I remember this being one of the things Arenanet wanted to do… update the mechanics to the existing dungeons. They did one dungeon, AC, and then stopped.
Is this something that is planned for this year?
Im still at a loss as to how people are farming large amounts of money from these events.
I dont think champs drop particularly fantastic loot…karma, 5-10 silver, maybe an ori ore. Loot bags, but still. I just dont see how people are farming 10 gold per hour. Even the pavilion farming. I dont see it. I brought my MF toon, with close to 300% MF with buffs. I didnt see nearly the income as some people are boasting. Even if I sold everything I earned.
Maybe Im doing something wrong?
For the invasion it all depends on how many champs spawn which depends on group size as i understand it. I did one invasion last night. I used a MF booster only but hit probably 8 champs plus scarlett. With salvaging the rares and using TP for most other items (i dont craft), i came away with about 6 gold.
Since the start of the invasions i have increased my bank by over 50 gold. Ibdont even want anything that i could buy but i want the LS achievements.
Still. Im getting T5 mats from bags and stuff. Even if I tag lots of champs.
Yeah, and if you are unable to farm properly, like me apparently, you are kitten out of luck.
If there is somehting coming that costs an insane amount of gold…That only people who could farm 10 gold / hour can get. Byeeeeee
Im sitting in these events on my necro..wellmancer..TONS of AoE. With boosts and food, Im over 300% MF. In one event, I might be able to amass two or 3 gold at max. How are people getting nearly 10? In some cases more?
Arenanet seems to have placed major value on minis. When you complete all achievements in a LS, most of the time you get a mini. You get Minis from drops. You get minis from the gem store.
I could care less about mini. They do nothing to add value to your character. For the progression nuts out there, they do nothing to add progression. They dont make my character look any more ‘cooler’ or unique.
If they gave the 1 yr people a choice of a few skins that only 1 yr folks can get…thatd be a good start. Giving us some gems would be a good start.
I dont care about minis. Boost is OK. But..yah, after the huge amount of hype this game has had.. the ‘success’ it has had, the ‘oath breaking’ and fortitude of the playerbase to stick with the game after many feel it has abandoned core principles..after a year of crappy content updates..this really is a joke.
Free stuff is free stuff, but for one year of a major game like GW2, a game where the devs apparently “care” about the game…they rewarded us with nada.
Question: how are people making 10 gold / hour with the invasions? You can only do one invasion per hour. Are you selling everything you get? I mean…even champs typically drop junk anyways. Karma, 5-10 silver, maybe an orichalcum ore.
I just dont see how people are doing 30+ in 3 hours, 10 in 1 hour.
I haven’t done these, so a question to you: Is it one invasion per hour per account or per character?
The invasions themselves only spawn once per hour. They take between 30-40 minutes to complete.
Its gated by arenanet, once per hour. You can do them every hour if you want to.
Even Pavilion farming, I didnt see half of the profit some people are boasting.
Im still at a loss as to how people are farming large amounts of money from these events.

Hi,
Curious if anyone else thinks kites should be a collectable in the mini tab.
Underwater exploration has been one of the awsomest(if thats a word) things in the game! The detail of a sunken ship or a quaggen city.. awsome.
They could do a lot with this. Id love it.
Hi,
There havent been any mention of a new class. But by the end of 2013, as per CJ, he states that there will be new skills to be purchased via skill points. We do not know what these skills are, if they are class specific or universal for any class, or how much each skill will cost. No information yet. You can find it on the home page, somewhere in the blog. Probably a few pages back. He posted this a few weeks ago.
As far as content goes for the last few months: Living Story is pretty weak. The current one is probably the best so far, but it does have its flaws. It funnels everyone into one zone to farm. Farm farm farm. Thats all we are doing is farming for $$ and mats. The living stories themselves feel disjointed, poorly told(with the exception of the current one). We have no new dungeons and we do not have the promised dungeon revamp(the changes to boss mechanics we were told we would get… not sure there is even a dungeon team anymore). They did change the reward system for dungeons which removed the COF P1 farm, and made all paths a bit more viable.
Achievement points now mean something, but now people complete living stories for achievements (like me) so that at certain intervals I am rewarded. Eh, I wouldnt say I do it soley for AP. But the AP rewards are nice and always in the back of my mind.
