Human female running animation possible fix

in Bugs: Game, Forum, Website

Still waiting for it to be changed back myself. I was told by support it was a bug, but then the last response I got danced around the issue. Still called it an ‘issue’, but it wasn’t clear if they were saying it was itself an issue, or if the issue was determining if it was an issue. :|

I think it’s terrible. It worked a certain way for 13+ months. Then changed. For no reason.

If it’s not a bug, I’d like to know the reason for the change. Be it a ‘values’ thing or what not. It would be nice to have an answer one way or the other. I guess our general post didn’t get enough posts to qualify for a ‘Human T3 Gem Store Item’ type response.

If they actually follow through and correct the issue I’m trying to champion, which I was told by support was a bug (though not fixed Tuesday), and doesn’t instead turn out to be a stealth push of someone’s values in my face (after 13+ months of looking a particular way), I’d happily make a thank you post.

I have a sad feeling in my stomach that I’ve been lied to, and my days are numbered.

Guess I can’t complain too much. I got to play a really fun game for 13+ months.

Why has female running been changed?

Yea, well, they fixed the bug with 2 handed weapons…

They did? I guess my problem is different, with the staff swinging around all over the place behind me.

At any rate, I was told the running change was a bug. So from that, my choices are:

1. I was lied to.

2. I was not lied to, and they are planning on changing it back, they just couldn’t get it in before this patch (though, it seemed to be pretty easy to break in the first place, if true).

3. I was not lied to, and they thought they fixed it, but they didn’t.

Regardless, no mention of it, outside of my source which you aren’t supposed to talk about in fight club. No patch notes. No developer blog notes explaining why.

So why not tell us? I’d like to be an informed consumer that can make a decision about where I’d like to continue to spend my time and money based on the philosophies or values of a company or it’s figure head, and more importantly, whether they feel it appropriate to enforce their own values on me.

I don’t think it is, but it may be for me. ‘One’ little change recently smells ‘funny’ to me, and if it turns out it’s not a bug and doesn’t swing back to the way it’s supposed to be, I’m out.

I’m not keen on having values forced on me.

But in lieu of my feelings on ‘the one thing’, it’s a fantastic game and I think it’s doing just fine. I hope I get to stay.

Regardless, if they changed it on purpose they need to complete the unfinished business and fix 2 handed weapons. Staff now has some ridiculous clipping when walking and that greatsword-around-the-neck bug is annoying as hell (don’t know why but its a real immersion breaker for me).

On a side note: I have to admit (although i rarely do that) that the animation looks good on my female D/D thief.

I’m still in the “original animation” camp. I’m going to file an in game bug report and let the chips fall, as they say.

I want to know if that stuff is permanent.

I’d like to know the why part, myself.

And if others have stated, there’s nothing to even notice and everything is fine, then why was it changed? ‘Someone’ noticed something, and somewhere there was a non-publicized outrage at ‘something’ that caused the change? Political or philosophical agenda?

I’d at least like to think, in lieu of an actual bug or mistake, that a change like this wasn’t made ‘for no reason’. That in a meeting, an animator raised their hand and said they were bored, and the response was, “Uhm, go change the human female running animation.”

I thought she looked goofy before. Now she looks less goofy. So I guess I cancel you out.

Each should be about choices and options, not about taking away something that was perfectly fine, and some people were happy with for 13+ months.

I’d ‘love’ for you to have your run. I would also like very much to keep mine. Why can’t we have both, and let us choose?

Of course, if you really cancel me out, then the net is 0 and then nothing should have been done. Yet, something was done, and I’d like to know why.

She … looks like she’s running. It doesn’t look manly. You guys have some really weird standards for “femininity.”

If everything was fine before, and she also to me looked like she … was running, why did there need to be a change? I’m not making an argument of ‘what’ her running should be labeled before or after. I know I liked it before, and it was fine and didn’t impact the economy or effect PvP/WvW standings nor provide anyone with any sort of game advantage.

It seems like an awful lot of work and money and time to change something that many of us thought was just fine for 13+ months.

I’m more angry about the principle of the change than the change itself (with the exception of the 2-handed sheathed issue). I would rather have the change back, as I ‘really’ enjoyed how it was originally. I suspect that will have about as much of a chance happening as getting a blu-ray release with Han shooting first or an E.T. where the FBI agents are standing around waving guns (instead of CGI walkie-talkies).

Since I am against making everything in the gem store in the first place; forcing us to pay for something that should be given as core gameplay is MOST DOOMULOUSNESS!

