According to colin they are more people PvPing now that ever before. The leaderboards only show people that care to leave hotjoin, which a lot don’t.
They include WvW in the “pvp” population. In prime time, just in hotjoin there may be 5-10 full servers. That’s it, 5-10 full servers during prime time with 10 minute queues.
Except that he wouldn’t have said it in a PvP ladder thread, so unless you can read minds or have more information, why don’t you show where in this quote it says it includes WvW. Let me remind you, that they was nothing added in WvW in december that would have driven up the player numbers unlike sPvP.
Here is the quote and link. [url]https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/pvp/pvp/Collaborative-Development-Ladders-Seasons/page/3#post3699860 [url]
I will add a fun fact: When rewards were updated in December, PvP saw a 40% growth in player numbers that has stayed solid ever since, the largest single jump in player participation in any game content type as a result of an update we’ve ever seen. This growth was almost entirely players who didn’t play PvP before, who suddenly became interested once it was rewarding, and I’d argue it’s not even that rewarding yet. To discount rewards as meaningless might be true to you as a player, but we consistently hear very different feedback from other players, and they make this very clear in their actions. We need to make sure players who truly care about prestige and being the best are catered to, and we need a way for players who aren’t that yet can become excited and invested and someday potentially become part of the first.
This would be the part where you show your work. Admittedly, the ever before part might have been from somewhere else.

If I were to speculate on anything, it would be that the march 18th patch is going to be somewhat small and that anything of real consequence will come in the patch after that.
Not to be that guy, but everything you said is not speculation it is exactly what they told us was going to happen months ago.

For most people no, because they are probably setting their expectations to unrealistic levels.

Personally I think decap engis are totally in line with the conquest mode of PvP as we have today. The game revolves around taking and holding points. The decap engi is the distillation of this philosophy. There’s no way around it other than to introduce new game modes.
Of course, the counter to the decap engi is the perma stability guardian who has plenty of options to remain exactly where they are. This is another build that is the natural consequence of conquest mode.
Are we surprised?
I dunno nerf it? Introducing a new game mode is going to introduce new problems and they will probably be slightly worst.

Monthly basis is not 100% feasible right now like it was before.
PvE had (useless) monthly updates for 1 year
Speak for yourself. Those updates are awesome for people that do both modes.
Also PvE is the breadwinner of the family, it gets more love and stuff.

Then again, who will trust you with 50+ million to build a game?
I’d have made the best stripper simulator on the market with that budget.
Unless you have physical feedback, why would anybody play that when in less than 20 seconds I can get access to all the “stuff” I want for free. Even stuff that the ESRB wont allow in a rated M game. (obvious it was just for jest)

Arenanet pretty much dug themselves into this problem with spvp.
The problems why guild wars 2 will probably never be balanced.1. No trinity
Congratulations of all the pro trinity post, your post take the cake for the “best” attempt at justifying a brain dead system aka trinity.
The lack of trinity has nothing to do with why balance is bad.
Terrible balance exist because the developers don’t seem to know what to do with the game’s combat system or half way through the development decided to do something else.
You can see the lack of clarity in the game’s combat system when you look at the staff elementalist versus other classes in the game.
Trinity HAS and will NEVER be a reason why a game is balance or unbalance.

I think GW1 had even more customization than GW2 and that game was balanced amazingly.
GW1 had way less customization on the stats front. But a huge amount more in skill choices.
The comparison stops here.
And GW1’s balance was completely broken btw. It was ok until factions, then it got bad, and then it got even worse. Why? Because they added too many skills instead of making the old ones useful.
+ GW1 was a full scale cooperative game, everyone had a specific role, and GW2 went on a solo scale, which means that even though a good team with a lot of interactions is great to watch, just force them to split them up and if they are bad in 1v1 or 2v2, they’ll just lose.
TL;DR: don’t compare GW1 and GW2, the games are completely different, and GW1 was NOT well balanced.
Guild wars 1 had a lot of copies of the same skills but weaker or broken. Out of the hundreds of skills only very few were either terrible or OP, guild wars 1 only advantage was that everything got nerfed to the ground every single month, unlike this game where apparently reducing a skill by 8% is suppose to be a nerf.

Let’s be clear anet. Evasion is immunity. There is no counter to it. Maybe try and not put 1.5s immunity on a thief skill which is spammable? In fact you put such an OP thing on every weapon set and they are all criminally under costed. Pistol whip should cost 10 initiative and the shortbow evade should be doubled at least too. And withdraw shouldn’t have an evade.
And AR, diamond skin, berzerker stance are joke too.
I see get rid of all the hardcounters against your main class. Got you. Just for the record I hate all of those things, but I hate cheap conditions even more.

