I think your personal play even in a loss has great affect on pips. I had a victory. Gained a pip. Lost 4 in a row but i scored highest for my team in points and most of the other team for that matter. Lost one pip. Next game i won and gained 2 pips. Won the next game and gained 3 more. So i lost more than i won. But gained more pips. Anyone else have this?

how many pips you gain/lose depends solely on the difference in mmr and/or divisions/tiers between you and your opponent.

i guess your mmr can’t have been that high to begin with …
i personally made ruby on a smurf account with zero matches played in 3 days. ez pz. the problem is if you’re a player with a rather high mmr you can’t just roflstomp noobs all day. everybody is playing the strongest builds (and many of them coordinated) if you get into higher mmr.

i teamed up with some low mmr dudes and gave them real time advice during the matches and carried a bit myself. got me half through emerald.
might be a viable option, dunno. completely solo it’s close to impossible to advance through divisions. either you face premades or you get clueless teammates.

nobody seems to understand basic english ….
if people can stand crafting or not doesn’t matter if they want ascended armor. many players might sell their mats off but at some point will have the need for them again once they want their ascended gear.
there will always be supply but at what price? as it seems right now players are using more than enters the market. this makes the price skyrocket which in turn makes the armor more difficult to get for people that don’t want to farm events 3h+ daily.

an example of what might be going on in somebodies mind (since actual explanations don’t seem to be comprehended)

“i want to play fractals above lvl xx / i want to play raids / i want to be on par with everybody else in wvw”
->
“i need ascended armor”
->
“i need cloth and leather”
->
“both are so expensive i can’t buy them with gold”
->
“i could farm low level events through all my playtime but i actually want to play dungeons/hot/wvw/whatever”
->
“if i just pile up gold it will take me more than half a year before i can actually play the content i want (after i’m max lvl, after map completion, after masteries …)”
->
“kitten this, i’m gonna play game x instead”

is this any kind of understandable?
and once again, i’m not talking about the situation right now. I’m talking about how this scarcity will influence the game several months from now. We went from Ø150k
to Ø45k in supply. Right now we’re burning through stockpiled stashes of powertraders that sell their stuff due to high prices. Once we’re gone through those the supply is gonna plummet constantly.
There is way more demand than whoever is selling can supply as the numbers show. look it up on gw2spidy or some other tp page.

right now it’s fine, i’m not complaining about 5-8s per scrap. But how much higher will the price go once the private stashes are burnt through and people still want to craft their gear? Recently several farming options have been killed (which i found out today) and the only means of getting this stuff are time consuming and unreliable.

in short: supply has been severely crippled while demand has never been higher (raids, fractals; -> necessity of fulfilling several roles therefore need for several gearsets). this will raise the price to beyond affordable which will leave players that want ascended gear with the choice of farming low level events for hours daily or buy gold with gems (exactly here we put on our tinfoil hats) in order to get it.
this might lead many players to preferring other games which give them access to the content they actually want to play without the above mentioned means over gw2.

how about we think about what the development is and where it seems to go instead of just staring at the right now. because at some point we might be staring at the right now and think “oh kitten, wool/linen/cotton scraps at 40-50s. how did this happen?”.

edit: actually … whatever. it’s not a problem that’s gonna affect me so i’m going to stop discussing on others behalf (or for the sake of reason). i have wasted too much time on typing already.

i assume you haven’t read my whole post.
at some point the amount of time that needs to be invested (4 h daily just for one damask? i doubt many people will do that. there’s also the need for leather and other mats) will scare off possible players. you did it in 3 months. as you said you did nothing but farming. many others will want to do other stuff as well. let’s assume the cost of those mats got so high it exceeds any feasible means of acquiring for a casual somehow new player (6months f.e.). let’s say you can only play 1-2 h daily. that way if you just farm your mats it will take you 2-3 days just to craft one bolt of damask. let’s even assume you also got your leather with that. now let’s assume said person wants to do hot, dungeons and perhaps some low lvl fractals. maybe some pvp or wvw. suddenly you only farm those mats every 3. day because you can’t take grinding the same events over and over for a month or two. suddenly you’re looking at a week before you can craft one damask/leather. given you also need a lot of other stuff you’re looking at more than 6 months before you can finish your armor. wouldn’t that turn off many people?
not many people will be willing to grind those events for several months ( be it 1, 2 or 3, not even talking about 6+) just to have access to the content they actually want to play. you’re a bad example here because as you said you were very dedicated. you’re the absolute minority here. most people will want to dabble into dungeons, hot, pvp, wvw and other stuff and most likely look for a game that gives them access to similar content without the need of farming low level events for months.
obviously it can be done. the point is that as it is now (it might be a lot worse in the future) the time and dedicating it takes to do it might scare people away from the game. especially after they were promised a casual friendly experience.

