Heh, as someone who runs around solo fighting other players I can safely say that anytime you see me fighting anything past 2 people in my videos, Those players are not very good. Well at least in my ranger videos, thief is a bit different (how good players in a thief video are is determined by how many people i’m allowed to actually kill in that video, the more kills i’m allowed to get the worse the players are)

This game doesn’t reward the solo player, It esp in a 1vX fight, to win a 1vX fight your opponent really has to screw up….Anything past 2 and it gets to be rather silly in trying to down some players (cause at that point, they can basically instantly res the person)

I could make multiple videos of me actually getting zerged down, I don’t think anyone person who’s ever posted a video of his fights has claimed otherwise that they don’t get zerged at some point. Sure some classes die more then others (pretty much every class but Thief/Ele will see this happen) but that’s not the point of the videos.

They’re meant to be entertaining. That is why you don’t see a lot of videos of me zerg surfing shooting people with my bow, Because no one watches them, they’re boring..

Pretty much the bigger the odds you fight against, The better your video will do. That is why you see the 1 good player vs the 5 bad ones…Because it makes for an entertaining video to fight greater odds.

Pigs F2 ability needs to hack like Steal from Thieves, were it replaces the F2 with whatever they picked up.

Think about how much utility is present in what the Pigs currently have, and realize no one uses it because the awful nature at which Pigs f2 is designed currently around.

This is one of the main problems with Rangers currently, we have a lot of Stuff that should be on our class shoved onto our pets in a kitten manner with no thought to usability, and people wonder why we’re not as good as other classes.

GW2 will always reward zerg play because its designed around a failed E-Sport system.

DAOC didn’t have that sort of system, So you were allowed to run 8mans that could wipe large zergs very quickly (In seconds)

This made traveling ikittenerg an advantage in that you had more numbers, But also as a Disadvantage in that you were a Target for these 8mans to hit. It required your own Small Groups and smart play to not be instantly dropped by these groups.

Things like Collision Detection will also not exist, because you technically don’t have Tanks, I mean…The reason it worked in warhammer online for example is because you had Classes like the Blackguard which had a lot of utility but had little damage, In exchange though they could face tank a zerg of players with ease.

This game will never been DAOC, hell it’ll never been Warhammer Online…It has shown that despite having 3 Factions, If you combat system and gameplay mechanics are designed horribly it won’t be able to compete with games with 2 Factions (WAR) in terms of actual good combat/gameplay.

So if you’re looking for DAOC2, i suggest waiting for ESO or CU as maybe they’ll be close to it.

GW2 is not going to be it though.

I wouldn’t use the trait without Technobabble, It doesn’t increase the Stun/Daze enough on GS/SB to matter.

Yea, tons of SPvP only changes in that gamemode, Plus the fact the entire awful SPvP mechanic is based on sitting on a point twiddling your thumbs.

Makes Traps more useful, 600 Range traps not nearly as amazing when I can take 2 steps to the left and avoid them vs having to fight on them.

This game is designed around terrible E-sport mechanics, therefor it’ll never be a great World vs World game.

Simply look at DAOC, which is a prime example of a PvP game done right, where running ikittenerg gave you an advantage in terms, but also made you a target for roaming 8 mans that could instantly wipe your zerg if you weren’t paying attention.

8mans in that game kept higher population servers in check, Just cause you had more people, didn’t mean you couldn’t be wiped.

Instead we reward zerging in this game, There is no incentive for a small group of good players to be on the lower population server on a tier, none…In DAOC in meant more targets thus more Realm Points, in this gaming..nothing..

If you’re playing this game for any sort of accomplishment in status from being the best server….you’re kidding yourself…The Ranking in this game means absolutely nothing in terms of servers and skill..It simply means you outnumber your opponents.

I like the idea of Spirits being a Buff you can impart someone with.

Mainly, Lets say I have Spirit of the Sun, I can Click say another player or my Pet, and Activate Spirit of the Sun which gives that Player or my Pet a chance to do a Burning Attacking and proc a Blind when hit.

