Inflation pushes progression beyond reach

Completely agree, even with the rewards revamp of the dailies monthlies, it’s still a problem. I spoke at length about this over a year ago when multiple threads opened, talking about the inflation of the gold standard in the TP and the lack of rewards from doing the most basic of things like killing monsters that should drop the loot you need for crafting instead of trying to use a double RNG standard in which there’s a drop rate for a bag then a second drop rate for what you may or may not get from said bag. It’s part of the grand design now in games however.

Others wrote about it when this game launched that it would change the market of mmo’s. It has but not in the way they thought it would, it’s made things worse. Now because of the apologists here in the GW2 forums and in other places online who’ve basically stood by and allowed these changes to not only happen but continue, the rest of the themepark mmo’s out there with anything other than a subscription, have a similar model. “Purchase in game currency in order to progress” seems to be the theme of not only new themeparks but also older themeparks who’ve changed their models to try to attract the unwary and the trusting doe eyed masses eager to hand over everything they own for a chance at a virtual item.

Lately I have been playing less and less of Gw2, which in a way can be a good thing as I am now rediscovering some good single player games I missed out on while time sinking into Gw2.

Let me start off by saying that “Progression” in Gw2 is very different from other games. By progression I mean having nice things, building towards something of value, collecting legendaries, and generally having nice things.

Ascended armor and Legendaries has soared up to astronomical value, with forging a set of light armor totaling over 1200-1500g in materials and/or months worth of time performing tedious grind tasks and mat collecting. Forging legendaries is even worse.

Inflation has caused all basic necessities for “Progression” to soar to levels way beyond the reach of anyone but a Black Lion tycoon.

The acquisition of any high end items is directly tied into crafting and the market, with minimal ways of obtaining them alternatively (considering the randomness of chests, and the even lower likelyhood of any reward being of a specific stat combination that is usable to you).

When “progressing” towards things such as Legendaries and Ascended Armor, players can work hard and seemingly get nowhere.

The game’s end progression has essentially turned into a giant wallstreet simulation that greatly rewards investors and marketers (especially ones with large amount of gold) vs. people who actually play the game for standard rewards.

Lackluster rewards and incentive has always been a problem in Gw2. I thought the addition of the collections was a good idea, but even the rewards from them are still pretty terrible.

Many people I know are just getting tired of logging in because there is nothing to do but grind for a goal that is further away then pluto, get fed up and buy gold to get what they want, or log in for a few minutes to stand in front of the black lion and play the market because its easier to advance via trading than playing the actual game.

This has lead to this sort of era of stagnation in Gw2, where people are just feeling like they are wasting time due to all the rewards being tied to the market and very little incentive or advancement beyond hoarding gold and manipulating trades.

The game has become a splitting image of the great American Depression, complete with the sad carnies begging for coins in the middle of lions arch.

While I see the need to keep gold valuable in order to support the game through the gemstore, I feel that the balance and the emphasis on wallstreet play in the game is too much. So much to the point where standard players who are doing basic reward play are scratching their heads wondering why they are wasting all their time and what this secret is in order to get into the mile high club (who are really just a collection of investors that gained all their wealth before the market inflated and everything valued up to a point to where its out of reach of normal players).

This kind of world is just not fun. I for one will be taking a break, with sparse logins to check the health of the game, unlock stories, and generally see what changes in the future.

Hobo Sacks: A Terrible Fashion Statement

in Engineer

for the love of everything hip mounted kits for sure, I’d much rather have something that made me still feel like I was an engineer without ruining the time/gems I’ve put into looking cool, after that we just need some military styled pants (with pockets because I need somewhere to put all my gadgets) and a lab coat and we are set.

… i beg to differ with the “just a coat and pockets”. If it would be after me and my wishes engineers would have a bit more “beef” to them…apperance wise

I agree while in beta I thought this class would be a heavy class in that it would have the option of wearing heavy armor similar to the engineer in games like torchlight II which gave the engineer bots that followed him around and abilities like Spidermines thatfollowed the enemies instead of dispursing in an AOE and just laying there until their blinking ended completely useless, or being danced all over, turrets like those seen in the earlier version of Torchlight 1 which had the class called Vanquisher and had abilities like Arbiter traps/turrets etc.

Anyway the Engineer should have been made a soldier class because of the large number of warlike abilities it has instead of a scout because we’d have alot more of the better beefier looking armor pieces to choose from if we had been given that selection instead. The Armor and hammer would have definitely been early choices if we had been made soldier and I think we’d look much beefier if we had.

On topic, if we don’t get a fix for hobosacks by the next feature patch I’ll be finally leaving this game behind and seeking adventures elsewhere because it’s telling when something so simple hasn’t been fixed this long now, I have plenty of other bugs that bother me like for instance, I can’t name my pet on my ranger because the moment I switch pets it’s gone. Things like that shouldn’t have made it out of beta.

Glue not good enough

I was actually asking for them to make glue more useful like giving it the ability to increase the damage of burning or to give it a trait to make a tar zone similar to what’s seen in LOTRO with the LM class.

Alot of things like these could be used as zones which would improve combat and certain specs bringing this game out of the Zerker meta it’s stuck in.

PvE is the issue. PvE just isn’t creating the situations where players are receiving so much chaos (faster enemy attack rates, CC spam, enemies that kite, reapplied conditions) that they have to tank and heal because they don’t have enough dodges. PvE isn’t providing situations where they have to split up and hold points against enemies who have a lot of dodges and neat tricks of their own.

The problem with this is that it presupposes….

1. …That the current state of affairs is broken. That is not a given by any stretch of the imagination.

2. …The proposed solution actually improves the game. It certainly changes the game. Making fights more chaotic and adding unavoidable damage that must be soaked is definitely different, but its equally definitely less skill testing and certainly by no means more fun necessarily.

3. …people’s roleplaying desires (I wanna play a pure healer in a game where there is no such thing as a pure healer but still feel like I contribute) should in any way influence game design. By this I mean, it’s great that you want something, but just wanting something isn’t a call to action. Imagine a guy who played ice hockey and was the goalie. Now he plays basketball. There is no goalie in basketball. But he wants to use the goalie skill set and feel like he contributes. How much respect do we have to give to his ideas to revamp the rules of basketball to allow goaltending?

