Funny thing is I did. I leveled a warrior just to discover why people hate thieves so bad. You know what? I have never been killed by a glass cannon thief. And since I find eles the most annyong class I’m now leveling one in order to discover how to beat them.

If you are annoyed at getting hit for a 7k HS… get more toughness. Also I have been hit for 4.5k by ranger’s auto attack with longbow. Nothing needs to be nerfed, you just need to learn to deal with it or adapt to it.

Keep in mind, too, that by design WvW is not about solo roaming, dueling or GvG at the southern camp. You can do those things, but the game won’t be balanced with them in mind.
well then i guess that settles that. it’s totally fair to have 3 classes utterly dominate every other class.
it needs to be balanced badly. idc if it was meant for zerging there’s still lots of small fights and lots of players getting beat down for no reason.

The problem with LB in general in PVP is if someone is moving Left or Right, you won’t hit them with Longbow, You can only hit someone running at you, or running away from you.
Hell even SB has this issue some times, but LB will always do it….I know my Thief doesn’t work like that, if I fire my shortbow, his shots will hit 100% of the time if i’m in range, LB for Rangers however… doesn’t work that way.
you have to run in the same direction as them and hope. usually within 900 range they’ll land.
i don’t know why people bring up 1500 range when they talk about longbow. number 1 is for zergs and PVE. you’re never going to be at 1500 in a 1v1 unless you get into a duel with another ranger. usually it’s melee range.
longbow in 1v1 is 3, 4 and quick 2. then you hope they don’t dodge. the only way to even hope to win most fights is to entangle and hope they panic.
30% pet speed is useless because pets still can’t catch up to anything anyway.
after being interrupted enough times you start to get annoyed. also why are you making a post about this? people were rude on the internet. it happens.
this thread serves no purpose other than to get attention. if you wanted to report them you should have just done it (although that’s pretty low) and moved on.

you’re absolutely right. our highest hitting skill can hit MAYBE 4k in 1 hit (it’s path of scars… and it got a 85% buff).
most bow skills are lucky if they do 1k crit in full zerk. now compare that to thiefs doing 8k backstabs, 4-5k heart seekers, and 3k basics. ele’s doing 8k firegrabs and mesmers getting 5k of each clone shattered + 4k off berserker.
yeah… we have a lot of low hitting fast hits that are easily dodged but no hits that actually hit really hard quickly. and don’t even try to bring up long range shot because we’re talking PVP here. if you even bring it up you’re bad.
rapid fire should do all the dmg in 5 hits instead of 1. why? because then you can actually get it out instead of landing 3/10. they can still dodge, but they’ll have a harder time. i don’t think it would be remotely unbalanced. the longbow auto could also use a speed boost.
sword hits 1-1.5k… my guardian can do that in clerics and here i am in full zerk with zero defense.

YES. you could argue that you don’t NEED to get them, but then you could also argue that you don’t NEED exotics and don;t NEED to level at all.
if you want to remain relevant then you need ascended items. period.
The next time your in a group and your fighting hard content and your group wipes or nearly wipes take note who is the last one standing. Most times I bet it’s the Ranger and the Guardian (maybe an ele). In my experience if the ranger is half decent he can prevent the wipe while the Guardian is capable of finishing the fight if you want to wait 30 minutes for him to do it.
You cant go by what everyone else does or thinks. 3 months ago all ranger except a small minority thought the 1h sword was the worst weapon in our arsenal. Now it is arguably considered on of the best.
Rangers have a PR problem. But that doesnt mean that, that perception is the reality of the Rangers capablities.
i think you’re confusing skill with the fact that rangers A) stand 1500 yards back and can run away and
are so inconsequential that they get ignored until everyone else is dead.
i play a glass canon ranger so let me tell you how these fights go. mesmer uses shatter and i die. the end.
mesmers have far far far more survivability with clones. a glass ranger needs to dump all their dps and hope the other person dies as they have nothing but dodging to save them. pets are useless because they attack clones and die when shattered because they have no way to avoid taking the dmg.
rangers have no burst. everything is low dmg skills that hit many times. i can put out 10k dmg with rapid fire, but that takes 10 hits and can be dodged incredibly easily. i use quickness to help with that but it doesn’t do much.
mesmers simply call a bunch of clones and then shatter them. 5k on each hit and if by some miracle that doesn’t kill me then they pop a reflect and i can’t do anything except switch to sword and try and catch up. not to mention their basic attack hits far harder than mine. then you have confusion too. i won’t even go into that.
so basically you’re comparing a lion to a housecat. rangers are probably the worst pvp class wvwvw atm. they are literally garbage.

