From a spectator point of view, these all look great to me.

From a fairly casual (low ruby) pvp player point of view, they also look very good. I enjoy theorycrafting on builds and experimenting. These changes give me some new ideas.

Malicious sorcery and mantra charging

I’m curious if anyone has ever tested whether the attack speed increase on malicious sorcery would speed up the charging time of a mantra

I guess I don’t expect it to make the healing mantra charge time, but I’m thinking something like mantra of pain is an attack

Has anyone tested this?

It doesn’t have as many points as vipers, but I would definitely use it.

I’m really curious to see what is done with scepter. It’s probably my favorite weapon.

I think because there are only two mainhand weapons, it’s unlikely that it ever becomes completely single-purpose.

Given how all of the condi amulets have a downside in pvp, I’ve started to really like going with viper amulet. And then I really appreciate the direct damage on scepter.

We’ll see what happens

Take the block off the scepter or sword

eldenbri.1059

Hmmm – I’ve been playing with scepter more or less continuously for about 3 years.

I admit that the auto-attack is not that skillful per se, but even it has some decisions like whether you want another attack to fire now to get a clone or if you want to move on to another skill.

The block is very cool. At times, it can lead to tricky decisions about when and how to do it. Depending on your build, there is not only the defensive value of avoiding damage but also potentially a very big offensive payoff. And yet, it has counterplay both in avoiding attacking while the block is up and evading if you do hit the block. And, as the one using the block, you have to choose whether you’re better off ending it early and getting the blind or holding it to the final fraction of a second.

Because #3 skill pierces, you can get a lot more out of it if you’re paying attention to target selection and positioning. It has a painful windup, but there’s a grandmaster trait that makes it much more responsive if the weapon is important to your gameplay. And the power damage scaling makes it appealing as a hybrid weapon if you’re trying to do that.

[Dont Report Me Pls] Mesmer PvP Build

eldenbri.1059

For what it’s worth, this build inspired me to change my approach to using the Viper amulet. I’m not as good at defense and being disciplined to get out of bad fights like the OP, so I’m using runes of durability.

http://en.gw2skills.net/editor/?vhAQNAreWnknBlphVoBeoBEgilnjqeQP0F9sACgDDdxynDA-TJxHABA8EACf/BuLDIwpAAA

Like other posters here, I have trouble using Ether Signet. Reseting the block (and the Mental Defense trait) are really good, but there are times when I need a heal and 35 seconds is an eternity.

Also like some have suggested, I like staff better than great sword. The illusionary warlock hits hard (and is useful for diamond skin eles).

But the really big deal for me was realizing that Viper might be the best choice. I really would love a more pure condi build that had both toughness and vitality, but Viper just seems like a much better overall amulet than any of the “condi” choices (Rabid, Carrion)

Rooting problem

in PvP

Posted by: eldenbri.1059

eldenbri.1059

I’ve only noticed this happening in pvp. I’m wondering if anyone else has experienced it.

At some point, my character becomes unable to move with the normal movement keys (forward, strafe). I can rotate. I can use skills. I can type in chat. I can move via weapon or utility skills (e.g. blink).

This has happened to me five times over the last few weeks. I can’t tell the cause. It seems to always occur during/after combat, so my guess is that it’s the result of some “rooting” state being applied but not being cleared properly. There are no conditions on me and using a condi clear doesn’t resolve this. In one situation, I got attacked after about two minutes of being stuck. Somehow, that cleared the root. In other cases, the root only goes away once I get killed.

Has this happened to anyone else? I’m struggling to figure out how to report this as a bug since I never know specifically what happened to cause it.

Staff 4 - chaos armor

I’ve really grown to like staff as a weapon. But the #4 skill feels like it needs a little help.

I know it’s gone through a couple of revisions, and there’s a trait which always gives protection for chaos armor.

Without making things too complicated, it feels like just dropping the base recharge from 35 seconds down to something 25 seconds would make it a more realistic balance of value for cost (in recharge time). Alternatively, a little duration bump might make sense or increased durations of the effects?

Not urgent, but would be cool to see something in the January balance tweaks

This is the build I use for WvW roaming (and occasional dueling in guild arena)

It’s also a condition shatter build. With dire armor, it’s pretty survivable and with lots of blocks you can stay alive without stealthing.

The illusions are more survivable with a build like this.

To take down the warrior, I would try getting three illusions out and then do your F5 shatter. During that shatter, use gravity well and tides of time and all your shatters (and maybe chaos storm too). Then when the F5 ends, use those big cc skills again and hit him with the scepter 3. It’s really hard to clear all those condis – especially if you’re getting cc’d like crazy.

