I feel I should throw this out there, because for some reason it always seems to catch people by surprise.

When HoT launches, despite the beta weekend events to help iron out such issues, there will be bugs. There will be lots of bugs, some of them may even be game breaking. This is an inevitable occurrence, and should be expected by every single player in the game. At the time of launch ANet will have ironed out every one that they are aware of, but as we should all know by now there will be things that appear on the live servers that can’t and won’t show up on their test servers.

These should not be considered ANet’s fault. These should not be considered an insult to the player base. That being said, there will be people who will think otherwise. They will be angry, either because of their initial excitement or because they’re arrogant and self-entitled perfectionists that have no idea what goes into the development of such games as Guild Wars 2.

Temper your excitement and your expectations.

Oh… so you are saying it’s actually ok to set a release date and release a completely broken product?

Because it is not.

The industry is merely lazy and spoiled because they can just patch it up if it’s broken.
“Arrogant self-entitled perfectionists” who might be working in fields where you actually have to make a working product by your deadline not a heap of bugs you can patch up later.

Those other industries have deadlines too, but they cannot afford to mess around with their products. It’s all about organization and Anet seems to have the organization level of a ball of yarn.

You on the other hand have to watch and press the high damage attack skills at the right time.

I’m asking a legit question i think. Back when the warden was fixed, it was said it was an unintended functionality so i assumed that we were meant to be unable to protect ourselves from certain projectiles. This same is true also for the guardian wall and shield which were made useless in a few places.

If it is not meant to, can we please get it fixed?
If it is, can we give the same functionality BACK to the phantasmal warden when not traited for reflects?

Thanks.

Economy vs dungeoneers

Let’s say you get 100 per hour (that’s probably still low, you can do better than 1 chest every 36 seconds). That’s 5g 46s generated by a single chest farmer. If a train is comprised of 40 people, they made 218g 40s out of thin air.

Let’s take an average CoE run. Everyone in the party gets 3g for the 3 paths, plus a few champ bags that generate amounts of coin similar to the chestfarm bags. The CoE run could take an hour, accounting for different party compositions, different levels of play. The dungeon being closed after a path and so on. Let’s say they may generate a similar 5g 46s per person per hour. In this case you have to have 8 full parties running CoE to generate the same amount of gold. But unlike chestfarming, after their run they are done with CoE for the day. Chestfarmers can dig endlessly.

Now tell me, how do you not get a lot of direct gold in SW as compared to the dungeons?

I’m not that versed in economics to really argue about money generated and whatnot, but this comparison strikes me as a bit odd.
You say the dungeoneers are done after CoF. But they could very well move on to other dungeons, and keep generating gold there. Also when they leave CoF, there will probably be new people coming for a run, so there will be pretty much always people running CoF. It’s not like it just stops after those 8 parties.
Granted, CF keeps running during this time as well, but it’s not always the same people. There’s constant dropping in and out of the zerg. Not everyone runs the farm for the whole day.

It does not matter how many are dropping out. We are talking about global gold generation. Not gold generated by a single person.

I also remember when they said they were adding fractal weapons boxes. They then said it is content that is above level 50 and not currently in the game. 2 years later that content never arrived.

When it comes to fractals, don’t hold your breath about what was said.

But the most gold generated is from silverwaste so why isn’t it getting needed?:/ just because dungeons generate more gold than fractals doesn’t mean it generates a lot of gold, 30 gold for playing 5-6 hours only once a day is hardly any gold I would nerf over.

You don’t get a lot of direct gold from the silverwastes, you get items to sell or salvage and then sell on the TP. TP doesn’t add gold to the game, just move it around between players. Dungeons add new gold to the game.

According to the wiki, just the embroidered coin purses give between 1s and 9s 92c. That’s 5s 46c on average. Now i don’t know how many purses you get on average per hour, but i’m pretty sure you get tons as all the chestfarmers have always said.

Hey John,

i got a couple of questions:
Since you nerf the dungeons hard how is a new player able to go into fractals or even raids? You need an ascended armour and well, we who all have one know how expensive it is.
How is a new player able to get the money for dunno more then 20 bolts of damask? That means you need 20*300 silk scraps => 6.000 and more. How is a new player able to get that amount of silk to build an ascended armour for just one char?

Another question: The fact, that you nerf the dungeons means, random players don’t run them in future no more. How is a new player able to get dungeonmaster – or like me dungeoneer? Only threw pvp?

I get the idea why you nerf it but there are dungeons where the reward is great – CoE or Arah. Where aetherpath get too less reward for my opinion.

