This is a guide to my sentinel frontline build. the vid contains clips of my research, and in it I am actually learning as i go. my skill is quite mediocre in these clips, and the first half of the footage is about 2 months old. i can do more things with the build now, but this is a start for purposes of the guide.

WHY SENTINEL FRONTLINE?

it is well established that the ranger is a good roamer, duelist and small gang fighter. however, i am not after these roles while creating my builds and playing my profs. in my personal view, WvW prowess and achievement are demonstrated by victory in few vs. many scenarios (which means high efficiency for your server), guild vs. zerg (when outnumbered), and gvg (against competent guilds). bearing this in mind, i wanted to create a ranger that could survive and contribute meaningfully in these environments.

Cleric/Apothecary – regen builds are not useful when you’re heavily outnumbered and taking a lot of burst damage. Any “regen bunker” build can only withstand the focus fire of 3-4 competent opponents.

Knights- low vitality does not work well with GvG/GvZ. some profs work well with 14-15k HP, like eles, thieves and cleric guards. but ranger does not.

PVT/Sentinel – balance between high base power, toughness and vitality. Sentinel gives most base vitality without giving up much power and vit, so it’s easier to incorporate knights and zerker pieces without giving up survivability.

Remove downed state from PvP.

I know that probably has been a post like that previously but dont get me wrong, downed state is very useful in Dungeon and generally PvE and in many occasions in WvW, but is completely annoying and useless in PvP. For example something that happened to everyone, you were dueling someone and you beat him while he`s on downed state you are trying to finish him and someone else takes advantage of your low health and defeats you and you neither got a kill or had the time to escape because you were busy FINISHING THE PREVIOUS PLAYER!!! i mean what??? and thats just one example of why downed state doesnt have place to an intense game feature such as PvP! Anet if you want your game to have at least a chance in Esports little things like that, have to change!

After over a minute (a VERY long time in pvp) of getting a player down, finally, and just about to “fishish” him, and another player stops me as I am ALREADY into the finishing move.

I don’t understand and it doesn’t seem logical that I am in the position of killing, already past up, on my way down and I am stopped by a player who doesn’t do a darned thing but hit me once?

WHAT THE HECK!?!

I agree!!! Get RID of the downed state in PVP, the mechanic doesn’t belong.

Dang, I wish all those people that want to Pay2Win would do so. Then the exchange of Gold to Gems rate would drop considerably. Sadly, it seems few take advantage of said P2W. =(

Since one can’t make enough gold to buy any amount of gems that would makes a difference, the P2W is semi-valid.

That said, I hate it. I’d like to see gems at level where they are “uncomfortable” but not “impossible”.

Gold isn’t easy to make in this game no matter what anyone says.

I ran my tail end off for all of WvW Season One in WvW for days, not hours, and all I had after one month? 150 gold 98% of which had to be used FOR WvW “end game” items that are needed just to stay alive solo in WvW.

There is nothing in this game that saves any player who is overwhelmed by a zerg, not a single one, oh, wait, mesmers and thieves can do it… Warriors and Guardians traited correctly can do it, and hmmm… Necros seem to make it out of fights even during a zerg, so that leaves… oh, the Ranger, who doesn’t have any of the tools to make enough DPS to make as much gold as others (how is this balanced in any way), the Ranger who doesn’t get half the badges because they can’t condition or DPS enough most of the time in a huge zerg hitting a tower or even sometimes a keep. So P2W somewhat – applies to some here as well, since with just a few badges and a tiny bit of gold you can be at least partially into good gear and ascended trinkets. The Ranger is the only one who gets left in the cold – even with the best of gear and the best of all traits available. P2W isn’t available as much to Rangers and the gap between Rangers and all others is blinding at times in WvW.

The P2W argument will be around forever but I think the real argument should be that there is very little documentation on this game for players to be able to learn enough to working around what information is lacking, is not balanced and is not accomplishable by anything except extraordinary means, i.e. days of time in which family, friends, job and home are ignored while trying to have “fun” when so many others don’t have jobs, don’t have obligations and don’t have anything but time. But even with time, money is the only logical and viable way to “buy gems” because of the cost ratio of gold to gems.

Defeated State

If you are a small group that work on killing a huge blob, mass ressing a defeated player is one of your main enemy. The feeling when you killed 10 players by your initial push to reduce your enemy blob from 80 to 70 just to see they are being ressed back by their blob. As the battle prolonged, the small group will eventually lose due to no sustain/utility on CD.

This mechanism also defeat the purpose of defending a keep when you are overwhelmed. What is the point of defending a keep with sieges when your enemy blob are able to mass ress every defeated players thus making their numbers to never go down=no breathing space for the defender.

How to fix this? Simply making a player unable to ress a defeated player if he is in combat. In order to ress a defeated player you need to be out of combat. I hate how this game has been dumb downed to go blob or go home. Please make this happen Anet.

p/s: Defeated state != Downed state.

The “downed state” should be limited to or just done away with. Since during any zerg blob one can’t even get off a single dodge or healing let alone trying to escape, is useless and is, again, disheartening in the game experience. If I have died, great, if I am downed, then why isn’t my “knock down” ever knocking down a single player? Why can’t it be different for WvW in that it can knock all down and give ONE a chance to get away?

