I think the problem isn´t with warriors but with bad mob AI.

I wonder… what would happen if mobs wouldn´t just mindlessly stand there but …
melee mobs try to circle you
range mobs try to kite you all the time
mobs evade more

So what would happen if mobs were constantly moving? I bet half the warriors wouldnt be able to land their 100b.
And that´s the point. Warriors are only great at faceroll content and killing stupid-AI-mobs.

Just rework mob AI, don´t let them just stand there!
If I carry on this train of thought CC would also become much more viable… But that´s a whole other topic.

What makes you feel like a hero in games?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: nesh.7234

nesh.7234

The fact that sometimes you are so very glad to see another player and you think " not this day" and just proceed who wipe over whatever tried to chew your face off a moment before..

Or you’re seeing someone getting their face chewed off and think “not this day” when you come flying in for the assist.

^^
This

Also, being one being chewed and seeing friendly players jumping in and helping — for me, that added even more hero feeling than killing any of the “big” baddies.

I really had few epic moments when I or a small group was hanging by the thread and seeing rush of the players (sometimes literally) jumping in to help and in the end emerging victorious (or even failing) — that’s why I’ll always get out my way to help anyone I see in trouble / downed, and that’s why I think that’s whole “hero” feeling is community driven and (at least for now) GW2 has one of the best ones I was part of.

Tanks being tankier, dedicated healing class

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: nesh.7234

nesh.7234

I would rather it would not go to trinity. Ever. You can still heal as a heal dedicated character and you can still tank just fine using your utility blocks, dodges and piling toughness on yourself. I like not being forced into a role.

Toughness scales poorly, endurance runs out quickly if you like to dodge, and all blocks are associated with significant cooldowns rather than passives :[

you don’t dodge at random, you time your dodges, yes, there’s cooldowns, that’s why you use your abilities in an intelligent manner instead of spamming them. It also helps to learn the bosses mechanics so you would know when to dodge, when to block, etc.

The problem is being able to see the boss mechanics in the first place.

how is every boss having their own pattern that you need to figure out even a problem?

If you have to ask that question, it’s obvious you’ve never played a melee class in this game or you’ve played it solely in the ranged mode.

Particle effects make it impossible to see boss mechanics when playing melee.

Im sorry?
Say that again?

Never played melee in this game…

I have a thief…

I also have a dual dagger Elementalist, Do you know how close and in your face dual dagger eles have to be?

Yeah… if I’m playing squishy classes with low hp pools of their levels, I dont see how a Warrior with high HP and exponentially higher Armour rating cant survive.

Oh nice, you get wiped during a zerg, how sad

You do know unlike some classes you do have a weapon swap to go range if you get hit massively which could give you time to recover?

Seriously bro, learn to play the guardian.
Not hard.
And stop speccing, 30/30/x

LOL. You had to actually go back and edit to throw in the insults.

How sad.

Of course bro, because warriors are harder to play than guardian, mad respect to warrior bros.

You play a guardian one of the most durable classes in the game and your HP is only 16k

This tells me you 30/30 in Zerker gear.

Stop it bro, glass cannoning gets you killed hella fast.

Uh boy…“hella fast” and “bro”

Now I see what I’m dealing with.

By the way, you’re wrong about the zerker gear and my spec, but if it makes you sleep better at night, believe what you want to.

I was trying out Clerics gear, Einstein.

(too many stuff to quote around)

@Rizzy: guardians have lowest HP base so 20k(ish) is high for them

@Shootsfoot: 16k is a little low, tho i do see downed penalty arrow. OTOH I’m running p/t/v mostly and did not messed with other specs to much.

But I agree, a little more base toughness/armor difference may be needed (not in trinity sense tho), it’s still funny that light/heavy is just ~15% diff.

