My guild hall has a tavern where you can get potions. One of these is a +10% WvW experience buff that lasts 24 hours.

- Does this apply only to me?

- Is there any cost I’m paying for this? (Can there be only one of these active?)

- Is there any reason not to use this buff if I’m mostly playing WvW?

Thx!

WvW/Group Fights

in Mesmer

eldenbri.1059

I think this depends a little on the types of groups and the role you want to play.

This is the build I use for a combination of solo roaming up to group fights that are maybe 10 versus 10.

http://gw2skills.net/editor/?vhQQNAr+fn0nBFqhNqBmpBEgiFnjquQT0G9MAGgEDtx2nEA-TFyCQBT4BAgsTAQBV/pe6FSkSQAcQAwz+DZR5XAAEgZWmRmBH9oH9oH9oNzZOzZOzZWIgFrBA-w

This has some pretty expensive equipment, so if you’re starting out you could consider exotic dire armor and weapons. Also you can use the consumables that are one step down.

In terms of supporting to help others in a group fight, your heal clears conditions and the phantasmal disenchanter does as well (disenchanter is kind of a tough skill to use – it has a long cast, and if there’s a lot of AoE he won’t live long enough to help much). Also, charging your mantra will heal people around you. The gravity well on a downed body will help to get it stomped or rezzed.

For me, one of the key things in a group fight is staying alive. So this build has a lot of personal condition clears and healing in addition to good toughness and vitality. If you’re getting focused, you can use either torch stealth or decoy to try to drop focus.

This is a 2v3 fight using this build to give you a little sense of what it’s like. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JsYn0SNQV3s

WvW fights took me a long time to learn since I started with just pve experience. But they can be a ton of fun. Good luck.

You don’t need to hit F5 again. The CS effect will end when the time runs out.

The amount of time you get depends on the number of illusions you have up when you use CS. I think it’s something like 1.5 seconds base plus 1 second per shattered illusion (or until the continuum rift is destroyed).

You can actually start casting a long cast before you do your CS shatter. As long as the cooldown hasn’t started, your skill will be off cooldown when CS ends.

You really want to practice using this skill to get a feel for it. I find I often do a CS shatter and immediately do an F4 shatter because I hate getting interrupted during my CS time.

Is there any reason while I’m roaming solo and grabbing camps and towers that I should NOT claim them under my guild’s tag? Is there a limited supply of claims or something? Is there any sort of social norm about not spreading your guild tag all around a borderland?

Cooldown thoughts

in Mesmer

Posted by: eldenbri.1059

eldenbri.1059

There are a few cooldowns on mesmer that don’t seem to make a lot of sense. It seems like these are easy places to target in balance tuning – they are small changes, and if you get them wrong, you can change them back easily.

It feels like just reducing the cooldown on some of these things would give people more incentive to try them and maybe get more variety in builds. Here’s the list of things that feel like they could be shaved.

Phantasmal mage (30 seconds) – only shield is 30 and it has a mechanic to get 2 uses (all others are 18 – 25 seconds base cooldown)
Chaos armor (staff 4 – 35 seconds) – as a personal-use only skill without a huge impact, it feels long
Arcane thievery (45 seconds) – it’s a long time for a chance at swapping that can fail
Mirror images (45 seconds) – it could be fun as an offensive/defensive choice, but the cooldown is so long I think it’s hard to justify taking a utility slot

I don’t know if the next balance change is already done, but it feels like a little trim on some of these times could be good and easy to do.

I did a couple quick tests. It looks like the sigil works like it’s supposed to but does not make entries in the combat log for either the damage or healing.

If you watch this video closely, there’s a 1083 heal and a 1042 damage floater that happen just at the moment of the interrupt (17 seconds in) and there are no corresponding entries in the combat log

I tried slotting it today since I figured maybe the rework had been done on sigil of leeching and scavenger rune had been a general fix.

On first glance, I’m not seeing entries in the combat log or floaters to suggest that it’s working. I have it slotted in an offhand weapon.

Something every Chrono should know

Thx very much for sharing this. Since I saw this post, I’ve been trying to get better at managing this.

I tend to make mistakes if I try to do too much at once, so the easiest thing for me to do is having a “fixed” rotation. Based on that, I think the best rotation is to always try to have a couple of illusions up before I start echo of memory (this means I have a few seconds in CS usually), always start CS during my echo of memory cast, and always cast Deja Vu (if available) as soon as Echo of Memory ends (and interrupt it with another skill).

That’s still quite a bit going on, but it seems like it’s the best general pattern for having Echo of Memory available after CS ends. I’m using a build where shield block is important, so I like being able to optimize around it.

Am I thinking about that correctly?

