I honestly don’t mind the gem store. I’d rather just buy what I wanted from the gem store as opposed to playing the RNG crapola merry go round from the mystic forge or black lions chests. As others have said Anet has to continue to make money from their game and the gem store is a good way to do that other than expansions.

I’d rather buy an expansion.

If the gem store and “Flaming never-ending gathering tools” and “Uber awesome finishing moves!!” are the future as opposed to an actual expansion I won’t be here to much longer.

What people tend to forget is the expectation that players had after GW1. Expansions every 2-3 years.

See, I know exactly how the previous leveling system felt for a complete stranger to MMOs, because I WAS a complete stranger to MMOs when I got GW2. Combat system was nothing like what I knew before, I had no idea what certain things are for and where I should go anyway.
Was I confused at some points? Of course! Did I die a lot? Hell I did! Did the hungry bunnies beat the crap out of me? You wouldn’t believe! And all of this felt great.
Since then I tried other MMOs too and every time I was forced to go through long, boring toutorial first I was just too annoyed to continue. I was like, that’s not how you treat a player. Let me discover it on my own! I want to see all the options immediately and decide how fast, in what way and what order to get familiar with them. I don’t need anyone to spoonfeed me.
And look, now GW2 is just the same.

Thats my core disagreement.

GW had a really great and industry renowned point of difference from the rest of the market, and now they are attempting to conform…in hindsight and retrospect to what every other MMO is doing.

I play this type of game on a main.

I’m casual by definition, lucky if I get 5-10 hours a week to play this game but that was never an issue in GW1. It held relevance.

This is a great game for altoholics. Most of the people I talk to have no issue with the game, and they have 10+ lvl 80’s and 2-5 legendaries.

Personalizing such things, while cute, ignores a larger relevance and impact.

Personally I think hand-holding at the expense of initial in-game freedom to be a huge loss in regards to what was one of GW’s biggest selling points. Not only that but gaming at large should put gamers first, the people that buy and play games a lot…not people that have never played such games before at the expense of those that have imo. Not in this day and age at least.10 years ago and I would agree.

Cater to yes, dictate the leveling experience? Not so much.

There is also another aspect which is the community. I have played a few games which were not initially welcoming to a new player in mechanics and dogma but it was the community that taught me the ins and outs of the world in question and the mechanics involved.

That to me is the definition of a good MMO. Not the NPE.

What I mean is a tough game tends to breed a welcoming and helpful community. A dumbed down game tends to breed impatience and rudeness.

In regards to the thread title “So what is this company’s focus?”, worthy of re-stating as many have tangented, I like many am unsure.

I’m assuming the China release has really kept them busy. The recent LS and “content” patch has really gone down like a wet fart for many, with I think justified reasons as personally re-rolling has kept me playing far outside the content either the LS or patches have brought to the game.By in large it’s pretty insubstantial.

In saying that’s just me and there are thousands of players grinding Dry Top who seemingly love it.

I guess only Anet knows the focus and future but I’m seriously hopeful an expansion is being worked on and kept under wraps. If LS and the gemstore is the future of GW in regards to content…after 2 years….I’m out in regards to anything other than casual play and certainly won’t commit the time on it as I did to GW1.

It’s your expectations at fault here my friend.

What I have a problem with is that most people who complain simply complain with no real reason. What he claims to be a massive uproar is similar to his complaints, without a reason or cause.

It is true that saying something just so Anet will hear it is sometimes important, but not when it’s unfounded and simply because “they want to revert the system”.

Those kinds of remarks actually make it seem like the necessity to revert is not that high as people simply cry out for what they are familiar with rather than what is wrong with the current system. If you keep claiming that there is something obviously wrong, but fail to ever state that point, then I am just gonna assume you are trying to delay answering the question until people just agree with you in hopes of not looking like an idiot in your eyes. Ever read “The Emperor’s New Clothes”? Because whenever someone doesn’t say something they claim to be obvious, then I will assume they are trying for a tactic similar to the weavers in that story.

