How to mine cove rich ori on lvl 1 alts

So you have free character slots and want to make money out of them? Well, good, buy bags and use them for extra storage for your TP operations.

But for those who don’t want to bother with the TP, here’s how to mine the rich oricalcum in Cove.

1. Get your main to the Bloodtide zone. Near the middle there’s a heart vendor named Crusader Something. He sells account bound picks that let lvl 1 char to mine orichalcum. Get some for your lvl 1

2. Get a couple of block/deflect/stealth/speed skills unlocked on your lvl 1

3. Head to point Lion via LA

4. Swim all west, then all south from point Lion. Best unlock the SW point just in case

5. Head up north via the cliff between the young karkas and the solo lurker

6. Continue north, passing some young karka. It’s possible to avoid all aggro circles, but in case you get aggroed keep those in mind:
- the aggro circles might be bigger vs lvl 1s
- the key is to avoid the early ranged barrage; search your keybinding for a “look back” option and bind it (you should do this anyway); this will let you to move forward while keeping an eye on the karka; dodge/block/reflect all of the barrage
- if all else fails, do not forget that hitting escape and logging out to charscreen resets all your aggro – or simply ask nearby 80 for a bit of help
- karka champion: most server will have it pulled out to a safe distance; your goal is to get to the ori once…even if you die just stay there in primetime you will be rezzed in no time. Once in position, all you do before exhausting all the picks is log, quickly mine, deposit in bank via inventory, and logout.
- the best way to replace picks is via bank express

I don’t know. Guys did level 54 Fractals of the Mists Grawl Shaman. But of course you know better than them.

As for exquisite rubies, they are a subclass of a larger category called upgrades. There, a 1:5 ratio is not rare…actually the very runes of divinity have it. That’s why it’s a lot better to have more knight/soldier pieces of armor/weapon/trinket and exquisite rubies and heavy duty damage runes instead of divinity. Mind you, that is if you agree with that poster about the need of having that much tank; and even in this hybrid circumstance runes of divinity fail to deliver.

There’s a fairly long list of things I like about the game.

There’s also the list of things I dislike.

Problem is, many of the things I dislike were superbly handled in GW1…and I cannot fathom why GW2 fails in areas where GW1 was superb. I do intend to kitten about it until they get fixed. A couple got fixed today.

No.

ANet is very slow to address our fixes requests, no matter how legitimate. The only recent fix was the sword’s #3. The other significant was fixing some greatsword and scepter attack issues early on.

On the other hand, they’ve made dozens of nerfing fixes, completely destroying the torch and crippling the greatsword. Inexplicably, they also nerfed phantasms, who were weaker than shatter or condition builds to begin with, into oblivion.

You suggested that a glass cannon could just avoid enemy damage. If you had played dungeons at all you would know that unavoidable damage is a fact of life and that everyone takes it from time to time. Survivability is an important consideration for those concentrating on damage as a dead player does no damage. I imagine many of those I rez share your philosophy.

I suggest you go watch the FotM 54 Grawl Shaman vid in the dungeon subforum. There you’ll see rangers using gasp rune the eagle and people sharing my philosophy or rezzing each other. The little extra survivability provided by divinity is completely outshined by the benefits of higher eagle damage.

I have a mix of zerker, valkyrie, and knight pieces.

Did you know that armor/weapons/trinkets have a fairly low crit damage to stats itemization ratio, often as bad as 1:16 compared to item upgrades like exquisite rubies at 1:5.

So, what you did is kitten yourself with valkyrie and zerker getting low crit damage % for ton of stat loss and now you try to make out for it by getting divinity instead of any of the awesome dps runes?

That’s just bad.

No offense, but who are you to judge?
What makes you so God-like in this game that you can belittle someone for what works for them?

I’m not really a fan of “everybody is right for themselves” philosophy. As I said, I have to be blunt about rune of divinity. It’s a bad choice, there is no other way to put it. You may like it, you may not like it, you may stick with it: but if you want to improve consider other runes and upgrade.

On the contrary, there is a reason and it is called playstyle also known as flow. It consists of things like optimal rotation of skills and optimal distance from target and sometimes it extends to what targets at all you should engage in wvw or defines your dungeon role. It is different for condition and power builds.

When you take runes of divinity “because they buff my burning” on an otherwise power build you kitten yourself badly compared to runes that fully enhance your power damage.

Sounds great. But the burn from my activated Virtue does a couple of thousand damage, -from everybody in my party-. Or the closest few people to me in wvw. Extra condition damage is not just for me, it’s for the team. When you talk about optimzation, you seem to mean watching your own big numbers pop up infront of you.

I would say that “playstyle”, is exactly the reason I can put some condition damage in my build if I want to.

You may play any inferior style if you want to. Apparently the guardian virtue burning on ally attack uses the ally’s malice. Yours is irrelevant. But you are free to use whatever excuses you like too for justifying an inferior playstyle.

Let me be blunt: only bad players use rune of divinity.

In dungeons, using divinity means you don’t understand what the strong sides of your character are nor how to maximize them.

In wvw, healing is only worth a fraction of a full stat and your build’s correct playstyle will favor power or condition, not both. While vitality and especially toughness are never lost, trading 60 of them for a lesser damage potential is questionable. Especially on glass cannons maximizing your damage and avoiding enemy damage altogether is the way to go.

In spvp your question would be moot.

However, rune of divinity being bad doesn’t make rubies good though. Runes like scholar/eagle/air will generally outshine them, depending on your exact build.

As a Guardian, traiting for precision (for a glass cannon) would ALSO increase condition damage. With several rather hefty burn options at my disposal, it would not be a bad idea at all to add a rune that added condition damage as well as power. There’s no reason at all to focus on just one when you can have both.

