Is Guild Wars 2 dying?

in WvW

I played Guild Wars 2 since release for about > 1.500 hours and sold my account a few months ago. However I´m thinking about getting back into it and bought a new copy a few days ago.

Sounds like someone didn’t read the EULA…

I know the playerbase is decreasing

I’ve seen the exact opposite recently. Has Anet released numbers to you that they haven’t released to the public?

and the megaserver change is more of an “Let´s rescue Guild Wars 2”-thing.

If by that you mean “quality-of-life improvement”, then sure.

Is it even worth to play this game again? Afaik ANet still ignores every thread on the forums

They read certain parts of the forums very thoroughly. There are a lot of senseless and unproductive posts that they have no reason to acknowledge (like this one).

(just saw a survey on reddit about the upcoming “feature pack”and pretty much everyone was kinda upset about it ). I just don´t want to put a lot of time into a game which is dying.

Reddit is not a part of the official GW2 forums, and most of the changes in the feature pack are due to player feedback on the forums. Most players’ opinions of the feature pack seem to be to the tune of “good, but not enough”, which I would hardly describe as “upset”.

Pretty much this. I still don’t get how so many people can say with any sort of accuracy that the game is dying. Maybe their group of friends stopped playing for whatever reason, or their servers WvW players decided to switch play times, or whatever.

I certainly don’t see a declining player base in any of the modes I go to. In fact I see the opposite. I see “new player help” threads all the time. See “returning player, whats new” threads even more then new player threads. Did my group of friends stop playing? yeah, all 5 of them. But I guess that means the game is dying, and the player base has shrunk dramatically to the point where we should start being worried….Yeah not so much.

Just a quick question about the reward tracks.

I’ve noticed I’ve been getting kitten mats from the reward chests in PVP. Do the level of mats dropped from these chests depend on your PvP rank? (I’m only at 17 I think) or should it be according to you characters level? (Level 80).

Thanks!

No way round it for legendaries right?

Just buy the legendary directly on the tp, no clovers involved.

Yes please!!! Spend about $400 dollars real world cash into gems, and convert to gold. It drops the exchange rate for gems, and everybody wins

As a warrior with full acended valk armor, and valk weapons, I love the valk setup. Lots of HP (i tend to look at it as an extra buffer VS conditions). As far as weapon choice, it really depends on what you like playing the most. I prefer Axe/axe for my warrior but thats just me.

Ofcourse you can select a precursor. Otherwise that’d be a 2g reward for completing a freaking ascended item collection.

Do you get gold for completing legendary weapon achievements?

No. No you do not. For 1 legendary weapon, its just 5 AP. I think 2 is 10 AP, but not sure.

The nerf is bigger than what everyone thinks

in Warrior

Posted by: pdavis.8031

pdavis.8031

yes the adrenaline nerf is a bit harsh, but its time to break Cleansing Ire chain surrounding warrior’s neck, for too long we were dependent on that trait.

I’m curious if the adrenaline change will actually make Cleansing Ire less attractive or not.

Currently, Cleansing Ire cures conditions based on Adrenaline spent, and one of the major mechanics that keeps it ‘balanced’ is that missed Burst skills don’t spend adrenaline, and so don’t cure conditions. Currently, a warrior needs to be careful on how he uses his burst skills -or carry a longbow- to maximize condi removal.

But if burst skills drain adrenaline regardless if they hit or not… won’t that mean it always procs Cleansing Ire? You’re still spending 1-3 bars of adrenaline, even if the skill doesn’t hit. To me it seems that would make the trait more useful, since even if you miss you’ll still purge conditions.

Thats what I’m thinking too. Unless they changed CI to only proc on a successful hit of an f1 skill, but I feel something like that would have been mentioned at least.

Cultural Mount List
Humans— Pending (I want to say a horse but those obviously don’t exist at the moment)

Humans—Centuars

Seriously though. Although it’s fun to think about, I just don’t think that it would work. Clipping issues, mechanic issues, server and model limit issues, excessive on screen clutter, and that anyone who didn’t have one would be QQing that they were way OP and needed to be nerfed. That and adding them either in game, or via the gem store, would kitten people off even more as it would surely be seen as a “shameless money grab” and prices on the TP for them would be about the same as precursers, which leads to “Inflation! Unfair! QQ, whine”

Yeah, just not seeing it happen.

