i will start with berserker because i wont take decimate defenses. chilling force seems like a really great survivability trait.

zerker is weaker overall. With Valk you can take all the necessary crit boosters which while staying in RS significantly longer for even more dps.

i dont know if u noticed but raids are supposed to be hard. i dont take my reaper because i want to do the most dps. necros dps will still be bad in comparison. i take necro for the survivability and 1% lifeforce x5 if u hit 5 targets (the icd is per target) every second is huge.

btw about staying in rs for longer to have more dps…even after the recent buffs dagger autoattack still does more than rs and gravedigger spam

Your theory only works if you can stay alive in zerker, Arena net in the past as in guild wars 1, has shown to be quite capable at creating tuff content. Considering The raids are designed to have more undodgeable (for now anyways) skills, good luck staying alive.

In any case, whatever that works for you. I would like to see how successful you are though. Seriously.

I’m hearing arguments for not showing badges during a match, but what about just standing around in the lobby?

I think it should be just be an option hide/unhide

This is not necessarily true but there could be a compromise like

I know you are trying to defend your suggestion but what I said is true. My experience from previous games.

I find Evan’s question rather strange considering the main reason why they don’t show MMR is specifically to avoid issues such as these.

In any case, it is hardly an option because people will require you to do it or assume the worse. PvPer nature. I mean it is easy to pin the blame on someone.

All of this concern is pointless if there is ANY way to easily search someone’s rank before the match starts.

In Aion Dredge people could easily look up the other teams gear to make a game plan to target a weakest link, or shutdown a strong star player before the match started. I did it, everyone did it.

When you’re seriously competitive you’ll take any advantage to win. And that delay before the match it probably won’t be to hard to look up 5 people. Lol

(Assuming you can search a name in leagues)

So I don’t see how not displaying it during a match alleviates the problem in competition.

Except in aion, dredgion was a glorified dps race and team death kill. Here you have 3points you have to simultaneously defend/attack. In Aion, it was always 6 v 6 race/tdm. So even if they know a person’s division it doesn’t matter much.

Obviously, if it is against a premade it doesn’t matter anyways.

People were calling half of these changes months ago (especially the scepter and scepter trait ones). Truly, these are the most predictable and unimaginative devs given the shallowness of these changes.

the axe’s problem was never its range. It was its lack of useful abilities that hindered it. Even with 900 range on the first two attacks unholy feast is still 600 range. Arguably its most useful skills is still stuck in that range and this also causes another problem since the axe can’t keep people from running away from you when they’re beyond that 600 range. So, in my opinion the range buff was absolutely pointless.

I still see no reason to take this over the staff. Even with its vulnerability and boon corruption it wasn’t very good and you couldn’t justify taking it.

If I was to make some changes I’d play more into that corruption theme and probably have its damage scale up the closer you are to foes as opposed to the further away you are.

Actually, range was also a problem. I hope you do realize they can be more than 1 problem with a weapon.

The axe has a niche and that niche is are bosses like taco that makes being in range a problem. It might not be the best weapon we have, but it is an improvement and it can be improved.

Being overly melodramatic does not get results.

No, you don’t want a matchmaking system that works?

It is also hard to make a good matchmaking system when the system does not have a lot of players. Yes, pvp has been growing and blah blah blah. It does not change the fact that the already small PvP pop is split between EU and US and among 24 horus in a day.

The point being although you are trying to be cheeky as a result of colin’s comment, MM cannot be fixed IF there aren’t enough players at any given moment in time.

Also people lie all the time on the forums in an attempt to rationalize their failures.

tl;dr

This topic exist simply out of ignorance. MM will never be fixed because it cannot fix the pop problem. Never forget that the already small PvP pop is split on two servers (US and EU) and between 24 hours.

The current system is making the player base smaller by the minute.

While I’ll let the PvP team respond to the other points here, I do want to take a moment and address this:

PvP has steadily grown in population and play hours going on nearly a year now. It’s sky-rocketed since the game went free, and the two weeks before this have been our best weeks literally since the week the game launched. We anticipate this week will be the best week login/play wise PvP has ever had in the history of Gw2.

I don’t want to trivialize your points – and our competitive team has some great reasons why things operate the way they do they’ll lay out and explain in relation to leagues soon: I do want to call out you’re using false population data to support your point.

From an ArenaNet perspective, PvP is the fastest growing part of Gw2 and had more success for us as a business in the last year than it’s had by far in the history of the Guild Wars franchise. Next year is going to be even bigger because of that success.

I’m really proud of the work the team has done and the work our amazing player community who has helped grow competitive PvP just as much as our dev team has and would hate to see that lost in this discussion.