Particle effect can be nasty, I managing mostly by just monitoring my health and jumping away to ranged till recovering if I can’t track / monitor mob correctly — OTOH mobs, for some reason, love to stay on my tail but that coupled with fact that I can’t rely on “external” healing adds to fun (I mostly played tanks in other MMOs), at least no one can start QQ about not holding aggro

Back OT

Adding slightly more distinction between classes is maybe needed but trinity is NOT. GW2 is still young and have a lot of balancing and polishing up to come, so I hope “no trinity” concept will be even better as time passes.

tl;dr: changing only few skills/classes will not change much, maybe just FotM bulds — content/mobs/design needs to be updated to promote type of play ArenaNet wanted.

  • Smarter mob AI — (as noted in other treads already), and faster / more varied attacks from them (give mobs same skills we have)
It’s not “magic” fix for all of the problems, but will be a great start.
  • smarter aggro, and faster response time from mobs on it (without resorting to the old DPS based one)
  • … and make them evade smarter — which ID10T boss should stand while looking at 4 100b warriors moving in for the kill??
  • more “dynamic” in fights (or chaos, call it whatever you like)
  • much bigger armor/hp/tough difference, now is (IIRC) ~15% between light/heavy (in line with other changes) — “glass” builds should be easy killable (as in 1-2 hits) even by the normal mobs, ATM glass builds do not have much disadvantage for the lacking protection.
  • move all “epic” stuff (legendary, armor/weapon skins) to be BoA and require tough line of events to aquire them (time lock if needed) without RNG involved.
  • one target with ton’s of HP is boring, slightly lower HP but bring more tough mobs to the fight
  • “fix” every piece of content that even remotely have “speed-run” in them, gate, nerf, hit … every day if needed
  • did I mention that BiS items must be BoA and character bound?

GW2 PS4 and Xbox 720

Clock speed is not important on game systems. They have light operating systems and don’t have the same overhead—trust me that won’t need to do a rewrite. In fact, for the xbox they will only need to recompile.

…which is plain wrong. People are constantly overestimating what consoles can do, they aren’t magic sauce devices, all the laws of computing apply to them too. A thread requiring a clock of >4GHZ won’t automagically be twice as efficient on a console so it completes in time at a clock of 2GHz, especially considering the consoles are using rather weak (compared to Intel’s architecture) Jaguar cores. They’d probably have to rewrite larger parts of the engine to make use of the consoles’ advantages.

Maybe — but OTOH there is no M$ OS kitten eating cycles left and right so I’m pretty sure that on the same HW one can get much better performance, also consoles with their “fixed” HW allow programming nearer to the bare metal and that alone has chance to big performance boost.

There’s a problem with heroes in the open world. Imagine 200 guys all with heroes. Now imagine the lag. It’s just not reasonable for an open world game. If you’re really adding heroes, you’re going to have to make the entire game instanced.

Unless your game is Star Wars: The Old Republic or Neverwinter. Both of those games have companion characters and seem to work fine. The SWTOR ones are even customizable. Heck, I once played a free-to-play that was entirely built around the concept of companion characters. Literally everyone in the game had to have one out at all times, and it wasn’t instanced.

In SWToR were those companions all with you in the open world?

Yeah, that was kind of the mechanic. You could recruit companions as the story progressed, assign them skills, change their appearance, and have them tag along during quests, while farming, of course in instances, while exploring cities, and pretty much in everything but PvP.

Then they must have had fairly low map totals on people counts, or the maps were so big people weren’t anywhere near each other. Think about it.

IIRC (months from the last time I played it) it was always one hero out — and their zones did “fell” smaller…

Straits of Devastation event chains? I sure wish more people would do those, the beach landing in the north is pretty fun to play, just never enough people show up so we get pushed in to the sea all the time.

Thanks for the tip, I’ll definitely check it out

“Big” events should have map wide announcements (or even more “global”) that may help to ones like me who don’t care to constantly check “timers” to see where next one is happening (randomizing and much longer chains will be nice too)

Mega events should be epic

nesh.7234

And here in a nutshell is the problem. You don’t care what drops from them…and I agree with you. Other players do care what drops from them.

If you kill the drops, like they were before one of the recent updates, those events will get much harder, because no one will camp them. That’s how most of them were. Harder. And people complained about lack of drops.