That last analogy is actually in accurate. The healer in this case would be the catcher and Baseball definitely has those, there are also catchers on each mound on the way to home. So yes there is such a thing as a goaltending process in Baseball, even if it’s not like the rest Baseball is a complete picture of rules to handle all situations.

Unlike the combat in GW2 where you only have half rules applying here. You see GW2 would be the equivalent of having a batter, a pitcher, and several bases with only catchers out in the field way way past the score sign in the bleachers when it comes to trying to keep people from getting to the bases. Basically it’s an extreme, and it’s not a solid system because of it, there are several holes there where we would normally find rules to handle diversity so there’s a complete picture.

Ok, this is more addressed to Gaile or other Dev reading, but maybe it is time to re-emphasize this :

Mike O brien.4613

We want to talk design philosophy with you and hear how you want to see the game evolve.

From the “Communicating with you” thread.

This debate about “meta”, gear stat, and stacking strategy comes every second day on the forum and only ends up in empty discussions (I think) because everyone think that the devs wanted the game to be like that or not.
In the end it would be cool to have one of the devs (I think few years ago, Izzy wrote the blogpost about stats) clearly explaining how they see the game in term of itemization, encounter strat and if they are happy with that or not and eventually give an idea of how they would like it to evolve.
The game as it is now is a result of a long process of design (with several iterations) and I’m sure that there is a philosophy under the choices made. It would be nice to share them with us now.
Maybe some players will be disappointed that there will be an evolution of the gearing stats towards something they don’t want (or the contrary) but right now this is only players arguing over and over about the same topic without any real ending. If there would be a nice answer stating the game design philosophy then when such a topic arises this could be an answer to refer to.

Certainly there was a philosophy however why aren’t you quoting them when they were talking about itemization being a thing of the past a year before launch where power creep was very much on the chopping block? Why didn’t you look into the philosophy behind that when their philosophy was to make the stats you needed stickied to the spec you chose huh? Where’s that thread? because this system isn’t designed completely, there are several holes in it from a designers and mathematicians perspective. People keep spouting the false notion that they are doing something different, yeah they are, they are using a well established system of stats from gear but then making those stats absolutely useless by not completing the picture behind getting those stats which is the key reason why Zerker is the meta right now. It’s not the mobs fault when you put on healing gear and it doesn’t affect half your healing abilities or regen or even rezing for that matter, it’s not the mobs fault when you put on toughness gear and it doesn’t increase your endurance regen, or how about crit on condition builds when crits do nothing to help condis because of the design flaws there?

It’s math people, it’s all the same under the hood when you make gear decide what your stats should be, at least it should be on a well designed fully completed design for combat.

Making other PvE stat combos viable

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: tigirius.9014

tigirius.9014

It seems clear that Beserker gear is the most useful stat combo in PvE for a variety of reasons. (None of which are very easy to fix: mob intelligence, mob attacks, server limits on conditions)

Therefore, I’d like to suggest a few minor additions:

  • Healing Power: Add boon duration to this.
  • Condition Damage: Add outgoing condition duration to this.
  • Toughness: Reduce incoming condition duration (would synergize well with vitality)
  • Vitality: Add increased endurance regen.

Note: I’m not suggesting massive boosts. Just very minor benefits to each (like a percentage point per 21 of each stat or something).

Actually I was thinking more along the lines of what Woodenpotatoes said, which was make the stats more useful, like making healing increase your rez player speed, make toughness increase your endurance regen, and I’d personally like to see them make the damage output of Conditions increase with crit when they do crit, condis crit right now however when they do it’s terribly weak. We’ve seen other games have DoT builds in PVE and they treat it as a standard crit doubling or tripling the damage when it crits just like in burst builds but that doesn’t happen for condition damage here in this game.

They can encourage active play, which they’re doing, and they can fix clear balance issues, as they did with +Crit%,[…]

Did they really fix balancing issues? My condi Engi still gets no credit at world boss events and in WvW condi is now “op”, so how did this nerf fix anything? Genuine question.

Exactly my experience. Nerfing alternative builds never encourages gameplay it pidgeonholes players into a single gameplay so it’s definitely NOT a benefit at all to anyone.

They need to go back and fix the enormous number of nerfs they’ve made to PVE over the past 2 years in order to satisfy their E-sport desires. Killing PVE diversity and having broken mechanics in the name of sPVP isn’t a responsible move nor is it warranted, they COULD have balanced without ever affecting PVE in the first place but we are seeing that instead of doing the responsible thing in these balance patches, over and over and over again the nerfing is directly affecting PVE and that’s on TOP of the already broken systems on things like Condi stacking.

Sorry your ad hominem isn’t going to work this time. You see I have done everything in the game save for PVP. I’ve done fractals, I’ve done dungeons, I’ve done open world. It’s the same all around, That #1 spam exists in all facets of the game, it’s not limited to 1 medium of combat because the essential design of the combat is flawed and not diverse enough, When they posted the feature patch for example, we were to expect new traits that gave us changes to skills we already had, we’ve not seen more of those since that patch. You can try and make it sound like I don’t know what I’m talking about but the more you do the more holes I’ll find in your argument because this kind of thing isn’t something you sweep under the rug with colorful words (as has happened with loot and content updates) combat is essential to the game, it takes 5 minutes of playing a fully geared max level character to realize that there’s alot missing especially if you’re like me and you’ve had years of mmo experience. (and there are plenty who have had years of experience playing as well as studying mmo design who agree).

This problem isn’t the mobs it’s very much a problem with the state of the design of combat. In the beginning when we made these arguments against such a weak combat design people were all like “give it time the game is new” Well it’s not new now, they have the means to make it more complex and thus diverse, and they have the means to add traits to include new skills into the game we’ve just not seen it.

Even at the most basic level, saying that there’s nothing wrong with combat, is absolutely fundamentally wrong and missing the point. WoW has more complex combat than GW2 and that’s saying something right there.

I am really craving for a sequel to GW1...

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: tigirius.9014

tigirius.9014

I never played GW1 but I can totally see where you are coming from with the disappointment thing. You see I used to play DDO, and have been a DnD fan for a long long time now. So naturally when I heard that PWE was making a game called Neverwinter I thought oh man that’s going to be awesome!

Then the game launched and they don’t have dual specs and they don’t even have 25% of the classes available in DnD 4th Edition, imagine my disappointment.