The rezzing thing? They should be able to, but the smaller side has no chance to rez their players, the timing for being “dead” needs to be exteneded quite a bit or get rid of it altogether, which I would not enjoy but it sure would be more fair than watching others get rezzed, you don’t and your side is wiped out your side has better skills and in a fair fight the opposing force would lose – end of story – justice is served and the skillful win the day.

The F2 pet skills...

Why do they fail when the pet is moving? The game is all about using skills on the move.

It’s very annoying to wait for the pet to use one simple skill.

I find it unfair how many times my “pet” has not been able to save me even though his skills SAY he will.

It’s unfair to tell a player that a skill “will do this” but it really doesn’t.

That is not truth in gaming – gaming needs to be fair – and if the f2 key doesn’t work, it should be removed or replaced with a skill that DOES work, like now.

If this were any other kind of business and an “error” this “large” on a product was seen, it would be recalled.

As it is, I can’t even 1v1 a single player unless they are just really bad players or are dying anyway.

My world is WvW and without the skills to survive in there, the game is flat and humorless since dying all the time isn’t fun for anyone.

The "Gold = Everything" Problem.

Currency driven gameplay is indeed part of the problem. Farming a currency and then buying something is simply boring while farming for the item you want is more fun.

Lets take mini’s for example. Who still cares about them? They are just some gem-store items. It would be way more fun if they could drop from specific dungeons and mobs and so on. It would make farming them more fun and would be a better reason to get your stuff. Now you farm gold and buy them. That is boring.

Of course it also has to do with the fact that Anet wants to sell gems and when gold is worth a lot there is more reason for people to buy gems.

some people may say they don’t like that because they prefer farming gold or they don’t like to need to do one specific dungeon to get that one mini for example. However when the drops are non account-bound (and while a few special should be, most should not be) then those people are still able to buy them with gold. The difference is that then people have an option while now everybody is forced to do it the more boring gold grind way.

It’s a problem I takes multiple times about in threads where I talked about how the micro transaction focus to generate income (in stead of expansion based focus) is bad for the game.

Probably the best posting about “money” period. We want rewards, not gold.

If the “item” we are looking for has an “if/then” times 1000 with permeatations that can be mixed and matched, there would be an uncountable WAY to get each and every item in the game without “gold”.
.
Gold is a good thing. What? You just said…. NO, I said IF.
.
But what if only certain items were put into this model – things that are not impossible to find but take six to eight months to put “together” from the above model of a very complex “if/then” trail that is so convoluted that it would be rare to see two people following the same path – but it can happen mathematically.
.
I don’t know if anyone can see where I am going – that the items we want more than anything are better than what others are willing to go to more FOR. So we need more challenging ways to get TO that “item”, yes it is content but what RICH content for what could be the crowning achievement that any player can accomplish and shows just as much or more than a legendary.
.
I have grand ideas for this game – as I know many others do as well..
.
The gold is a commodity that is traded for another commodity – all well and good.
.
Those of us who need a challenge to find items to put together our ascended items should be given a hearing at Anet. Not jumping puzzles, but intelligent puzzles that have fighting, logic, NO MATH (!), and some choosing that gives us a unique experience while being long enough to warrant the “item’s worth”.
.
Anet is doing a good job on the game, now they just need to make it more dimensional and brain-worthy.

Healing Skill calculations (Updated...again!)

I think they’re all(for the most part) mindless sheep. Rangers are(in my mind anyway) loners and individualists by nature. That’s why the shed the trappings of civilization to live closer to nature.

And as individuals have shown, some will prosper where others will perish. Such is the fate of those that walk the path of life alone.

No, no we’re not all sheep. And in that we are in danger in this game at all times from those who don’t want to hear what we have been saying since Pre-Release.

Some of us have tried to help this game BE more honorable and many of us are Rangers.
.
Point in fact, I get an infraction every single time I say a thing about Ranger in any forum no matter what I am saying.
.
It’s not the Rangers who have an honor problem.

A whole year: Time for another go

If you ragequit your Ranger after that, then you’re probably better off playing a Warrior.

Overall there have been some improvements to the class, but also a whole lot of nerfs and I think the nerfs still overshadow the buffs. There is another big nerf coming on the 10th of December, but also a lot of small buffs.

Some of the big nerfs:
- up to 50% damage reduction on many pet attacks
- Guard can no longer make the pet go up or down ledges or walls.
- pet max distance from Ranger halved (leash range)
- shortbow range decreased from 1200 to 900
- quickness reduced from 100% to 50% (all classes)
- quickness on pet swap trait moved from 5 points to 30 points
- Search & Rescue can no longer revive dead players, only downed.
- Signet of the Beastmaster trait moved from 10 points to 30 points
- Endurance Regeneration trait reduced from 50% to 25% (10th of December)
- Healing Spring no longer gets Vigor from trait every tick
- Longbow Barrage damage reduced by 50% (undocumented)

