Was soloing last night a bit on my asure ranger. Got into a duel with a bg warrior. it was getting a bit drawn out as I think we were both bunker style spec. I would like to thank the IoJ human mage for just watching the fight, applauding the winner, and RTL off into the sun set. Very classy! Also to the War, great fight and thanks for not alt+f4ing out!

I HATE this, hate hate hate it. I love to go with colors of the season. For halloween I was in black and orange. For christmas I love to go a bright green and red. Why is it my realm mates can see the colors but the enemy cannot? Tell me it wouldn’t be fun to see a 5 man in bright red/green running at you around christmas? Pretty sure this has 0 to do with rendering and it’s just an idea they had to make it easier to see who is an ally and who isn’t because the huge red invader/defender name over their heads doesn’t give it away enough.

TBH i love this ability. Was camping out in EB jump puzzle with a group. No siege, just using the in game traps and then engaging after they were hit by the logs off the maze. Outside of all the whines about camping, there were some whispers about some epic fights and great 3 on 3’s and what not.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. Knowing who you are fighting and having a more personal rivalry with them makes pvp much more fun.

BTW its super easy to get names, no hack/cheat needed!

My 5 man rolls with who ever is on. War, Guardian, Ranger, Ranger, Ele or two guardins, or one ranger, one ele and a war, war guardian. What ever, it works well for us. We are all on TS and assist and do very well.

Yaks are the biggest whiners I have seen in all the match ups.

The only reason you had such a lead was the 24/7 coverage at the start of the matchup. Every night, weekend included YB were getting steamrolled in the open field and could barely cling on to their 100% fully upgraded towers/keeps/forts. You guys need organisation and better players.

I have more fear of fighting 10 guys from AoN on ET than 50 from TOG and I’m sure others from FA will say the same.

This isnt a Yak whine, its an issue with transfers that has been an issue since day one because they cannot work out guesting. People jump servers all the time and it messes the brackets up. Look at SoR. A tier 4/5 server jumps into the top tears due to transfers. Completely blew out the tier it was in and caused two weeks of issues as servers against them were dropped too low and blewout that tier.

Get your head out of your kitten and realize how bad it is. Of course you are the server with 200+ new W3ers so its ok… for now. Hows HoD doing?

It’s a perfect idea. Why? Two reasons: 1) The game changes in the way of nerfs and buffs. What works now may not on the 15th so you want to change your spec. Now your Legendary doesn’t fit your spec at all 2) You want to just change your play style and spec differently. Same as 1, now your Legendary is out of spec and doesn’t support your play style.

Sadly, like the rest of this game, everything just becomes same ol same ol once you get 80’s and exotics. Everything else is window dressing and this one window dressing is massively expensive in time/money and the luck of the draw.

You know, I don’t think its the ease of these games that are the problem, its the lax of complexity. I will bring up the ol DAoC here as they themselves likened it to that game. The levels of complexity it in were insane. You needed a special calculator just to make a suit of armor. Games today, this one included, is so uncomplex that it borders on toddler mode.

Complexity is good as long as it remains relevant to gameplay. I’m not sure that I’d call my avatar sitting idle while I play a calculator “compelling gameplay”. Same thing dps charts. Don’t wanna play DPS Chart. Wanna play game.

Guys, YOU are the crybabies. Just let the developpers make what they want and stop wasting their time with useless threads.

There will always be people saying “Hey, it’s too easy” and others “Hey it’s too hard” and others “Hey, it’s perfect!”. Who should they believe?…..

We should have Goldilocks play three test builds to decide which one goes live.

There were no dps charts really (just hard/soft caps that were known and simple equations to figure out crit over dmg cap). Half the fun of the game though was the meta and suit building. Min/Maxing in competitive end game was fun, not boring. While you might see it as stupid, myself and many others found it’s complexity interesting and kept the game interesting. How complex is WoW, its mass of clones, or even this game? Does that lack of complexity make it more fun?

Here, even the builds are bland. You either go with one of two builds (sometimes one like the ele, bunker or die) and use 10 skills and some off set skills, max of what, 20 if you swap out between fights. There is almost no meta at all in this game.

kitten 4 guilds, one 100 man, the JPN guild was 70 plus 2 smaller guilds. ET was hamstrung by an exodus. Yaks has stayed pretty much the same. You can see the wild change in score this week and in ET’s other pairings. Server transfers are still killing WvW . On top of that there is no real incentive for any but the top 4 or 5 servers to do anyting meaningful except to farm karma in WvW. No personal gains, no guild gains, nothing that grinding out a dungeon wont get you.

