I used to run the Academy Gaming tournaments for GW2.
(edited by tichorum.2415)
This is how we will be seeding the Tournament of Legends 3. Keep in mind this is not 100% set in stone, but the general outline has been set.
The following tournaments will give you points based upon your performance in each week beginning on Sunday, April 26th.
ESL Weekly (Sundays on NA & EU)
Academy Gaming Weekly (Mondays on NA & EU)
ESL Monthly (May 6th)
Due to restrictions for who can participate in the Academy Gaming weekly tournament, the ESL Weekly offers a higher amount of points to those that wins a series, ultimately putting them higher in seeding terms than AG Weekly participants.
Teams will gain points with a particular roster so long as they retain 80% (4/5) of their original line-up. If less than 4/5 of the roster plays, the new roster will be added as a separate entity gaining those points, while the original roster will still remain a part of the system. That being said, no team will ever be ‘deleted’ from the ladder in case there were multiple substitutes for a particular week. The roster that is signed up with for the Tournament of Legends will be the one that is seeded.
Note: In effect for only between April 27th to May 25th, the Academy Gaming weekly will not ban the previous week’s winners from participating.

FAQs —-
Q: Is the ESL Monthly worth significantly more than the ESL Weekly?
A: With such a short turnaround from the announcement of the points system and ToL as a whole, many teams didn’t know there was this potential for the ESL Monthly to be such a large part of a points system. Because of this, we have decided to make it worth slightly more, but not enough to where other teams cannot catch up.
Q: If my team participates in the ESL Weekly on a weekly basis but misses one week and still aren’t allowed to do the AG Weekly, will we be compensated for points?
A: Sadly, no. The rosters require 4/5 players to accounted for or the point total will be put onto a new, separate roster. Given how this plays out, we won’t compensate for your points.
Q: Do 9th-16th in both the ESL Weekly and AG Weekly get points?
A: If you lose in the first round, we truly don’t know what you’re made of, but we praise your attempt at participation and will reward you with a better seeding than those who sign up for the Tournament of Legends and do not participate at all.
Q: Are ESL Weeklies worth more points than AG Weeklies?
A: The ESL Weeklies are worth significantly more than the AG Weeklies due to the higher skill level required to perform well.
Q: Why are points hidden?
A: To encourage teams to stick together and not discourage teams from participating that aren’t as high as they would like to be. Do not worry about your points, focus on playing to the best of your ability. If we find that this system is effective, we will release it for the public eye for the future ToL tournaments.

Sadly ToL will never happen again. They have ESL on Sundays and those amateurs on Thursdays to organise the tournaments.
Lol what? It’s on a Saturday and it’s happening. How could it not happen again?
We don’t even know how far down the road is and seeing as it’s a year later since the first one, I could only hope we have more in the future. Can’t believe someone on a team that can actually place first in this isn’t excited for it.
VoDs save to a folder on my computer when recorded. I was streaming from Genyen’s Twitch so I didn’t realize that the VoD saving wasn’t automatically, ultimately not saving the VoD. It’s saved on Genyen’s Twitch iirc, but no audio.
We have now added a new weekly 1v1 tournament. Details in the original post.
Looking forward to casting this!
This is 100% going to happen. Our Koth server is up and running and weekly 1v1 tournaments will happen soon.
Wow that’s awesome how you uploaded a lot of the videos to youtube! The website looks great!
Glad to hear it! Hoping it can be of great use!
Our website is now live at www.AcademyGamingNet.com!
The tournament signups for the AG Weekly #15 are up at battlefy.com/academy-gaming.
Rule change: The previous week’s AG weekly winners are not allowed to participate.
Thank you Anet for making it possible to watch 30+ minutes of turret cancer Kappa
1 OPN throw away from making it another 30+.
Hey there,
Do you by any chance already know when the next tournament will be?
The next tournament will be this Monday, April 13th. We are in the process of moving our sign-up page and will be updating that within the next day or two. Come back to this thread for updates on it.
Money.
If you are a professional or aspiring video game pro, this isn’t the game to get rich on.
This is hardly the issue. Only a handful, if that, of players in other games are actually “rich”. The salary for competitive players in other games are extremely low and the majority of their money comes from tournament winnings, which very few earn due to the high competitiveness. The rest of the “pros” earnings is from streaming which most players find themselves having to do. Professional League of Legends streamers make more money than professional League of Legends players (assuming they don’t win Worlds).
The only games that offers more for prizing is Dota 2’s The International (and only The International) which is mainly funded by the viewers themselves. Even that isn’t enough to outlast a pro streamer.

