FX is dead, has been since Haswell’s release. Single threaded, Haswell just KILLS the FX, Multi threading its faster per clock over all. See the attached Screenshot for Multicore.

A dual core CPU is not a bad way to go if you are budget restrained. I would take a G3258 as my dual core choice though with plans to push it to 4.6ghz at a min. A direct upgrade would be a 4690K, 4790K, 5675C, or 5775C depending on budget and need, before you change sockets for skylake. So there are options there.

As for the GPU, GW2 is not a very demanding game. a GTX750Ti would be just fine for high settings at 1080P as long as you have the CPU to back it. And its not display resolution that matters, its the texture resolution. So the higher quality textures you push the faster GPU you need.

IMHO anything above a GTX970, or a R9 290/390 is wasted for GW2 in mind. Only buy faster cards if you are playing newer AAA titles such as Witcher 3.

I cannot tell if that build comes with that Keyboard+Mouse+LCD screen or if its just a Tower…

But if its just the tower – That PC is not worth $733 bucks. Not with AMD and certainly not with a FX4350

However THIS -> http://pcpartpicker.com/user/sirsquishy/saved/#view=gtbzK8 Is worth $618.34

Is it easy to build a pc myself? i wouldnt know how to put those parts on it.

The hardest part is deciding how to do cable management on your system. But the building part is as easy as playing with Legos. Tons of help videos on Youtube.

The only thing I am going to hold Anet up for is the ‘anti Holy-Trinity’ approach since day 1 of GW2. Cause THAT is what makes me enjoy this game the most.

All of the other failed promises are just that, failed PR marketing that in the end those PR sponsors had no control over the road map that GW2 would take over its current 3 year journey.

The fact is, you do not need to grind, prepare, and plan hours and hours and hours before your ‘actually’ paying the game. Most of the ‘high end’ content can be done before level 80 and in ‘level appropriate’ Greens. (Ill Cite Tequatl for this one, level 66)

You can just jump in, hit up LFG and be off in any number of available instances for your level with in 1-3 mins of login. No planning/prep work there

You can watch your clock on your Phone and log in 20-15mins before a BIG world boss (Namely Teq) take up whatever role you want (Zerg, Defense, Turrent) and then have your small % at a free easy Acended weapon drop. Minimal Planning there. Same with the boss train, just gotta have rain meter or some 3rd party timer so you know ‘whats up’.

..countless other options as well. None of them require any serious investment to ‘progress’ to the goal.

The only real exception is FoTM level 20+ IMHO. 1-10 can be done with baseline Exotic gear and/or proper Rares with the correct Runes/sigils. FoM 11-20 requires exotics IMHO, and 20+ requires 10AR (EASILY obtainable BY the time your at FOTM 15)

GW2 is the KING of casual for MMOs.

Knockback PSA.

When a player moves a mob for positioning, that Mob needs a debuff against Knockback for 3-5 seconds. When I play my guard and I use binding blade to drag the mobs in on my symbol so that we can mass AOE 2-3 Elites, 2 Vets and a horrible normal Mob (Grub…You know where I am talking about here), Knockback needs to be stopped.

So add in protections to players abilities from other players who are too stupid to NOT knockback.

WinAuth is garbage and false positives as malware on AVG, Avira, BitDefender, and Kapersky. I suggest NOT using it until WinAuth gets their CRAP together to fix this.

Instead I suggest downloading either Bluestacks, or Andy, and install the Android platform Authenticator in there instead. This does the same as WinAuth, but it wont be broken by the AV Engines that flag it as an infection.

I think the problem might be the ssd. First make sure the ssd is running at AHCI.

Also, most recent Kingston V300 have been proved to be kittenty ssd with speeds even lower than normal hdd.

I suggest you to do a speed test to know the speeds. If they’re unreasonable low and it’s running at AHCI, the only solution would be to throw that ssd to the rubbish and buy one with one with a reputable brand like Samsung or Crucial.

Awe man, I didnt even notice he had a V300.

Your 100% right about the V300. It’s garbage of an SSD. Not only did Kingston swap out the Gate NAND controller between the PR review and manufacturing, they also did some Caching magic that makes the SSD ‘seem’ faster then it really is, mainly to make up for the Controller Swap in hopes that no one noticed.

The issue is that the Gate controller cannot do garbage collection + TRIM commands WHILE you are performing I/O operations to the SSD. The controller is not fast enough.

OP – I suggest trashing the V300 and buying a 850Evo, or ARC100. Seriously.

Kingston is a fail of a company in my books now, even with RAM.

