Bring back: ‘Gamer’ title + MAT’s!
Throw out: Hotjoin!

In that article apparently.
And how did we screw over Wvw resource-wise? We have gotten nearly nothing or kitten stuff.
Apparently a gvg taskforce has been set into motion to. If they implement the WvW version of 20v20 and screw over the pvp population….
Well, task force has gotten the task to implement Gvg. They’re gonna lose their entire Pvp population if they don’t implement it right.
May I ask what you guys understand when asking about implementing Gvg?
Today’s twitch chat at anniversary bash showed a big demand of Gvg. Now I’ve played GW1 gvg for 6 years and I keep wondering how you guys see Gvg. I’m getting the impression it’s a 15v15 to 30v30 deathmatch.
Do you want a competitive Gvg infrastructure? With it’s own maps, rankings, outside of Wvw?
Or do you want it more casually? Still in Wvw, but more closed off of the actual WvW?
If it’s the latter, I don’t really see a problem with it.
If it’s the first, then you’re asking for the wrong things. This is only popular because it happens in the WvW scene where there are big guilds. Once you pull it outside and make it competitive, it’ll be much harder to get those numbers together every other night and it would become a very niche format (which it is now too). I’m afraid not much people realise this and when Anet decides to listen to the crowd they might make a mistake.
Would adding other gamemodes to the Pvp-side help alleviate this issue? Would adding more of an old-skool Gvg (a la GW1) maptype be good for you? I assume not, because it would still be 5v5.
But remember this. Gvg in GW1 was complex (what made it pretty fun actually) and required 8 people. Moving from GW1 to GW2 they decided they needed a more accesible pvp format and thus made it conquest based (which is easy to understand, but has a lot of depth) and lowered the people req. to 5. These were all good choices imo (Conquest mode debateble, but we know new maptypes are coming). The problem now with Pvp is the complete infrastructure around it and the meta/balancing/skill-reward issues.
Anyway, GW2 is built around conquest based pvp. And besides a plain deathmatch is not a good gamemode. Lots of games show this (even shooters have secondary objectives), because deathmatch is pretty boring and encourages the wrong things.
So please, before asking for a Gvg infrastructure, think about what you really want and what really is feasible.
So many people asking for Gvg. But they see Gvg as what happens in WvW now. 20v20 or 30v30 deathmatch. That’s bound to be a fail when they would actually implement a structure to support it, unless they keep it casually in WvW.
Because it gives a sense of progression.
We had this QQ back in november. Since then we knew this was coming. We’re getting one tier which is ascended. If they announce another higher tier then you can QQ all you want.
First Legendary, now ascended.
First Jewels, now weapons, later gear.
Like a new tier. You see the point? So many guys are against this, and ANet do nothing for that! Why do you ignore us, Arena Net?
K, you rather have them add in one go then? Sjeez, you get my point (I hope). After the armor it should be done, if not then we can all complain. They add it slowly, because they don’t want to overwelm people.
Yes i get. But now my point: I must !grind! It for three classes, for different builds. But i have no time to do this. Because when I want to play, I want to play. Not ‘work’ to have no disadvantage. And arena net tout wiht this. And it was a lie what they said. And that makes me, and many others angry. You have now an disadvantage without it.
Well, if it’s achievable through playing your beloved content wouldn’t that be fine then? I assume you play WvW mainly, ‘cus only there you could be at a slight disadvantage. So if they make it accesible through playing WvW, then I don’t see the problem.
They should show some balls and drop hotjoin and only allow custom arena’s for player run tournaments. Hotjoin messed so much up.
If the only option was soloq and teamq, we’d have more people in there. This way (when the matchmaking gets fixed) the teams are more evenly balanced, lower queue times and people actually L2P. Just add an unranked queue when you decide to make rank mean something.
Edit: If they’d drop hotjoin, it would give me hope again for a competitive GW2. But I guess it’s never gonna happen, ‘cus they see money from those CA’s I guess.
^ Seriously, one exotic drop? You never found one in bags, chests, etc? You got some bad luck then, I only do Living Story when I pve and I’ve gotten a few out of that.

No, but expect it to be low.

Rather than another gamemode, I want a competitive infrastructure like gw1 had and other pvp titles have these days.