A lot of the posts here are… somewhat critical… so I just wanted to say that, for me, the league has been a lot of fun.

In about 130 games (nearly all solo), I went from no ranked experience up to ruby. There were a couple blowout games and a couple of times where people were jerks, but far and away, the experience was positive. This is now my favorite game mode.

I only have about 125 ranked games, but there are a couple things I still haven’t figured out that I really think I should know.

- How are the names chosen at the start of the fight (e.g. Sue vs Bob)?

- What are the exact mechanics for capping/decapping? Is a check made every second and as long as one team has the only characters in the circle (who are not stealthed or otherwise under some kind of no-cap condition) then 1/8 of the circle is filled/emptied?

- What information (beyond professions) should you be able to determine about the opposing team before the start of the fight?

Thx much for any help!

Thx! Yeah, I wrote that wrong. You didn’t say it was bad.

eldenbri.1059

Thx much for all the feedback!

There’s a really key point in all this that I’ve been asking myself – how far do I want to go in league play? I have really been having fun learning pvp. I’m not playing in the league to get the wings. I like having goals though, so I think I’d like to finish sapphire tier. But I don’t to cause my teammates problems along the way. Right now, it feels like if I choose my fights well, I am more of a help than a hindrance. So my plan is to stop playing league play when it feels like I’m no longer a help.

Since it takes me a while to learn new builds, I’m hoping that this one carries me through sapphire.

Pepsi, you said you thought Persistence of Memory wasn’t good. Can you say more about that? That trait feels like it’s amazingly good for me in this build. Every phantasm shatter takes 2 seconds off the recharge of all phantasm shatters. That include the iDefender phantasm from mental defense. With staff, shield, and iDefender phantasms and with the chronophantasma trait, I can drive the cooldowns really low on some of my key skills.

Anyway, thx again for the help!

Thanks much for the feedback. I hadn’t really been trying to use any of the stats as a measure until I heard Helseth mention it.

As someone who never played ranked pvp until this league started, I have quite a lot to learn.

In WvW roaming, I record video with the combat tab open and then go back to watch what I screwed up and where I played well. But in the pug pvp teams, I need the chat visible to see communication. I still record little bits of the fighting from time to time, but I was looking for some numbers that might help.

Signet of illusions in pvp

Posted by: eldenbri.1059

eldenbri.1059

Thanks for the feedback. This build is definitely not as team-oriented as the bunker build that many mesmers play. Since I’m always queueing by myself, there’s always this moment when the fight is about to start when the team starts talking strategy and someone asks if I’m a bunker mesmer. Nobody jumps for joy when I say “no, I’m condi”

That said, the build feels like it’s working pretty well for me. I can take home and typically hold against any single attacker (and usually kill them though a diamond skin ele or a bunker mes take a while). After I take home, I can usually get to mid to drop a bomb on that fight (gravity wells, chaos storm, tides of time) and still get back to protect home. And I am mobile enough I can get to far and often kick off a defender.

I’m clearly new enough at pvp and there are enough variables in the fight to make it still hard to kitten how well I’m really doing. But I’ve been wondering a bit about how much it’s really a problem that a build is “selfish” if it fulfills a clear role and helps the team win. In these pug teams, it’s really hard to predict how well people will coordinate (at least in my experience in sapphire tier).

In any case, here’s the build description since the editor site is not responding.

Weapons:
- Scepter/shield
- Staff

Utilities:
- Ether feast
- Blink
- Signet of midnight (20% condi duration passive, stun break with AoE blind active)
- Signet of illusions (%50 illusion life passive, reset F1-F4 active)
- Gravity well

Traits:
Inspiration
- Persisting images (%20 illusion life, retaliation on summon)
- Restorative illusions (heal and condi clear on shatter)
- Mental defense (illusionary defender on block/evade)

Illusions
- Persistence of memory (2 sec recharge reduction on phantasm shatter)
- Maim the disillusioned (torment on shatter)
- Malicious sorcery (20% cooldown reduction on scepter, 15% attack speed increase)

Chrono
- Time catches up (superspeed shatters)
- Illusionary reversion (shatter two illusions, get a clone)
- Chronophantasma (get a second copy of phantasm when you shatter first)

Sigils
- Leeching and energy on both sets (leeching is important for getting the punch on diamond skin eles for me)

Runes
- Nightmare (condi damage, condi duration, fear on hit)

Amulet
- Rabid (the precision is very low value but the condi damage and toughness are key)

Damage totals in pvp

I was watching some of Helseth’s shatter video yesterday, and he was talking about total damage contributed in a fight (I think he mentioned a scrapper could contribute 1,000,000 total damage…)

I’m trying to understand how to use this number appropriately when I’m looking at my performance in a fight. Is it actually valuable or does it depend too much on role, map, etc?