So I refuse to play that game until they at least increase the number of class choices to 25% of the original and include some classes that were unique to the genre like Artificer (which in DnD terms means a crafter/user of magical items as it’s primary means of combat).

It’s the same for STO in my case, they included only minorly some of the lore, but there are several holes in their universe too, for example, you can earn Gold Pressed Latinum from playing Dabo but you really can’t do anything with it. In Trek lore all throughout the several series and books that have come out, people who had alot of GPL could easily buy ships, weapons, planets but you can do none of those things in STO it’s just there to buy holograms and minor energy boosts to ships (which you can buy already from other sources.) It’s not even a currency used in the formation of a starbase!

I think it’s a trend it’s not limited to this title I think that publishers feel they can just put out as little as possible and make a profit off of it and there’s really only 2sets of people to blame for that, the publishers and the apologists who let this happen by not only spending more money on weakly developed games, but also those who get in here and make it seem like our valid concerns over where MMO’s are heading in the industry (or particular mmo’s like in your post here) are somehow crazy, like we’re the ones with the problem for demanding high quality for our dollars. smh

I guess on Sunday we get similar threads all the time…

As to the OP, what HHR LostProphet said, gear and stats are fine in the game, the encounters need rework.

Actually no they aren’t they don’t really affect anything the combat is absolutely so homogenized that there is little change in the game when you choose different specs, for example, healing score doesn’t really increase regen significantly. PVPers should not be commenting on a purely PVE situation I’m seeing alot of that happening in these forums. PVE is terribly imbalanced it’s not fun, it’s not exciting, and part of the reason for that is directly due to how stats do so little to actually make choices matter in the game.

You can’t argue that away, it’s still here it’s not going anywhere just because people disagree with it and want harder mobs, because literally the people asking for harder mobs would not be satisfied unless they were fighting 5 bosses at time solo and that’s not how you balance PVE combat. Sorry to burst both of your bubbles there.

As Leo G stated it’s not one thing. My argument that happens to agree with Woodenpotatoes, isn’t that the mobs aren’t hard enough, it’s that the combat isn’t diverse enough. It’s not an unknown factor in this game that the combat is pretty much spamming the #1 button, that doesn’t happen because the mobs are the problem that happens because the combat is terribly bland.

One of the reasons for the meta we’re still seeing with Zerker is mentioned in this video, that there’s not enough of a difference between stats to make them useful. It’s why there’s a problem with even Arenanet’s own trinity being absent from the game entirely, because if you spec into any other build it isn’t as effective and it hasn’t always been this way, in fact when the game launched, you could spec into other builds and be fully effective. What happened was over several patches they nerfed PVE for PVP purposes because they didn’t separate the coding for PVE/PVE behaviors early on in the game and this broke many a build in PVE and it also broke roles entirely (and I’m talking Arenanet’s roles not the holy trinity).

If the balance team can go back and fix these roles by adjusting just how effective the scores are for support, and CC and fix the classes that don’t have adequate team condition removal, if we’d see them balance conditions so that specs outside of condition builds don’t have conditions and allow conditions to properly burst tick like they should while changing their setup so that once you reach a certain stack of conditions it will then become a condition that does a bit more damage but that also will allow for stacking over 25, then the Zerker system wouldn’t matter any longer because there would be other choices. Condition skills also have the tendency to not have an initial damage output when landing on all classes, this is a serious oversight in that it makes some classes weak even when using conditions heavily against foes because that class just happens to not have an initial damage output when using conditions which requires it work harder in order to be as effective as other classes that are heavy in the condition builds. The poison grenades for example, do not do the same initial damage that the poison rune does on my necromancer.

I agree with Woodenpotatoes about the combat and how there are essential things missing, like one of the things he mentioned as the ability scores and how little they affect essential things in gameplay like if you have a really high healing score it should affect dramatically how fast you can rez players even while in combat, defense should affect the endurance regeneration.

When I say that classes really aren’t built for the different specs and that there are pieces missing, I’m talking about it from an engineer’s perspective mostly. For example, the removal of the extra heal/condi removal with the Kit Refinement trait needed a replacement because without it everyone is stuck with the slow and often unreliable exploding healing turret. I’m also talking about how with the supply drop we don’t have an overloading turret or control of that particular turret (which is would be unlikely as we’d certain be able to put that on overload in the battlefield) to get it’s usefullness from the spray it releases not from the regen. Explosions are also a big part of the Engineer and particularly the Engineer healing build, but to a very limited degree, we’re basically required to be melee in order to heal anyone and that’s not the case for other classes. Other classes have the option to control where their healing fields land, but with Engineers we’re stuck with bombs only. I think this is a huge mistake in the build of Engineers, the Trait that gives us the ability to heal with each attack should allow ALL explosives to be used in that manner and the heals it deals out should be affected by how large of an explosion it creates. For example, Big ole Bomb should be allowed to cause an Explosive heal itself, and so should the mines, and certainly we should see it on Grenades.

There are other examples on other classes but other people have already pointed them out a number of times, the point is, the reason why we’re still seeing the zerker meta is directly due to the extremely broken up, and simplistic combat system for PVE. There’s several areas for improvement before we’ll actually see them working properly. Until we see a serious balance patch coming that addresses these concerns for PVE we’re going to continue to see a combat system that’s not complete and continue to see the Zerker meta because of it’s incomplete nature.

Watching until the end of 2015

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: tigirius.9014

tigirius.9014

I’ve watched these forums for over 2 years now hoping beyond hope that the devs would actually revert to their previous system of listening to the playerbase that they had a very strong system of doing prior to launch. I’ve waited to see if they’d actually take the time kitten many have pointed out in the thread about the new Forum Specialists, that they already have all they need to know on what to do what the players have asked for and what has already worked in other titles to fix the all too common issues this game faces. Now let me just start off by saying that this isn’t about me, this is about all of the suggestions that have been completely ignored by the team, not a single one was thought of when it comes to the most problematic areas of this game.

I’m going to be blunt. I’m giving it a year. I’m watching it a bit longer against by better judgement, to see if things change for the better. The reason? Call it curiosity call it kindness whatever, but I’m going to give it one last chance.