pets get 3 shotted when they take direct aggro anyway. i think we’re a long long way from seeing them tank bosses. they die before the swap recharges when they take direct aggro.
1 guardian can solo kohler. i don’t see pets ever being able to do that.
I doubt that ranger will have any significant change in the future.
Right now we are:
King of open field PVE;
One of the best in SPVP (if not the best but definitely TOP3);
Doing OK in dungeons (although not preferred classes);
Sucks in WvW and tPVP.Over all, it’s pretty balanced. If anything improved in WvW ranger will become over-powered then you won’t see other classes anymore.
wow i hope the devs don’t read this post. balance across game modes? kitten kind of logic is that? “oh well rangers are acceptable in 3/5 modes and therefore they’re good” WHAT?!. they need to be balanced for every mode individually.
also i don’t understand why wvwv is treated like open world pve when it isn’t. sure there’s nodes and some mobs but it’s a pvp zone and should have the balance of spvp.
it’ll probably be 2014 to gear 1 character with multiple trinkets… unless you plan to use 1 gear set until the end of time.
annoyed? i actually get complimented on it more often than you’d think. personally i think it’s the best combination. orchid and maroon is nice too.

while i appreciate dungeon changes, my main focus is WvWvW.
it needs buffs badly. I would say even more than dungeons minus fractals.
Dailies are easy to achieve tasks that a time gated in order to incentive user’s to log in every day.

no. remove the pve elements and keep the pve players out so they don’t come in and waste slots. i for one don’t want to see 4 unflagged muffins standing around when i’m dying or not being able to fight because the second i do a bunch of unflagged muffins will flag and attack.
thieves stealth way too much. add that to the targeting system and they have a huge advantage.
they can’t have huge dmg and stealth. they need a straight dmg nerf along with the stealth nerf. this also applies to mesmers with stealth and clones and eles with.. well everything they have.
66% is balanced for spvp but not wvwvw? you can’t treat wvwvw like pve because it has enemies. it is a pvp zone for all that it has random pve stuffed in. it needs to be balanced around pvping.

Thieves are extremely good at preying on people who have low to decent skill level. While the very best players can counter a thief (which may or may not be true, but that’s a different issue from the one below), most can’t.
Is this a problem? Many thieves like to argue that “L2P n00b, if the best players can counter thieves, why can’t you do the same?”
Let’s take a different scenario. I’m a dungeon master – would it be appropriate to raise ALL dungeons to the difficulty of, say, Arah P4? Of course not; just because I can complete a difficult dungeon doesn’t mean that all dungeons should be made equally demanding – the average player needs something to do or they will quickly leave the game. What I’m saying is that the game cannot be balanced around the bestest estest players, same as the way that monsters in fractal lv 1 don’t instantly 100-0 you

Now back to the thief-L2P argument. Is it easy to Steal + CnD + Backstab? Yeah you’d have to be pretty dumb to not pull it off. How about spamming heartseeker? Even easier!
Now how do you counter this thief? Oh you just have to stun him, hope he doesn’t press blinding powder or shadowstep to get out, then do a lot of damage. Of course you need to dodge backstabs from someone you can’t even see. Hit the air and be a mind reader, predicting where the thief went. If they shadow refuge you’d better have some way to forcibly remove them from the circle or they will reset the fight.
Yes, the best players can do that. But can an average player? No. So why should thieves be able to destroy people who suck, even though the thief sucks as bad?
Sure you can argue that the game is balanced around the highest skill levels since it is a competitive PvP game that they are aiming for, and I’d have to agree with you on that point.
However when you see mostly thieves and bunker builds (to survive the thieves) in WvW, it might be a sign that balancing should be done around the masses, preferably in a way that doesn’t affect the top-end viability of thieves (should Anet decide that at the very highest levels of play, thieves are not OP).
TLDR: L2P is not a valid argument – thieves can suck and still dominate.
well said. i’ll add that some thieves say “use aoe” well what about the classes that on’t even have aoe? i play ranger and my aoe is barrage. that’ll be really handy vs a cloaked thief trying to get behind me and pew pew with a 6k backstab 4k heart 4k heart 3k basic.
Here’s a thought I just had.
What if we made f3 use a defensive dodge skill instead of returning to the player, and we re-did the “Guard” and “Avoid Combat” button to better serve the function of “return and Heel” and “Attack and be aggro”
So it would be f1 to attack target, f2 to use special skill, f3 to use defensive ‘dodge’ skill, and our stance button would then be tweaked.
this is much better and is starting to sound good which makes me happy. another thing mentioned is that pets often stray. in places like AC, the troll’s AoE circle is so large that even a recalled pet can’t get out because it doesn’t run far enough. they tend to come back but stop 15 feet short of you unless you back up and in many places that isn’t an option. having pets return to your side or behind you would also help a lot.
I just managed to kill 3 rangers on my own because none of them had a single stunbreaker slotted, and only one of them had signet of stone (the only one that gave me some mild challenge), then a Warrior came to finish me and rezzed them, they started using /laugh as if the poor Warrior finishing my last 4k health made the earlier fight less embarassing for them.