This was supposed to be ingame before release. Would you be QQ’ing then? No, it would be part of the game. A gear treadmill repeats itself over and over, Anet said time and time before that this is the only high-end tier there will be.
And gw1 wasn’t a grind? lol it’s all optional, you’ll be able to play the game at any level without ascended gear.
I do every pve with a mixture of rare/exotics, I don’t even look at the stats except for condi damage. I manage to play everything. Seriously, what’s the fuss? You can’t play your alt, why?
Pay with gems (from gold)?
Edit: Or use the guesting feature.
This is not in order of importance, but here goes:
1. Soloq matchmaking fixed. Use the system as is but add one last step: Taking the 10 people and make two random teams based on that pool of 10 people.
2. Leaderboards polished. Add a proper decay and make the team leaderboard… a TEAM leaderboard.
3. A good reward overhaul. We know it’s coming, but as you refuse to say anything about it… I hope it’ll be good.
4. AUTOMATED TOURNAMENTS. Daily, weekly, monthly, yearly with tangible rewards (cfr. point 3). This is needed for so many reasons, I can’t understand why you tought in the transition from gw1 pvp to gw2 pvp to not add this. It’s needed for natural team creation and creates a dynamic/consistent competitive feel.
5. I’d rather have hotjoins removed just to educate people to the fun part that Tpvp can be. But this will never happen. Workaround: Make Tpvp much more rewarding then Hotjoins (again cfr. 3.). Rewards should go from low (hotjoin), medium (soloq), high (teamqueue), highest (Automated tournaments).
6. Observer mode. I know you want to go esports and boost twitch viewership but that isn’t really working now. Give us observer mode and tie it win the matches played in daily/weekly/monthly tournaments. This way everyone who plays gw2 can enjoy them and maybe even be tempted to play?! Again…why hasn’t this been transitioned from gw1pvp?
7. Replay mode. Make it possible to save and replay matches. Add this functionality to observer mode matches (thus the daily, weeklies, etc.) and to custom arena’s who are used for player-run tournaments.
8. Risk/reward and skill ceiling balancing/retuning. Risk/reward is skewed with many builds. A low skill floor is fine and actually good for new players but the reward shouldn’t be that high. Skill ceiling should be way higher on every class. Revamp traits/sigils/cast/animations and the like to leave room for reactionary gameplay. Implement more fun skills who allow different but fun (thus not perma stunlock, chain fears, etc) gameplay. Find a solution for condi meta (DR on condis?, etc) so that condi/burst/balanced is all viable.
9. Build templates. Again a feature from gw1 that wasn’t necessary for you? :/
Anyway, we know it’s coming (kinda).
10. New gametypes (more crazy conquest maps is fine for me).
Conclusion:
- These are the ten out of the top of my head. So there’s clearly a lot stuff missing (imo).
- This more QQ but can’t help it: So much features we had didn’t make gw2. I mean, you clearly wanted this to be an esport long before launch (GW1 was competitive so why not the sequel?, pre-launch hype, etc.). It’s really sad to see that pvp got the shaft and that you lured so many people in with hyperbole.
I heard the whole original team who made gw1 left, Robert left so who is still with anet that has passion for gw as whole? Time will only tell i guess but its not looking pretty (especially endgame content)
You are aware that he wasn’t an “original team who made GW1”, right? His linkedin page puts him at A.Net for just over 2.5years from 2011. He was a hire on most likely only for Guild Wars 2.
Owned.
My question: Can you give us a clear blogpost about what to expect on the competitive side of gw2 (feature-wise)? Emphasis on ‘clear’.
So what I’d not like to hear: “Yes, we wanna do this and that. Yes, we’re talking about this and that. Yes, we would like to do something like that in the future.” A clear answer, please.
I was especially bummed by the PvP blogpost. WvW got a ‘whats coming’-blogpost a few months ago, the same with Pve with only a very small part about pvp. The Pvp blogpost we then got a month or 2 ago, was just a rehashed version of the patchnotes of that time.
Who said it won’t be available? “Hardmode is coming out for world 2 AND world 1.”
Very nice montage! Need more of those.
^ They should give you a title. I cba to make dyes though I rly want it. :p
Am I the only one who likes the new minimap? :/
Lots of people leaving and teams reorganising it seems lately.