One thing about this, the Free accounts are indeed playing in pvp, many of them are most likely trying it out, 2nd account, or friends of pvp’ers

but you should honestly wait another month or 2 to see how the free accounts are doing in pvp for a few reason.
1) Pvp can make or break players from buying the game (Ive known players that almost stop playing b.c of pvp)
2) If they stop pvping and at want ranks
3) are they doing Rank/unrank or just hot joins
4) Are they 2nd accounts? Are they accounts trying to get top LB’s or even “hack”

Free accounts are very fickle when adding to data numbers.

Im only saying this b.c I ran a business for 8yrs and we did Free 1-3 months all the time, After a couple years we Completely made Free members their own numbers in our books.

Except for you, I doubt anybody here did not already realize your comments about free to play increasing pvp pop. Secondly, it doesn’t really invalidate the other points about pvp growing before free to play. Lastly, it is impossible to provide data about a the future. All Colin has is present data and it indicates pvp growing before free to play.

Man, you guys can’t be happy with anything? Reaper is a HUGE buff on necromancers and other professions are indeed trading up stuffs. Not all of them, but some are.
And tbh, chrono and reaper are the best specialization so far.

Please do not downplay how good Necromancers are at CCing. Just because we currently opt to forego tons of weapon-based and utility-based CC in PvE does not mean that we don’t have access to it.

It can’t be a nerf because we are gaining valuable functionality. You may not think it is a big enough buff but that still doesn’t make it a nerf.

The ridiculous overstatements from this community erode the confidence in our feedback.

If the only flaw you found in my argument is that I used a word “nerf.” I am Ok with that.

The fact is it is a flaw because this new system benefits other classes more so than it does for the necromancer. Our whole thing is chill and if child isn’t that useful compare to other skills, why bring the necro.

But like I said, if your whole argument revolves around disconstructing the world nerf. That is cool with me.

Will specific mobs receive weaknesses to specific control effects or conditions that players will need to understand and build a strategy around?

For example, burning does no damage to a fire elemental’s defiance bar while stuns do normal damage and chills do double.

I have some reservations on the approach Robert describes. It sounds a lot like, “Just do whatever. It’s all the same. Auto-attack and mash all the buttonz.”

Would it not be more interesting if a group had to set up flame blasts to burst down an ice monster? The combo system in this game is not as complicated as other games.

Interesting and fun are different things. Yes, it would be cool except for class that could not provide those flame blast. Then this so call interesting mechanic punishes flameless classes.

I don’t see why Anet puts on a world tournament but doesn’t throw out a balance patch once a month. It’s like they want it to be an esport but refuse to put in the work.

Because they are busy with more important stuff. From a time management standpoint, why waste your time pleasing an insignificant percentage of players? I mean players are going to whine about something else. So as a project manager it is probably better to focus on issues that will actually generate you money aka expansion.

Don’t expect any changes until HOT. Also the guys who work on balance are not the guy who work on the world tournament. The WTS is done mainly by marketing while balance has a very specific and important task to make the specialization $$ inducing.

but for real, anet just doesn’t care about pvp’s health. d/d ele which has been a huge problem in pvp for a long time is just being left to rule pvp. supposedly it will get nerfed, but the lack of a when and how leave me with little confidence.

No, I remember them talking about changes to icebow, but due to the fact they are strong in pve everyone assumed those were going to be nerfs. Looks like 2 kinds of people in this thread. Those saying the length is an eyesore that makes them feel uncomfortable, and those that simply like it.

Interestingly, had this weapon been 2x the height of a character instead of 4x to begin with, I don’t think any of these current likers would be making threads about how it’s too small.

The physics, realism and reach don’t matter. The aesthetic appearance of this weapon in it’s standing form is awful, enough for a ton of people asking it to be adjusted. It should be adjusted.

I think you’d be right if it weren’t for one thing. The length matches the radius of the strike.

I can’t tell you how frustrated I get when The Ettin hits me with his pudgy cudgel from 3X it’s length away from him. I think the practicality of an animation matching the effect is quite an important thing in a game.

Is the scythe goofy long? yup, is the entire shroud kinda goofy/kitten, yup. Doesn’t bother me. I’m far more bothered by all the gaudy items in the game.

They could easily just add a green ‘swoosh’ to the outside of each reaper attack to show the actual range. That would be a far better alternative to the current option imo.

So we’re asking for realistic and we’re saying “ohh it’s some weird shockwave effect” ok…

I never asked for realistic. A scythe in general isn’t a realistic weapon. I’m asking for it to not look goofy.