You could then go up the Nature Line, and have other buffs like The Player or the Pet you have this Spirit buff attached to whenever he crits gives the Ranger a Stack of Might for example, Or maybe give a talent where Whenever the player procs the Burn attack from the Spirit Buff, he gives all players around him a chance to Proc a similar burn.

There is plenty of different ways they could take the Spirit line, the current method right now is crap….And you have only two ways it can go, It can either be terrible like it is now, Or it can be a stupid Group Signet type setting like it was in beta.

Plus the fact that all pets besides Drakes don’t cleave…

The only thing that made them remotely usable in the past was not being able to be killed….in which they were nothing more then Signets at that point, but group oriented.

The whole Spirit Concept needs a vast redesign.

All thieves can get rid of conditions easy, cause almost all of them take 30 shadow arts because it not only removes conditions every 3 seconds in stealth (so if you wait the 4 seconds in stealth, it’ll remove 2 conditions every time you do it) It also heals for more then a Ranger in a full Healing Power Set automatically without the investment in a signet or in gear.

Yep … Shadow’s Rejuvenation is 293 hp per sec while stealthed. Granted, it’s a 30 point trait so it should be good … but then take a look at Ranger’s stuff:

• 30 pt trait, Natural Healing : 125 per second for pet, 133 every 2 seconds for player. (player alone gets less than 25% of what the thief gets)
• Utility, Signet of the Wild : 62 per second for pet, 125 per second for the player

So let’s look at this combined.

• If a thief takes a 30 pt trait, they get 293 hp per sec while stealthed (which that build spends 50+%).
• If a ranger only takes a 30 pt trait, they get 66.5 hp per sec (133/2)
• If a ranger only takes a utility, they get 125 per sec
• If a ranger takes a 30pt trait and a utility they get 191.5 hp per sec ((133/2) + 125)

Granted, the thief has to stealth to gain theirs, but stealth comes with several other benefits for Thieves and is a decent portion of their gameplay. Does it really warrant them getting twice as much as a ranger who invests the same number of trait points AND 1/3 of their utility slots?

Now, before anyone tells me “but Ranger gets tons of evasion!” …

My personal favorite is the 5 Seconds of Regen they get every time they stealth..

I abuse it with my healing power thief, I have only 800 hp with the gear right now, but i’m doing over 600 HPS while in stealth..

Natural Vigor and Bowl of Orrian Truffle don’t stack.

As for the OP, How about you don’t interfere and go do something else, Those two guilds realize that the World vs World ranking system is nothing more then a population ranking system and want to do something different.

I can’t believe someone thinks we remotely have as good as Condition removal as a Thief.

I can remove 2 conditions every time I go stealth, and my Heal removes them as well.

Not to mention, I have vastly superior healing to a Ranger, you think our Regens our great…I can get 5 seconds of regen every time I stealth + an extra 400 from Rejuv while stealthed…

People don’t use off hand axe because they seem to thing Whirling DEFENSE is an offensive skill…

And it seems that they want to be buffing our utilities, which could mean spirits getting some loving.

I don’t use Whirling Defense because I can accomplish the same thing with Great Sword while being able to move.

Standing in Place is never a good thing as a Ranger.

Plus trying to land Path of Scars in PvP is pita..

You tried it in PvE yet? I’m telling you, it’s awesome. In WvW it’s really situational though and requires smart play. I’ve killed exactly one rifle warrior with it, blocked projectiles with it, and I heard it’s an effective counter for big crit thives since it’s like a 12 s animation, it buys you time until the thief appears…or, as I’ve heard, if the player is dumb enough to hit you he/she will be defeated.

Can you elaborate on whether you think I’m flat out wrong? Sometimes I am, dude, I can admit that. I thought immobilize was CC the other day until you corrected me and said it was a condition. I’m not afraid to admit mistakes at all.

To long of a timer to really use in PVE, you’re honestly better off with Greatsword.

