I just got a bye on live and it came up properly on the API, so I dunno.

Might be a really weird repro or something but I’m fairly confident that if there is a bug it’s totally outside my domain.

Good day, friends! Are you Faren well today? To answer a few of the questions:

8. Will guilds be able to buy favor with gold, like you can currently with influence?

You will not be able to buy favor with gold. We want favor to be a currency with value for the guild system in Heart of Thorns and do not want it to become trivial for some guilds.

9. What are the requirements to claim a Guild Hall?

The act of purchasing (funding) is done through the Guild Initiative Office. This will cost 100 gold and some favor. I’d like to leave the exact amount of favor to you all to discover on launch. I understand this interferes with preplanning for some guilds, but we wish to keep some discovery of the system intact for everyone’s launch day.

We do not expect guilds to be able to claim their desired guild halls immediately. Guilds will need to trek through the jungles and find the hidden paths to the entrances. And anyone participating will need to be able to enter the expedition on their own two feet. There is a lot of crazy things in the jungle and who knows what your guild will encounter on the way.

10. Will there be opportunity to complete unqueued upgrades after launch?

The upgrade tab currently available in the guild panel will be going away and players will no longer be able to queue upgrades. If a guild didn’t obtain an upgrade before launch, they will need to get it through the new system, as the queue system for upgrades is being removed.

As others suggested, if there is an upgrade you really want you may want to hurry the production of any queued prerequisite upgrades and get the upgrades you want in your queue. If you do not have enough influence, you can buy some. See the wiki entry on Influence for more information.

10. Is it possible to get a refund of influence for guild missions (and maybe other upgrades that will go away)?

We will not be refunding guilds for missions or other upgrades.

11. Can you explain point 7 in more detail?

Using one of the listed upgrades as an example:
Guild Armorer Contract will be renamed to “Guild Armorer 1” and will be auto unlocked for the Market.

Guild Armorer Contract is the name of an upgrade available to a guild in the current system. Owning the upgrade would allow a guild to speak with an NPC named Guild Armorer who would sell guild members guild armors and backpacks.

If a guild had this upgrade before Heart of Thorns, they will still have the upgrade after launch. And the guild will have access to an NPC that sells the same items as before. The guild will not have to unlock the upgrade a second time should they decide to claim a guild hall, as the upgrade will already be unlocked from the Market (though it will now be called “Guild Armorer 1” and not “Guild Armorer Contract”).

If the guild did not have the Guild Armorer Contract before HoT, they will need to obtain the Guild Armorer 1 upgrade from the Market in whichever guild hall the guild claims.

12. What are the Notary and the Market? And do we have to claim a Guild Hall for my Bankguild first to get back Access to my Bank?

The Notary and Market are 2 of 7 areas of focus for your guild to gain upgrades from (the others include the Tavern, Mine, Workshop, Arena and War Room). The Notary will be accessible through the Guild Initiative Office and the others will only be accessible through the guild hall once it is obtained. If you don’t have the guild banks unlocked before Heart of Thorns, you will need to get the upgrades from those sources after launch.

If looking for further answers on Guild Banks, you can find them in this post here: Guild Bank security when HoT launches

13. What happens to guild siege already built by a guild once HoT launches?

Any guild catapults and guild siege golems built by a guild will be placed in the Storage tab of the guild panel after launch. To access them, you will open the guild panel and navigate to the new tab named “Storage”. You will find what you seek under the Consumables category.

Thank you all for your questions! Hold on tight! We’re almost there!

Good day,

Back in June, Link Hughes shared a blog post in which he discussed Rethinking Guilds .

We of the Guild Halls team would like to remind guilds and their members of a few things in these last several hours before launch!

1. Activate any unused 24 or 48 hour buffs for your guild before Heart of Thorns launches.

Your guild will not be able to activate any unused 24-48 hour buffs for your guild after HoT launches. Any remaining buffs following launch will not be accessible and any time remaining on an active buff will be carried over until it naturally expires. This does not include your banners and feasts which will continue to exist in the Storage tab of your guild panel.

2. Activate and complete your guild missions before Heart of Thorns launches.

Your guild mission consumables will not be usable in Heart of Thorns as guild missions will no longer need consumables. If you run missions before launch, you will be able to run the missions after launch for guild rewards. For further notes on missions, read Colin’s post on a Handful of HoT Notes

3. Spend your remaining guild merits.
Merits will no longer be used by guilds and are being removed. Any merits held following the launch of Heart of Thorns cannot be spent and will be inaccessible.

4. Consider spending your influence.
There are about 15 consumable items that you can invest your guild influence in. You can hold 25 of each these consumables before your guild is capped on the number you can hold. If you have influence you cannot sink into consumables before launch, you will be able to exchange your influence for Aetherium, Favor and Resonance.