Your just creating argument for the sake of it. People should be free to come here, or any forum of such nature, and express their personal opinion on a thread topic without someone suddenly challenging and miss-interpreting their opinion as fact or reasoning for unjustified rebuttal and/or argument, from what I can gather, merely because you personally have a different view of things.

There is also another cliched saying…why state the obvious?

Entitled to your opinion, yes. Does it make a good argument just stating your opinion? No.

Also, that was not a rebuttal but rather a request for elaboration as you’re points are all over the place. There have been changes, yes. However, I don’t see how they can make the game stale or are a means to “conform” to other MMO’s. The fact that you’re not saying anything but simply “this is bad” and “it ruins the game for me” and “it is gonna be the downfall of this game” means you have little to no proof to back it up.

Back up what? My opinion and observation? Thats redundant rebuttal. I was purely and obviously stating my opinion. If you wish to twist that into some form of debate that’s your call.

“Prove it or ur wrong!!!” is the bane of gaming forums and ending of most forum debates and expression. Prove your right. If you can’t see the obvious and over-whelming disapproval from the forum community in regards to the trait change (maybe two threads above this one) and NPE (pretty much every second thread in general since it was released) in conjunction with the obvious and counter-intuitive similarities the NPE leveling system has with other MMO leveling as compared to the GW2 leveling system at initial release well…ok….thx…bye

Creating retro-active leveling shackles is just such obvious fail. It should have been this way at release…or not at all. Screw the new players, it’s a 2 year old game, cater to the player and player base that has played since day one and continues too. It’s not like a million new players are going to turn up and suddenly think GW2 is the bees knees because of the NPE.

I can’t believe they didn’t get a clue after the over-whelming complaint after the trait system change. GW has a reputation for being an MMO you can have fun in quickly and easily, max level faster than other MMO’s and access skills and build freedom faster than other MMO’s. Gamers recognise Anet and GW for being that type of game.

Instead of embracing such a differential and marketable point of difference in comparison to the rest of the market they are just slowly making changes to conform to the same stale formulae of every other MMORPG.

Grind for the right to swing a rusty spoon.

I’m sorry, but could you elaborate your points better rather than jump from one point to the next without so much as a reason or connection? The trait system is not the major part of what makes GW2 so different, at least not from my point of view. As for level gating, aside from weapon skills (which you unlock quite fast as levels 1 to 15 are easy to get) and a few account-wide unlocks, there’s not much gated behind levels.

Speaking in general terms and sounding angry does not make a good argument. In what way has GW2 “conformed” to other MMO’s?

No.

I’m perfectly entitled to my opinion without having to delve into semantics as justification. Your rebuttal is far from sound argument. The changes are blatantly obvious.

I’m getting by on my alts. learning new classes and mapping. Having fun with it but it’s not usually the way I play this type of game that’s for sure. I usually stick to a main with maybe one other “main” alt but outside re-rolling my only other option in this game is to grind out mats and gear or repeat content, not really a fan of either. PvP got stale a few months after release and hasn’t changed enough for me to merit anything but the occasional excursion back.

WvW is really the only part of the game I haven’t exhausted.

Regardless of all that 2 years after release I’m hearing more and more that people are just getting bored and LS isn’t cutting the mustard or sating such appetites. There is a great foundation here but Anet really needs to sort out this content issue.

Gamers are fickle and will move on. Divinity and re-visiting Unreal 2004 (holy crap…still pretty active) is giving me far more enjoyment than GW2 atm.

Here’s an example of where your “veterans” argument is confused: When the NPE hit, what were the majority of complaints about? Most of the veterans who were complaining were upset because now when they go to level alts, they will get a “dumbed down”/altered experience. They weren’t upset because new players will have an easier time leveling, that’s for sure; some of them were upset that new players may have a less fun time leveling, due to the altered experience, but they actually weren’t bothered about the kind of thing you’re referring to.

