The thing is, if they don’t have a starter zone to level and learn, a very large number of people (based on how many have level 20 scrolls, tomes and writs that the game is handing out like candy) will simply pull out the “instant level 80” card and bypass the whole learning process.
If they have a new starter zone, some will still instant 80 but many will take the time to level there and learn the mechanics of the new biomes and even some of the instant 80s will stay there to check out the new map and learn their new profession that way.
A new starting zone wasn’t going to stop people from instantly reaching 80 and skipping the new content.
Also a new starting zone isn’t going to be enough content to level through 80 either. So why would arenanet carenif they instant ding to 80?Why bother making a new starting zones when the old ones are perfectly OK. As for lore reasons I really doubt it would take more than a few hours to hand wave it vs creating new worthless maps.
Um… what???
Silvermember, I think if you actually read his post, he says, “If they have a new starter zone, some will still instant 80.” He said that a new zone would not stop some from instant 80ing. So why make it sound like he did?
I also don’t see anywhere where he indicated that would or would not care if people instant leveled to 80. Yet you asked him why they would. Do you think he has some kind of inside information?
And how do you know if a map would be “worthless” or not.
A new leveling zone, especially if it has three levels like the rest of the new Maguuma maps, may be zone that could help level a new character quite high. We don’t know. So there is no reason to punch holes or contradict anything he was saying.
All he was indicating with what you quoted was that a new starter area MAY encourage new players or old players with new revenants to stay there and learn the new profession. Heck there were people in GW1, that stayed in pre-searing just because they liked it there. So “worthless” is in the eye of the beholder.
Maybe you reread what he wrote, my response was valid.
The point is a new zone is unnecessary to get people to learn the class. One way or another they are going to learn the class by level 80. A starting zone only helps you learn the basis, you rarely get enough time and have access to all your tools to be proficient in the class. Also the most of the people who ding to 80 probably already have the experience to learn the class without having to waste hundreds of thousands being a starting zone.

The thing about true action base combat is that every goes “oddjob” so your a lot harder to hit. Ppl tend to use that trick in GW2 to a point but that only for seeing not landing hits.
That and the crazy high lag that you will have to allow for look at games like DS / DS2 online the lag for hit boxes is crazy now images that with 100+ ppl fighting at the same time it just dose not work out.
true action combat seems to work completely fine in Wildstar and Tera. It’s just that it’s not the style of combat that’s used in GW2. Nothing more, nothing less.
Wildstar doesn’t have action combat or it isn’t that much better than guild wars 2.
Unless they changed it, Wildstar combat is inferior to guild wars 2 automatically virtue of the way “white damage” works aka unavoidable damage. That doesn’t make it an action game, it simply makes it a slightly improve WOW combat system.
The only thing actiony about TERA is the targeting system and that is disputable. Since the targeting system has no real relation to whether a game is an action game or not. If it did then games like GoW and DMC would not be considered action games.

Guess what happen when ARenanet “fixes” the zerker meta? The meta will simply change to a new meta and will be back at the same spot.
The problem to me isn’t that there is a Zerker Meta, the problem is that the content currently favors zerker build. Most timed bosses except world boss favor zerker They need to change the way stats work so that Zerker are heavily punished for not being very good zerkers.
This is an mmo forum, if someone isn’t whining chances are the game is dead.
That is to say, content needs to be balanced so that berserker characters go down in 5-6 hits, while a Nomad character can not only sustain 20+ hits before going down but also easily heal themselves back up. Instead of the 1 vs 2 hits we have now. Likewise a berserker character should kill an enemy before they can utilize their own healing/CC, while a nomad character cannot do that. And so on.
So, let’s see if I have this straight.
- Mobs should hit for less damage, so that berserker stats should allow for 5 to 6 times the mistakes/white damage as now v. the 1 hit you believe they can take now.
- Nomad characters should be able to make/take 20+ mistakes/white damage v. the 2 hits you believe they can take now.
- Glass characters should be able to consistently one-shot (presumably players, since mobs rarely heal, unless you’re talking about Mordrem Menders) before they can use a heal or (in most cases instant) CC.
That’s what your words say. I hope that this is not what you meant.
You are being too literal. Also he didn’t say anything about mobs doing less damage.
I think the point he was making is Zerker should go down if they get hit by a mobs attack significantly quicker than a Nomad for example. Zerker however should be able to kill faster than Nomad as a compensation.
Essentially, his point is vitality and toughness should actually scale relative to surivival similar to the way power and ferocity and precision does for damage.