Actually the Glory boosters will not be in the loot tables anymore, so their spot should be filled by something else then.
Unless you have evidence to support your claim, I will say don’t don’t say anything.
I see Anet making us destroy our boosters, I don’t see Arenanet adding more stuff to a defunct loot.

Dictatorship is a good way to describe the moderation on this forum. It’s a good indication of how they deal with criticism and their (un)willingness to own up to their own mistakes. Just give infractions to anyone who disagrees with you! It gives me little hope that they’ll ever fix PVP and give us balance patches that don’t take months to come up.
I mean for crying out loud. I took a year break from this game and came back recently and found that very little has changed and that there’s only been a few balance updates since I last played!
Dictatorship is a great way to describe the moderation, IF you don’t know what dictatorship actually means. hint a dictationship wouldn’t have allowed this or any thread that criticizes the game to continue.
Have moderation crossed the line once in a while, maybe. But I like the moderation here because it forces people to behave in a more respectful way. I wish more forums were moderated like this, maybe players would be more respectful including myself.
Also admitting mistakes doesn’t really mean much in a long run, it might provide temporary comfort to those that demand it but it doesn’t do anything other than that. Admitting mistakes doesn’t fix problems, fixing problems fixes problems and their actions sometimes show they know the game has issues, lots and lots of it.
When someone says “dictatorship” they don’t mean it literally. There IS something called figure of speech. Also, there are plenty of threads that have gone on for a bit and then were deleted. Just because a thread exists doesn’t mean ANET allowed it. So your example here is not really valid.
And I find it funny that you claim that people are more respectful because of the moderation when I find that your posts are thinly veiled condescending posts. Just look at the first line of your post.
TIL about figure of speech.
Just because a thread exist doesn’t mean anet allow it.
That statement contradicts the point you are trying to make. The simple fact that a thread exist means Anet allows it, even if they don’t like the content of it.
Being respectful doesn’t mean I am not going to be condescending, It means I don’t get to throw personal insults at you. Finally, my comment said “more respectful”, which is relative to other forums.
Oh man, those mental gymnastics. But I’m not going to debate you on what is and isn’t respect since ANET has their own idea of what that is and hand out infractions like candy based on it. It doesn’t matter what you or I consider to be respect.
Also, I direct you to the thread called “Removal of Glory”. It was removed only 7 hours ago because it “violated” the guidelines of what “good” feedback was. I’m sure it was up at least for the whole weekend. So just because a thread exists right now, doesn’t mean ANET is allowing it because of the goodness in their hearts. I’ve seen posts that still exist where the post is calling someone an idiot. It doesn’t mean ANET allows such personal attacks. They simply might not have gotten around to it or even know about it. Just because someone might have gotten away with something doesn’t mean ANET is really laid back and is accepting of criticism. That’s my whole point but you seem incapable of understanding it.
NOt to continue this pointless argument any further, but like you said that thread existed over the WEEKEND, anet officially doesn’t work during the weekend; some choose to post during that time but most don’t. This thread has been going on for a full week, so you really don’t have a point.
As for accepting criticism, I really can’t comment on that but neither can you. Just because they don’t go with populist idea doesn’t mean they don’t accept criticism, sometimes they do and sometimes they don’t. Not all ideas or criticism presented in this forum is good, they are a lot more crap than good and most of the good requires a lot of changes that most companies probably wont put in the resources for, especially for a dying or dead game mode.