The reason why this sounds so final is due to several facts but mostly it’s due to an announcement today of a game that’s coming to the west that has every single thing I’ve asked for in this title over the past 2+ years. Housing, mounts, mounted combat, farming, fishing, advanced crafting, hunting and (even though I never asked for this but expected this game to have this kind of focus) best of all NO INSTANCES of any kind.

Now I’m not naming any names here but I’ve gotta say I’m highly impressed with this other title. Sure there might be a gear treadmill and open PVP but I’m willing to trade that for all of the other things that I’ve been waiting for in an MMO title. When I first bought this game the thing that came to mind with all of their early interviews was “man! here’s a team of developers that know what the playerbase wants and can deliver on it despite all of the whining that comes out of the various partycrashers” (that I like to call the 1%, the Apologists, and the Blind). But sadly something happened after launch, someone was lost or something happened to the game plan, someone decided to change the rules or something happened to the people in charge of keeping in touch with the players, because suddenly, it all went downhill and has stayed there ever since.

I’m giving it a year, here’s to hoping something anything comes out of the Forum Specialists and the next Feature Packs because quite frankly, I can’t imagine more of the same.

The trick is that people are realizing ‘marginally better’ just isn’t worth the dullness and aggro. There are always people who care about minutia like whether people are ABSOLUTELY META OR NOT it’s good for them to isolate themselves.

GW2 content isn’t hard enough that meta actually matters.

Actually what’s ironic is that it doesn’t have to be hard in order for it to have fun cerebral combat requirements. Choices that affect the outcome of the combat in this game are simply set on the scores instead of the skills. If they had way more skills say double the amount they have now per weapon per class per trait choice, then maybe they’d come close. They also have simplistic combat in which there is nothing that changes skills up for various purposes ie making a skill freeze instead of catch something on fire, causing a zone (like glue gun for example) to increase damage of a fire effect, making lightning affects increase considerably in water, the list is long.

This isn’t just a problem with this game either. It’s been going on now for a while and the ironic part (that I didn’t mention in the last paragraph) is this. Those who keep asking for things to be harder are actually contributing to the problem of the dumbed down combat. They don’t want combat to be complex because then they’d actually have to think, instead they opt for simpler combat and then ask for things to be harder because they don’t have to think (which is the ironic part) so the hardcore crowd is actually causing the playing field to be more and more dumb as time goes on. Ask yourself this. When was the last time you saw a game in which backstabbing, traps, or bomb ambushes mattered in combat? I’ve not seen on in years!

So long as this is the universal meme of mmo combat so long as players are content with the basic simplistic combat choices this meme will remain the same in every game, every mmo has their simplistic brainless combat spec in it and it’s because of the lack of choices.

Questions on the Guild Wars 2 Forum Specialists Program

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: tigirius.9014

tigirius.9014

So I’ve mentioned a few times that I think this program won’t be very successful unless the devs are allowed to share details about the future of the game, since the majority of common issues on this forum pertain to future releases. Eg:

  • Will we see new dungeons?
  • Will there be new professions?
  • Is a new race coming?
  • Will [feature X] be implemented?
    etc etc

These are questions that the devs are forbidden to answer. So I’d like to ask:

How does the Forum Communication Team see this program working out?

What sorts of player-developer interactions do you see happening as a result of this? What types of posts do you see benefiting from the addition of FS? In what ways will the program improve communication?

Maybe I’m missing something?

something I’d like to know myself because as I posted before we’ve seen various programs over the past 2+ years to communicate the desires of the playerbase to the devs with no tangible changes to the game that were related to anything that the playerbase was asking for. And further whenever something that was unrelated unnecessary was worked on that had no barring on the concerns of the community which has happened multiple times now, the last of which was the gem conversion, it took a protest across the net to actually get these items changed back so that it didn’t negatively affect gameplay.

I agree with one of the posters on here who said that this just seems like another delay tactic to give people hope but then not deliver on what was communicated again.

How much hope can one have if players can’t get information from the developers because of a gag order?

As you will see in the News and Announcements Sub-Forum, we are introducing a new program for the forums. Please review the announcement and post any question you may have here.

Thank you.

this program is only going to work if you do the following…

1. start being transparent.
2. open a public testing realm.
3. actually start pumping out aaa quality content, updates, fixes, changes… on a regular basis.

anything short of the above three will be seen as another stalling tactic (cdi) while the game remains “substantial development” starved and we are constantly given the “umm, we can’t talk about it again”.

edit-additionally, i don’t know why a program like this would be necessary considering we have been told that the developers read the forums despite lack of comments.

Absolutely agree with you swagger. What exactly are we going to see from the devs when this starts, because so far we’ve had three different programs to communicate with the devs from prelaunch, and all three have been all but ignored.

I still think that the system that allows posting suggestions in the game is far more valuable as a metrics system than a player council and the reason why isn’t just the concerns over the possible abuse of the situation, It’s also about the current situation of the suggestions. You see we’ve tried all kinds of things to talk to the devs. QA’s CDI threads, contacting them on Reddit, the Suggestions folder, youtube.

Exactly how will this improve the process of the suggestions that are in fact vital to the function of the game (ie feature updates to modern standards like multi-spec, outfitter, spec switching, auto-spec switching for things like underwater combat when swimming status is detected) when we’ve tried for years to get their attention about these missing items that have become essential to every themepark mmo out there free or sub? Can we expect a faster paced feature update with this new process in place? can we expect a new line of communication to be formed with the playerbase with the onset of this new project when they begin gathering data from the community? Or will this turn out to be another delay in the processes of both updating the game and improving relations with the community?

So now you make a special forum rank for people who do what some of us are already doing for quite a while ? I don’t really get why. You should atleast reward them for their voluntary work they put in.
It’s obviously no job for me even though i am always browsing the forums.
Good luck to all who apply, hope the right ones get chosen.

That’s been my concern will the right ones be chosen, people who might not have the best intentions for the game or who are focused solely on what they want to a degree that’s even more toxic then the imbalance caused by the favoriting of classes when balance patches come out will happen once again. Will they represent everyone because we’ve already seen how there doesn’t seem to be a focus on fixing the main portions of the game that everyone has to go through in order to enjoy anything max level.

I’m confused by your response, tigirius.

On the one hand, you don’t feel the player should have to log into the game, or, at least, not regularly, and, on the other hand, you want the player to use in-game reporting of feedback.

