I disagree with removing the AOE cap unless there is a very large reduction in damage or serious modification in how those abilities work. If you remove the cap, a team of elementalists would be able to wipe a zerg, or any other class with strong AOE would be able to wipe a zerg and it would just make them way too powerful.

If you didn’t get it, that’s exactly why people want the aoe cap to be removed: to allow small parties to wipe entire zergs, in order to incourage people to not to zerg anymore.

It will not discourage zergs. safety in numbers. 5 people can now wipe 30? Well we want 60 and everyone has to be a Necro ele or ranger built for AoE. Oh your a theif or warrior? can you out AoE a necro or ele? Nope your dead wait in WvW…

Pretty much.

Increasing just harmful AE (things that do damage and apply conditions) to 10 while leaving the boons and heals at 5 means that offense will scale past defense. This in conjunction with the boon hate mechanic (assuming it actually removes boons and puts debuffs on targets so they can’t get a new boon for 5 seconds or so and it isn’t just a passive damage increase) will encourage a more in-your-face style of play instead of the whole 1200 yard mexican stand off styles of play we have now.

When I run epidemic I use corrupt boon and normally find a guardian to target because they tend to have the most boons. Spam scepter to get a ton of bleeds and bam 5 people start melting. If the cap was removed and I was able to put ~25 stacks of bleeds plus all the other conditions on everyone (not even including all the other AoE) very small numbers would be able to wipe very large numbers.

Anyways IF they were to remove or increase the cap they would really need to take a good look at all AoE skills and adjusts them accordingly, not just nerf the damage to the ground.

WVW commander to build on?

I think most commanders should run full P/V/T gear and be as defensive as possible. Its not your damage that’s going to win fights, it’s your leadership. You have to be able to go where ever your need your zerg to go, we act as sheep after all :-) One of the worst things that can happen to a zerg is if the commander dies.

That being said, necros can be super durable so you might be able/want to add in so other damaging stats.

Toughness or Vitality?

As a thief I feel you need to have a mix. Pre-stealth nerf I was running Valk gear (P/V/CritD) and zerker jewels. Build 0/30/30/10/0 so 200 toughness from the trait line plus 100 toughness/70 crit food. Now with the stealth nerf I feel I needed a bit more defense so right now I traded out earrings for soldiers stats. I try to sit around 15k hp and 1500 toughness, this gives me a lot of room to play and my HP doesn’t get drained by random damage.

Yes toughness won’t help you against CD but Vit will only delay the inevitable. If you don’t have proper CD removal in your build it won’t matter if you have Vit toughness or neither.

So both toughness and Vit are both important, you just need to find a balance for your play style and build.

I think some one posted in the other thread about this and said that contesting WP should be only done if inner was being attacked. I think this would be a welcome change but personally do find this to be a notable issue.

Lol, I think you make a solid point. I feel like most people complaining (or discussing?) about the lack of small man/solo WvW rewards are going to run these small man groups regardless. And since its almost a thankless job, they would just like some thing to show for all the hard work they put in for the better of the server.

It’s not that anet “doesn’t” care about WvW players, its that they have to cater to the larger player base which is PvE. And as “real” WvW players why would the rank mean that much to you? You played before, you’ll play after. (unless your not a “real” WvW player) You’ll have a higher rank then most PvE players because your focus is WvW.

Why does everyone want all this 1-5 man gameplay when PvP exists literally two button clicks away for that exact thing?

No offence to you but I think this argument is dumb. There is a big difference between sPvP and WvW. Stats are different, your character is different, and the battle field is different. sPvP is a more “balanced” (for the lack of a better word) game then WvW. Having a small group of 3 or 5 people taking a camp when a group of 10 come rolling through and your small group kills them or holds them off for your server to act on it is much more rewarding then what take place in sPvP. (IMO)

The only problem I see with things like this are griefers (not sure if thats the right word for it) When I’m roaming about and see a 1v1 or 1v2 fight I normally will stop ans watch or just leave them be but more often then not when I’m fighting, others will join in and make the 1v1/2 a very lopsided fight. I think it would be hard to record things like only 1v1 fights in stats and stopping people from interrupting these small fights.