I agree with the premise that guild wars 2 balance is terrible, but the solution you offer will not work in a MMORPG.
I think the best possible thing for Anet to do with respect to balance is to completely divorce the trait system from stats. Originally, when the trait system was introduced it was based on the premise that the traits could change the way skills behaved, except that that is rarely true of most classes.
I think anet will be best serve to borrow the trait system from Blade and Soul (that is the only MMORPG that I have played that uses such a system). Here is the skill simulator for the game [url] http://bns.duowan.com/zt/jnjd/index.html [url] basically you get skill points and every major skill can be changed to give it a new effect, whether increase damage, cripple, turn something into an AOE etc. So in guild wars 2, it could be done based on weapon and or ultility skill type or even the current trait system, but without the stat increase.
Effectively, stats only will come equipment which will minimize a lot the difference between bunker and damage. Ofc, certain classes will have to be adjusted to take into account the lack of extra hp fro
To sum things up for people who do not want to read:
- Gw2 imbalance comes from the lack of punishment associated with most abilities
- With no punishing elements present the result is spam and mindless playing
- Abilities that have some form of punishment associated with them are perceived as weak.
- Many combat mechanics in game have no polar opposite to counter them i.e evade, stealth. Which leaves these mechanics to go unchecked.
- Building upon how the negative element (punishment) is missing in game. One can see this pattern with little things like skills with instant to short animations but are very powerful with relatively short cds.
- Abilities with long cooldowns and casting times often are less powerful than abilities that are instant with short cooldowns. (Staff ele comes to mind)
- In order to remedy the imbalance problems gw2 has, Anet must give many abilities hard counters or negative effects to offset their strengths. For example gw2 healing signet could be: Active: Heals yourself for 3,200, Passive: Heals for 392 per second but as long as the passive is active you deal less damage.
This guy this guy has the right idea. Hey Anet take this guy idea, it will help punish a lot of the cheap specs.
They should bring back the punishment for using certain strong abilities. I remember for meteor for the elementalist came with nice big back of exhaustion which reduced your hp. In this game you can take all the most powerful skills and have no worries or issues.
I mean for something like berserker stance, it could be like during its effect you take more damage from non condition attacks.
I think the point is that Anet has to make players consider the implications of using certain skills at certain moments, right now there is very little reason to except CD which is not a big deterrent.
But the trait system should still be divorce from stat increase and make equipment the source of your stats.

A lot of “pros” are going to tell you that the ele has not problems and they would be lying.
In high level PvP, ele are worthless, they get hardcountered by certain classes. In any case, there is currently no real reason to bring an ele to a team other than because you enjoy switching attunements. Everything the ele can do someone can do better.

In that case I hope their new ship sails even faster than the EU/NA ship.

Never. One day they will just close down the sPvP part of the game.
Or if you truly feel that way, you could always NOT play it. I mean the show will go on.
Too fix sPvP they would have to devote more than 1% (my guess) of their development budget for it. Which is not going to happen unless Anet finds a way to better monetize (what a word) sPvP players.
Or another possibility is that they realize that the NA/EU ship has sailed so they are trying to strength the game for the market that has more potential.

If you really think about it, no mmorpg takes skill. All MMORPG relies on exploiting your oponent’s weakness, whether by class, lag/ping, mechanics, better keyboard etc.
The only games that takes a “skill” are fps. You get 1 to 3 bullets to kill someone, no gimmicks just aim.
Also aren’t you the person who was lording over everybody their awesomeness. Was it rank 1 or rank 4 on soloQ.

Eso is not a direct threat to gw2.
In terms of pve content obviously isn’t. But when we compare the “wvw” in Eso to wvw in GW2….. well Eso is better, at least technically (lags etc.). And yes I know, both promote zerging.
Last time I checked wvw is not spvp, your comment is more suitable in that forum. With that said, better is subjective AND it doesnt take into account whether it is worth paying 15 bucks a month. Better for you, maybe but we will have to wait and see if a lot more people agree with you or not. But like I said that is a wvw problem not a spvp one.
This is an mmo forum, if someone isn’t whining chances are the game is dead.
Funny thing is that they woke up recently and prepare new modes for dying spvp (which is good) but by the time they finish them spvp will be nothing but a memory. WvW is good but eq-based (better wins), zerg-based (larger wins) and not lag-free. And pve? n/c
Clock’s ticking Anet. ESO is approaching but I want GW2 to prevail…
Eso is not a direct threat to gw2. Spvp doesnt have the population to make a dent to the overall game.
Also whatever change they make, just assume it is for newer players and market.

Giving 15 points per kill would bring back thief zergs. Two of them on a target at a time and boom – it’s over really fast.
If Anet gave 15 points per kill, they’d have to rework the entire thief class.
I’ve already done that.
Honestly, I am begining to think that you should do another one with the assumption that Anet decided “you know what swagg makes a lot of sense, but i just don’t want to spend the effort and money reworking the game.”

