Peaceful things to do in Gw2 (Suggestions)

Back in the days when I played WOW, a bunch of players like myself who got tired of the usual go kill some monster, get reward grind decided to hold some of our own activities.
One was a race across the world from one starting point to the end point, and you had to go thru some pretty bad areas., ir areas much higher in level than you.
The catch was that all the entrants in the race had to be LV 1 chars, and whoever got to the end first won, and the prize was the sum of the race entry fee, which was paid to the race orgamizer.
At the end , the organizer paid the winner.
So the idea was you created a LV 1 char, headed for the start, and then started running.
If there was no winner, the prize jackpoted to the next race.
Think this would catch on in GW2.

Why can't we trade players face-to-face?

The TP isnt fair because of flipping or any other mechanism which allows players to make gold from the TP by simply buying and selling items.
Where do you think the gold that these players are making is coming from?

Thats not possible unless you have a monopoly supply of the crafting materials, and thats impossible in an MMO where anyone is free to gather any crafting materials.

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

mauried.5608

It doesnt.
Where do you think the merchants scattered around the world get the gold to buy all your useless junk items from?
The game has no supply / demand economics in it as far as the NPCs go.
They will always buy your junk for the same price regardless of how much of the same junk they have bought off other players.
MMOs have infinite resources which never run out and NPCs who will always buy your junk, so without some sort of taxes, then hyperinflation will happen.
It usually does anyway after a long time .
A better option would be some kind of wealth tax which would hit the richer players, but that would be too unpopular.

Would be very easy to implement a tax on a player to player trading system.
Could tax both sides of the trade if needed.

What happens if you do no damage at all, but simply apply conditions to the boss so that they are slowed down and do less damage to everyone else?
Likewise if you do nothing other than rezzing dead players.
It would be interesting to see the methodology of measuring participation in an event.

Sick of the Gem Store

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

mauried.5608

All MMOs have a running cost as well as the development costs.
Game sales and expansion sales cover the development costs, but not the running costs.
If the game doesnt have a monthly sub, then that lost revenue has to come from somewhere else.
Thats the Gem store, and to get the equivalent of a monthly sub, the gemstore has to sell an equivalent amounts of goodies to make up the lost revenue.
Which means that all the good stuff has to purchased in the gem store.

What makes Waypoints contested?

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: mauried.5608

mauried.5608

Well, was on again last night, and same deal, all but 2 were contested.
No major events occurring and no fighting around the waypoints.
Getting around in Dragons Stand is tuff by yourself , and at 10 PM Australian time there are very few people in the zone so any events that do occur always fail.
Would seem to be a bit more logical to have the Waypoints contested only when events are occurring which are near the waypoints.

"Taken" names

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: mauried.5608

mauried.5608

Another option that usually works, is to double up on the consonants in the name.
eg the names Xowen and Xowin which are taken.
Try Xxowen or Xowenn or Xowwen.
This generally works unless the name is extremely popular, and then you can try doubling up both the vowels and consonants.
eg Xxoween
If you desperately want a particularily sounding name then simply spell it differantly.
eg for Xowen becomes Ecksohn.
This mostly always works.

"Taken" names

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

mauried.5608

Ive not as yet found a single MMO that deletes character names after long periods of inactivity.
All MMOs want you to come back, and they all know that if your char names are gone no one will.
Conversly, if someone buys a new MMO and finds their favourite names are already taken they will still play the game .

What makes Waypoints contested?

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

mauried.5608

Was wandering around in Dragons Reach this morning just farming stuff, and every waypoint in the zone bar one was contested.
I went to a number of the contested waypoints and there was no fighting taking place, no mobs nearby, or indeed anything I could see that would make the waypoint contested.
So what else is there that makes them contested.
Really makes getting around the zone hard.

I really dont understand posts like this.
All HOT does is adds content and new stuff to do to the game.
You DONT HAVE to do it.
Its NOT mandatory.
No MMO ever will make everyone happy.
I find parts of HOT tuff, but the bits I cant do I simply ignore and do the bits I can.
I dont hate the game because there are parts of HOT that are too tuff for me.
I can simply go back and do all the parts of the original game that I havnt done.
If you do hate the game, then why are you still playing it

Are there any in your guild.

Guild wars 3?

No levels and no zones.
Just a large world where there arnt arbitrary lines which determine whether the monsterts get tougher or not.
And a world with consequence, ie where the actions of players determine what happens in the world in the future for a defined period.
eg simple example , small camp of NPCs gets overrun by monsters and all the NPCs die.
Until players rid the town of the monsters they wont leave and the NPCs wont come back.

Seller beware? Avoid the TP?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: mauried.5608

mauried.5608

A question that never gets asked, and its relevant to all games that have gold sellers and some form of trading system is where do Gold Sellers get the gold they sell from?
And the answer of course is that they get it from all the other players in the game who buy goods from the TP.
So , all the games players are bankrolling the gold sellers, albeit unintentionally.

What would you like to see in next expansion?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Id just like to see something in the game that isnt based on
Kill something – get reward – rise , repeat.
For example a player class that progresses thru the game without any need to kill things to get there, eg a trading class that can set up shops and sell things, or a story line that involves making things from hard to get items that are only sold from hard to reach vendors.
One feature that existed in WOW and was I found extremely useful was vendors who sold limited supply items , which were very useful, and wandered around the world , so they couldnt be camped.