Overall, in my opinion, take away these points:
-Living Story is weak and is not what people asked for…but it is getting better.
-We still do not have the dungeon mechanic revamp.
-There is hardly any real ‘threat’ to tyria (like zhaitan was), so killing these invasions with this LS is merely a farm.
-Achievement points are now worth something
-More dungeon paths are viable now, and dungeons are pretty rewarding to run
-Slowly, we are seeing more class builds and less pure zerkers
-Purchasable skills are coming
-We’ve had lots of RNG in the past few months, but they are moving away from it
-Lots of temp content, but they said they will put in more perma.
-Arenanet has created the “need” for you to complete everything in the LS because of the acheivement points and chests you get. Otherwise, one does feel behind.
Just my 2 cents
Kind of curious why people are supporting guides.
-The majority of this community complains the game is too easy
-The majority of this community complains that there isnt enough to do
So what do we do? Turn to a site like dulfy, have everything spelled out in crayon… and complete the achievements in a few days. There was no learning curve. No figuring things out. No difficulty. She tells you how to do liadri pretty early in the Crown Pavilion patch. Things like that, dumb down the game. Yes, Liadri is still hard, but it would have been more challenging without her guide.
So now that you have followed her guides, completed everything two or three times faster than normal without any self gratification of figuring it out for yourself, you sit there complaining that there isnt anything to do.
As a result, many people have done the same thing..burned through the newly released content and arenanet is forced to adopt a 2 week living story schedule because their statistics tell them that player activity drops after 2 weeks. I wonder if that is because we had guiding hands for each content release, instead of taking the time to do it ourselves.
Edit: Sorry for multiple posts I leave posts for a hours or a day, and come back…read and reply when I have an opinion
They are not released to fansites first. They give you a sneak peek on twitter and reddit. That’s how the information is available on dulfy.
Sorry, incorrect. Dulfy has step by step instructions on how to complete events sometimes day before, or day of. She has literally everything done and written out while the rest of us are just starting.
I agree. Ignorant people saying “don’t use it if you don’t like it.” Yeah that’s not the point. It’s nice to every once and a while have some mystery and need to figure things out as players.
This is just selfish. Fansites like Dulfy’s that provide walkthroughs don’t ruin “mystery” because the official site already provides information about upcoming patches way before Dulfy does.
Just out of curiosity, can you guys specify examples of particular infos you see on MAP CHAT that you didn’t want to read (spoiled the patch for you)?
Also, burning through content fast is not a problem if it’s enjoyable. You know, replayability and and all that.
1. There are no walkthroughs on arenanet’s website. There are walk throughs on dulfys, sometimes day before, sometimes day of. And she has nearly all of it done and complete on her website shortly after the patch is released. While it takes us hours, days or a week to do even with her guides, she has it all completely written out on her site, the day of the patch release..at the latest.
2. I dont have screenshots obviously, but more often than not people ask “Where do I find xyz”, “How do I do this”… all within an hour or two of patch release. And the only way some people are able to answer this is by reading these guides a head of time. Now, if those questions were asked 6 or 12 hours after patch release it is obviously feasable that people have completed it on their own. But right as a patch drops, people already know what to do and that, IMO, is wrong.
I’m typing on my iPad, so I’ll keep this very brief.
What I feel:
1. I can’t stand all the spoilers and walk-throughs on this, and other sites.
2. I don’t want to have to feel I need to use guilds/spoilers to complete content.
3. The official announcements spoil half the fun by outlining most of the details
4. There is no sense of spontaneity in the Living Story.Reality:
1. The time requirement for the Living Story can be high
2. I can’t afford to risk not using online guides because I can’t risk missing rewards/AP
3. Map chat is not spoiler free, but has no filter system for other important info
4. ANet is feature/gear focused, not fun focused. In the end, when you shotgun blast content, players will struggle with finding a balance between fun, and speed. Most players that have played the Living Story releases have learned that you can’t risk taking your time.
When dailies, dungeons, crafting, monthlies, personal story, legendaries, jumping puzzles, socializing, etc, all have to fight for time, many players simply don’t have a choice. They must maximize the little time they have, so they basically cut corners.
