1vs1 balance is less attainable than team balance, therefore 1vs1 ladder would mean even less.
No game, with the sort of skill diversity you find in an mmo can balance properly for 1on1. Heck even games like dota 2, league of legends, etc, are not balanced for 1vs1.
If you don’t like to co operate with other s, that’s fine, they should introduce a solo q. But it would still be 5vs5 conquest. If you really want 1on1, then maybe a fps or something is right for you.
But most esports games, are teamsports games.
Thiefs and Mesmers are not OP . My goodness look at the ladder. do you see all thiefs and mesmers at the top? NO.
Hotjoins have a prevelance of thiefs and mesmers but not tournies. Hotjoin is annoying, but not competitive, try that vs a real team and you would get destroyed.
It isn’t done because it cant be done. What would happen is it would become fairly apparent, fairly quickly that a particular class with X spec is the best 1on1, and its that or bust.
Also the game is conquest, 5vs5. Not 1on1 duels. So, its a 5on5 conquest ladder.
edit: however one issue with ladder is lumps solo quers, and teams together
.
(edited by daydream.2938)
so league of legends ladders don’t count?
world of warcraft ladders don’t count?
none of these, NONE us 1 vs 1 as balance metric.
What your calling for here just isn’t done.
Other than hgh conditions, the only other build ive seen is hgh power.
30,0,0,30,10 with rifle instead. Im not sure of any other way id want to play an engy.
I mean everything else seems subpar however, ive seen some really good 1on1 builds of late, that can beat a hgh in 1on1. But seem to suck balls outside of that context.
To add another layer, often the best specs for soloing , are not the same as they way you would spec for a team .
But to win a 2vs1 is nearly impossible.
Thiefs are a problem now?
Its certainly gotten worse, my solo Q experience has gone downhill fast, theres a lot more premades out since the leaderboards. Which actually justifies a team Q even more.
“real skill is displayed in 1on1” on the contrary, 1on1 has way more balance variables than 5vs5. Theres too much rock paper scissors, whereas in a 5vs5 u can more consistently win by compensating for each other.
These leaderboards, in my opinion, are actually very very credible. At first I was somewhat skeptical that they were garbage. But today I can definitely feel confident about my assessment in their validity.
Case in point – Ostrich Eggs is rank 40 currently. Great engineer, somewhat of a sellout, but good player none the less. At rank 51, just 11 spots behind, is the completely daft ranger talent of Bonesx. Literally the best ranger you have never heard of. That this leaderboard was able to capture their talent and evaluate how close these two players are in actual skill was amazing to me. Seeing this made me know that yes – these leaderboards are legit.
(These are as of this post)
Rank 49: 9 wins, 6 losses, 60% win percentage.
Rank 623: 103 wins, 33 losses, 75.37% win percentage.
Completely ignoring the fact that #623 destroys #49 in games, you’re telling me that in only 15 games, #49 has more kills, captures, points, whatever else you can think of to earn over 500+ spots higher on the list?
I call bull. Can someone link to the algorithm/formula they use to calculate these rankings?
they reset w/l ratio without resetting rating. so that person could have earned his rating over hundreds of games and what ur seeing is the tip of the iceberg. This is an issue as it makes the leaderboards look really funky.
However, even if w/l had been reset at same time as a rating reset, w/l would merely correlate much more highly with rating than it does now. As who you lose to, and who you beat matters a lot.
The closest thing to game breaking is eles on spirit watch.
One confusing thing is the w/l reset that didn’t reset rating. It means the correlation between displayed w/l ratio and rating is very weak. Additionally, a decently ranked player might not have a great w/l bc he probably faces top teams very frequently if he ques. But he might genuly be better than someone who plays on obscure times knocks of a bunch of wins vs bad pugs.
I know it’s an oversimplification and probably condescending. And no, it’s not aoe spam in tourneys. AoE spam is standing off a point and throwing nades on a point and hoping someone walks into them. actually LANDING grenades on a moving target actively engaging you requires far more skill than landing a mark in the same situation. Cluster bombs can (and should) be blown up mid air when over the target making them far easier to land because of the speed of the slow moving cluster bombs. Staff eles are just lol, I can’t really comment on them.
Must be really hard to land those on a small node, especially on a melee class, or someone trying to kite around on that tiny node in order to prevent it being uncapped, or especially (!) after using that whooping supply kit elite, rite?
The engi really has it all:
- OP cond damage which can only be parralleled by necros when a dozen of boons is corrupted successfully, or a dozen of cond stacks is returned successfully (how sad is dat),
- OP boon stacking (seen my fair share of engins running around with 25 might stacks and a handful of other boons at the same time),
- Good CC (moar knockbacks please),
- OP damage from both weap sets and the kitten turrets.
Talk about ritualist gone bad. At least it takes somewhat more skill ( I guess?) than a ritualist does, and than eles do, so that’s a plus.Having said that, I really love playing with engis as a necro. Most likely my n1 choice of a ‘partner’ next to a good warrior that can quickly discern a corrupt on a stack of boons, including stability, and follows up with their damage.