For reference, I’m playing a condi build and my total condi damage usually ends up around 200,000 with between 50K and 100K of direct damage on top of that. I’ve seen the condi damage total get as high as 400K, but that’s rare.

My role is usually to cap home and then come support mid while being able to get back home. How much I’m fighting and how many targets I have can vary a lot between fights.

So the basic question is – how, if at all, should the total damage stat be used to help improve performance? I can see how tracking this over many fights would be helpful in assessing changes I make in my build or playing style. Anything else? Are any of the other stats particularly meaningful?

I’m still pretty new to pvp (maybe 100 ranked games), but this build has been working reasonably well up to low-sapphire where I am now.

http://en.gw2skills.net/editor/?vhAQNAreWnknBlphVoBeoBEgilnj6sACgDreQP0FFdxynDA-TJxHwACOFAA3f4YZAAPBAA

I basically never see other mesmers running signet of illusions. I understand how portal can be much more powerful supporting teams and perhaps condi chrono is fairly rare already. Is there any other reason that people don’t use this signet?

In this build, signet of illusions feels like it gives a tremendous amount of benefit. The passive is quite nice for keeping illusions up when there’s AoE. And with the defender phantasm from Mental Defense and retaliation from Persisting Images, it provides a nice damage sponge and can actually help a bit with dps (I’ve seen 1000 damage in the logs from retaliation when all the hits get shared with iDefender).

But the active part is the thing that I really like. It takes 1.25 seconds to cast (a bit faster if I’m in scepter/shield with Malicious Sorcery) and it has a long cooldown. But casting it gives a minimum of four shatters which means:
- about 3500 healing
- four, single-condi clears
- 3 seconds of alacrity
- 1 second invuln
- 1 daze
- 5 stacks of confusion
- 4 stacks of torment

Granted, at any given point, some shatter is likely to be almost available, so maybe it only saves you 6 seconds on getting Mind Wrack back. But I tend to use this when I’ve over-committed and then I get focused. If I can get this signet cast, I can usually survive and sometimes down an opponent who’s pressing to finish me off.

Anyone else using this signet?

This is the condi chrono build I’m using. I’m low (mid-emerald) tier, so I don’t know how this performs in other levels. It’s more tanky than skcamow’s build, but doesn’t have stealth.

Good luck with your build!

Basic home start strategy

in PvP

Posted by: eldenbri.1059

eldenbri.1059

From my point of view as a lower-rank player playing in pugs, I think the tricky thing is that I don’t really know what to expect.

So here’s an example that just happened on Niflhel
- I said I would go home. A couple people said mid.
- I barely get on henge when an enemy scrapper shows up. We battle on the point for what seems like an eternity (maybe 30+ seconds). I finally down him and cap the point.
- Now I look around chieftain has not been killed, it looks like we have 3 on mid and 1 on far. I decide to kill chieftain.
- It still looks like 3 on mid and 1 on far, so I decide to go support mid. It’s too late. The battle has turned and we get wiped.

For me, the trick is that I don’t really know how fights should go, so I probably make some bad decisions. If the group decides to clearly go just 1 – 4, it reduces the number of decisions we need to make.

BTW – thx to some nice play from folks on the team, we ended up winning that match despite having the setback. But often, it feels like an early wipe at mid can be the beginning of the end.

Thx – this is all really helpful for me.

There are definitely cases where I’m orbiting around home, and I’ll see a teammate engaged in a 1v1. I usually try to hop in and dump a fair amount of CC’s and condi (having scepter 3 on a quick cast with malicious sorcery is nice) and then move back to the point. That feels pretty useful, but the off-point fights I can join in are not that common.

I think when I +1 a fight, I can make a decent difference if I go through my lockdown sequence (continuum shift, gravity well x2, tides of time x2). That can tip the scales.

Thanks – that’s really helpful!

I really do wish I could make use of the precision in the amulet, but nothing that I’ve tried seems very efficient. Condis usually aren’t the biggest problem for me since the shatters all remove condis, the heal clears two, and I can pop the illusions signet and get four more clears. But maybe generosity is still a better option. Leeching helps both with healing and against diamond skin eles (though that’s usually a stalemate)

I can try the idea of going mid and then being able to rotate to other points and come back. In these pug matches, there isn’t always a lot of communication to let me know where to go. But this is still something interesting to try – thx!

