Solutions for FP: New leveling system

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

I know that MANY of us are upset with the new leveling system. This is not yet another thread to discuss how bad we think it is, but rather to discuss SOLUTIONS for rolling and leveling alts. Many of us are extreamly put off with this new system and trying to roll an alt. But what can be done about it? Please share your solutions for veterans, yet keeping the new system for new players, if at all possible. Thank you.

Doing a complete roll back: While this seems to be the simplest solution, you then have the problem with new players (which is why this whole system is integrated), and no turtorial system. So IMO it doesn’t really help anything.

Including the turtorial as part of the opening sequence: This would allow a new player to get familiar with the basic controls, movement, attacking, dodging, etc. For example in the human opening sequence, you have to get to the garrison to help defend. Oh wait! Whats that!? The bridge has been trapped! Heres how to dodge roll to get past it. Earth Elemental is attacking! Heres how to target, how to use your attacking skill, etc. Now go out and have fun!
They can keep weapons skills locked behind leveling up, for that “reward” of learning a new skill. Just make it every level instead of every other level. (i.e. at level 5 you’ve unlocked all your weapon skills) Also class mechanics should be unlocked sooner, with a guide on what they do and how to use them. The UI changes, with the arrow and whatnot are fine, and don’t think pose much of an annoyance/problem. The leveling pop up can also stay, as it’s not a determent to leveling an alt at all.

General changes:
Remove masterwork gear unlock: As a veteran, trying to level an alt, locking masterwork (and higher) gear behind a certain level is kinda pointless. Some of us will drop equipment into the bank just to use for an alt. If we have a low level bow, that our mesmer can’t use, but we want to roll a ranger, there is no reason we can’t start a ranger, go straight to the bank and get better gear from the start.

Map skill points: There is also no reason for these to be level gated. As a new player and coming to one of these points (i.e. place of power) I am naturally curious and want to investigate. Hmmm says come back later….ok….Then I go off and forget about it. Instead include a mini turtorial, on what this is, what it does, and more information on skill points, and utility skills at X level. But still allow to get it.

Feature pack 9/9: feedback

OK! I really enjoyed the new game-play. I’m just at lvl 14 but I really enjoyed the trip.

I was really kittened about the Copper-Fed-o-Matic change (and still think is beyond stupid) but, since leveling is obscenely fast, I don’t see too much problem.

Of course, some changes are bad or pointless, other just plain stupid. But there is also many good things, small details/changes/fixes that make me think someone in ArenaNet really care for the game.

And finally, lets be honest. Most complains are from kitten key farmers. If they leave the game I can assure no one is going to miss them.

I haven’t noticed a change with the copper fed salvage-o-matic. What changes are you talking about?

Ok now that I’ve actually had a chance to play it my initial thoughts are as follows:

Pro: The new leveling system actually makes sense. Getting to level 10 was fairly easy and didn’t feel like a grind at all. The level up rewards actually made it feel like I was accomplishing something. The hints and tips, although a bit annoying, were helpful, but could easily be dismissed. The story not unlocking until level 10 didn’t feel awkward. The letter asking how you were doing, and to come stop by, felt more natural. (human story) The compass directing to the next heart/POI/scout made it easier to see what I needed to go without always having to check the map and see where to go. It flowed very well.

Con: As a vet trying to level a new alt. Extremely irritating. I know how to dodge, the main class mechanics were locked until a higher level, and I realize that I have different weapon skills, and don’t need to wait until I am level 9 to use them all. Map skill points being locked is lame, and not being able to farm nodes is just not cool.

Overall: The leveling could be great for new players, but too much for those rolling an alt, and kind of defeats the purpose. I think some changes could be made, especially for vets, and this update could be great for new players and vets alike.

Who would have known that people who’d been playing for over a year would care so much about the 1-10 levelling experience?

I know right?