In the end, you don’t feel accomplished, or really had all that much fun, but you continue the grind.
I feel this way with things too, from time to time and this is the exact mentality/feeling that I thought arenanet wanted to avoid.
But we’ll also always have the “dont like it dont use it”, “you dont need to do the LS/achieves/new content..noone forcing you” type of responses. True, and no one forced anyone to do anything in WoW, Rift, LOTRO either. You just did it because it was there. Its no different here.
GW2 is trying to be a gem with its content, but its no unique snowflake. I love the game, but some things just irk me beyond measure.
I dont consider majority of focus on living story to be “making the core of world better:”. Living story, largely, sucks.
Folks, at lvl 70..wp travel anywhere costs 1.5 – 2.5 silver.. Its costing just over 1 or so right now.
Depending how much you farm invasions, waypointing 10-15 times an invasion…it can add up
And not everyone spends money in the gem store or ever plans on spending money in the gem store, so slashes on BL keys would have been not seen by these people. But everyone waypoints.
WoW! I saved two copper! Literally! Thanks for shafting a potential character and utterly melting down iron for another nail for the coffin. On a serious note, I haven’t noticed the changes one bit. You guys wasted your votes on a bad character.
Try 1-2 silver. K.
I would rather see the info released on this official site before a fan site.
This^^^^
This would be slightly better only because…why is that data on a fansite and not here to begin with if Arenanet is open to sharing it pre release? Which also goes along with posting official updates on reddit, twitter, or facebook rather than here(which I think they ARE getting better at). Besides the point.
Makes me question, why would arenanet want us to know exactly how to beat a bossfight before it is released? Do they think we get more of a sense of enjoyment knowing how to complete the encounter prior to even experiencing it? What is their logic?
So with the invasions, we are waypointing all over. Aren’t you glad Ellen won? Reduced WP costs?
I know I’ll catch flack for this, but I have thick skin. To be blunt, a lot of short sighted people in this thread. You’re missing the point. As a whole, as a genre, releasing info to fansites so people know exactly how to do content before it is released allows people to burn through it way quicker than arenanet can get the next bit of content out. That creates problems of its own. But it also just fosters grind, boredom, etc.
Sure turn off map chat(but like vayne said, there are things I do want to see in map chat..it isn’t semi-permeable either). Dont look at dulfy’s site..well I dont. Its a concern I have for this game specifically but for the MMO genre(since I love mmos).
During my tenure in WoW, when a new raid was released we rushed right in and wiped for two or three nights until we figured things out. But WE figured it out. And the sense of accomplishment was much, much greater. (At this point, please also spare me the “go back to WoW” bit. I hate the game, but I am using it to make a point). In GW2, we had Dulfy figure it out for us, and then we breeze right through it in game. And then you come to these forums and complain that the game is too easy.
Very shortsighted to sit there and say “dont look at the site and turn off mapchat..”
Take a few steps back and look at the big picture and see that things like this are push people away from what used to make MMOs great…
I dont know how fansites such as Dulfy come by such vast amounts of information a day or so before content release, but please stop providing fansites with information before the content is released.
If you stop funneling fansitesinformation, this might spark what we like to calll “wonder”….that feeling we got when we first logged into the game and didnt know what to expect. The experiences that ensued after the “wonder” are talked about for years.
But currently, we go to dulfy, and get a step by step guide to complete the content. And if you dont read the guide, people in map chat tell other folks how to complete parts of it anyways so it is difficult to avoid the information whether you want to follow that website or not.

Ive never been sadder. I already hate the majority of living story content. To hear a lead designer say that we wont get a real expansion and continue with the living story strategy…infuriates me. So now they are on their true development cycle with the LS, we’ll see to what peaks they take it in the next month or two. Because the previous several months have been abysmal and laughable with poor story telling, temporary content, rng, disjointed story, lack of a real threat to tyria, lack of things that we are asking for, lack of dungeon mechanic revamping, etc.