I’m fairly new to pvp (approx 200 unranked games and 40 ranked games). I always queue by myself. I’m playing in emerald tier right now with a condi mesmer build (below). It’s not the all-wells bunker, but it’s pretty survivable. I feel like if I play it well, I can win basically any 1v1 (I have definitely lost 1v1 to more skillful players). I can hold out against two players for a while depending on how well they coordinate their attacks.

Given all that, my goal is to help my team as much as possible. So I usually start the match by telling my team in chat “I can start at home”. If nobody else wants to start at home, I can usually get there quickly and get it capped before enemies arrive (this depends a bit on the map).

From this point, my strategy looks like this:
- If I see incoming enemies, I call it out in team chat and try to hold out as long as I can
- If I don’t see anyone, I try to go to mid and support the team in the fight while retaining the ability to hopefully see anyone pushing toward home and get back to defend

Overall, this works okay. So, finally, here is my question – does this strategy make sense given my build, solo-queueing approach and level? What refinements that would make it better?

Thanks for any advice to help me improve!

Here’s the current build I use:

Well, I certainly don’t like letting other people down. But this is a game, and I really have to say that I am having a lot of fun playing in ranked. I just started the league matches this weekend, and I’m only in tier 2 of emerald, so there’s every possibility that I’ll reach a point where I’m a liability.

For the moment with me always playing solo, my teams are 18 wins out of 29 games since the league started (so just over 62%). Definitely I make lots of mistakes that would impact my team whether I played the well-bunker build or not, but it feels like in general I’m not holding the team back.

For reference, the build I’m playing is below. It is quite resilient and I often take and hold a point with it. But at the level I’m playing, I can also roam around and kick some other people off their points. Playing 1v1 against a diamondskin ele or a well-bunker chrono typically means a stalemate, but other fights I can win.

And, as Pyro points out, none of this actually matters in terms of taking a strategy of incremental tuning versus completely giving up and starting from scratch.

The reduction in block duration on the shield looks like an incremental change that will probably works out all right.

Seems like there are small changes possible that should work fine

Some way to build a legendary armor set (could be extremely long, but ideally would be cool if it could be done by roaming as well as zergs).

To make the armor specific to WvW, it has two special criteria:
- you only make progress towards it while playing for your server (edge of mists doesn’t count)
- you get one extra supply capacity per piece of legendary armor (so up to +6 more supply)

It would be cool to have a long-term goal like that to work towards

A slightly different perspective?

in PvP

Posted by: eldenbri.1059

eldenbri.1059

I see a lot of posts from people with lots of pvp experience posting here, so I thought I might share my experience because I think ArenaNet has to cater to some degree to players like me.

I never played any pvp before GW12. I started playing GW2 at the very end of 2012. It was several months before I tried WvW. That was my first experience against other players, and mostly I got killed. But I really liked it and spent many hours playing it and eventually got good at roaming.

After more than a year in WvW, I decided to try pvp. I really didn’t know how it worked, and I accidentally played a ranked match as my first match. I told my teammates, and basically they were very unhappy. I left pvp for more than a year.

I started playing a little bit of pvp mostly to test out some build ideas. I played in the stronghold betas and actually found them pretty fun. Eventually I realized that pvp was the best way to get Crucible of Eternity tokens and runes of the nightmare, so I cautiously went back into unranked pvp. Nobody yelled at me, and it was actually pretty fun.

And then I realized that, because borderland roaming in my tier of WvW right now is not very active, I was having more fun playing pvp than wvw. I had played over 180 unranked matches with a win rate just under 60% and had gotten myself to rank 35 and it still wasn’t until just last night that I thought I would go ahead and give the ranked matches a try.

We lost the first match, but it wasn’t a blowout. I can’t say exactly why we lost. I think the other team was better at getting numbers to where the fight was happening. But nobody complained or criticized on our team. I tried another ranked match, and we won a close game. I was really happy to get that one amber pip!

I still have a lot of work to do to improve (an old dude struggling with an 18-button mouse is not a thing of beauty), but I’m enjoying pvp and not as worried any more about letting my team down. Playing in amber (in my two-game sample) is putting me against people that seem to be around my level.