Working alternative to AMD R9 270 video card

ikereid.4637

Hey Everyone,
So I keep getting atimagsys crashes, the most recent one being video_tdr_failure. But unfortunately have had other types of crashes with this card. It’s a brand new computer and the card doesn’t fail unless I am playing gw2. I have researched forums and although there are many possible solutions nothing seems to work.
Here are the specs.
i7 4760
16gb ddr3 ram
2 tb hd
amd radeon r9 270 2gb
win 8.1

So long and short what GPUs have you had success with that have more stable drivers or have worked with gw2?
Thanks!

A 270 is a 7870/7850. its also a under clocked 270×. Its also now a 370/370x, once again. Its one of the oldest running cards that has been re-branded to date under the GCN 1.0 core.

I suggest looking at a GCN 1.1, 1.2 based cards (anything that’s a 300 series, that’s NOT a 370/x, and either a260x, 285, 290, 290x, or Fury/FuryX).

For Nvidia my only 2 recommendations are a 980 and 980ti. I cannot recommend a GTX970 due to how Nvidia decided to partition the ram on that card.

To not have a dagger skin due to ‘mesmer’ being the target of ALL of those skins…yet having an Axe…yea that makes all the sense :-)

This is because your CPU is a dual core i7. GW2 does not allow for the ‘high settings’ profile to be enabled on dual core CPUs anymore since High res character models cannot be selected unless you have a quad core CPU.

It should still be selectable since it’s a dual core with HT (unless I’m mistaken) so GW2 recognizes it as a quad core. I had no issues checking the box with my i3, which is also a dual core.

No, that doesn’t work anymore. I have a couple i3’s that run GW2 and that is the case for both of them.

Any suggestions/ideas why that is?

Thanks

That is why.

But just follow my above post and you’ll be happy with the game.

Your laptop should be able to handle the game on medium to high-medium settings at 1080p.

The only settings that need to be adjusted from that are as follows;

FXAA – None
Reflections – Sky/Terrain only
Shadows – Medium or High
Character Model Limit – Medium or Low
Uncheck High res textures
Uncheck high res Character models

And then your laptop should be able to handle the game just fine.

This is why FX series sucks for GW2. Even a G3258 Clocked at 4.8ghz beats an FX8350 for single threaded performance. And Single threaded performance is what matters for this game.

my 3570k @4,6 was dying at mid-high settings @1080p as soon as i went with 5820k and all that jazz i can play plain ultra settings @1440p without worrying about spikes and dips. I only play WvW if that makes any difference. So unless you are going with X99 i wouldnt recommend you because overall it will make too much of a difference you would be better off waiting the next gen intel series and see what difference it makes in terms of performance.

what GPU did you have with the 3570K and what GPU do you have with the 5820K?

okay guys, im a hardware enthusiast, but gw2 seems to be crapping on me every now and then.

My current spec is:
Corsair h240
Intel i5 4670k@3.8ghz (minor OC)
EVGA GTX 980 SSC @ stock
AVEXIR core 2113mhz
Kingston Hyper X 3k SSD w/windows 7(soon to be 10) and GW2
1tb hdd
500gb hdd
100gb 2.5 hdd

Im debating getting an i7 4790k/4770k -

Would i see any performance increases?
Im not too sure if GW2 will actually improve or if the increase in single threaded performance will be noticeable -

Thoughts/opinions?

The 4790k stock is at 4.0ghz with a 4.4ghz turbo setting. That alone will make the game faster. But you know what? You can clock the 4670K to that high and get similar performance. Try 4.6ghz@1.25v and see if you can get it stable. Just make sure your RAM is running at 1600mhz.

The Hyper threading accounts for 10% performance on average, and that really depends on core leveling and core utilization. The higher the utilization the lower effectiveness of HT.

So will getting the i7 give you more performance over the i5? yes, but it also depends on what YOU define as more.

Is 10%~ worth the investment to you?

My PCs’ In-Game Performance Hasn’t Suffered To The Point Where I Become Frustrated And Log Out But I Have Noticed A Few Lag Spikes (I Assume Due To Testing). My Only Gripe Is Zoning Between Lands … I’m Waiting Two Or Three Times The Amount Of Time To Zone Into Where I Want To Go. It’s Not A Game Breaker But An Inconvenience (That Shouldn’t Be Happening With My Gaming PC).

That would be your hard drive. I suggest fragmenting your disk to start with, maybe investing in an SSD to throw the game on if that doesnt improve enough for you.

Now using :Toshiba 3.5in 500GB SATA 6.0Gb/s Internal Hard Drive DT01ACA050, 7200RPM, 32MB Cache

The SSD I plan to use only for: Winows 25 Gb, Gw2 30 GB + HoT , Soft 20 gb +-

Get a 250g Version if your going to be running other things on it too. But yes, the SSD is going to be light years faster then your 500GB spinning rust.

