we can talk about expectations though…
i believe it will be the same as it is now on “Join Solo” button. so mainly fotm-builds (like necro and spiritranger) and ‘balanced’ with some bunkers here and there.

let’s split 500 people playing into 3 quess.
Looks good.

Anet can always remove hotjoin completely. This way, half of the userbase won’t be split due to a mindless glory farming zerg system disguised as pvp.

So you want daily-pve-achivment-doers quee to normal tournaments – afk half match or leave when they done with daily? Another great idea! I am in!

imo its not the hotjoin itself, its how hotjoin teaches players to play what crashes pvp.
they need to remove the 8v8 format from the free servers.
and as far as it is ok to get glory points as far it is not okay to get the same amount of rank points in hotjoin – no matter if loosing or winning (probably the biggest flaw).
running hotjoin-zerg gives about 200-400+ points vs a ranked match – e.g. close bunkering without real issues – gives about 50-100 + additional 200 only if you win.
thats just ridiculous. even making good points in a ranked match + winning will give you about the same amount as you would get in hotjoin.

a reporting system / dishonor points would help to handle people leave/afk.

and there definitely is a need for an unranked queue – hotjoin will never be a replacement for that, no matter how it will be changed.

Pax Finals - SYNC vs TC!

Grats to Sync! I only caught the finals when it was 2-1 but boy it must really suck for A.L to lose from that position. Good win though totally deserved.

On another note, I think the finals peaked at just under 2k view when I was watching. For a game that has sold over 3 million and is considered one of the most popular current mmo’s, this is quite frankly sad. I was hoping something along the lines of 10,000 views and 5,000 minimum would be nice.

Was no marketing done at all for this event? I hope the grand finals do attract the most viewers GW2 PVP has seen or else – despite all the balance and new game modes – this game will just remain about as niche as it gets.

sadly i fell asleep during the break after 2-1 for AL – was almost 3a.m.. i will rewatch it today though – really looking forward to some good matches.

i dont know if the marketing needed was done, i was really surprised about the few viewers. in eu-finals there were almost 4k.
i think thats sad for the NA scene – i really feel sorry for you.

We’re currently working on some minimap changes that will help with the zoom levels and readability. I agree that more hard-coded actions should be bindable.

are you also considering changes to the size of the minimap?
as i know on low resolution and biggest layout size it is almost screen-filled, though it would be nice for people using higher res
also crucial change would be a fixed pan

or maybe use the existing. by holding shift you can ping and draw on the minimap – what about adding a simple overlay somewhere in the middle of the screen by holding shift and it will have certain commands to communicate with your team

Will Team Queue Get a New Leaderboard?

further than that, who will count as a member of the team?
will you only have to represent the team at the time queueing to count for them or will you have to be a team member for a certain time?

if representing is enough, teams will just temporarily form guilds to be at the top of the leaderboards, found new smurf-guilds to bash lowranks and so forth…

so, too many problems would come along with implementing of so called ‘team queue leaderboard’

he is asking for a team-leaderboard.

to answer on topic: i think it wont happen for now, maybe in the future. but the problem would be that they had to implement a new queue for 5-player-teams only which means another splitted queue.

would be like this:
- ranked soloQ (no 2/3/4/5 setups allowed)
- ranked 5p-teamQ (no 1/2/3/4 setups allowed)
- unranked whatever (1/2/3/4/5 players) teamQ

now regarding what the dev’s mentioned before, i think they are aware of ‘under-population’ of the leaderboards and therefore i guess only big pvp population will bring us another split/different queue

You can turn off the option to gain rank points in your arena.

