I am sorry for the inconvenience. One reason this might be happening is that someone acquired the password and it has recently be published on a “known, compromised password list.” (And yes, such things do exist!)

If you know that changing the password is recommended, and you know we’re not asking that for frivolous reasons, then I’m sure you’ll feel better about choosing a new password, since your security can only be enhanced with that change.

There is not issue with the billing team. The number of fraudulent purchases using stolen credit cards is very high. We are proactively closing those accounts and issuing refunds. I am confident that if the OP purchased from us, he or she will receive a refund for the purchase price.

Keep in mind that while we issue a refund and close the account at the same time, the refund can be caught in the CC system, where the bank does not process it for, sometimes, a matter of days. But be assured that if someone made a purchase, we will close and refund, to avoid dealing with the anticipated fraud involved in that particular purchase.

It’s working fine for me, once you leave the start location there’s about a 3 second pause, then a dialogue cutscene kicks off and the next objective appears. It’s possible to rush forward and try to talk to Tonn before the cutscene kicks off, but it will kick in automatically after 3s so I don’t see how you’d be able to run around the map without it continuing.

If you have “Fast cast ground targeting” turned on in your options, it will attempt to target the mouse cursor’s position, which might not be in a valid spot. This might also be a tebuchet that requires you to hold down the fire button to power up the range of the shot, if you simply tap it, it might be trying to fire the shot too closely.

you need to move to his server or he needs to move to your server whenever possible. Now, we understand that some servers are FULL most of the times but even though, you can still try to join in. You could also choose to move together to a server that it is not so populated. Remember that server transfers are only allowed once per week.

tl;dr: We are working on a fix (a collection of fixes, really) for culling and character loading issues. The fixes require significant changes to a number of game systems and thus require time to implement. We’re not yet ready to discuss a release date for the current set of fixes, but we’re working hard to improve the experience as quickly as we can.

Now for the long version:

We currently use server-side report culling to limit the number of characters that any given game client is aware of. By limiting the number of characters that we report to any given client we also limit the bandwidth used (by the server and the client) and avoid situations where the client is overwhelmed by the number of characters that need to be processed and rendered. While this system has some obvious advantages, and it works well in PvE, the large battles that are the signature of WvW tend to highlight the deficiencies of this approach.

There are also some client-side issues which have contributed to the perception of how our culling system works. Once a character is reported to a given client there’s a non-zero amount of time required to load and initially display the assets associated with that character. Extra load time varies depending on how beefy the client machine is (those with more memory, faster CPUs, more CPU cores, and faster drives experience shorter load times). One of our engine programmers recently completed an optimization pass on the character loading process and so we should be seeing improvements to that part of the issue very soon. Even so, the bulk of the issue remains with the server-side culling as it doesn’t matter how fast your client can load and draw a character if it hasn’t even been told that character should exist yet.

As you may have heard we already have a fix for the server-side culling implemented for sPvP. Because sPvP has dramatically less players we were able deploy our fix immediately without worrying about downstream side effects. WvW, however, operates at a much larger scale than sPvP and so we have a number of additional hurdles to clear before we can turn on the server-side fix. In order to address the culling issue we need to ensure that clients, including min-spec clients, are able to handle rendering and processing many more characters. We also need to ensure that the bandwidth needed by any given client remains reasonable and falls within our min-spec for connectivity. The WvW team is working to address both the bandwidth and the client performance issues even now. The changes that we’re making are complex and have a large impact on the way the game engine works. Because of the level of complexity involved, and the core systems that are impacted, these fixes take time to implement correctly. As such, I can’t give you a date when we’ll be done.

At the end of the day our goal is to dramatically improve the experience of large battles in WvW and provide a substantial increase to the number of players that can be seen by any given client.

People using MF gear can be a hindrance to a party if the player isn’t very skilled. PUGing always come with dangers – but I find the most dangerous thing is a glass cannon stat allocation combined with berserker gear. Great for damage, but if a dungeon Vet sneezes on you, you’re gonna have a bad time.

Personally, I run with a mixed stat set for dungeons. I have about 15% MF without consumables, and spread the rest through a mix of toughness, power, and crit chance. I pretty much remove my +crit% in favor for MF%. I play a very mobile ranger as well, and know the mechanics of combat pretty well, so more often than not I am carrying a team of PUGs, or even my friends.

The truth of the matter is that even glass cannon builds can be possible in the hands of a highly skilled players who know exactly what to do. It all boils down to the player skill and their knowledge of the challenge at hand.

My personal approach to stats and skills are based around utility and an even spread. Min-maxing has it’s potential, but I’ve come to the conclusion that I am no help to my team lying dead on the ground, and team-play is more important than personal output, so as long as I can be up helping my team, I am valuable.

one of the main reasons we put the tokens in the Wondrous bag, is because of people not always being able to reach the end of the path. We want partial rewards for players, but it has to be at an amount that won’t be abused by just killing the first boss over and over. We hope that 3 will be enough, and if we find it isn’t, we’ll balance it further.
I’ll look into our champion mobs not dropping lot. They certainly should.

We know that this is a topic that’s going to be heavily discussed, and we definitely want as much of your feedback as possible, both positive and negative (so long as it remains constructive and within the guidelines of the rules of conduct). However I would just like to point out that this:

“…fact that it’s the highest concurrence time…”

is contradictory to this:

“why not choose a time where there’s a higher chance for people to choose to attend?”