Out of the group of these ICMP replies only the last one is good. The other 3 are very bad for an upstream device. Ideally it should even be less then 35ms, but depending on how badly over loaded that device is this could be normal for your ISP. However 100ms+ responses are not normal.

That is what your ISP needs to be notified about.

tracert xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx

the GW2 client is connected to more than just one server. (netstat -b or Resource Monitor)

you’ll have to monitor them all and also few foreign ones (like google.com) in order to sort out who’s fault it may be.

Nope, thats not entirely correct. You only need the current server IP you are connected to. via the /ip command.

An i3-4160 would probably be a better buy than the G3258 for GW2, hyper threading would make a nice boost.

A few links I found out:

http://www.anandtech.com/show/8232/overclockable-pentium-anniversary-edition-review-the-intel-pentium-g3258-ae

Hyper Threading doesnt work too well with GW2 on a dual core CPU. Higher clocked cores will trump HT for this game. You will see the effect more so around Zerg like content.

IMHO, G3258 is above all i3’s, then you jump into an i5 once that G3258 no long is adequate for you.

SSDs have changed over the last 2 years with Samsung’s vNAND being in the lead for consumer MLC based SSDs. They are surviving Write cycle tests to PB (that’s 30TB+).

There are 2 tricks to making SSD’s live longer.

1. over provision for your needed space by 45%. If you need 60GB on disk buy an SSD that meets or exceeds 45% above that required on Disk space.

2. Do not fully partition the SSD, reduce the partition by 15% for side loaded SSD Tasks. This includes TRIM operations, Garbage collection, and Sector reallocation events.

Also, The more free space your SSD has the longer it will live as that’s unwritten area of the disk that can be used for remapping when NAND burns out.

This happens quite a lot actually. And its usually due to memory corruption. For me 90% of the time a reboot fixes it. I have noticed it happening more on dynamic textures then anything else though (Effects such as Twilight/Sunrise).

Hell once It happened against Teq’s Foot. If I got with in 800range of the foot then the entire screen would turned gray-blueish with simple models bleeding through, step back to 1000-1200range and it was a normal day, move back to 800~range then gray-blue screen again.

Its really hit and miss and has happened across every driver from AMD since 12.4 across 6-7 different Cards.

Laptops power off only when thermal limits are hit. That means your CPU/GPU heatsinks are probably clogged with dirt/dust/hair and its also possible your Thermal paste dried up.

Prime95 is a CPU Stress test. It will push your CPU harder then any normal application (games included). If your Laptop shuts off during Prime95 tests then you know its a thermal protection fault issue. Means you need to tear your laptop apart to clean it.

GW2 will push the CPU pretty hard as well. You can watch system temps with a program called CoreTemp for your CPU and the Sensor Tab on GPU-Z for your GPU (use the drop down to select the GT630).

See attached for an example of a Clogged Laptop heatsink.

What CPU did you have before ? You just said you upgraded ypir GPU.

Btw. do you still have the old GPU ? If so just try how it works with your new CPU.

My old graphics-card was broken, which is why i bought a new one in the first place. However, I also had to get a new mainboard and CPU, because I was told that the GTX760 wouldn’t work well with the one I had – so what I did was to pretty much exchange everything but the HDD and the DVD-drive and sell the old stuff that still worked.

The CPU I had before was an i5 2.3GHz if I remember right.

Chance are you either had a first gen i5 (2.5ghz~) or a low power First gen or 2nd Gen i5. Those are the ones that are clocked under 3ghz.

Either way, that CPU would be better then the AMD Cpu you now have.

Might be worth it to investigate the cost of the MB replacement for the i5 on ebay/Amazon and go that route.

What anet needs to do to ‘fix’ WvW is combine Green, Red, and Blue servers based on Tier to fill WvW out more. Just like EoTM, but instead Tier based.

I stopped playing WvW on my BL cause there just isnt enough ppl to compete in Blob wars. Instead Ill run EoTM now, which is almost as rewarding and at the same time less stressful. This is the direction WvW needs to take.

I’d prefer LESS blob wars. They are fun from time to time, but capturing things is meaningless when 5 minutes later a blob from another guild comes in and takes it right back, only for the 3rd server to do the same 5 minutes later…

I’d like the population spread out more evenly.

Problem with blob wars, is it works. People generally take the path of least resistance. So there is no combating blob wars unless we put a limit on how many players from X team can get credit for Y capture…ect.

Personally I think WvW is broken and has been since the start of the game. And community? What community? You have 1-3 commanders that think they ‘own’ the BL map(s) and if you dont wanna play along with them your just a troll working against the ‘great blob’. there is no community, never has been.

Man… and there I just “upgraded” everything like 3-4 months ago ._.