EDIT: If they were to implement dueling of some sort then I could see it but as it stands now with no way to regulate the amount of people fighting I don’t see how it would work. Also Title farming would happen. A friend on another server lets you kill him/her a bunch.

Fix Tier 8

I don’t think they will want to implement something that isn’t consistent through all tiers. Having that in other tiers would be a bigger problem.

I understand, but the problems the glicko ghetto has is not consistent through all the tiers so it’s logical to come with a solution that may go outside the 1-7 consistency.

Thing is it is consistent, problem with T8 is there is no where to go. Your score will just drop until it hits a floor.

That in itself is unique to being the bottom. I understand the system is working consistently, but the end results are inconsistent only on t8.

Finding a solution that is consistent with all 8 tiers is way more work than necessary. Having winner of t8 move up and loser of t7 move down is a very elegant way of solving the issue without messing with every tier. Who knows, maybe the coding for wvw setup makes this impossible.

Ah well. Someone that gets paid to do this is hopefully figuring something out. I just hope they don’t take a long time.

Ah yeah I didn’t look at it that way but that make sense as well. Though I do agree that your idea would work great for T7/T8, I know it would be bad for T1/T2. I can’t say for the middle servers.

I don’t think they should straight up “uncap” AoE. Right now its at 5 bump it up to 10 and see how that works. Fully uncapping AoE could end up being a bigger problem in the end. You say is will give the small groups a chance or discourage zerging. I think it would make AoE to powerful and out shine single target damage altogether. Which anet has talked about in the past.

Over all I don’t think fully uncapping it is the right way to go but thats not saying 5 person limit is the right place either. I just don’t want them to over do it and fully nerf or buff something to a extreme and it back fire and brake part of the game.

They want new people coming into WvW without feeling like they are behind everyone else. Good idea to get new people into WvW, but punishes the long term WvW players. In my opinion I don’t mind it since new people are playing.

I wouldn’t say punishes the long term players, all the stats you have are still there and those players will rank up much faster then the new players. It doesn’t do anything negative to you just starts you off even.

I’m not say eles are OP and Yes that video make that 1 dude look OP but tbh that wouldn’t fly for vary log in a group of good players or if there was 1 or 2 good players there. Most the time no one was focusing him and when they did he ran and they stopped pressuring him. Over all hes obviously a good player but I don’t think this constitutes Eles as OP.

IMO much like the thief “over powered” is based off the skill of the player not the class. I rarely die in open field 1v1s but this one ranger beat me, the whole class must be OP and needs a nerf!

Anyways the video is impressive! Nice Job to him/her.

I do not pay for siege. I use about 20 omegas per week just for laughs, never once have I spent money on a golem. 100 alpha donations a week isn’t unheard of. You need to give your pugs more kisses.

I predict nerf to mug and backstab damage indirectly. They will nerf crit damage % or something stupid in attempt to lessen backstab burst.

Mug will receive 50% damage nerf.

Thief will then become the worst class in the game, hands down.

EDIT: Even a banner/kick/rampage spec warrior will tool on a thief with these things nerfed as well.

I doubt they will nerf backstab damage as a skill, Yes it does high damage but its limited to every 4+ seconds. Considering backstab damage is only complained about for PvP, the likelihood of being backstabed every 4 seconds is rather low.

Mug I wouldn’t expect a nerf either (but who know with anet) Its ok to good damage on a ~45 second CD. Yes its instant and can be chained with other skills but Steal has more uses then just damage along with it having to be traited. If anything I would see them moving it higher on the trait tree but that would mean it would have to be replaced with one of the higher traits and correct me if I’m wrong but I don’t know that they have moved traits like that before.

I played 4 hours WvW on thief today, didn’t notice the 1 more second having any difference. I was still easily winning 1v2 battles, even with the fixed culling(or escaping by chaining stealth, again no problem). However, this 1 second broke pve for me(s/d 30 sa build) great balancing, anet.