Not ‘only’ in the gem store, I just meant it would encourage people that have the money and already (maybe?) like to change their hair every month, might be inclined to play around with how their character runs from time to time.

It would be character customization trait, just like picking your hair, skin color, height, body type, etc at creation.

The only reason gems came up is like hair styles and color, another thing to change about a character that might encourage make over kit purchases.

As far as how to handle existing characters, I suppose they could just give everyone affected as soon as they introduce a new animation one free kit. Certainly in the case of the human female running animation, it would be nice to have a free kit and not have to ‘pay’ to revert back to something we already had for 13+ months, but there you go.

I just so desperately want my running animation back, I’d be willing to pay for it.

But overall, I thought the mechanic would be a neat addition to character customization.

Good call on this one btw. What is worse is that this change is a “stealth change”. If ArenaNet wishes to do something then that is what patch notes are there: It shows once again Anet cannot be trusted…

Indeed it is so…

At the very least, it’s not terribly collaborative. More akin to Greedo shooting first and walkie-talkies in E.T.

More importantly, a missed business opportunity.

I posted a suggestion on how they could have made lemonade with it, assuming it was intentional. All three parties would have won.

Seems like a missed opportunity, introducing running animation as a character trait.

Human females used to run one way, and many of use made race/sex choices based on that, and enjoyed our characters for over 13 months.

A change was made, which both changes the way the character runs, but also introduces a bug with how much 2-handed sheathed weapons ‘swing’ behind the character, and is visually unappealing.

The 2-handed issue (and hopeful fix) aside, what a missed opportunity.

You have the old animation, there’s now a new animation, why not make it something you can ‘select’ at character creation?

Additionally, add it as part of the total make over, so those of us who liked the prior animation can change it back? I would ‘gladly’ buy 1400 gems to buy a 5 pack to change my 5 affected characters ‘back’ to the other running animation.

People creating new characters can then choose the new animation or the old animation.

Down the road, you could add other running animations for other race/sex combinations? Maybe a noticeable limp? Maybe a Sylvari wants to take longer leaps like a deer? Maybe an Asuran wants to skip?

Missed opportunity at making ‘everyone’ happy, introducing an interesting game mechanic for character customization, and providing an incentive for people to use total makeover kits more, and collect more of our money.

Issues with character art, weapons, or armor?

Race: Human
Sex: Female

I’ll assume this is a bug, since I don’t recall seeing a patch note about this nor a developer post about upcoming changes discussing the change and why it was made.

The running animation has changed, and it looks terrible, to me.

While I understand some people like the new animation, without any discussion or patch note, it’s a bug, and should be fixed, as those of us who enjoyed the previous animation, have enjoyed it for some 13+ months, and possibly made character race choices based on ‘all’ aspects of the character race.

At the very least, the 2-handed sheathed weapons are ‘way’ off, and if there is some sort of political, socio-economic, values reason as to why the running was changed, there should be ‘no’ reason why sheathed 2-handed weapons should be swinging around wildly while running. With the old animation, sheathed weapons moved very little, with the bottom half of the weapon never crossing over the right leg while running (or ‘very’ little). Now, it swings across the entire leg all the way to the center, and it’s annoying.

Of course, having said all that, my only ‘real’ problem personally is the 2-handed weapon animation. The new run is fine, and honestly, that part of it I didn’t notice so much. What brought me here and what I did notice was my staff swinging around behind me wildly, it’s annoying and distracting.

I’m much more upset about collaborative development, and their seemingly child-like predisposition to want to take permanent markers to bedroom walls. I child doesn’t know any better.

But I pray (beg?) that at the very least, they change the 2-handed sheathed weapon animation that goes with it back to how weapons behaved with the previous running.

That would be a nice consolation prize.

I love it. The old animation really bugged me and I didn’t like playing my human partly for it :/ Way too dainty for my taste. So glad they changed it. An adventurer’s run should be tomboyish, not dainty. Looks more like a heroine to me.
Even if a girl is running in a dress doesn’t mean should should run dainty (and I believe it was impossible for human women IRL to run the way they did because it was so awkward). You don’t run efficiently when you do that. This current run is more efficient.

Some people like the new way. Some people like the old way.

The part I’m having a hard time wrapping my head around is this.

If we’re every divided on it, and clearly there are people that favor both, why not take the entire thing to another level and make the running animation a character option, just your hair style or color, skin tone, etc? Would that happen over night? No, but it could happen, if they put their mind to it.

