Did you fail to read the ‘I don’t want to do the living story in a group’ bit?

The living story never felt like it was supposed to be group content, and I prefer to enjoy it at my own pace.

Although honestly I found the stealth section and the annoying washed out lighting far more annoying than being forced to play a character I’m not interested in with a skillset I don’t like playing.

I really like wearing the winter town clothes. It’s the first outfit I’ve ever worn as an asura that looks even remotely feminine.

And yeah, I’d like to look feminine, not like my outfit has malfunctioned in a variety of problematic ways – as with most of the female human armour this thread has produced thus far.

Best I’ve managed so far for combat gear is the culturual tier 2 with its cute tails.

Challenging can be good. But being one-shot-defeated by massive aoe that you have little or no time to dodge? That’s just frustrating.

If you watch the priests animations it is easy to avoid. If you see the red circle on the ground it is already too late. I love it.

(ugh.. do not know what’s going on with this post and why it insists on duplicating what I’ve written.. I cannot figure out how to fix it. sorry )

Okay.. but how are you supposed to know where he’s going to put those huge red circles? It’s all well and good watching for his animations, but if the ground ends up being littered with the circles, you still end up in the same situation, no?

I’d like more frequent responses on this and not having this just brushed under the rug.

They’re already said it’s not possible, so it’s not possible. This thing that is demonstrably quite possible, and indeed, something they have successfully implemented in a previous title just simply can’t be done! It only took five months of hand-waving and saying ‘eh, we’ll get to it eventually’ to work it out.

It’s absolutely maddening how much I was looking forward to this feature and how much Anet are simply going to put their fingers in their ears until the complaints stop.

I guess what’s most disappointing is the implicaiton that it’s not an issue they’re ever going to address – sure, it’s an impossibility with the current implementation, but it’s not a total impossibility. I could stand to wait for them to get around to getting EU/NA players play together eventually, but it doesn’t sound like that’s ever going to happen.

That is an absolute crushing disappointment – there is no hyperbole that one of the major points of sale for me was the guesting system and not being segregated to one region/server ala WoW – in conjunction with level scaling, the idea that I could always play with my disparate groups of friends wherever they happened to be in the game.

Did Arenanet talk about Engineers at all?

in Engineer

Posted by: Cosine.1786

Cosine.1786

It rather feels that engineer has a few parallels with the early form of WoW’s druid class.

Druids were another class built under the ‘jack of all, master of none’ traits and early in the game’s life suffered a very severe lack of focus that resulted in a low druid player population and a general perception of them being sub-par in dungeons and raids.
They were taken to raids for exactly one ability (innervate) and eventually labelled by Blizzard as a primarily healer class, as that was the role they shackled together for raids.

Druids only started to shine when given an overhaul for the first expansion, where Blizzard refined the class with the intent of allowing them to specialise, with carrying token utility abilities. It was a rocky road, but that philosophy eventually has allowed druids to become fairly viable in all combat roles in the game today: by virtue of being able to specialise properly.

I guess what I’m saying is that a lack of focus on anything other than ‘versatility’ with result in an unappealing slab of mulch (especially true when that philospohy also includes ‘and their damage should be below average to compensate’). This is one area Anet might want to learn from Blizzard on.

The number of times I’ve been running useful tasks in wvw that don’t involve murder (guerilla flipping suppy camps, running supply, buidling, repairing, reviving allies, etc) and not being rewarded in any way at all.

I think the reward systems in wvw needs to be addressed in some way, especially in regard to combat vs support.

Enemies respawn too fast in my personal opinion

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Cosine.1786

Cosine.1786

Nothing takes you out a game quite like watching the three guys you just beat up respawn while you’re in the middle of fighting their two remaining friends and rejoining the fight. Especially obnoxious in caves and extremely un-fun, leading to battles being drawn far longer than they needed to be until you can finally down all enemies before the first in the pack respawns.

95-120 seconds does not feel correct at all with the rate things can respawn, especially in caves, it’s closer to 30-60 seconds.

Orr is especially bad for this and actually stopping to fight roaming enemies who aggro you (and the mob density in Orr is so great that you will be causing aggro constantly) can get you quite badly infinity-holed by respawning enemies. It’s nearly always better to run in Orr. Compared to other zones, where I’d stop and dispatch attackers, exploration and running around in Orr was playing a stupid game of Captain Cannon-fodder between points while zombies tried to climb inside me. Not. Fun.

Please Make Engineers Competitive

in Engineer

Posted by: Cosine.1786

Cosine.1786

In a game of hybrids, imposing hybrid tax on one particular class is just silly.