I was thinking about this topic earlier when I was participating in one of the invasions. People in map chat were saying things like “Well, looks like a glitch of never ending champions..the vent isnt ending. Farming them, good luck with the event”.. And then others were defending their reasons for farming and failing the event vs trying to work together to complete it. They were saying the you miss out on two rares, but you have the possibility of gaining so much more if you just let the event draw out as many mobs as possible with the scaling.
I dont know if Arenanet patched this sort of behavior, but this is a real problem if you think about it.
In traditional MMOs where the world content is comprised of traditional questing…quest hubs, question marks and exclamation points. Go here, kill x, and return for your reward. Theres not a lot that can be done to glitch this type of content. Yet, in guild wars 2, dynamic events scale with more people. The more mobs there are, the more loot drops. The more loot drops, the better chance at getting better things. So someone who plays this game for extrinsic reward (I created a thread a few days ago intrinsic reward vs extrinsic) will look at the event and say "Well, if I complete the event, I get maybe 2 silver, some XP and 378 karma. If I intentionally let it “fail” without the event necessarily end..just farm mobs, I can get a lot of loot bags, vendor trash, possibility of rare and exotic drops, etc."
The reaction by any developer would be to nerf that type of behavior. So they possibly scale back the number of champions that will spawn, which is what they might have done to the invasions already. In doing this, this might ruin the experience a bit for people who ARE trying to complete the event, but just cannot get it done. Less champs and less loot being spread around because of the individuals who will exploit never ending champions, never ending waves of mobs, etc.
So… when you compare traditional questing vs dynamic events… Kill X, and return vs “try to kill the boss mob while waves of adds spawn”…you can see the potential problems.
Ill agree, the graphic is hard to see and I do hate one shot mechanics. I am a firm believer that one shot mechanics are lazy design.
Dawut? Upgrade what..your Trading Post browser? Lol…
Must be a glitch or bug
Edit: Please continue to post back here. Very curious until I get home from work.
Hmm, Ive wondered the same.
Dungeon revamp could mean a lot of things and I do think the reward system is a part of that.
But rewards aside, these dungeons need boss-mechanic overhauls. Some are solid dungeons, like all three paths in CoE. But CoF P1 is crap. CoF P2 is OK, but mag still gets lost in pathing when hes trying to find magnacite or whatever. And other dungeons are just huge hitpoint pools, one shot mechanics, or add fests.
But Id agree, wheres the dungeon revamp?
Seems dead to me…………………………………….
I just mope around by myself when I do get the urge to log in for a minute. I cannot stand the particle effects of this game and not being able to turn them off. That screenie makes me rage a bit inside.
edit I post this, and get to thinking, I don’t even like this game anymore, I think I’m done lol =D
This actually made me LOL.
Im enjoying it again, oddly. Good game, just stupid decisions and straying from their core. Its sad. But walking the fine line between grind and RNG vs casual and fun is taxing and once there is a better alternative out there, I’ll park my characters in their home cities, do a salute and sign off, if I havent done so sooner. I’ll try out TESO but I don’t have high hopes. EQ Next will probably be the game for me…the game I thought this one would be.
let me get this straight.
the endless mobs in all the maps, and world bosses spawning every few hours everyday, doing nothing but die for us… how they are different from the invasions and scarlet?
The normal DE mobs in the zones do not spawn and die for us. Centaurs take camps, water towers. Risen take over a camp in Orr, waypoint is now contested and all npcs dead.
These invasion mobs spawn and literally stand there until we come by.
Indifferent on the different cut scene as a whole.
What I found silly and borderline dumb was some of the dialogue. Faron, or whatever his name, is reached out to jenna. Jenna disappears because she was being protected countess anise utilizing mesmer clones. Faron says something stupid like “Oh I shall save you my queen, have no fear!”… and “Oh I did not expect this, gee golly”. He falls and dies.
I have three issues with this: Either you tried to make Faron’s dialogue comedic on purpose to fit his character…but subsequently his joke is less tragic now because of the comedy. Or this was a genuine attempt at a serious tragedy. I didnt like the sequence with Faron.
