb, not too sure about mid/hib lol
Yes, the PvP dungeon under the center of the map(DF) came 4 years after TOA.
You’re thinking of Labyrinth of the Minotaur. Completely different dungeon.
Anyway…DAOC is superior in pretty much every way concerning PvP in this game….GW2 doesn’t hold a candle..
Hell GW2 doesn’t even beat Warhammer Online when it comes to PvP….
Hell even the actual Mechanics of PvP require less skill then DAOC…
I know some will say “But in GW2 you have to dodge” and in DAOC you had to actually Position your self to use attacks worth anything…Hell You had to position yourself period so you wouldn’t be destroyed…Which is the equiv of dodging in this game.
if Mark Jacobs Camelot Unleashed is half as good as DAOC, it’ll still be 4x better then GW2.
Okay i am going to revoke your “I know what i am talking about card” for your Warhammer online statement. I played that on the side of Order for a long time and that game is TRASH compared to GW2 when it comes to WvW.
Now i played on the European servers and there was only 3 classes that was core. WP, Knight and Bright Wizard. A few Slayers and few AM’s could be useful, but the rest had to be bomb’s or else you would lose.
Hey want to attack a keep. Where there is 1 way in so stand here and press hold the line over and over and over and over and over and over. The maps them self where badly made super unbalanced tiny. The Tier 3 ones where good, but tier 4. MY GOD!
RK was active in that game and a massive force on our server and to this day we still joke about the horrible stuff that was in that game.
Remember knights were not in the game at the start, So i’m assuming you had Ironbreakers back then.
AM’s at the start also had an incredibly powerful Channeled Heal.
White Lions had their Massive Range Pull (one you could pull someone across the entire map)
Runepriests also were pretty good.
Witch hunters were kind of week at the beginning, But eventually became pretty good. Shadow Warriors were kitten..Engineer’s were powerful till they nerfed the PBAE pull.
You actually probably had more build diversity at the beginning on Warhammer, What you’re talking about is Mid Warhammer right after Knights were added in, and You usually ran 1 Knight/2 Wp’s/2 Bw’s and your 6th was usually whatever you wanted…Cause lets face it, Those 3 classes were great for groups (You could substitute a WP for a Rune Priest, but that was really up to you) DPS AM’s actually ended up being a powerful 6th.
Little after that Slayers were added and you started having Slayer/Choppa Heavy groups running.
As for the one way inside the keeps, This is true…you only had one way in… But really does it matter? You basically focused on a point and fought around it… Your zerg could easily be wiped from behind if you weren’t careful either. You had the Realm Rank system so you actually had a reason to defend and hold that keep (not to mention you didn’t want them to get to your city)
Also you disliked the maps? I’ll admit I didn’t care a whole lot for the T4 orc/dwarf pairing..but the Dark Elf/High Elf and Human/Chaos Pairing had fairly good maps..Praag for example.
Unless you’re talking about Scenario’s? In which case you’re probably right about T4 maps, very few of them were really great..I can think of maybe 1 or 2 off the top of my head.
Did your server win the matchup?
Yet to be determined this week. But most likely we will end up in second place. SoR cannot hope to beat JQ, so SoR is no threat to them. This means that JQ attacks blackgate because we threaten them, and SoR attacks blackgate because they cannot beat JQ, and their only chance is to play for 2nd place. With the current balancing of wvw, this tier 1 meta won’t change anytime soon. So all we can do is pound SoR into the ground until they eventually drop tier and we can get someone else who would hopefully be good enough to contest JQ coverage. It’s unfortunate, but it’s the current status of tier 1 and it makes sense. But there are good battles to be had so I cannot complain.
So you cannot beat JQ because of Population correct?
Yea, you’d want 30 in Skirmishing, probably 30 in power tree as well, for Longbow Increase with with Pierce Arrows also.
Food wise, I’m guessing what? Rare Veggie Pizza?
@Zenith, oh, I don’t know how the ICD works? Please tell me more about how I don’t understand such a simple system!!
PS: it’s per player bro, not spirit.
Group effect, duh. The problem is how you exaggerate the ffect of a 1 sec burn proc on a 10 sec ICD.
I’m glad you+your hyenas can stack 4 secs of burning every 10 seconds. Too bad a condi engineer can do that even better and more reliably.
P.S. People, you could give spirits the toughness of a full pvt or cleric guardian with tough/vit traitlines and they will still die quickly. Lupicus aoe bombs and lv40+ fractal aoe is not something high toughness units live through. You HAVE TO dodge them. And minions/pets can’t dodge and they don’t have vigor to dodge as often if they got a standard dodge.
The main form of mitigation in pve is dodging and reflection. Minions/pets have neither, so they die. Nothing short of passive resistance/mitigation of damage+regen will keep up with the amount of aoe sprayed in pve and wvw.