A little research can reveal places where you can easily get at least 10 T6 an hour, with barely trying, and not a huge amount of MF.

Since heavy loot bag drop rates aren’t affected by magic find, it has barely any impact since that’s how most of them drop.

I actually got a majority of my T6 from regular drops, not in heavy bags. But heavy bags can and do help.

~snip~

The guilds that require 100% are the guilds looking for members to add to their family, not just a body to boost roster numbers. If you look at it that way, it makes sense why some guilds want 100% rep. We target players that are looking to make GW2 their MMO for the long haul and to create a strong community where players can thrive and build relationships.

The people that typically hate 100% rep guilds are the same ones that say the game is boring, there is no end-game, etc. etc. When you have a strong core of players that enjoy playing the game as much as you do, you never find yourself bored. There’s always something to do or someone to help.

I think back on every MMO I’ve ever played and the one thing in common in the games I stuck out more than 1 year was a solid guild/clan to play with. Every time.

I can understand that you are looking for people who enjoy the game, have similar goals as you, and want to build relationships, thats what guilds in general are for. However, I feel that a 100% rep guild forces me to do that. I have my main guild I rep 100% of the time, not because of some requirement, but because I have developed relationships and friendships with some of those people. I like spending time in game with them. If its forced, then how close is that “family”? Yeah sure, it might be a small sub-group within the guild, but over all?

If I was a new player, I know I would feel pressured and uncomfortable with being in a 100% rep required guild. (Actually had a guild invite in GW1, where they had a requirement to log in at least three times a week, and if I couldn’t I had to let them know. I promptly declined. Thats just absurd).

@berk

I got what you are saying, but i have to agree with filovirus. Its basically hindering how WvW works, and what makes it fun. Adding movement restrictions only just slows it down, a bit, only to be quickly overrun and destroyed by a small harrying force. Which strongly discourages a large group, and takes away the need for having a large amount of people.

I suppose the only way to realisticly implement my idea would be to have collision detection. Where You would be able to put your heavies on the front lines, and the enemy wouldn’t just be able to run past them to the lights and mediums in the middle. Or what ever formation the squad leader/commander wanted. It wouldn’t remove the benefits of being in a large group, amd wouldnt discourage being in a large group with slower speeds, debuffs and what not.

@OP

So you are claiming the price of T6 mats is only going up because Anet is actively discouraging farming, with the diminishing returns code, and having limited places to farm? (Just trying to understand what you are saying)

Well if this is indeed the case, why are T6 mats not effected by DR? It’s not that they are hard to farm, its just that there are fewer farmers. Look in the crafting forums. Everytime someone mentions farming, the answer almost always is “farm gold and buy them, its easier”. The players are actively discouraging farming. The same happens in game as well. The more buy orders are placed on the TP, the higher the price goes because its more in demand. Whilw gping for my legendary, I spent much of my time farming T6 mats, and collected most of them that way. And saw VERY few farmers along the way. Was actually made fun of by guildies because I was farming them, and was told to farm gold instead.

Its not Anets fault the prices are rising on T6, its the players. You want T6 for whatever? Do the work and farm them. A little research can reveal places where you can easily get at least 10 T6 an hour, with barely trying, and not a huge amount of MF.

Adrenaline = Life Force

in Profession Balance

Posted by: pdavis.8031

pdavis.8031

the only problem I have with lifeforce is the fact that they can gain lifeforce off of ambients in WvW. Then again I also play a necromancer and I am guilty of doing this all the time lol.

Even changing that would mean a complete rework of Deathshroud. Deathshroud was always meant as a similiar mechanic to soul reaping in gw1 (it gave the necromancer energy for deaths). It is supposed to become stronger with deaths but this causes massive problems for necromancer since without things dieing necromancer can be rather Lifeforce starved and with massive deaths necros have nearly infinite Lifeforce. Yes there are skills/traits that make Lf generation independent from deaths but all this makes Deathshroud a rather hard mechanic to balance properly…

I think you misunderstand. I don’t have a problem with Necros gaining lifeforce on deaths of PvE mobs, and other players. But from little fuzzy rabbits running around.