Some of the buffs:
- Longbow now has stealth on Hunter’s Shot.
- Longbow attack speed increased
- Longbow Point Blank Shot range increased
- Greatsword Maul damage increased
- Greatsword Counterattack can be used on the move
- Nature’s Voice trait added. Allows for a build with permanent Regeneration and Swiftness by using Guard every 10 seconds.
- Spirits Unbound trait moved from 30 to 20 points (10th of december)
- Bark Skin increased from 30% to 50% damage reduction (10th of december)
- Remorseless now also triggers with stealth from Longbow’s Hunter’s Shot
- Spotter gives 150 Precision
- Signet of Stone passive gives 150 Toughness
- underwater weapons improved
- Vigor on pet swap trait now works for all pets (used to be only birds)
- Might on pet swap trait also applies 3 stacks of might to the ranger (10th of december)
- Enlargement now benefits from other signet traits (10th of december)
- Axe offhand Path of Scars does more damage and pulls
- Warhorn Call of the Wild is now a Blast Finisher
- Brown Bear special removes 2 conditions instead of 1 from allies (not underwater) and has a much better animation.
- Pet health increased by a lot in PvE (not in PvP, nor WvW)
- Reef Drake is a new pet.

I like many of the buffs, but I also disagree with many of the nerfs.

- Search & Rescue can no longer revive dead players, only downed.


If this one had ever worked for me, I’d be sad it’s been “nerfed” , as it is, it’s just been corrected to what some of us had to put up with – it just never worked for me in any build or situation – not even downed players helped in a timely manner, like before I was dead…

What’s funny and a bit confusing is that computer code is reusable and very easy to put in and out of any patch – so your comments are doubly painful to savvy players.

If something is op in meaningless fight anet won’t nerft it. Thief stealth is good example.

All fights in WvW are utterly meaningless anyway. The winning team is decided solely by total coverage.

I absolutely disagree.

When I am running a map at 3am PST alone, very alone, I can turn the score to a larger score just but turning sentries and running dolyaks.

Where did you get the idea that a single player in any game against other real players just doesn’t matter? We do. We always have.

We are still learning to be a team on most servers.

Some are not helping by being negative, running from fights and being debbie downers instead of being the mentors who are badly are needed on all servers.

Just wanted to share that Outlook have noreplay@guildwars2.com blacklisted by their automatic system.

I wasn’t receiving my authorization e-mails so i got suspicious and went to check my safe/blocked list where i found out that this e-mail has been moved from safe to blocked.

I’ve contacted the Outlook support guys than and turned out this e-mail got reported falsely and filtered by their system afterwards.

So now it should be clear but if you have any problems with authorization e-mails check your blocked lists specially if you’re client of those Microsoft e-mail services.

Another good reason never to use emails to invite anyone to anything. In game invites are the best and most secure way to handle all future beta adventures. Please Anet, everything else is in game – you can do this too. No more email connected messes.

We have today received an email that we are.

We are very excited about it.

we are now, according to the Mail, certain data of the players give out that are in the guild and want to join:

Player name, Accname, email and also the password.

If this e-mail then also right?

Because I never thought that Anet in e-mails asking for passwords

And this is the exact reason I thought it was a scam in the game when one of my guilds started asking for email – that means it has to go through a person other than those at ANET.

Um, you guys do get security, right? I am “just” computer security certified geek and I can tell you right now you are opening a huge can of mess waiting to happen.

Why can’t guilds connect in game through Anet and the email not be available to the guilds?

I guess I am asking for some real security rather than a piecemeal beta solution that I am pointing out is a disaster waiting to happen and I could get banned for just saying it?

Infract all you want, my gosh, this is more than I can take as a computer professional. Anet, please, I am respectful as anyone can possibly be, I am a veteran, and a grandmother but my heck and gone, please do something about the “email” necessity – our name and our number at the end of our names as well as the guild representing should be enough – email should not have to go through people we have most likely never met in our lives.

I trust people I meet by intuition, as do we all mature adults, but in the world of “I am not who I profess to be” internet, we must ask for some safety.

WvW Season One Rewards Are Unacceptable

I am sure that over the course of the next week that you will see countless threads popping up complaining about the rewards found in the WvW Season One reward chest. I don’t want to waste your time, but to be blunt something needs to be done. The rewards are… not only underwhelming, but for the health of WvW moving forward I feel that the current reward is inexcusable. Rewards in for events in GW2 (and any game) serve a few key functions:

1. Motivate players to partake in an event.
2. Provide adequate time/reward compensation to players who participate.
3. Grant players a feeling of accomplishment.

The current WvW Season One rewards do none of the above as the same reward for a 7 week undertaking is equal to about 30-40 minutes farming Frostgorge Sound. The implications may be greater than you previously anticipated. The full impact of the lackluster Season One reward should not be underestimated. Many servers in Bronze/Silver league worked diligently to recruit and motivate players who had never participated in the WvW game mode. Given the insignificant current reward getting people to try (and continue to play WvW) will only become harder. If no action is taken, when WvW Season 2 rolls around fewer players will be motivated to participate because the reward is not worth the investment of their time. Furthermore, as I’m sure you can see, the vast majority of the Season One participants feel that the reward was inadequate compared to their time investment. Finally, I think that it is safe to say that the current rewards provide absolutely no sense of accomplishment for anyone.