I knew that. But then again how hard is it to make a working ready button to help prevent 4v5’s from players afk loading and dropping 1 minute into the match?
IT must not be as easy as you imagine since it hasn’t been done. It is never good to make assumptions about how difficult something is, a lot of the time they are other reasons things haven’t been implement whether due to resources, timing and priorities. Why would they suddenly tell us. It seems like they are saving all major things for the feature patch and when I say saving. I suspect spvp rewards would be the fact whatever balance they string together.
Honestly though, I see a lot of players calling themselves veterans and while that is nice, I suspect Anet cares more about attracting newer players than pleasing old players. All those changes to sPvP reward wise have been designed to benefit newer player. I think keeping rank was just a reward to get the veterans to stop complaining, but then again I am a pessimist.
This is an mmo forum, if someone isn’t whining chances are the game is dead.
Considering that the thing sustaining guild wars 1 was the PvE side and not the PvP aspect, Ncsoft made the right call assuming what you said is true, but I don’t think so.
I think guild wars 2 was release because they was no major MMORPG that was coming out in late 2012, so they could maximize their box sales. What I think actually happen is that, the overall game did not work out as Anet had hoped. If you look at the changes from the PvE side of things and compare it with their pre-release language their original vision totally failed and now they have been trying to fix the core game (PvE) and everything else probably got pushed aside including PvP, resources wise.
There hasn’t been any major, competitive release yet, 2 years later.
It’s only guessing though, so you could be right at very least in part. But there is one thing I can’t shake from that train of thought being absolutely right, if their plan was to just dump out the game half finished (for box sales) and then finish it up…. they never, like not even around beta, acted like they seriously were trying to finish up PvP….They never did any alpha level changes the game needed, they were extremely slow to work out the hundreds of issues the game had then, they weren’t even in any rush to push out the features every other game was launched with either; meaning they seemed to have already stalled out. That could have been Anet pushing aside PvP to try to recover PvE, but the thing is, in that case, that decision would have had to happen before beta… so usually release dates just get pushed back at that point. Part could have been a hectic launch, but their pace never changed as the game stabilized. It all makes me lean towards the idea that they just lost allot of funding halfway through.
What you are saying is based on the assumption that PvP was a main selling point, they might have said it publicly but I doubt internally it was. But you are right, they did rush the game out as shown by the fact that they couldn’t have been bothered to complete the final personal story boss fight.
Honestly, I think ncsoft had every right to force them to release it earlier than anticipated, after 5-6 years of investments and delays + with no strong western presence, i would do the same. But I don’t think that PvP was ever going to be in the cards. It seems more apparent that PvE suffered mores so that PvP.

This is just one of many things that ANET has done to show that they just don’t give a crap about the veteran PVP players. And people wonder why the PVP community is kittened?
Let’s be honest here are they enough veteran PvPers to warrant actively pandering their every whim and needs?
It seems me if you only read this forum, that whatever future sPvP has, it is in the hands of the newer players not veterans.
I can’t speak for others but I’m currently still playing. But the way things are, I might just go take a long break again.
And it’s funny how you say “pander to their every whim and needs”. What exactly has ANET done to pander to veteran players at all? You made it sound like veteran players always had their way. I mean ANET can’t even put out a balance patch that didn’t take longer than a few months.
Pandering might have been a strong word to use. More like they get a lot of lip (which is totally deserved) from the forum veterans and given the gloom and doom that is the constant theme on this forum, trying to turn that around might be a lost cause.
@OP: First rank is blah. I could care less what they do with it.
The bigger issue in my mind is that they are removing rewards for PvP without introducing something new. Keep the system in place as-is until a new rewards system is ready.
still don’t understand the logic behind that. At best we get a patch 2 weeks from march 18 (highly unlikely).

A lot of people here have been complaining about communication, but let’s examine it from Anet’s prospective.
Let’s assume anet decides to be open right now, here are 2 thigns that are going to happen.
1 players are happy. 2. Players are mad it is too far away.
1a. looking at previous history players on the forums are going to be happy at most for a week then the usual QQ about not being open comes back or how long they taking and how little devs care about PvP (which it is true in terms of resources).
2a. same as 1a players are mad. and keep making new threads about how PvP is dead.
So in both cases overall nothing really changed, forum PvPers are still mad and still making angry thread.
Let’s look at the current situation. Say nothing and then release a lot of information at once with a short future release date. Players are excited and all the animosity temporary goes away, until a couple of hours after said patch. Another thing to consider, a lot of you guys have been here for 2 years (including beta), the fact that you are still here means no matter what they do, you are still sticking with them. Essentially, by saying absolutely nothing they can string you along for the ride. Some might argue but I quit, but if you did quit why do you bother on the game forums?
Personally, given how quiet they have been I think the release date for this “feature” patch is going to be on may 6th. Why May because it is exactly 1 month after the release of ESO and during that time period in may, Anet will be talking about all those nice changes guild wars 2 is going to get (this is more so for the PvE side, since the PvE side is the breadwinner).
And this is the result – a bad product.
Meh, they easily could have kitten out a decent game, even with all the company wide issues.
The problem, the core problem, was that the GW1 guys REALLY wanted to innovate the genre, alone…
If instead they were really good at taking player feedback or stuck with what worked, taking any other game and just tweaking/expanding on it to make a GW’ey feel to it, they easily could have had a decent MMO… but they didn’t.
Creating a system from scratch, attempting to revolutionize a genre, requires allot of time, money, intelligent people and allot of freedom; and NCSoft doesn’t seem the right company to do that under.NCSoft probly cut funding half way through, that’d explain why the game was released missing so many features with an alpha version of the map and classes.
Personally I think NCSoft might have made the right call though. I can’t see them getting much more of a return off of any greater of an investment in GW2, short of by pushing for a real cash shop or hiring new devs (if after two years, a game gets worse… not just progresses slowly, but consistently gets worse off with each patch… that’s a dev-related issue)