Scholar only works because PvE is brainlessly easy. Based on what I have played I don’t see scholar being viable for GS reaper. The mobs are actually slight threat even in open world, so I am going to assume that instances will be harder.

Sorry but the last posts just makes no arguments, edited in the OP to read the posts if you decide to write anything because your concern may already being argued or solved.

So not going to answer those again just read page one please.

don’t make this about you. You created the topic but it is not yours to control.

The fact is making pvp f2p would cost too much while devaluing the PvE game, which is the source of Arena net’s profit.

Furthermore, in other for f2p to be success in terms of revenue for Arena net it would have to invest far too much. LoL a game smaller in scope has over 1000 employees. I am not saying Arena net has to hire that many employees. I am saying for f2p to be a viable source of income Arena net will have to invest into more employees.

Right now, they can barely make content for PvE, WvW and even their cash shop. What makes you think they will be able to have the resources to hire more employees to maintain not only the PvE systems, but now the separate PvP system? The current method of bundling pvp with PvE means that they don’t have to dedicate too many resources into PvP because PvP is simply a bonus.

the truth is PvP is not a priority and simply suggesting they make PvP f2p is not a viable business model for Arena net. PvP is considered a benefit to buying Guild wars 2, make it f2p the base game loses value. Make it f2p, Arena net HAS to dedicate a lot of resources into monetizing it and maintaining it which isn’t easy. LoL is a game with a significantly small scope has 1000 employees, did you consider why that is?

This is just factually inaccurate, it deals worse damage than Guard Hammer unless they very significantly boosted ratios, and everything we’ve seen so far says they didn’t.

fyi, if you’re running spite with reaper, which is something you should do, you will be sitting on perm 25 might stacks. the guy on the stream hit 5k auto attacks and his gravedigger and shroud5 crit for over 7k. tell me how guard can hit harder than that.

gravedigger has a 1s gcd if the target is under 50% hp so if you’re counting or baiting dodges and you’re able to hit your gravediggers you will literally be destroying their molecules.

I think the focus is on how bad the GS is. It would be funny in a sad way if the GS is useless with reaper in PvP.

  • Proposed changes to Elemental Attunement will pigeon hole builds more. The proposed change to making the trait GM is based upon the fact that the trait is powerful, which it indeed is. However, it is only powerful because the class requires the boons that the trait generates for basic survival, damage and healing. This change will not bring the build diversity we seek, but will make players choose traits they will not necessarily want (staff elementalist for instance does not need Renewing Stamina) just to get the boons the class so desperately needs. The boon generation from Elemental Attunement defines how the class plays and feels. There is no elementalist without Elemental Attunement. The trait should be made baseline and ONLY affect the elementalist with the GM trait buffing the duration and power of the boon and making it AoE.

I love how as a class dependent on boons the developer constantly find ways to take away all our toys w/o giving us other ways to get it like boon stealing.

just because people run staff eles in esl doesn’t mean that it’s viable… there where all kind of things in esl, like static discharge engis for example..

idk why you think staff ele is good fro stronghold, there are no points in stronghold, all open field, and generally staff eles suck in open field.

playing d/d also offers more reliable cc, so if you want a side point bunker just keep playing d/d and not staff.

Staff viability I guess it’s a matter of opinion, personally I think the weapon does a better job dealing with on point attackers as you can do dmg from distance..but anyway soon you’ll be able to play one-shot staff 6/6/6/0/0 with enough sustain to run away and reposition, using elemental shielding+conjure+tempest defense, you’ll have access to 3(4) auras to apply protection( use FGS and get fire aura), then add blinding ashes( now blind on crit with burn precision merged) and stone heart…..yeah I can see the pain staff will bring

You are possibly the only one who thinks staff is or will be viable in pvp. I have to question whether you secretly hate the class.

There is no reason why the class with the lowest HP, armor should need ON hit trait.
Mesmer have their clones.
Thieves have their stealth
Elementalist currently have nothing except aura on a long CD and in theory boons. This means elemental attunement should be slightly weaken but class baseline just like what mesmer currently have. Aura traits should reduce the CD for auras significantly and add more weapons to gain aura.

The effects of signets and gylph should be improve they currently do not provide any significant benefits for cantrip.

Fire and air trait line should be improve.

For lulz why not improve the projectile speed for the elementalist staff and reduce CD for all skills. Thanks to Stronghold, staff ele might finally have a chance.

Most of the new traits only seem beneficial to playing d/d and not staff or scepter.