Being from yaks bend, I’m kinda embarrassed by how poorly they were doing. Just horrible zergers with no idea on position. They just run in and get chewed up. Killer play and positioning.

Much more bland now. No reason to upgrade stuff after the weekend. You will make more karma if you take towers/keeps/garrisons as fast as possible, and leave it with no upgrade and just back take it later for more karma. Really, why upgrade when there is nothing to protect than the number ticking which really only matters for the top 3/4 servers.

It should be handled the way many other mmo’s handled it. Perma stealth until you attack then a 10 second or so timer after melee to restealth. Done. You want to attack form the shadows, cool. Once you jump out of them I can see you until you slink back in. Get rid of the stealthing over and over. Maybe give them one get away oh kitten key stealth mechanic so they can hard bail once and be done with it.

Not sure how modern MMOs are coded but back in the day when I coded MUDs, to add one spell you had to update 4 files. That is with a very simple system and flat files. then recompile the whole mess and away you would go. I’m not saying they didn’t change just the drop rate but from my experience in the past it wouldn’t surprise me

Just do what DAoC did, once a guild claims a keep the guards will report to that guild when people are in the area. “15 Invaders attacking!” This is simple and easy and wont take more graphics (we already have culling issues, imagine another animated object on each keep and way point?).

When it takes as many people as it took to take one down while they are killing a d stomping people I can say that build will get some type of nerf. If not I predict 50% elementalist population in wvw soon lmao.

Not likely. They are the hardest class to play. You have to put in a TON of effort to pull off what they pull off. swapping out 4 elements and juggling the timers on all 4 while staying mobile isn’t easy. You are also looking at a low burst bunker/heal builds. Decently effective in s/tPvP but monster in WvW due to under geared/under leveled toons they go against.

The class is fun to play but the effort to reward ratio is very low, maybe the lowest of any class out there.

In addition, think of the loss of this experience: taking the orb from the altar and running it back to your garrison, all in the meanwhile trying to defend the enemy from killing your orb carrier and resetting it/ stealing it. It’s one of my favorite moments in WvW when an orb is on the move and it just goes crazy trying to secure it. By removing the orbs of power, we will no longer have this experience available to us. I highly urge Anet to fix the altar problem and put them back in (maybe modified)

This is the issue. They cannot handle the hacks at all. Such simple ones that many games have combated in the past. Z Axis flying, no clipping (really? no clipping??), speed hacks, etc… These should have been handled in beta.

Giving a team that already has the numbers to take all three orbs more health and other stat bonuses is, by definition, unbalanced.

This right here. Not only that but in DAoC they were MORE oped then here. Much more. DMG cap increase right off the top. Amazing that its not really balance but their inability to handle simple to stop hacks (no clip? really? z axis flying?).

Like I said, they better be adding more reasons to W3 or its going to be a ghost town. As it is how many servers are full now compared to a month ago?

Welp, no reason to W3 at all now. There is no point except the score board which is boring. Why take/defend a garrison? While I agree that orb hacking was out of hand, removing the ONLY reason to W3 from the game is going to make it more of a ghost town then it already is. Unless something in the upcoming patch is added to W3 for personal gains, W3 is dead.

I dued this with my wife and I on rangers (neither with exotics) and it took us like 25 mins. If we knew about the skip jump on stage two it would have been more like 15. With a pug you could have run in it 8 to 12 mins (he has a lot of hp). Unless you were affected by the storm I don’t see any reason you couldn’t have jumped on for a max of 30 mins to do it. There were so many in the over flows spamming LFG for it even sub 80’s (you were boosted to 80) were getting groups and finishing it. Not only that but you only had to VISIT the dungeon to get the achievement so you could have solo jumped in and out to get it.

I don’t get this at all. I waypointed around for all 12 pages of the book. I actually made money from the few mobs I had to kill along the way by using the AH. Sell off what you can, what you cant bust up with a cheapy salvage kit and sell that stuff off.

Just do it on night time, most sleep, you can manage it easily, as i did. And getting loads of karma too, i can be wrong but everytime i had someone next to me (expecially 3+ players) every door didn’t gave me any karma, popping just 1 mob per player, or a bag.
Playing alone, loads of karma per door.

When they weren’t bugged open, they were bugged to one mob/bag. Man, they can’t even get the events right without a laundry list of bugs.