It’s not just Dota 2. There’s other games out there that offer better prizes.
It is an issue. Look at some players in the tournament scene. They disappear and show back up once WTS qualifiers are coming up. The incentives to play weekly aren’t there if you have grown bored of the game and not just playing because you really enjoy it.
And your point about LoL streamers making more money than LoL tournament players isn’t too big of an issue, as I’m sure if you are highly skilled and even the least bit entertaining or educational you could garner support on Twitch in those types of games.
This isn’t at all a gripe about Arena Net. They can only be as generous as their resources and budgets allow them to be.
I would add that the fact our competitive scene in GW2 is so tiny, and it’s really hard to find four other players who want to tryhard together and make that team last for long periods of time.
I commend you for your efforts in helping it grow
Do you think $141k is rich? The top income number is coming from a guy who has played since 2007. That’s 9 to 10 years. That’s like $14k-15k a year. CS earnings are REALLY low compared to other games, so bringing up CS isn’t the greatest idea. SC2 has more winnings.
Try 3 years. CS:GO hasn’t been around for 9 years. So, yeah, your math is wildly off base. That’s over $40k a year from tournaments. Not “rich”, but middle class money. Who knows what the guy got from other places.
He’s been active in CS for 9. Read up on him.
He’s made over 40k a year over the last few years from CS:GO alone.

Even so, that’s nothing compared to LoL and Dota 2. Regardless, the point is that money isn’t the issue. It’s complexity of the game that doesn’t allow for outsiders to understand it in a short amount of time. Also, it’s not F2P.