I’m aware, but if you are talking about changing a trait for the entire class, then the effect needs to be looked at in terms of both PvE and PvP. If you’re just talking about what’s wrong with it, then sure you can ignore one side or the other.

When discussing change all traits actually need to be evaluated so that you can be sure you have a balance of traits that are useful for PvP and PvE (since it is not always possible to make a trait useful for both.) Of course that would be a nightmare to do on a forum thread and should be what the developers are doing in their own internal discussions.

That might be what you are doing but that is not what everyone else is doing and certainly not what the developers are doing.

You should uninstall the game and leave to go get some perspective. Such anger over a video game is unhealthy.

I think he has a valid point. This upcoming patch has at least four substantial nerfs to the standard elementalist play. Therefore, I think it’s very reasonable to determine that the game is no longer fun to play.

One of the key problems that I see with the upcoming changes is that they seem to take a lot of the fun out of the game in exchange for making it easier to balance PvP. Obviously some people will decide that it’s not worth it.

Also, speaking vehemently and expressing displeasure is not unhealthy. It’s cathartic. What’s unhealthy is bottling up your feelings or saying things deliberately designed to provoke people who are upset.

I just have enough nerfs in this game, every patch in this kitteny game ele was nerfed since beta while every other classes get boosted and boosted all time, just look on warriors now, ele didn’t get SINGLE boost since beta, you learn to your hard combos etc while kittenY ranger press 2 2 2 2 2 2 2 2 do nothing just press 2 and deal much more dmg than your hard made combos this is ridiculous and im done with this game, anet have no idea how to balance this game

Don’t even compare Elementalist to Warrior. I have mained both, Warrior has ONLY been nerfed with every balance change since the beginning of the game and are absolute trash in most cases. This patch is actually a good thing for them and will balance them out significantly. As for Elementalist, yes these are pointless nerfs and are unjustified.

I hope you realize celestial Nerf is only for PvP not pve.

Who cares about PvP? This game has literally the worst PvP I have ever seen in a game. It has great potential for all game types but ArenaNet’s dream of making it an eSport is ruining it for everyone. It obvious they have no clue how to balance it.

Considering the PvE is even worse than PvP when you compare it to other games, I wouldn’t brag about it. PvE as long as you have the patience you will win.

Rework to Diamond Skin

How about instead of giving them more terrible ideas to ruin the class we first give them suggestions to fix the other terrible traits? Yes diamond skin is passive and blah blah blah, but it seems Arena net doesn’t know what to do with the elementalist anything that gives them an advantage until the other issues in fire, air and arcane are fix is a win win.

Also as for the first suggestion about making it attunement based, how would you know what conditions are incoming to change to the proper attunement? The only class you could predict is the guardian or other ele making the trait worthless. Passive play is bad yes, but the game is full of it and if you want to get rid of it, you should start with classes that are currently too powerful not classes that have been nerfed to the ground.

While I don’t agree with the suggested trait change you are responding to, you could also predict conditions coming for PvE enemies (again wouldn’t want this trait to happen, but you were clearly only thinking of the PvP side of the trait.)

I hope you do know that all the post in these thread are speaking entirely from the PvP side. It is only in PvP where people are extremely against passive play, not to say PvEer are not but PvPer are far more.

Next WTS starts next week and finals will be held on 8 August at Gamescom. I wouldn’t see such a big meta changing update being released during this event.
Unless they find a way to let people play with the old build for the competition.

ANet uses private servers for the WTS finals. So it’s conceivable that they could roll out the trait changes after the WTS finalists have been selected but before the competition. Doing that would make it hard for the WTS finalists to practice, though.

Another easily likely scenario is they use the WTS to that core specialization will happen august 11.

How ele gets hit (almost) every time

I agree with you completely. However, I dont think ele will ever be “balanced”. It is not the devs will. Ice bow is where is should be and I have no idea if D/D will be viable. They have been wanting to force players away from D/D for alooong time. This expac might just do it.

The problem with that is the d/d is the only weapon that is viable in PvP. The one ones do not compete. Arena net doesn’t seem to want to put the effort in to making staff and scepter useful in PvP. After unless the elite specialization does something wonderful, ele will be relegated to 00666 d/d which is sadly a weaker version of the current d/d.

I would love for a day in which staff would viable in PvP. I hate the d/d playstyle or the lack of it.

Fire Aura rework idea and One with Fire

This class biggest flaw seems to it was the first class created.

There are 2 things to bring Elementalist in line..

1. Give Elementalist more life (like Mesmers, Ranger, Engi)
2. OR give Elementalist 20 % more damage than all other classes (for beeing the weakest)
and <<<< THEN >>>> bring all nerfs you want

It is extremely difficult for Arena net to reverse nerfs, they never ever do it or they have only done it twice.