But to sustain a CA is expensive, and if you don’t add time for 2 weeks they delete your item that costed you 1.6k gems. Cute, isn’t it? And this is not mentioned when you buy it.

customisation is nothing about gaining rank points, nor is this discussion about the costs of a custom arena. i know how it works and under certain circumstances (like tournament training/scrimmage matches) i feel the price is ok.

i want to keep this thread clean, so please no discussion but about the mentioned customisation options

hello jolly fellows!

as custom arenas were anounced, i had some things in mind how they will look like. sadly nothing found its way into the custom arenas so i started thinking about what they should have for me to buy one.
after playing a lot of matches in different arenas i totally miss the versatility and there are so many things that come to mind for a tremendous custom arena experience. i would like to discuss with you the possibilities and it would be nice if some of the developers tell their opinion. i just dont want it to get lost in the archive of the forums, because i think those are really great ideas and things to add.
i really thought a lot about it and there are 3 big points and a minor one.

Individual capture points and mobs: turn on/off whole points and mobs (turned off will let the point appear without capture circle or the mob wont spawn). or in one SotG they talked about a third mob in forest, located at the cemetary which was taken out for some resons i dont know anymore. What about letting people to decide to turn them on/off.

Individual areas: possibility to turn on/off certain areas of the map. e.g. with the map forest of niflhel : divided areas will be ‚beach‘, ‚cemetary‘, ‚henge‘, ‚mine‘, ‚keep‘, ‚backpath henge‘ and ‚backpath mine‘. So if i decide to turn off the areas ‚beach‘, ‚cemetary‘ and ‚keep‘ i suddenly would have a new playstyle where direct crossing of the map to the enemy base isnt possible anymore and players will have to walk the backpath to reach the enemy players/point. i think this offers the most versatility

Queuing: lets say i want to make a 1v1 arena and it gets very popular. So there are 2 people playing and 18 waiting for the match to end. As it is now, you have to spam klick join random at the beginning and the lucky one gets the place. Here it may always be the same person. Now queueing comes to mind – a simple way of it. First click gives first place in queue and so on. You stay in queue as long as you observe, leaving the arena kicks you from queue

Individual point system: possibility to turn on/off any point givers in game (kill/treb shot/point cap/point def/ point nut/ mob kill/ guildlord kill/etc) but those would be minor priority.

I know there are reasons why certain things wont appear on tournament maps, but imo there is no reason to do so in custom arenas.
there may be some things that are simply not possible, but thats the discussion for

i think this may also improve shoutcasting experience because map overview is essentially and to be able to resize the map to an appropriate size and fixing the pan would help a lot.

Isn’t the mini-map re-sizable enough?

it is… a bit…
but not enough to see the entire map at once on a acceptable zoom level.

and still there is no possibility to fix the map so that it wont pan anymore

i still think the main problem is that you cant fix the map to have a decent overview of whats happening.

recently it felt like even pinging got harder, it often just doesnt ping when im shift-clicking

hi folks,

i was just wondering if there are some changes to minimaps. i havent already read about it but regarding to the coming soloQ it’s time to bring up this request again.

especially for the communication, for map pinging and signaling in any way possible to tell your team whats going on without wasting time by typing. sadly the common practice nowadays is just people saying nothing and ignoring the chat completely. i really hope this will change with upcoming soloQ but to teach the community to communicate the possibility to do so is needed.

like having all 3 cap points on top of the map. by clicking one cap-symbol you get a dropdown menu with predefined commands (e.g. enemy incoming / on my way to that point / need backup here)

and with the changes (if so) will it be possible to finally fix the map at a certain point (no longer following your char) in addition to give us a wider possible placement for the minimap?
like you see in my attachment there is soooooo much available space to make the map bigger, but no possibility to do so. this is already maxed out.

it would be nice to get a answer if there are some implementations likewise to the suggested above.

what does the community think would be an improvement for your gaming experience?

Hi guys, i wanted to ask something about the solo Q.
I play with another single person only the most of the time, so we are 2, i assume that to be able to play together we still need to wait for the normal arena as we are doing right now (the one that will became a pre group one) since solo q must be to apply alone. So, the question is, there will be a possibility of get a full group anyway in the “pre made” queue? What we need to do to play together as usual? Will you allow 2/3/4 persons groups to queue in that kind of tourneys, or you need a 5 person group to apply?

as far as i understood: solo is solo (no need for explanation) and everything else is premade. so you will be able to join the premadeQ/teamQ with your 1-4 friends. if alone soloQ will be your decision.