Influence may be exchanged as follows:
– Favor may be exchanged each week.
– Resonance may be exchanged as much as desired.
– Aetherium may be exchanged every 24 hours

5. Use your Art of War fortification buffs.
“Fortified” buffs will not carry into Heart of Thorns and cannot be used after launch. Activate and use these before launch to get the most out of them. Once Heart of Thorns launches, these will no longer be usable.

6. Queue what you can!
Anything in your queue will be auto completed. This counts for your guild’s currently building upgrades and your items further back in the queue.

7. Some upgrades will be grandfathered into the Guild Halls system.

When Heart of Thorns launches a few upgrades obtained in the previous system will carry over into the new system. These upgrades will not require you to own a guild hall and you will be able to benefit from them after launch.

The following upgrades will provide NPCs in the Guild Initiative Office.

Guild Armorer Contract will be renamed to “Guild Armorer 1” and will be auto unlocked for the Market.
Guild Weapons Contract will be renamed to “Guild Weaponsmith 1” and will be auto unlocked for the Market.
Guild Stash will be auto unlocked from the Notary
Guild Treasure Trove will be auto unlocked from the Market.
Deep Cave will be auto unlocked from the Market.

The following upgrades will unlock scribing recipes. You must have a guild hall to scribe the schematic and build the item. However, until you get the guild hall you will be able to purchase the items with favor from a Guild Requisitioner found in the Guild Initiative Office.

Guild Catapult will auto unlock the War Room upgrade “Scribing: Guild Catapult”.
Guild Siege Suit will auto unlock the War Room upgrade “Scribing: Guild Siege Golem”.

Have fun, everyone! \o/

Being environmentally minded the team has actually configured the raid servers to run solely on player tears. While this is normally quite a rare commodity, we felt strongly that the level of challenge that raids will provide should be sufficient to ensure the servers are adequately powered for a long time to come.

I have no doubt that many of our players are of a giving nature and we look forward to and welcome your contributions to our cause

1. Will Season 2 remain in the game after Heart of Thorns? Will I need to rush through the content if it is going away?

Season 2 is permanent content. Once you purchase it, you can play it as many times as you want at your own pace. There is no need to rush through it unless you want to. The events of Season 2 lead into the Heart of Thorns story, but it’s not required that you play Season 2 in order to understand what’s going on in HoT. (That stated, I recommend that you do play Season 2!)

2. Will I be able to do the Living Story events at Drytop and Silverwaste or will I be too late? I would like to be able to get to farm the fossil weapons and do Vinewrath and such.

You will still be able to play events and Living World Season 2 story content in Dry Top and the Silverwastes after HoT launches. If you need help in certain areas, you can use the LFG tool to find other players. (Or you can use local or map chat to team up.)

Also, thank you to everyone who helped answer the OP’s questions.

Playing Nice and Exploits

Hey everyone! Just letting you know, in case you weren’t aware, Heart of Thorns is launching soon! With any new expansion there are bound to be a couple of things that are inevitably going to happen when the floodgates open.

Playing Nice
Guild Wars 2 has the best community, it is known. Let’s keep it that way!

While everyone plays a little bit differently, keep in mind that you aren’t the only one out there. Keeping your chat and actions friendly allows everyone to have a great experience when playing together.

I just want to remind everyone that we will be monitoring for players that are causing issues for others. If you feel someone is stepping over the line, the report function in-game is the best tool at your disposal (right click the chat/player selection and select Report).

The last thing that we want to do is to have to put some people into timeout because they are making the game not enjoyable for others, but we will.

Exploits
Let’s talk about exploits. Exploits can be described as the abuse of a bug or unintended game design to gain an advantage over other players. For example, maybe that vendor is selling items for 1/100th of their sell value, or perhaps an escort event spawns an infinite number of instantly respawning loot piñatas when you cause the NPC to get stuck.

Exploits are bad news for everyone, and while we hope there won’t be any…ok I’ll just go with that.

We have a team ready to investigate issues and monitor activity, but our players our greatest asset when it comes to keeping Tyria a fair place.

If you happen to run across an exploit (or even if you think something may be an exploit) please don’t hesitate to send an email to exploits@arena.net. Feel free to send us your screenshots/videos/selfies/essays/poems if you believe you have found an exploit in the game!

Hi Cameron, thanks for the update! When you guys announced the HoT fractals update you stated the following:

“The one final step of taking your precursor and transforming it into the legendary backpack is called Ad Infinitum. However, we’ll come back to discuss how that component works—and how it ties into our next steps for the Fractals of the Mists within Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns—in the future. For now, though, I can tell you that just like existing legendary items, players will need to collect components from all over Tyria. To craft each stage of the precursor backpack, players will need to obtain a new salvage item from ascended equipment. And that leads us to our next topic…”

Are you guys going to follow up on this?