So Anet caved and gave people drops. Now people complain about the events being meaningless. If you take away the drops again, the events will be harder again, but then there’ll be more people complaining.

I’m pretty sure by my memory, more people were complaining about the bad drops than how easy this stuff is now.

Yeah, I’m aware that (sadly) most people do them for drops … but with dynamic change and more map wide impact of the failure (keeping the drops) it may be at least more interesting.

OTOH I’d kill to have (at least) dragons much harder but with added chance to drop named/unique (to dragon) weapon for the class fighting it (BoP!) — that may please both crowds, and some type of titles related to them will be nice.

IMHO, 1st problem is scale — mechanic of the fight when one is fighting some huge boss needs to be changed. It’s just plain silly chopping of dragon with a sword (trimming his claws?), much better is fighting to make beachhead/protecting/supplying/whatever teams (across whole map) which will bring some type “heavy” artillery to the bear on it and, Zhaitan fight comes to mind (but with a lot more options). Every mega-event should be (at least) map level event not just on one small part of it, requiring multiple points of engagement and (to the some degree) coordinated teams to be done.

Scaling is second biggest issue — Orr is much better in that, mobs should be becoming much dangerous as numbers increase and also change tactics so groups needs to react better. Mob AI is pretty dumb ATM which makes it even easier — I really wish to see mobs moving out AOE’s, dodging, supporting each other… GW AI was at least a little better in that regard.

Make events fun, just like fire elemental was in beginning, don’t care what will drop from them, just make them FUN. Auto-attacking and (sometimes) moving around is not fun.

Also, no zerg should be able to finish mega-event bosses (event) in less than ~15min — Maw and Fire Elemental (IIRC wurm too) are joke now. Also add “lockouts” like we have it in Orr — want TP/craft/karma/whatever, free the city, kill the boss, … And more (or all) contested waypoints just to “force” people to actually work for the “privilege” to jump around…

And the point of an MMO is to get epic loot and pwn some noobs right? (Come on, you used to talk like that back in 2003-2004, don’t lie x3)

noob, nope. newb, maybe, sometimes.

Wrong game, wrong community for that type of thinking …

If you want gear progression, no — there is none, ascended being worst offender (and hopefully it will stay like that)

If you want to overgear and “pwn”/gank/grief “noobs” feeling 1337 — nope, never gonna happen (or lot’s of people will go away)

And hopefully they will keep GW way of not touching level cap trough the game lifetime.

As already mentioned in some other thread, having named weapons (and even armor pieces) based on some bigger champions or bosses will add a lot, don’t care about stats on them.
Imagine having (in your mythical home instance) weapon and armor display rack with items from your tougher fights and victories … epic.

And most importantly — please, please, do not change level cap and stats (ascended was enough).

This would be the situation that most people face. Their parents or some friend just put together a slideshow of their cat’s first hairball and want to show it off. You don’t want to hurt their feelings so you say “No no, I’m busy right now. Sounds awesome though!”. Then you realize “holy crap, they (or someone they know) plays GW2. If I log on, they’ll know I have free time! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!”

While not life threatening, it’s far more annoying than it should be and than any other game that doesn’t have such an… odd friends list would make it.

So basically it comes down to: “If someone you know snaps and is stalking you, you’re screwed because no game company should ever implement any features that could possibly help someone maintain personal privacy or security”?

That’s a bit… extreme. When the fix is to simple add a single option to be able to out invisible, instead of switching to invisible after logging in.

I’m not against adding option, but I’m against all of the QQ about non-problem — block will block all messages, and even if some persistent 1@#!# manages to find one in whole zone (did you tried guild bounties, finding marked NPC on the known path is a kitten with lots of people looking), what it can do — kill steal, resource steal, PK (well maybe in wvwvw if on opposite side but then just get some friends and return a favor), …?

GW2 already did a great job to prevent things like that happening.

About followers, I also have to people I do not know in it (or at least do not remember), but, I did not jumped on the “they are stalking me” bandwagon — more realistic reason is that most of them are people I was playing and having fun with at some point in time (event, dungeon, whatever) and they, as I do from time to time, added me to the list of people which are interesting to play with and may call first when I need more for something in game if they are interested and available.

