Here’s my perspective on the topic. If Chronobunker were to be nerfed with the upcoming changes, Mesmers/Chrono would simply revert to Shatter power build. Mesmers have been primarily using shatter builds for a very long time, so it’s hardly a foreign concept to players. Infact Shatter Chrono was very strong right after HoT released, until everyone started playing passive defense wars.

On the other hand, I don’t want Anet to completely remove a build’s viability. It’s a good thing that Mesmers/Chrono have build alternatives than the burst shatter builds. One that’s capable of contesting points in PvP without fear of losing caps (eg. unlike Condi PU). In my opinion, a good balance is when a class is viable of running 3 types of build within a game mode, Power, Condi and Support. However if a class is able to have all 3 within 1 build, that’s too strong, like Heralds and Tempests.

As for the OP’s discussion on Mesmers skills being useless, I would like to disagree on many of his points. Too many to list so I’ll just keep it short. Firstly Cry of Frustration is mainly for condi builds. It’s also can be used as a boon stripping skill when traited. Mantras were also a thing but short lived. Additionally it is a common across all professions that they’ll have some skills unsuitable for PvP. Guardian’s Spirit weapons, Elementalist’s Conjures, Thief’s traps are just some examples of skill types that’s not used in PvP.

Why this game will never have Legendary armor

The problem is the different armor weights have different points where the pieces join. For example tops on heavy armor are much shorter – typically stopping just below the ribs on a human, whereas light armor is on the hips.

That issue already exists within a single armour type. I know some Light armour tops (ones that cover the belly) doesn’t meet properly with bottom.

I can see heavy and light being able to mix well. However a lot of medium armours is trenchcoat-like and will cover/clip with the leggings of light/heavy when combined.

mobas only work as you have hardly any rotations, and splits are obvious.

I have a feeling you don’t play enough moba to comment on that. The only obvious splits in moba is that there will be least 1 hero/champion across 2/3 lanes. The splits could be 1/1/1, 2/1/2, 3/1/1, 2/2/1 etc. Rotations in moba are also easier than GW2, just a teleport scroll and you’re on the other side of the map.

Why?

What if he is a actual friend who just doesnt PvP that much? I que with my guild members and there in amber/emerald/sapphire so does that make me a cheater?

Maybe he didnt want to wait for a hour long que, should he not do this because hes being punished for being better at the game then other people?

This forum is really salty over everything and even when a player loses your looking for a reason to say something negative.

You’re rather salty over it than you should be. As I mentioned in previous reply, he certainly got to legendary division in some form.

Does he deserve hour long queue? No.
Is he a cheater? No.
Was coincidence his friend is amber? Maybe.
Was his friend using a secondary account? Maybe.
Could he queued with a someone with higher division? Yes.

Yeah, I mean everyones quick to blame them for exploiting, but I think they’re merely trying to salvage a flawed, unfinished, “beta” system for leagues than purposely exploiting. They typically get hour+ long queuest at that division if they try to go solo, so I doubt they’re picking up amber kids just to get easier matches, since they’re doing it just to get matches at all.

I mean I’m sure most of you would do it too if you cared enough about stupid stuff like division and status enough to want to do that, so yeah, I don’t blame at all for wanting to be legendary, when legendary doesn’t mean a kitten thing.

It proves 2 things actually.
1) The system is indeed broken to allow queueing between 2 outliners of a spectrum. It is Anet’s fault in their implementation of the system. I know in DotA2, you cannot queue with friends if the mmr difference is too much within the group. The same should have been implemented here, if one’s division variance is too big.

2) However it doesn’t justify player’s actions to manipulate the flaws in the system. He certainly got to Legendary somehow in the first place. This meant he was able to find matches through Ruby, Diamond and Legendary. I don’t blame him if he wants to find a pvp match within a reasonable time frame. Then again, he could have queued with Emerald, Sapphire, Ruby, queuing with an Amber raised a lot of eyebrows.

Why do people say score doesn't matter?

in PvP

Posted by: Akikaze.1307

Akikaze.1307

In most scenarios, personal score doesn’t matter. However there will be cases where a match outcome can be judged from a player’s individual score. I’m sure we’ve all encountered matches where there’s that one person kept going to a mid point where there’s 2-3 enemies, only to get slaughtered, possibly ending the match on 0.

