Go figure … I just started levelling my Ranger a coupla nights ago. Hello, timing!
My ranger will hit level 80(currently 78) today after being a pure spvp char for a hellish long time
Was planning on farming apothecary and going bm bunker, but now I feel tempted to play my 30/25/15/0/0 spvp build in pve. greatsword throw finally got fixed and knockback range on longbow got buffed. Perfect for my build
(edited by naphack.9346)
So now Rampage will be promoted from an occasional alternative to warbanner to being the main elite of my hammer warrior? I love that skill.
Also DEM HEALZ!
Ranger:
[random stuff
unimportant]
Counterattack—Crippling Throw: This skill can now be used while moving. Increased the cripple duration to 5 seconds.
[random stuff
unimportant]
THIS IS THE SINGLE BEST CHANGE EVER!
WHY DID IT TAKE SO LONG?
1. Yes. Actually, I feel like they work better in pairs than alone(where ranger is just better for the PvE/capping side of things) because alone they have to pull out way too often.
2. What should it be? Good in small scale against soft targets, bad against big targets and in large scale, as expected, I’d say
3. Skill cap wise, I’d say, the ranger is a tad big higher due to the nature of pet mechanics, but thief play goes beyond executing skill rotations, which most classes called “hard” come down to in the end. On the other hand, the lower end of thief play is way harder than the lower end of ranger play, so I’d say, thief requires more skill overall, but I still have more respect for people who mastered their ranger than people who mastered their thief.
4. popular builds are
10/30/30/0/0 D/D X with Bers/Soldiers (Conservative backstab build),
20/0/30/20/0 P/D D/D full carrion (wild bill build),
0/30/20/20/0 D/P X with Bers/Soldiers (permastealth build),
10/30/0/0/30 D/D X with full Valkyrie (pure backstab (+ steal) build)
Dunno about sword builds, the last time I rolled sword in WvW was when I ran around with a lev 17 thief and found myself to be more useful by pistol whipping/immobilizing low hp people in zerg warfare.
Of these builds, I played wild bill and pure backstab so far. Both are rather amusing against slower builds but die pretty hard to stunlock burst duel builds.

6. others mentioned already.

New shouts:
“FIGHT ME!”
interrupts foes in a 600 AoE and forces them to use their #1 on the warrior for 3 seconds. (yes, thieves will hate this)
Can be ended by stun breakers.
“GET UP, YOU COWARDS!”
Grants Retaliation and breaks stun on allies in the area.
“GET OVER HERE!”
pull target foe to your position.
Just tell me your mesmers build.
It might help :P
Yeah, I wonder, which is better, a dungeon about silly Asuras or a god kitten GOD?
The one that could turn space/time inside out and possibly affect other aspects of the game.
Space and time look perfectly normal to me. I was on Tyria 250 years ago and I can see it today. I’ve even been to the reactor, everything looks normal to me.
I want to live in your reality, where it is normal that creatures simply phase in and out of existance.
You forgot Quip
Asura Technology: Highly advanced cubic tech that radiates alchemical power, can permanently float, can teleport, can program advanced A.I.
Charr Technology: A heap of crude metal scraps tossed together like so much scattered kitty litter.
You have to give the Charr credit on how they utilize their limited scientific knowledge, though. Every part, as miniscule as it may be, serves the very same purpose: To kill.
Such dedication and pragmatism definitely deserves praise, as not even the inquest could devise such efficient killing machines.
This, however shows again the savagery of this beastly race. Their only drive is to kill. They are not quite as single minded as destroyers, but that doesn’t make it better.
You’d think, a race, capable of rational thought should be more civilized, but in the end, they are still primitive savages.

kitten.
So the teeth are at 2500?
interesting.
Seriously, there is an entire forum section dedicated to being a trashcan for useless ideas a place, where people can post ideas and suggestions. The warrior section is for constructive discussion and not for dumping in random numbers without any base for discussion.
You neither ask for opinions nor for help at balancing/ideas to make it work, so why do you even post here?
No offense, but I smell flamebait and this kind of thread will only clutter the forum with useless lines of text while the resulting kittenstorm will deter others from posting.
now who trolled whom?
“like 125%” != “exactly 125%”
Probably making myself hated for defending him tho.