LOL so zero thief stealth change. What a phuckin joke. The WvW thief stealth keeps alot of potential WvW players at bay since it is RIDICULOUSLY op. Say what you want..“Spam AOE whatever” you are wrong. The Thief stealth in WvW is inherently wrong. It is OP and requires zero skill in WvW at this point. It is a zero honor class to play and zero skill to rule. I have a level 9 thief that can dominate players in WvW. It’s a joke playing a backstab thief in WvW. If you take ANY damage as a thief in WvW, you should unstealth. If you attack in WvW, you should have a LARGE cool down with that. Thieves are MEANT to be opportunists. Not Predators. That is inherently unfair.

I would like to see video of your level 9 dominating in WvW. I’ll leave it at that since its quite obvious where this thread is going to go.

Stealth

Just to clear something up for you. The addition of 1 second to revealed does a lot more then it sounds. It effects a lot of traits that rely on stealth which were the core of a lot of builds. But besides that…Culling be fixed…

With culling on, (pre patch) A thief would stealth for 3-4 seconds then attack and get the revealed debuff wait 3 seconds then restealth. Due to culling that 3 seconds revealed seemed more like 1-2 seconds to you. Every time the thief would leave stealth it would take some time for the model to load on your screen making it feel like the thief is jumping in and out of stealth like there was no cool down.

Now with culling gone when the thief leaves stealth hes there and can’t use culling as a tool (intended or not) so the thief is visible for a full 4 seconds. This is a big deal from the thieves perspective, due to normally low HP and defense 4 seconds is a long time when most of the defense/healing/condition removal comes from stealth.

From what I can tell its close to game breaking for thieves now but its only the day after the patch, people haven’t had time to really theorycraft new builds and what not so its up in the air. As for other classes fight thieves, all i heard last night on TS what wow thieves are bad now and OH! killed another thief. So I think its game breaking for thieves of sub par skill levels. Thats my take on it at least…

it was dagger auto attacks (wild strike and lotus strike specifically)

and at some point I will have to properly sit down and try and work out max possibles, quick calcs never get me to numbers others state (last calc got to 3983 power with 200 on kill food, 25 might stacks, blood lust, sharpening stones etc) I must keep missing things, dropped 110 from zikorys calcs and almost a thousand from googles…

I used http://gw2buildcraft.com/calculator/ and After toying with it to maximize power I ended up with 4313 power and 122% crit damage. Thats with full ascended infused (with the +5 power) Rings earrings amulet and back. Full zerker gear with 5 runes of the scholar and 1 ruby orb. 25 stacks of bloodlust and might and 200 power from the food after a kill. 90 power from assassins signet. This is assuming your running a build that has 30 in deadly arts and critical strikes. Remember I was only trying to maximize the amount of power, the 6th rune of the scholar would probably better then a ruby orb. and I don’t know many builds that would go 30/30/x/x/x.

My Take on the Stealth "Nerf"

To start, Pre-patch I was running D/D 0/30/30/10/0 Hidden killer/Shadow’s Rejuvenation. I’m sure most thieves know the build well so no reason to jump into it but I got about 5 hours last night to really play WvW in a few BL’s and EBG. Here’s my take on how I felt the build needed to be changed and how I feel about the over all change of stealth. I’d also like to note that I’m on Blackgate T1 and I was doing solo roaming and with the new patch to WXP basically small groups were close to nonexistent as most everyone was zerging to get that rank up. (Thats a different discussion)

Change to the build: As most of you know by now hidden killer is/was bugged (was last night I don’t know if it was hot fixed or not) So that a side, I didn’t change my build at all but did find that I was taking much more damage and with less time in stealth to heal I had to change out some gear for more toughness. So now I’m running a Mix of Valk/zerker/soldiers sitting me around ~16.5K HP and 1.6k toughness (without food buffs) In the few small groups I found I was still able to maintain the control of the fight (1v2-3) just like before, the hardest part was relearning the timing on C&D. Also I found that I could no longer sit in the middle of a enemy zerg and ninja kill people. They were on to me to fast and would just AoE the area till I died or ran away. (Who knew AoE was a good counter to thieves…hum) But I was successfully able to surf the tail end of a zerg for a very long time getting quite a few kills.