The second issue is: I think I listed to the whole scene, and I don’t think anyone cared that faron fell to his death because countess anise used a mesmer clone. If I were logan I would be like “Seriously? What are you thinking? Faron is dead. We need to communicate better? What am i going to tell his family? what is wrong with you people that you couldnt tell me? Faron would not have reached out for Jenna, and he’d still be alive today!” Instead Logan was just annoyed that he wasnt included in the plan to conceal Jenna. Not that Faron was dead, but because he wasn’t included. Like, he wasn’t picked for kickball or something.
The last issue, is why did jenna continue to use Watchwork things to protect her after one malfunctioned because of scarlet? Uh, hint: Don’t do that, scarlet can control them.
Those are the only issues I had
For once, we are having a civil conversation about the positives and negatives of guild wars 2. I applaud you all.
To stir things up, consider this scenario:
Guild wars 2, where ascended gear does not exist. Laurels do not exist. Commendations do not exist. Experience, Gold, Karma, Dungeon tokens exist. You can obtain max stat exotic set from any dungeon farming, or purchasable from Karma since Karma is universally awarded from most content in the game. Any gear set(zerker, carrion, rampager, knights, etc) can be obtained from either of these methods.
So now you have a max stat set and you want to look cool. The skins you seek could be from another dungeon so you dungeon farm again. Or, through difficult skill challenges. Lets say there is an instanced mini dungeon to complete in order to obtain a zodiak skin. These challenges are scattered throughout the world for the respective gear slots and variety.
So now you have your max stat set, you look cool. Whats next? Enjoy the game. All content rewards the same amount of gold, karma, experience whether you are in Queensdale or Orr. The question is: Do you like hearing the stories of the farmers in queensdale? Or do you want the challenge Orr poses? Maybe your guild wants a challenge, so they’ll go to Orr. Maybe you want to play out the story of defending the water towers in Queensdale from Centaurs…defend them while workers plug the holes. It doesn’t matter. Maybe you are bored of the green scenery in Queensdale, so you head to Timberline Falls for a variety scenery of snowy hills alongside green grass and rocky cliffs over your shoulder. So you head there and complete content. It all rewards the same things. Its just personal preference, difficulty vs leisure. Soloable content vs content that may require some guildees or pugs to work together. This is all dependent on the difficulty for each zone and DE being adjusted accordingly.
Would you play that game?
Edit: The Dynamic Event system for every zone will be multi layered. Each zone will have three or four layers of DEs. Layer A can contain 50 DEs and their subsequent chains. After a few days on a set rotation(to which only arenanet will know), Layer A Deactivates and Layer B activates with its 50 events. There will be no conflict between A or B. This will keep things fresh.
(edited by cesmode.4257)
I dont know if this would be another carrot on a stick.. but if there was an achievement for completing all dynamic event content in the game at least once(and all of the parts of chains), do you think we will see more people in the open world?
While I loathe yet another thing to check off, I think this would be better in getting people out into the world instead of saying "Hey, there are invasions, go kill hundreds of mobs in 45 minutes)….and then you see this invasion and its a group of idiot mobs that have no purpose or pathing set up, they stand there until attacked. Yah, fun.
Id rathe rsee people completing the dynamic content that is already in the world, throughout the entire world.
When they first started doing these invasions the first thing that came to mind was Rift.
That was my first thought. But here they are on a different level of class – worse!. My brother showed me Rifts and they were spectacular, not a zergfest. They are varied, monsters are interesting, they just have something in them that give you goose bumps.
Edit: In Rift I feeled tension, I knew that powerful enemy was attacking, you had to be careful. Here we have bunch of colorful toons screaming “YAAAHHOOOOOO!” and just farming loot.
This is nothing like the Rift invasions. In rift, these things would come out of rifts and just run in a direction killing a town. Killing the NPCs. Eventually, they establish footholds…where we have to defeat the mobs there(which contained some powerful mob), destroy the foothold so that the town can return.
Here, the mobs stand still like target dummies until we zerg and wipe them. Theres no threat to tyria.
I was wondering the same thing last night, as the OP. These invasion mobs are just sitting around in the zone picking their noses until the zerg comes to wipe them out. What happened to them knocking over water towers (centaurs in manifesto!), or setting a camp on fire? I hate to bring the manifesto up, but its really funny. Colin said something like “In most games, you get a quest telling you whats happening. In guild wars 2, you see it. You see centaurs destroying XYZ”. True, we did. But did that whole effort stop with living story? Spawn 30 mobs, let them stand there emotionless until we decide to kill them? How come they aren’t trying to ransack the nearest town?