Their approach is to strip something away from a group of people that enjoyed it, with no game or economic impact, for over a year. Since inception. Perhaps we made specific choices based on how it was, and enjoyed it. To completely change that without giving any sort of reasoning behind it, is just awful to those that enjoyed it.

Don’t get me wrong. I understand that there are some people that like the change, as they now have new options. Perhaps you specifically didn’t create a human female because of it, and now you can! More options, that’s great!

But what about me? 5 of my 6 characters, 3 of them level 80, were just drastically changed. I enjoyed how they were before, now I don’t. Is that fair to me?

I’m trying to stay away from what I feel this might really be about, because it hasn’t been offered as a corporate stance yet, so until that time, I’m not going to entertain it, but it’s getting difficult for me to not draw that conclusion.

I’d love a company statement on it, I really would. This is the way it was, this is what we’re trying to change it to (and we will/won’t be fixing the sheathed 2-handed weapon animation effected by it, and here’s why), and this is precisely and honestly why we did it.

That way, there is no speculation. There’s an honest answer from them about their stance and what they are trying to achieve and which audience they were trying to address. At that point, I can make any decisions, with clear information, about how I want to proceed and whether that philosophy fits with my own.

Well, that perplexes me? My characters seemed to look fine running before? What specifically was wrong with how they ran before?

The running itself, I suppose, isn’t horrible, the new one. It’s a little blocky for my taste, I thought the old one had a nice flow to it. But I agree, my biggest issue seems to be that staff swinging back across my body. The bottom should stay to the right of the right leg like it used to.

I’m still curious as to why it was done, but I suppose that’s not part of the collaboration.

One-handed weapons are clipping through forearms by just standing still. By the way, I like the new animation.

I prefer the old animation, especially with respect to the other issues it seems to have caused.

What is missing is understanding what was wrong with (aside from anecdotal evidence) it that they felt the need to assign money, a modeler (modelers?) and time to changing it, causing other graphics issues in the process? Was there performance issues? Is it the cause of the lag some people experience in big events? Was it impacting the economy somehow?

I would think in the spirit of collaboration, they would have a forum somewhere indicating possible changes, why they are thinking of making them (the why, always missing is the why with them), and give us a chance to weigh in. If I end up being in a 10% losing bracket, I would concede, and take my money elsewhere.

Which, I guess is on me. I should have been more wary about spending $20 on two armor skin packs to outfit a new character I created, supporting the company’s efforts to provide more skins through the gem store, knowing that at any moment, they would make a drastic change to how a character model that was wearing that clothing looked when wearing it.

I don’t know, it makes me sad. I don’t enjoy spending time in the world with my characters at all, they feel broken and look odd to me. Hopefully my $20 goes to something useful, I guess.

I will take a run on my sylvari and see if it does it on her. If it really bugs you, you might want to invest in the Kasmeer staff. It shouldn’t do that.

Edit: It rocks a little on my Sylvari, but not that much. Maybe it’s your character’s build? Or human female builds in general? I wonder if it has something to do with the shoulders or hips.

I guess the greater point is everything was fine before, and then they felt they needed to change the animation, and I don’t see them saying why they needed to change it. What was it hurting? What could have possibly been so wrong as to have an animator spend that much time on making the change, and introducing a host of other issues?

It boggles the mind.

I love the new running animation. It’s way more realistic. The whole stereotypical girly stuff is kinda annoying, as far as running is concerned.

And I liked it the way that it was (including fixing this broken staff swinging).

So what was it that made it change? Do you think it was really that there was a force at the company or in the community for a less ‘stereotypical girly’ run, as you put it? If that was the driving force behind the change, or if it was something else, I would really appreciate an official response. In the spirit of collaboration.

This is how it looks now, with the staff. The first step or two, the staff ‘behaves’ like it used to. Then you’ll see it start swinging wildly in front of her and through her clothes.

While I greatly prefer how she used to run, and would rather it changed back (and really have no idea why it was changed, and in the spirit of collaboration and disclosure and just communicating with the community, I’d love to know ‘why’ it was changed), I will probably have to live with it, and I can choose to stay or go based on the change.

The staff swinging around in front of me, I don’t care for that at all.

I don’t understand why they keep digging me with these little quality of life things that were just fine before, weren’t hurting anyone, and now reduce my enjoyment to the point of just not really being interested any more.

Well, I hope they change it back. I’m hopeful, but realistically, it looks like I got the short end of the staff, as it were.