Right now its hard to make a strong judgement call if this build will still be fully viable. There are to many things that could have accounted for it being seemingly easy on the battlefield. With the new content, It could have been more pugs or PvE players that I was killing or people were just overwhelmed by all the red names everywhere. (I’d like to note I very rarely saw many upleveled player)Who knows…but right now in WvW for me, my play style and build the stealth “nerf” wasn’t a huge hit on my performance. I’m looking forward to the next few weeks once the rank farming dies down and use thieves can get back out there full force and keep people crying about our class.

Thanks for reading, I’m not really looking for a huge discussion, I just wanted to point out my success with the “nerf” and with all the negative posts yesterday I think a lot of people were ready to write off the thief as a class. Lastly, Sorry if this offends anyone but I feel that this change really puts a gap between Thieves and people that play a thief. After talking to some other veteran roamers, it seems that they are easily beating thieves that they would normally not have but there are still some thieves out there that just stomp them into the ground like nothing changed.

TL;DR Don’t feel the nerf was that bad for good thieves. Bad thieves were hit hard because they can’t bandwagon to a win.

How is everyone getting hit with 6k mugs? I run a 1.2k toughness thief and Mug hits me for about 3.5k…I mean if your running GC expect to be hit hard…

its because they take the full out zerker thief hits, add a little extra to them and then think there the average thief hits.

And even then they are only concerned about the burst nature in pvp and not the fact that its on a 45 second base cooldown and such.

There was someone complaining about 3k auto attacks against 3k armour when my (albeit not 100% accurate) calculations put the required stats for that at around 110% crit damage and 4289 power which I don’t think the average thief runs with :/

I don’t think a thief can have that much power…with full might and bloodlust stacks along with all ascended infused with +5 power. The most I could squeeze out was 4093 power and thats with plate of Truffle Steak Dinner which grants 200 power on kill…

Edit: It didn’t factor in the signets passive power so 4093. Fixed above.

Well I don’t plan on changing anything. From what I can tell I’m going to drop a bit of damage for a bit of defense and stick with the D/D hidden killer style. (I know Hidden killer is bugged right now, thats fine for the time being as its a bug and probably will be fixed) If that is completely broken then I’m going to find a new D/D or D/P build. I love D/D so I’ll find a way to make it work with the way I want to play.

Think about this, In PvE you can kill mobs solo over and over for little XP or your can farm group events for bigger XP. Which one would you do if your trying to farm XP? As a zerg you can cover more objectives faster. WvW has always been this way but that doesn’t mean killing yaks and camp flipping aren’t any less important.

Another way to look at it is when a new MMO comes out (say the release of GW2) Everyone rushes to get to cap level and farm the hell out of everything, at some point most people die out of that and find more fun ways to spend there time. This will be the same…everyone is farming WXP and zerging is the best way…at some point people calm down and it will go back to how it was (to a point) zerging will always be there but you’ll end up finding more roamers once everyone gets to ranks they feel happy about.

I guess I just misunderstood some of the points of the new patch. I may have heard it from somewhere other than the devs, but I thought this patch was going to implement changes that would discourage zerging. Again, I may have made that up in my mind.

I’m not really sure how they could go about discouraging zergs with out some major changes in the game its self and this late after release it would have to be a very VERY good change to keep players from getting upset about it. But as it stands now Zerging is the best way to take keeps, defend keeps, do anything really. As long as one server zergs, all servers zerg. There is no way around it. Give it a week or two and see how things play out, either the zerg ball fights will stay or get worse or the commanders will find new strategies to handle them and they will die out a bit. But over all get used to it zergs won’t go away.

No, Basilisk is a stun not a daze. It’d be stupid to turn someone into stone, into a stone statue that can still move.

