It’s different in MOBA’s because you can just farm all game and 1v5 the whole enemy team in the end.

Something to be said for this. in a moba a much stronger player in the lane can outclass and outgear his rivals. Leading to a mechanical advantage later on the game that might allow one to carry. this is not true in gw2.

Thieves kind of stink in SPVP.

thiefs really have only 1 viable build, though ive seen a few thiefs make other specs work….it always seem a bit less than ideal and could have been a function done better by someone else.

They are not spectacular but a good thief is still solid. I wouldn’t care if they got a mild buff, especially to there off weapon set. haste nerf really hurt pistol whip.

Tbh ele +engy is quite good. Guardian +any roamer is also good (ele , thief).
Or side point holder +roamer or bunker. Ranger/guardian. Ranger/ele. all are good.

But, engies are good defensive roamers, and eles are the best far point pushers in the game, so this is not a bad combo at all.

You might have gained more mmr on the wins that he did because of your relative relationship to the people you beat. But the leaderboards are definitely a little confusing.

Not only is it hard to rise up in solo Q, but as you do get your mmr to rise, you eventually end up more likely to face premades and cause your mmr to plummet again.

I just had an awesome idea for this. if a player leaves a match prior to its completion DOUBLE the mmr reduction for the loss.

If a player leaves a match that’s a win, NO mmr gain.

I think this would be a great avenue to explore game modes. So if they create alternative game modes this is the place to test them.

Additionally maybe a handicap, like being able to give red 150 points at start or what have you.

Just wanted to jump in and say thanks for trying to be constructive guys. Solo queue (and splitting ratings) is something we have planned. We just need to finish up other features before we can get to that one.

That’s good to hear. I assume what you have planned is solo/duo Q. so people can Q with one friend if they so wish. Is this an update that is a priority? As in (I know asking for dates right). might we see it ‘soon’ or ‘down the line’.

Ele’s are still the strongest class imo. Guardians also (just look at em dominate the leaderboards). BUT. Hgh engies are definitely in the conversation. But (and maybe its bc I play an engy) I still find eles to be the most annoying aspect of spvp.

This is one of the big greiences I have with the game. I dropped from #47 to like 900, going from team quing to solo quing.

Since I solo Q mostly my mmr frequently tanks. Sigh , I don’t want it to reflect poorly on my guild though makes no sense.

the lack of a solo Q at times makes me want to quit. got 4 premades in a row solo Quing today. its literally killing my enjoyment of the game.
Am I only going to be able to enjoy spvp during that brief time when I have a team online?

Thiefs and mesmers are NOT op. mesmers are pretty strong. And eles are indeed a little bit strong.

I didnt even say that they are op or not. It is still obvious that this classes are much easier to play than others. And yes, i’ve played all classes, just except necro.

I think thiefs are kinda easier to play at low end but require a lot of skill at high end.
Very few thiefs that are considered truly scary.

What the thief does is come in and finish an ele someone else has a started. a good thief will backstab when the ele doesn’t have protection and is under 60%. thief burst is one of the ways to bring down an ele b4 it kites away and heals up.

If your hgh engy converts to pistols you might be able to defeat an ele in a 1on1 (but not kill it he will kite out and heal up). and at least for me, a really good ele will still win that 1on1.-sometimes if I have like a lot of might from a previous fight and 25 corruption stacks though ill fair better.

Im afraid theres no solution to human behavior that can be coded. The best thing u can try and do is to form a team and run premades. As someone who solo ques for the bulk of my games, I can relate to this pain.

I don’t like the spvp mode i find really dull and boring and i don’t play it. Occasionally when you’re winning you will be changed over the loosing team why? its like the game tell you to not play so good that you’re enemy ragequit give them a chance seriously.

Part of the reason the population is low is because of a lack of features. Its kinda a self fulfilling prophecy at this point. I know several ppl who have quit pvp bc they cant solo Q and don’t want to wait for only premades to play.

Yap hotjoins are dominated by thiefs/mesmers. If its any consolation, the higher the level of play you go the less you will see this.

so if you want to get serious about tourney pvp start quing up and farming up ur mmr. Once you get a high rating teams like this disappear as that sort of team comp will get you destroyed when your facing decent opponents.