The easiest way would be to revert the ele back to all pre BW2 nerfs.

Can we stop with all these “On hit” mechanics for elementalists? Why a light armor 10K base health class has all these “hit me so i can get boons/procs” makes no sense for any type of elementalist save a tank one. And that one wouldn’t spec into fire.

How well would that boon removal work for you when you’re a zerker ele specced into fire when some ranger or warrior is smacking you with autos that take nearly half of your life?

Warriors or Guardians should have these on hit mechanics as they can actually take the hit. Elementalist should have less of these and more on crit mechanics except in the tankier lines such as Earth or Water.

The second part is way too much might generation for a might generating powerhouse.

Just my personal opinion.

Anyways, what you said makes sense. For a class with 10k hp lowest defense kinda seems idiotic to make in hit traits. Then again it does show arena net has no idea what to do with elements list. This class biggest flaw seems to it was the first class created.

there is no chance core specialization will come out in the next 2 months. Especially since they are still changing things up. especially given the reception for the necromancer, elementalist and the other classes I don’t care about. So expect core specialization in the middle of summer about 4 to 6 weeks before expansion august 25.

The game is not supposed to have a trinity, yet our class already casting the healing fields everywhere, gets a trait that only affects the healing on others and not ourselves…

It seems when Anet want’s to do something like avoid the trinity or create build diversity they do the complete opposite.

I hope you realize what you said is WRONG. Arenanet has never made it a secret that guild wars 2 has a trinity. They even said it themselves in the beginning of 2012.

Guild wars 2 has trinity that is a fact, it was design to have trinity. Guild wars 2 currently has 3 roles in theory. It has damage, support and control. It doesn’t have a holy trinity, which is fixed roles for damage, tanking and healing. Some classes are designed to be somewhat better at different roles than other class.

So guild wars 2 does have a trinity, the sooner you realize that the better it will be for you.

It seems like in trying to “create” more diversity the balance team decided that the only weapons that the elementalist have are daggers. It is also funny how most of the discussion has been dominiated around dagger/dagger. Remember folks, this includes the balance team the staff and scepter are weapons as well and the changes do not help those new weapons at all.

No more Elemental Attunement + Evasive Arcana

On the other hand we are getting access to geomancer’s training (-33% duration on a number of crucial conditions) = less cleansing required, and we get geomancer’s defense = less heal required.

Considering this I would not mind if the devs reduced our cleaning and healing capabilities, as long as the alternative explained above is compensating enough. The idea is acceptable, the devs just need to work on the numbers.

I have one problem with the principle though. The devs stated that they want to nerf Arcane because it is “too strong”. The truth is that Fire, air, and earth were always way too weak. With the proposed changes earth will be more interesting, arcana will be less interesting (although still very desirable) but fire and air are still lacking. By the same token, many of our skills are terribly weak.

Geomancer’s defense is situational; I play staff and don’t want to be in 600 range.

The ready-up dev-speak sounded like they want to nerf D/D and are taking a ham-handed approach that will affect everything else by forcing a choice between EAs.

Yep, it seem like the devs make their design decisions entirely based on D/D, none of the proposed changes will benefit the other weapons. Staff, focus, scepter will still suck IF they go through with these proposed changes. Scepter wll finally be killed in PvP and Staff never had a chance due to slow moving projectiles and the lack of any defensive ability given how few built-in survival tools they have.

Guardians have their blocks, blinds and higher armor, mesmer they reflects, some stealth, clones and higher hp. thiefs have a lot of stealth. Elementalist got nothing other than terrible skills on terribly long CD, with each passing month getting weaker.

Anet is revamping Condition DMG?

So what does this mean? It means that fighting against condition build will be either easier or harder base on how they are going to change and/or revamp our weapon skills, and how we can deal with everyone has 3 to 5 type of Condi DMG in their condi build.

That is some great analysis there and very insightful.

Here is a better idea, why don’t we all wait for the blog post Roy is currently writing and see how it will work before actually having any discussions about it?

They may revamp condition damage but they need to revamp the achievements for the luminescent armor as they are currently 100% broken and unable to complete at this time and have been for over a month now.

The amulets will be rebalanced to compensate for the loss of stats originally gained from trait lines.

This is probably as good of a place as any to mention that we’ll also be using this opportunity to rebalance PvP’s celestial amulet to be slightly less effective. We’re probably looking at a 10%~ decrease in overall stats, but this number can change as we draw closer to releasing the core specialization changes.

Does this include condition duration!