Im going to try to convince my wife to roll a new character too. She’s a totally noob to gaming in general, and is level 9, but was very confused on how to do things. Hopefully this will help her get into the game a bit more. Ill collect her thoughts on the matter as well. As veterans we have a very different view on how things are, but someone completly new to the game will have a different perspective.

So voicing a legitimate concern about the dumbing down of the game is apparently not constructive feedback.

I’m now at an extreme loss for words.

What do you mean?

I started this thread for constructive criticism of the feature pack.so far its been very enlightening. I cant wait to check it out and post my thoughts on the matter.

This game is exactly like any other mmo now!

It seems that thats what the players wanted. At least here on the forums…Which really makes me sad.

Wow..really?
I thought this game was supposed to be different. This WAS great mmo..until this patch. I got impression from all trailers and interviews that this game is different and unique.

It WAS different and unique. And thats what made it great. But every other week there was a new thread about how Anet needs to implement XYZ because thats what other MMOs do. I guess they were listening after all. But I won’t know first hand until I get a chance to play.

There are several threads already talking about the feature pack and how it is. So instead of monitoring 16 different threads, lets try to consolidate them here. I have had a chance to play the updates yet, but am excited to check it out.

Right now I am having mixed feelings about it. Not so much the key farm nerf, or other mechanic nerf/buffs but the new level experience in paticular. The patch notes, and Wooden Potatoes videos make it seem like it’s actually a better system, with lots of cool things, but this thread (https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/gw2/Congratulations-Anet-1/first#post4381580) kinda makes me sad.

So what are your initial thoughts on the new feature pack? For those who have had a chance to play it?

You have just made my 6 year old son cry.

He was happily playing until the patch went down, running around chasing his green storyline star raining death on his enemies with his longbow ranger(lvl 6)
He logged back in and started playing then sounded really distressed and came over to me telling me his game was broken, about to cry because he couldn’t find his star and his weapon isn’t working properly because his last skill isn’t unlocked.

So friendly to new players. :<

That makes me sad….

Seems as some systems are having a problem with the new Coherent UI stuff. If you are talking 8p PDT then there may be a patch by then.

Didn’t have the problem myself but I just poked at it a bit and it didn’t throw up at all.

Yeah 8pm PST. Hopefully there is a patch up by then,

in my opinion, generally speaking… any guild that wants 100% rep is not worth joining.

Pretty much. I responded to a guild ad that required 100% rep and asked why. Was told it was to “promote a friendly and close community”. I said if I was already in a guild with friends, then I wouldnt be able to do stuff with them. Their “solution”? Invite them to the guild. And do stuff with the guild. Doesnt seem like a very friendly and close community if I have to either leave my friends, or bring them into a large guild in order to have fun.

My guild’s first alliance in GW1 evolved into the central guild trying to cannibalize the other guild’s members…. for much the same reasons. Within a few months, the alliance was effectively dissolved when more than half the member guilds broke off, and the central guild was dead not too long after. The power play was NOT appreciated.

Telling your members they can’t have a life outside of your clique is cultish. If enjoying your mates’ company isn’t enough to get me to rep 24/7, then forcing me to do so ain’t going to make me want to hang with you any more than I do already.

Yup. Thats exactly how I feel about it.

Skill 3 at level 4
Skill 4 at level 7
Skill 5 at level 10

No gathering, from what I read “at low levels”, so no exp (so no money from gathering for low levels). Skill point challenge sites not accessible.

There is a big arrow directing me to the appropriate level heart.

I’m going to level a char at least to 10, see how it goes.

I don’t think it’s entirely bad.

Also, they upped the quality of chest drops, so keep that in consideration.

Don’t forget the achievement track that adds a daily chest in your home instance.
And increased chance for tickets and ticket scraps, minis, and permenent contracts

So while it may take a bit longer for key runs, I think they will still be done, especially with a greater chance to get cooler stuff.