So, here is my clear and concise recommendation:

Amend the WvW Season One reward chest by providing the following-

1. Provide a unique, worthwhile reward for every player on every server who earned the reward key. Here are some suggestions:
a. An ascended quality back piece with a unique skin that is only awarded at the end of a season. (Think Karka Shell or Fractal Capacitor)
b. Utilize the release of the upcoming ascended armor release and reward players with a single set of ascended armor.
c. A single unique weapon skin (allow each player select one weapon from a set) that is only awarded in the WvW Season chests.

2. Remove the 250 count from the Gold/Silver/Bronze Dolyak finishers and make them permanent until the beginning of Season 2. The top 3 servers in each league should be given the gold for first, silver for second, and bronze for third. Essentially you would be giving 9 servers finishers rather than only 3. Clearly this would provide less insensitive for players to rush to a handful of servers and more intensive for players to participate spread throughout the range of servers so that nobody has to deal with a 4-5 hour queue.

Many are suggesting that we as a community simply accept the current reward and move on. However I would encourage you to consider the long term implications of inadequate rewards on the GW2 playerbase between now and the end of Season 2. ArenaNet has these forums so that the players have a clear channel of communication to the developers. Luckily, ArenaNet does listen and is taking strides at showing that with the Collaborative Discussion as well as removing the Flamekissed Light Armor Skin being removed/reworked. Make your voice heard.

As a resident of Ft. Aspenwood, the winner of the Silver competition, I not only agree, I am witnessing exactly what this thread was created to avert, an exodus from WvW by brand new WvW players who are sorely disappointed that they wasted so much time for so little.

Now that the “season” is over the population in WvW on Ft. Aspenwood has dropped appreciably – and it is in direct proportion to the rewards for the meta that people are overwhelmingly disappointed over.

WvW is the game that Guild Wars was intended to be – the end game with multiple levels of good, but this one bad is enough to stop good players from doing WvW for “other” content – and know this Anet, we NEED those players. They were happy when they thought some great reward was due.

Below is a posting about not getting much for doing a LOT of dolyak guarding, repairing and running camps over and over and over to maintain what is being seen as a + in our column to get closer to a “win”.

Seasons need to mean something.

We fought our hearts out and received, what, for our first place in Silver? Gah! Not even gems??? What kind of “chest” did the second and third place get? I am sure I don’t want to know at this point.

Anet, we respectfully ask that you guard WvW for the future – it is the bread and butter of the game.

Perplexity Runes are definitely on our radar. I talked with our designers about this and you can expect some changes to this rune-set in the near future. I don’t have specific details on what changes we’ll be making, but I figured I’d let you guys know that we are looking at it.

Now that we just sigh in WvW when the message flashes that she’s somewhere in the world – Scarlet needs a reason to be – since players are not going to the events enough to even stop half of the mobs and that makes the whole event suffer for all.

Scarlet is important, I get that, but now she’s just a cipher like Teq and others who can’t keep our collective attention because other players won’t go any longer.

When is the Scarlet story going to be ‘told’ so we can get on with bigger groups of people who can do these world-jumping-all-over-the-map events?

Need help on WvW roaming build

I like roaming in WvW too. Roaming thieves (and any other roamers) seem to see me (ranger) as easy pickins…I’m not the best 1v1 person out there, but I’m not the worst either…but I get owned on almost every encounter with a thief. It’s a win for me if I get him to disengage—but most of the time I end up dead.

Hell, even in groups thieves seem to focus on my ranger (easy pickins again?)

Any other rangers having that much difficulty versus thieves?

Yes, after over a year of playing a Ranger I am finally about two months into WvW for the first time (so I have two months experience IN WvW).

I’ve tried several builds, I’ve tried every combination that I can think of and I still get zeroe’d in on by thieves who know I can not counter them.

Find me one single Ranger who can down a decent Thief – I will follow the build and rotation religiously – since I die far more than most and I don’t die as much on any other character, I know it can’t be just my skill since one does die and the other does not in the same situation.

No, you are not alone.

I find it incredible that Anet doesn’t have a manual or at least explain WvW in full.

The wikis are so incomplete on WvW as to be very convoluted or downright useless to the player who is serious about trying to stay alive when others seem to be superbuffed and you’re trying to figure out how and where to just survive a 1v1.

Rangers should be able to fight any other player – and I could until the last mini-patch – then my “build” somehow melted and I am back to not being “useful” at all and am one or two shotted to the ground by almost every player in every profession.

I like traveller for wvw, free mobility means a lot. With sword/GS you can keep up with swiftness when you’re not gaining it from someone else.

I don’t have armor with a full set of traveler runes, so I can’t say for sure if this is or isn’t an issue. But assuming the 25% speed boost doesn’t affect the pet, you’re giving up about 50%-70% of the pet’s DPS against a moving target vs Signet of the Hunt. That’s the difference I’ve been getting timing pet kill times against the running golem with/without SoH. Anywhere from roughly 2x to 3.5x as long to kill.

I have a dozen traveler runes banked, but have been hesitant to put them on my ranger for this reason.