That would suggest having to log into the game. Confusing. =)

I was thinking that maybe instead of a player council they could use an in game feedback tool which would be A: directly read by the devs bypassing any lengthy process that comes with dealing with player councils or any attempts at ignoring certain things B: the metrics could be published for the players to see what was the most requested item to be fixed first C: could be tracked and categorized easily and automatically mostly by the software and would eliminate the need to sift through months of posts in the forums which tend to be repeats of things we’ve already asked for as a community located in the archive suggestions folder.

They were exclusive not meant to be done at the same time as sort of an either or concern.

Could you please break down the roles you are looking for? While the 2 examples are fine, I think some of us interested would like to know the breakdown of section you’re interested in. For example is a “Forum Specialist – Guild Wars 2 Discussion” a specialist group?

We’re looking for someone with a less general view, someone who has a particular area in which s/he has developed expertise. It might be a specific profession, dungeons, PvP, crafting… we would not be looking for someone to serve as a generalist.

That leaves me out then. This is kind of sad, especially since general discussions is one of the more communication areas that gets a lot of feedback. Oh well, good luck!

Except since general discussions is a catch all, having specialists is various areas within it is needed, especially with all the current boards being merged into that one.

As I posted in my reply Gaile, even with the ruleset you have put in place, people will most likely try to even with the best of intentions, improve the game for their own purposes or community. I think because of that fact, that you should designate each 5 people to be specialists in the community they represent. That they do actually focus on these particular parts of the game in which they play often. It should definitely be evenly spread out each time there is a selection process yes.

There’s only one problem I have with this. The requirement that they be actively playing the game and here’s why. In every title, the reason why people stop playing is directly due to some terrible practice of the development team that has crashed and burned the part of the game that made the game fun for the players. When this occurs it’s a common practice to not login not because they are protesting or because they simply don’t have the time but because whatever the development team did or didn’t do to make the game less fun has caused a rift in the experience of the player.

I can see them logging in once a week if necessary but having only people who login everyday who are 100% all the time cheerful about the game’s development is where I see this going and as we all know, this is already being handled by the blinded media that continues to put out rainbow and sunshine and unicorn reports about this title instead of talking about the real issues so you already have that side covered.

I think the suggestion and practice that’s already in place by many games and their development team, to have an in game system of categorizing and accepting responses from players and feedback on improvements should be in place. I am appreciative that you all are looking for solutions but I can tell you that sometimes even with the best intentions even the player council (which is how I see this) can be ignored on major issues especially when there’s such a large number of things to repair in a game that’s been out this long.

The suggestion practice would be a button in game to submit feedback for improvements, it would have a popdown menu for which aspect of the game to improve and any subcategories in a secondary menu. It would then have a brief 600 character or 1000 character field to post the improvement thought of. This data could easily then be compiled and sent directly to the developers so they can see the most popular requests instantly.

I think if you put together a team, that’s fine, but one of the first things I’d have that team do is go through the archived suggestions folder because as we’ve all seen posts in these forums that are new suggestions are just repeats of the same requests that have been mentioned since the game’s launch. If we start there, you’d have done the ground work on many of the requests players are repeating even today and it would save your team time.

I do however like the idea of a temporary position, that part is very good in the sense that sometimes the same people in the same spot will corrode the process.

One thing I didn’t read there in your linked post however Gaile is when the selection is done will these people be from all walks of mmo life because the other issue I can totally see coming from this would be a team of all E-Sports enthusiasts which would do absolutely nothing for all other aspects of gameplay including WvW, PVE dungeons, PVE open world, RP, the players who prefer non-combat activities, and the new 1% addition of raiders. Everyone should be represented in this team?

switch build on the run?

tigirius.9014

Nope. This was another of the suggestions folder items that never got considered. Not only did people ask for an outfitter style system, but they asked for multi-spec and a button to switch between them on the minibars below (along with a button for minis, outfits, consumables etc etc etc the list was long and was long ignored sadly).

In the balance section there were some requests to get some more +movement rune options in order to distribute the cost a bit considering certain rune sets now cost a crazy amount of gold which harms players new ones mostly ( especially if they have + to run speed on them. )

Sad that I, someone who doesn’t work for Anet, can rattle off suggestions from the archive from memory, yet the team can’t seem to remember these things from year to year when planning feature patches?

Two things. If they actually added a means to get full sets they’d finally have to adjust crafting so it’s not so much of a chore, that alone makes me support your request.

Second, everything is RNG in this game, RNG died in 2004 it’s not longer a valid system and is riddled with holes, it should be scorned by every veteran player, so if this helps them along in getting rid of some of that as well I’m all for it. Most of the games you named in your post OP all updated their currency systems to work like the Karma system originally worked here. Anet needs to go back to using Karma to get the gear people are seeking. It’s simple, adapt.

I’m seeing alot of folks here who need reading comprehension lessons especially considering you quoted me and that’s not at all what I was saying Rasimir.

The sentence in question is “they label those of us who spent alot of time trying to improve the game by requesting things that would have increased the fun factor, trolls” That sentence right there isn’t about the devs not taking my personal suggestions and using them as you seem to be adding words and context to what I was saying, that sentence was specifically about how people don’t even bother checking the past postings of the people like me who are complaining, and rightly so, by acting like we haven’t taken the time necessary to provide solutions to the problems. The problem is also, that since the archiving of the suggestions folder, no one’s and I repeat this for people like Rasimir, who need help understanding, no one’s suggestions on the major issues this game faces in the archived folder are being taken seriously. That’s the secondary situation going on. I’m talking fixes to combat, balance issues in PVE, rewards systems, alternative/non-combat activities.

There were also several suggestions (not posted by me Rasimir) that would have given them a much more organized system of getting suggestions outside of theforums and inside the game which btw has been used by other games in the past which has vastly improved their communication with their playerbase.

It seems you are saying the reason the Suggestion ‘folder’ (I assume you mean sub-forum) was archived is because the Devs were not interested in the suggestions found there.

It was announced that the reason for archiving the Suggestion sub-forum was to aid the Devs by letting them find suggestions and feedback in the sub-forum that the Devs were affliated with. Audio suggestions in the Audio sub-forum, Mesmer suggestions in the Mesmer sub-forum, etc., etc. This way the Devs didn’t have to peruse dozens of suggestions that were completely out of their realm of expertise.