Besides the fact that you force more on a content which player dont like play that much (look on lfg how much groups their are for dungeons & fractals) i get the point that you don’t have to design a whole story for a fractal. You focus on LA, the other areas of Tyria are not interesting.
Example:
CoF or CoA need an event chain to open the gates, same as arah. Since dugeons get less appealing players don’t do these events anymore => the maps get less popular and more empty.

What are your anwsers here? How can a noob join a fractal with no AR, and no much idea of the gameplay? Dungeons were the perfect spot for them to grow on exp and earn money to buy an asc. armour.

You mean people can’t get mats through laurels and the Silverwastes? Or gold? Who knew?

No…. He means that in dungeons you earned money AND experience. If you gained experience in chest farming, are you very ready to do fractals 50 because you can press F?

I am not a dungeon speedrunner.

I am not a min-maxer

I prefer full clear runs over skipping.

I enjoy dungeons for the opportunity to enjoy a bit of group content more involved than open world play that takes a little while and has a nice reward at the end.

I don’t do dungeons just for the rewards, but they are part of the overall experience. Lowering the rewards lessens the experience.

More than anything else this feels, to me, like an effort to devalue the base game so as to encourage sales of the expansion. They couldn’t come right out and remove dungeons without looking very bad in the game press so they just make them less appealing. I won’t be surprised if this is just the first of multiple steps to discourage playing dungeons.

I doubt that.

What I think this is: the removal of a gold faucet, for the reasons alluded to by the Pope; and an attempt to remove the reason to speed run the dungeons. If it works, as seems likely, then whose left in the dungeon LFG’s except people who are doing them for fun? This may result in less, “COF2 Exp only, berserker only, 8K AP only.” and less (maybe none?) exclusion based on meeting fast farm requirements. Ironically, this may not mean “anything goes” players getting a run faster.

This means exactly one thing. People who know how to do dungeons will not do them. They will move on to “other locations”. Which will leave everyone who hates the “COF2 Exp only, berserker only, 8k AP only” to do the dungeons themselves. And fail at them or take an hour to do said cof p2. Fun, right?

Compare this with fractals. You are not skipping 80% of a given path, and you’re not speedrunning it in 5 minutes. The only exploit I can think of off the top of my head is the safe spot in the rotating laser room of the aether fractal. The other stuff, like the skip in dredge? Fixed within a month. Grawl? It’s a trash fight and two boss fights. You can skip the bats if you want. Catbot? You can skip like seven harpies.

The fact remains that _dungeons reward extremely well for content that is extremely short/easy compared to fractals.

Have you ever seen how fractals are being done? You skip harpies, you skip the dredge, there are safe spots everywhere. You’re not speedrunning it in 5 minutes? A full set of fractals on level 50 takes 20-30 minutes.

I understand we are being herded from dungeons to somewhere else. I also understand that not everybody likes dungeons (i do).

The right way isn’t to deincentivize dungeons. The right way would be to make content that people like to do and make that rewarding too so that everybody finds something they like.

It’s also true that dungeons didn’t change and won’t change so they’re boring, repetitive, etc, but…

Let us do our boring, repetitive dungeons and still get decent rewards for our time spent. Or do you need the metrics to show that killing off dungeons was a good decision? Statistics to prove that the new content ideas work so well because less and less people do dungeons?

Can you trust such metrics when you actively herded people elsewhere? Pressing F in SW is already way more gold, way more repeatable with no daily limit.

It you want people to go from dungeons to “other locations”, make those other locations fun and rewarding and people will go there.

It does need a very short cast time with no after-cast, though,

I disagree with you, and so does ArenaNet… Cheers!

It also means when you see the mesmer’s burst coming, and you dodge it, you will successfully counter play it instead of having your dodge suddenly interrupted or prevented.

The counter-play is the long charging time of the mantra skill itself plain and simple.

Easy to achieve actually when accounting to all those hip defensive skills.

They have long duration, enough to get the mantra up.

Your point does nothing to refute my own. You’re still blowing a necessary defensive recharge in order to charge your Mantra of Distraction. This is about as wise as a Celestial Dagger/Dagger Elementalist blowing his or her Lightning Flash to land Churning Earth. If you think that’s also a good idea, then you and I have nothing more to discuss.

Wrong. My points counters yours. Mesmers have so many of those hip defensive skills, and the stealth skills last pretty long thanks to PU. The recharge is low enough for all of them to be on-demand whenever necessary.