It makes sense though, after all little fuzzy rabbits ARE alive….

if I was gaining LF from hitting a gate, or a pile of rubble, something just isnt right there.

Right now people will aggressively put in buy orders. For example:

Player 1 Buy order’s a rune for 5g
Player 2 Buy order’s same rune for 5g and 1c
Player 1 Removes old buy order, puts in new buy order for 5g and 2c.
Player 2 notices, removes old order, and puts in 5g and 3c.

This is very tedious and annoying. Players just camping TP overcutting your order by 1c, especially when you want 100 and he wants like 3. People dont lose any money because its free to buy order. So they wont lose anything unlike selling.

Is anything being done to address this without reading all the notes? and in plain english?

I thought stuff like this was already happening? I don’t see that there will be much of a difference with the new TP UI. Everything will still work the same, just you’ll be able to navigate better.

That was the OP’s request: they want “something to be done” about this; they don’t want to get into 1c under-/overcut wars.

I don’t see how they could actually do anthing about it. Unless they removed the option to place a custom buy, or sell order. If that happens then no longer becomes a player driven economy, a far less effective gold sink, and might as well be an NPC vendor. Flipping will no longer be a thing, and everthing great and awesome about the TP would cease to exist.

in my opinion, generally speaking… any guild that wants 100% rep is not worth joining.

Pretty much. I responded to a guild ad that required 100% rep and asked why. Was told it was to “promote a friendly and close community”. I said if I was already in a guild with friends, then I wouldnt be able to do stuff with them. Their “solution”? Invite them to the guild. And do stuff with the guild. Doesnt seem like a very friendly and close community if I have to either leave my friends, or bring them into a large guild in order to have fun.

Wow….well that escalated quickly…

Lets try to keep calm. The way I see it is, while there could be some balancing issues that need to be fixed, doing any kind of major change to the way combat in large groups is done would: A. Be extremely difficult to implement B. Would actually hinder more than help and C. Probably isnt worthwhile in the end.

Now if there was a way, that wouldn’t be game breaking/take away from the basic mechanics as is, what would it look like? Would it even be enjoyable or possible? (Not from a dev stand point but rather a hypothetical) thoughts?

I’ll chime in and say congrats. This is typical of the Guild Wars 2 community as a whole from what I see in my daily rounds: Players taking opportunities when they see them to make someone else’s day.

The gestures are all different sizes, and it’s not about being able to attach a monetary value to the item given or hold it up and say that it meets a certain list of standards. The common thread in all of these is a player seeing that they can offer something nice to another, and taking the opportunity to do so with no hesitation or expectation of reward. It’s a great thing that happens constantly in Tyria. Thanks for sharing yours!

I can attest to this on several occasions some to me and some of the things I’ve given because this community is awesome.

Very early on in the game I was making a set of Corrupted weapons for my Norn Ranger, and one kind soul one day just sent me a bunch of Corrupted Lodestones to help me finish them off.

I later went and did the same thing for someone else.

A few months ago when the Lovestruck weapons came out I was talking to someone in map chat and we got on a conversation about matching weapons to armors and I offhandedly mentioned going out in search of one of the new GS skins. A random stranger sent me the GS skin from the kindness of their heart.

I later bought someone a Tormented LB skin from an extra ticket I had.

The latest thing someone gave me was a Foefire’s Essence GS and the 119g to get my T3 Sylvari Gear. I still haven’t paid this one forward just yet I am waiting for the right random stranger to pop into my life.