Who cares about your character? They can see that you are on GW2 and effectively know exactly what you are doing at that moment. That also gives them a pretty solid guess of where your current physical location is at.

Only if one knows you personally and a top of that knows your IGN. It’s your own responsibility if one you don’t want get’s a hold on your personal identifying info.

A girl who plays GW2 with a violent ex-bf who plays GW2 and is stalking her and trying to catch her when she is home will likely be getting a knock on the door not long after she logs on. The only option atm is for her to just not log on, losing yet 1 more thing in her life she enjoys because the current system favors the stalker.

Then I’d say she (or he) has enough problems with that person already and RL solutions — safety is personal responsibility, get trained, dog, gun, … and deal with it (if you are in some normal country with reasonable self defense laws tho) or hire security to fix it if not doable personally. Stalking and bullying is “easy” fixable with proper appliance of (preferably excessive) force

I thought you were gonna suggest a system where you saved your armor and weapon skins in an in-game armory, for reuse any time you wanted. That would be great. It sucks having to get another of the same stat exotic just because you don’t want to lose a particular skin.

Then I remembered “that game”..

Anyway, I support my initial thought. :P

Agreed.

As top level stats are all on the same level, why bother — just like on the builder sites: its a just a piece of exotic 80 <type> armor and most of player will know what that means.

nesh.7234

It was an attempt to compromise your account via your email account. It was not a “hack”.

“Hacking” hasn’t occurred since Mathew Broderick’s character set the old analog phone in to the cradle and started dialing random phone numbers in search of a computer that would answer.

OK, let’s say that you should trust me that “hacking” (as you defined it) happens and it is not that rare

War dialers are just replaced by the crawlers/bots tho.

Accessing a game account or even an email account for that matter is the equivalent of Identity Theft or Social Engineering.

Identity Theft, yes, SE no.

SE is the “bread and butter” of the intrusion in other systems, one always goes after weakest link — human one, you’d be surprised what information people volunteer to give without too much trouble

People toss the word “hacking” around too frequently these days without understanding its meaning/origin.

<snip>

“Hacking” is blatantly accessing a single computer system or network directly in order to access the data or use the applications/services. So unless you are running WOPR to play GW2 or read your Gmail.. you weren’t hacked.

(added bold)

(correction for the correction)

Hacking (base definition) is term much older that most of the script kiddies, warez d00dz, … who “younger” generation call “hackers” (especially after that kitten similarly named movie with /only/ a good music happened).

Sadly term got “appropriated” by kitten clueless mass-media ;(

Using one’s GW2 account to farm/collect/earn IRL money can be treated as such even with your definition (no thermonuclear war option tho)

Just to be clear: breaking into and messing with other systems is above all immoral (don’t care about laws) and against a real hacker ethic — IMO anyone doing that should be publicly flogged. OTOH, for example, making a security flaw public in a kitten software is a Good Thing™ as it forces kitten company to act instead pretending that problem do not exists.

Phishing emails are “normal” (mostly got stopped by spam filters but some get trough) and as people already suggested:

AFAIK email was about that someone tried to access your account from unusual IP, there was a lot of them after launch but (at least for me) they stopped shortly after. There are a tons of bots on the internets constantly attacking/guessing and trying to get in — you should see my server logs — and yes, most of them can be tracked to China based IP’s which mostly means that some of the bigger bot-nets (“zombie” machines infected with viruses) are there, real attacker can be anywhere.

May I recommend turning on “Mobile Authenticator” from My Account/Security page — it has iOS and Android app’s and it will make it a lot harder for possible attackers to get in, even if they steal/guess password.

Also use something like LastPass to keep and generate secure passwords instead trying to “invent” one, you’ll be surprised how good/big crack dictionaries are today (browser stored passwords are also not that secure). Doing full AV scan also, lots of passwords get stolen that way too.

And standard “warning”, use unique passwords, only time I had problem (not for GW/2) is when I used same password for forum and account, also, never give your password to anyone or use it on any other site even if it “looks” legit.

