Have you seen the lionguard hammer? That looks smaller than a normal sledgehammer. If you want to talk reality then at least keep them somewhat in proportion with the other weapons. There’s no way you’d choose that over the white starter greatsword if you had to choose a weapon to fight with, based in reach alone.

A sledgehammer is huge compared to what was used historically. I agree proportion to the other weapons in the world is also a factor to consider. However, I think they all need toning down in head size, width, length, etc.

Will never happen but it would be so cool to watch…

The notion of public black lists worked amazingly well back in the days of BBS’s. If you were risking being banned from FUTURE games before they even came out, you may consider not being a burden on society.

Alternatively, ANET could simply drive up the cost of making gold, by actively banning and combating Bots developing automated systems and taking direct action (actually having GMs log into the game and kick/ban them). Once it is driven up to be reasonably close in price to buy from the in game shop, the Gold Sellers all leave.

@Airala who said they would have to hunt for bots? I am sure Anet is flooded with bot reports! Perhaps they should wait to the vast majority of players quit and then run a system wide message nicely asking the botters to shut down. Pretty soon the damage done by bots will not be able to be reversed and then it will be too late!

I think you and I must be having two very different conversations with two entirely different people… that’s the only conclusion I can draw from the seemingly random and unrelated comments you keep directing my way.

Actually it looks to me like you are failing to read any replies to you and actually understand them.

No one implied that direct in game ban hammers was the only solution, nor the long-term solution. It is merely a way to mitigate damage while working on the longer term solutions (automatic stuff).

Also, calling someone out on the forum for their personal information is not only against forum etiquette but also poor form.

Typically farmers don’t pay for the game, and use scammed credit cards or spoofed timecard-codes for subscriptions. So it doesn’t particularly deter the crooks, just your legit customers.

At this point, there’s no possible way ANet could require a subscription, no matter what. it was such a central selling point to GW1 and marketing GW2.

Also just simply stolen accounts; knowledge from spyware/keylogers and other account/password storage systems such as other games and forums.

You have never done Software Development, have you

Development has to be done before release.
Don’t need to be a software developer to know that.

No, but you do need to be aware that very often projects must be released to the public before they are completed due to financial reasons, lack of resources, or due to poor management. You should also be aware that some issues do not show up until released to a wider audience (most issues being pounded on in this product were known in beta, however).

Just be sure you are directing your annoyances at the real cause (which you likely are not aware of).

In one day a single person could:
log into every server for 30 minutes
ask every map chat if they see any bots
verify they are bots visually (it is obvious)
drop the hammer on every one.

If this happened each day, the results would be impressive.

A single employee. Everything else, is just an excuse.

A very simplistic view and wrong. I could give arguments but I am thinking you wouldn’t be open to them anyways.

So I will keep it simple: It’s not that simple. Everything else is just fantasy land.

It is that simple. I personally, have performed this task in the past. If a direct interface does not exist in game to perform the kick and password reset on the account, then it could be handled via a hand-off or by using the external tools or database (I had to write SQL to perform account reset or IP ban after kick).

There is no advanced fancy magic to this. You observe/test a bot and once proven you nail them. Long term detection algorithms can be developed alongside the ban hammer operations.

Stop making it sound more complicated than it is.

Lacking in Classes Function....

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Craven.5468

Craven.5468

What, to me, makes a class’ personality in this game? Weapon skills. Most of them (except warrior, guardian and thief -though it’s arguable-) seem to be.. flavorless? I mean, engineer rifle VS warrior rifle, as an example, or ranger longbow, or thief P/P,

You don’t see a difference in ranger shortbow vs thief shortbow?

Ranger shortbow is about rapid, single target attacks, evasion and control.

Thief shortbow is about rapid movement and AoE conditions.

Engineer rifle is about control—knockbacks, escapes, immobilizing.

Warrior rifle is all about dumping down tons of single target DPS.

How about a mesmer and a necro using a staff?

Necro staff has lots of area control, situational placing of marks.

Mesmer staff is buffs and conditions, clones, and teleportation.

I just think you’re being disingenuous when you claim that weapons all feel the same on each different profession.