Other than those things there has been many a time I’ve been borrowed money, or taken on a run or other such things that I have been equally grateful for. One of my most fond memories in the game was when the Account Bound Dye system came out, there were several of us in guild that got a bunch of unID’d dyes from it and we spent the afternoon in Vigil Keep Map Chatting Dyes to give to random people it was so fun. And another fond memory I have was running into a new player in LA one day they messaged me about how “cool” one of my toons looked and we sat talking. And while we were talking I was going through my bank, I found a buncha mini pets, and some left over things in my bank and I just mailed them to them. They were so adorable when they see it. He even named the mini polar bear after me. So cute. And a final fond memory I have was also a recent one, I have a second account and I went on it to do a social experiment, I went around asking questions in map chats and various bits of the games pretending like i was new to the game and everyone that went out of their way to help me I sent gold to, there was one individual who went above and beyond with trying to help me, so when I logged onto my main account I sent them 150g and told them thank you. It was awesome to see so many people come to my aid as a “newbie” to the game as well.

Long story short is the community in general is amazing here and it’s so nice to see that people are like me in the willingness to help others when they least expect it. I know I was floored every time I was ever given anything, and floored more when I have given something out and had people be so grateful. It makes me feel good to make others feel good. and I cant’ wait for the next person I am able to put a smile on their face with a small gesture of my fortunes.

Keep it up, GW2 Community!

EDIT: I wanted to add in another story. in July the guild I was an officer in Boss Blitz Bros [BBB] was contacted by Mike Z. from ArenaNet to thank us for pulling the community together in support of doing the Boss Blitz event, and he sent us a Bonfire from the gem shop so we could have an extra Karma Bonfire at our Blitz =) I remember talking to Mike Z for a good hour or so after that. It was the most cool thing from a dev I’ve ever seen in a game and it was a topic of conversation for days afterward in our TS. RIP [BBB]!

That. Is. AWESOME!!!

Yeah there are a bunch of really cool people out there!! Just got to take some time to get to know them

Congratulations!

As for me, I wouldn’t have felt proud or felt like I accomplished something if I was just gifted that thing. Like, one of my guildies gives out precursors for a guild event she organises every now and then… but I don’t feel like getting it in such a way would actually make me happy.

Still, congratulations

RNG from the forge or a drop is the only way to get precursors for now anyway, Someone could potentially get on on the first world boss they ever kill. To me, getting a precursor as it stands isnt an accomplishment, its pure luck.

But anyway, grats to the OP.

I agree with you. It is all about luck. If I played today and haven’t gotten a precursor, I said, “No precursor yet. Oh well, maybe another day I will get lucky.” I’m not griping about it at all. Maybe one day, luck would be on my side to get one. Who knows what GW2 have in store for me.

It is all about fun and enjoying helping new players.

For me it doesn’t lessen the feeling of having completed a goal. I suppose one could look at this as another form of RNG. Either way it was luck. Amd for that I am grateful and happy. But yes, its all about having fun and helping players. And thats what makes this community so cool. There are so many nice, friendly and helpful people all over the place.

Fact2: cloth can only be obtained by salvaging light armors

Incorrect.

Ok you can get them from bags as well but it requires rng. Unlike salvaging where you can get it constantly.

My point still stands that light armor will be the only class that gets the benefit of this change not only that it will overshadow other classes’ farming income.

Not to mention ores can be mined by every class as well.

RNG bag drops are also not the only way to get cloth. Map completion also awards quite a bit of cloth.

I just came back of over a year absence. I left with all my toons at 400 max crafting. Logging on I see max is 500. no problem I’ll hit this off real quick once I remember how…..I thought

so help me make sure I am on the right track.
1. at lvl 425 everything is grey (i must discover)
2. To discover i need the 2 pieces of mat (NP I have tones of the helm ones I uesd to get to 425)
3. I also need insignis’a (I remember those, 5 of: bolts Gossemer, vials of P blood, Gobs and 20 spools) to buy all on Market 6 Gold, I think.
4. Now discover and repeat with all insiginas (o’ya buy them with karma)

Now I did this once and I got 3 levels. I have to do that 25X? to get my last 75 levels! 150G to buy mats alone. And not that many insignias types to discover with.

Have I Missed Something? please any advice?

http://www.guildwars2hub.com/crafting

Thats basically it. But you get the most EXP from discovering recipies that are not already on your list. These guides have helped my to level my crafting professions quickly. Yes, it is expensive, but ascended gear (craftable at 500) is totally worth it IMO. Good luck!

A lot of people put a lot of work into the new TP and they deserve to get some airtime to talk about their work. I’m no expert on UI by any means.