Just make the active ground target and teleport the spirit to the target location. No need for fancy movement. Also, moving spirits as default breas spirits for so many builds. A skill should be useful for as many builds as possible and traits should allow individualisation. Not the other way round.
Rock Dog.
Best pet ever. I’d never run with sth else.
That or a pet skelk
When I imagine a Mace thief, I’m thinking about the thugs and the muscle in the Thieves’ Guild.
These are the guys that you are afraid of when you owe the wrong guild money. Contracted muscle that appear in dark alleys with large blunt objects to “make an example” out of you.
And what is the point of these thugs?
Yes, to intimidate and beat up people who oppose the guild.
Now, if you give them a mace, you might aswell give them a crossbow or a dagger, the result would be the same.
The point of giving such thugs blunt weapons is, so they can beat the living kitten out of people. Give them a mace and it won’t be much of an “example”. You might aswell just put a bolt or dagger through the heart of the target, as the mace will bust their skull open on the first hit, outright killing them.
If you send some thugs after people, you either want to:
-Hurt them enough, so they can’t move for a couple days, but are still alive to pay their debts
or
-Literaly beat them to death in a long, drawn out execution, so others are scared kittenless and pay their debts.
For both tasks, a mace is not really suited due to simply being too deadly. If you just want to kill them quietly, just send some cutthroat, there is no reason to bring such a heavy weapon.
If you look for some mace-to-face action, look at the armored dudes. Open field combat is their task, after all.
The only other class, which could realistically use a mace, is the ranger.
and @ new weapon sets:
Torch, nuff said.
I’d actually go back to condition builds, if that ever happens.
I think the bookah was just embarrassed because our progeny are smarter than anything in their race…also enslavin the dredge? Sorry that was the dwarves not us…if you are referring to sorrows embrace that is the vile inquest which is akin to comparing every charr to those bloody fire legion(that’s what their called right? They all seem the same)
What’s wrong with that?
Charr is Charr. All of them are primitive savages.
And they are annoyingly noisy…
The engineers 1500 range AoE grenades always hit, its Ranger its kitten…
And the engi will have carpal tunnel syndrome after 5 minutes of spammin nades.
There is a clear difference:
A Mace does have a metal head, is designet to be used as a weapon and not simply some sort of makeshift club.
Picking up an iron pipe and swinging it wildly doesn’t make it a mace either.
You gotta distinguish between “real” weapons, of which maces are a subset and makeshift weapons.
Those exist in the game, btw. Look at environmental weapons and the like. Oakheart Branch etc.
It’s a totally different weapon, so do you want to introduce another weapon set? :O
Hey, I’d rather have the YOLO-trait be:
-Vengeance no longer has a cooldown and lasts 20% longer
25 stacks vuln, 25 stacks might, 30-0-0-10-30, below 50% health etc pp
it’s not really min maxing if you had the other guy strip naked…
It’s actually min-maxing driven to the extreme.
Maximize your damage, minimize their armor.
Actually, a mace doesn’t fit as well as you may think.
Historically speaking, the main point of having a mace was busting armor.
While Axes would be a rather risky weapon due to armorsmiths devising some neat tricks, so they slide off and there still being the chance of an axe getting stuck and impossible to remove after successfully penetrating armor and swords having tons of problems on their own, mainly being absolutely useless outside of Hamer/Pommel strikes and half-sword stab attacks, the mace was the undisputed king of armored combat.
In a battle between two armored foes, a mace is a terrifying weapon. Even, if it doesn’t hit full on, it can still cause concussions and limit your movements by damaging the armor.
You gotta differentiate between maces and clubs.
The mace was mainly a widespread weapon for open field combat due to being easier to craft than swords, while also being sturdier and not suffering any drawbacks against armored foes.
As it still required lots of higher quality metal, it was still expensive and, against unarmored opponents, way overkill, especially for guys who are short on money, as thieves typically are(else, they wouldn’t need to rob people, would they?).
Basically, it doesn’t have a reason to be used by thieves. Against armored opponents, if you are unarmored, your only chance is getting a dagger stab through an opening in the armor, before he realizes. You can not stand there with your mace and swing at him, when all it takes is a slight slash from a sword or whatever to kill you.