You do realize that my build was designed for tPvP right? I’ve said this in every post i’ve ever commented on for it and EVERY SINGLE TIME someone brings up about how “Well prof X can do it better on the <insert random PVE boss fight with AoEs here>!”, yes that’s nice and all, but that’s not where i use the condi longbow build…
And btw… if i’m in a group with an ele or a guardian WHY would i bring my sun spirit? I’d swap it over to frost spirit or stone spirit because they’d be A LOT more useful in an instance where someone else is applying the burning..
God i swear half the people who make arguments about my build don’t even read the “It was designed for tPvP” part…
I wonder how useful It’d be to make a Rampager Armor SB/LB build for zerging…Since Barrage like you said would do 5 Stacks of bleed on everyone you hit with it.
Ok here is my idea for Spirits.
Spirits have 2 modes, Offensive and Defensive that you can switch back and forth between.
Defensive Causes the Ranger to admit an Aura around him
Offensive Causes his pet to gain an offensive ability.Stone Spirit – Defensive : Every 10 Seconds Gives everyone around him 3 Seconds of Protection in a 600 Radius
– Offensive: Every 10 second your pet will cause the ground to tremble in a 300 radius around him and immobilize targets for 2 secondsFrost Spirit – Defensive : Grants an Aura that causes attacks against the player to cause 2 seconds of Chilled, 300 Radius 5 second ICD.
– Offensive : Every 10 Seconds the pet will sent a splash of water out granting 4 seconds of Regen to all allies within 600 Radius.Sun Spirit – Defensive : Grants and Aura around the player that causes attacks against the player to cause 2 Seconds of Burning Damage – 6 second ICD 300 radius
– Offensive : Gives the players pet an ability that does a 300 Radius blind every 10 secondsStorm Spirit – Defensive: Gives the player an aura that causes attacks against the player to grant 5 Seconds of Vigor – 8 Second ICD – 600 Radius
– Offensive: Every 10 Seconds, the Pet Gains the ability to Daze for 2 seconds on his next attack.Xsourus I like your proposal for the following reasons:
1. Many rangers express the desire to provide greater benefit to a group, whether in dungeons or PvE/WvWvW world settings. This suggestion gives them more utilities to provide boons or conditions.
2. By splitting the ability between the pet and the Ranger a player can use two different effects depending on what is needed. For example, send the pet in to daze a monster or opponent going for a stomp or keep protection up due to incoming pressure.
3. Defensive and offensive settings provide players a choice between play styles. They can turtle for sniper and defense, they can remain in the vicinity and melee, they can extend their reach/support via the pet.
4. It follows along ANets desire to keep the pet a part of the Ranger’s arsenal and gives it more utility.Areas of concern:
1. Managing cooldowns and switching between defensive/offensive mode for three spirits.
2. Visually representing def/off states to the player.
3. Are the defesive auras combo field?
4. Can the pet use all offensive mode skills at once?
5. Adding a base set of skills usable by all pets plus their “F2” skill would be rather potent, even potentially over-powered.Thoughts?
1. I was thinking Maybe have a cooldown on switching between Offensive and Defensive (Say 20 seconds). The idea would be to allow you to Switch to a Group Utility Row when you needed to, and switch to a More Offensive Role for your pet when it wasn’t needed.
2. Glow Maybe, I’m not completely certain on this, I do think we should remove the Spirit Pet models though as that is such more clutter in PvP for no reason.
3. They’re just Aura’s, not Combo Fields.. though some of the abilities could grant combo fields (Maybe the pet offensive version, I just tried to come up with a new mechanic for spirits that’s different from what we got)
4. Abilities for the pet could be different from what I listed, Idea was just a Defensive Aura Based Mechanic that doesn’t work on the Ranger and would effect people near him (including his pet for example) and an Offensive Version designed around making his Pet more powerful.
5. I think Spirit idea like this wouldn’t be as powerful as most would think…Remember we’re allowed just 3 Utilities, We could make our pets more powerful via these Spirits but at the same time we’d be giving up things like Speed/Health Regen/Lightning Reflex. What would probably happen is people would end up using at most 1 or 2 Spirits instead of all 3. However this would give us much needed Group utility and make Spirits useful in something besides Group Fights with the Offensive Nature.
on the Offensive Abilities from the pet…I think It’d probably be better to move the Daze up to 15 Seconds instead of 10…Having a Daze+Blind go off every 10 seconds would be pretty useless combined. This would allow the pet to Daze for 2 seconds, then Blind on his next hit afterward I think.
So in Offensive Mode what you have is 2 Aura’s (Regen/Immobilize) and 2 Next hit Attacks (Blind/Daze)
This would give people the ability to mix and Match i think. You could go more CC heavy with Immobilize and Daze for example, or more defensive with regen/blind.