In fact, I bet that if a change like this happened, most veterans complaints would be about “me, the veteran” not being able to do map completion the “hard way” anymore. You’re confused about what aspect of those changes even bother people significantly in the first place.

Sorry, that analogy makes no sense and seems way out of context.

As stated previously I have no issue with a “split”. One title for WvW, one for PvE and a third for attaining both entailing the relevant reward. I do however take exception to those wanting the same reward for less effort.

I’m not confused in regards to the aspects bothering players. This and other threads on the topic show a clear consensus. Not sure why your so adamant on attempting to tell me what I really mean or why I’m confused? I’ve clearly stated my opinion on the matter.

I still say your there and get a chance to get it or too bad too sad you missed out. Me included. I’ll more than likely miss the whole festival due to work so will miss out this time too.

I mean legendaries are pretty much defined by the community as “omfg takes forever!!!” and yet every second character is running around with one. Same with pretty much every “rare” item in the game. It’s a 90’s rave gone wrong.

Surely something can remain sacred and untouched from being garnered by the masses. It’s one of the few items I see and take the time to admire, specifically due to it’s uniqueness. Why cheapen that?

Gw2 Expansion [Disscussion]

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: fireflyry.7023

fireflyry.7023

I must say your post sounds very selfish and close-minded. Those are simply your opinion that you somehow consider a fact. I am a former GW1 player and I will disagree with your points completely. Though I am a “veteran player” if you consider the time factor, I would still consider myself a casual player based on the play-style as well.

Your expectations are not for what the game is but rather for how long it can keep you entertained. They’ve said that there wouldn’t be boxed expansions for GW2 when they released it and yet you still had expectations that it would. That is what I call delusional, believing something will go your way despite being told it won’t.

Ok..news flash…the vast majority of gaming forum posts are opinion. It’s a bunch of gaming dorks like me debating gaming semantics the majority couldn’t care less about. I never stated anything as fact. Your making assumption up as rebuttal. Either that of you just miss-interpreted me.

Secondly I couldn’t care less what has been stated in the past. If your a GW1 “vet” I don’t need to tell you how many times Anet has done a 180 on “official” statements in regards to a multitude of facets to their games, especially in regards to GW1. Most would agree that nobody here really knows what the heck they are up to most of the time, we are all guessing.

I will state that for me, repetition of content does not equate to new content and yes, repetition of content no matter if it’s dressed differently does not entertain me.

You claimed that your passion for the game came in huge part to expansions in GW1 (which were campaigns as stand-alone games really, there was only one expansion and that was Eye of the North), but all that tells me is that your passion isn’t about how different or wonderful the game is but rather that it gave a lot of content to play with. If that’s all you’re after, you’re better off playing multiple games rather than expecting one game company to crank out tons of content to keep you pleased. The longevity of GW1 wasn’t due to the added campaigns I would argue, but rather its uniqueness and deviant from the standards of what an MMO was back then, but you either failed to see that or conveniently left it out of your statement..

I did neither, your just attempting to justify rebuttal by making assumptions and miss-interpretations of my post.

In saying, and to counter, your saying GW1 would have been a success regardless of any additional releases. Just Prophecies….of course your not…get my jist?

I also don’t think in the current market asking for substantial new content in an MMO 2 years after release is the lofty, unrealistic or irelevant expectation in regard to player satisfaction you make it out to be, especially when given the franchises history. I agree our opinions may differ but I disagree with my take on that being a personal fault.

As for how the LS is, that is also a matter of opinion. I have said it before, and I will say it again, it is a far better option design-wise to implement this sort of LS content rather than a boxed expansion to go with their model of a living world. If your idea of content is simply “new races, new classes, new weapons, new skills, new maps, new dungeons, new pvp modes” then you’re missing out on a lot I have to say. The races and classes they have now are fine; adding any more may be more harmful to the game than you would think. The new maps and dungeons bit, we got a new map that kept extending as the LS progressed, who knows they may just release a new dungeon as well.