Against unarmored foes: You basically got a stick with a huge ball of steel on top of it. It’s heavy, it’s rather slow and it is a sure kill, if it hits the head.
Replace it with an axe: It’s not quite as heavy, rather fast and a sure kill, if it’s a clean hit about anywere. Replace it with about any blade and it gets the job done way better. They are faster, not as heavy and an absolutely sure kill, if it’s a clean hit anywhere.
This is all, if you want to kill.
If you don’t want to kill, don’t even try to look at the mace. It breaks bones, causes internal bleeding and can pop the skull wide open with as much as a glancing blow against unarmored targets. Maces are no weapons for thieves to use, unless they are stolen from a Guardian. Let the heavy tin cans swing their balls of steel on short sticks, because it makes sense for them to use them. If you want to kill, get a dagger, if you don’t want to kill, pick up a friggin oakheart branch from somewhere and smack’em good. The mace is inefficient as a killing tool(for thieves) and generally not suited for anything else.
Why would you want to craft a warrior?
I could understand, if it was a level 50 thief(actually crafted my thief aswell), but warrior got no problems getting levels quickly.
As for stats, just go for a mix of power/crit and throw in some precision as needed. For defense, just slot all signets.
Fastest way to get to 80 outside investing large sums in crafting all professions: Faceroll through harathi hinterlands till you are level 50, then make your personal storyline till you make it to the straits of devastation, then it’s a walk in the park.
Did you put it on auto attack?
On a more serious note, maybe the last patch messed with your setup…
What are you guys getting all riled up for?
The build is hard getting used to, but definitely counterable.
Once the fight drags on, you will get used to the timing and just drop in some instant daze to interrupt his heartseeker. Boom. He just blew 8 initiative and will have to use his stealth skills to run away.
It’s not like a CnD build, which can be countered by any faceroll build with the right strategy/timing, but it CAN be countered… And rendered useless one way or another even without having to resort to interrupts.
If you go into a pvp fight without any control skills or any other way to punish such behavior, the joke is on you.
20/0/30/20/0
Well, technically, it’s a Venom Build.
Bleed Runes, P/D+D/0 with a Sigil of Geomancy in the offhand dagger, full carrion.
Sigil of Geomancy is great against people who try to press into melee range no matter what.
Chain CC and Immobilize, combined with spike damage.
I ran a P/D condition build, too. They have 1 stun breaker at most:
Signet of Shadows / Caltrops or Venom / Stunbreak or Venom / Basilisk Venom
If it’s a venom build, it already got problems with a simple 100blades frenzy bullrush warrior and if it’s a caltrop build, you don’t even need THAT much spike, because he will have way less control abilities. It’s still the same, tho: Pin him down and spike him.
Some examples:
Thief: D/P probably eats P/D alive for totally different reasons as stated above. P/D depends on outmaneuvering your opponent, while it actually has up to no maneuverability outside stealth. D/P is simply superior in maneuverability, positioning and blind application. P/D can pile up more pressure than D/P, but not against that constant heal and CR.
Mesmer: Offhand pistol by itself is already a great counter to P/D. IDuelist, combined with an on-demand interrupt will melt P/D. Apart from that, a standard issue shattercat will also put some pressure on P/D thieves, but it will be risky.
Warrior: If you really want to hard counter a P/D thief: Mace+Shield, Greatsword, Bullrush, reflect trait. There. He won’t ever kill you, while you can spike him within 2 seconds, during which he is stunned.
Let me rephrase it:
Do you want to stay in battle and be able to duel or do you want to simply roam and burst opponents while they are engaged in fights against other players?
As it stands, people wil go “but my 10/30/0/0/30 full zerk build is survivable because [insert random rubbish, which takes 3 months of getting used to the build to put into action]”.
But that will still be their very own stuff, built for their own playstyle.
If you look for some kind of freeform build, it will probably be a sword build tho.
your question lacks a clear goal and thus, all the people in this forum will dump their builds on you.
Basically: WHAT DO YOU WANT YOUR THIEF TO BE?
Evasive? Sneaky? Onehitwonder?
Answer this question quickly, before the thread drowns in “I run x” or “just run x” posts.
The answer is all over this forum :P
Let’s talk gear:
You mentioned the allrounder, so I will start from there.
Typically, for PvE and WvW, you want your critical damage bonus to come from certain slots, due to rounding issues(some items grant way more crit damage per attribute point than others).