As for PvP, its the standing in place part..if you could move with it, it’d instantly be better…

Right now though if you use it people just move out of it…

Too long of CD? How so? With axe axe you doing ricochets that really hurt bosses / mobs and path of scars will hit more people for more damage than GS. I know this fr experience so I don’t feel I have to prove it…if anyone has the motivation to check the numbers in zerk gear let us know but I just feel like the reflects (caudecus manor for example) are too good to pass up and by the time I cycle through my skills the whirl is ready again, have the time happening in water field healing people (yes I use drake blast finisher too). It’s better than you think, try it again with 20/20/0/0/30 and honed axes.

Regarding the point about moving out of it, I think that’s part of the point. That’s a lot like thieves who constantly say “I CAN JUST RUN AROUND YOUR TRAPS” well, sure, but by then I’m gone to actually cap points.

Great Sword with Offensive Gear hits harder then Axe with Offensive Gear, Path of Stars while nice isn’t worth taking a shoddy offhand for. Ricochet While great against mobs Is dog in PvP cause people just ignore it, You can also basically absorb range with Great Sword Block as well (though not send it back at the enemy)

this of course is completely ignoring the Interrupt+Movement of Greatsword as well.

Maul vs Splitblade also, Splitblade is dog for damage other then condition, While Maul isn’t great for Condition Builds (Has really more to do with the weapons complete lack of conditions besides Maul) It can still be somewhat comparable. With Power/Precision its vastly superior.

No, they said they’re looking at shatter to see if its overpowered, which they won’t determine till after they buff Greatsword/Scepter…Then and only then will they nerf Shatter

The difference between a Thief Burst and a Warriors burst is simple..

Warrior Burst is insanely easy to dodge, and the warrior can’t do it again 4 seconds later or escape the fight if he screws up.

Saying you need stealth because you die to 100b Warriors also cracks me up, Everyone can die to a 100b Warrior….Some of us don’t have stealth to save us from it, even though bout the only time it happens is if they AJ you, or if you’re frankly blind and smashing your head against the keyboard.

Just curious, who are you comparing warrior burst to that has a 4 sec CD on their combo? These are the numbers I come up with:

“Brainless” Warrior Combo:

Bull’s Charge (40s CD) -> Frenzy (60s CD) -> Hundred Blades (8s/6s traited CD) -(optional)> Eviscerate (10s/8s traited CD + endurance)

Longest CD = 60 sec downtime

“Brainless” Thief Combo:

Basilisk Venom (45s/36s traited CD) -> Cloak and Dagger (6 ini) -> Mug (45s/38s traited CD) -> Backstab (0 ini, requires stealth)

Longest CD = 45 sec downtime, 38 sec if traited

Granted, in every scenario a thief burst is indeed up faster, but the only place I could see you pulling “4 seconds” from is if you are only considering Cloak and Dagger+Backstab, which in itself is far from a lethal burst on any target except for a glass cannon elementalist.

Considering CnD+BS on its own is more akin to something like leg specialist bladetrail+100b. There is still a difference, but both classes can pull these off multiple times in a teamfight.

You don’t need Basilisk Venom nor Mug to burst with a thief, Mug does help but you can easily do CND/BS/Heart Seeker Spam.

You need Bulls Charge for a 100b Warrior, otherwise you’re not landing 100b

On my thief, I run towards zergs

On my Ranger, i run from zergs.

I will say this though, I actually do tend to kill a bit faster on my Ranger then my thief with condition build. My thief is far more safer though.

Trying to play a glass cannon as anything other then a Mesmer/Thief (and possibly Elementalist) is pointless.

As I’ve said before – I am not on the balance team… at best I can present things and harp on issues and constantly bring them up to keep them in focus, and to remind the people on the team and who make the decisions in the end that it is an issue that needs to get resolved. I’m a dungeon content designer who plays ranger at a high level, and that is why I am in the meetings, to be a representative for that sect (for lack of a better word).