I don’t think there was any real iniquitous reasoning behind it.

Except for two things. There’s a system that could have been used inside the game to archive the suggestions so much more efficiently and effectively that they refuse to use, the suggestions that new people keep churning out that are also being ignored are repeats over and over of things already found in the suggestions archive.

So while it’s true that’s what they announced, they really haven’t taken the time to make it possible to make these suggestions in a more useful manner to organize them properly or give players a direct line to the devs, and instead chose to keep these suggestions in a medium that they’ve already shown that they rarely if ever pay attention to in the first place.

This system was also suggested as an alternative and more organized means of keeping in touch with the playerbase, something that this team struggles with.

But that’s only part of the point part of it is that because most players don’t bother with the archive they mislabel those of us who spent several hours posting suggestions to the suggestions folder that was suddenly never to be used and then they label those of us who spent alot of time trying to improve the game by requesting things that would have increased the fun factor, trolls. That’s the problem I’m seeing. We have a dev team who struggles with connecting with the playerbase that’s left, and we have their white knights attacking those of us who really just want the finally get the game we paid for.

If FoTM skins were attainable through a token system, a lot of people would get their skins and never do fractals again. I really believe this is true.

The opposite is also true. With RNG that could take years of daily attempts, I’m simply not going to bother in the first place. There are plenty of other ways ArenaNet could encourage people to play. Forced RNG only leads to burnout.

Then the question becomes which is more effective.

So, what’s your point here Vayne?

You think game designers should create content locked behind RNG that causes player burnout rather than creating content that is rewarded properly so that players want to play it more? Every other dungeon in the game allows you to buy skins with tokens, why not fractals?

I don’t see how burning players out of any aspect of the game is a good idea.

My point is there are no easy answers. That’s my point. Everything seems good on paper. Make champions more rewarding, gave birth to the Queen’s deal champ train, which caused quite a few people problems.

Every change that seems easy and reasonable may very well have other consequences. That’s my point. People who program for a living probably know better, which is why so many “good” suggestions aren’t leapt upon.

Unfortunately for you Vayne there are several easy answers to the problems we’re facing in multiple areas of the game the problem is is that they can’t be monetized so they are being ignored.

For example, the code to turn off hobosacks on our own personal view (which isn’t turning it off completely for the rest of the players just your own view) has been explored and explored by several programmers and well known as an easy solution so that players who don’t want to see that on their own toon while playing can adjust it by using an added toggle in the armor pane. Another example is the total immunity from CC that champions have, several other titles with similar combat have only temporary immunity that is not instantly reset whenever a CC is used again, what does this mean? There is a limit to the bosses/champs immunity to CC giving players the ability to make strategy which cannot be done currently.

So While you might have good intentions in defending the practices of ignoring several months of the suggestions folder and the repeated suggestions that have been going on since the suggestions folder has been archived, it’s safe to say that it’s not standard practice and that it’s definitely not responsible action on the part of the devs.

I’d also like to point out that this kind of post is exactly the reason why people stop listening to you, because despite all of the evidence to the contrary you’re still thinking with rainbows and unicorns when it comes to what’s going on with this title from a managerial standpoint and a business standpoint. Unfortunately, sometimes devs and their managers need to buckle down and make the game better by releasing those fixes that have long plagued the game even if it means losing money because it’s well past time. Trust me it’s well past time for PVE combat to be fixed, for condition stacking to be fixed etc etc etc, the list is long.

And finally, I’ve not come here to annoy people, these are serious consumer concerns and the fact that the suggestions folder has been archived permanently is telling of a larger problem especially with the recent silence. Trying to suggest that those of us, who are expressing those concerns in a manner that’s not irate but more disappointed, are somehow simply should not be heard because people don’t like the negative and people think that’s all we do is just another logical fallacy and it needs to be outed for what it is.

Plenty of other titles actually have solo dungeons in various forms. They even have 2-3 man scalable ones. LOTRO, Rift, WoW all doing great with them, I don’t think you’ll see them here however not because it’s not a great idea and not because it hasn’t already been suggested in the suggestions folder some time ago, but because they couldn’t monetize it. A good example of this would be how they made it so that unless you login and do a certain number of quests when they released LS 2 missions, you will have to pay 200 gems to unlock them. See where this is heading? One can hope but I’m just not certain what the goals are here anymore.

I just wanted to take a moment to point out something because I keep seeing this meme be repeated over and over again in these forums every time something anything of importance pops up for the community to discuss. There seems to be a misunderstanding on the part of the newcomers to the game (possibly some of the veterans too) , they think that because some of us here are A: generally angry at what’s going on B: simply trying to inform folks about what we see C: trying to vie for the attention of the devs for no other purpose than to finally at long last get the game we all paid for, that this somehow makes us all trolls.

These newcomers and even some of the older players here on the forums have somehow decided that those of us who are here complaining haven’t put in the proper time discussing solutions to the problems at hand. Nothing could be further from the truth. And I don’t speak solely for myself there are plenty of others who like me are slowly (not quickly) becoming fed up with the situation after many of our suggestions have gone down the toilet.

If you look at the postings for the accounts of the people who have been here complaining recently I’m sure you’ll find plenty of early posts describing great solutions some of them already in other game titles that have thrived for years with large and sometimes ever-growing populations. These suggestions weren’t placed there by people who hate the game. They certainly wouldn’t have taken the time to write such large explanations for what they mean. They weren’t placed there by trolls or by people who have nothing better to do with their time but complain as many people have recently accused us all of. They were solutions to the problems this game faces without change. There’ve been several posts in the suggestions folder from popular game personalities and reviewers who took the time as they often do to post gameplay videos of this very game online. Some of them you’ll recognize but even these personalities have pointed out the same exact things we’ve all been saying about how terrible some of these decisions (or lack thereof) have been of late and have expressed concern that this title might be heading in a bad direction soon.

I just wanted to put this out there because if your first instinct is to jump on some “oh lord he must be a hater” bandwagon you might wanna check the history of the person you’re accusing because I’m very sure that there’s a large number out there that are wrongly accused for the sake of the fanboy pride. Sure there are trolls but you had better be certain. Many of the suggestions have been repeated by new players who came into the game late say around 1.5 years into the game who saw the same exact problems and solutions. I know I’ve sat back and smiled at the number of times certain things were repeated even long after the suggestions folder was “archived” which I still feel is a nice way of calling the trash can.

