Bring back: ‘Gamer’ title + MAT’s!
Throw out: Hotjoin!
The fact is we can’t do anything about it. It is what it is. The features were not in at launch and now we’re waiting for them. They’re coming and they’ll be implemented the coming months. They do not want to give a timeline because that can create a backlash when they need to push things.
I wish we could make them go faster but I do think they’re doing the best they can. It still is a company with budget and time restrictions. It also has a pve and a Wvw section so not all 300 people are working on pvp and they shouldn’t.
As for the tournament prize thing. Gw1 had big prize pools so expect them to be even bigger in gw2. But do you want them to give a figure now? If they do that they’ll pull in many people and many of those will be dissapointed. You can make the comparison with the lack of features and the esport boasting before launch.
Give constructive criticsm, give ideas, evaluate the features they’re implementing and wait.
Custom arenas will give the community a starting base to get some prized tournaments going. This will provide another pool of info on how this would work as an esport.
I do think Anet is doing everything they can to push their ‘esport’ side. We just can’t see it. They made one mistake and that was boasting the ‘esport’ part and thinking the playerbase would be happy with the basic infrastructure for the first 6months.
Wait for the features. Evaluate/change the things that need to be changed. Get the pvp side alive with advertising, pull casuals in. Then drop Esport-Tournament-100.000 dollars in one sentence and don’t mess it up. Then we’ll be set for a nice future.
Anyway, that’s my opinion. :p
Yes you’ll can. They said you can do anything but wvw on another server.
They do know that they have to build ‘esports’ on TOP of the basic game. And make it casual-friendly. Colin said that in one recent interview.
And I’m hoping integrated leaderboards. They keep talking about leaderboards on the website which is needed too but I do want to have it in the game also. Or is this just me?
I don’t mind the titles being a real grind. I just think the glory gain should be more fair. Bunkers should get more rewards, you should get points for capping even though you’re not staying on the point (roamers), etc. They should reward the gameplay that is needed to win.
And they should reduce the glory gain in hotjoin or buff it in tpvp. That way more people might do tpvp.
^ Just refuse to do hotjoin. :p
I started pugging free tournies/solo queueing since r8 without knowing anyone on the server. It takes time but it works. I just did it this way because I don’t wanna force myself into doing hotjoin just to get r30. This way you learn nothing about tpvp as it’s entirely different than hotjoin.
You should know that this worked relatively easy for me as I’m on desolation. There’s a big chunk of pvp players there so you’re bound to get lucky and get in a group. :p
Anyway, being communicative in solo queue/hotm works wonders aswell for getting to know some players.
But I agree, the game is suffering from the same problem as in gw1. Let’s hope the MMR changes this.
Well ye matchmaking will help a ‘lil to even the matches but it won’t even the team comps.
Ye, you see the team but you don’t know if they’re actually good. I’ve seen many guildteams and we won against them in solo-queue.
He wants to know where his team is on the ‘skill-ladder’.
Don’t expect any other game modes soon. They will (I like to believe) add in others down the road but they’re focussing on getting the basic features in the game. And these features are about progression/newb friendliness (MMR) and esport accomodations. These will all be based on the conquest game type.
Dueling will be added later probably. As of now you’ll have to wait for Custom arenas and do it there (which isn’t the best solution but it’s still a temporary solution).
About the teamwork part. You’re right. That’s why I don’t like to solo queue anymore. If I come on my necro I won’t mean much unless my team is pretty decent. Why? My necro is nor bunker nor pure burst. If I solo queue I do it on my thief ‘cus I feel like I can mean more for my team and ’turn the tide’.
Overall I’d like to see more pvp progression (which is coming) and the matchmaking (which is coming too). Let’s hope for a good implementation of those.
What I would like to see is the possibility to solo queue and get a hold of the roster composition if you want too. I.e. I solo queu, but while doing that I get the possibility to set a class comp for the roster or to join an existing roster.
This should only be class based, so it shouldn’t show ranks or anything else. If you get a decent class comp to begin with you’ll be more motivated to actually try to win.
This wouldn’t stalemate the meta as the meta isn’t formed by solo queues, it’s made by the teams.
Let’s hope for some custom servers made by the community that essentially draws in the newbies, like you have in other games. Won’t solve everything as you have people joining who enjoy owning newbs.
Are those players new to the game or new to spvp? That makes a difference already imo. If you have no feeling at all with the game it’ll be a very hard/annoying road to getting better. While in pve you can gradually learn the basic elements of the game.
Second, you’ll have to help your friends counter those builds/classes. They can learn from playing or they can learn from you. They’ll have to learn how to handle the stealth because it will stay as a thief’s mechanic (The insta-gibbing might be nerfed ofc.).