The reason we chose the times that we did, when concurrency is at its peak, is precisely because it offers us the highest chance for the largest number of people to attend. By definition though, because concurrency rises and falls, that means it’s impossible for us to choose a time that offers us a chance for everyone to attend.

Offering events like this at multiple times for different time zones is certainly worth considering, but given our team’s goals and the timeline we had to operate in (we fielded our team immediately after shipping the Live game), it just wasn’t feasible for us to consider such an option for this particular event.

Having said that, this decision is something that we realized would not make everyone happy. Keep in mind that there is a tremendous lineup of content to choose from during the weekend and after, with both the island and the Fractals dungeon remaining active, and we will continue to listen to both criticisms and compliments about these special events in order to continually improve your playing experience.

Hey all, I am a gameplay programmer here at ArenaNet; I just wanted to take a moment to address some stuff about FOV. A while back, reddit user Boojum started this thread (http://redd.it/118t3a) about FOV. He (she?) did some cool math to reverse engineer information about how our FOV is set up. Seriously, check it out, it is really cool!

What Boojum concluded is that at 16:10 apect ratio, our horizontal FOV came out to be about 65deg. We here at ArenaNet have stated that our FOV is fixed at 75degs. Pretty naturally, the conclusion was that our math must be bugged. So what gives? What is going on with all this FOV junk anyways?

This is my attempt to summarize what we have found and what we did about it. I am a programmer and so this might get more technical than most are comfortable with, but I hope that in the end it shows how everything works and why we made changes.

The first thing you should take away is that there is actually multiple ways to define FOV- Horizontal, Vertical, Diagonal. The each control how much we see of the game world, just in different directions of the screen. The rest of what we see is controlled mainly by Aspect Ratio, the ratio of the view width to the view height.

How does this work? Let’s say we have a fixed horizontal FOV to control the view, the vertical FOV would change based on the aspect ratio of the screen. In this situation, as I make the view height greater and greater, the vertical FOV would grow to see more and more. Now the interesting thing is if I was to stretch the view to be wider and wider, my effective vertical FOV becomes smaller, but the effective horizontal angle stays the same no matter what the aspect is. This is an important point- depending on which version we are using, the effective angle of the others change as the aspect ratio changes.

This is exactly what we found out happened with Boojum. It turns out that Guild Wars 2 uses diagonal FOV for our calculations, not horizontal and not vertical. Boojum didn’t know which version we used, so he had to make the assumption that we used horizontal. This is totally fair, we never mentioned which version we used. In the end, he calculated the effective horizontal FOV and found it to be 65degs and made the assertion that our math must be funny.

It turns out that when you work out all the math, at 16:10 aspect ratio, using diagonal FOV of 75deg, the effective horizontal FOV is about 65degs- exactly what Boojum found! All the math works out! In fact, I would bet that if Boojum reran his program, but this time set to figure out diagonal FOV, he would find it to be exactly 75degs.

So what implications does using a diagonal FOV have? As the aspect ratio grows the effective horizontal FOV grows and the effect vertical FOV shrinks! Effective horizontal FOV actually grows and gets closer and closer to 75degs as the aspect ratio goes towards infinity. At the same time, the effective vertical FOV will get closer and closer to zero.

I am of the belief that everyone, players and devs alike, actually think in terms of a fixed vertical FOV. Meaning that as the aspect ratio grows, what you see vertically does not change at all, but you get to see more and more horizontally. This is effectively what players have described wanting for so long, they want a way to see more horizontally because they have wide screen monitors.

For that reason, we decided to change our calculations from a diagonal FOV to a vertical FOV. This is more in-line with what everyone thinks, those with 16:10 aspect ratio will get approximately 10degs more FOV for free. If you have a wider or more extreme FOV (triple monitor folks, I am looking at you), you will get to see even more, for free!

Making this change isn’t as simple as flipping a switch, there is a lot of implications with increasing the amount of stuff you can see; the biggest concern is performance. Because you can now see more stuff on screen, that means that more stuff is being drawn to the screen and more things are animating. On lower end machines this can have a noticeable impact which we felt was unfair and unacceptable. Not long ago, we started a trial of the vertical FOV to find out what players think and if it was worth going through with the change. The trial left us with a good impression and enough information that we decided to make it a permanent change. We still had the problem to face of performance, some lower end machine will still not be able to handle seeing more stuff, and we believe while we continue to optimize the game we can “buy back” this loss.

Since players will be affected by this immediately, we offer a different command-line option to revert to using the old diagonal FOV calculation. By adding “-useOldFOV” to your game shortcut, the game will act the same as it did before and remove any additional performance hits that we might have introduced.

So don’t play 8v8? I know I won’t be. I don’t understand your point in calling what I said trolling. The “baddies” get to keep their 8v8, and people like me get 5v5. It’s win/win.

That’s what we were thinking. Lets people have the best of both worlds. Glad you like the 5v5’s!

We can watch the servers to see which players use more. If 5on5 is seeing more play, we can change the order and put them at the top of the lists. We’ll just keep an eye on it and see what the players gravitate towards.