The list above are adult subjects.

Teenagers should not be allowed to be exposed to some of theses subjects because their brains haven’t fully developed. A brain that isn’t fully developed can be confused or experience psychological trauma. Our society has deemed it prudent to shelter developing brains from certain types of material.

Skipping this one, most of the items are based on one or another “morale” standard and not on something real. “Exposing” teenagers changed levels and meaning too much to even have time to track them all down (80ies boobz/horror/comedy/… “teenage” movies for example). Anything else said on this topic will lead in one of the holy flame wars I witnessed from dawn of the BBS/FIDO/usenet times. (and vi is the best editor, fact!)

Politics, economics, moral controversy and scientific material are important subjects. Even teenagers can benefit from these. These subjects shape the world we live in. Not understanding them or being afraid of them provides little hope for making a better world.

Correct me if I’m wrong but we are on the game forum, talking about game … why one in the world want those “serious” themes in the game?! Or you advocate that we should add to the football (european) politic/science/moral stuff — well we have some off field, but why not in the game, it will make them so mature, so adult … and so empty (no time to work on the last idea but sound “interesting”)

As no one in this conversation has any real knowledge about “state of the game” we can just guess about it and agree to disagree.

Mature content = blood, nudity, terror, coarse language, violence, politics, economics, moral controversy and scientific material.

(edit: added bold)

Bold part sounds much more like teenage – (very) young adult dream movie/show/game …

One by one:

  • blood: yeah, right — people really want to look at “real” blood and gore (trust me, it’s not even remotely fun seeing it IRL)
  • nudity: (“Internet is for pr0n, …”) — nudity just because of sake of nudity is everything else than mature
  • terror/violence: playing games should be fun or I missed something — try it IRL and someone will teach you new real meaning of that … fast
  • coarse language: kitten, kitten, bulkitten, oh kitten, … my kitten, wow kitten … WOW I’m 100% mature 1337 guy (and I’m the one who can be very explicit when talking)
  • politics/economics: oh gawd no, never, ever — we have enough of those “types” IRL to have another batch in game (well in game we maybe can kill get rid of them … hmm that’s not that bad idea)
  • moral controversy: ?? (very, very broad), we hate them because they are <insert difference here> or “yeah, I can act as real #$%^@# in game w00t!”
  • scientific material: huh? Hard science? You want to travel 12hr to get to next place, be killed in one hit as humans are not that fire-proof, perma death, spend weeks or more to get enough material to make that leet sword, spend tons of time working to get finances in order to buy something … erm … RL (still) have better gfx and all of that in it. (and I’m long time fan of the hard SF)

To be clear, I don’t mind having things from the list in game (except politics #$#%) but it should be in because it’s FUN not just to call it “mature/adult”.

Why anything from above is called “mature” escapes me completely. And I do love dark/no win scenarios, but done right (sadly, very rare), not just created to get that (whatever) title.

BTW can anyone name one title who has above things which is not swarmed with “not very mature people” (deliberately omitted age as that is not real measure for it)?

Will Anet will open up the rest of the map?

The maps will open up when the level cap increases, if that gives you any indication of what timeframe we are looking at.

Why level cap increase?

GW had enough expansion without touching it and I’d really prefer to have the same in GW2 — level is just some random number (indication that one finally finished all of the tutorial missions) and leave that to standard grind-gear-treadmills and out of our game please

/back to topic/

I agree with previous poster that (IMHO and hope) they have at least one “big” (I can hope for the new continent) land/sea zone already in the late stage of development and preparing it for the next (probably next year) real expansion.

Hundred Blades, Pistol Whip, etc.
There are still many flawed selfroot skills out there.

Yeah, some of Warrior skills made me stop using it till I force myself to stop and wait animation to end …

LF Guardian is still very solid in high-end content.

But (IMHO) it’s not required — that’s the main difference.

Guess you won’t be playing ESO Or will be making your own class team comp around no healerz

Probably not, whole ES series did not had much appeal to me anyway…

ArenaNET: THANK YOU for listening!