Kind of overkill just to nerf key farming…I kinda like the changes, although I haven’t been able to play them yet, but they seem really good. My wife has been waiting for these kind of changes for awhile. It was kind of a turn off for her, just being thrown into the game and not having much of an idea of what to do.

they dont tell you what to do.
they havent added any tutorials
in fact you can not do personal story until level 10
all they have done is space out the things you gained and gated more abilities behind levels.

Is this from playing experience or speculation reading the patch notes/blogs/forums?

From reading those forums, I think I start to get it. The majority of the people whining about GW2 are the ones who bought this game only for the PVE when it’s NOT meant to be a pve game. GW1 was ALL about pure pvp and Anet tried to please both ends with Gw2 but they failed (because pve in gw2 is EASY as kitten and has no challenge at all).

So you people should just go find some random solo rpg-like game if mindlessly bashing creeps is more your thing instead of whining about how the pve is boring and plain in a game where the PVP is the interesting thing.

This guy gets it right.
All the easy instances, the laugable bosses etc etc should be a hint enough to everyone that this game is not a PVE game. If I can steamroll a max-level dungeon wiht 3 people only by pressing a button then its not meant to be challenging.

This is infact a pure pvp game much like GW1
Sadly, you have to grind your butt through Pve to be good at WvW. and even PvP is now only available at, what, level 15 or something?! lol

PvP (and WvW) is still available at level 1. Just the icon on the top of the screen is hidden. You can still get there through a portal or hot key.

You want harder and challenging gameplay? Then GW2 may not be for you. I am not suggesting you quit or anything, but maybe revaluate this game, and what you are looking for in a game.

Also for harder gamplay I would highly reccomend Ironsword: Wizards and Warriors II for the NES, or Battletoads. These might be up your ally as far as hard and challenging content.

They said keyfarming was alright. Why change it now? This is horsekitten.
Way to be inconsistent as always.

It was all right.
Now it is still all right but more time consuming.

Nothing is inconsistent here, just unpleasant for those who farm.

Semantics. This is clearly a move to destroy the keyfarming.

Yes, and megaserver was to hide the dwindling population, precursor crafting/hunt was delayed to cause people to buy gems, the wardrobe implementation was to hide that there were no major WvW overhauls in the last update, and the cherry on top of it all? Living story is nothing more then a cheap money grubbing ploy to steal our souls.

/tightens tinfoil hat

Things are about to get heavy…..

Way to blow something completely out of proportion.

These are the same arguments that are being made (well, except for the soul stealing) about any of the updates/features that come our way. Key farming got changed due to leveling update? “They did it just to get rid of key farming!” Megaservers get implemented to facility more people beaing able to play together, and not stay grouped up on 1 or 2 big servers? “The game is dying and this is a cover up to hide the dwindling numbers!!”

Of course I was being way over the top. But almost every update, there is a group of people claiming that the update is either A) A money grubbing technique from a greedy company, B ) This will totally destroy the game, or C) Anet has no idea what they are doing. Or a combination of all three. I don’t believe that the changes to the leveling system was a deliberate move just to destroy key farming. If they wanted to do that, all they needed to do was remove the key as a reward from completing PS level 10. Not redo the whole way the PS is played out, the leveling rewards, and the way your character progesses. It’s like rebuilding your house because a lightbulb is out. Rather I think this is more of an unitended consequence.

However it appears we still get a key at level 10 as a level up reward. But as it was pointed out, it just makes it take longer, and is no longer cost effective. Key farming, I believe, has really just been put on hold. It’s only a matter of time before someone figures out how to easily power level to 10 just to get the key.

@filovirus

So if thats the case, why am I still seeing queues? Often the same Queue times as last year, when I was more invloved in WvW?

@Stilk

I never once said I don’t like WvW. As far as no experience? Yeah, not so much. It’s true I don’t get on WvW as much as I used to, but that doesn’t mean I have no experience. I still jump on, even if I don’t do much, on a semi regular basis, and still haven’t noticed a significant decline in population, enough to say that WvW is dying. Now you can claim Anet is killing their own game, by not doing XYZ, but any such claims only put you in with the other tinfoil hats.