I agree it is opinion. 2-3 sessions of new content does not compare to a full expansion. Read the thread. I’m not alone on this, unless 10 hours or so of a linear story every few months pacifies you. Your being content in this regard does not negate complaint or critique from others who find the new content lacking.

Gw2 Expansion [Disscussion]

I know the Living World updates have added a couple of new maps, a story, and many new skins. But two years of this doesn’t compare to what we expect an expansion would have added.

This.

For right or wrong I expected more, after 2 years. Maybe it’s a false expectation or my personal bias as a GW1 player at fault but…..a handful of hours content most nailed in two sittings at most….with a side of grinding out a backpiece in recycled content and mat grinding as a “reward” hardly constitutes substantial or rewarding content for me personally.

In this regard the LS is a huge fail. Drip-feeding content is not the way to go thus far, I’d rather nothing for a year and then a serious dose of awesome….but it’s already been 2 years. If this is a test bed and we get a massive hit of content in 3-6 months all good but I’m not holding my breath.

I love the franchise but boredom is quickly setting in.I’m having more fun and surpises in terms of content playing Skyrim for the upteenth time. Sheesh.

The only time I felt investment was when I played with others who cared more and who I cared about. They personalized it. GW1’s story and delivery was vastly superior, imo.

Maybe that is something ArenaNet either are in denial about or don’t want to face, maybe they honestly have to take stock and realize they make one smashing earth shattering PvE world(s) which they do so excessively well that no one wants to leave PvE to play PvP or they have attracted player that are only interested in PvE.

If they made VR goggles good enough I’d superglue them to my face and just wake up to Guild Wars every day.

In my honest opinion it dates back to GW1 and GvG. The game slowly but surely slid towards PvE. I don’t blame Anet or hold that against them…it makes good business sense. PvErs grinding equates to a better business model overall….and your right…they make great PvE and have created a great world here but it’s full of braindead mobs.

Look at the world boss loop…a bunch of players spamming 1-3 range skills till chest then mapping to the next boss. That’s GW2?

I guess I’m jaded, I bought the collectors edition of Nightfall. After the goodness of Factions I was stoked to hear that they were going to release NF as a mainly PvE content expansion as they also announced, in the DVD included with the CE, the next release would be focused on PvP.

Then EotN dropped. The biggest grindfest I’d had the displeasure of playing .PvP was totally neglected and died. So I waited for GW2…and then that released which PvP wise is basically one format AB, one of the least favored formats of PvP in GW1.

How people take it seriously or tourny it baffles me. It’s fun for sure but compare it to GvG in GW1.

This game is screaming for GvG or at least some form of variation in PvP.

MMORPG’s should always have an aspect, be it story or in-game mechanics, that involves and entails effort on the part of the player to discover. It add’s to the depth and reward of the game as a whole.

Just my opinion mind you, but I hate MMORPG’s that play like a “For Dummies” handbook whereby they explain every aspect from day one…or twenty for that matter.

Fact is your being lazy and you want the game to explain everything to you. Learning for yourself, forums like this, or even better off vets/guildies/friends, is VASTLY more rewarding. Pretty sure Anet intentionally designed it that way.

The only real feature I miss is from CoH whereby you right-clicked on a player and had the option to read their personal bio or “story”. It was self-written, from memory you only got a short paragraph, but it was such great fun to read and it really added to the humor but more importantly individuality of each player.

Some were witty, some serious but all were in the context of expressing individuality as opposed to the cookie-cutter format of GW2. It was such a simple feature but it was a great aspect of the game and imo these type of games should be about self-expression.

Would be cool to see it, but dreams are free.

Gw2 Expansion [Disscussion]

If it was a GW2 expansion I’d pay $120…hands down.