The difference between Lightning Flash + Churning Earth vs. The prestige + Mantra of Distraction is that The Prestige + Mantra of Distraction is worth it. The instant MLG stun is leagues better than a few stacks of bleed. lol. I can’t believe you actually compared the two.

Wait, so I have to take the Chaos line + PU + a torch and or Decoy and or mass invis so I can run MoD? I thought there was no cost/investment?

Anyway, how many hip defensive skills do Mesmers have exactly (how many’s “so many”) to serve in the use of recharging mantras? Can you list them for us? I’m fascinated.

  • Mind Wrack- Blinds with Blinding dissipation
  • Cry of Confusion- Blinds
  • Diversion- Instant Daze/stun interrupt
  • Distortion- Invulnerability
  • Decoy- Stealth
  • Portal- if you so choose.
  • Blink- Teleport
  • Mass Invisibility- Stealth
  • The Prestige- Stealth
  • Illusionary Wave- Knockback to keep melee away.
  • Illusionary Leap- For MLG teleport.

Learn your class

And these will serve to cover the 2,75s of charging the mantra? You do know you cannot perform most of these while charging or you cancel the charge?

So from my point of view I would like to see players having the choice between focusing on either dps, healing or eventually tanking. And before you start with ‘’gw2 has no trinity’’ go back to them saying you can play anything you want because there are people who want to heal or tank. Raids are a good opportunity for this to work, but after the beta I’m a bit worried it’ll go back to the mindless dps once people learn the bosses a bit.

Edit: Yes, in every other MMO I’ve always played a healer.

You realize that raids will create an even stricter meta, where certain professions just won’t be able to join. Not because of a dungeon taking 2 minutes longer, but because it would actually be unbeatable. This is something quite funny, because it comes from all the whine about zerker meta being exclusive and now instead we’ll get an even more exlusive one. Good job.

Oh wait, i actually wanted to comment on “mindless dps”. There is no mindless dps and there never was. If you did instances with only dps in mind, you were doing it wrong and either wiped a lot or were carried hard. I’m sorry that you never found out that you can support your party with boons, reflects, blocks, invulnerability, condition cleanse, stealth, CCs. It means you never played the game to its full potential.

One thing that nobody who asked for mounts ever considered:

What kind of animal would it be that the smallest asura and the biggest norn or charr could ride just as comfortably without looking really bad? None. It does not compute. And if you start limiting mount choices by race or scale the same animal to asura and to charr size, that’s also quite goofy.

That said, the question of mounts is something that cannot be decided with reason. Both sides are very passionate about it. I just simply wouldn’t like to see mounts in the game.

As for the wider topic:

  • I don’t have a problem with getting ascended gear (i have a problem storing all those ascended weapon and armour chests).
  • The holy trinity is coming soon™ in HoT raids.
  • When Anet updated the gemstore more regularly, they took a lot of heat for that too. Personally i would like to see more stuff in the store (more options cannot hurt).

Now you’re just hating on zerker to have something to hate on.
Ironic, but the dungeons where the zerker meta evolved are actually perfect because you can literally do every dungeon with any stat combo you want. It may need more time to do it with a cleric’s setup, but you will eventually get there.

Raids on the other hand need the dps from zerker and sinister stats.
This is pretty entertaining. I can already see how the “evil” zerker meta using people will breeze through raids (changing to other stats where necessary), while the zerk-haters will just cry themselves to sleep every night because the lack of damage will make their raids fail.

It’s a preferred style for optimization.

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: kolompi.1287

kolompi.1287

The solution to all of this is simple, just make sure that you don’t NEED to be meta to pass the content. Allow a broad range of gearing to be plenty good to get you through the content. If you give players multiple options, then you need to make sure that ALL of those options are good enough to get through the content. Don’t test things using ideal builds, test them using Clerics Thieves and Zerker Druids.

I think ideally a lot less of stats would come from gear, and would just become baseline to the character. Want to DPS? Pick the more damaging skills. Want to heal? Pick skills that heal. You shouldn’t have to worry about what stats you have, you should just have whatever stats you need.

Nice, because you do not need to be meta to clear content. Never needed to be.

Fashion wars is the true endgame, so this is not surprising at all.

That’s because bugs will be fixed (may take up to 3 years sometimes) but nobody doubts they are bugs. But this was in the game and has been removed due to some idiots complaining. This is one of the reasons.

The other being that people don’t give a skritt about line casting or whatever but they tend to be somewhat attached to their characters that they spend time on. Ice bow linecasting, as broken as it was, did not really break the game for anyone.