what class are you? because rangers are one of the weakest classes if not the weakest at wvwvw and they have 1 stunbreaker (i don’t even count lightning) that only works if pet is alive and it’s a 60s CD. rangers also have very little burst. i run a full glass ranger and i can say that it takes me 10+ hits to do the dmg these classes do in 1-3 and i have none of the survivability they have either (not even close). it’s a double whammy.
how am i supposed to counter a thief doing 6k backstabs and 4k heartseekers and 3k basics, or an ele with 3-5k shatters, or an ele with a 8k firegrab and multiple stuns? with a sword that hits 1-1.5k and a bow that can put out 10k dmg but does so over 10 hits that can be dodged incredibly easily?
the sad part is a thief/ ele/ some mesmers vs 3 rangers is actually usually not a fair fight (for the rangers). we’ve all seen the videos of these two classes running around without fear in groups of 10+. it’s utterly ridiculous and it’s been this way for months.

you simply cannot argue that this is their skill and the failure of all the others. no other classes can do anything close to this.
so I just want to ask when the real changes are coming. i like this game, but i won’t play anymore if it means another 3 months of thief/ele/mesmer insanity.
rangers necros and engis have been garbage for months…. MONTHS. wvwvw is a joke because of the terrible balance and frankly i’m sure i’m not the only one that’s tired of it.
so are we ever going to see some real changes? not icon changes for rangers and other token changes (seriously…) but real changes that actually matter and change the classes.
i don’t think fixing culling will affect thieves much. they will still hit way too hard and they can still stealth every what? 3s? 4s?
it simply isn’t long enough for you to target and hit them. thieves should have stealth every 8 seconds or longer. none of this vanishing BS which i firmly believe will still be BS if culling gets fixed.
they should be punished with nearly instant death for glass canon like every other class. right now they are heavily rewarded for it as they have no fear with stealth.
super high burst dmg and super stealth is just wrong.
Next time, just stay away from the engineer. To kill you with barrage in one hit, the engineer has to use grenade barrage from the toolbelt (which is ranged) and the barrage coming from kit refinement (http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Kit_Refinement), which is set around the engineer.
That’s how it works: the engineer goes near you, uses the barrage from the toolbelt and switches to grenade kit while it’s being casted, thus hitting you with 2 high-damage barrages.
The problem is that, to reduce grenade spread to 0, he has to be INSIDE your model. Yeah, even more melee than melee.XD
If you want to avoid hundred nades as much as possible, then just don’t go near the engineer.
i don’t think he ever got inside me but he did get really close. i was autorunning while typing and then blam i was dead.
i’ve been 100b’d, shattered, backstabbed, firegrabbed and nothing has every managed to kill me that fast.

you can’t simply run away from an enemy like you can with other weapons because it leaps you back at them over and over. even dodging fails a lot of the time. it’s really annoying imo.
Just turn off autotarget and click the ground (which removes your target) before you run away. Esc works too but pops up the menu. Someone else also suggested binding sheathe weapons to a key.
Having autotarget off hurts a bit with the bows, but it’s not that hard to hit tab to pick up a target.
yeah i know there’s ways around it, but it still feels like fighting a broken mechanic. i like that it has a small leap, but coupled with the root it is just too much.
also does not having auto target stop the terrible ADD targeting system from switching if you turn a milimeter in another direction?

removing the downed system would further buff thieves and other BS classes.
there i said it. i think the solution is to fix the downed states of some characters before removing it completely.
what AoE is too strong? the only AoE i think is a little too strong is the meteor shower/storm whatever but overall i don’t see any of it needing a nerf.
i have a glass cannon ranger with barrage, and it only does about 1k on squishy armors. it is only a danger if you stand in it, and since the radius is small you can just dodge or walk out.
I would only agree to them making a arena for 1v1’s if they balance the professions first. Otherwise, you will only see Elementalist vs. Elemetnalist, and on the rare occasion Elementalist vs. Mesmer. (Also, maybe a few lame mug + backstab + haste + 22222222 thiefs).
In all seriousness though, balance the professions before “fixing” or “adding” in anything else.
all the more reason to have them. we all know thiefs, mesmers and eles are in a league of their own. we’ve all been complaining about it for months but while they get buffed.
if pvp arenas helps fix it faster than i only see it as a good thing.
i just ran into an engineer and died in 1 second. i run a glass ranger so i know i’m really weak, but i was hit for 1-2k about 10 times by grenade barrage in under a second.
i’m curious to know what this is because i’ve never seen it before. i was pretty surprised when i was dead instantly.