Again, it’s a matter pf perception. I see no evidence that the game is dying, in any way shape or form, and actually see more evidence that the game is growing and doing fine. You can call me a “white knight”, blind, stupid, noob, whatever.

Is Guild Wars 2 dying?

in WvW

Posted by: pdavis.8031

pdavis.8031

@ Pdavis & EnemyWhatever

Five facts that will show you that WvW is dying (cauz we talking about Gw2 in the subforum of WvW)

Get a feeling from the devs that they make WvW more about successes and karma train than for good fights – tournaments and EotM are the proof.

Get a feeling from the devs that they make WvW more like a “seasonal type of gameplay” – understand that from the tournaments, when all the features for WvW came with those, and that as soons as it is finish you don’t get anything, not even bug fixes, exploit fixes, hackers ban or lag correction.

Get a feeling from the devs that they laugh at you hard when they call colors on commander tags BIG CHANGES, or when they say that they are exited about attributes on a siege weapon.

Play WvW a bit more (I don’t want to insult you both but I am pretty sure your experience in that mode is pretty poor) get in a teamfight guild and try to find proper fights – it’s harder and harder as guilds and players just leave the game around you.

Look on the WvW forums and try to find actual evidence of dev presence outside of what is called the “periods of acting” (just before a patch like now)

And now just for you #EnemyWhatever, how can you even speak about data when you don’t even bother looking for yourself? Here are two polls that took place on gw2wvw.net (I’m pretty sure you don’t even know that website) :

First one asking if people were exited about the WvW features of the September patch :
64% answered they were unsure to NOT AT ALL – on a total of 726 votes.
Second one asking if the player though Guild Wars 2 is dying :
56% answered yes – on a total of 638 votes.

So, by a third party website that I am sure many WvW players dont even know about, WvW is dying.

“Good fights” is subjective. I find a good fight is one where I dont die, or even a protracted battle. But thats not what everyone considers a good fight.

The seasonal tournaments, I feel are to give WvW players a decent reward. Something to strive for for holding maps, and killing zergs. Having somethinf like that continually would drive players off. The 9 week tournament had players stopping for a time because it got old, with the same match ups, too long to recieve rewards etc.

I feel colored tags, and seige attributes, a new traps, and golem mastery, are big changes. More coordination, more tactical planning, and a fundamental way we play. I feel it gives more incentive to try to defend, instead of endleasly flipping keeps and towers again.

And yes, im just starting to get into wvw. Only rank 39. But I still see lots of players, many of the same groups, everyday, at the same times. Havent noticed a decline in population at all. Although I will say there have been many guild transfers happening lately. We are losing one of our bigger wvw guilds here soon. But they arent leaving the game, just transferring. So while it may appear one paticular server is declining, another is seeing their numbers increase.

Don’t take this the wrong way, but how can you know what the populatiOn is now compared to 3 months – 6 months- 9 month as ago if you are level 39. The game itself is not dead, but wvw is bleeding players to eotm (not really wvw) or other games….

Fair point. But just like any game, or game mode, it’s not going to retain the same players for forever. People move on, get bored. Life happens, and people grow. No matter if Anet was going to release the most awesomest WvW updates possible, players will still leave.

My point is, while it may appear WvW is dying, I contend that there are just as many people playing as ever before. There are no real hard numbers to reflect that at all, one way or another. Every bit of "evidence"to the contrary is anecdotal at best. Likewise, any evidence on my part is the same. What it boils down to is a matter of perception. People are getting bored with a certain game, or game mode, and want it to be better. And the group of people they normally run with, also feel the same way. Some of that group stops playing, and moves on. The others continue to stay, getting more and more bored. A part of their group has moved on, thus less players, thus that mode is dying. People use the same logic/argument for open world PvE and megaservers. They implemented megaservers because the game, in their mind, is dying. Never mind it made the whole game experience much more “friendly” (in that you can always find people to do things with, even on a lower population server)

My guess is that these types of people (the ones claiming the game, or game mode, is dying) generally have a pessimistic view on many things, and tend to apply that same view on the game as well.