I agree completely with this. The “feel” of the same weapon on different classes is indeed very different. Sure, there may be some that are close, but effort was made to make them unique to each class, and it shows.

The integration of water combat into the game is nearly seamless. I love the implementation. Love it.

This is sarcastic, right?

I hate that half my skills are inexplicably unusable underwater… And that I go from having a modest choice of weapons to a total of TWO. (Neither of which, as a condinionmancer, are very good)

I have enjoyed underwater combat on multiple classes thus far. I find it very fluid, and a very enjoyable experience. In time, I will have experienced them all.

I actually like that my weapons are different underwater.

Kiting vs. well uh... Not Kiting

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Craven.5468

Craven.5468

Traditional archers, when fielded could win battles when properly protected by infantry (talking medieval times here). However, once an opposing enemy got into melee range they were wiped out nearly instantly.

Sadly this doesn’t translate as well into a game because too many mage/archer style players complain when they are one-shotted (like reality). It is a simple problem that range attackers in that genre required large groups to defend them for their effectiveness to pay off.

As range and accuracy increased (guns), suddenly melee was pointless, as it died before it could reach the range weapon users, as did metal armor.

So the balance of ranged damage output vs. survivability is a pain to make everyone happy as there are many ways to approach it.

No damage = No loot in medium / large events

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Craven.5468

Craven.5468

So, you should not have to do anything at all to receive rewards and loot? Just run up and be there and win? What’s the solution? Why even bother with gearing up if this is the case? No offense, but 75% of the people complaining are running around in +MF gear to begin with because they want more loot. They can’t dps with MF, of course, so the game should be easier, right?

The first day I went to zerg in Straits, I didn’t get any credit for the first 5 events. So I upgraded my gear to rares. It was cheap, and then I adjusted my style for the large group, and never looked back, all Gold since. It’s just not that hard. If it is, you’re not doing something right, and there’s nothing Anet can do except basically just fill your bank with gold and give you karma and armor.

Rezzing a player in a long DE is the single BIGGEST contribution you can make to group damage output. You get zero reward for this.

This isn’t about standing around and doing nothing.

When playing my guardian, if I focus entirely on keeping up buffs and rolling healing while trying to keep mobs hitting me (Mace + Focus) I struggle to get gold and will get jack for loot. I simply don’t tag enough and don’t do enough damage.

If I swap to two-handed sword, I can guarantee myself gold and plenty of drops due to damage and tagging.

This is frustrating to say the least.

Mounts assist in travel. This game was designed around using WPs for large distance or faster travel. The economy would be impacted if mounts were released (because fewer people would use WPs).

On top of that, mounts take up development time, modeler time and artist time. I would much rather they spent that time expanding the end game horizontally (more lvl 80 zones and activities).

Priorities.

I just want to throw my hat into the ring and state that I despise most “end game” armor styles and weapon styles in many of the more popular MMOs such as WoW, Rift, etc.

Gigantic glowing balls on shoulders that are so large if I shake my head no I may kill myself on spikes? How about shoulders that are set at angles that would actually deflect swords INTO my neck?! Swords that are 11 feet long and wider than the average shield?

I love my fantasy, like cool particle affects and love to see some crazy exotic material over-gothic plate. But kitten I have some limits before I shake my head in disgust.

I openly admit, I have already burned 10 Transmutes to make awesome stat armor look like the model on low level gear because it simply looks more to my liking!

I miss my Gear Grind

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Craven.5468

Craven.5468

As much flaming as this OP is getting, I kinda see his point. There is a large (LARGE) step between getting full exotics and getting a legendary item. You can farm/grind for gear and be done in about a week. Or you can farm/grind for legendary in be done in 3 months. There’s no middle ground.

Although I do also understand everybody else that has a problem with the OP. This game is a lot more about skill than getting lucky or who can grind for 10-12 hours a day. I think GW2 has a lot more people, like me, who can only play 1 to 2 hours a day. We don’t feel like we are at a disadvantage because our skill and awareness is a lot more important than how long we can grind a dungeon.