I know for a FACT I’d get value for money when compared to other games or subscription models. I just don’t get this LS thing. Crap rewards, content done in a few hours at most, same talky head to talky head cut-scenes that we have seen since day one with a few exceptions. Tiny zones with a mechanic based purely on people repeating the same content quickly, repetitively and most importantly consistently to get “Tier” rewards or discounts.

Repetition of insubstantial content.

I can’t get attached, it’s just bad in-game writing and delivery imo.

In saying I prefer games where you create your own story and character (CoH anyone?) and have done so here. GW1 was cool and I’m sure those invested into GW2’s plot probably think I’m illiterate, lazy or slightly kittened and while I am all three according to my doctor my opinion still stands.

The only time I cared about the plot in this game was when my guildies passion for the story overwhelmed my sense of not caring, which I admit was highly enjoyable. Outside that I just clicked on the “skip” button as soon as I could find it.

I agree to disagree.

This game has many faults, and many awesome features but if LS is the future it will die a slow death.

I have money and I desperately want to spend it on this game. I don’t want to spend it at the gemstore on minis or gathering items. Expansion please.kthxbye :P

It doesn’t directly or individually effect me. I already have it. That does not equate to me agreeing to said reward being cheapened and yes…that bothers me as it effects the game as a whole, outside either your or my opinion or your or my game experience. It’s an MMO, such things have larger relevance…stop attempting to personalize it.

It’s a big fluffy kitten. Once you start retro-actively changing the reward structure in an MMO it effects the whole game and kittens on the very foundations of why most play such games…time investment for reward.

Cheapen that and most cry wolf, for valid reasons.

You just admitted that it bothers you, so I don’t know why you’re saying it doesn’t affect you…

Anyway what exactly is this “larger relevance” that it would have? What, specifically, would be affected?

Saying it would “kitten on the foundation of why most play such games” sounds incredibly personal; like you and others would be bothered by the idea of someone getting the same reward for less work.

Which is barely an argument, if that’s what you’re saying. You’re more or less saying, “It shouldn’t be done because some people would be mad.”

As an individual I could not care less, commenting on how that effects the game as a whole is totally different. Hardly rocket science or merit for rebuttal.

Outside that games like this have core foundations and mechanics based on time investment for reward which have been in place since two cave-men started playing rock/paper/scissors…or Ultima. Basic economics either via coin or time, both valid currency in any MMO, are a core foundation of any online game.If you retro-actively alter or cheapen a reward players have invested timesink towards you are really kittening on your player base.

Mapping used to be a chore/challenge/effort/timesink. Now you just follow the arrow in easymode akin to how this whole game is going, and people want a legendary component for it.

Get real, or do you want this game to die faster?

Gw2 Expansion [Disscussion]

This over-analysis is BS imo.

It worked in GW1, it will work here, and on a tangent many like me expected this to be the format. $60 for a years fun, heck yeah GW2 players will pay that. I’d pay a lot more. I was a passionate GW1 player for 8 years, due in not large but huge part to the expansions. It ended up releasing my fav class, Sin ftw, and was so instrumental to the longevity and success of the franchise.

Anyone who disagrees is not a former GW1 player.

The excitement, speculation and gratification in both the PvE and PvP realms was what separated this game from the other games on the market.Sure no sub but we all couldn’t wait to hand over our coin for the expansion.

I’d class myself a casual player in GW2, played 6 months PvP on release pretty fiercely but that got way boring way quick, then got sucked into PvE mostly thanks to my guild and have had a blast but…..it’s stale. No I don’t have ascended gear or any legendary weapons, I don’t have the time or inclination for such things….which is why I used to play GW.

Now that’s all it seems to be about. 2 friggin years later. Either grind out gear, re-roll, or play a stale one format PvP. I guess my biggest question is are my expectations at fault?

In conclusion I do know one thing, the LS is a poor excuse for new content and if that is a substitution for an actual expansion I won’t be playing this game for too much longer and I would hate to see the game go that way.

GW2 needs a PvP kick in the buttocks.