I’ll keep that in mind. If it helps, I’m an Engineer and not a very good one.

Learn it, its got a high skill cap, in particular learning to land the blinds in a 1on1 situation.
But once learnt its one of the strong ways to play in the game.

Why do slows reduce movement skill ranges?

If Eles would benefit more from a Ride The Lightning that is reduced by slows but still enables utility skill usage, I say GREAT. As long as the game mechanics of Ride The Lightning are consistent with other dashes.

When I’m encountering an Ele, and I cripple them, I want to know that in order for the Ele to travel the maximum 1200 range with Ride The Lightning, they must put in the effort of noticing that cripple I put on them, putting in the effort to condition-cleanse that cripple off, then time their dash appropriately and use it.

Sounds like so much of a burden, right? Oh wait. Every other class in the game must go through that exact same troublesome process as mentioned above when using their leaps and dashes. Every other class must put in that effort of cleansing slows in order to achieve maximum move skill range. So why don’t Eles. How come NOBODY has answered this question. Everyone tip toes around it but fails to answer it.

But ultimately, Eles aren’t even the main topic of discussion here. The real question is: Why do slows even affect the range of moving skills in the first place? And even with that in mind, why do certain moving skills get affected by slows, while other moving skills are immune to slows. What is the point of such discrimination and inconsistency with game mechanics? One of the largest aspects of GW2 PvP is appealing to casual gamers with simple-to-understand mechanics. So why is this mechanic so bogged down with confusing inconsistencies.

Honestly the best way for them to introduce alternative game modes is through custom arenas. so they can get feedback, like do players really like it , or only theoretically like it. And what if any are the balance issues.

Given the issues with balancing round 1 game mode, I think at the end of the day only 1 can remain official, and that’s likely to still be conquest.

This has been happening only very recently, past few days. And several guildies/friends have complained about it. However, in the past few hours it hasn’t happened so idk if maybe its fixed-but it may remain a problem for other people. I’ll update here if the crashes continue.

I understand that the devs who appear on the sotg are not the ones making the decisions as to what they can and cant say. Im asking them to campaign for at least( as ostrich said) a roundabout way to indicate general changes.
If they cant, they cant I don’t blame them. But I think its not a good strategy to be so completely silent about major changes. Not least because our reactions to said changes will be more moderate. Most people felt haste nerf was fine, and where just upset with its disparate impact on the warrior. we didn’t need to know what was being done to haste, but it would have been nice to know SOMETHING was being done with haste.

My game is repeatably kicking me to character select from HOtm. A lot of people seem to be having this bug, but im having it happen fairly frequently, every half hour or so.

Wonder if anyone else has been having issues with the game crashing in hotm.

People have been getting so off topic in this thread after its main question was answered by J sharp.

This isn’t a thread to suggest balance changes just because a dev replied. This is a thread to discuss the pros and cons of splitting balance across the 3 different game types guild was is split into.

Although honestly, what are the cons?

One con I can think of , is the split between wvwvw and pve. It might be the case if abilities moved that someone might want to respec between the two realms. This could easly be solved by giving us dual specs, or making wvwvw like hotm where your spec changes when you go there.

Overall though, there is MASSIVELY more pro’s to be gained splitting things up. If your game is to be serious about pvp you need to be serious about balance.

I think its the opposite of something wrong. Video games started becoming competitive around quake 1. With serious guilds and teams forming then. its only gone on since then.

YOu have people in this world making a living from playing video games. Look basketball is still played for fun, and very casually. But there are different levels of competitiveness as well. UP to and including a level you can make a living from. And theres a handful of video games. (league, starcraft). that if your good enough at them, you can live of playing em.

A couple things:

  • For PvE/PvP/WvW, we know that those are 3 different playstyles, we don’t just lump PvE and WvW together.

Considering WvW and PVE use the same skill values, yes you do.

We’re starting to split PvE/WvW in the upcoming patch.

But we want them to be things that keep consistency across the game types as much as possible.

Please don’t do this. I don’t want to have to constantly pay to respec and get completely different gear for WvW and relearn to play my character as well.