P.S. Necro wand and dagger offhand aoe are a pain in the meow to land, because they hit with half a sec/one sec delay on top of their nearly 1 s cast time.
Some of what your posting isn’t accurate. For example good knockbacks. Grenade kit has no knockback, and so one would have to take rifle over p/p. Regretfully rifle reduces conditions.
Engies can have great conditions, or great knockbacks, not both at same time.
Most ppl are happy leader boards are out, they just look at people who have 7 wins 6 losses and go, how is that on the leaderboards.
Wasn’t it Desolation that became the final refuge for what’s left of srs pvpers?
ON EU. Not Na.
HELP. Why im have 150 wins 20 luze in TPVP and im not in top100… coze im 35 rank?
The leaderboards don’t provide enough information. Ppl have like 7 wins 6 losses on it but really your seeing th etip of the iceberg, they might actually have 1400 wins, 900 losses or something like that.
The w/l correlation with rating is extremely weak bc they reset w/l and didn’t reset rating.
Necros are not a weak class, they might be one of the best balanced classes.
big issue is they didn’t reset rating when they reset win/loss tracking.
this means what you see in a persons win /loss is really the tip of the iceberg of how they are doing.
To compensate for this they need to raise the minimum game threshold, because that few wins would never allow one to earn even close to that rating.
I think 50 game minimum , heck even 30 game minimum. How about the 7 wins, 6 losses guy.
Because I want to play and don’t always have a team available. And yes, its an issue.
he mains, and has mained for some time a ranger
His original toon and for some time main was a warrior. but he switched quite a while back. You might see him dally on the warrior now and then.
just to give a feedback when ladder was visible i was somewhere around around 30 then i started doing some soloqueue and lost like 3 – 4 games and now i am not top 100 XD. it is very very soloqueue unfriendly…
Right, I find that because I occasionally premade, but mostly solo Q , after running in premades when I go back to solo Quing I end up fighting really good teams, often premades, despite pugging.
right the win/loss track doesn’t match the rating track. which is aggravating.
As a result of this, the minimum game threshold should be notably higher. As people with 7 wins 6 losses being on the leaderboard makes it look very non representative.
A new person today with 7 wins 6 losses would not be on the leaderboards, pretty much no matter who they beat with those 7 wins.
What confuses me is they reset win/loss but didn’t reset rating. Now I know that rating isn’t perfectly correlated with win/loss as it depends who you beat, and who you lose to. But , some people being on the leader board with 7 wins 6 losses, seems kinda….odd.
Um , I miss three round tournaments but I think this would be a bit too elaborate.
a little bit of it is learning the build, I think a lot of ppl just don’t know how to fight vs a hgh engy. However, it really is a strong build so its not purely people needing to l2p.
Na/ Eu players don’t play each other in spvp. unless you reroll to that other region.
THANKS! for bringing leaderboards out. But , some ppl are listed on the Lb with like 11 games played, that’s got to be too small to be representative. should be a minimum threshold of like 30 or even 50 games played.
And I notice a lot of oceanic ppl on it. Not that there aren’t terrific oceanic players, but as if running premades doesn’t give you advantage enough, doing it at what amounts to noon in America means you face nearly all pugs.

The leaderboards are out>?
Hgh is quite strong, im all for it being toned down a bit when they manage to give us another spec worth playing.
WvWvW is very fun if you take a small team of friends and roam in small groups looking to gank/take camps while hanging out. Now in order to do this succesffuly your team does need to be 80 and reasonably well geared. Otherwise you will need to zerg ride.
Gear can make a big difference in WvWvW. Zerg riding gets dull fast, but small group ganking can be quite fun.
If your going to get feedback you need to post your playtimes, whether your Eu or Na.
etc
1. build diversity. One of the big issues is the recent haste nerf really took away build diversity from the thief, and nearly killed the warrior. Ideas for solving that.
My own though is that they need to do a pve/pvp balance split, I think as long as they keep the mechanic of the abilities the same (or very similar) they can make adjustments without confusing people. Values of skills would change from pvp/pve anyway due to different stats.
Another fundamental issue is that most things cant be taken because they don’t allow you to cover your bases properly, a fully turret spec engy for example , doesn’t have a stun breaker. They may need to add mutually exclusive and different ways for people to cleanse/stun break. Because I know a lot of people don’t expand there build precisely because they cant achieve the required amount of cleansing or stun breaks.
by making the different ways mutually exclusive, or pointless to double up on, they can prevent OP cleanse bots.
Anyways, some thoughts.
Tbh I really enjoyed and look forward to the SOTG. It was the best avenue for feedback we had from the devs, whatever you though it was worth.
This is a good bunch of guys. And more importantly an active guild that already makes premades a few nights each week.