Using them isn’t a bar to getting them back – if you don’t have the gold to break down exotics then wait a bit and then try.

I’d like to know the differences between what you are using and Traveler and you seem to be farther along in cash than many

I think it mainly depends on your goal, but say it was busting big blobs, what would be a good ratio of classes to run to both stay alive and do a lot of damage. I usually run about 5-6 warriors, 4-5 guardians, 1-2 eles, 2 engineers, 1 necro, 2-3 mesmers and one ranger/thief.

Another thing Anet is NOT getting is that the WvW kills are by how many kill points you hit a particular NPC whether it be the sentry or the Lord of the Keep – the warrior will ALWAYS “beat” the rest of those hitting the NPC by points – my points can’t match them and THERE is the inequity of WvW in a nutshell.

A group of Rangers can’t be stopped – problem is, we don’t group together and use our skills effectively in a zerg or havoc group.

Many will run from a group of three or more Rangers – problem is most commanders don’t use us well.

One thing. Check your commanders the next time you are in WvW… more and more of THEM are Rangers.

Too Toxic for begginers?

The toxic events are group events, they should be done with at least one friend, preferably get a group of 5 and it should be manageable. Even with a fully geared 80 you have to be careful and not agro more than one vet at a time because they hit quite hard. I don’t blame you for having trouble soloing it. The giant map marker doesn’t help the situation.

The vast majority of players don’t have anyone else to play with. Guildies don’t want to go to ‘Starting’ areas and most who are in those areas aren’t used to doing group events yet.

There are many reasons why toxic events should not be near very new players – cash being yet another reason – rezzing without money can’t be done – I’ve been there.

as the title says i have had a crazy amount of random lag and dc’s but only today which is strange. dont think i can add anything else but i know for a fact its not my end

Lag and skill lag has been insane.

If you have 30-50 or more on any screen there is no way to move.

I have three bugs going on right now.

One is a missing Consortium Sickle that I bought with real money – I followed the instructions to make it account wide and WHILE I was using it on the second character who was to use it, it just disappeared. I’ve put in a ticket and posted on the forums to no avail for days.

The second bug is my character disappearing – me, no me, just a transluscent outline of sorts that people can “see” but not see – no features just a blurred screen where my character should be.

Third bug I have submitted in game only – because I am tired of no answers at all. At times I can roll and roll and roll forever. Even when I am fighting a foe. Not the way I want to win a fight.

Why isn’t support helping after beating us to death about posting in the forums and putting in game tickets?

My Sickle Disappeared

I followed the instructions to be able to use my sickle on any character. A few days later after I had been using it for a while, my “forever” sickle just disappeared.

I put in a ticket but haven’t heard a word so far.

Ft Aspenwood - IOJ/DB major skill lag

We lost SMC.

Maybe we would have but we will never know because everyone there was reporting at least 10 second skill lags.

Some couldn’t get a single skill to pop at all – so we wiped completely when we might have been able to hold out with arrow carts and hunkering down together.

There were about 100 players in the Lord’s room at SMC – it was the most lag I’ve EVER seen in the game – skill lag worse than I’ve ever seen it before.

…And this is being “scored” how? The overwhelming force with the least lag wins?

Why turn servers into virtual guilds?

Anet did not create the disparity, they just allowed people to transfer to other servers. Eventually all serious WvW players migrate to those servers seen as “serious” about WvW.

Why should anyone serious about WvW have to play with people who do not share that mindset?

It creates enormous population imbalances. But it is driven by player choice, and Anet giving the players the freedom to transfer.

There isn’t a particularly good solution to the problem, unless you want to ban server transfers entirely.

Not ban transfers – but make it clear that BEFORE a season starts, you get ONE server change – this ridiculous PUG nature of WvW isn’t doing a thing for longevity of the WvW as a viable “competition”.

There is a way to stop the insane transfers – Anet just needs to see it as a problem and then fix it – and I know they can.

What the HECK is a “spike” anyway?

Even when I am buffed to the max I can get nothing or spikes – MF and effort rewarding isn’t working as intended – otherwise “spikes” wouldn’t keep filling my bags in WvW.

Winning in WvW “seasons” would be nice – but unless the servers are locked after the season starts who REALLY knows which “server” is best and who just keep jumping ship to get there…

I’ll stop you right there, because people don’t hate Scarlet because she’s a villain. She’s an obnoxious piece of kitten who doesn’t fit into the GW world, she breaks lore like there’s no tomorrow, she has the most annoying voice I have ever heard in a game (yet she’s supposed to be very persuasive; “silver-tongued” even), she constantly pulls new “evil alliances” that make no sense out of her kitten , she incessantly escapes every attempt to apprehend her (hell, in this update she WALKED RIGHT PAST MY CHARACTER. She just left. Right past a charr with a flamethrower after a five-minute monologue).

So don’t say hating her means she’s a good villain. I don’t hate her because of what she does, because I’m not sure what she does or how she does it. I hate her for what she is and what she represents: ANet’s incapability of writing a good kittening story.

I hope one of ANet’s writers reads this. Hell, I hope Bobby reads it.
You wrote a bad story, Bobby. It feels like you looked to David Cage for storytelling and Matt Ward for character creation.