@pdavis: i know all the sources for the mats. however, the need for those mats is by far larger than the supply those methods can bring into the market in a feasible time. it took me four hours of only farming those low level area events to get enough cloth for one single damast. given that most players don’t want to do only those events in their playtime most players will not have enough of those to craft the given material. this applies to leather and cloth since wood and iron can be gathered directly (wood is just so expensive because people don’t want to bother gathering random spawns).
the remaining need (if not all of it) for those materials will be filled through the tp where the supply of those mats is declining. this means this stuff will get more expensive in the future.
and here we get to a point (as for fluffballs argument) where the gold needed for those materials will exceed the amount of gold that can be farmed even on hot maps.

i’m also not talking about the status quo. right now those mats are still kinda affordable. but with declining supply the price will rise. once the price has risen enough people won’t be able to gather as much gold as is needed to buy them during their daily play time. at some point even the amounts that are stashed away by power traders will dry up. this is a basic problem if there is more need than supply.
if people think ascended armor is expensive now i’m curious how much it will cost half a year or a year from now. we were always between 100-200k supply but recently crashed down to even 30k. since the price is high many people are selling (went back up to 60k) but those reserves won’t last forever. how much will people have to pay if we’re down to 20k? or even 10k?
that’s the big question here. at some point the price will be high enough so either people farm those mats through all their play time (which they won’t) or it will take so long that people will be scared away by that perspective.

i personally am not bothered by it since i can always exchange some cash for gold but will many players, especially new ones (that want to play fractals/raids or just max out their numbers for f.e. wvw) want to stick around with the prospect of doing nothing but event farming for several months (after they’ve reached 80 and even done most masteries) in order to get their gear? i think to many this might become a gamebreaker in the future, especially with gw2 being marketed as a casual friendly game.

and i didn’t even think about the fact (that moondancer reminded me of) that those mats are also needed en masse in order to even reach the according crafting levels.

i don’t think those option are sustainable. you can’t earn karma fast enough to sustain the need of those materials. also you can’t farm champ boxes fast enough.
the huge decline of those mats in the tp proves that.
yes, there’s always gonna be some of those mats around. the problem is that if they get too expensive crafting an ascended armor might not be possible for most people in an acceptable time.
personally i have to trouble getting another set but what about all the people several months from now that want to advance in fractals but are looking at several months of farming gold?

are you serious? like i said this is not a sustainable way. they will have to introduce new ways of getting the stuff or ascended armor might become unattainable for many players in the somewhat near future.
the supply already more than halved and even if from time to time there are 5-10k new scraps thrown into the system the trend goes massively downward.

i’m not sure this is how you make a stable economy …

so, recently i was on ts with my guild mates and the topic was ascended armor. many people were complaining how difficult it is to get your ascended armor nowadays. especially newer player complained about the lower tier mats. i never had any problems with getting my armors since i’d just buy gold with cash and then buy all the stuff from the tp. obviously i got torn a new one for telling how i got my ascended equip up until now.
so i thought for the next one i’d gather the stuff by myself. just to shut up all the people that say getting ascended was difficult. well, what shall i say, in the end it was me who was shut up.
i have done a world completion since then because i need the gift for another legendary and the whole thing gave me just enough mats to create 3 of each ascended mats (leather/damask). metal and wood weren’t too bad although metal was the easiest by far. i had no problem getting my stuff for ascended weapons with world exploration.
the armor is a whole other topic. like i said the world exploration gave me 3 damask/leather (mostly from bags or level specific salvaging items) out of the 24|36 i need (leather/middle armor).
i’m still persistent on getting the mats myself and so i’m making this thread to ask for help. i’ve tried the method with the mystic forge and karma items but that’s not what i was looking for since i wanted to simulate the experience of a newer player. obviously i got the personal forge node and several million karma piled up over the years so this method might be viable for be but won’t for someone who hasn’t played that long.
opening champ bags with lower lvl toons is also out of question since a) i don’t have any left to level and b) this would kinda circumvent the whole purpose of the experiment.