I don’t think it was a fair fix. It was about as fair a fix as was the frenzy nerf; it crippled an already underperforming class. I was perfectly fine with epidemic as it was before and didn’t even know it was operating in that fashion. Necros are already poor condition damage classes in comparison to their brethren with easy access to burning, now it’s just kind of pathetic. They still won’t be as good as engis or rangers and now that gap is larger.
Idk dude, necro boon stripping is amazing. If you’ve got a thief on vent, timing his backstab on an ele/guardian at same time you boon strip that’s incredibly powerful. I do agree that I didn’t feel necros where OP before, so in a sense a needless nerf. however I still necros are a pretty good class.
5 bunker, or 5 mes/thief would get rofled by a real team. I cant say ive ever had trouble fighting a group composed like that.
You will want a guardian bunker, and a fast roamer like an Ele.
The third option is really up to you, but id recommend, Mesmer or necro, or something with an instant res.
I remember someone saying that it has a tiebreaker feature, like kills or some such. Or, more likely they got 500 a 1/10th of a second before red team did.
Wow.
You fellas do realize this isnt DOTA or LoL. This is a different game with diffetent rules. Not everything will be discovered….look at Eles. They wrre considered the worst class…now look at em.
Balance isnt instantaneous but takes time. Quite frankly im sure those horrible classes are just fine but waiting for someone to discover a new build.
Just tired of reading whines in this forum.
ps. Remember the best parts of this game are WvW and PvE. Arena PvP is not
Meta changes more from devs than from players. Eles where the worst class, the devs buffed/fixed a lot of there abilities, and this caused there acesion in the meta fairly fast.
Most of the meta changes over the past few months are the result of adjustements from the devs, not player discoveries.
Just ignore the trash talkers, theres really no way to get rid of em.
A ranger can be difficult as hell to beat in 1on1, but not to kill in1on1. If I outplay em I can get the kill. though im a condi engy so maybe that helps.
Rangers are still quite strong, but have had a lot of recent nerfs, I think they are reasonably balanced atm. However, rangers are indeed 1 of the strongest 1on1 classes. That doesn’t necessarily make em op unless they had a lot of strong other things, and they don’t. They are ok, not great in team fights. They are not super mobile between points like ele. And I cant imagine why it would take 3 ppl to kill a ranger.
The main reason you cant carry in this game is because team work and communication are so important.
The main reason you can’t carry in this game is because everyone has standardized gear.
Rezzing, even if you down 2 people in a 1v3… you still probably have completely lost, gaining no kills as people start rallying back up.
And partly because its entirely BO based, so even if you are winning most fights, you can still lose terribly if the rest of your team doesn’t bother to cap stuff.
Or cant. Even if you are the strongest 1on1 player on the field you cant be everywhere at once. so if your constantly losing your other points while you take 1, that’s not going to cut it.
though some classes like ele carry much better than some others. Poor solo quing warriors
.
This is why they can never give us dates. They said, if we give you a timeline and run into delays, it will be worse than just saying soon. And you guys are proving em right. The reason they cant communicate more detailed timelines (even if they might be open to revision) is because of stuff like this.
DELAYS HAPPEN. ALL THE TIME.
Not to say im not frustrated, I wish they made some of this stuff in pvp a priority, but they are not lying to us.
Mesmers typically run 0 condition removal in tournies. 3 of there 4 utilities are usually for team. Illusion of life, portal and timewarp. the other one is a stun break, decoy or blink or mirror image.
so they have literally 0 condition removal in the typical meta. YOu can put condition removal on a Mesmer, but since that gives up there good stuff, not worth bringing a Mesmer, get something else.
Eles and rangers are strong 1on1 classes. Mesmers are middle of the pack, at least in the meta, its not ur job to be able to win a lot of 1on1s. though if they make a mistake you can certainly get em.
The first thing you will want to do is post about whatever class you want to play and get a good spec for it. WvwVW is a VERY different animal from spvp.
Im curious, are the leaderboards going to be a top 100 display?
how comprehensive will they be?
That’s a toplist not a leaderboard. It should display everyone.
everyone? what if someones only played 1 spvp tourney in the last month.
Or what if some guy did 10 matchs with premades during early afternoon, and is 10 and 0. He might be high up the leaderboards, without it really being representative.
I would love to find of a solution to this problem. Its a big barrier for new players learning the game.
Brain dump:
How many of your own cooldowns must you know to be effective. Skills? Traits? Sigils? Runes? Attunements? Kits? Transforms? Everything?
How many cooldowns are too many cooldowns / whats the minimum number to know?
Same question for enemies. How much skill is involved with remembering enemy cooldowns?
Would this new piece of UI benefit PvE the same amount?
Where could this UI live?
First thing that pops into my mind would look just like the quick-loot tray on the right side of the screen with a scrolling list of ordered cooldowns showing name/icon. (No loot in PvP)
I can’t think of any way this could work for enemies.
I suppose the possibility of allowing players to toggle on, or off whats on the display would be out of the question?
Im curious, are the leaderboards going to be a top 100 display?
how comprehensive will they be?