It’s too hard for anyone who doesn’t know how to play the game to watch a match and know what’s going on.
Mila appears twice mwahahaha…
Just that good
Only see me once though. Yea wondered where Mobos was. Was told it’s kitten. :P
There are some dinosaurs up on this list. If we’re including dinosaurs, you left some key names out. ^^
The new rules are in effect as of tonight! Sign up!
Sounds like a good deal! Can’t wait for it.
The criteria that players must match in order to participate has been substantially changed for future tournaments. Rulings:
Criteria For Who CANNOT Participate
After this week’s cup events took place, I have decided to have more tangible restrictions as to who can participate, ultimately opening up the opportunities for new teams and players to play and restricting higher tier players to other tournaments.
If there are any questions, do not hesitate to ask.
(edited by tichorum.2415)
Sign up for tomorrow’s tournament! It will be streamed once again!
Be sure to sign up for tonight’s tournament!
Excited to announce that our EU tournaments will be hosted on every Monday! This is a change from the previous schedule which was every other Saturday. They are opened up for more than 8 teams as well. Hope to see people there!
This upcoming Monday, March 16th, the AG tournament will not be allowing free agents and have a max of 8 teams. It will also NOT be streamed. I will be away.
This is being ran by my admins this upcoming week.
Third time in past 2-3 days on NA servers I’ve gotten a PvP queue pop or just finished a PvP game and I get DCed. I cannot log back in past the character screen because this pops up:
“The game client lost its connection to the server. Please wait a few minutes before restarting the client and trying again. (Code=7:11:3:191:101)”
Then it continues to do it for the next several hours.
Super awesome of you guys to hold these tournaments, any clue if you may make the 7 days cooldown apply to include the next tournament. It’s fun and all but I can feel a lot of teams getting discouraged if it’s Seraphs of Fortune and The Dream are the finalist every week.
This is understandable and something we’ve already been taking into consideration. It for sure won’t be in next week, but possibly the one after.
Yes, one of the special features for the AG tournies!
Sign up for tonight’s tournament! Giveaways as well.
Don’t forget to sign up for the tournament held tomorrow!
So I just bought the game and I am download it, so my question is:
What is a nice starting class for a hardcore pvper like me![]()
I want a class that is easy to learn so I can get in the game faster.
I think if you’re trying to be a hardcore PvPer you should get familiar with all of the classes to see what they have to offer.
Despite what I just said, the most viable classes right now at large would be warrior, elementalist, engineer, and thief.
In terms of difficulty (easiest -> hardest): warrior -> ele/eng -> thief.
Never wrote my response.
Until a new meta hits, the Abjured won’t lose. Once a new meta hits, they’ll be vulnerable IMO.
I think one of the old LoL ladder systems would be quite suitable for the medium-low population this game exhibits.
I think you may want to rephrase that. The game is relatively high pop compared to most other mmos. It’s just that most of its players are not into spvp. While you have a good idea I feel they could go about it better and Im pretty sure the game already uses a"hidden" elo system for match making.
I think it’s a hidden system because when I queue ranked alone I play against people who actually challenge me at times (I dont get to free shot as a ranger). However, when Im with my brother who hasn’t played as much ranked as I have I get to sit and free cast longbow skills all day.
Good points made. This game has a relatively high population compared to other MMOs. Only WoW has a more stable playerbase in terms of longevity of the MMO itself. I believe GW2 used to use the Glicko system rather than Elo. Not sure if that is still the case.
Academy Gaming is now hosting the EU tournament, formally known as the Tournament of the Gods. This tournament will vary slightly from the NA Academy Gaming tournament, but holds the same purpose.
This tournament will be ran by the same staff. Just want to give a warm welcome to the EU side!
Notable differences:
If anyone has any questions, do not hesitate to ask.
(edited by tichorum.2415)
The next tournament is March 9th.
Including myself, there are 3 people in my guild that I would like to participate in these competitions. Can I play with my guildies or will we be split upon entering the queue?
You may sign up with 3 on your roster and add “Free Agent” as your fourth and fifth. You will be given two free agents.
I didn’t know we couldn’t hold public discussions about the rules of this tournament in this thread O_o
okay then
It was in reference to the turret engineer debate as a whole, not the discussion of ruling.
Any serious concerns about the state of the tournament should be addressed to me personally. It was to my understanding that this issue was resolved before the tournament when the ruling was made. I’d like to keep this discussion on-topic before this thread gets closed. Thanks.
For clarification it’s not banned. Only one per team.
Next tournament starts in 90 minutes!
Now that these tournaments have gem prizing shouldn’t they be stickied! (hint hint)
Yes, we do have 14,000 gems in our prize pool for every weekly we host! I hope to see more teams join up.
Also, they are now on Mondays!
Kaelaris is surprisingly good given how long he’s been in the scene. I feel like his overall professionalism and experience as a caster overall makes him one of the best.
Why am I not on this list. QQ. Shame on you infantry!

Don’t forget to sign up for tonight’s tournament!
I really wanna try my hand in competitive play. My question is how do I break into the scene?
I host a weekly 5v5 tournament that is (currently) held on Saturdays. This is for newer players/teams to intermediate players/teams. It’s a good place to start if you’re looking to break into the PvP tournament scene.
Unfortunately my post was un-stickied so I will resort to posting this link for you if you wish to try it out: battlefy.com/academy-gaming.
Play in a tournament with some friends and see how you fare. That’s the best way to see how ‘good’ you (and your friends) are. Only then will you get in real 1v1s against good players and team fights against good teams.
I don’t think it’s “How to beat the Abjured?”. I think it’s “When to beat the Abjured?”.
And I think that comes when the celestial amulet nerf comes around. With Apex coming back, the Abjured will be tested and a good chance at being taken down.