so, what i’m looking for are method of farming lower tier mats ingame without having to use tricks and circumvent stuff by using the resources of a long time player.
i have tried farming several events for the mentioned salvaging items but after running a kittenload of events and stuff the returns were … well … let’s say they didn’t make a dent.
if you have any idea how a regular lvl 80 player can farm enough lower tier mats to craft one ascended mat a day with perhaps 2-3 hours of play time i’d love for you to share.
since i’ve never gathered the materials myself this is becoming a more and more frustrating experience where the tp seems to be the only viable source of those materials. however, the stock in the tp is limited and not a sustainable solution. if everybody uses the tp the prices will rise until there’s barely any stock left which will put an end to ascended crafting. there has to be a way around it, no game developer could be that stupid.

Actually, unless they nerfed this, too, it affects lost bandit chests in SW as well.

ah, i forgot this indeed since i don’t do much open world stuff.
however, i heard only the magic find from the map bonus counts towards those chests, not the overall mf. can you confirm that?

imo the best way to make lower tier mats available to max level characters would be the ability to salvage higher tier mats into lower tier mats. even with a conversion of 1:1 this would still be a viable option. this would give a little more value to higher tier mats and balance out the scarcity of lower tier mats a bit.

Why do you want 100% then if HoT is so boring. Dont understand..and you dont need much masterys for 100% either. Only hard thing is stealth gliding. So basicly u need 4-1-1-1 in The masterys for story and that weapon

you should perhaps actually read my post. i need the itzel poison thing to access hero points. that’s the one i need in order to get the map completion. this map completion i need for the fix-r-upper collection.
i also don’t enjoy having something at 8x% or 9x%. i want to complete those maps but i have no wish to participate in events or even stay a second longer there than i need to.
that’s why i’m looking for another exp farm. that may not agree with your playstyle but that is not the topic here.

@ ayrilana: i have tried ds a few times. apart from open world event being pure torture to me the exp gain is nowhere near what you got from the spider farm. that’s why i excluded events.

all i want to do is run around in a circle for a few hours, get the last hero points/vistas/pois which are blocked by masteries and than never set a foot into the jungle again.

Why do you rush with The masterys anyway? You dont need them, i suggest that you enjoy the game, do the events, exploring and you will get the last exp. Dont see The use of brainless grind for nothing. And after u are done, what then?

i actually do need them for map completion. i want the fix-r-upper and for that i need to farm masteries. i am not particularly interested in hot gameplay. i don’t want to do exploring i just want to finish those maps asap and move on to something that’s actually fun to me. open world exploration isn’t something i enjoy.

there is no necessity to discuss why anybody would want to farm masteries. the question is whether there are any other farming spots or not.
personally i will just drop hot and perhaps gw2 if there are not since i am not very happy about being forced into specific gameplay.

lvl 40 fractal gives around 2.5k karma if you’re lvl50+. i dunno if they fixed it yet but if not just quickly do 240 runs (around 16 hours if you find a dedicated group and don’t take any breaks) and you’ll not only have your karma but will have also made a decent amount of gold.

i personally piled up karma potions and drank them with maximum boosters back in the day (i have still 12 or 13 million karma left) but that’s no longer an option.

if you have too much money logic doesn’t matter. this specific gem shop item is directed towards people that either get a thrill out of the possibility of losing money (chronic gamblers, the minority) or have so much of it that it doesn’t matter if they lose it (cash cows, the majority).
a randomized system is the easiest way to milk those cash cows. once you have bought everything in the gemshop there is not much incentive to spend thousands of dollars for gems so a tiny little gamblebox solves that problem. every game has some of those and as a company you want to make sure that they throw their piles of money at you and not somebody else.

for us plebs buying gold with gems and buying the blt skins on the tp is cheaper and safer on average. at least when they’re relatively new and available. makes us dependent on those cash cows, tho.

if you want a bruiser scrapper is the perfect choice. we got blocks, invuln and other tools to stay alive while we’re able to deal one of the highest if not the highest dps in the game.
you won’t be able to compete with others scrappers without kits, tho. they’re the bread and butter of the engineer and this won’t change. gyros aren’t really useful except for a few situations (bulwark as oneshot negation and reflect or stealth gyro for skipping [and even that’s a bit clunky]).
in general i can only recommend trying engineer/scrapper because it’s the most versatile class in the game. you got everything except for very few things (group quickness [mesmer, guardian], group fury,group stability …. aaand … erm … actually i can’t think of anything else).

working for 18 hours nets you around 2000 gold. that’s two long shifts on the weekend for a legendary. that’s pretty much the only lucrative way to farm gold without spending half of your life in the game.

how do you actually craft vipers ascended armor? so far i have only found exotic recipes (via google). i wanted to craft an ascended set for quite a while but i have no idea how.