Colin posted a few notes on this here:

On Heart of Thorns release, you’ll be able to earn the precursor backpack. Some of the components for the legendary will become available with a future fractals release… when it’s ready™

Hello Players!

In preparation for the launch of the new fractals system alongside Heart of Thorns, we’ll be disabling the Fractals of the Mists instance for a short time period on Thursday Night.

From 11:00pm PDT on October 22nd until the moment Heart of Thorns content becomes available, Fractals of the Mists will be inaccessible. Anyone already inside the instance may be removed from the instance at that time.

Once Heart of Thorns is available, the new version of the fractals instance will become available to all players.

As a reminder, we will not be resetting your player scale, so you may play the new fractals starting from whichever scale you had previously achieved.

We’ll see you in game!

Actually I had this bug commented in guild chat 1 week ago, might be useful for you to reproduce it Lauren.

  • It appears that a mesmer used invisibility/blink to skip a certain part after the cage. That prevented the next stage to get triggered.

Sorry that I can’t give you more details. I think they filled a report /bug though, so you might just find it on your logs.

What character name did you submit it on? The DB with the /bugs is quite… large… and this will make it easier for me to find it.

Your mesmer probably blinked past a tripwire, or that sounds like the likely scenario.

I’d slightly care about the existence of an API query for “has X character on Y account done dungeon Z path # today”, but what I’d really like is to query against the bitmask for “what dungeon paths for dungeon Z have I done, ever”?

I have something working locally, but it doesn’t currently provide an intuitive mapping. I’m trying to expose the progress bits for all achievements, but we only recently added functionality to add string descriptions of each progress bit. I’m not sure offhand where in the release pipeline the supporting API code for that stuff is, but that feature will be available at some point.

The returned items are completely unordered due to the asynchronous behaviour of the backend (i believe Lawton or Pat explained that somewhere over here).

That’s pretty much it. I’m going to put an item on the backlog to return them sorted when a specific set of ids is requested — there’s no reason not to.

Upcoming Global Change to Player Minions

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: Roy Cronacher

@Roy Cronacher, would it be possible to use this same type of system except a maybe 25% damage reduction on pets in WvW? Pets die instantly in WvW battles and it would help immensely to make some class features available in WvW… Of course percentages can always be tweaked until a balance is found.

This is not currently possible. For this change we made creatures, at the base AI level, look at what they are targeting and what they hit to adjust damage accordingly, it has nothing to do with player damage interactions. Doing this for WvW. adjusting outgoing player damage to minions, is not tech we are currently working on and likely would cause some perf issues as well. Players attack much much more often then creatures. So doing checks on each one of the damage targets from a player can become expensive very quickly. Though, that’s not to say that we won’t ever consider investigating it, but for now this change is specifically for creatures attacking player minions and we’ll be balancing it and seeing how it goes.

Couldn’t this be accomplished with a zone wide buff on minions in WvW areas with a percentage of all incoming damage reduced or greatly increase their mitigation in some way and just have the dmg adjusted as it lands? This seems like it may be a good low hanging fruit option. Because right now any and all minions/pets and even those coming with the elite specializations will be useless absolutely utterly useless in any large scale fights.

Things are rarely that simple. While you may be looking at that from a larger scale fight perspective and it would probably help there, it would create other problems such as making minions too strong and frustrating in smaller to mid scale combat with just a flat reduction always on them.

Hey Roy, the question has been floating around about what’s going to happen with creatures that split damage, such as phantasmal defender and bulwark gyro. We haven’t heard anything yet, could you explain to us what happens when those are in play?

The damage transferred works like it normally does, the minion takes a percentage of damage the player would have taken. The change is only from creature attacks against player minions, nothing else is different. I mean, sure, the defender will live longer because it dies to less AOE so it can soak more damage, if that’s what you mean.

Hi Roy,

Three questions:
1) If a Ranger pet attacks another ranger pet. With them being both minions, do they get the 95% damage reduction? Or are they counted as part of the player and get the full damage?
2) Will runes such as, Rune of the Ogre that summons a rock dog be consider a minion?
3) Elemental glphys weren’t mentioned as minions in your responses. Are glyph summons consider minions?

1) Nothing different happens, this is for creatures attacks against player minions as mentioned in the original post.
2) Yes.
3) Yes.

Literally anything you summon/control as a player is a player minion. Turrets, spirit weapons, ranger spirits, ranger pets, gyros, phantasms/clones, necro minions, etc.

So does this now mean I have a 5% chance of killing a players Mini pet? :P I would like to kill that ho ho tron!