The suggestions folder was packed full of solutions to just about every problem this game has had over the past two years and would have made the game immensely more pleasurable for everyone had they been considered instead of tossed in the garbage. (And no I’m not talking about mine alone there were hundreds of posts in the beginning some completely new ideas and some excellent examples of what has worked for other similar titles in the past.) I just had to toss that out there because I’m seeing this misconception daily now in every post, it’s almost become a meme at this point it really has. “Oh you have a complaint about GW2 you must instantly be a troll” is what I’m seeing whenever someone says anything anything at all in the forums these days that’s not always on the positive side of things. It’s really sad that people haven’t taken the time to find out for themselves what posts the person has put out there in order to improve the game before they are instantly labeled and I’ve seen it happen to lots of people lately.

tigirius.9014

Anyone that thinks that they should feel respected and listened to as a consumer has a big ego complex. Companies provide specific goods and services.

Dumbest thing I’ve read all day. First of all, let’s start with the consumer thing, yes companies should respect their consumers but as we’ve seen here by this company, they don’t. They think we’re stupid (keeping us in the dark and then releasing the exact opposite of what was advertised and expecting us to just accept it, or trying to convince us that changes to loot [DR] are good for us or that they didn’t happen at all [see the message they posted about how it was all our imaginations during the 9 month long post of loot problems we were having in game on top of DR], they think we don’t know what we’re talking about when we tell them what makes a game popular and actually casual [as demonstrated by multiple titles out there including the elephant in the room WoW that converted much of it’s hardcore nature due to the demands of the population of gamers it was attempting to gather together and AGAIN it hit over 10million players so they must be doing something right], they think they know what we want but they haven’t really paid attention to the majority nor have they taken the time to give their game a well known practice of reporting feedback on features from inside the game so that players have a direct line to the devs nor have they even created a player council.) All of these actions speak loudly about how they truly feel about their customers.

Secondly, lets talk about the services they’ve provided for their consumer base. When this game was in the prelaunch/launch phase there’s a reason why they sold so much that they had to stop digital sales and it wasn’t because of the combat, or the dungeons, or the PVP. It was because they made it seem like they knew what they were doing when it came to the type of game the majority was looking for as posted in their manifesto and the numerous interviews prelaunch. Since then it’s very very safe to say somehow they lost all sense of who their audience was. They literally did an about face on the type of content people were buying their game to enjoy on a massive scale and they put into the game several problematic and fun killing adjustments in the name of profit.

And finally, one of the reasons why people like me come here to talk about these things is because of hope. Hope that one day we’ll login and see that there is a post on their news site about how they are terribly sorry that they never delivered the game they promised and that under new management they are going back to the drawing board in many aspects of the game to bring it around to what they said in early interviews and in posts to us 8 months ago. It might be wishful thinking, it might be childlike but there’s one thing it’s not, and that’s arrogant.

One of the best examples I can put forth to you about the seriousness of the ineptitudes in the decision making process that plagues this company is the most recent CDI. Their very sister company carbine made a game specifically for the 1%ers in which raiding was the T total focus of the game, that game is struggling now because he devs over there actually thought that the 1% loud as they are, would support their own community or a game specifically designed to help quell their own nostalgia. Now here we are in a game that was never supposed to be about dungeons or raiding that was touted as being the very thing that was against dungeons/raiding doing the exact same thing as Carbine did and they think this will bring in the numbers. Smh. What’s that phrase? Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. ~ Einstein

3 days and 4 pages with no reply have Gaile forsaken us?

Never! I was in England for a few days. Lots and lots of meetings, and I’m sorry I wasn’t able to post too much while I was away!

The whole lack of direct communication now has me feeling like the direction of the game itself might be in limbo and that is worrisome. Isn’t it odd that all these new hires and ads for specific people (one would associate with expansion like content) have hit so far down the road, 2 years in? I think to be honest the silence is a way to keep us all distracted from the truth, LS and rehashed holiday content is all that is on the horizon for a very long time and if they do lay out the roadmap the fear is that many will simply walk away and stop supporting the game.
Think about it and tell me you don’t draw the same conclusions at this point. Why the silence, why the lack of a roadmap, why the lack of specific answers regarding things like dungeons, classes, traits, races?

Ok, here’s some info on these specific comments:

  • The silence is decidedly not a distraction effort. As Mike O’Brien said, "We’ve set a clear policy in the past year: “We don’t talk speculatively about future development. We don’t want to string you along. of the CDI threads is to talk with you about the roadmap.” If you’re not participating, you’re missing out on a means of sharing your feedback and a method that we may use to give information, when the time is right.

That’s awesome and all but I think some of the people here are asking the question, what about the things they already said were to happen? 8 months ago there were several promises made in the forums by multiple reps and we’re still not seeing a peep about things already mentioned. Why not give us a definitive answer on those things already mentioned. It’s one thing to not give us any ideas on what is coming next, but to completely disregard things that were already on the table in previous communications pretty much frustrates people to no end when they don’t see any action on those things.

Things like a complete revamp of rewards system, precursor scavenger hunt, condition damage stacking for PVE, and the hobosacks have all been quietly not answered by anyone on the team about when and what will happen. I know I’m not alone when I say that this alone has pretty much not given me any warm fuzzies about where this is going. It feels like November 2012 all over again frankly.

I can tell you Gaile that the CDI that was chosen is absolutely NOT the most important aspect to fix right now, list or no list.

This is literally littered all over the suggestions archive. Seriously. We asked them to put in the code into the game to both have direct contact with the players to submit requests about upcoming new projects AND to make suggestions on improving aspects of the game a year ago at least. It never happened and it’s sad too because that would have given them a direct access to demographics about what was the most important thing to fix first, what was the most requested thing to see in future feature patches, what was the most important thing people wanted to see in content and it would have eliminated the concerns some tro…. concerned 1%ers had about people who uninstalled the game having a voice in it’s direction.

but no-sadly they couldn’t even implement that even though it would have been for their best benefit.