Ok here is my idea for Spirits.
Spirits have 2 modes, Offensive and Defensive that you can switch back and forth between.
Defensive Causes the Ranger to admit an Aura around him
Offensive Causes his pet to gain an offensive ability.
Stone Spirit – Defensive : Every 10 Seconds Gives everyone around him 3 Seconds of Protection in a 600 Radius
– Offensive: Every 10 second your pet will cause the ground to tremble in a 300 radius around him and immobilize targets for 2 seconds
Frost Spirit – Defensive : Grants an Aura that causes attacks against the player to cause 2 seconds of Chilled, 300 Radius 5 second ICD.
– Offensive : Every 10 Seconds the pet will sent a splash of water out granting 4 seconds of Regen to all allies within 600 Radius.
Sun Spirit – Defensive : Grants and Aura around the player that causes attacks against the player to cause 2 Seconds of Burning Damage – 6 second ICD 300 radius
– Offensive : Gives the players pet an ability that does a 300 Radius blind every 10 seconds
Storm Spirit – Defensive: Gives the player an aura that causes attacks against the player to grant 5 Seconds of Vigor – 8 Second ICD – 600 Radius
– Offensive: Every 10 Seconds, the Pet Gains the ability to Daze for 2 seconds on his next attack.
Spirits as Totems = Basically Traps
Spirits Invulnerable = Basically Group Version of Signets
That is the current problem with ideas like that..
I have an idea on how you could change them…
This is a great thread! Glad to see the discussions being had.
I’m noticing a lot of people wondering and estimating the size of attacks, durations, and things like that… I will talk with our balance team to see how they feel about adding more detailed skill facts to the spirits.
We’re aware that spirits need more than just skill facts – we’re working on resolving that as well.
I’m actually going to recommend against doing that..
Because if you do a tooltip fix for Spirits, and nothing else…you’re going to get skewered on this forum rather badly.
I voted with mine, put my money down on that the day it opened.
This is something we’re not strong at compared to other classes..
My thief probably has the easiest, I can lay down 3 separate poison combo fields….
If Axe was 1200 Range, or Traps were greater range, those would probably be used more..
Bow with Pierce Arrow is to unreliable cause half the time you’ll be hitting a blob of Mesmer pets ikittenerg anyway
How do you define experience?
Playtime? Cause I guarantee based on what people have said on this forums, I don’t have the most experienced thing down at all.
Last I checked, I have like 700 hours on my ranger that i’ve played since release
You’re implying that being able to get away from people isn’t useful to the team based on a point system for both TPvP and WvW…
Its implying that there isn’t a balance issue because it doesn’t have effect on the outcome of the match (which i disagree with on TPvP, and WvW I agree with you on, but based on different reasons)
I think you missed this part:
Unfortunately, unless you are way way way far away from your spawn in wvw…
I wasn’t saying 100% of the time running away is useless. It’s situation specific.
Here’s a good example of me running away in a useful way, incase you think I don’t do it.
2 thieves chase my ranger across a borderlands. Half-way across the map I realize they are not going to stop chasing me. I could do 1 of 2 things, port back to spawn, or run up garrison ramp, contest the waypoint and die for it. I chose to contest the waypoint, die, and then respawn.
I could have survived forever running, but there was no point to it, they were going to chase me anywhere I went (It could have been because I was pointing and laughing at them) and my build isn’t capable of countering 2 thieves with the specs they were running (1 a sword dps build, another a d/d burst, both of which are tough fights for my ranger 1v1) I was therefore more useful dying than I would have been continuing to run.
Now if 5 people had been chasing me… I would have run all day. Because more than likely that is a gank group, and the longer I run away, they less useful they are being. Last night I was slapping SoR’s towers and keeps to put swords on them… Then I found out Choo had sent their ENTIRE 70 MAN ZERG to kill me, they chased me cross map for about 3 minutes before I ran out of escapes and died. Running away is useful in these situations as I essentially removed 70 people from the map for 3 minutes and left them on JQ side, as opposed to BG side where they started.
Now does this happen all the time? No. Do I run away from engagements I cannot win? Quite often, I even spec’d so I could do so. Don’t read into things that aren’t there please, it’s terribly annoying having to explain myself in detail, I’d rather kill people in gw2.
In otherwords, 2 thieves chased you down and killed you…
You believe that wasn’t a waste though because you contested a point…
Hence my original point, that what you did really didn’t have an effect on the outcome of the match.
Population does..You did not..
I prevented JQ from being able to react in time and my server took bay. Are you new to wvw? Do you have any idea how useful contesting a waypoint at the proper time is? This conversation is over, you’re very dense and inexperienced.
Did your server win the matchup?