The APU is holding you back due to the weak per clock performance of AMD. Your best bet is to look into buying a 1150 socket motherboard and a G3258 and plan on clocking it to 4ghz(stock cooling can handle this).

http://techreport.com/review/26735/overclocking-intel-pentium-g3258-anniversary-edition-processor/3

it just beats the pants of AMD for single threaded performance, and that is what affects GW2 the most.

640 X4 is going to hold you back with anything that is considered a current GPU. My suggestion is to get a GTX750 and call it done. the 750 is low power and will let you properly max out that 640 X4 with minimal investment.

Best npe would be bringing the old 2012 gw2 back, i miss it so bad, this new way of leveling is majestically boring and just not worth it, im glad i already have my maxed out lvl 80’s cause i just wouldn’t bother doing it now. Leveling has become a drag and even though wvw has been removed from world completion its become boring as sin, the heart quests have been nerfed to death and simplified so bad that even babies would get bored of them… All in all, go back to the old way that actually made this mmo different and fun because right now its just a daily login and out app.

Agree 100%.

This is why I stock up on Leveling scrolls. The NPE in its current form is TRASH. And i see complaints about it all the time when I am in a starter zone crafting. ALL.THE.TIME.

The new trait unlock is OK to a point, but its not very linear. A new player might unlock 2 hits on each trait/skill line to find that their skills have no synergy with them. Its not intuitive at all. Only old players, or players that take the TIME to read each skill and the forums will really use this new system properly before they unlock everything.

GW2 is just not GW2 anymore.

I don’t know why I am bothering to post in a 35-page-thread when what I’ve said has likely been mentioned but here goes:

World of Warcraft’s latest expansion Warlods of Draenor is 49.99 for just the expansion, and nothing else. For 69.99 you can get a bunch of fluff. If you are an entirely new player, you need to pay another 19.99 to buy the original ELEVEN-YEAR-OLD game, and then continue to pay 14.99 a month.

What are we complaining about again?

People are never happy. WoW is not a good compare since its a subscription game that is dying off (IMHO). But with the 49.99 expansion for WoW you do get a instant level 90 item for a new character. IMHO that would equate to a new character slot for GW2 (which we are all getting now).

really, no reason to really continue this thread. The price is what it is, we are all now getting the free character slot for the Rev. No reason to be unhappy about that.

As Ubuntu-user i can say that Gw2 runs with Wine/PlayOnLinux. The huge problem is that you can only use single-core….sadly your other core are ignored from system. So you must set your graphics on ,,low" for fair FPS of ~40 outside from city. Inside is <30 fps.
If many player are around on you and use skills (ex. world boss), then your fps dropp dramatically!

The more power has one single-core, the better performance in gw2!

Going to Linux is a wise choice IMHO. Windows has lost is flare and with the announcement of the Subscription based windows on the next major release, Everyone should consider it just to show MS we are tired of their BS.

I suggest Linux Mint and Ubuntu LTS for beginners. Cedega/Wine are what is needed to run DX and .Net apps under Linux/Unix, and often require serious tweaking to get it working well, let along at all sometimes.

But its a learning experience that will serve you well moving forward.

Ah, thanx. I am mainly a pve/pvp, hardly try out wxw. I usually run my PC VERY clear, and free of interwebs softs/ads. I’ve running pretty decent on my actual set, but with most of settings at medium/low. I was just hinking if the i7+gtx550 would be a big improvment.

I really don’t understand what you mean by overkill x), you mean that it is much more than what it really needs?

Thankxs for the tips also!

What he means is, the game is SOOO dependant on single core IPC that anything above a GTX560 is held back by the games engine at normal resolutions (IE, 1080p).
The GTX970 will not really ‘shine’ unless you are pushing 1440p+ resolutions on high settings. The i7-4790 is the best part of the upgrade IMHO as it has a high single core IPC compared to your i5. And yes, HT will give you more FPS, its really more effective in places like WvW and Zerg content. I see a 25~ FPS difference between an i5 and i7 clock vs clock (4790K vs 4670K) using the same GPU.

yes but annoying none the less. I always felt this was stupid. Curtain should pulse like the Guards staff #3 skill. If you can stand on the symbol and get stacked swiftness why cant you run through curtains line and have the same effect?

That doesn’t make sense, though. The purpose of the curtain was to give a speed boost for people who ran through it, like Veil.
I’m relatively certain that the point of limiting it to people who do not yet have swiftness, was to prevent people from gaining excessive amounts.

The only fix, IMO, is to make it so that, on run-through, you gain a swiftness stack which caps your TOTAL swiftness to ~12 seconds (*modified by boon duration) , which is the base amount one would get if they ran through without swiftness (IIRC).

That could work too. The point of my idea was to not have a completely worthless skill if you happen to be running the boon signet and get swiftness 1 second before you run through curtain, making the curtain cooldown completely wasted.

Right now its just poor mechanics and it needs to be addressed.