The problem was that if you stun breaked out of Basilisk, you still were unable to move or dodge for the full duration because of a hidden immobilize effect that wasn’t removed.

And thank God they finally fixed this. As a thief, if another thief would jump me with Basilisk, I would just Shadowstep away. Avoiding the backstab, however, not being able to dodge the inevitable HS spam by noobs that would follow it.

Now I can get out of the backstab setup, dodge the HS, without having to blow my Shadow Return, and instead set them up for the backstab myself.

Where I don’t condone HS spam…how can they be noobs if they know they can spam HS and you can’t avoid it? Sounds like a solid game plan…lol

Thats not true, devs stated that culling was an issue in WvW…Even if is was small groups models were still taking longer to load, when chaining stealth the thief model would drop and have to reload every few seconds and making it seem for the opposing player to feel like the thief was stealth for a few more seconds then he really was.

Sorry but any video pre today is outdated as far as culling gos.

Mug nerf sorely needed

To all trying to defend thief nerfs. You’ll never get through to these people, yesterday it was nerf stealth, now its not nerfed enough and mug needs a nerf. If mug gets nerfed its going to be pistol whip needs a nerf. It was the same with rogues in wow, nerf nerf nerf. It sucks and I’m guilty of trying to defend things to these trolls but its best to stop replying. Let there QQ post get drowned out by all the other QQ posts. Sorry for the rant but the thief forums are horribly toxic and full of more non thieves or thieve haters then actual thieves. Go look around in the other class forums and they have good discussion about the class and are helpful. Any thread I’ve seen some one asking for help there’s at least one reply that is talking kitten about thieves. /end rant :-/

I think they want people queue’ing and playing regardless of their reasoning.

Maybe but like a lot of the little annoyances I could see it as something people would complain about, But on the flip side it would start “pugs” queuing stuff and saving the WvW’ers some coin.

100 gold is a lot to come by in PvE. Cap’s and/or vids or it didn’t happen :-) Btw… I exclude dungeons as PvE items. They are a separate instance, literally.

For the 5k badges concept, it’s not a bad one. You do realize though the dreaded JP’ers can then become a commander in under 2 months 10K sounds a bit high though.

TBH In any ok to good zerg that happens to run across a few or more good fights will net you much more badges per hour then the JPs. To farm out 5k or more badges via the JP is crazy talk. IF implemented some people will farm them (because people will always farm stuff) but it wont be as easy as 100g. You can farm 100g in a week if your lucky or have the time to do so. OR drop ~$80 and bam commander. I doubt many people will think they have to run the JP for 6 months to get the tag, most wouldn’t bother.

After all these months of play, it’s quite obvious Thieves are the Dev’s pet favorite. It’s not going to change any time soon. They obviously believe frustration is fun. How and why they come to this conclusion, Idk. But, it’s the only explanation for this…..

I simply imagine a bunch of 20 something Dev’s giggling as they watch Thieves decimate players. Like it’s, “ZOMG… awesome, Brah!” or wth….

I don’t know about “Dev’s pet favorite” If that was the case they would have not added the one second and said we fixed culling! Go kitten your self…but they made a change and want to see it play out. Its better then adding to much and fully breaking the class then having to fix it.

If WvW commander status is meant to be character bound like WXP then make it an unlock, like the other WXP unlocks, visible only to those who already have the commander book in PvE. Leave badges out of it, since they can be acquired from puzzles and the ability to farm them isn’t highly correlated with WvW ability. Since they’re now a viable currency, a player shouldn’t have to choose between new equipment and a tag.

You could also integrate the proposed icon colour/commander ranking system into this by making this a series of unlocks. This would help casuals to identify experienced commanders, but it wouldn’t be so vital that commanders would be forced to farm WXP at the cost of their efficacy.

The only reason I say use badges is that anet like adding more currency to new things. For example accessories for laurels – they added ectos as a currency plus the laurels. IF they were to implement something like we are suggesting I wouldn’t be surprised to see it cost 100g X badges and X WXP rank…based off what we have seen anet do so far.