Z axis would only be an issue IF you are assuming that you will be able to use skills while in gliding and there are no indications that would be the case. Or it will work EXACTLY like it does for water. There is no different between the way water and air works in the Z-axis.
It would be extremely foolish to be able to use skills while gliding. Z axis might only work if the game had an FPS targeting system which limits how certain skills would behave.

I can’t deny that the news of no new race has me extremely disheartened. While this indeed doesn’t add any mechanics, cosmetic changes are a huge part of Guild Wars.
That said I’ll try to keep an open mind.
Pretty sure Guild Wars only ever had one race. And cosmetic changes were added with new professions and skins. In other words, HoT is following in its predecessors footsteps.
Irrelevant. Guild wars 2 already has 5 races right now and it’s commonly known that Tengu were at some point a playable race in development.
Also, while Guild Wars did not add races, it did in fact add nationalities with distinctive features.
Yes gw2 has 5 races adding more doesn’t add anything important other than a waste of resources and a check mark. Also funny the majority of people play humans which makes adding new races and even bigger waste.

Future of existing PvE Zerker Meta in HoT
in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns
Posted by: silvermember.8941
Unless they add unavoidable 15k hits and 15k heals in every fight, the Zerker meta isn’t going anywhere.
Meta is only meta because it is the MOST. Zerker builds might not go away, but looking at the recent content, Arenanet is beginning to design content that will significantly reduce the amount of people who will use Zerker and that is also fine.
That doesn’t mean every useless stat combo will be viable because a new meta is going to develop. Meta is simply part of any online mmo since players prefer the path of least resistance. If Zerker gets weaken a new meta will appear.

I sure hope not. This game needs less weapon swapping, not more. It’s an awkward mechanic, as far as MMOs go. The idea of swapping weapons to keep yourself relevant based on what is going on around you is okay. Unfortunately, it seems like usually the only thing weapon swapping is for is to keep using your longer cooldowns, regardless of the situation. I suppose that’s the downside of every game that’s based solely on cooldown, not resource.
Reading your other posts makes me glad you are not a game designer, or every mmo will be even more similar then they currently are.
Your complaints about weapon swapping and the lack of resource management would be valid if that prevented people from other games from spamming skills and we both know that rarely happens. In a lot of mmorpg, potions usually circumvent whatever resource management the game has and the cooldown is short enough for the potions to allow players to spam it as well.
Point being resource management never works anywhere. The only thing that stop players from spamming powerful skills wasn’t this imaginary resource management it was the cool down.
This is an mmo forum, if someone isn’t whining chances are the game is dead.
No way, they do that. It’s hard enough to balance Ele as it is.
That’s what people said about a new profession in general…and added weapons to professions.
People are really too worried about extreme balance. That stifles innovation and fun, to an extent. Diablo 3 is currently suffering greatly from that. Guild Wars 1 had a ludicrous number of skills to try to balance, but they still pulled it off just fine. More than just fine, to be honest.
Guild wars 1 never pulled if off. You just have a nice tint rose glasses.
A lot of skills in guild wars 1 were either useless in one mode. Useless because they was significantly better version of the same skill. A combination of skills completely trivialized and broke the game and sometimes allowed heroes to play the game successsfully with little to no input from the player and player character.
Guild wars 1 was just a whack a mole balancing fortunately for the balance team since 80% of the skills were worthless the balancing was slightly easier.

I know it’s early and we don’t have all the info, but when the interviewer compared the new mastery system to a “gear check” and that idea wasn’t shot down in the response, that gets me a little worried.
It is technically a gear check because if you don’t have glide but the content requires it, what do you think will happen?
But that is no different from any expansion having content that locks out people without expansion. Which is technically also a gear and skill check since you wont.
The point being the nature of a paid expac demands players who don’t want to buy it, to be behind those who buy it.

Guild wars 2 will never be an esport because it is competing in an era of f2p competitive focused game.
If guild wars 2 PvP was f2p, it will have more players which mean more resources like LoL to dedicate to PvP. Unfortunately, guild wars 2 cost money and the people who buy it, mostly prefer the PvE just like in guild wars 1.
Guild wars 1 did great because it existed in the subscription era, that era is gone and we are in the f2p era. I mean why pay to play gw2 when you can get a better pvp game for free.