When your design doc for a class includes that their damage should be sub-par, you should probably rethink that class. The engineer’s inability to perform truly competitive DPS or really anything more than ‘sidekick’ rather offsets the awesome aesthetic.

And really, you make a class that uses guns and explosives and flamethrowers and SCIENCE and then decide their damage should be a bit lame.

Even with level scaling, they’re all the more irritating the lower level you are. A pack of mobs who individually have an obnoxious amount of hit points. At least the around the level 30 mark, the dolls, ventari and golems (all ranged attackers) are simply not worth the time and effort it takes to kill. Better to grab the ground presents and peg it.

Whoever wrote the engineer paragraph seems conveniently ignorant of the fact, that, y’know, the game offers the possibility of builds. If I want to build my engineer for versatility, then that should gimp my damage. If I want to build my engineer for damage, then that should gimp my versatility.

I really want to highlight this bit as something that should be taken notice of. The current design philosophy behind engineers is awful, based on that description, and will only ever lead to them being lacklustre in every area.

Cosine.1786

I feel awful making a post like this, but I’ll try to arrange my thoughts on the subject in a manner a passing developer might find useful feedback.

What really doesn’t help is the rather poor choice of words to describe how they want to balance to classes. Let’s compare:

The Engineer is a highly versatile class. While it doesn’t have the long range capabilities of the Ranger, or the melee capabilities of the Warrior or Guardian, they are comfortable at medium ranges in most fights. They have a lot of control, and use their boons to keep themselves (and allies) alive in a fight. They can use different kits based on the situation, but this extreme versatility comes at a cost in damage on their main hand weapons.

…with Elementalists:

We see the elementalist as the king of versatility. The skill ceiling for the Ele is exceptional, as the ability to leverage all four attunements at the right time is crucial for understanding the elemetnalist. The Ele boasts some of the best team support and control abilities in the game, as well as some great area of effect damage.

‘Decent utility with low damage to ’compensate’ vs ‘King of utility with awesome healing and damage’. Sounds fair, doesn’t it?

Might be hyperbole on my part, and might be a bit of poor explaination on the writer’s part, but that design philosophy doesn’t bode well for engineers going forward in my eyes.

It rather feels like Arenanet doesn’t quite know what to do with engineers. It rather smacks of the early days of druids in WoW. Such an unfocused ‘jack of all trades’ class is very hard to get right.

If engineer ever felt like the afterthought class, if you take a gander at their GW2 wiki page and the links therein, that’s because it is was more or less exactly that. It was designed last and created as a mucky amalgation of two april fools classes from GW1.

It’s still possible to be a very effective engineer. We’ve got your tankcats and your static discharges and such, but it’s a bit nebulous when placed against most other classes.

That said, my love of engineer stems more from the aesthetic of the whole thing rather than their design and role in the game. Currently the class feels a little slipshod in execution and I really hope Arenanet take a bit more time and make them effective. I’m not asking to be OP, I’m asking to not be generally considered to be a delicious snack in WvW by other classes. (Please note: I am not a delicious snack)

in WvW

Posted by: Cosine.1786

Cosine.1786

The main issue isn’t being left alone, it’s the POI’s and Viewpoints located inside enemy strucutres that can be a pain in the backside to get your mitts on. It can be especially tricky if you don’t move spawn colour week on week.

I managed to attain the locations simply by playing W3 a lot and it took about two weeks for some of the trickier locations (enemy keeps, etc) to become available.

Another option is to transfer to a server you know has a desireable team colour for that week.

I find it a bit perplexing that WvW is a hurdle for world completionists to overcome, and dungeons and heart-of-the-mists areas are not.

Extra Punctuation – Drop the High Scores - A fun little analysis of certain forms of multiplayer. The column starts off talking about high scores, hence the title, but veers off into ‘indirect’ forms of multiplayer, namely Dragon’s Dogma and Journey. I think a lot of it applies to GW2 in terms of how you can interact with other people in the game.

I’ve frequently ‘informally grouped’ with lots of people, not actually teamed up with them but run around together fulfilling the same objectives and helping each other out. I’m pleased that GW2 allows other people to enliven my experience as and when, and to whatever degree, I choose. My paranoid brain gives it a tone of ‘eh, at some point.’

Guesting is the one of the most attractive features in the game and a main selling point for me. Along with level scaling, it allows me to play with my friends wherever they happen to be in the game. So the lack of it, and any evidence that it’s coming anytime soon, is quite irritating. :<