While this update is a lotbetter than previous living story (more action and a bit better story telling), it’s kind of silly…just a huge loot farm. Like Pavilion.
Wheres the AI? Wheres the purpose?
ANet has a very heavy hand when it comes to encouraging people to do different things.
10 days to an ascended ring in fractals, 35 days otherwise (25+250 badges (which has stopped dropping btw)).
Two weeks of guild missions (+5g) to get ascended accessories or 40 days + 50 ectos.
Grind fractals for a backpiece or grind out a motherlode of T6 materials and ectos. When they make a change to encourage specific behavior they don’t kid around. It sometimes becomes very difficult to play the game you like and not the game they want you to like.
However, they are also upgrading the reward system a piece at a time. This is probably due to development constraints. They over-increased rewards for champions recently, which is why we have a farm.
But really there is only three options here. First, this gets corrected at a future date, second we have crazy inflation, or three they add additional gold sinks so you have to champion farm.
I’m guessing it will be fixed.
This is exactly one of the behaviors that has soured me on the game. I dont want to be encouraged. I want to play however I want to play. That is what I was told to do.
How I wanted to play:
-Get to max level
-Get as many toons to max level as I can
-Pick one or two toons to focus on.
-Gear up those two characters with max stat gear
-Enjoy the game(dungeons for fun, WvW for fun, exploration for fun, achievement hunting for fun).
Instead, with the ever shifting ‘max stat’ gear..I have to adjust my playstyle to acquire such gear. Oh I know I dont need max stat gear. I can do any content in blues and grees, oh I know. But I want to be effective, impactful, a help to my team rather than a possible detriment. Yes skill comes into play, but so do stats. And when we are talking about Masterwork gear vs Ascended gera, I’,m sorry..thats an enormous stat differential. Not to mention, I just want BiS gear. Its just a tick, if you want to call it that. I want BiS then enjoy the rest of the game.
Can’t do that when they infused ascended gear into the game over time.
Play how you want to..lol.
Hey, for example… can I acquire a the clockwork mini by just doing jumping puzzles or dungeon crawling? Nope.
I play for the rewards, because I know the fun comes with the journey to receive them. Just wish the rewards were less RNG based, and more skill based!
What happens when the rewards are soured by poor development choices, or some direction you do not like. And if that happens over and over..wouldnt playing for rewards become less enjoyable?
I agree with a few of you that extrinsic should come naturally while enjoying the intrinsic. But.. Take any of the living story updates. Lots of “grind” or farm. A lot of repetitive content whether it be countless invasions and meatbags to kill, or sitting in pavilion farming events, or running aspect arena dozens of times for the achieve. We are checking off achieves to make sure we have the required number of achieves that give us the big shiney chest at the end.
I dont know about you guys but I enjoy these invasions and pavilion for a little while, then it does become a boring mindless grind to get the carrot at the end. But everyone is doing it. Other areas of the game are less populated as a result, and yes my game experiences is moderately impacted. My guild is involved in the story, so naturally Ill just follow them if I want to interact.
I’d have to say mini Liadri. It’s the only one that shows off your skill rather than your luck with RNG boxes or completing fairly easy achievements.
Mini Risen Balth are pretty common too imo. Anyone with an 80 will eventually have enough leftover karma to blow on Orr boxes.
Yeah, Id say Liadri.
I dont have one yet. Not sure I have the mental fortitude to withstand dozens of attempts. But that fight and those like it are what makes games worth playing.
Good thoughts. To avoid events becoming boring after repeating them a few times, why not continually put new ones in there and have them activate after a few days. Let those run, then deactivate those, and activate another set.
I know that events are extremely complicated. I recognize that. A lot of factors to consider. However, Arenanet, and all of us, want to enter a zone and see an event unfolding that we’ve never seen before even if we have been to that area a dozen times before. I am more inclined to partake in that event.