I think they are talking about skill value changes, to make it balanced. Not fundamental mechanic changes, you really shouldn thave t relearn anything.

@The devs. allow people to have a saved spec, so we can tab between two builds. Instead of having to respec for different aspects of the game.

Phantasm mesmers are quite strong 1on1. Can be very hard to beat. First thing, always include your class in threads of this nature. The most important thing is to dodge the sword spin clone , and if you can quickly find the real Mesmer get him on him hard. They are still often vunerable to conditions.

Another thing, is phantasm mesmers are not particularly strong in team fights, much less so than shatter, so it might be you need to avoid the 1on1, and beat them in the 5on5.

Well eventually people would start to manually sort by class. Oh that’s the top engy, that’s the top ranger etc etc. Also Solo Q leaderboards would be interesting in showing class balance issues perhaps. though some classes are obviously fine , but in a way that wouldn’t allow them to carry in solo Q situation. Like Mesmers.

Double the cap time on picking up orb. As it sancturary guardians etc can sometimes pick it up without being able to be stopped even if u are there.

If I can make a suggestion: The cap time on the orb is incredibly low, like 2 seconds. This allows things like guardian to sanctuary cap etc. IN some cases making it nearly or even literally impossible to stop. Or someone can cap if they land a knockdown.

My request. Double the cap time. That would still make it quite quick.

All scorpions are the same, he cant move stats around, change up his gear or abilities, etc etc.

I like to solo q. But it does cost me a ton of games. I also sometimes premade, and when im done premading and dragging my mmr way up, i solo q and drag it way back down.
I wish they introduced a proper solo/duo Q. That would address this a lot. Though it would still probably be dominated by ele /guardian. As that’s the easiest class to carry with. Still be nice.

1vs1 cant be balanced without mirroring. (ie making everything the same). I’m not saying any particular spec will beat every other spec. I’m saying that a ladder is designed to express skill as a variable, and it does that more proficiently with team games as individual rock paper scissors issues wash out by compensatory teammates. (As an aside that’s the big issue with this ladder lumping in solo quers and premade players-it means less of the variable of skill is being expressed).

Now as opposed to 1vs1 matchups, depending on class and spec any particular match may be a fordrawn conclusion as long as the two players are in the same ballpark of skill. This means that skill gets expressed LESS in 1on1 matchups than teamfights expressing teamskill. hence team games are better suited for a ladder.

That’s as easily as i can explain it. YOu still have yet to provide an example of a single diverse build game with 1on1 balance. If you cant , your asking the devs to do something not yet done in the history of gaming successfully-that in my opinion makes it a candidate for being an unreasonable request.

Regardless i am done with this conversation. As its obviously not going anywhere.

I don’t agree with you that it can’t be done. Unless you show proof that this is the case, it’s just an assertion you make. And what does it mean “you can’t balance 1v1” anyway? Are you saying there will always be a dominant class that can’t be beaten? That’s not true. There is a counter for every build in existence. Even eles and guardians.

So what can I say? I have to disagree with you that 1v1 cannot be balanced.

As for sacrificing 1v1 utility for team use…what’s the problem? Let them.

You can’t prove a negative. But you are asscerting a positive. So the burden of proof lays with you. So name 1 mmo, or moba, with 1vs1 balance. wow? no. warhammer? no. Rift? no. League of legends(the biggest esports game in the world by a mile)? no. Dota 2? No. Yet several of those games are successful esports where people make serious money playing them.

So i’m going on precedent, taking the fact that its never been done as evidence it can’t be done. And yes, no particular build would be unbeatable. The issue is that in 1on1 its as much about rock paper scissors as it is about skill. If you happen to fight a reasonably equally skilled player running a build that counters yours, you lose. That happens less in teamfights, as you have more versatility due to your teammates.
This is the crucial point, 5vs5 tournaments demonstrate at a higher level of accuracy which team is stronger than 1vs1 demonstrating who is the better player.

So name 1 mmo with 1on1 balance. (assuming build diversity, not a game with exact or nearly exact mirrors).

And this still wouldn’t solve the min/maxing problem. Where people trade of individual power for group utility.