I don’t think Scarlet is a bad villain.

Well if they nerf the only WvW viable build, I have no idea. It took me forever to get to Spirits and now they want to take away the only way some stay alive against huge odds…

For the ranger, we’ve adjusted the placement of some traits so that rangers should have more build combinations. For example, by swapping Nature’s Vengeance and Spirits Unbound so that rangers can have spirits follow you in tier 2, players can now opt out of the higher damage output from spirits and still have options elsewhere. We also brought up some Marksmanship and a Skirmishing trait to make power specs more appealing. We feel like rangers also currently have too much endurance regeneration through traits. Due to this, we’ve made adjustments to Wilderness Survival traits, and we’ve also brought down the passive of Sun Spirit and the active effect for Storm Spirit.

Long Range Shot. Increased the damage at 500 range by 20%.
Long Range Shot. Increased the damage at 500-1000 range by 15%.
Marksmanship V – Predator’s Instinct. Increased the threshold from 25% to 50%. Increased the Cripple Duration from 2s to 10s. Increased the cooldown from 15s to 30s.
Marksmanship VI – Beastmaster’s Bond. Decreased the cooldown from 90s to 60s.
Skirmishing XII – Moment of Clarity. Stun Duration increased from 50% to 100%.
Wilderness 5 Natural Vigor. Reduced the increased endurance regeneration from 50% to 25%.
Wilderness VIII – Oakheart Salve. Decreased the recharge of this trait from 20s->15s
Wilderness XII – Bark Skin Increased the damage reduction from 30% to 50%.
Nature Magic I – Circle of Life. Cleared up the text of this trait to clearly identify that it happens when downed, not defeated.
Nature Magic V – Strength of Spirit. Increased conversion from 5% to 7%
Nature Magic IX – Two Handed Training. Added the following functionality to this trait. Greatsword and Spear attacks have a chance to grant Fury on hit. 50% chance. 3s Fury. 10s cooldown.

Anet is there any way we, as Rangers, can make for ourselves, a compound bow that goes 2500?

A Ranger’s pets haven’t been given the power they have in the wild – ok, so we’ve been the step-children and not wanted in any group in any area of the game – again, ok, but can we have a way to stay alive since we are the designated loners?

I love my Ranger – I wouldn’t play any other character for very long – the mechanics just felt familiar even from the beginning.

Yes, I use my longbow – but I also use deadly double axes – and I am finally able with ascended trinkets (most) to do 2700 damage, certainly not a lot but better than I’ve had in many moons.

I love the game Anet, but the strengths of the Ranger as they would be in real life and certainly in fantasy needs a unique weapon for our singular skills as outdoorsmen and protectors of the wild.

Not all creatures have become spore corrupted; there is a small chance that they will have the corruption, but just as likely they will not. Look for a Toxic Corruption condition or debuff on veterans and Champions to help increment the achievement.

I still have no idea how to figure out where to find these – I am still at 13/25 after days of this event. Sorry, the clarification didn’t clear anything up for me, I am far more confused about this achievement and many others.

My dyes have changed?

I would also pay real money just to revert this for my Sylvari. I can’t find a single dye that even resembles what I used to have going. I can’t believe that someone would actually get rid of the good existing textures to change it to this washed out textureless mess. With no warning towards players at all. It is a significant change.

Pictures (Before & After patch). Been using Grass and Fern dye. I can’t even get a similar “glow” on the armor without changing the armor to some super bright color since my sylvari glows a bright green.

I understand people wanted Glow. I never really cared either way if the armor had glow or not. The thought never crossed my mind that the armor would have to be practically downgraded in design in order to achieve glow. So disappointed.

Edit: Just want to say since I am afraid I may have come off more harshly then I intended (I was quite disappointed by this) but I appreciate the effort that has gone into giving Sylvari armor more customization. And I think it would be great if it was offered as another armor set or alternative version. I just feel that after a year its about too long to greatly change an existing armor piece. It is actually a year this month that I have owned my tier 3 set so I am quite attached to its old style.

They have gone from 3D depth and textures to sooth the mind into thinking it is in a reality, to a flat, emotionless, and BLAND art style probably for the sake of lag – nothing more.

When anyone is expected to spend money to outfit and color a model – for that is what they are – one would expect that the “look” would be protected in a locked file – but ANET changes the textures without so much as thinking about what it does, in reality, to the mind’s ability to accept as “real” the characters that are still literally flat but so much flatter without the good texturing, depth, warmth and clarity.

The new colors aren’t even clear – as some have already said, they are really very muddy.

For some this game is a hobby and for others it’s a serious endeavor to keep our minds sharp when our bodies can do very little due to illness or injury.

Anet, go back to the beautiful, clear and bright art that brought you so much attention at the beginning of the game.

"New" rewards in WvW - Can't prove by me

From what I can see and the “reward” I received, it seems to me that two items from a chest for top achievement of the three servers, one being a cheap rare (20ish silver) and a green item whose only “worth” would be to salvage it – a single silver or less isn’t a “reward” for this kind of success.