Still on vacation so I can’t go into too much detail but the PvP team has a blog coming with details before the patch hits. That should explain exactly how solo arena works. How it impacts team arenas, as well as other smaller stuff that impacts this part of the game, but wasn’t big enough to be listed in the overall marketing piece.

from game experience there were very few changes and as it looks im doing the same things after patch as i do now. i still have to play on a map for several days in a row and will still get more reward for hot-zerging.

Your defining ‘reward’ as rank. Not all share that opinion.

me neither.
personally i know rank is just ‘invested time’ but since there is no other reward in game rank is the only reward we have.
i could invent my own reward and talk about that, but we have to discuss on what is given. theorycrafting wont work here.
leaderboard split is really nice, dont get me wrong on that, and i do much appreciate it.
still the game lacks rewards which is incentive to play and im sure even you will agree on that.
yes, leaderboard is now (lets expect it at least) a acceptable reward, but still it is not ingame

im kind of upset

talking about big changes all the time and keeping player calm by saying “soon” – the only thing we get for pvp is the ranking split which could have be done in first hand?

is there something missing in the pre-release notes?
are we getting penalty system for soloQ?
are there any other improvements in communication during match or a pvp-friendly UI customisation?
or things like you mentioned earlier as “already on the way” like the decay in leaderboards?

why are you doing this to us?

pls no more soon. just tell if thats the only pvp change this patch or there is more.

really need to know this and if its worth putting more time and afford into this game or if i should take a break

Before asking for exp scrolls or whatever for glory remove hotjoin already…or the actual zerg glory farming-fest is going to be even worse…farmers belong to pve, time to kik them out of pvp once and for all…pvp rewards belong to those who actually play good not just everyone zerging like an idiot ganking random stuff around..

why is it an problem for people like you mr Archaon when other people have fun with something you dont like?

sry but not people having fun in hotjoin is a problem in this game – it is people thinking like you

because hotjoin was meant to teach new pvp players how to play before going in tpvp but totally failed @ this since there’s nothing about team work, tactic or whatever in hotjoin, it’s just a 24/7 unskilled zerg giving a kitten bout cap, backup, defending and everything else related to teamplay. And letting ppl farm glory and honour while playing like brainless chickens is definately stupid already…giving aven more rewards for doing that would be just nonsense. Exp scrolls and stuff are fine…but you should deserve them, free cookies for hotjoin heroes are going to ruin good pvp even more..

this is so true and tbh needed to be addressed months ago.
it should be that a rank 10 is able to play in a ranked match, but by getting rank10 in hotjoin you dont learn a single usefull thing for ranked matches.
so the actual hotjoin zergfest is – as stated – absolut cancer for the pvp scene.
its not about glory nor is it about the custom arenas – but being put by default on zergfest ist just wrong in case of l2p pvp.
so this needs a fix before talking about something to do with glory.

im really wondering what happened to the effect which made asuras double-model on stability??
i liked it a lot because i think it looked awesome. like on throw elixir S or on rampage.

did you do that due to players who complained about suddenly being easy spotted? because i think it was a fault decision.

sorry to ask: what is smartcasting?