In the long run getting a feel of every class is always good. You’ll get to learn the different builds/combos and animations and you’ll be able to react to them easier on your main.
^Play more and you’ll get to know the teams/players. This only viable atm ‘cus the community is rather small. In the end we’ll get our leaderboards and such (I hope).
But by playing them you should feel if you were outplayed or it was rather ‘your own’ fault. I sometimes lose and feel that we just played wrong or things didn’t go as planned. Other times I lose and it’s just because the other team was stronger.
But ye, would be cool if every team could see where it’s standing skill-wise. Even QP’s don’t really show that.
^Well, then conquest is the wrong mode for people like you. Because as it stands now it requires teamwork and focusses less on killing. To win in conquest you depend on your other teammembers.
Well… Conquest/gw2 pvp is pretty voice chat intensive. The teams performance will greatly improve if everyone’s communicating on ts.
Anyway, you can just ask the point defenders to report incoming people. But thats about it as it’s pretty hard to fight/keep track of things and type the stuff.
So if you’re looking to do serious tpvp games then yes voice chat is needed. But that’s in every team game.
Lol is different as you just hold your lane and it’s a bit less fast-paced. Anyway, if you wanna do LoL serious, you’ll be on voichat too.
So you can’t find a team ‘cus you don’t wanna voice chat plus you don’t wanna search for pugs because those are randoms?
Many groups are being formed without voice chat being req, so dunno whats the problem. And mostly those teams will be class balanced as it’s premade.
Solo queue on the other hand isn’t ideal ‘cus you’ll meet higher skilled teams and get an unbalanced team comp.
About solo queue: They should make it possible to queue and be ‘team leader’ and set a req on classes for the team. No ranks, no other requirements but a class/role. That would make it atleast a bit more balanced.
I hope the rating system won’t punish the other players even more ’cus of this and scaring most people to do solo queue.
Well we’ve beaten that setup with 2 rangers, ele, necro and guardian yesterday. Was a close match and they were a premade consisting of high ranks but still we won.
It’s a pretty solid team comp but you can outplay them.
^Desolation is the place to be on EU.
1. Why are custom arenas a bad thing for you?
private servers = less people populating real servers
But private servers are the same as custom ones only are they player run. Unless there’s some options changed, but they’ll be the same. They won’t be all password locked I think.
Press /rank next time your in HOTM.
I understand the reason for changing the rotation.
But kyhlo is the most fun/complex map imo. It deserves to be the last map.
i’d say a good spectator mode is all we need.
Would we be awesome if we could hear parts of the voicechat (never gonna happen but still :p). If I hear the teams communicating, as in the streams, things get much more exciting and fun to watch. ^So a good commentator would be a start.
I’d say stick to the gamemode, let custom arenas give some ‘shake things up’ settings. Prepare the people in hotjoin for casual tpvp (which is not happening atm).
Pull people in?
Moar rewards:
Why not have mini’s in the chests? (I know I wanted that ghostly hero from HoH in gw1)
Gief us tonics!
More titles.
More visible stuff: let us inspect players pvp stats. Give us more stats. Well implemented leaderboards (ingame pls)
Make those chests a bit more fun to open. Now I just hope for a dye, most of the armor/weapons I’ll be salvaging ’cus of doubles.
Motivate people to do tpvp.
Lesser glory gain, lesser rewards through hotjoin etc. Tpvp exclusive titles, etc.
^I think he was being sarcastic.
^But what would it be in deathmatch?
Ooh lets go all to that point. Spam aoe or something cheesy. Oh look we survived. Anyone know what happened?
^Random arenas was a fun side element but nowhere near the real deal.
There should be goals, a plain deathmatch is boring/unbalanced.
They could always add it just as a fun pvp feature but they should add other stuff first.
1. Why are custom arenas a bad thing for you?
It gives a sence of community as you can always go to the same server.
We’ll get options, dunno which ones but anyway. Options=good.
Real tournaments will finally have a chance to get going.
You can practice with your pvp guild.
You can duel.
You can challenge another guild.
Big pve guilds who want to have their own server just for providing yet another service for their guild.
Etc…
Custom arenas are good! Imo if they get going, they should drop nearly all the 8vs8 servers provided by Anet.
2. Why is downed state bad for you?
It adds strategy to the game. Maybe there are some small issues here and there but overall it adds strategy.
Would be good to have some random tips pop up in the loading screen or somewhere else.
But even if people now those things, they tend to ignore it if they aren’t going for the win. Instead they’re going for the glory.