Video

This is a great example of what we used to look like running with a sheathed weapon.

Granted, this is a Norn, but the same was true for Humans:

1) Our arms were down more naturally closer to our sides, not swinging around out to the side like we were speed walking or something.

2) Even ‘more’ of an annoyance to me is the effect the staff now has of swinging back and forth on the bottom so much. That movement is rather annoying. The video shows how it used to be, very little movement, and the bottom never crossed in front of the body.

Glad you asked, just got some help in PHP finding a video!

This is a Norn, but the same used to be true on my human. Two things.

1) When she’s running with a sheathed weapon, her arms are closer in at her sides.

2) Even more of a distraction is the ‘windshield wiper’ effect that the staff now has. I don’t have an ‘after’ video, but take any Norn or Human out for a run with a sheathed staff and you’ll see the bottom of that thing swing back and forth a lot. It’s distracting, and it’s fairly bothersome.

I could most likely get used to (1), but (2) ‘really’ stands out. I’d love to know why it was changed? I wish it was the way it was before.

this is what complaining about clipping brings, the truth is, running with overly large weapons and various other odd shapped items would require you to run in weird ways, so you can choose loook cool running or not clipping, yall complained and got not clipping, now you cant look cool.

also, i wish the devs had spent animation money/time on new skill animations (charachter movements) way too many skills use same movements, like bluured frenzy hundred blades pistol whip etc. Or you could just make totally new animations for new weapons/skill swaps…

Honestly, I’ve never understood the obsession with clipping. I mean, there are degrees, of course, and ‘bad’ clipping is terrible. But whatever it was before that made them change the running? What, swords in my clothes, or something? That has never bothered me.

I mean, when I put my staff away, it hovers behind my back. To me, most of that is a level of suspension of disbelief.

But the character itself has always been one of the most sacred things to me.

So I guess it’s a matter of perspective, with winners and losers.

Actually this was a bug fix. Before this change when i was running with my Female Thief the right Weapons was getting into the Armor. Everyone got this problem before. Reported this bug long time ago and now they fixed it and i am really happy about it.
Here is a picture so u can take a look at it:

I’m not opposed to fixing clipping issues, just not at the expense of making the character look unusual. If I had a choice between a weapon clipping and a character looking more natural, I’d choose the latter.

Thank you for the side by side pictures, it does illustrate nicely what is wrong with her arms being too far out.

But, it will be what it is. Just like the swimming plush griffon some of us paid $6.50 for last Christmas. I think the phrase used was ‘immersion breaking’.

So we got that going for us, running immersively, which is nice.

Merge Servers

in Suggestions

Posted by: notebene.3190

notebene.3190

I’m going to be honest. I’m very much against server merging at this stage.
There are three important things going on.
The first is that the game is alive and still a lot of people playing. Not as much as during the initial peak, but still a lot.
The second is that server merging is bad advertisement. This is picked up by the press (and feeded by competition) as a sign off weakness. It results in people thinking the game is trash and result in less new people joining and even emptier servers.
The third is that some people like to be on a quit server. They are there and they don’t harm anyone. also the impression off a quit server is often wrong cause people are just doing different things. (a WvW server would often be empty in PvE and a PvE server is often emtpy in WvW).

That doesn’t mean that there shouldn’t be a solution for those on a small server and finding themselfes lonely. My suggestion to solve this all would be to have more dynamic transfer prices. The price for a transfer would depend on how often you get one. The base costst are actually higher then they are now, but if you played for a longer time (e.g. since start) and never had a server transfer you get a discount. on top off that, if your server population is dropping you also get a discount. This discount on discount can result in a situation that a server transfer can be farmed within several hours.

I can respect this position as well. I’d be ‘happy’ to pay for a transfer. My issue is my personal guild bank. I spent a lot of time on building that up, and don’t want to lose it. As such, I feel like I don’t have any options, unless they provide us with some sort of mechanic to transfer that.

About the only option I have is to buy another game, and put a character in the guild on that server, and then keep perma guested to that server to use my old guild vault. That would be ‘terribly’ inconvenient, as I’m constantly moving things in and out of it. I’d constantly be returning to town, having to logout, then come back in after rifling through the burdensome guesting UI (you are guesting, are you sure you want to guest? [y/n] really? [y/n] last question, do you know what the word ‘hyperbole’ means? [y/n] are you aware as soon as you log out we’re going to stop guesting you, and you’ll have to do this again? [y/n])

Don’t get me wrong, I’d be ‘happy’ to move myself, and pay the transfer. What is preventing me is my personal guild vault and not being able to take that with me.