Mini pets can’t be attacked.

Doesn’t matter what the rate is when you take into account you need every single point in the old maps as well. That x9 is too much.

Except you don’t! There are enough hero challenges in the jungle you don’t need to do any in the core tyrian world – those simply speed you up on day one if you already got them.

Unless I am mistaken just to unlock half of the training line, we need 212 hero points?

It’s 400 points total to unlock everything in an elite spec training line – I just can’t remember off hand how many points folks have currently if they have done all the existing ones, but it’s right around 200. The rest you’ll need to earn in jungle to unlock the deeper skills/traits/etc. in the training line.

You only need 60 hero points to begin using your elite spec, the points you spend after that continue to unlock more skills, traits, skins, etc.

Again, hero challenges are worth 10 points each in the jungle. So no you don’t need to go do 200-400 jungle challenges.

Unlocking your elite spec is a training line in your training panel that costs hero points. You do need to have trained all the existing training lines before you’re allowed to put hero points into your elite spec.

If you’ve got all the hero points in the existing game you’ll have enough to train about half the elite specialization training line on launch day. The rest you’ll need to earn in the jungle or via the new system Tyler outlined yesterday from WvW. The number of points to fully train your elite spec is higher than other training lines – but hero challenges in the jungle are worth 10 points each, so it’s not actually as big as it appears.

Remember, you’ve seen that many designers are actively reviewing professions. So don’t give up hope, and be sure to keep in mind that the devs have to look at the big picture as well as the small. There is a lot of careful and critical review taking place, and I have a feeling there will be other changes in the future. (And no, I don’t know what they are, but I’m glad that the professions are getting so much attention these days, and this change seems a really great step in the right direction!)

We are angry, bitter and venting many years of frustration Gaile, don’t go waving the happy wand around these parts! Get off our lawn!

Man, and rangers, as a rule, are usually so nice! Well, all I can say is "HUMPH!!*

Flipped values for PvP Bye/Desertions?

I’ve raised the issue with the guys who maintain the server which keeps track of match history and aggregates. Going to try to get a local repro of the desertion/bye issue; if there is an issue it’s probably going to be pretty deep in the stack.

As for hotjoins, it’s probably by design. The aggregate stats come from the server responsible for matchmaking, and I’m guessing that hotjoins no longer affect player MMR (and thus aren’t included in the aggregate data). Definitely an annoyance from a data perspective, but if that assumption is correct it’ll take some extra work to pipe that data through a side channel.

Thanks for the reports <3

Does this reduction include cleaving attacks? or are those considered “targeted” attacks?

If the cleave attack targets the minion then no reduction, if the minion is not the target of the cleave attack then yes it does get reduced.

This was the systemic change to help with pet survivability that I’d alluded to earlier.

I’ll be listening for feedback on the changes to see how the 95% damage reduction feels and whether we need to tweak the numbers some more.

Hey guys – some additional information based on your questions:

  • As noted by some replies, having some knowledge of season 1-2 of Living World will be really helpful to your understanding of expansion story because it is a direct continuation of those storylines. Having said that, we do try (to varying degrees) to establish characters for those who’ve not played in a while. If you’ve not played any story in GW2, you probably will feel pretty lost, but there’s some good info and story synopses out there in case you need to catch up.
  • There’s no need to login in any sort of time window to “unlock” the expansion story. If you’ve purchased “Heart of Thorns”, it’s already unlocked, and you can play the story whenever you see fit. There are some mastery-gates on certain chapters (certain skills are required for navigation in the story chapters, because of their locations in the maps), but those will be messaged both on the in-game UI and in the story journal.
  • Grouping after the prologue is completed – Yes, you should be able to group up and play the “Torn from the Sky” chapter with any other players who have completed the prologue and all party members should earn progress for the chapter.
  • Silverwastes tutorial – This was needed for a number of reasons: 1. because the storyline for the base Silverwastes map is so distinctively set in a time period (Pact forces are preparing for the assault on Mordremoth, however in “Heart of Thorns” this assault has already been launched, and failed). 2. because it allows us to not have a flood of players in one of our popular maps who are not working toward the meta for that map and consequently skewing the meta progression in undesirable ways, and 3. for some sound technical reasons. :-)
  • Canach and the others – Yeah, the beta version of this chapter didn’t include the main NPC’s you’re used to seeing in story content, but they’ll be there in the Live version you’ll experience on Friday. You’ll get to see them briefly and get an explanation for their presence prior to seeing them in “Torn from the Sky”.

When you say that they are remaining the same for PvP, does that mean WvW too? Please say yes.

This is only for creature attacks against player minions. Player attacks against minions keeps the same functionality as it has right now. This is for everywhere.