Its a setting that affects ground targeted abilities. Whenever you use a ground targeted skill (EX: Grenade, Frozen Ground) instead of seeing the green circle before pressing again to activate it, the ability activates right away on the position that your mouse cursor is at.

oh ok, i know that one. but its called “fast cast ground targeting” and not smartcasting…

Hello beloved!

i dont know wether if this is a known bug or not, searching the forums for “Obsidian Sanctum” didnt get any results.

so i was trying to do the jumping puzzle in WvW (Obsidian Sanctum) on eternal battlegrounds. i joined, got to the waypoint (in JP) and as i jumped off i started fighting the players already waiting for me. after lets say 15 seconds the game crashed.
i relogged, went to EB, ran to the JP, got in and after 5 seconds of jumping off starting point the same crash.
i did the same a third time, and again it crashed.

i sent the bug report which popped up every time, but dont know if thats enough.

if you want/need some more information i would be happy to serve you just tell me how

Watching the tournament

GW2 has to compete with MOBAs and I’ve watched MOBA streams of games I haven’t even played and sat at the edge of my seat , OMFG-beaming at all the clutch plays scattered across the battlefield… the difference between that and GW2 is just outrageous. In GW2 the casters seem lucky to even notice a single ‘OMFG’ play in an entire match…

oh yeah, i watched a lot of MOBAs recently because there are so many players like you stating the fantastic side of how fascinating it is to watch on stream.
so i found my self every other day watching MOBAs for 15mins and suddenly snoring away into my dreamland.
i say to myself: “concentrate!! watch it!! if they say, there has to be some truth in it!!” and i go on watching people doing last hits on minions, [aaahhhh….]and snoring away again.

on the otherhand, yesterday was an amazing to watch tournament. even my cousin who is not a single bit into gw2 has enjoyed watching this tourney and was amazed especially about the 5 last matches

…but… just my 2 cents…

i experienced this as i did much soloQ and some teamQ over the last 2 months

it happened that i got past 90% a couple of times. im stating the 90% because i experienced this as a threshold. as long as i was above the 90% lets say everything went fine – win some, loose some. as soon as i passed the threshold by loosing some more i got in a kind of vicious circle. there i get often really bad players who were double to triple capping, doing really weird stuff like never fought on or for points and so forth which kept me loosing and dropping really fast far beyond 90%. at one time i dropped to about 47 or 48%. as you can imagine, fighting back up from there is a real pain. Not mainly because of the bad playing nor because of facing full premades, but mostly because of players either not joining or leaving midway or doing nothing at all during the match.
i can handle a loose if at least everyone is trying his/her best. but thats obviously not the case. even if its a rank 1 player – why should i blame him for double capping, come on… how could he know better?

the real problem is that those players just squeak through this system without penalty.
i even dont blame those people directly, because lets say someone who has no clue (a rank 1 maybe) what he does by just doing nothing or leaving the match to his “teammates”? why would such person ever care if they just dont know?

TL;DR: there has to be a penalty system side by side with a reporting system – not the already existing one, but one exclusively for pvp
i really hope that those get implemented very soon – at least by the time soloQ is getting a “real” soloQ

Getting Hotjoin Pts efficiently

in case of learn to play / teach new players how to play correctly / etc, etc, hotjoin is just a pain in the kitten and i have no clue why it still exists.

i know that a lot of people are playing it and so it counts as popular, sure it may be fun for some players.
just for the sake of the beloved game and its healthy population remove hotjoin as stated so many times by so many players for so many good reasons.

they’re not asking to skip it because they don’t like it, they’re asking so that they can practice for the big tournament (not everyone has a custom arena, or you can’t always find other teams willing to scrim, etc..)

This is good, really good, communication with the devs is a very good thing to the community, this will make people stop guessing things that they dont known, this will make us know what are the devs thinking of the game or the things that are happening, another good thing is that now we know that they are reading suggestions or the things that we post in the forums, i really hope this dont end and all of a sudden the forums go dead with no devs posting anything.

Also is good that they participate in things like the SOTG show, but i think the forum communication is more global, so not only a few players are listened and make changes based only on a few players.