Is Guild Wars 2 dying?

in WvW

Apparently its been confirmed by wooden potatoes, the keys are still rewarded at level 10.

So I guess nothings really changed as far as that is concerned

Maybe :/

So If personal story doesnt start until 10, and a key is rewarded at 10… then you get a key at the start of the personal story?

The personal story is unlocked at 10. Meaning at level 10 you will unlock the level 1-10 story. I’m assuming it will start with talking to Petra (as a human commoner). So a ~20 minute run will take however long it requires to get to level 10 + 10-20minutes.

That still doesnt make sense. If the level 1-10 story doesnt unlock until level 10, then when you start the story at level 10, the steps 1 thru 9 would be super easy, as you way higher level then the story step.

I’m pretty sure that can’t be right. The Personal Story starts the moment you create a new character, and it wouldn’t make sense to just have new players be dumped into the open world with no direction of where to go and what to do. More likely you get a “block” of 1-10 PS from character creation, and then a 2nd block of 11-20 when you hit level 11. It just so happens that if you complete the 1st block and you’re still not level 11, the 2nd block won’t fire off.

Yeah I agree, but it seems we have conflicting information. Wooden potatoes confirms you get a key at level 10 PS. But Matt Visuals says PS doesnt start until level 10. I guess we’ll just have to wait and see for ourselves. Umless someone can provide confirmation one way or another.

ANET doesn't play GW2?

There was a dev post that said Anet allots time for them to play the game. And he said not inluding that time, hes lucky if he gets in 20 hours a week with family and other personal obligations. Ill try to find the post. But, yes they do play the game. Saw a dev the other night in WvW running along with our zerg. People just about had a heart attack.

Edit: heres that post I was referring to

After thinking about this I feel like many of you think that every dev should have complete understanding of every aspect of this game. And my gut reaction is to say that it is unreasonable to expect that from us, after all Guild Wars 2 is a huge game, and even now I am still discovering new things in it. And whether or not it is reasonable to expect that, it is not that I don’t have complete understanding due to a lack of trying. I mean sure I only spend about 20 hours a week on my own time playing Guild Wars 2, this does not include the time that ArenaNet sets aside for all of their employees to play the game, and sometimes it can be hard to get through jumping puzzles, fractals, WvW, activities, sPvP, dungeons, tPvP, living story, Hot-Joins, crafting, guild missions, ect with only a finite amount of time each week to play. I could probably cut more time out of playing other games, enjoying my hobbies, working to improve my programming ability, trying to maintain friendships and spending time with family to play more Guild Wars, but right now that isn’t something I am willing to do. So instead I’m just going to understand that some players are going to see problems that I don’t. And ask them for as much information I can so that the problem can be identified and fixed. And I appreciate that our players understand this as well and are willing to bring these problems up in a polite and respectful manner.

Laurals are not a terrible way to get money, but the could be better used for ascended trinkets IMO. But if you strictly PvP, then why not? But as a PvP player, you don’t really need gold so….

They should have Ascended minis first. Then maybe a legendary mini. But then what would be a legendary mini? As far as I know all the Destinys Edge minis are exotic and the dragon minis are exotic. Maybe a Lazarus the Dire mini? Or The Six minis? That would be kinda cool.

I am talking about the crafting mat chests. My character level is level 80, but I seem to be getting only lower tier mats.

as lvl 80 u should mostly get t5 matts, idk if uget t4, and a rare chance for t6

Thats what I thought, but I’m getting mostly T1-2 mats

Wait, keys are now locked until level 20? Looks like we now have a use for those dozens of level 20 scrolls now huh? :P

lol

Just lol

Ok maybe not dozens of experience scrolls….but experience tomes are fairly easy to come by….And it’s just a matter of times before someone comes up with a way to be able to farm this.