How to improve Shattered Strength

in Mesmer

Posted by: eldenbri.1059

eldenbri.1059

I always thought of shattered strength as the centerpiece of a possible hybrid damage build. Since scepter is basically my favorite weapon and it works well both in condi and power, I keep coming back to this trait to try to make something out of it.

But it never works. 1 stack of might for 10 seconds just doesn’t match up with what you lose from MtD. I like Ross’s 2 stack suggestion. The other possibility is to change the base duration of the might stacks to something like 15 seconds. Then if you really want to invest in hybrid, you can get aristocracy or strength runes and now you can probably maintain a reasonable number of stacks (assuming they aren’t stripped).

But I’m doubtful the 15-second duration would really help the pure power shatter. I wonder if it’s feasible to add a trait you could choose in inspiration that would increase the damage of the F2 shatter.

When chrono first got announced in the HoT preview, I actually tried to make this build. I didn’t quite understand how the shield block worked, so I gave up on it.

I haven’t been doing much pvp this season, but I have made a WvW roaming version of this build. The traits are all the same. With trailblazer armor and weapons plus signet of midnight and food, the condi duration is 70%. That makes the burning procs a lot more valuable. Here’s a bad fight where I’m testing it – the only interesting part is at the end. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FEpnXoTdAiE

Ross, I think the point about how it’s different than the meta build happens when the DH puts down his last trap. Now, shield becomes an offensive tool that lets me stack lots of burning for a big burst of damage. Of course, it’s very similar to meta, but that is a fun mechanic

The only other thing I’m trying that’s interesting is using Well of Precognition. Three applications of aegis means three more blocks. That’s a little more burning damage, but it’s also a way to extend the duration where you’re blocking even longer – which can be fun for frustrating people.

Thanks for the quick answers.

I guess I’ll need to get a feel for how for how the timing changes. It seems like these aren’t big enough changes for me to totally give up my current build, but they all make it a little worse.

From a psychological point of view, Anet would be best off in their next balance update to try to package together some benefits with some nerfs. Humans are very “loss averse”, so seeing only loses will always make people unhappy.

Phantasmal defender as a utility?

in Mesmer

Posted by: eldenbri.1059

eldenbri.1059

Yup – I use the shield phantasm.

The question is about slotting the phantasmal defender as a utility.

When you have the Persistence of Memory trait plus Chronophantasma trait, having the ability to cast the defender as a utility means lowering the cooldown on your shield phantasm, your other weapon set phantasm, and the Mental Defense trait by an additional 4 seconds. The phantasm itself can soak up around 8500 damage in pvp, so it can, in theory, help if you are dying from direct damage (which is my challenge with Carrion amulet).

On top of all that, with Persisting Images, you actually get a fair bit of damage from the retaliation (when you get hit, damage goes to the defender and it procs retal in addition to when the defender gets damage from being hit).

So the theoretical synergy is great. But the cast time is so brutally long that it’s really hard for me to use in pvp matches.

Just wondering if anyone has made it work…

Phantasmal defender as a utility?

Kind of like my question on phantasmal disenchanter, does anyone use phantasmal defender as a utility slot?

There are lots of builds that get a defender based on the inspiration grandmaster trait. Just curious if anyone also ever slots this.

Just like disenchanter, this would be so much nicer if the cast time were a little faster. I’m hoping the balance changes find a way to make some of these utilities more appealing.

I don’t have enough fights yet to really know how well the build I’m using will work.

I seem to lack the reflexes to survive a burst if I don’t have some toughness. So if I have to choose between toughness and vitality, I think I want toughness.

My samples are too small to know yet, but I feel like I’ve killed pretty much every class with this build. Some of the fights take a long time, and that’s a problem. Scrappers, eles and rangers for sure.

For sure, I’ve seen some games where people aren’t able to clear condis and this build performs better in total damage than I did with mercenary. My highest total condi damage with this build is 550K in a game. But the variety in the matchups in unranked is really high. In general, I’m doing a lot less direct damage and somewhat similar condi damage to before.

Couple of notes I didn’t put in the video:
- Disenchanter fails the first time on guardian because he blinds me just before the cast finishes
- I screwed up the shatter sequence in the 1v2 fight, so I ended up with all my shatters on cooldown.
- The cast of disenchanter that I point out taking forever is actually the fastest cast because I have quickness.
- Disenchanter fails again on guardian because he blocks the bolt. I really needed that condi clear…
- The other boon removal that’s happening is the clone from the sword block. It does boon removal if it lasts long enough.

in Mesmer

Posted by: eldenbri.1059

eldenbri.1059

Thx for the feedback. It feels like it should be such great synergy with build, but it’s a real challenge to use.