OP allow me to ruin your day. NO new race.
Shacknews: You’ve added a new profession, however you did hold off on adding a new race. What led to this decision?
Johanson: For this one, we looked at what we would get out of adding a new race and what benefit it actually brings to the players from a gameplay standpoint. It’s very limited in Guild Wars 2. A new race adds a racial skill or two and a little bit of story, but it doesn’t give that much meaningful gameplay in the grand scheme of things. The race is more context for the early story that you experience. So we wanted to focus things that would provide a lot more gameplay and address parts of Guild Wars 2 that we felt like we really wanted to be able to make a better experience and grow. So right now, we didn’t feel that a new race was a key need for the game, whereas the other things that we’re adding really provide fundamental building blocks for the future.
This must hurt.

What was *not* anounced for the new expansion
in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns
Posted by: silvermember.8941
- Dungeons
- Raids
- Races
- End to all zerker all dps
- Complexity to dungeons
- Non-heavy classes
The first two points aren’t confirmed. They may be added to the new region. Not a new raiding system but perhapd, raid-like content in the new maps.
Well, according to their FAQ (https://help.guildwars2.com/home);
Q: When is the next big feature reveal for what’s coming in this expansion?
A: We wanted to reveal Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns when we were ready to talk about every major feature we’re planning. That’s why right now, every major feature planned for Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns is there for you to check out at http://heartofthorns.guildwars2.com. That said, there are so many details left to uncover and share with you, to show you, and to eventually let you play as we take you on the journey from now through launch.
… every major feauture was revealed or mentioned.
As far as I know, dungeons/raids and new races are major feautures in the MMO genre. What would MMOs be without dungeons and races?
Raids are not a major feature of guild wars 2 neither are dungeons. Most of the things they talked about where either brand new. I mean based on your logic are not getting new armor because they never announced it.
This is an mmo forum, if someone isn’t whining chances are the game is dead.
i agree there is not yet enough information for us to judge how the new game mode will be.
You can infer quite a lot based on the info given and the data-mined maps from a few months ago.
NPCs
First, NPCs will be an important part of the map. NPCs in PvP tend to drag down the competitive aspect. If the NPCs can put out equivalent damage to players, then it’s not fun; NPCs will come along and +1 a fight and win it. If you want to make NPCs deal reasonable damage, they also have to have lower HP pools like players. But because of AI, they’re susceptible to kiting and exploitation of their pathing. So they’re useless without players around to babysit them. And what about CC? In PvE we either have NPCs that can be CC’ed for days or unshakeable ones which can’t be CC’ed at all. Neither fits well in PvP.The only NPC archetype which minimizes those issues is the low-damage “HP punching bag” like the tower and keep lords in WvW. It has enough HP/armor to weather repeated CC, can’t be burst down quickly, but doesn’t interfere heavily a fight between players. It does enough damage over time to make it difficult to 1v1, but at the same time, it feels useless in a larger fight.
Map Design
Second, based on the data-mined map, each team has a lane for its NPCs to go to the enemy base, and each team has a trebuchet that can hit their enemy’s NPC lane. The goal of that design is to split up players so that it’s not blob vs. blob. Players need to defend/attack trebuchets, defend their NPCs, hinder enemy NPCs, and run supply to get more NPCs. Sounds great, right?Well, it works for casual players. When you try to make this format competitive, you’ll run into a few problems:
- The lord rush. What’s to stop each team from just ignoring all those mechanics and zerging to the lord and whoever kills it faster wins? The gates need to last long enough to delay that and allow for defenders to respawn or come back and defend. Which causes:
- PvDoor. This gets boring quickly, and it makes the NPCs feel more integral to the game compared to the actual player vs. player combat. And if NPCs are integral, you need:
- Supply Mules. Someone gets stuck doing the boring job or running supply to keep the NPC army flowing. If there are no restrictions on it, then you’ll have high-mobility builds like sword + greatsword warriors running it non-stop. If they put heavy restrictions on supply runners to prevent that, then you end up with the orb from spirit watch minus any abilities, which makes you a sitting duck and makes the task even more boring. Both alternatives suck.
Unless you can see into the future, your comments are not really useful. Instead of speculating yourself into torture how about you take a wait and see approach.