It does raise another concern, however. What if they add the mechanic to move a guild vault and accrued influence. What happens if enough people leave a low pop (excuse me, ‘High’) server that it starts a chain reaction and there’s like 100 people left? And then they retire the server and move everyone off that’s left? I guess that’s more money for them, since they got a lot of paid transfers before they retired it, which would be clever, but would that look any different in the media?

Though, I don’t much care about the media. Reviews seemed to have devolved into a lowest common denominator engine of sorts. I’ve been playing the funnest game I’ve played in a long time with one of the best development teams that interacts with the community constantly in every meaningful way you can possibly imagine, and it’s one of the worst rated games I’ve ever seen.

Merge Servers

I believe it’s impossible at this time and this is why I think so.

If servers were merged, I would bet that the way it’s done is that the old servers are destroyed and a new one made with the populations put in the new one. The people who are asking for mergers may have forgotten or don’t know that guild banks are tied to their server and can’t be moved. This would mean that the guild banks would be destroyed along with the servers. All the influence, upgrades, access to commendations and guild missions and items in the guild storage would be lost. Because of WvW considerations, a minimum of 3 servers, and maybe 6 servers to make 2 opposing sets, would have to be merged with a loss of all those guild banks. There is no way that ANet could merge servers without massive outrage from people didn’t want a merger and who lose their guilds and all their work on it.

Until ANet has the tools to detach guilds from servers and move them to another server, mergers will not happen.

And I wouldn’t want them to, because this reason alone is the ‘sole’ reason why I just don’t pay the fine and pack up and move. I’d lose my personal guild bank.

I’d like to think that when they decide to merge servers, that they address this as part of the mechanic.

Of course, they paid someone to make a plush griffon I paid $6.25 for not swim any more, after it could for 3-4 months, so maybe I shouldn’t hang my hat on anything rational happening.

Stop with the bikini armor

As long as this is about providing more options, and not motivated by taking away options from other people, then I can get behind your message.

Changing existing things is dangerous because people that are wearing it are, presumably, wearing it because they like it. People that aren’t wearing it are, presumably, not wearing it (and some would wear it if it were something else).

Would it make more sense to build the ‘something else’ in such a way as to not disrupt those that bought and crafted specific pieces of armor because they enjoyed it the way that it was?

Food for thought.

But yes, if this is about ‘more’ options and choices, and not about dictating what is available by removing other options and choices, then I can get behind that.

Mesmer or Elementalist?

I have a staff ele, my first character, and while I had some tricky issues with the story quests early on (and many have been toned down since then), I don’t find I die anywhere ‘near’ as often as my mesmer does, which I am still struggling with.

So I guess it just depends on which seems to feel more right. Hard to say if I had started another character first if that would be my favorite, but I do like my staff Elementalist. Tried the D/D thing. I don’t like that so much. I don’t even much care for wands and focus (foci? focuses-es? what is the plural of focus?), but when I used to WvW (which I don’t much any more), I would use it to protect things when I needed to. Staff is ultimately my friend.

I just dropped $20 on one of the new sets and one of the old sets and put something fun together with a piece from each and some odds and ends.

Queensdale
Kessex (before; now Orrgly)
Gendarran
Lornar’s Pass
Timberline Falls
Frostgorge Sound
Queensdale (yes, I listed it twice)

The Jungle areas and Ascalon are ‘ok’, but I don’t always like the lighting in the jungle and Ascalon isn’t quite my taste, but all are well done.

I ‘hate’ Orr. Well done, yes, lot of great work, appreciated on behalf of those who enjoy it, but I can’t stand places like that, which is why I’m ‘eternally’ thankful this game lets me hang out in Queensdale, if I choose, and help farmers and fight bandits in green, grassy fields and hills and sun and nice lighting.

Thanks. I guess that won’t be happening then, and I’ll just have to hope for a server merge some day.

I don’t suppose someone could point me in the direction of said document?

Specifically, with respect to a guild vault and what happens if it’s a single character guild, or a ‘few’ account guild, and no one is left on that server?

Is there any way to ask for it to be moved?

Sorry for the necro, but I’m sure this topic comes up a lot and didn’t want to make a new one.

I’m on Emhry Bay and would ‘love’ to be merged with another ‘High’ (I love that) pop server.

Could I move? I suppose. Would I mind paying the fine? I guess not. Would my guild bank come with me. No. And that’s why it’s not a very good option.