There is no such thing as the “PvP Community”.
The forum community is not the same as the PvP community and thus there is no real consensus on issues. In any case, the PvP community will always be upset because their expectations of the game did not match the reality of the game. I don’t blame them, but you would think after a year of it would be apparent.

Do you get some sick pleasure out of ruining people’s ideas. If you don’t think the devs are going to borrow some of the ideas from this thread, that is cool, but I don’t see anybody forcing you to post in this thread.
Even if it took 3 months, 3 month is still better than not ever happening. We get it, you got burned or are still getting burned with Anet devs, but maybe save your anger for them and not take it out on other players. Something is always better than nothing.
Also the game would be dead by then right or is dead, why do you still care?
Is what I’m saying not within reason?
Or are you saying that this thread was more about the feeling of it all, the hope that Anet might actually takes an 180 and brings in this random forum guy to help revamp the game?
Like the OP implied,You are not in on some secret that we all don’t know. We all know but some like him choose to share his ideas instead of sticking his head into the sand. If you want to do that, that is fine, him sharing his ideas shouldn’t be affecting you this much or at all.

It’s fine, internally this is there strategy. They made a decision to let the few remaining dedicated players leave, instead of trying to appease them. They will then make a “big” push to attract new players to pvp. This allows them time to start there process all over.
That might actually be the plan. I think anet has accepted that the hardcore pvper from launch are never trying going to be happy or return, so you might as well focus on the ones that have no bias or angry at them. It might be easier to make new PPL happy than make old ones happy/return to the game.
This new update might be sort of a reboot.

PvP is now officialy dead because you leave?
Did Arenanet write a Blogpost about it?
Link please!
Dude, you don’t understand.
He’s hardcore.
So that means that he is what, Wolf rank right? I always forget if thats the hardcore one or if the Mountain Lion is.
I’ve always thought Deer were very hardcore animals.
Deers are hardcore. A deer almost messed me up a couple of times. One of those times I almost drove into one.

I’d be willing to work with ANet to appropriately adjust bunker-intensive builds and specific super-forgiving active abilities and play-styles so as to make node fights not necessarily all based on a player pressing buttons while running in circles.
And if you’ve fallowed this game at all, you should know that that’s not how this works.
These devs don’t work like that, they balance this game alone and do it through small changes between long periods of time to see how they play out.
That means if they did push out a patch to enlarge nodes they won’t, like there is no chance in hell, that they will couple that patch with adjustments to mobility. It will take them 3+ months to even address that problem and a year if not more to actually improve the situation.

FYI, we don’t think it’s balanced. That’s why we’re still balancing it.
The OP actually makes a good point, though. For this particular feature build, we have not shared much about what’s going on, we get that. Don’t mistake that with we’re not doing much, though.
Thanks for the feedback
Pretty easy to believe not much is going on considering the lack of feedback from the devs themselves….
You are making it harder than it is. It is pretty easy to believe when certain classes have been out of the meta for nearly a year and half.
Telling us stuff is infinitely less important than doing stuff.

So you are saying you guys are finally going to nerf something like healing signet? And finally bring some real significant changes to the elementalist or are guys padding yourself in the back for bringing a 90 second Cd skill only to 75, while other higher armor classes have a more effective version?

ele is fine, high damage = low survability.
nerf thief’s evade.
nerf warriors.
nerf ai build,spirit ranger,mm.
nerf condispam.
lower some stupid long cooldown like arcane shield, mist form and armor of earth.puff, ele in meta.
That would be nice, but your method requires too much effort and will lead to more trouble. What the elementalist needs is another form of active defense, the thieves have their evades, and stealth. Necro have high large HP.