Screw PvE and the issues there. GW1 was initially PvP focused. Yes that changed with the expansions…slowly but surely it was clear PvE grind greatly outweighed PvP for not only updates but attention and player retention. GWAMM was the biggest con ever.

…and yet GW1 will always be remembered for me and many others for it’s outstanding PvP model, mechanics and variation.

GW2 is a one trick ride…..without GvG.The true meta.

I only take issue with people that burn trough the PvE content and usually end up complaining about PvE end-game, more so lack of it.

It’s Guild Wars, if you came here expecting uber end-game you are indeed playing the wrong game. It’s hands down a re-roller. In saying I expect expansions, not this LS crap atm.

In saying I fully agree in regards to PvP. “GW2 is not the game for you” has no justification there imo. They just released a kitten crap PvP system based on AB, one of the least popular forms of PvP in GW1 and expected it to garner praise. The fact they are able to get die-hards to take part in tournaments is amazing.

Guild Wars….without any actual Guild Wars.

I personally don’t care if they change it, but it would be nice if WvW exclusive players could get an equivalent reward without trudging through PvE. There really isn’t a big deal to do map completion and it certainly isn’t legendary to just buy it outright.

If you don’t care why even post? Then you go on to state map completion isn’t a big deal and one can just buy it. So that totally negates the issue at hand? Seriously? Why even bother posting on the topic if you care so little and choose to be so flippant.

So wait…. People want World Completion without exploring the whole world?
(I still say PvP should be included but I can see why they’ve excluded it too…)
People want a “Legendary” weapon to become even less legendary by further decreasing the requirements to make one? It already requires nothing but a pathetic timesink instead of mastering game/profession mechanics and skills.

Well, since we’re in the discussion of decreasing requirements to attain a “Legendary” weapon, I vote that we should receive one Legendary of our choice upon completion of every Daily Achievement.

The normal requirements in place are boring and do not cater to my every whim. “Having to do so just is not fun. I play the game to have fun, not because I want a second job for which I do not get paid. I know there are many other players that feel the same way I do.”

qft.

GW2 is screaming for an expansion. Period. As a GW1 veteran I feel my expectations are justified in this respect. The game needs a major shake up. A new class or two, a new map, new skills, etc, etc. It’s been 2 years…and….

I thought the LS was filler. If that is seriously what Anet defines as new content they are delusional.

It should go both ways. WvW players should earn an equivalent item for legendary crafting that doesn’t involve PvE (maybe world XP) and the PvE players can get by without WvW for map completion. I really don’t think it would be all that tough for them to make that happen.

No.

Titles and such for sure but there should never be a change in regard to legendary crafting. It’s legendary for a reason, because people went through the hassle to get it. If others can’’t be bothered or find it a hassle to kitten bad.

GW has always been about reaching max lvl relatively early and never having to worry about it after the fact. I agree with the content issues but if you want staggered leveling theres a few hundred MMO’s that do that already. It’s common knowledge GW is not one of those.

Again I transmute complaint for the fact people are playing the wrong game.

Ehhh?

I directly stated it was a timesink in my post.

I missed that part, my bad.

As for you weird tangent into personalizing my comments with some sort of obsession…well yeah…pass. Outside that it has no effect on me as an individual. It cheapens the reward. Period.

Want it, go get it. Or do you want a legendary with it as well?

How can it have no effect on you and cheapen the reward. If it has no effect on you, you wouldn’t care whether or not the reward is ever cheapened.

I just want you to be honest about this. You clearly are bothered individually by the idea of people getting the reward for less investment.

It doesn’t directly or individually effect me. I already have it. That does not equate to me agreeing to said reward being cheapened and yes…that bothers me as it effects the game as a whole, outside either your or my opinion or your or my game experience. It’s Guild Wars.

Are people that seriously kittened enough to complain about lack of “end-game” in this franchise. GW is not an “end-game” MMORPG. There are like a gazzillion other MMORPG’s that do that. Go play one.