Short answer: you don’t, you use the MF to change the stats of your existing armor (total cost of ~100g)

Long Answer: There is an ascended viper recipe set. It costs something like 400g per piece and needs 20+ hours of account bound mats per piece. (Total cost ~2400g + 100 hours of farming)

well, that’s kinda demotivating …
since i’d rather keep my existing armor (and the runes in it) i’ll just craft some bullkitten stat armor and mf the stats.

since i don’t bother with the scribe at all i absolutely love the way scribe is designed for the single reason that i bought thousands upon thousands of pigments as they were basically worthless. now every few weeks (thanks to the soft gating) one of them will shoot up to insane prices as scribes level their craft further and further. very predicable and huge profit. it somehow feels too easy.
from a scribes point of view this must utterly suck, though. there is nothing to be done. deal with it or give up on the scribe.

compared to gw1 the humor in this game is obvious, immature and kittened. it has probably about the same amount of humor if not more but it’s quality has sunken so far it’s close to the planet’s core. it’s like fry and laurie vs. spongebob.
there was not one single moment in the entire game i found anyhow funny whatsoever. although i imagine a 6 year old might find many things hilarious.

if ele was too piano-ey for you you should let engineer be. it’s like ele on steroids. imagine you don’t have cooldowns on attunements and go back and forth all the time to cast specific skills in specific rotations in specific situations. in between you squeeze in toolbelt skills and whatever is needed for support/control. it goes as far as canceling certain cast animations at the exact right moment (eg #4 f.e.).
once you get used to it it’s not more or less difficult than any other class but well … you have to get used to it first.
if you do your rotations flawlessly you’ll have the highest dps in the game. make one mistake and it drops significantly.
it’s by far the most fun class to play but also the most carpal tunnel syndrome inducing.

imo it’s fine as it is. i can run around in spvp with 14-16 stacks might permanently and easily stack up to 25 while running a pure defensive build and roflstomp everything.

i’m kinda weirded out by where this p2w talk auddenly comes from. not being viable without the recent expansion (actually all of them, there’s just one for this game though) is something that always existed in every mmo and will always exist. there’s always this one stronger skill or trait or whatever that fits a specific builds just so well.
it wasn’t a thing back then, why is it now?
people would have had heart attacks from anger if they had played gw1 back in the day.
the fact that there are still specs that are viable without hot to me is kinda amazing.

the point of a guild hall is building a teeth grinding jumping puzzle that you have to beat in order to get to the npcs for your guildies over night while they’re sleeping. i don’t see any other point in having a guild hall than trolling my guild mates.
but i guess having a hub you can port in and out from wherever is also nice.

you still don’t understand. you could just create another temporary guild, put all your members there, massively lower the costs while still getting contributions from all the members through the temporary guild. once the guild hall is finished you disband the temporary guild and reinvite the members again. this way big guilds would finish the hall literally in just the time the upgrades need to finish.
the only possibility would be to add the costs a guild saved by being small to member-slot upgrades what on the other hand would make smaller guilds absolutely inaccessible once they already built a few upgrades.

any system that would scale costs for smaller guilds has way too many drawbacks. that’s why there is none, i would guess.

just make an option to toggle down costs on upgrades but if you do so the member maximum becomes like 5 or 6 or so and can’t ever be changed back. ez

i’m in a guild with perhaps 20 people and none of us has a problem with the costs whatsoever. we all realize that those upgrades are not supposed to be had right now. may take us a year or even more to fully upgrade the hall but whatevs.

on one hand it would take away strategic gameplay in the sense of leeting someone bleed out, on the other hand it would bring strategic gameplay in the sense of killing yourself to prevent the opponent (which has low hp and is suspected to drop soon) from rallying.
i have no opinion on this yet.