I’m on SBI. Its super-easy for a group of 5-10 to avoid the zerg’s.

10 isn’t a roaming group, or shouldn’t be. 5man is what a roaming group should be. You can avoid it for a certain amount of time but will always end up smashing into it because of the size of the maps. Not only that but the same loop over and over is boring. I would love larger maps where you COULD cut supply lines (people running back to defense/attack/zerg) but here you cannot. Just increase the size of the maps or cut out half the objectives so im not hitting a yak/camp/guard/tower/keep every minute.

It is exceedingly, amazingly, super easy for anyone that is half paying attention to avoid running into a zerg.

You must play on a small server. With the bg’s being capped there are hoards of people floating around. The map is so small with porting and multiple exits that its even hard to kill smaller groups/solos trying to get back to the zerg. The map needs to be larger on every W3 map, period. Roaming is like running circles in your living room trying to avoid the tv on every turn.

So what server will you be transferring to middle of next week?

That’s the sad truth of it. Probably not the above poster but many of the band wagon idiots we are getting. The issue here is we had a killer match up, then one that was blown out of the water the dropped us into the wrong lower tier. Server transfers kill ranking. We will jump 2 brackets this friday and will get owned because we should only be up one.

Ya the mechanics for matching the servers so far has been like a yo-yo. Looks like the next match up YB is going to be in rough waters, since we are going to be bumped 2 brackets again.

This happens all the time, we dominate, go WAY up, lose the band wagon hoppers, then drop again, and the cycle restarts. Server transfers are killing it. We had a great close match two weeks ago that was completely ruined a week later by transfers.

Yeah, I don’t really get any lag. I’d also be willing to bet that the servers we run on are just as good, if not better than a server for a pay to play mmo.

That’s probably not correct. Very little is in house for them, the reset is EC2 cloud crap which is known to be iffy at best. Cheap disks that constantly crap out (they just had a huge outage two days ago). While the idea is cool so we have no patch down days, the bottle necks and low disk performance with those servers is pretty evident with the culling and perma stealth thieves.

The entirety of the server is not responsible for this. In fact, some of us were actively trying to get people to abandon towers and let both servers gain some ground in the EB so that we could encourage more participation from all servers vs. just spawn camping.

It sort of worked for a bit for Yaks, they took a few towers to the north, but then some people got angry at the suggestion of letting Yaks gain some ground, and zerged back. (they felt that because people spent coin on upgrades, we should defend everything to the last man instead of trying to promote some fun in WvW). I actually angered a few people suggesting we hold back a bit.

SoR as a whole isn’t responsible for camping and the like. Many of us spent the time doing map completion and jumping puzzles. There are a select few who felt the need to inflate their egos a bit but we can’t control individual players on our server. I was even told I was growing overconfident when I suggested we let GoM and Yaks take their respective corners of the EB when we had a 250k point lead that technically wouldnt have been overcome in the amount of time left in the week.

You guys could have easily left your spawn using the other 2 exits, but a vast majority of players felt the need to run straight out to the awaiting campers. We can’t be blamed for players who couldn’t learn to, you know, use a different exit and not die like a lemming. I’m not defending the campers at all, just pointing out that theres 3 exits to the spawn, use them.

I tried to leave the sides. We got one yak and one camp dead before this swarm of red names ran over to where we were and just destroyed us the proceeded to laugh like it was a great feat to kill 5 with 40. We just packed up and waited until the reset. Thank the transfers for your fun week. I’m sure they will stick around when you are not waffle stomping.

Sorry but as long as numbers win 100% of the time, skill means jack. The simple mechanic of downed state makes skill pointless. I can outplay people, and kill them but be unable to stomp them because I am playing extend. Their buddies can just throw bodies at us and then rez up the bad we just killed. IF they remove downed state from WvW THEN you will see skill winning and maybe just maybe make this game less boring. Also, having nothing to strive for will eventually kill the game. Period.

Think of it this way, would you work if you didnt get paid? I’m sure the job you do needs to be done anyway, and maybe its even fun. Still, would you go in day after day with no pay check? Same deal. The carrot on a stick design works for a reason.

Well there will actually be three colors to deal with, not one, but that’s besides the point. The point is there is a valid reason for the issues and ANet is already working on dealing with them. It’s driving me as crazy as the rest of you.