Namely and most importantly, you want crit damage in your jewels(Trinket upgrade slots). As for the rest, the most flexible is probably a mix of berserkers gear and soldiers(again, stat point conversion to critical damage, there should be some threads about this issue, you typically get crit damage from the ones with good conversion values and stuff the rest with raw stats).
There are attributes besides soldiers and berserkers, but for allround builds, these don’t matter much. For example, a purely backstab based build will probably run full valkyries armor with cavalier’s, valk or berserk trinkets(slotted berserk or valk) to get the maximum amount of crit damage possible, but still hit like a wet noodle when out of stealth(and not having fury) due to having no precision whatsoever.
There are other stats, such as knights, but generally, these don’t matter much for thieves.
As for weapons, pretty much everyone runs berserkers and so do I.

This list is way too long…
We need to know exactly what happened there, why it exploded, why chaotic materials are spilling in a recurring periodic event and why the incompetent cleanup krewe does the same mistake over and over again whenever that happens.
They can be glad, there’s so many selfless krewes around to stop that fire elemental each time it is created.
Slowly, I am beginning to suspect the inquest to conduct some long-term experiments about how many fire elementals(and resulting epic battles) the floor in that single room can take before it finally gets destroyed. And that cleanup krewe is probably part of them.
But the inquiry into the reactor incident will probably cover this one aswell.
But well, the answer to this particular question is probably similar to the one about who spends so much time rebuilding the tower atop the cliffs in Sparkfly Fen each time it gets destroyed by Tequatl.
(edited by naphack.9346)
1)Drop Hide in Shadows, get Signet of Malice. It’s PvE and caltrops heal you for a lot with the Signet.
2)I’d rather get D/D for Death Blossom over Shortbow, but that might be a matter of preference
3)Those traits in Deadly Arts are kinda wasted with this build. Looks like the sole reason to get them is 20% condition duration. Look into the Acrobatics line for some great alternate trait investment…
4) I don’t really get the point of all that initiative gain stuff, you have going on. To simply CnD off creeps, you don’t need initiative gain. Initiative gain on heal with HiS means 4 initiative every 30 seconds. What for? If you need initiative, dump 20 into Acrobatics. Also, get the blind on stealth trait over 2 initiative on stealth. AoE blind > 2 initiative, unless you do D/P, which you don’t.
5)While your runes are ok(not that overwhelming), I don’t quite agree with your (not-)sigil choice. Drop some bleed duration there(Sigil of Agony). If you go for an alternate melee set(D/D) instead of dual range, get Sigil of Geomancy. It’s cheap as dirt(pun intended) and got some nice, long lasting burst AoE bleed.
6) Again, on bleed duration: Most of your bleeds got a baseline duration of 3-4 seconds, so to get another tick, you need at least 30% duration increase.
Giver’s Weapons might also be worth a look, tho they are expensive :>
Else, get runes. I wouldn’t get more than 30% increase tho, as this is PvE and you can stack up to the bleed cap anyway, while there’s hardly any removal.
7) Signet of Shadows? Speed is everything in PvE. Killing stuff is easy, the most time is wasted on getting to points, so get that speed increase. Drop that venom for it. If you feel the need to poison foes, look at Sigil of Doom.
(edited by naphack.9346)
daily structure destroyer – destroy 3 walls.
Cmon, no more comments?
BUMP CUZ I LOVE THOSE IDEAS!
Edit: got ninjad
2 minutes…
Sounds interesting…
But needs some tweaking.
More small objective, less large ones, like one small objective per server PER MAP, while there is one mid- to large-sized objective per server and one huge objective(hold stonemist for xyz, hold all 3 garrisons for XYZ, hold all 3 keeps in Borderland X for Y), which applies to the whole matchup and lasts for a week.
Btw, most impossible achievement ever:
Stop Siegerazer from reaching the tower. Siegerazer will not stop to attack players.
This might work:
Badge+Karma -> Rare item x4 -> Mystic Forge → precursor → $$$
cba trying tho.
Waiting for the guys with the greatsword fetish to drop their comment.
Only Trinkets.
Why would you wat it in any other slot anyway?