So Anet should make it so that the people are motivated to go for the win above the individual glory gain.
Another thing to make the difference between tpvp and spvp smaller is getting rid of the 8v8 servers or atleast make them the minority.
It learns the ‘wrong’ things to newer players. It also isn’t motivating to speak in /team when they’re zerging.
They’re working on it. It’s coming.
When?
We do not know.
Make the flag carrier get new abilities/stats as they take the flag. That fixes the imbalance in mobility/bunk.
Make it have two flags, each spawn if far point gets capped by the opposite team.
Killing flag carrier/returning flag gives points.
Scoring flag gives points.
Scoring flag should be done in middle point (need to have it capped).
Capping the home point (their far point) resets the flag. (Dunno ’bout this one, would be a little to tense).
Would be intresting to see what people come up with.
- Capping far point spawns a flag. (so one for each team)
- Flagrunner gets ‘flagabilities’
- Flag needs to be taken to midpoint.
- Capturing flag gives a decent amount of points.
- Defending your flag, as in killing flag carrier and returning the flag, gives points too.
Things would get pretty crazy.
^Conquest will be here to stay. ‘cus they want it newb friendly, spectator friendly, ’easy to understand, hard to master’,etc.
But I do think they can work on the secondary objectives or make some more ‘complex’ twists.
They could do a king of the hill at mid point, if that’s capped it opens up the two side points or something catchy like that.
They can incorporate a flag into the three-point stuff.
I don’t mind for the conquest mode, they should just shake up things a bit more.
I find Kyhlo the most ‘complex’ one to play, foefire most ‘boring/easy’ one.
Nope and they won’t either ’cus it adds strategy to the game (Imo).
Atleast you should have tried to say “we”. Wouldn’t be much better, but still…
I mean febr/march aren’t that far away. They can atleast spill some details, no?
Any plans for WvW, like specific? We know rewards are coming, but that is pretty vague.
Are you not afraid the 1v1 in pvp will drain the paid tournies even more? The player base for paid isn’t very big atm.
Didn’t say much actually. Like no details at all. But it was even worse for the WvW guys. He didn’t say anything ‘bout that, he said rewards three times and guesting one time. That’s it, lol.
^That’s true. They should give greater glory rewards in tpvp or smaller in spvp.
And let’s hope those ‘glory ranks’ won’t matter much when they implement rating. Then those rank will just be something for fun progression and a cool finisher/emote.
r15 in HA in gw1 took 6 years or so. And that was an account played full time.
^Next week we’ll have more news.
How do you know?
‘Cus Colin stated in other threads that we’ll have a blog post next week containing their plans for the next 6 months. I don’t think that only consists out of pve as they’ve always said there will be big chunks of pvp content coming febr/march.
^Next week we’ll have more news.
^They’re working on it.
I just hope the whole ranking/rating stuff won’t make me hesitant of going in solo.
I’m by no means a top player but I’ll give my advice anyway.
The usual set-ups you see: Guardian bunker- necro condi/bunker-Mesmer home point portal- thief or warrior with high burst – Ele/engi bunker far point.
For example in forest of nifhel: Necro goes upper keep, guardian goes straight keep and sticks on the point, Mesmer on homepoint and portal between keep and homepoint, high burst roams between points helping, far point harass by ele/engi.
So you can do two things: You focus on your home point/mid point. Or you go a little further and you harras far point.
Anyway, Teamspeak is allready a big benefit. Stick to your roles/points and report the movement on the field. In that case the roamer can come help or you can adjust positions very easily.
Do not panic! This will mess up your positions.
Bunker= Hard to kill
Roamer= High mobility, High dps
Check for some basic builds on the forums/ gw2builds.com
Now I explained it very simplistic, but you can work on this.
Just keep in mind, that you need to hold the point or keep it atleast neutral so the other team doesn’t get points. It’s something people tend to forget in the heat of the battle.
^respect getting r40 in hotjoin only. That’s rly impressive (no sarcams). I did one tourny at r8 and since then I can’t ever go back to hotjoin unless it’s for buildtesting.
It’s much easier to rank up in hot-join than in tournaments.
Easier yes, but…I would die of boredom I think.

^ Make those leaderboards ingame btw. I find it very annoying to use the forums for the WvW/QP one.
If you’re talking about random arenas yes. Gvg, team arenas and HA not.
^ In gw1 we needed 8. While the pvp scene wasn’t massive there and the 8 people req was a barrier it still wasn’t that bad as in gw2.
Define sensation…
Anyway, this thread could become gold. popcorn
I’m so curious about the pvp blogpost. I hope they surprise us (=good way).