Please correct me if I am wrong – but Ft. Aspenwood beat out the other two servers in the freshly past matchup just before the servers were changed – how are two items for hours of dedicated WvW participation “reward” any player?

Honestly, I can make more in rares, salvageables, and silver by just doing a world zerg on any of the maps that are doing them. I didn’t feel “rewarded” at all.

I love WvW but the “rewards” are a joke compared to PvE.

I hope that Anet understands the time that people are putting into WvW is worth it on principal but the rewards are the “end game” for many and that “end game” for WvW “seasons” is not being satisfied when compared to PvE dungeons and world events.

I thought pvp was bad off… I was wrong, at least one is “even” in PvP, many in WvW have been in there a year longer than those joining – what reason do they have to come back and spend the time necessary to win a WvW “season”?

I hope this isn’t seen as a complaint, I am not complaining. What I am trying to do is ask why the rewards are so completely different for WvW and huge participation but so good for a two hour dungeon or an hour of PvE running..?

Developer livestream: Ranger PvE guide

Will this include WvW with the PvE? It’s hard to keep track of things as one day WvW is PvP and the next it’s PvE!

But I’d have to say the most important issue for me with Rangers right now is how you could go in the WvW forum right now, ask people to rank the classes from most to least valuable, and every single person will rank the Ranger as last place. Why? Can/will anything ever be done about this?

The next big sticking point with Rangers is the Sword’s #1 attack with the leaps. This is a very difficult mechanic to use for new players which turns a lot of player’s off the weapon/class. The only way to use it is to turn off auto-attack which means the player is going to have a direct DPS loss on their highest DPS weapon!

Next up is pets… even with additional health (why no in WvW btw?), they are still more of a hindrance than an asset to the class. With poor pathing, their inability to hit moving targets, unresponsive F2 abilities, their inability to dodge, and the fact that the Ranger loses between 25-40% of its damage because it’s balanced under the presumption the class will have the pet up 100% of the time… which is impossible. Will pets be improved?

Next up is utility. The class offers some reasonable utility with Spotter (a tree that’s mostly there to help Ranged attacks, which are awful in PvE) and Storm Spirit (which requires a 30pt investment to actually be functional), and a waterfield (which recently had its duration reduced), but that’s about it? Does this utility offset the fact that the class does so much less DPS and the horrible pet mechanics?

The next thing I’d love to hear discussed is why the class is so passive in nature? We have other classes that are actually fun to play with engaging skills that need to be combo’d or timed perfectly that have amazing effects on the class and your group. The Ranger not so much… you kinda select something, hit f1, and auto attack. Why aren’t the weapons as engaging as other classes? The ranged weapons in particular!

That’s about all I’ve got for the PvE (slanted toward real PvE and less about WvW for now

I am all about WvW now mostly because the achievements are confusing and clutteringly done in a way that one can’t tell what to do “next”.

At least in WvW I know the objectives, I still get some experience and I can run with people that in the long run, can get to know me… Oh but wait, they don’t pay attention to Rangers in WvW… ugh.

Skirmish With a Longbow?

The Longbow/Greatsword Ranger

I made these videos per requests in another thread. The general consensus in the thread was that Longbow is only good for long range fighting and hugging the zerg and is not good for skirmishing. While I do believe short bow is great for skirmishing, I believe LB is a very capable skirmishing weapon and for some builds/play styles may even be superior.

The discussion was also that you have to give up too much survivability (WS and BM) in order to effectively use LB. I used two builds for these videos and neither produce any kind of mega dps or give up survivability. Both have 30 in WS. One has 25 in BM and focuses on healing/regen and the other has 20 in BM and focuses a little more on crit and life steal.

After defending LB as a good skirmishing weapon I was asked by multiple people to make a video demonstrating that it could effectively do it. So….I downloaded Bandicam and spent the last two nights roaming and looking for duels. LB/GS is a complimentary weapon set that I like for all aspects of the game (PVE, PVP & WvW). I’m not claiming to be the best duelist in the game or OP in any way as I’m sure there are much more talented players out there. I just want to show that LB can be used effectively in skirmishing situations. Really the video is just as much about GS as I find they compliment each other well and switch often.

I’m not discounting SB’s prowess as a skirmishing tool. It’s great for it. Just don’t dismiss LB as a power/crit/glass cannon/zerg hugging only weapon.

How to take action against bad people?

How am i as a generally kind, mature and serious player supposed to do anything about this? I do realize that this is rare. But this is seriously something that i would like to have resolved, and i think this is a worth a multiple report. For verbal abuse, trolling and in some sense, scamming.

I completely understand where you’re coming from. If I were you, I’d just report the guys for the worst abuses and then forgive and forget. Those kids are probably coming in from other games like Maple Story, where those kinds of actions are common. I should know: I play MapleStory from time-to-time.

Don’t let it get to you. Most likely these were under-age kids who think they can get away with being rude because Mommy and Daddy aren’t looking. It’s not worth letting these babies ruin the game for you. Report, Ban, and Forgive-and-Forget.

Oh, and remember: PUGing is like hitchhiking. You’ll never know who you’ll meet.