PS: people talking about fun in pvp want to make me vomit. you don’t play pvp for fun you do it so you can make other people lose. casuals nowadays ….

scrapper is definitely top tier. you (op) don’t seem to understand what actually wins games and that is holding points. being able to hold out against 2 or even 3 opponents for quite some while while still being able to score kills in 1v1 (and even 1v2) and team fights is a huge deal in a point capture game mode.
with proper rotations the jack of all trades actually is king. defending a point, healing and supporting teammates in larger fights (blinds, condi removal, heal, might), having strong cc at your disposal, being able to cover a whole point with aoe and being able to deal substantial amounts of both condi and direct damage all at once is so much stronger than just damage.
as scrapper i have rarely had problems against chronos, dhs or whatever. daredevils i laugh at. drop dat blind field and spam aoe at your feet and all they can do is uselessly hover around the point. only thing that regularly gets me are long cc chains from 2+ people and instant condi bursts with more conditions than i can clear (requires to blow me my cooldowns first tho) like condi mesmer.

how to avoid the ban: build a wireless “mouse” or actually a circuit that works the same way as the left mouse click. build it in a way that activates the mouse click when the circuit is closed (like in a real mouse). this is easily done with two connecting isolated (except for the area that touches) small plates of metal.
place those plates anywhere on your body accordingly so the circuit is always closed (between fingers, armpits, buttcheeks).

that way “you” are theoretically playing the game assuming given body part is defined as a subset of “you” (which it theoretically is).

if you manage to establish an uplink to a satellite you can theoretically farm masteries from all over the world while doing other stuff.

i get what you’re saying. the matches i have had were everything but fair, tho. in both directions. either i (+ eventually someone else) was just farming people from left to right or i had my team being slaughtered 4v3 or even 4v2 while i was dealing with the rest mostly on close.
it’s also not mainly about the fairness. i can deal with it if i have more decent players against me. i might lose, that’s fine. what botheres me the most is that you can’t play a “proper” match with newbies. all the basic tactics, holding points, rotating, plus 1 rotations, objective splitting and all the stuff that makes pvp actually fun can’t be done. it’s either splitting up to all 3 points because everybody seems to think they can 1v2 or it’s just a zerg moving from left to right. basically it’s like hotjoin. exactly like hotjoin. without the teamswapping tho. an hotjoin is something i haven’t done for a very good reason for 2.5+ years now.
that is IF the matchmaking works with the average mmr. however, i have never seen people play like that in ranked before. statistically i should get such players on my team every now and then, i doubt every new/bad player is afraid to step in ranked. that’s why i think mightybird is right and the mmr is seperated.

that doesn’t adress the problem though. if this theory is true then every ranked player (that didn’t care much for unranked) is exempt from playing at his or her level as they’re used to. sure, everybody could just adapt and farm through the lower mmr (which seems more difficult nowadays now that the chance of winning is kinda random) but why should we have to? what is the point of locking ranked now? it has been available off season for months. what is suddenly the problem with it?
will it be like that every time off season? if so i might just completely quit right now since i would have to expect being kept from doing proper pvp every few weeks/months. or is it just a one time thing?

ah, i didn’t know that. thanks for clarifying. however, i don’t really want to play unranked to be honest. apart from the slightest chance of playing “those maps” i already waded through that filth once, i don’t want to do it again.
since i now know why my matches are so awful i’m just gonna quit pvp for the time being. anet should adress this and bring back competitive pvp back asap.

just tried a few matches today and i feel like playing hotjoin. nobody seems to know even the most basic things about pvp.
people suiciding 1v3, people jumping around at far without getting a kill or decap mostly dying there, bunkers leaving close unprotected, people ignoring sec objectives or focussing so kitten them they give up all the points, people running around trying to score kills, chasing one person in a group over the whole map, duocapping points and moaning about your low score as bunker when you alone defend at least one point against 2 or 3 people constantly half the match.
i guess those people were in unranked because they would have been slaughtered by any mediocre team. every match i had was a total blowout, either for them or us depending solely on who had at least 2-3 people that knew the very basics on how to play conquest and who didn’t.

please, give us back ranked. or any kind of pvp scrubs are afraid to enter so we can play proper matches. i haven’t been playing pvp since release just to to play with or against people that have barely played 10 games.
i’d pay gold or even cash just to enter a que where i can actually play pvp instead of that insanity that’s going on right now.