Thanks. The problem I see is that people equate sympathizing with me to instantly transforming this game into World of Warcraft. Sorry guys, but admitting you’d like ways to get better stats (or more vanity gear options) doesn’t mean you want the blizzard whip on your back.

Now that you’ve made it clear you hate good gear (weirdos), let’s focus on vanity stuff. Why is there such a huge leap between stuff that looks good and stuff that looks plain? Why is it that an 80 blue staff looks about as good as an 80 exotic crafted and as good as an 80 exotic for 50G on the trading post? Why does the legendary precursor look plain as well? You took away the stat grind for gear but replaced it with almost nothing. What am I supposed to do in between now and legendary? Oh, that’s right, GRIND with no reward.

This is where these arguments are unraveling.

Actually they keep unraveling because of your delivery. If you avoid taking stabs and making cynical comments people may take your point of view into consideration. I agree, the gap in gear tiers (if we can so boldly call them that) is too wide and needs more expansion.

Yep.

I find it a very odd notion that one would state that ever increasing gear stats makes an environment highlight a differentiation in “skill”. I would even argue that video gaming requires little “skill” at all, but if I leave that topic alone I still can’t understand how anyone would claim that grinding anything would somehow grant someone more “skill”.

A level playing field reveals skill; not a lack of a job, family and proper hygiene.

I consider enhanced travel of any form realistic not resistance. Same is true for armor damage repair costs.

These things make me care about dying, care about travel and help to immerse me into the world and have a stake in my progress. Much like in EVE, there are consequences to losing a fight in a ship worth 2 billion. In GW2, at least there is a repair cost involved.

The fact that you view these costs as insurmountable and unacceptable is a matter of opinion and perspective; both you are welcome to have and neither are facts.

Logical arguments.

I don’t believe I’ve stated that the costs are unacceptable, rather I argued that their existence doesn’t fit the intended goal.

It’s one thing to say they exist in game as a way provoke immersion (which I do agree with), than to say that they exist to keep the economy in check (which I don’t agree with).

I’d like to say that if we do keep waypoint and armor costs in the game, it’s not at the expense of the players ability to actually play. I’ve personally felt the pain of that when I’ve had to completely walk away from a dungeon (with a handful of pugs) simply because I couldn’t afford to do it anymore (we’ve wiped like 20 times, but the enthusiasm to complete it remained, so I stayed for as long as I could).

There was a fantastic discussion a while back about some tweaks that could be made to the travel system that would make grouping with lower level friends a lot better, among other things. I cannot find the thread but I think it was moved to suggestions. It has a heck of a great discussion though.

I think if a few tweaks were put in place, fast travel could be regulated and prohibitive enough to avoid zone floods and other issues without making it as illogical as it is now. Many suggested tying the costs to the zone level (not the player level), as well as making your jump to a major city cheaper or free, and more. Still searching for it…

Because what you call “problem” is not a fact based on unbiased research, but just your own opinion about something instead. You are so self-centered on your coments that you fail to understand this simple fact.

Show me one post where I spoke for anyone but myself and didn’t express simple observation.

The beauty behind “simple facts” is that they are indeed, simple and proven. It is proven that when you apply any resistance between Point A and Point B, the result is less than optimal.

Consider the player “Point A” and consider gameplay “Point B”; waypoint and armor costs are the resistance. Pretty simple wouldn’t you agree?

I consider enhanced travel of any form realistic not resistance. Same is true for armor damage repair costs.

The only argument rebutting the “proposed” issues are “if you don’t like it, don’t do it” and “this isn’t wow, if you wanted wow, go buy pandaland”.

And I bought pandaland, despite not having planned to do so before hand. I can already predict the response from some of these people though, it’s “good riddance!” or “don’t let the door hit you on the way out” etc. I’m not sure why mmo communities have devolved to actually wanting other people to quit and play something else, even though the whole point is to have more people and play with people. The more people “your game” has, the more money the developer gets, the more content and overall game will be better. Keep shooing people out though, I’m sure it’ll end well.

I think everyone should buy every game and try them all; and even gasp enjoy them all! I see no reason to expect that everyone who plays one particular game should stay forever. There are many digital worlds to explore; no reason to limit anyone to one.

Enjoy.