You can always add WXP rank into it now as well.

Personally I would change the way the commander tag works and separate the tag from PvE and WvW. Meaning you can buy the 100g tag in PvE and use it in PvE. For WvW you would need X amount of badges and X WXP rank to buy it. For those that have the badge currently get it refunded as a one time token that can be traded for either the WvW or PvE tag.

I thought that ANet said in an interview that the CD to stealth (revealed) was going to happen when exiting stealth regardless of how you exit stealth. Did I misunderstand or remember incorrectly?

They did say that in the SotG but after review they decided against it as they felt that plus culling fix would be a bit to much based on there internal testing. There is a Dev Post on the thief forums about it.

Im just waiting for the thieves to start claiming they are now underpowered. Its coming, I would almost guarantee it.

As for the fixes, just have to see how it works out. Always takes a bit to really start seeing the differences, and culling alone is a pretty substantial change (not just for thieves).

That is all.

I would have to agree, No one can state either way this early. Basing it off the few fights you might have had on the first day a major patch is released isn’t enough grounds to make a solid statement. The one second might have a effect on the stealth related traits and I feel that will be the biggest “nerf” but as for 1 extra second out of stealth probably won’t be that big of a deal and good thieves will adapt accordingly.

Don’t forget that, outside of a 100b warrior or another thief, there really isn’t any class that could kill a thief that quickly.

A Mesmer can range burst down an unwary glass cannon thief in a couple of seconds (GS 4, 2, 3, F1 should just about do it)

That combo won’t come close to killing even a glass cannon thief. And in WvW, everyone is rocking PVT gear.

Bad troll is bad imo…saying everyone is wearing PVT when he was stating a Mesmer could kill a GS thief…Seems to me hes referring to a mesmer is Dps gear not PVT. Stop stretching to try and make you point…

Let me ask you, Its ok to drop a thief in 3 to 6 seconds using haste but its not ok for a thief to drop you in 3 to 6 seconds using stealth? More often then not a thief will stealth 3 to 4 times in a fight, that means they will be not stealth for 9 to 12 seconds now with the change is 12 to 16 seconds. Now that culling has been removed its going to be a real 12-16 seconds not effected by not being able to see the thief. You have no evidence on how the addition of 1 second on revealed and culling will effect the class and all 5 of your videos are pre-patch which makes them completely irrelevant at this point.

I hate to say L2P and all but all those videos are of very good thieves vs people that think they can stand toe to toe with a thief (a duelist class) in a duel. Also I run a very similar build and play style to Yishis and I can’t do what he does as good as he can.

As we played with the stealth changed mentioned in the SotG, we recognized that in conjunction with the change to culling this was an unpredictable change to make. We also felt that it was too big of a hit to these stealth professions, so we ended up pulling that change in favor of just increasing revealed duration by 1 second.

So you were taking a blatant glitch/bug/exploit (culling) being fixed and thus “nerfing” thief survivability because of said blatant glitch/bug/exploit being fixed into account when you were balancing?

What the actual Feline?

No culling in spvp last I checked.

I don’t see how that refutes or contradicts what I said at all? The fact remains that they still considered what essentially was an exploit into their balancing.

Because they only balance classes based on WvW scenarios where bugs are rampant, such as culling.

They balance classes based on popular demand. If everyone started complaining that 100 blade warriors hit to hard they get nerfed to.

I don’t think they should have touched stealth this patch. With the removal of culling they should have let it play out for a week and see how it worked. Culling could be the nerf stealth needed, If it was still an issue take a look at the other options like adding 1 second to revealed or adding revealed when leaving stealth. This feels like blizzard its balancing the classes, change a bunch of stuff at once and see what happens.

Personally the only thing that seems like its going to be a issue for most thieves is the removal of culling. Every thief has learned there class while culling was an issue, which mean we are all going to have to relearn our class (to a point obviously, skills didn’t change) This of course depends on how big of a effect culling has on thieves and stealth. Also while I don’t feel like 1 second is going to be a huge factor, It will add up and kitten quite a few build…