After trying it for a few fights, I feel like I can only use it in a couple of situations:
- Entering a fight as a +1 when I’m not the target (e.g. coming to mid after capping home)
- Later in a 1v1 fight if I force the opponent to disengage or I create some space

The problem with the first case is that I always want to shatter shortly after entering the fight, so I need to create enough time for at least the first cast or it really does nothing.

Taking just 0.25 off the cast time would probably be all I need. An alternative is to keep the painful cast time and make the projectile unblockable.

If I record some decent video of using it well, I’ll share it. (I have a lot of video of using it poorly… lol)

in Mesmer

Posted by: eldenbri.1059

eldenbri.1059

I’m playing a condi build. As Messiah posted in another thread, warriors can now have very long periods of resistance to condi damage. So I decided to try out using phantasmal disenchanter for the boon removal (and bonus extra condi removal).

The downsides:
- Cast time is painfully long (1.5 seconds base – I’m playing mainhand scepter only with malicious sorcery, so it’s closer to 1.25 seconds – still it’s very slow)
- It dies like other phantasms to AoE (I do have Persisting Images that gives 20% more health)
- If the initial target blocks, dodges, etc, the bolt seems to stop – so no bounces. In fact, if a warrior blocks, it gets reflected to hit me.
- It takes a utility slot which is darn valuable on a mesmer
- It doesn’t appear to record it’s results in the pvp statistics, so it’s hard to know how effective it is without recording video and watching each shot. (The boons removed and conditions removed stats don’t seem to show what disenchanter does)

The upsides:
- It shoots about once every 3 seconds.
- Each shot can bounce 4 times and remove 2 boons or 2 condi’s
- It does a little damage (around 230 per hit, and another 230 or so from retaliation with Persisting Images)
- It’s a phantasm, so it benefits from inspiration recharge reduction (20 seconds to 16), persistence of memory and chronophantasma.

Anyone trying to use this utility? I’m testing it with a couple of pvp matches per day, but there’s such varieties of skills in matches, it’s a bit tricky to kitten.

State of the Mes/Chrono

in Mesmer

Posted by: eldenbri.1059

eldenbri.1059

I think a condi shatter build with chrono, illusions and inspiration is good, and yet I’ve had some pvp fights lately where there’s plenty of challenge. There’s every possibility that I’m just playing against people much better than I am. Noobie players die fast to this build (especially in wvw…)

I did a little experimenting during the last couple of weeks to see if I could find some variation since I don’t like playing the same thing as everyone else. I tried to make a “true hybrid” build work where I took shattered strength instead of maim the disillusioned and tried various amulets and runes. But the lost condi damage is too much.

I still keep trying small tweaks (I’m playing double mainhand scepter with sword and shield as offhands). Lately, I’ve been trying to fit illusionary disenchanter into the mix.

So I think in pvp, the core of the condi shatter build is strong. There’s some room for experimentation, but it feels like the traits are pretty much locked.

Thx for another cool video. Have you gone tried out dual scepter mainhand since the changes? I’ve stuck with it the whole time (since season 1), but I don’t see many people using it.

I used to play with arcane thievery a couple years ago when roaming in WvW. But I found that I failed at casting it a lot of times. It has such a long cooldown. Have you considered phantasmal disenchanter instead? It has a long cast time, but you get more shatters from it.

As a mesmer player, I think it’s fine if CS doesn’t affect elite cooldown.

It would be nice to get a couple little buffs when this change happens (maybe shorten the cooldowns on a few rarely-used utilities?)

In general, it would be awesome if the balance changes always included a mix of a couple nerfs to overpowered skills and a couple buffs to rarely used skills for every profession. It would lead to more build experimenting.

I don’t mind the elite specs being generally more powerful. Anet needs to make money somehow, and the price of HoT is really not that high.

I enjoyed this season more than season one.
- Nobody expected that I had to play a specific build (playing non-bunker mesmer last season, I stopped at ruby because of that)
- I took my time and played only a few games per day. I started late and made it to mid-diamond.
- The first levels (amber, emerald, sapphire) were mostly blowouts but at ruby and diamond I got good games about as often as blowouts
- The individual fights were more interesting
- There was little to no rage in the games I played. A couple people quit when it was clear that a team was going to lose. But I liked the general friendliness of map chat
- I’ve kept playing a couple of ranked games per day at the end here just for fun. I know I won’t make legend (and probably shouldn’t make legend) – the matchups are just usually fun

Roamer - gonna miss desert bl

in WvW

Posted by: eldenbri.1059

eldenbri.1059

I hope it stays in the rotation going forward.

When HoT started, the clear issue with desert bl was low population (at least playing from NSP). This would have happened to alpine as well – everyone was doing elite specs and trying HoT content.