Even if you play as bunker, and held a point for the entire game, good teammates certainly should have rotated and helped score a kill. Thus having a low score is perfectly reasonable, having a 0 score can be questionable.

My previous suggestion:
You become immune to the following conditions depending on your current attunement:
Fire: Chill, burning
Air: Weakness, torment
Earth: Cripple, bleed
Water: poison, confusion

After reading over numerous threads about this trait, that is the best suggestion I’ve seen thus far. Though I would add a few more conditions to that list.

Fire: Chill, Burning
Air: Weakness, Blind, Slow
Earth: Cripple, Bleed, Vulnerability
Water: Poison, Confusion, Torment

Fear and Immobilized to remain opened so there’s still counterplay. Also it should be immune to those conditions for new stacks applied. Existing stacks should still tick to enforce active condi-cleansing.

Exactly my point. You can’t expect to have a rational discussion when you insist on belittling other people and making their points out to be not worthy of consideration. If people are upset, they have a reason to be upset, and you might not agree with their reasons, but you have to at least understand and accept that they are that person’s reasons if you want to have any chance at resolving the situation. Comments like “Forced to PvP? There is no forcing of players to PvP. It is a simple want or don’t want. If one doesn’t have interest in pvping, then simply don’t expect to get the rewards from PvPing. You cannot expect to do nothing and win a PvP match at the same time.” just show you to have a poor understanding of those players’ mindset, they do not reflect poorly on those players at all.

Nope, try again.

Infact the way that Anet designed their matchmaking system, it is intended you get 50% win/lose ratio. Therefore most people should face similar amounts of wins to loses.

Nope. I’m at 3-8 right now, and most of this wins came recently. Some people are reporting far worse scores. Chalk that up to me being terrible if it makes you feel better, but I think I tend to do pretty well, often 1v2ing points and getting a decent amounts of kills, and the scores in the losing matches averaged 100+ point spreads, so I doubt that could be entirely my fault.

I’d rather lose 500-350 than 500-50. It is often from the latter, where attempts were not evident from fellow teammates (or themselves), that’s when people get annoyed.

A 500-50 score doeesn’t necessarily mean that your team didn’t even try, it just means that they weren’t very successful. It could represent them trying their best, but being woefully ill-equipped for the match, or the other team really being on their stuff. I had one match today where the other team had at least a couple members who clearly outmatched mine (myself included) and would just obliterate opposing players in seconds before moving on. It was like downscaled level 80s fighting in Queensdale. This is what happens when the matchmaking system is a joke.

The problem is, usually PvP only includes people that WANT to be there, people who enjoy competitive play, and know that when they lose, it’s ok, they just lost a match due to better opponents and if they minded that they wouldn’t be PvPing.

Now though, there are a LOT of players who have absolutely ZERO interest in PvPing, perhaps even actively HATE PvPing, but are forced to do it anyways to complete the backpack, so all they want is for the match to be over with ASAP with their side winning, and anything else is just getting in the way of that.

How do you expect them to react to losing?

Take away Celestial stat advantage

in PvP

Celestial is good for classes that can use ALL of the stats it offers better than an alternative. Thief, Warrior, Revenant, Guardian and Mesmer (so far as I know) do not use the Celestial amulet, because they get better stat usage out of other amulets. Ele, Engi, Necro and Ranger can use it because they have condi and power damage that can be kept reasonably high while still keeping a high survival rating.

Considering you didn’t answer the request for 3 times and were AFK, why did you bother seeking for a PvP match in the first place? That’s potentially 27 other people who had to wait for you. Not nice.

RO’s WoE (guild vs guild) maps, some skill effects would use a simplified effect version due to the large number of simutaneous animations. The simplified animation could still easily be identified to a particular skill as it kept the same themes. While in PvE maps, the original, full animations is kept (simplified ver in PvE could still be used with command option).

That’s your problem. That 68% got knocked to around 50% to ‘balance’ things. That’s why this matchmaking is ridiculous! You get punished for success!

He’s not being punished, he’s playing people his own skill level instead of stomping newbies. If you’re good enough, you’ll keep defying MMR’s attempts to find you better opponents until you’re at the top of the pack.