It’s funny someone mentioned lagdar – we had that in Aion as well. You knew when an enemy was nearby even before they showed up on the mini map’s radar or on screen at all. It was quite useful lol.

I remember being accused of using radar in DAoC and I never did. It was just easy to sit some where for a second and feel the load lag from a direction and then run there. Or preset up for an inc group because of lagdar. Useful was right.

All this QQ about server transfers, zergs, spawn camping is really neither here nor there. SoR is winning this match for the simple reason that Yak’s and GoM gave up. That’s it, period. You could have mobilized and kept pushing even at a point disadvantage during the week, setting up a huge push towards the end which may have evened the score, but you chose not to. At the very beginning of the match Yak’s pulled a huge lead which SoR had to fight to win back, you could have fought us back, but you chose not to.

From what I’ve seen this whole week, SoR’s main WvW guilds and their leaders have taken a nice vacation, the queues for getting into borderlands has been pretty non-existent, there’s been nothing to do out there and no one to fight. SoR has been weak in the field, mostly full of PvE’rs looking to get their map completions, armchair generals pretending to be commanders while fighting the grub in EB. Even though we held the map I would categorize our WvW presence as merely a police force since we pulled ahead. With a little server leadership and some dignity there was ample opportunity for Yak’s and GoM to rise up and retake everything against a complacent opponent, you simply chose not to.

Why would we bother being farmed by your band wagon transfers when we can wait out the week and have a much better match up? Too bad you didnt have people to farm with your 4x sized zerg, im sure you will do much better this coming week.

Caps exist, and prevent this outnumbered stuff. The only reason our zerg is 4x larger is because of a total lack of you guys bothering to enter WvW. If you guys actually showed up, the numbers would end up even.

Caps are broken. It’s been brought up before. One side can blow the cap out and we are not even sure why its happening, pretty sure it’s not supposed to work like that. Also, you know for a fact that neither us nor GoM had the numbers to pack EVERY borderland AND EB where you did. Again, enjoy your ezmode win, im sure this coming week will give you a much better fight.

At this point I wouldn’t mind waiting a few minutes at a loading screen while everyones armour/weapon/dye information is actually download in advance and put into local storage on my machine. They’ve still got to worry about movement, spells, players updating themselves, and new players of course, but at least this way one would assume the reporting/culling issues would be alleviated somewhat. A solution is needed because this is end game for a lot of us and it’s diminishing the experience.

not sure why it doesnt do this now. I know in DAoC you would get lagdar. When people came into just outside your clip range it would preload them thus taking care of this culling issue.

Yes, you could bring anything to it’s knees if enough people were in one area. maybe all they need to do is increase the zone sizes. That’s one possible solution. So much in one area is causing an overload of information. In DAoC and WAR the objects and keeps were spread out more.

Then they are send/receiving too much information, not compressing it, or are using tcp instead of udp. Either way, as I have stated, I have never seen an open PvP game have this many issues. Heck, even in sPvP there is lag from when a thief destealths when he hits me. Thats a MAX of 16 players and on some maps, 0 mobs.

Because the graphics in DAoC sucked. Do I really need to explain why better graphics cause problems?

Sure, explain to me how graphics, that the client (eg: your computer) handles, is going to slow down the servers or even blow out their bandwidth. IMO i think the issue is either the wrong packet type, them using crappy EC3 instead of renting a server farm so you are getting weird db lag or bandwidth restrictions, or just horrible net code. I mean really, it could be 100% realistic gfx and the server would still get the same information as it does now, just information. Color information, position, etc… no matter how detailed the skin is, the server is NOT rendering it, just sending/receiving information about what type it is and what color.

Their end game isnt WvW, its paid tPvP. guess we should get used to that.

Because 12 year old games have much simpler graphics and a lot less on screen to deal with lol. Come on.

since when does a server handle graphics? Your client handles it, all the server has to do is pass the color information. That’s it.

Their end game isnt WvW, its paid tPvP. guess we should get used to that.

I think the real issue here is there is no reward for team work. In other PvP/RvR/WvW games when the team kills something, they split the reward. It could work here as you sit on a point protecting it and the rest of the team is killing in the middle, you get some of the reward also. It would be perfect in WvW and great sPvP for defending a point.

sPvP is about point farming, so any type of point holding is pointless. I love to hold the underwater area in capricorn but after the first few mins no one comes by any more. We usually win because I hold it but I would have made more points over all running around capping and killing. Such is the life in sPvP.