I am excited about the new buying and selling UI the most. It’s designed to reduce information asymmetry (it’s designed to give all users easy access to more information) and I think it will be really helpful for new players or players that are less studied on prices.

Well since your not spending time on the podcast, you should test the new TP UI by taking say 200g-500g and challenging yourself to make as much profit as possible in a week (use every dirty trick you can think of to squeeze out a profit, your also testing how the market reacts to super secret commerce stuff). Post your results at the end of the week and gloat how you just emptied the market of thick leather sections(which at more than 10k gold would be insane).

This is a funny idea, but I don’t think it would endear me to the general population (or my community team).

Since when did economists care about making friends?

Notice he didn’t say friends…but the general game population, and the people he has to work with…. :P

did they donate or was it an exchange to avoid the grueling rng and trading post prices?
if it’s the former, i’m a bit appalled you would allow someone to gift you an 800g precursor rather than immediately pressing the ‘return to sender’ button in the mail tab

It was a donation yes. The “transaction” (if you will) was discussed several days in advance before the actual item was sent. The sender say a post of mine discussing precursors, and was impressed that I wasn’t raging or QQing about the prices or RNG but was actually seeking ways to best work toward buying it combined with using the mystic forge. They were leaving the game, as were looking to donate most of their stuff. I wasn’t asking for a handout, nor expecting one. It totally came out of the blue. If they were looking to give it away, and were picky about who got it, of course I am going to accept it. To do otherwise would be an insult to them. Why should I deny the giver the chance to be blessed by letting my pride get in the way and not accept such a gift?

Real life story. Several years ago, there was an older man at my church. One sunday, he came up to me, and pressed $100 dollars into my hand, and said “I was asked to take care of you. Hope this helps.” Then turned around and left. A couple of weeks later, the same thing happened. And again another couple of weeks. Of course I thanked him profusely each time I saw him. But seeing the sheer joy on his face as he gave me the money was worth accepting his gifts each time. While I received a couple of hundred dollars, I strongly believe that he still got the better end of the deal.

If someone wants to randomly give something to somebody, no strings attached, but just wants to be a positive influence in their lives, even just for a short moment, that is great!! I’m not going to stop them. Far be it from me to deny them that chance. I don’t feel accepting this gift in anyway makes me a “mooch” or “less of a man” or anything. I think it takes more to accept something like that, than it does to reject it. But thats just me.

Why should I roll an engineer?

Ok I am looking for a new character profession. I already have an 80 warrior, 80 necro, and 67 ele. I am looking to roll up a medium armor character. But am not sure if engineeer or ranger at this point. Although I am leaning toward an engineer. Some of my concerns are: How usefull in a group? Is the learning curve difficult to pick up? What exactly are kits and how are they different from weapons? Will I instantly be hated by all (like a ranger) simply for being an engineer?

Thanks!

Okay, I was frustrated before, so I didn’t explain the story properly.

I bought a bunch of Silk off TP to refine and sell for a higher price. I managed to refine a lot, but in the process, I had bought more. However, instead of refining those Scraps into Bolts, I had accidentally refined Bolts into Coat Linings, since I got mixed up when I saw both allowed me to craft over 1,500 in quantity.

As a result, I used Craft All on the wrong option. Worst thing to come back to after breakfast..

Lesson: Double check before using Craft All.

(If for some reason people think I’m lying, I can screenshot my buy/sell history)

Actually that makes sense…and it sucks. I don’t think you are lying, but the first post gave too much inconsistant information, which lead to that conslusion. After the explaination it seems much more reasonable that that happened. Sorry dude. Hopefully the new crafting UI will help avoid some of those issues for other in the future.

Yeah, been seeing a lot more tags on in PvE then ever before. I just find it silly. However in WvW, there is still only a few. With the different commanders doing different things, one havoc tag, another defense tag, and a large zerg tag. Yeah it’ll fade after the 9th, when people get bored of just staying tagged up and go back to normal.

Wizard's Tower In Kessex Hills. New dungeon?

It actually was never anchored. It was chained to some other floating blocks.