So my point in this long post is that, for me, GW2 pvp and the leagues have been a success. I’ve gone from a non-pvp’er to preferring this as my primary game mode right now. In no way am I trying to say that everything about balance and the way the pvp leagues are set up is great for everyone, but I thought it was only fair to share a perspective that was a little different than all the other threads.

I agree dire gear is the right equipment. I put a link to my current build below.

My experience in roaming with it is different than Embolism describes. The build works fine for soloing towers and fully upgraded camps, so it doesn’t feel unimportant to me in terms of what I can accomplish. And it’s durable enough to defeat an opponent while you’re taking a camp or tower.

My experience with keeping people engaged or preventing someone from just walking away is different as well. With a base 25% movement speed plus blink, I can usually keep up or close a gap on a runner. With the “Time Catches Up” trait, clones and illusions are bit like missiles in running down someone ahead of me. With staff auto and scepter 3, I have some range. And the key thing is that these attacks put on long lasting conditions, so the opponent stays in combat. When the range is close enough, the combination of chaos storm, tides of time, and gravity well will typically stop a runner from getting away.

All that said, I’m sure it’s not as high of skill as some other builds, and some people will find the combat very boring with all the blocking that this build uses.

Have fun!

One possible way to reward those players is to have a limited period of time at the launch of the update where the WvW-specific currencies that you can earn now can be spent for some nice items (kind of like the tournament tickets).

Just an idea to reward folks who are playing now

Why you main Mesmer out of all other class ?

Having played MMO’s for most of a couple of decades, the thing I find interesting about GW2 in terms of mechanics is the combat system. There’s so much more movement and ability to innovate on the fly compared to other games.

Mesmer is the profession that feels like it offers the greatest chance to really experience and enjoy that fluid and reactive kind of combat. It feels like a class that I can continually get better at playing. And when you play it well, you can really have a big impact.

Thx much for the help!

Definitely testing is key for me to decide what actually works best. I’m not as comfortable in pvp as I am roaming in WvW, so I tend to make more stupid mistakes. That tends to make it harder for me to get a good qualitative feel for what is actually working better. So I try to tap into the wisdom here a bit before I try a test.

For what it’s worth, I’m considering doing my next testing with the rabid amulet and using both earth and geomancy sigils on both weapon sets.

Thx again!

I’m curious to see if a long condi duration build is viable. The long duration has some interesting consequences like someone hitting you in a long fight and running away for almost two seconds because of the fear while they have a few torment stacks.

I suppose rabid is more practical, so I’ll probably just try that as my first step from settlers.

What sigils do people use primarily with condi builds and rabid? I was considering earth and blood.

Thx. I find that I’m so used to having the durability of Dire in wvw that I just don’t do well with really glassy pvp builds.

I suppose it’s a learn to play kind of thing, but I’m looking at Wanderer as a step away from my current Settlers amulet. So it’s pretty glassy on a relative scale… lol

I am experimenting with converting my WvW roamer build to something for pvp.

I’m currently looking at something like this, and I’m wondering if anyone else uses the Wanderer amulet for something similar. (I’m guessing there will never be Dire or Trailblazer amulets)

Also, I’ve seen a few posts where condition duration sounds like it isn’t that valuable in pvp. My own experiences in pvp (at lowly rank 30) and wvw, are that eventually the opponent runs out of cleanses and it’s great to be able to put on some long-lasting condis. I’m guessing that in pvp fights with multiple opponents, there are just so many cleanses that this doesn’t work? This build optimizes for long condi durations

Thx!

In the spirit of trying to be a little helpful despite the opening post being a bit over the top, here are a couple of fights of me fighting and losing playing my chrono vs another chrono in WvW duels.

https://youtu.be/18rGBjmdC0I

https://youtu.be/PJpSD_qw9X8

Hopefully this shows that neither of these chrono builds has anywhere near complete invulnerability and it gives you a sense of how different chrono builds play (granted, I make a ton of mistakes, but you can at least see what the different builds are trying to do).

While I think chrono is strong in 1v1 fights, if you’re going to be having those fights, my recommendation is to record a few fights so you can see what’s happening. Bandicam is free, and I learn a ton from going back and watching my mistakes.

Still loving Chronomancer

Just wanted to say thanks to Robert and Anet one more time for making the Chronomancer elite. I have fun every time I play it. I feel like there is still a lot I can learn and improve at, but it feels very capable for the kinds of content I play.

I also think it supports a lot of different play styles, so I can continue experimenting and theorycrafting.

Thanks again for the great work!

@krysard I’ve never really played much in the custom arenas. Can you tell if one of them is empty and just available to use? Thx!