Seeing this item in the gem store, with no RNG, meant an instant buy for me.

That’s how I like it!

Finally Understand who GW2 Demographic is!

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

:Physical age has nothing to do with mental maturity. On the one hand we have 50 year olds saying they love the content. And then on the other we have 40 year olds who hate it and (presumably) are tired of life. That to me tells me…it’s less about aiming towards a certain demographic but more about….certain people needing to just plain and simple grow up. You would have thought by now that someone who’s nearly 40 would be able to handle something different in a manner according to their age but clearly that’s not the case.

Summary: Grow up. End of Story.

How does aggro work?

in Players Helping Players

Toughness / HP do matter as I noticed that mobs/bosses tends to “stick” to ones with high toughness and/or low HP.

Also reviving (IMHO) is guaranteed aggro.

Get more aggro if high toughness?

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: nesh.7234

nesh.7234

On my guardian I found that combination of relatively low base HP (and keeping it low, not using heals till absolutely necessary) and high toughness made it pretty good mob magnet, so (IMHO) combination of HP/armor definitely has more influence than my DPS…

But, please, make legendary item bound (at least to the account), and also all of the mats required to make them — having legendary item should be personal achievement not “drop enough $$ to get gold” one.

And NO RNG involved — make us work for it, work very hard, but no RNG in that please.

let’s not mention TESO. I highly doubt we will have a fail nor something barely similar with TESO. And in case, fixed asap. Be sure.

Sounds familiar … hmm .. what was the last absolutely ideal, the best one … yeah, SWTOR … wow that went well …

GW2 has it’s problems, some fixes are not “ideal”, but it’s still one I prefer to play compared to others (I tried) out there. If I don’t like some aspect … i just skip it, or in the case of OP — make point to never run with groups like that, there is no fun in that and there are a lot of great players around to group with.

Rejoice Small Guilds! Guild Mission Blog Post

With no personal reward? I’m not going to get anyone to show up for that. I’m asking people to go through the exact same amount of work as they’d go through for a full bounty (more, in fact), except for zero reward.

(and related to other similar posts)

Above is part I cannot understand: if there are no individual rewards, no one will participate — somehow I think that’s the guild of people which should not exists in the first place…

I’m in (IMHO) small(ish)/medium sized guild so we can do T1, sometimes T2 (depending of people online) and even have a shot on T3 … why I’m/we are doing them? Because they are fun! Not for 50s / rare / whatever, that’s nice to have but even without that I’ll be participating because it is fun.

Now with T0 there is yet another fun thing to do and that’s great

Yeah it will be nice for ArenaNet to drop everything free into our lap and that we don’t have to work for anything, but (IMHO buying legendary is wrong too) … I won’t be part of the game like that.

Main difference, and one of the many reasons I’m here and not in some other MMO, is that I can play the game my way and still not be gated from the content I want to do because I don’t think that grinding one thing over and over again to get the item and then just start same thing again for another one…

Retribution is beyond broken right now [Merged thread]

in Personal Story

Posted by: nesh.7234

nesh.7234

First of all, I have no doubt it’s doable with a Guardian or Ranger, two of the most powerful solo professions. Second, there’s no pull strategy that can overcome the fact that you often get a dozen +2 mobs on you at once even if you pull carefully. These Risen run faster than you by a lot and once they catch up, there’s no getting away for every profession. Third, “resetting” does pretty much nothing. When you die and respawn, the courtyard gets even more full of undead as the Veterans continue spawning more mobs even if you’re not there. The quest is broken and a dev even said so. I’m all for difficult quests and I’m glad you had so much fun with it, but this is not the correct kind of difficulty.

Funny, I forgot that I neglected my ranger’s personal story and I got to the same mission — result … done without any deaths, even easier than with guardian…

It was just matter of timing pulls from ramps so you can pull one group and always concentrate on veterans only, especially on summoners. Also with a little patience and some luck if you manage to “persuade” your NPC allies to stay and fight on the opposite side, using one usable trebuchet can help a little (not much tho).

BTW … guardian, hmmm, maybe, but ranger is far from “most powerful” solo class