This thread and my presence really isn’t damage control, otherwise I would have failed pretty hard at it in business terms. Making a visible list of issues to bring up with devs and allowing non-devs to see it isn’t exactly good damage control since it can set up high expectations, and the only reason this thread has reached the size it has (I feel) Is because I am posting in it; drawing even more attention that the topic would have garnered otherwise. So if anything my coming here has served only to shine a brighter light on the improvements needed to the ranger/pet/player dynamic (trademark).

Understand you’re not the first Developer to come to these forums, Peters came before, told us some things, and nothing came of it.

Necromancers as well….Though I see less solo Necromancers cause they’re amazing in zerg play.

Doesn’t matter what you run, if you have Empathetic Bond, its going to gut some of your damage because your pet is always going to be apart of you. So you can either have no condition removal worth anything, Or you can take a damage nerf.

Its not the damage that gets you, its the Chills/Cripples on your pet that do.

So much hot air in this thread. Every ranger thinks hes the best. For every gosu ranger there are 20 scrub mesmers, thieves, warriors and eles who are vastly more effective in wvw.

Unfortunately, that’s because the good builds have been mapped out for them because everyone main’s those professions except for, maybe, me and a few other people that don’t endlessly whine on this thread. I posit here that ranger, as a profession, is understudied and appears worse than it really is due to poor play.

And to Xsorsus: level your ranger and come back in 3 months. I’m going to take the opposite challenge and level another profession and compare it to ranger. It sucks because my ranger, as it stands, does so much more damage and my playstyle has to change completely.

So I posit a second reason that people do poorly on ranger is because they’ve built in habits that don’t apply when you play ranger. Like, for me, I’m struggling with elementalist, thief, and I almost fall asleep playing warrior.

I think only warriors dwarf rangers in terms of poor PvP. Unsupported warriors in WvW, for example, are generally a free kill. But right after them is ranger. I suspect this is for two reasons:

A) Lots of new players pick warrior and take him into WvW with PvE specs

B) Lots of new players pick ranger and having nothing mapped out for them (strife025 comes to mind for warriors), they tend to just experiment with trial and error and their first PvE mistake is to choose bows. SB and LB just are not as good in PvE as sword/warhorn and axe/axe. You can debate the numbers with me but when you consider the utility and that the faster you kill a boss in PvE the more likely the whole team is to survive, then it because essential to dodge accurately and play melee.

I just don’t think this has been mapped out for folks and us—the people that have seen the bright spots in the profession and exploited them to our advantage—just haven’t been vocal enough about builds.

Go for it, level another class besides the ranger, come back in 3 months and post your experience with it.

This games stealth is vastly superior to every other games stealth..

Level your ranger, and in 3 months…come back and read your post.

It doesn’t take a genius to figure out that Mr. Peters didn’t carry out his promise of improving our abilities.

Look at what he stated was a problem back then.

Shouts/Signets/Spirits

Only one shout got a buff, and its still bloody broken and buggy, The only other shout to get a buff was Guard, and it was nerfed and is now back to being terrible.

Signets, We received a speed boost on Signet of the Hunt, so did every other class, That was the only signet that was looked at…All the signets are still mainly used for their passives because the cooldowns are vastly longer then other classes.

Spirits, Still God Awful, and haven’t be improved worth anything…..Which frankly isn’t the most insulting part about it…The most insulting part about Spirits is watching the nitwits in the last State of Game joke about how “Well we don’t wanna do what we did to Spirits for Rangers where we nerfed them and people no longer use them anymore” acknowledging that they know Spirits are bloody useless, but not only that….REPEATING THE SAME MISTAKE with guardian spirit weapons….I mean..If that doesn’t tell you something is not right in the anet development area, i don’t know what does.

If you make a video talking about how you gutted something, you know what caused it to be gutted, and then 2 weeks later, you do the same thing to another class…I doesn’t relay a lot of confidence in your ability to be able to balance the game.