And for the community, i hope you remain respectfull in the conversation with the devs, im not a fanboy and im pretty sure they can make mistakes, and they did, but if we want this communication to continue then we need to behave, seriously i have seen some teasing post to the devs when they are talking to them that i can see why they are not always posting in the forums.

i always thought that simply adding a movement debuff in stealth would do the job. like no port/blink and no more speedbuffs available while in stealth.

you still can escape using shortbow and evades, you still can use blink in stealth its just like an attack and you get unstealthed.

like the orb mechanic on spirit watch, not that slow but you get what i am talking about.

It’s not one of the maps in the upcoming tournament and I would much prefer to have Temple skipped from the 2-team tournament rotation and move straight on to forest for the next 4 days?

…And as a side note, to be sure, I tried it out in hotjoin on the (magnificent) skyhammer map. It seemed to just interrupt and drop enemies at their position a lot, rather than dragging them to me. Magnet has always been wonky when there is a height difference in play, but it seems to have been worsened now.
Might be a perception thing because of the change, but that’s what it feels like.

Any news on using Magnet drop enemy on their position rather than to me? It is happening a lot to me and it is very frustrating. Also, if the terrain is uneven, it will be either out of sight or drop enemy at their position. It makes things harder to do the combo.Bug or working as intended?

the only issue on hight difference i faced was that the opponent was pulled to me but then suddenly catapulted up in the air – was funny to watch :P but not that annoying and didnt appeared very often.
now, with the recent changes – besides i dont get why you changed it, because it was far from op with animation and casttime – there are some issues.
i saw an enemy get knocked down, but not pulled to me. another time the enemy was pulled to a location some meters besides me.
one time i pulled, he got interrupted and knocked but not pulled – i thought not again – ran to his location and suddenly he was where i casted the pull.

the issues mainly appear at locations with slightly different height

I’m not saying it’s useless now, but it was a powerful tool that has lost (too) much of it power as it stands now.

Tab targetting

Please fix tab targetting so it prioritises players and not net turrets, flesh golems or sun spirits…..

Particularly with all the crap people have then some tiny asura in the middle of it.

but maybe as an option (like “exclude pet targeting” checkbox) because there might be people who want to target those things – i just dont know why, but there might…

Smurf Accounts

so many people are complaining about the uselessness of the ladder. funny fact that most of those are playing on smurf accounts to not lose their rating they get with their/a team.
if ladder is useless, why care about rating?

another fact is that this behavior (smurfing) completely destroys a good working mmr, because they are competing in a ladder-tier at which they don’t belong to (in case of wrong account-rating according to skill).

must be a lot of fun destroying people as a high-ranked with smurf-account… faced the same problem on gw1 gvg ladder – always wanted to report them and wish them a ban – never did happen

ladder decay should be working already, but obviously its not.
rank6 on EU has last played 3 weeks ago – and the ladder is full of such samples.

as i see it, this is only a problem for now (regarding to promises) – because ladder split with a proper decay and a punishing system for leavers would iron so many things out – cant wait to see it implemented

my feedback:

- i think the sidenodes (A and C) are a little too small (the capture ring)
- the clock-like capture progress on ground of the capture points is absolutely amazing and should be transported to the other maps immediately
- the damage area of skyhammer is a bit too big (position play should still be rewardable)
- the amount of damage of skyhammer should slightly be adjusted (decreased) – i think it shouldnt be possible to one-shot people
- the advantage of controlling skyhammer is a bit too high imo. not because of above listed, its because in addition to control you get a tremendous advantage in map overview and are able to exactly tell who is going where

so long…

PS: stop complaining about tournament rotation. remember: we do not have a tournament (its a “ranked match”) and as far as it is a single match there is no rotation.
and i dont think there is much luck. you know about the mechanics, the possible knockbacks and your ways to counter it. i think its just a different way of skilled gameplay – and a hell lot of fun – to watch and to play it!!

hotjoin itself needs to stay. its just the format that forces zergplay that needs to go.
because people need a format where they can hop in whenever they feel so to just play free (or maybe test something). but the way hotjoin is now is just incredible. you can always tell whom of your party (soloQ) plays hotjoins most of the time, they never run alone and they (almost) always fight of point.
the perfect solution would be a hotjoin similar to the gw1 random arena. i know everyone is sick of those melancholic complains, but it describes best.
- join and leave only on beginning/end
- map rotation
- winner gets popup to next round / leave

Most importantly, the maps for WvW provide several settings that result in interesting play styles that simply aren’t possible with the sPvP maps.There’s even a site set up so that guilds can set up their own GvG matches in WvW and track their rating at gw2gvg.com.