It’s like watching season one of your favourite TV show over, and over, and over, and over, and over, while the writers state “Season 2 is in the works…maybe…”

Lucky if I log in to this game once a week anymore. The LS is a bust outside vets and lorehounds, taking a sitting or two to complete. Apologies for repeating a worn out forum mantra but this game needs a full expansion….badly.

A better analogy would be this: LS 1 was 2 episodes into the first season of the show, there’s the long delay before we will see episodes 3 and 4 (which would be LS2) and the wait on seeing the rest of the season is what we typically have to wait for between seasons on tv shows (you know those 6-8 months), there was also a long delay between episodes 2 ending and 3 starting and we couldn’t record LS 1 to watch it again, and they are being extremely hush hush about season 3 (episodes 5-6) even occuring much less if the show is continuing and who will play in it.

Meanwhile some of their shows from the first season have plot holes, obvious problems with the filming, and the quality is terrible when you play it the first time and there’s no one to report that to, no customer service department contact to let the producers know what’s happening with the show that makes it so unbearable to watch sometimes when a new episode comes out.

That’s a better analogy.

Just face the facts. The devs of Anet don’t actually care about the player base. Sure, you see Gaile posting on here often, and I applaud her for her work, but how much affect do you think her insight actually influences the devs. If you go to the engineer subforum, there’s a post with over 1000 replies about giving engineers the ability to toggle their toolkits. When a member of Anet finally replied after a year (Gaile) they basically told her they have no intent in the near future of changing anything. I’ll probably get chastised for this but I honestly think the communication team on the forums is just here to give people a false sense the the game devs are paying attention. If a community had been begging for end game content and more PVE, why would you focus on rehauling traits to screw over new players and then overhaul pvp?

Completely agree because of how the CDIs have been setup for the next issue. It’s really not following the original communication we had with Chris before and during the Feature Patch controversy because there was a long detailed list of things that the majority of players felt before and after those threads, were more important and needed immediate attention long before they even got to releasing Season 2 content because they were essentially game breaking problems including rewards and PVE diversity/imbalance. (which was basically glossed over with the newest outrage which was the Gem conversion fiasco sadly)

Those things were ignored by Chris and the team and their next CDI was suddenly Raiding, which is why I think it would be beneficial if this were put on Reddit to get people’s attention in a medium they actually pay attention to really because they aren’t paying attention here.

Even with my complaints however I am thankful for Gaile’s communications with us because at least there’s someone here letting us know what’s happening even though as you pointed out it’s not doing much in the way of getting the team to realize what they should be focused on next apparently.

Dungeons shouldn’t be included in PvE since they are neglected just like WvW, and sPvP

Just like LS was until something press catching finally happened. Perhaps it’s time for another press catching Reddit thread to be created maybe then we’ll get some communication on the PVE direction or any of the plethora of fixes this title needs desperately even if it were to be in the form of an expansion or not it needs attention.

As far as I can see dungeons really are getting attention at this point because instead of opening a thread on condition damage, or one on rewards, they opened one on Raiding and hired people in for the job. So really where’s the love for the other more important things plaguing this game?

They can keep throwing content out there but really this game needs multiple feature packs to fix major issues to get back on track, issues the players have dealt with for more than 2 years now.

There is still alot of players playing pvp…..Most only post in the pvp section of the forums. This update is awesome as it will help prevent 4v5 or even 3v5 ! and you get a say in which map your gonna play on ! thats Great !!

It’s still not what needs to be done to help save the game and to stop the majority of players from reaching level 80 becoming disappointed and halting their play entirely nor will it bring back older players en masse to offset the losses. e-sports just like raiding is a very small portion of the community. It’s not even WvW updates.

Thus it’s an out-of-touch focus once again ignoring the major crippling problems this game faces in the main part of the game where the majority of players play.

Then you truly are completely out of touch with your remaining players and you truly are not reading your forums. Seriously, even on every website that’s been pushing this news out you’ll discover that people are tired of the esports thing and we’re all waiting for you to do significant and sweeping updates to the PVE portion of the game, even pvpers in these commenter sections of these news sites are saying that enough his enough already. Even if it is an expansion they are all calling for a major overhaul.

In before someone says the word “Patience” for the millionth time. Seriously, don’t you think that players have waited long enough?

You will always find people that dont want to evolve. You ask for mount they answer with (this is not wow gtfo blablabla). This is why a lot of people leave gw2 and why the game feel some empty. Anet should copy wow instead of not. Mount, dueling etc etc is content that should be in the game since day 1.Wow is so popular because of the fact they have everything you can ask in a mmo.

They have a lot of pvp content, pve content and all the little feature like mount etc.
But i still prefer the gameplay of gw2 thats why i stay but the day anet open their eyes and begin to implant better feature the game will finally feel like a real mmo

Copying wow is about the worst thing Anet could ever do. Copying GW1 is more like it.

Oh you mean like when they suddenly made dungeons the focus on Nov 2012 because Nexon had influence on the game and the shareholders basically took over development? Yeah that was terrible. smh (ie It already happened thus the reason why people are complaining and pretty much asking for them to go the rest of the way)

News feature/balance patches?

Is there a fix coming for condition damage?
Will hobosacks be a thing of the past?
Are you adding new skills for PVE to offset some of the missing skills from previous PVE balance issues?
Will you be adding the rewards systems you are using in the two newest locations to the rest of Tyria?
Will you be adjusting DR or removing it so that people aren’t getting piles of skulls for their troubles?
Will there be any new traits?
Will skins from the past LS 1 episodes be available from the Laurel Vendor? (Like the Anti-toxin backpack)
Will you finally fix CC in PVE so it works against bosses?
Will you add post max level advancement like Star Trek Online’s Specializations or Rift’s Planar attunements? Or at the very least a spell changing system like Diablo III’s runes?
Is farming, fishing, housing or basic mounts in the future?

I agree with all your reasons but for some reason the devs don’t seem to be utilizing the beauty of the game to keep people here longer. Let me explain.

Mounts, housing, farming, fishing are all games the emphasize the beauty of the world you’re in. People have played mmo’s for years only to do these portions of the game and nothing else just like people have done for years for RPing.

Why they don’t add these features to the game to improve their retention is beyond me because there’s so much you can do with these four developments that work so much better than the living story because it’s something people enjoy doing and it’s not a struggle to keep people playing when you implement these developments.