Think about how good can he be though. If we refer to the win rate he posted to be accurate. A 68% decrease to 46% is 22% difference, within an estimate frame of 20 rounds. Assume he had 100 matches in total, including the recent ones, then losing majority of the last 20 would match up to his decrease in winrate. In comparison if he had played 1000 matches in total, the difference in winrate swing wouldn’t be as significantly big number.

If your win rate sway by 20% within 20matches, then ideally you haven’t been playing many matches overall. Thus your ‘mmr’ is vulnerable to big back/forth swings. Also currently there is a huge skill variance among PvP matches with Ranked disabled and PvE players doing dailies.

If you want to afk or rank farm, join the numerous pvp daily rooms, you can afk and gain track rewards to your satisfication. There is no reason to queue for a unranked/ranked match if you do not attempt to play PvP.

Additionally a S/D Thief can still work in some circumstances. Though the skill level needed is VERY demanding to pull it off. Afk’ing in matches isn’t going to improve getting better at it. Unfortunately the truth is Daredevil will make playing sword/dagger much smoother but you have no interest in HoT, which is understandable.

Outcry for Change

1) Disagree. The new maps is not hard, it’s simply tedious (long chain events) and obstructive (gated by masteries). I solo open world PvE content 95% of the time and get along fine. Hardly even ask for help unless it’s dps/timed like the legendary/champions.

2) Agreed. There are a few HP which are stupidly designed. Rather than making them ‘challenging’, the mobs simply 2-hit KO you irrelevant of gear. My necro can get 3 shot from the Coztic Bladedancer champion with soldier gear (thankfully have auto DS trait). I cannot imagine running around on a thief, often see thief players get instant downed.

3) Agreed. Having pets obtained through events may sound like a cool idea but it comes with a drawback. Pets are essentially part of ranger’s class mechanic and puts an additional wall on the profession. I believe the Tiger haven’t even been discovered yet (if it’s in the current maps at all).

5) Neutral. SW is definitely more rewarding in both chest farms and Vinewrath. Farming in the HoT maps rewarded me bags full of greens/blues and hardly any rares, thus it’s unsatisfying when you realised you can get better rewards elsewhere. However beating the new bosses on the new map is still fun, loving the Wyvern Patriarch fight.

7) Neutral. That’s actually a funny point as 6/9 elite specialisations are offensive based, 2/9 are party support via buffs and only 1 is healing. Considering the damage some mobs do, players might go down before you’ll even get the druid heals off.

MMR is not working

in PvP

Posted by: Akikaze.1307

Akikaze.1307

Despite the system trying to create a 50% winrate, it does have its flaws. There is evidently extremes where some good players exceed results of 60% winrate. Equally the flipside of poor performing players could obtain sub 40% winrate.

Ithilwen, unfortunately it appears you’re on the lower half of the spectrum. From your replies, you seem to be reliant on the profession to carry you than player skill itself. Like Locuz mentioned, aside from mmr, it could be you’re not pulling enough weight to win matches.

Your newer alt account might have a higher/lower winrate because it’s MMR is not fully calibrated yet. If MMR is anything like other games, you could have big swings of wins or loses as the system attempts to settle your range. (Edit: There’s also other variables like playing multiple professions compared to one profession on the account.)

Elite Specializations & Hero Point Feedback [Merged]

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Akikaze.1307

Take into mind that you’ll be unlocking traits and skills to get the whole experience. Personally I think it should be over 100 just for the traits.

I really feel it’s a waste if I don’t use 100% of my hero points for this.

It is silly asking the unlock to cost more than 100 hero points.
Currently unlocking 1 specialisation takes 60 points and 1 full set of skills takes around 20-25 points. That’s 85 in total, excluding the runes/sigils and profession skins.

If the new hero system really requires 170-250 points to unlock every character specialization and level progression in WvW or PvP doesn’t grant hero points then can be said that the system is unfair, and that Arenanet is forcing bottlenecks making mandatory some kind of gameplay and game modes to being able to progress.

Agreed. If we deduct the skills/traits costing 85, I cannot imagine how 2 skins and upgrade components is going to be worth the other 85 points.

I can see why you’re confused because of the +10 and +5 appearing. You’re seeing 15 points because player kills also grant you +10 personal score.

Yeah I just found out.

Its in the center.

It shows amulets, sigils etc. but no gear like hatpiece, shoulders etc.
Where to obtain the gear?