^ That’s just it on my thief i roll with ALL defensive abilities. i can also say noone knows how to fight a thief. i can’t even count the amount of time’s i’ve “Appeared” beside someone only to have them run… thanks for the free backstabs. people have already stated thousands of counters to the thief. yet you guy’s refuse to learn any of them it’s just sad. so ignore that black mist and gaint cottage. we sure as hell ain’t there…. when i dagger storm your zerg back up really slowly that’s the correct counter…

Noone knows how to fight anybody, save for some people who take spvp seriously.

From an esport point of view, I’d consider myself a fairly bad player: I never bothered to learn other classes in any depth, my reaction time isn’t stellar, and my situational awareness can be lacking.

Yet I have 90-100% winrate against all classes (against my own it’s 98%) but thief. Thief is only 80%. Most players really really have no clue how to play GW2. So I understand that most people come to complain without ever trying to learn thief and thief counters, or even more basic things like how to keep 360% awareness to at least 2400 range at all times.

However, consider this: noone ever needed to learn how to counter ranger or engineer. Barely anyone needed to learn counters to necro and elementalist, and only more recently. Warrior, guardian and mesmer have always been beatable as long as you understood their most powerful mechanics like HB.

Thief? Yeah, sure. if you learn to counter thief and you spec to counter thief and you roll an alt thief then they are like any other class…except that they aren’t, because no other class requires you to learn it in such depth just to be able to counter it.

Charged lodestone drop rates, solution?

The TP in this game is much worse than flawed. It’s realistic. In time, more and more of the gold in the game will end up in the top 1% of the players. They don’t really have any use for it, it’s not like they can buy mansions or pay divorce settlements as the rich do in the real world. So they buy legendaries, multiple, on multiple alts.

That’s the reason why the “classic” mmo model will mostly hand soulbound top rewards…so that players are rewarded for playing the game well, not for playing the TP.

That’s also why the “hardcore” mmo model allows for looting and destroying of property. There, one could buy a legendary on the market, but will lose it almost instantly without personal game skill.

As you can see, GW2 has the worst elitist issues of both worlds. Consider yourself lucky if next month lodestones aren’t twice as expensive as they are now.

It’s not about sightseeing, it’s about making money.

You see, you have one problem.

Legendaries are best obtained thru the Trading Post. However, money in this game, as well as the real world, naturally come in the hands of a very select elite. Do you understand the consequences of this fact?

It’s no wonder that the two people I know that have the most legendaries (yes, each has multiples on multiple alts) are the two people who made the most money on the TP. Legendaries have become the plaything of the TP masters. Paying 1000 gold for lodestones is a joke for them. Their ability to pay lots for legendary ingredients drives the prices out of the reach of the average players…forever. Good luck!

However, if you want more survivability, there’s a particular order of replacing zerker gear. The key is the crit damage ratio. For some pieces it is 1% for 16 stat points. For other it is less. For exquisite rubies it is 1% for 5 stat points. Always begin replacing the 16’s first, etc.

With BiS Rabid gear, a staff clone will massively outperform iMage. The clone attacks every 0.75 sec. By the time iMage attacks once, even with Phantasmal Haste, the clone inflicts 2s of burning and 25s of bleed, for a base condition damage of 1,7k. The iMage will do 390 base multiplied by the number of skill activations in those three seconds, and possibly a single bleed.

Its actually 1s of Burning and 7s of Bleeding. 2 and 25 would be a bit silly. It also is 1/3 chance for Vulnerability. The clones also have a 1s attack rate, not 0.75s.

My Rabid gear post was not addressed to you at all. You could run around in town clothes for all I care.

Other posters said many condition builds have no power at all. You, btw, said it’s crit that decides if iDuelist does more damage than iMage. That rules out a hybrid condition+power gear, as there’s no way iMage outdamages hybrid iDuelist.

Which leaves us with the three +condition, no power gear types. They are Rabid (an excellent choice for Mesmer), Shaman (a poor choice) and Apothecary (a poor choice that is also expensive on the TP).

Therefore, the only no power (or base power, or 916 power) condition build worth discussing is Rabid. Since I happen to have played it extensively in both PvE and PvP, here’s the news:

- the core of the build are three staff clones out; it’s not worth taking Phantasmal Haste with this build, so the iDuelist is best used in a combo with an ethereal field; otherwise it’s not really worth the swithcing away from staff, the casting time, the risk of failure and the lower hp.

- similarly to a shatter build, the rabid build is very good at replacing clones. Yet, shattering clones is not the core of the build; particularly Mind Wrack at 916 power is a bad move unless the very finisher.

- Your must have weapons are staff and pistol. There’s no room for the weak iMage under any circumstances.

Of course, everyone is free to play however they like. If somebody feels like playing in Shaman/Apothecary mix with iMage, he’s free to do so. What he is not free to do is claim that “Math” is somehow on his side.

You are so wrong.

The staff clone attacks every .75s. In 4.5s, less than phantasmal haste iMage 4.8s, that sums up to 6 attacks. On average, they’ll cause burning twice (2s) and bleeding twice (10s). In addition, BiS rabid will average 3 bleeds from sharper images (additional 15s of bleed, for a total of 25s).

No, absolutely not. The last thing you want to do when fighting this appparently suicidal thief is bothering with 3/4s casting time and the iMage attack delay/travel time/whatever. The thing you do is insta-spawn 3 clones without any risk of failing, and Cry of Confusion. That’s it.

That’s nonsense. For starters, a staff clone is better than iMage for condition build (on top of being “un-missable”). Moreover, iMage won’t benefit from a number of powerful confusion duration increases that benefit the toon. Finally, the retaliation part has no synergy.

It’s a very weak phantasm.