Sad to see, but can’t blame anyone. For me a game is already fun when it has all the features it needs for competitive play. I don’t really like Moba gameplay but it (a few games) has such nice features all around, it makes it just that more fun. Heck, even Blizzard’s new cardgame looks fun because of the reward/competitive structure.
and then the QQ cycle will repeat itself. Amen!
I like the new minimap. Need to get used to it, thats all.
they already did a great attempt at spreading the events in the entire zone.
Lag carried me for three games <3.
Slightly off-topic: Can’t they just make all the passiveness on traits and even sigils active? It would work the same way LoL does it on their ‘items actives’. So let’s say you get some extra ‘skill slots’ for the traits and make them animated. This way you can activate it yourself and the opponent is able to react to it.
A small 1 to 5 extra skill bar on top of your regular skill bar would do the trick. This way you can keep track of the internal cooldown and use it whenever.
Hmm C L I K got beaten to it. :p
I’ve watched a few times. Really like the idea! It’s fun to see some new faces and I’ve seen very helpful players stream.
Been wanting that since release. It has been asked once on a SOTG. Dev response was that they were gauging the community run tournaments. A bit later the community tournaments started to drop (invitationals, the weekly NA tourny, etc.). A few weeks later they announced the GW2 “offcial” tournament as a reaction to that. With the rushed organisation as the result (admitted by Allie).
This game doesn’t need other game modes to start with. This game needs more features built around the tournaments/conquest. We need those automated tournaments as they would incentivize making teams and create more dynamics. Ofcourse this is all tied in with the reward overhaul. I hope Anet does this overhaul right, because it is the most important thing right now.
Or give us on update on that 3 million figure. We want to know where we at.
Let’s hope the matchmaking fix will be in by then. But probably won’t.
We need that skill ceiling higher! I wonder if Anet is ever gonna try and adress this. To be fair, it requires a big overhaul and I don’t know if they have the resources/balls to do it.
If they leave it up much longer they’ll get flamed by the community. However, there’s still a slight possibility that this is an official hint.
From an individual standpoint it’s kinda easy. You cap points and try to kill. Your build will always do dmg and you’ll always be able to heal yourself.
From a team standpoint there’s more depth, agreed. But dumbing the entire game down to team deathmatch wouldn’t work. Most games have extra objectives.
In gw1 both the individual and team skill floor were pretty high. Though that game still managed to get a pretty decent sized community.
butch people like you are the reason the human race is doomed.
Alrighty, define syncing for me please.
I’ve been with my guildie in a few matches. It was always a surprise to see him.
So that’s syncing? Because we wear the same guildtag though.
I’ve been with the same people over and over, match after match. Never intentional, but that’s syncing too then?
It’s the system and it’s ridiculously easy to exploit. But goodluck seperating the ‘real’ syncers from the ‘accidental’ syncers.
It’s because of hotjoin and no proper tutorial for pvp.
^It shouldn’t be considered an exploit because it’s the systems’s fault. Even without any intention you can get guildies in your team. The only advantage that syncing offers is if VoIP is used, which you can’t check.
If those syncers didn’t use VoiP, than in ideal situation the MM would have made 2 equal rated teams.
Anet should make an ‘enjoyable’ meta and after that focus on overhauling some core issues.
All, or atleast a lot of the passiveness/RNG/instant stuff has to go. They need to make it active, animated, etc. so that the skill ceiling can rise.
This should happen together with an overhaul of how aoe works. This will benefit both pvp and wvw. I hower have no clue how to actually fix those aoe issues. Because you don’t want to nerf aoe to death you want to make it balanced.
So… If you see you’re 5 thieves in the group you shouldn’t be allowed to swap characters nor swap your build? So it’s basicly a gg for the opposing team unless they have 5 thiefs too.
Anyway, I was talking about the game in its current state. Either you adapt, or lose.
^ As it should. If you want to win you have to adapt to the map you’re playing and the team comp you get.
Well, it looks like a balanced matchup actually.
I want to know what they had in mind when they talked about ‘fixing’ aoe. I guess, we’ll never know.
Work-around (like Super said): Add everyone above your rating to your friendslist. Add everyone around your rating to you friendlist. Stalk the ones around your rating and queue when they queue. Avoid everyone above your rating, as in queue when they’re in a game. Friendlist wars 2
Well it is early and the population overall is already low. So I think not even 10 people queued up at that point. Sad, but the truth.