And there was a White Mantle necromancer after “powerful tomes” in the tower as part of the War in Kryta bounties.

And we do know hints of Galrath’s history – he held some fame and affiliation with the Lionguard.

Fun fact about the theories about Isgarren having necromancer and elementalist knowledge… We met a powerful spellcaster who is seen at one point as a necromancer, and later on (timeline wise) as an elementalist… That’s right, Lazarus the Dire.

Wait…so Lazarus fled to the mists, but returned as the mysterious wizard!?

Also @OP

They don’t really look so similar that it could easily be mistaken.

Edit: Silk coat linings are also selling for 36c. The buy order is 10c.
I am confused as to what actually happened, and am curious as to the whole story…

Really? Gonna go with the “evil little brother”, defense?

Not sure I care what happened, but I’m 99% sure it didn’t happen like the OP portrayed it.

Not so much of a defense but more of a “there is 0% chance of it happening like you said it did, and you are not telling us everything.”

Either way, I find the “evil little brother” explaination much more humorous :P

I totally agree!!!

I’ve decided not to post their name here (not only due to posting name restrictions) but to let them continue to silently accept the honor rightfully due to them. But the devs can certainly find out who they are and perhaps hook them up?

This is a great thread. I have some gripes about GW2, but one thing I’ve always liked about it—more than any other MMO—is that GW2 tries to encourage players to work together. Grats! And thanks for posting this.

You’re welcome!! and thanks!!

I am glad I can help shine a bit of light into the seeming darkness on the forums with all the rage and QQ.

Maybe he did craft the bolts of silk, and while they were crafting (it would take forever to craft that much) he was afk, and wasn’t paying attention. Then his little brother came in, saw the crafting was done, and then proceeded to craft all the silk coat linings. OP comes back and discovers instead of bolts of silk, he now has coat linings, and thinks it was an accident. Meanwhile his little brother is laughing at him while he rages.

This sounds much more plausible than accidently making a bunch of silk coat linings that he needed to bolts of silk for.

@LordByron

  1. “a common thing you hear in this game (in the game itself not in the forum) is you win GW2 by playing the TP.”
  2. “And TP flipping is seen as the only way to get access to BiS items and shinies.”
  3. “Just send a GM (without the anet tag possibly) to discuss economy with any WWW or Dungeon/fractal player with a reasonable amount of achievement points.
Then do the same with new players (not newbies, but someone that has a lvl 80 character and face the problems of gearing up).”

I am interested in this discussion.

First I would like to make some comments on the highlighted protions of your post.

1. I think that really depends on the group of people you are talking to. In my guild we have a couple of people who flip the TP, yet its still not generally thought of as “winning the game” even by the flippers. They do it because they enjoy it, and like that aspect of the game. Other mainly do dungeons, or WvW, and feel that being able to solo arah, or take a garrison with a 5 man havoc group, is “winning the game”. So in the end, it’s more of a matter of perception, than TP flipping actually being the only way to win the game.

2.Again this largly depends on who you are talking to. However, it is impossible to get the BiS gear solely by flipping the TP. You can buy legedaries, yes, but those are not the only BiS items. The next step down is ascended, and the only way to get that is to farm and craft. You cannot buy everything you need off the TP.

3. Gearing up a level 80, isn’t that difficult or time consuming, and can be done entirely outside of the TP. Dungeon gear is what, I feel, a majority goes for when gearing up a level 80. It has almost all stat combos, and is on a equal level with every other piece of exotic gear. Ascended gear does have a small increase and, again, cannot be purchased off the TP.

Also, as John eluded to, TP flippers can only make a finite amount of money. This isn’t the only way to play the game, I have known people who have thousands of gold, and never once flipped the TP. They earned it by playing the game, and not spending money when they didn’t need to. (Of course precursor drops really helped out.) In the end, you shouldn’t feel compelled to play the TP just to “win”. Just play the game and have fun.

I highly doubt this castle will become a dungeon. If you look on the map you will see the castle is quite small. It would probably be a 5 second dungeon where you just walk in kill a boss and walk out.

Maybe, but there could be a portal to a dungeon inside the tower. Which would make much more sense…