The difference is GW2 is using physics computations in particle effects which DAoC did not. There is quite a bit more being computed in a GW2 30v30 than a DAOC 200v200. Just give the hardware time to catch up.

But its not, their servers are not doing particle effects, your client is doing it. I have a very high end machine and still cannot see half of the enemies. It’s not my computer, its their inability to handle their own engine or netcode. One of the two is ins’t working properly or its some combination of both that’s making it junk.

I’m still wondering (I wonder if sniffing the stream is considered hacking)if they are using tcp packets instead of udp and its creating a ton of over head.

Yes client do “render” but the server still has to track locations of all of that to send the information to all the other clients seeing the arcing Treb shot or what have you. Vs moving targets, that’s white a bit of data being manipulated. Since shots have to be calculated in trajectory to hit whatever.
To my knowledge this has never been done before. Previously you fired “at” a target here you can just fire in a direction and hit anything that happens to stray in the way during that travel time.

it’s just data though, DAoC had all that in NF. Like I stated before, something is going on. Either they are sending/receiving too much information or sending/receiving it wrong. The only thing I can think of is its loading info for the entire zone of what people are doing to every person in the zone. Other than that, I have no idea as there is 0 reason for culling in a game in this year.

They think “skill” is what allowed them to dominate this week. It’s really amusing. It was pretty much raw numbers/being in the wrong bracket with the newly transferred and then the massive bandwagoners. They flat out refuse to even acknowledge the fact that the huge influx of WvW players had anything to do with it and even bragged how good they were in the closed thread.

DAoC subscription numbers weren’t exactly huge but the players just seem to be pretty vocal.

This is true but in Daoc we didn’t need to queue to get in to the “End Game”, they had servers and the technology for everyone to RvR with no lag, no invisible players, small groups could take on large groups by good team work and a system which made you keep playing through their Realm Rank system. GW2 supports zerging and it’s the zerging which made ppl quit many mmo’s with similar open pvp content.

This is where I’ll have to disagree with DAoC being the “Messiah” of PvP MMOs. Early DAoC RvR was just as, if not MORE laggy than WvW and just as zergy (Anyone else remember zergs having to take off cloaks so ppl wouldn’t crash?). It took quite a while for hardware to catch up. I expect the same thing to happen in GW2 over time.

This was only during relic raids. Yes, i too remember having to look at the ground, take my cloak off, and /stick and hope it made it to the keep. Outside of that massive force though (200+ people in one area going to fight antoher 200+ defending) the lag was almost non-existent. In this game a group of say 30 vs 30 , and most of the toons dont even load… its 2012 why is this kinda crap happening? Hell, I could even see the color and different armor types of the enemy! Not here. That game tracked all the same stuff this one does PLUS more and this was 12 years ago.

Also, once they went from flat file into to an actual database, that cured a ton of their lag issues (yup, original daoc digged info from flat files ala MUDs.)

True dat. There is no worse skill in this game.

Really? Worse than the ele’s root? Sorry, when its not bugged it’s much much better. You can actually interrupt a stomp, something an ele cannot do within the first 9 seconds of being downed. I play an ele in WvW and a ranger in sPvP (turnies are a joke of bunkers and not worth my time). I’m 100x more happy with the ranger downed state than the craptastic ele downed state.

I’ve been doing a lot of hotjoin sPvP. sb and axe/warhorn seems to be doing the best for me. No clue for WvW or tPvP. I used to do sb/lb but i find the axe/warhorn give a lot more options on the small maps.

There are problems and yet it remains great fun. Many fixes and changes will come over the next few months and the basic premise is epic and pretty well executed.

This thread is all about throwing out the baby with the bath water.

People keep saying that but wants in this content patch? Paid turnies for tPvP… ya, thats what they think will keep this game afloat. Gonna be a sad day when there is 4 or 5 turnies running, maybe 10 or so hot joins, and a dead wvw world.

Actually DAOC’s 250k was huge back in the day.

Exactly. Every post he brings up the “low” sub numbers. It was a gen2 mmo and those numbers were massive. WoW changed it all by dumbing the game down and making it where my mom could successfully play. DAoC was the FIRST with a 3 way open pvp war where you had “forced” allies. Instead of a FFA style, it was team based. It evolved over about 6 years then settled into what it is now. It WAS revolutionary and held peoples attention for a long time. This game needs to take the good parts of RvR and intergrate them or the game will die out. Look at WAR which was wow/daokittene. Hows that doing?