It’s great as trinket, but anywhere else, theres simply better options.
for wvw, try:
P/D+D/0 (saving a weapon)
With Sigil of Geomancy in your offhand dagger.
Get a bunch of stealth related traits(namely blind on stealth and stealth duration) and a full set of Condition Gear.
Now, you can either get some points in trickery for caltrops on dodge, get some points in acrobatics and go for an evasive caltrop bleed build(something like 0/0/30/20/20 or 0/0/20/20/30) or go for a venom build with 20/0/30/20/0, getting venom related traits.
Whenever someone tries to press into melee, you CnD and stack bleeds. If they press more, you swap weapons to trigger Geomancy, creating more bleeds and death blossom right through them. If they try to kite, drop some cripples/immobs/torment on them.
If you feel like swapping back to pistol happens out of geomancy range too often, get
P(bleed duration)/D(Venom)
D(bleed duration)/D(Geomancy)
or something like that.
Acrobatics caltrops is more of a freeform evasive style, which can be built with stun breakers/stealth skills as needed, while venom builds rely entirely on CnD and blinds to stay alive, as you will typically slot BV+2 utility venoms(typically spider venom and Devourer or Skale Venom).
The Venom builds pack more punch, are better for chasing and got group utility but are also weaker against burst.
If you want to run the venom build, get some friends to run with you, preferrably ones with fast hitting summons(thieves, mesmers, …), cause those wreck with venom share.
(edited by naphack.9346)
Pretty simple:
Combine the two:
Promise the Asura to research into the Reactor incident, while asking them to cut down on global Waypoint costs.
I’m still undecided. While I definitely want to see the Fall of Abaddon more than the Thaumanova Reactor Incident, I have a deep-seated moral objection to Evon’s business practices. I mean, come on, even his economic incentive is nothing more than a shill for him to sell more of his stock! :P
As long, as we need to buy another currency to be able to buy those keys, the change in price won’t mean much to most players.
Actually, Evon probably wants to have gem prices skyrocket, so he can sell his personal stash of gems for loads of Gold. He’s trying to make it look like he gives alms to the masses, while in fact, the only ones who will benefit are the ones, who run the economy. The typical adventurers and defenders of Tyria will be left in the gutter.
#TeamKiel
On the other hand, we could buy loads of gems, vote for evon and sell them for loads of money…
My current Bank account reads 20 Gold. How many gems do you get for that again?
God, I should do un-fun dungeons or TP flipping instead of enjoying this game
As for fighting 1 v 5 with stealth it requires no skill. Here’s a sample video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q0QtQ1sotHo
Fixed that for you.
Seriously, why do people think it takes skill to be completely invisible to everyone around you while having complete control over the flow of combat at any given moment? Any random can Pistol 5 + Dagger 2 and occupy 5+ people for a while and it is the same with the lame Dagger 5 on the back.
It is a broken game mechanic that is being defended by trolls who do not want to let it go so progress can be made to actually make the Thief class useful.
Just look at the other super cheese build, Massive Evades. The Thief as a profession has a lot of different avenues to take but they will never see the light of day due to stealth and how the Thief is pushed towards this broken game mechanic.
Bottom line: Stealth in Guild Wars 2 is horribly designed and should be reworked, but never will be.
ranged instant dazes/stuns, shadowsteps, certain wall types, knockback bubbles, knockback skills, fear marks, …
All you need to do is interrupt the thief during his first heartseeker or make him hit you when he leaps back into the smoke field and he dies.
Also, there is still stealth disruption traps.
I said high skill.
not mid.
Let’s say, around 80% of the total skill ladder should be a good cut.
Anything lower than that will make the game mediocre and boring, anything more than that will be a pain in the behind for the developers and completely random at times.
Think you don’t realize that most of the people/pugs in WvW are terrible players that don’t know other classes besides their own and have no idea how to fight certain classes and either don’t ress at all or have no idea person get’s stealth stomped etc
So the mechanics that thieves have had since beta are an exploit, and the class should be nerfed, because wvw is full of terrible players? Did i really just read that?
Where the fk do you see me talk about them being exploits? dfq’s wrong with you im talking about how horrible most people are in wvw not knowing what to do.
Nobody said anything about standing still and fight. Stealthing is oke but every 2 sec. is just not balanced at all.