If the CORPG genre wasn’t on life support this would be a less terrible idea (i mean on a scale of terrible ideas this is a 80/100). No publisher is going to cede control of their IP nor do I think they are enough “guild wars 1” fans to generate enough money to revive guild wars 1.
It is nice to have dreams, but you have to be realistic. Nice thoughts don’t make money.
One of the main reasons that alot of people are stuck in the spiral of complaints is their illusion that GW2 should have been GW1-version 2.
Like how the old Warcraft fans, complained for years how WoW ruined the franchise.
The problem is that ANet team fooled themselves by believing that they were creating something really unique with GW2, which is obviously false. They removed the question mark on the top of quest givers and added some simple conveniences that are nearly irrelevant.
Because GW2 is a standard MMORPG, it’s comparable to WoW, which in my opinion is a more complete game than GW2, and it will take you a lot more to get bored.
ANet should have followed the CO-RPG epicness from GW1 when creating GW2.
The bold part is what we call an opinion, at least don’t try to present opinions as fact. Secondly, if ARenanet wanted to make another CO-RPG they would have, luckily they did not because the CORPG genre is effectively dead.
The point being Guild wars 2 being more like an MMORPG was actually intentional, especially since that is exactly what they said. Finally, an mmorpg with a monthly sub and about 6+ years headstart has more “content” technically, but unfortunately given the game’s structure and mechanics makes most of that new content worthless.

@Bernie
If you think a good player playing the game and investing thousands of hours into improving his ability to play it equals “screwing around in a game” you’re dead wrong.
People do put effort in. People do it 50 times and fail before they do it right. People read, theorycraft and learn from their mistakes.
Perhaps you haven’t come across these facts since you seem rather uninformed to their existence.
The game doesn’t have to feel like a chore but good plays and good strategy and good theorycrafting should be rewarded.
There’s no reason the worst of players should be rewarded on par with the best of players.
The problem isn’t just that playing well isn’t rewarded. It’s worse than that. The better you get the more dull the game gets as the game hasn’t kept up with a growing skill level that many have obtained. That’s the big issue with not having increased difficulty. Your players that have learned to play well are being punished.
Old games use to increase in difficulty as you beat levels and content. The new status quo for MMOs is to stagnate as they don’t want to alienate anyone, in this very reserved approach they’ve shut off anyone who plays the game for a challenge.
Let’s be honest here, MMORPG are not games you play the challenge. There are better ways to get a challenge and that is in single player games since they come with a difficulty slider.
Crying about challenge is like going to a Chuck E cheese and complaining that the games are for kids and they should have games that cater to adults since adults like games as well. Chuck E cheese could include more adult (I don’t mean sexual games, just games like COD, rated T-M) games or the adults could realize they are best served going somewhere that allows them to play adult games.

ANet gets cash flow from the gem store. A lot more than they got with GW1. This is why they could afford to make a free expansion, and I really really REALLY hope they do, because a paid expansion would fragment the playerbase.
That’s a terrible argument since guild wars 2 arguably requires more resources to run than guild wars 1 which it does. Arenanet is 300+ versus ~50 when guild wars 1 was being made.
Secondly, it isn’t about if they have money. From an investor standpoint, Ncsoft has literally ZERO reason to give the expansion for free. They already know a lot of people are going to buy it, it would be like leaving money on the in other to please a few people who wont buy the expansion.
This is an mmo forum, if someone isn’t whining chances are the game is dead.
Some people think that Anet is sponsored by Santa or something. Things cost money, games cost money. Dont expect them to give games away?!
They do, but by their current expected revenue they can afford to pay every single one of their employees over a $100k annual salary, including bottom-tier customer support workers while still maintaining their infrastructure, building expenses, etc.
The money has already been spent if the content is complete, anyways, seeing as ANet has repeatedly stated they will make no announcements until the content is guaranteed to be released, due to the outrage from lack of delivery of certain WIP items which could not be finished before.
ANet fully paid for all development costs of the game and way more before the game even released. Gem store users account for revenue likely in the hundreds of millions annually. I get that games cost money, but it’s not like they’re hurting for cash, and the cost has already been paid for.
Also to add, GW2 isn’t the only product that’s keeping ANet’s, or should I say NCSoft’s, pants up.
:/ It’s a bit strange how people believe and think that games NEED either a subscription or some sort of money flow… Hell someone a while a go even wanted to throw more money at ANet and proposed a kick-starter event to fund an expansion. Lol…
Guild wars 2 is the only product keeping Anet’s pants up. Ncsoft has aion and blade and soul in korea to sustain their profits. The point being if guild wars 2 becomes unprofitable they are going to be firing staff in Arenanet just like Ncsoft did to Ncwest.
Also You do need a way to generate cash flow, I have no idea why you seem to think they don’t. Also I doubt any kickstarter would have enough money to play 300 employees at a rate of 30-100k. Then again I suspect your whole post was just a joke.
I can’t wait to see all the whining when they announce the level cap increase. They said if they ever did an expansion they would increase the level cap, but people seem to always just put their fingers in their ears and hum when it is brought up…
I would be fine with a raised level cap if ascended and legends gear scale as you level to the new cap.
I don’t know why people thinking they will be a a level increase especially given how easy it is to level and given how many tomes players have. I do think they might introduce a new class and I do think they might bring back Dual classes and then require you to relevel the secondary class. If they were to do that, it would be brilliant since a lot of people would completely ignore the relevel aspect and focus on the dual classing.