I have seen proven adults doing this same thing. One can’t get one’s guild to go into many dungeons together, PUGS are all that’s left…

Hi,

I rarely post on the forums, i’m much more of a reader. However, just minutes ago something happened to me that made me really frustrated.

I’ll keep it short.
I got into a CoE party and all went fine. Soon i got into some disagreement with another player about how to do the dungeon, i backed down because i had no intention in discussions and just went with his plan of action.

Soon this escalated when 3 of our party (myself included) wanted to skip the Champion troll, since that’s possible. The other two insisted we did this. I told them to go ahead but we we’re gonna skip it. They replied with “little kitten”.
After that, they intentionally lured the troll upon us and votekicked us out.

tl;dr

I’m kitten ed because i spend 25 minutes in a dungeon being called names and being provoked, and i end up getting kicked for staying polite and mature about the whole thing, even after being called names.

How am i as a generally kind, mature and serious player supposed to do anything about this? I do realize that this is rare. But this is seriously something that i would like to have resolved, and i think this is a worth a multiple report. For verbal abuse, trolling and in some sense, scamming.

I am griefed every time I say I am a Ranger – 99% will ask me if I ‘have another character’.

The sheer meanness of some people who want to control others is just getting awful.

Looking at Whiteside’s buying-time “Collaboration push” in the General forum…
…makes me believe they’re already on the Bargaining stage.

Especially when looking at Josh’s followup in it about what they consider to be useable feedback where it becomes clear that they only care about how opinions are worded rather than how factual they actually are. …. I know there’s hundreds of us here who get infracted every month on the slippery slope of “rude/cynical” posts that they (Anet) want to imply is just a bunch of Slander because they are out of touch with the facts. … they get all their facts from datamining which if you look at similar models in the USA with regards to public polling …. you instantly see just how useless that sort of data gathering really is. (Mathematical paradox: congress having a 10% approval rating … but a 90% incumbancy for instance).

This thread itself will likely see deletion on the grounds of “character attack” even though all we’re doing is trying to figure when we can start taking all of this seriously and actually do what they claim they want us to do…. (give nothing but positive-worded feedback). ….Before we can take it seriously, there has to be some trust. When they tell us our feedback will be ignored b/c they think any one part of it might be Slander, then the discussion is no longer about collaborating. It’s about keeping score and “It’s my way, or the highway”.

And they CAN do that…. It’s their forum. It’s their Servers. It’s their ball… But when all they have left is a bunch of yes-men… When they either turn away or outright ban their most passionate fans by constraining the discussion to a point where they never have to apologize for any of the mistakes THEY MADE… they quickly lose the brightest and most creative contributors the ever had. And the product’s overall potential takes a huge hit until it becomes so inbred that it stops attracting any new playerbase —- Just like City of Heroes before NcSoft pulled the plug on that game…

I made a similar post in the vein of this one on their Forums about 2 years before it shut down. (just as it was hitting its death spiral). And 4 years before that… I called Jack Emmert out on his shenanigans and misappropriation of resources right before he got pushed out of lead Dev … he replied to my post with so much denial and deflection it makes that Tagged up Dev who squatted on the GvG’ers look like miss congeniality. Granted I may be a ADHD scrub in Arena, terrible at minmaxxing in general, and even mathematically dyslexic at times. But as far as prognosticating trouble ahead goes, my track record is pretty good…

…I don’t foresee Anet going down that road in the next 5 years b/c for right now, there isn’t that level of Hubris. Mike OBrien still holds the reins on this horse (I hope!). This isn’t even a nose dive yet. It’s a snag at best…. And all they have to do is just get over it. Do things that actually rebuild respect from us long-timers who’ve been with them since April 2005. Focus on bug fixes and skill splits like they used to do in good old Gw1. … don’t write off everyone with negative comments as a LOST CAUSE. Stop building Carnival Attractions and start building Trust.

I second your posting.

We shall see if they care in the next two patches or so. Sad to have to wait after waiting over a year.

I have not been playing WvW for long even though I’ve played the game since BWE1
but……

This crap that is going on right now is annoying as hell and something needs to be done about it by the dev’s.

what I’m talking about is the follwing:

With bloodlust, every stomp grants 1 world point per stack of bloodlust, the problem right now is people are using alt+f4 to quit the game in the middle of the stomp and in so doing negate the stomp and deny / rob you of your points !

There is such a simple solution to this, I cannot for the love of me figure out how the dev’s missed it.

add a logout timer to WvW only, say 30 seconds timer from the moment you press logout, alt+f4 or quit the game by any other means while in WvW

this would ensure that if you lost the fight and you’re getting stomped even if you quit the game I get my points because your toon is still there for me to stomp for the next 30 seconds

why 30 seconds and not 15 you say ?
simple, some people will go to any length to try and circumvent the systems in place, some will start the logout process before going down in a fight they know they will lose, if this is done and it’s only 15 seconds by the time he goes down the timer will be at 2 seconds a standard stomp takes 3 seconds, you see my point ? this logout preloading would be a lot harder to do if the timer is 30 seconds.

I finally start getting people downed and they alt-f4 – they don’t like losing – they don’t want a fair fight.

I would love a fair fight in WvW without the rage quitting…