Have multiple layers of events. Each layer is only active for a set number of time (only arenanet will know this). Once layer A deactivates, Layer B activates. Etc. Keeps things fresh. A lot of content. Tons of content. And you will not need to worry if the content in Layer B conflicts with anything in Layer A because Layer A will be completely deactivated.
Keep the thoughts and opinions coming. Makes a good read and I can definately see this getting into a philosophy discussion too.
Shadowpuppet, I agree.
Legendaries should have been that way, instead of a precursor. I think they got the hint, and they are going to give us a scavenger hunt. But again, I fear that will be more of “collect xyz, kill abc”. I want a long quest line, a long personal story that is tailored for the legendary that I am going after. And the last boss will be one that won’t be easily dispatched. Difficulty like Liadri, maybe a bit harder.
Right now, to get anything in the game all you need are a combination of the following:
-Lots of time
-Lots of gold
-Lots of luck
-Lots of Real Life Cash.
Pains me to say, that getting the best looking gear in WoW took some coordination as a guild and skill. Here, we just need to farm forever.
Hi,
I am curious how people feel about instrinsic rewards vs extrinsic rewards with regards to MMO, specifically Guild Wars 2. We are bathed in rewards for everything we do right down to achievement points. Do you feel that this type of behavior detracts from people playing the game to simply have fun or not?
Quick facts:
An intrinsic reward is an intangible award of recognition or a sense of achievement motivation, in any endeavor when one feels conscious satisfaction. It is the knowledge that one did something right, or one made some body’s day better.
An extrinsic reward is an award that is tangible or physically given to you for accomplishing something as recognition of ones endeavor.
So it is a matter of “I did XYZ because it was fun and that was a really cool event!” vs “i did XYZ because Im gaining better crafting materials, better loot, more minis, currencies, etc”.
My opinion:
The game cannot be void of reward entirely, but being showered in it as much as we are does detract from people playing the game to have fun. The sheer amount of rewards, and the diversity of rewards, encourages this behavior. I think reducing the amount and diversity to a small number of different rewards would yield a more positive expreience.
Forum-discuss on with your thoughts.

Who cares?
Even still, its so easy to come by…
What about sylvari shroom heads. Not stylish for today’s tyrian lifestyle imo.
Oh yah forgot about those. Hilarious.
Still going with Braham.
I vote for the first person who can spell hairdo.
Haha I knew something looked wrong!
Edit: fix’t.
I don’t want more rewards. I want less. I want less different forms of currency and leave us only with a handful that can be used to acquire most anything we want. Have this reward be given for everything we do(DE, hearts, jumping puzzles, wvw keep capture, crafting, etc. This enables us to play and do literally whatever we want because anything we do, we are receiving the same reward.
This removes the “urge” to rush to complete this before they are no longer available
This removes the herding to certain spots or content to farm X items
This enables me to play however I want to play.
Every single Asura afro.
Hahahaha. When I see one of these in game, I want to take a poolstick and poke it.
Id probably knock over the little asura, unfortunately.
Darn right I’m talking about our glorious leader Trahearne
Moving on…
Oh no you di’int.
“commanduh, I am a necromancuh, but I can wield a greatsword because Arenanet said I could”
I vote Braham (Broham!). Whoever created this guy must have been drunk. Everytime I see him I lol.
“Ey Rox, Holla”
Oh please.
We had a sylvari single handedly (with very little or no help from your main character) defeat Zhaitan. He is truly the hero of Tyria and famous.
And you’re asking for more Sylvari?! Please.
Vol,
I know youre not talking about Trahearne!! Please please tell me you are not supporting Trahearne here! How dare you breathe his name! The worst friendly NPC, EVARRRR.
Some quick quotes from our almighty Trahearne:
-“Commanduhhh , a word please…” x 50 times…always needs my help.
-“Commanduhhh, what do you think?”
-“Commanduhhh, I don’t think the pact likes me as Marshal”
-“Commanduhhh, life is like a box of chocolates—you never know what youre gonna get”
Ok, so I made that last one up.
GW2 is a MMO, it has to have some time-gated content to keep you playing.
Didn’t the developers say back before release they were fine with players taking extended breaks from the game?
Thats kind of what I thought too. Time gated stuff and long time tables for these things will have me running into the arms of another mmo where I expect this sort of behavior.