I dont understand the “I am being forced to do something” line thats seems to be common in complaints on this forum.
In an MMO you are NOT forced to do anything.
There seems to be a mentality that if I want XXX and I am required to do YYY to get it then I am forced to do YYY.
Not everyone can have everything, unless you are prepared to meet all the criteria needed to get everything.
In all reward based MMOs , in order to get a reward of some type you will be required to do something to get it.
But you are not being forced too, as getting the reward isnt mandatory.

These are one off items that could be purchased from the online shop foe gems and could be deployed anywhere, but not in any instanced areas.
You could only carry 1 at a time.
They would last for 5 minutes and would appear on the map allow anyone to port there.
Similar in scope to portable Trading Post vendors which already exist.

Ive had a win with this, at least getting past windy station goes.
With Bountiful Dissillusionment traited, you get 5 seconds of stability with a shatter, even if there are no clones to shatter.
Found this out by pure luck.
The description of the trait is a bit vague.
5 secs is just enough to get across the first windy ravine , the 2nd windy ravine is easier.
Hope this helps any other mesmers, and yes, Goemms Lab is a kitten of a JP.

Is something else needed as well as dodging?
Seems that the clone is more likley to be created if Im actually fighting something than when Im not.
Otherwise , is there anyway for mesmers to get stability without shattering clones?

GW2 2016... A message to devs and players

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: mauried.5608

mauried.5608

The basic problem is that most MMO players have no concept of how much it costs to run an MMO and expect the game devs to keep adding more stuff for players to do while the player base wants it all done for free.
You only have to read all the posts about what the Devs should be doing to make this game great, but NEVER have I seen anything about offering to pay more to play it.
Far too many players living in economic fantasy land.
Would you be happy if GW2 was P2P like WOW with the same monthly sub?

Repetetive?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: mauried.5608

mauried.5608

All MMOs have grinding.
Grinding Is absolutely necessary, otherwise the entire player base would get to the level cap, do all the content just once and then complain that there is nothing left to do.
Making new content takes far longer than it does for the player base to go thru the new content, so some mechanism has to be in place to make the player base do the same content multiple times.
Hence rewards based on RNGs .

Perspective from a vet mmo gamer

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: mauried.5608

mauried.5608

Totally agree.
All MMOs suffer from a basic problem with their design, and thats the time taken to create new graphical content takes far longer than it takes for players to experiance that content, so the player base rapidly runs out of things to do unless the Devs provide some mechanism to coerce the players into experiancing the same content over and over.
Usually done by offering rewards based on RNGs , but eventually even the rewards arnt enough.
Theres the WOW solution which is simply keep producing expansions and keep jacking up the level cap, but eventually even this idea wears out.
I dont know what the solution is, or even if there is one with current technology.
Ideally a game that could redesign itself and dynamically change the world on a frequent basis would be cool, but currently not possible with existing computing technology.

Official statement on 3rd party damage meter?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: mauried.5608

mauried.5608

Most MMOs dont like 3rd party programs that read memory, simply because this is a favourite method used to make bots.
If you can use one of the supplied game APIs do read the damage then I would think thats OK, as long as you only read your own chars damage.
Damage meters are generally controversial if you start reading the damage of other players.
Likewise an ingame line parser I would think would also be OK, provided that no memory reading is needed.

Personal critique of the Personal Story

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: mauried.5608

mauried.5608

Theres a lot of coding work for the personal story that you will only see if you play every class, join every order, and opt to play all the differant variants in the personal story.
Most MMOs dont even have a personel story or anything like it.
About the only minor irritation I see is that you cant tell the NPCs to stop doing what they are doing when they are doing something totally stupid, such as running into large mob of bad guys and trying to kill them all single handed.
Same goes for some of the escort quests.
Just being able to tell them to stand where you are would help a lot.

This event requires you to kill the Sovereign Eye of Zaitan in a large room filled with water.
Ive done this qst before on other chars, and while its fairly tuff its not impossible.
Tried to do it today, and got the Sovereign Eye down to around 50% and then the Eye dissapeared , and 2 other lesser eyes appeared all shooting the purple lights across the water, which rapidly kill you if they hit.
The Sovereign Eye then reappears, but now all the Eyes are invulnerable and I cant do any damage to them.
No way forward from here.
Anyone else had probs with this event?

Golds Deflation

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: mauried.5608

mauried.5608

MMOs cant have deflation because a MMO has an infinite money supply.
Resources never run out, and NPCs will always buy your resources for the same price, no matter how much you have to sell.
Where do the NPCs get the money from to buy your items?
Its effectively the game printing its own money, and this is going on continuously.
They do have inflation which can go up and down , but it always goes up more than down.
Expansions always cause a cyclic blip in the economy, but within 6 months or so, the economy will be back to where it was prior to HOT.

What happened to the game?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: mauried.5608

mauried.5608

All MMOs that have an economy must have gold sinks otherwise the game suffers from runaway inflation.
Even the current gold sinks arnt good enough to prevent inflation as they are all discressionary, ie you arnt forced to spend the gold .
And all MMOs must have grind simply because the time it takes players to experiance new content is far less than the time it takes for the Devs to make the new content.
With no grind , players would be forever complaining that there is nothing left for them to do, as they have done it all.
Blizzards WOW is the master of grind , but it works , as people keep playing it and keep complaining that they hate the grind.
Bottom line though is simple.
If you dont like a game ,DONT PLAY IT.
No point playing it and continually complaining that you dont like it.

The price of a MMO falls from the day its released, so the original game may have cost $50 for example 3 years ago, but the original game today is worth close to nothing.
HOT now includes the original game because the original game is worth close to nothing.

Even something like a sign that says there is a jumping puzzle around here somewhere, just so you know they exist.