It should be a paid expansion only because people will see a higher value in that versus a free expansion. The human mind is an amazing thing when look at how it perceives value.
Also doing a level cap increase would be pointless, given the amount of tomes players would most likely have by the time the expansion releases. It would also serve to just kitten off the players since it invalidates their gear.
There is one thing for certain though, we are getting easier precursors.

A good example of why you can’t have too many difficult content look at queen’s gauntlet and Wildstar as inspiration. People whine how difficult Gauntlet was and wildstar is changing their policies to cater to more than simply the minority that want “difficult” content aka content with best reward.
Guild wars 2 has some difficult content, but people hate doing it because the rewards are not there. This leads me to believe people simply see difficult content as a vehicle for better loot and not for the challenge. So why bother making difficult content when people have different definitions of the content, people won’t do them and it waste resources catering to a small percentage.

Wrong ghostly hero.
The one’s in PvP were just unnamed ghosts that happened to be heroes.
The one we meet in GW2 is the ghost of Turai Ossa, who we encounter in the Crystal Desert in GW1, not in any PvP maps.
Sorry :P
Well in GW1 when the game first started in order to enter into pvp area on a pve character you would enter behind crystal desert into an area known as tomb of the primeval king..? Coincidence maybe? Hope so?
There is absolutely nothing about this to suggest that there is going to be a GW1 style PvP match introduced.
Even if what they were saying wasn’t already stupid, why would they introduce a PVP game mode in a PvE focused story.

Man it sucks to see people treat Konig Des Todes like this… I know you’re going to hate it Konig but don’t leave the lore!!
There’s probably less than 10 people that are as knowledgeable about the GW universe as him. I even understand where he’s coming from. The reveal was really overly dramatic. It’s similar to the feeling of watching a Transformers movie. It’s just flat out disappointing the direction the story is going for that Hollywood appeal.
Being proven wrong is nothing more than peanuts compared to seeing the GW universe becoming predictable or uninspiring (Kormir becomes god! Ta-Da!; Sylvari are actually dragon minions! Ta-Da!).
This argument is done… They didn’t go in that direction, they already committed to it ages ago. Angel McCoy said it was in the first concepts for the Sylvari, to Arena Net, they have always been dragon minions, Arena Net didn’t take the “popular route”, they already wrote that to be the case, multiple years ago. Konig might be disappointed, but that’s coming straight from Arena Net, it was intended the entire time. She even congratulates those that figured it out before today

Even if they want to assume it is a lie by Arenanet, they pretty much don’t have a choice but to accept it.

Well Anet stayed silent too long. If this isn’t an expansion they are going to have some major marketing fallout, and the game will suffer. Doesn’t matter what they intended or planned, or if the communities expectations are reasonable or not. They kept the community too content starved for too long, and now they are going to either have to deliver or pay the consequences.
What community? The loud internet community (forum made if the same 100 people who constantly post their anger?), reddit.community or the majority not part of any community?