Whilst in the Heart of the Mist (HotM), you don’t need any specific gears equipped for stats, they are obtained from amulets/runes/sigils. However you do need a chest, pants and boots piece equipped to get the armour values. Those specific pieces can be any level or grade, therefore even the starter gear would work.

Similarly for weapons, it can be any grade/level and should give the full attack values. You can purchase the NPC ones if you choose to use other weapon sets.

The Hitpoint System is Outdated.

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Akikaze.1307

Akikaze.1307

I would have to disagree that “hitpoints” is the problem. The issue is more to do with the mechanics of the game and system. Here are a few things that’ll need to be overhauled if GW2 were to properly introduce ‘healers’.

  • Targeting: Currently there is no allied targeting or single target cast heals. Heals (and buffs) in general are just AoE centric lowering its focal point.
  • Down state: Healers is utilized to prevent a player dying at all cost. However even if players lose all their HP in GW2, they go into a downed state before dying. This effectively removes the importance of a dedicated healer if everyone can just revive each other.
  • Out of combat reset: The out of combat free HP reset also denies the need for a HP recovery or battle down time.
  • Low cooldown heals: Many of the self heals for professions still heal for a decent amount for their low cooldowns. Essentially this makes every player their own healer in sustaining fights.

Edit:
The spending of HP as a cost only works if HP recovery isn’t freely available. Else it wouldn’t be considered a trade off and the class with freely available regeneration would gain undesired advantages (ie ele/war).

There are also several “%threshold HP” bonuses for some professions. Elementalist, Engineers and Rangers are some examples that have traits which grant bonus damage for being above 90% hp. Similarly, the Scholar runes provide damage bonus for above HP threshold.

Condition damage reduced by: …..

Soldiers amulet make power builds trade off critical damage for its survival capabilities. However if Dire amulet exists, condi builds wouldn’t need to sacrifice any efficiency to produce the same amount of damage while maintaining high survival capabilities.

Gear doesn't matter for sPvP right?

in PvP

Posted by: Akikaze.1307

Akikaze.1307

In sPvP, gears/acessories does not matter. HOWEVER you must have a chest + pants + boots piece equipped to get the full armour values. Everything else is selected from the PvP customization menu with amulet/runes/sigils.

In addressing to damage values, different damage source have different counters. Burning needs to be cleansed via condition removal skills else it will accumulate a lot of damage overtime. To avoid burst physical damage, you’ll need to get used to skill animations and dodge accordingly. (Unfortunately it’s hard to predict an incoming backstab from stealth and it has been a repeated discussion by many players in the PvP forums.) Dodging and positioning is the key to avoid numerous sources of damage in this game.

As for Thief, the class itself is the definition of a glass cannon. It hits hard but it’s extremely vulnerable to getting hit. Thief is generally not a good class to transgress into for new PvP experience because you’ll need to be confident in knowing how to play the class to do well.

Mesmer this, Elementalist that. It feels like we ain’t even pvping in the same game. I see as much Necromancers as the previous 2 mentioned.

HoT, Australia and hard copies.

I somewhat doubt that a physical copy of HoT would only be $50AUD. It’s more likely to still cost you around 70AUD, especially from EB who pretty much always overcharge. You also don’t need to buy the expansion using gems, you can just do a straight purchase from the GW2 website.

As for LoL not making you pay conversion, I’d imagine it’s because they actually have an Oceanic server and most probably operate their business quite differently to Arenanet who are specifically located in the US. Just looking at Wikipedia, Riot have offices in St. Louis, Dublin, Berlin, Seoul, São Paulo, Istanbul, Moscow, Sydney, and Taipei. So that is almost certainly why.

That doesn’t explain why the Gem Card costs $15 AUD for 1200 gems, as opposed to ~$20 if using USD/AUD conversion. They used to be sold in stores such as EB, JB HiFi and Game Traders. I got a few from Game Traders back in March-May and (somehow) recently discontinued from July.