10v10 is zerg vs zerg? GW1 GvG was 8v8. You can agree on whatever size you want when you contact the guilds you want a GvG with. But you’re right, guardians and elementalists running around in a tiny circle spamming heals is much closer to GvG.

watched some of the streams lately, and even if there is only a 2 player difference per team, as long as there aren’t some “roles” as you had in your gw1-team-setup everybody is just buttonmashing and aoe spamming and thats what i call a zerg. not a mass of players, but at least a bunch of doing some brainless buttonmash.

ELO ladders reach ELR faster if the starting ELO is close to the average elo of the system. If you’re bad you’re going to lose while you approach your ELR, if you’re good, you’re going to win while you approach your ELR. These relationships breakdown near the top and bottom of the ladders.

If you start at a default ‘0’ rating, the only thing that happens is that if you’re under the average, your rating will not adjust to create fairer teams as you lose. Ie, if your effective ladder level is -500 and you start at 0, and cannot go under 0 because the ladder is ‘positive’ only, then you’re effectivly masking a 500 deficit and putting your team down. What’s more, because 0 will, over time disproportionately aggregate people with unquantifiable negative skill values, games will be both low-value in terms of learning how to play, but also very unpredictable in terms of matchmaking. 5 people legitimately at 0 vs 5 people at -500 represented as 0 does not a fun game make.

This is why nearly every ladder which has some kind of linear progression system (0-> x) is actually just masking some kind of elo system. In many moba games you’ll notice that linear progression systems are implemented in tandem with your matchmaking rank. League has levels and # of wins, infinite crisis has levels, DotA 2 has levels, etc. Even leagues which appear to have linear ranking systems like ICCUP don’t work that way; the gradual point inflation which occurs over the course of a season is due to the deficit of points created by D- rank accounts which stop playing.

Linear progression means nothing wrt matchmaking and is generally used as a tool to increase player retention by giving them the illusion of progress as they play, even if they get stomped on their way to hitting their ELR. In GW2, this is supposed to be granted via glory, chests, and rank-up bonuses, but those aren’t working well.

Put simply, if you are worse than the average player who joins pvp for the first time, matchmaking is doing its job in making you lose.

its ok to have a rank whick is time-depending, but tbh not if its the only rank in pvp. pvp players have a indicator for time invested, but no indicator for their awesomeness (skill)

just add another rank based on tournament wins. one win = plus one rankpoint – simple as that and already ingame. this would be at least more meaningfull than actual rank.
sad but true, there would be so many ways to do better than actual ranking

There is no solution until the pvp population expands to the point where matchmaking can put new players against other new players. Also not having a solo q means that the ladder is all mixed up and weird. Again meaning new players could get destroyed by solo q veterans who formed a team on an evening.

P.s. At least there isnt a gear differential as well as a skill differential!

maybe they should have started with a lower base rating?
so a new player enters the ladder a bit “lower”

btw i loved the idea someone mentioned some time ago, putting a + to your MMR if you are teamQ’ing
since no one knows: lets say MMR is the rating of the whole team together (ind. ratings mixed up by some weird formular). so depending on your way to Q for tournaments an extra amount is added to your teams MMR.
for example:
soloQ = your own rating into MMR
duoQ = your and your teammates rating +20 into MMR
tripleQ = your individual ratings +30 into MMR
quadQ = individual ratings +50
fullteamQ = individual ratings +80
… or whatever numbers