Just as that Koroshi vid all he did was continuously hit skill 5 to do little damage and stealth and he could get this guy in a whole zerg. That’s not how it’s ment to be imo lol.
I’ll check the traits out ye this seems quite abusable.
You say its not meant to be that way (despite having been that way since beta, except we didnt always have revealed so it was even easier), then you say its abuse. Is that clear enough for you? Classes should never be nerfed or balanced based on bad players, balance should always be at the highest level of play
actually, no.
Balance should be looked at in a broad context but mainly be applied towards “high” skill level. It should never be done towards the elite few, nor towards the utter garbage tier of players, because that can turn ridiculous quite fast.
Fellow defenders of Tyria.
As many non-asuran will read my letter, I will try to use less sophisticated speech, so even a drunk Skritt can still understand it.
As the dragon threat grows larger, we need a leader, who understands the needs of the people. Tyria as a whole stands before two choices:
At one side, we got the wealthiest man of all, who does business with people, who have proven to be willing to do anything to get more money, while on the other hand, we have a person, who stands firmly by her beliefs. We do not have to go as far as to analyze the character of these persons. Let’s just look at straight facts:
Personally for me, the incidents at the Thaumanova Reactor have been very shocking. I went there personally and helped to clean up the leftovers of the explosion, risking my life to try and contain extremely dangerous chaotic materials from spreading.
Many krewes gave their lives to seal off the hazardous anomaly caused by the explosion, yet we still know so little about it.
For me, as a man, who helped to clean up and still follows occasional distress calls, researching that incident might be the most important one out of all the points brought forward by Ellen Kiel.
However, let’s move on to the important matter at hand: How to win the war.
Instead of bringing forth suggestions on how to win the war against the dragons, Evon Gnashblade simply tried to give alms to the masses. He is using the power of his company and company assets to try and bribe the people into voting him, as if we were dumb Skritt – by the way, are those filthy rats allowed to vote? – whose only drive is to “get shinies”.
He did this for a reason: While it might seem, that the lowered prices on keys might be good for the population, in fact, it will only benefit the ones, who already are wealthy. It will have some short term impact on Gem Stock prices and drain lots of money from the people, but in the end, all the money will slowly flow either to the wealthy traders, who can afford those transactions and control stock prices for pretty much anything or directly to the Black Lion Company.
On the other hand, Ellen Kiel brought forth some fabulous suggestion: Lifting the difficulcies, travellers face these days, when trying to get around. Because this is also, what will allow us defenders of tyria to respond to dragon attacks and hazardous incidenta at the reactor with ease.
Everyone faces travel expenses. But while for the wealthy ones, they are merely an inconvenience, the ones on the poorer side have to fear for their existence each day, because the fees are so high.
What Evon suggests, is some kind of lever: The more force, you can exert, the greater its effect. Basically, people with more money to spare will get more use out of it.
On the other hand, what Ellen brought forth, actually benefits us all AND the people of tyria. Also, the long term prospects of what Evon suggested, are rather dim. There might be some chance, someone gets lucky and turns from a no-one to having 1000+gold with a single flip of a key, but the effects will mostly benefit the ones, who don’t need help. In the end, nothing will change, while Ellen’s suggestion has the potential to change things.
While many back in Rata Sum will disagree, with what I say, I will still say it:
I honestly believe, other races are capable of thinking ahead, too.
What will come after we got our keys?
Will the poor ones be left in the gutter, while the rich ones amass even more fortunes?
We truly know, what we will have to expect here. We have to think about Tyria, not about our pockets.
My vote will go to Ellen Kiel.
-Peacemaker Napp
Let’s look at it carefully:
Protection: Hellish strong.
Swiftness: Rather bad.
Regen: Mediocre but okay-ish.
Blind: Hellish strong.
Cripple: Mediocre but okay-ish.
Confusion: Garbage.
I’d say, replace the Confusion with Weakness and maybe the Swiftness with Vigor and everyone should be happy.
You could also use D/P and S/D, id you are so hyped up for having that CnD.
Actually was theorycrafting about getting sigil of intelligence(skipping 100% crit on stealth) and setting up crit-backstabs with CnD -> weaponswap -> backstab.
It seems a bit complicated, but it frees up points for traits, which harmonize with non-backstab-skills.
Never really tried it out tho.