Not re-releasing items only decreases the games longevity. You are putting an expiration date on games that are not new player friendly. Why would players want to come into a game only to find they have missed 5, 10, 15 years worth of stuff they will never be able to have? They would be right to think they already missed the boat and should either play a game that does not do that or a game that just started so they have a chance to enjoy all of the content everyone else enjoys as well. The benefits do not outweigh the harm done to the game long term of having items in the game that new players will never be able to obtain. I would rather have new players joining keeping the game fresh instead of having the game die. People should not forget that players do not HAVE to play your game, you want to give them reasons to CHOOSE your game over others, otherwise your game dies while they are playing games that gave them more reasons to play them.

^That pretty much sums up the reason why some of my friends refused to get the game even though it was on sale for $10.

While seasonal items should be exclusive to holidays, the amount of other “exclusive” timed cosmetics is rather annoying. For some skins, it’s not like those players unlocked skins through achievements, they were simply ‘there’ on a particular day (wings, bunny ears, glasses etc).

Afterall GW2 is buy to play and should be attractive to new players. When they see veteran players with sparkling skins, they would want to earn their way towards them. However when they find out that some skins are locked through discontinued content (Living season 1, old PvP armour skins), people will guaranteed be disappointed.

Instead of revoking inactive account character names, easier solution would be actually to modify the character creation screen. Enable a “confirmation” check that the character name is not in use (on the last creation page). That way, players can play around and test ideas without full commitment and end up creating “A Kitten” as their character name.

Um, you can just try to whisper the name before creating the character. If you get an error message, the name is available.

A quality of life UI change would be better. There are some older mmorpg that have this option, always curious why GW2 don’t have it. Additionally, new players wouldn’t know you can utilize this trick. In other games, whispering offline players would also say “error”. Most new players won’t even be aware you could use accent letters until they’re ingame.

why wasn't Taunt fixed?

Also a side note (in PvE), Taunt can also activate through Boss monster’s defiance stacks. You know the debuff isn’t working properly when it can even bypass 80 stacks of defiance.

Why do people assume Thiefs are getting a rifle? A rifle is a stand still and shoot weapon, taking aim for a while and deal tons of damage with a single hit (Warrior Burst skill for example).

Well there’s only 2 examples of Rifle in the game atm. The one you’re describing is relative to Warriors, stand and shoot. However look at Engineer’s rifle skills, they’re more “mobile” orientated enabling the Engi across different ranges.

Based on the current needs for thiefs, staffs wouldn’t fit or help in any case.

Melee staff could be the cleave/AoE sustained DPS for thief.
Currently thief has ok sustained DPS and high single target burst and quite bad AoE damage.

Sword/Pistol. Sword auto attack cleaves.

Warrior greatsword and main-hand axe. Both auto attacks also cleave. What’s your point?

If you read what I was replying to, maybe you would get the point.
Belzebu was suggesting that staff fills the role of “melee cleave” for thief as a reply to Tyr. I added in the point that there’s already a weapon that provides the same cleave/sustained DPS option on thief.

Im glad I got my illusionist title before the PvP change when you actually had to do ranked in order to achieve that. Mesmer was different in some ways then, and Ele was nowhere to be seen in PvP they were literally the worst class at that time along with ranger while Thief dominated with perma stealth.
I just hope they don’t nerf mesmer to unplayable (which I don’t think will happen) as Ele was at some point in the beginning in all game modes.
All mesmer are shatter now – which is what I started on when I was in PvP diapers, it was a good starter build but became blah after some time; I don’t PvP on my mesmer anymore since I’d basically be forced to be a shatter variant build if I wanted to be effective. I hate that – no real build diversity.

The pvp profession titles could be earned from both unranked and ranked games. It’s not restricted to ranked only. Only practice/custom arenas don’t count towards the achievement.

Prepatch, majority of mesmers ran shatter anyways. In addition, shatter 44006 was the core viable build for mesmers due to IP and DE being key traits. The current build diversity increased with the patch. There’s mantra interrupt, power shatter, condi shatter and PU variants.

Personally I’d love Thief to be getting Rifles. Only 2 professions can utilize rifles and unfortunately it’s really lackluster on Warriors. If they ain’t going to be getting rifles, it’ll be one of the least equipable weapon in the game (along with shortbow).

I wouldn’t mind Thief got staffs IF ONLY a good majority of the staff skins can be fitting. Imagine a Thief wielding the Wintersday Staff or Final Rest, it just feels very out of place for an “acrobatic” themed melee weapon. In terms of visuals, all the currently revealed elite spec weapons can fit with their existing designs.