Currently, the desert bl tends to have some decent roaming fights, typically plenty of camps and towers to take, and pretty easily competed dailies – all by just going to an enemy bl and moving along the south edge of the map.

The scenery is nice, you can knock down a tower wall pretty quickly with a cata, and if you get into a lord fight in an enemy tower that’s a 2v2 you can get some pretty fun combat (there’s enough space to fight, and the lord attacks are meaningful sometimes).

Anyway, I hope that desert bl comes back frequently. I have fond memories of roaming on alpine, but I’ll really miss desert if we don’t see it again.

- What actually goes into your MMR rating? Is it only ranked matches? Is it all time or limited to a recent time? Is it all the professions you play on that account?

- If MMR roughly correlates to lifetime win rate in ranked matches, what is a “good” win rate? I would guess that people who play a really high number of matches tend to end up around 50% – 60% win rate – is that right?

- Noob mechanic question… How do I switch to a different profession in a match? Do I just go to the logout screen and pick a new character?

Hackers Capping Towers

in WvW

Posted by: eldenbri.1059

eldenbri.1059

Wow – this is crazy. I play as a roamer on NSP. I was on a borderland just taking camps, when I see we took a tower, then another tower, then a keep. I’m thinking, “Wow – we must have quite a force out.” So I start building a cata to take a tower. I come back with supply and see swords on the tower. So I run around to see if it’s being attacked from other side. We cap the tower by the time I get to the other side. No seige in site.

I decide to switch maps. I see one of our towers just got taken. I go to ambush the attackers figuring it might be only two or three. Nobody comes out. I see a dot at our sentry by south camp. Run over and there’s a HoD guy there. I attack him, and he does nothing for a couple seconds. Then he just disappears. I see swords on our other tower. Go running over there. Nobody inside, no walls or gates down, no siege.

This is not fun.

Now that I’ve been playing in ruby for the last couple of weeks, most of the fights seem close. A lot of the matches are within 100 points, and I’ve only had a couple of times with 3-game win streaks.

That was just a touch disappointing as I had talked myself into the idea that diamond would be easy. But if I look at the actual matches, they are pretty fun. And I might still make diamond if I can win just a couple more games in a row…

For me, playing up through ruby, nobody has seemed unhappy that I was on the team as a mesmer, I’ve been able to play whatever mesmer build I want (after the bunker nerfs), and I’ve been able to have fun and be effective in both 1v1 and team fights. That seems pretty good in the grand scheme of things.

I’m playing a condi shatter build that is a little different than most (it’s one of Messiah’s variants). I always use gravity well instead of moa, and I only bring portal when I’m playing with my son because he has a slow necro.

Whether mesmer is “meta” or not doesn’t really matter to me. Hopefully there are builds and roles that a mesmer can fill at my level of pvp going forward because it’s been fun to get to this point.

With malicious sorcery, the scepter block is available typically every 5 to 6 seconds (with a little alacrity). It’s clearly not the same defense as sword 2, but it’s nice and the 5 stacks of torment can really hurt an opponent. When you mix in sword block and shield blocks, you get a lot of total defense and they also support your offense.

It’s definitely up close fighting most of the time, but it feels survivable enough for the level I play.

There could be WvW badges that are like the pvp badges during the seasons. The pvp badges give you some indication of the player (don’t do ranked pvp, only do a little, probably pretty good, etc).

It seems like WvW could have badges as well. Perhaps it only makes sense during a season? It doesn’t seem like it needs to be as complex as the pvp system. Maybe it’s just a little tower with a rank in it. The ranks require more points each level you go up, so the people with really high ranks have earned a lot of points in that season.

You earn points when you score points for your team. Maybe a simple formula for points earning is number of points earned for that action divided by number of participants. So if you solo kill another player, that’s 1 point. If you take a camp solo, that’s 5 points. If you capture a tower in a group of ten people, that’s 1 point each. Maybe there’s bonus points for being tagged up and leading a group since that’s an important behavior.

It would let you know at a glance the players who had contributed a lot to your server.

As a WvW player, would you want this?

Sorry if this has already been brought up – have fun!

Season 2 experience - the slow roll

In season 1, I played to ruby and then stopped since it wasn’t fun any more.

In season 2, I got started late. I think I have never played more than two games in any one day. Most days, I play one game. I have probably more days that I haven’t played at all than played, so I’m confident the average is less than one game per day.

The result through mid-sapphire is a steady stream of easy matches. I think that’s how it’s supposed to work, but just thought it’s worth sharing the data point.

In sapphire, it can take four minutes + to get a match even if I try right at server reset. I’m not sure if that’s expected – it’s gotten slower over the last couple of weeks.

Not sure if anyone has tried this start-late and go-slow strategy, but it’s been low stress. Just a data point for Anet on how season 2 matchmaking is working
